so freaking hard.
He assigns a lot of work! If you like math and want to learn this stuff really well take him; he'll give you lot's of practice. He assigns much more work than other 108 teachers. He's a nice guy and he really enjoys the subject.
Brother Pieper is a wonderful teacher!!!! He is very helpful and makes math really interesting.
The classes were hard, but I learned a lot. The take-home tests suck.
He is very easy to approach and is enthusiastic about math but I have never met someone so "artciulate" and yet not make a darn bit of sense. Still, never before have I seen a teacher so willing to help a struggling student.
OK, at first I was intimidated because he really made you work. But, as the class progressed I realized that the work actually helped me understand the concepts better. He is amazing in his willingness to help--that is help you help yourself, not give you the easy answer. I worked harder & learned more than in most classes--highly recommended!
This class is not recommented to anyone who wants to actually learn.
I do not think he should be able to teach.
I have never failed a college math class before. His style of teaching wasn't what i needed. He is very helpful but hard to understand why he does certain things. I wouldn't take another one of his classes for that reason.
The first five weeks, most of the class was lost. He leaves you hanging on things you don't know. I love math, but he made this class so much more difficult than it needed to be. Plus he doesn't give you enough practice with things that he only teaches once and then he expects you to know it on the tests. Nice guy but bad at teaching clearly. :(
This class was very hard for me. It was hard to keep up and his teaching was hard to understand. If you can take this class from a different teacher I would. He's a nice guy and very helpful. His way of teaching is just ahrd to understand
This teacher is Extremely hard to understand. He has a poor teaching method. I am not the greatest at math but I can get it if I work at it, however for this class no matter how many hours I spent studying for it, it never paid off. He doesn't use a textbook, only the internet. If you like math don't take it because you will end up hating it.
unclear, and always changing. project that was worth 20% of our grade changed to be worth almost nothing the day it was due. test items are only discussed once in class with almost no practice. way too much homework with no guidance. one assigment said "use your intuition to figure the answers". little instruction. nice guy but bad teaching methods
Very nice guy but not a good teacher, the lack of a textbook for starters makes it almost impossible to study. He barely hit on topics and then left the class hanging. The class was clearly confused and he just kept on going on. I strongly recomend a getting a different teacher.
nice guy but wow didn't learn a thing. lol i have to retake the class because i got a D in his class. that's the lowest grade i have ever received in my life. nice guy but didn't teach. no textbook. i sat on my comp everyday and started a blog because he never made sense. i would of failed if it wasn't for the TA. im sorry if you have to take him.
He has a strong passion for teaching and for instilling a passion in students who are looking to be a teacher. His tests can be a little difficult. He doesnt teach how to do homework assignments, you have to be able to figure out from reading the book how to do the homework.
Pieper is incredibly difficult, and a very frustrating teacher. Very long assignments. Ridiculous tests. Nice guy, but a terrible teacher, his methods are so strange. He is impossible to contact for help. I would not recommend him to anyone.
he's really hard! Gives a lot of homework
He is simply the worst teacher ever. There is no clarity on assignments. He expects us to learn it on our own using our own resources. He fails to realize that he is the TEACHER. He is super nice and he knows his math, but he is not good at teaching. his assignments are impossible and his tests are harder. I would never recomend him.
He was very effective with having students answer eachother's questions. But most of the material assigned was not covered until the day assignments were due. Most of the focus was on teaching the material. 2 assignments due every class period
he is a way nice guy. He has every desire to help you learn and to do well in his class, but he can't teach. He doesn't do the work behind the answer so you are confused, and he goes a million miles an hour, he expects you to just to get it. I wouldn't recomend him if you won't contribute all your spare time to his class.
I didn't really care for him. He doesn't explain things well. He doesn't teach the homework, just goes over your questions. I think I hated the class more than the teacher. But I probably wouldn't take another class from him.
Oh my heck. I dont even know that is going on in that class anymore. He straight up told us on the first day, I'm not going to teach you math, I'm going to teach you how to guess. Its an algebra class, and we dont use graphing calculators, everything is in excel. Plus, his eyebrows are super distracting.!!
He's very animated and tries to joke around, but he's not a good teacher at all. He gives way to much work and often times doesn't clearly explain how to do it. I would definitely not take any of his classes ever again and I wouldn't have taken him this year had I known. he's a good guy and very passionate about math, but he's terrible teacher.
This teacher is horrible never take him
I think he is hard but I learned a lot in his class. He does not just give you the answers, you have to find them yourself. Then, if you don't get it he will help you understand it during the next class period. I did get frustrated in his class, but I think the effort I put into it was worth it. It helped me to understand how to teach math.
At first i thought his class was hard, but it really isnt. as long as you do two hours of homework for every hour in class, you will do great. he has two assignments for each class period: daily prep and prove and ponder. great teacher, will answer any question that you have, has a good sense of humor.
Great guy, but I didn't like the class at all. The class had very little structure, and there was no textbook used. Not my type of math class.
Bro. Pieper is a horrible teacher. He doesn't know that he teaches and uses half of class time to figure it out. He then goes over a simple example and gives you a hard problem for homework every night. I have no idea how someone let this guy get into teaching!!
Bro Pieper is the nicest guy I've ever met, however he CANNOT teach. I come to his class almost everyday, but there is no clarity in what he teaches. He doesn't use a textbook, we use the internet and our own resources. His test are near impossible for any student unless you already come in this class with a firm knowledge of math. NOT recommended.
He's very willing to help. However, he doesnt know how to teach or what he is teaching so going to him for help is useless. I asked for his help once and he spent 45 minutes struggling to solve the problem he asked us to do for homework. His homework took me about 4 hours to do 5 problems because we had to do them in excel instead of writing them.
Nice enough guy, a horrible teacher. The structure is horrible. He never prepares you for the homework, and there is no textbook and no examples, so your on your own. He only teaches you after you've done the homework and he does so with an expectation that you should know it. Every aspect of the class is over complicated.
Brother Pieper is a wonderful teacher. I really enjoyed the class and I learned a lot. Brother Pieper is a really helpful teacher and he really wants you to do well in the class.
He was a fair teacher, but he gave us about 3 assignments for every class day. The work load was very stressful. It was too time consuming, and it made it hard for me to be able to complete my studying for other classes.
If your thinking about taking his math class, don't. If your taking his class, drop it. If you can't, best of luck. He has a lot of homework that doesn't improve learning. His class is very confusing. Bro. Pieper is nice; however, is by far the worst teacher I've had throughout my scholastic career.
His teaching methods and homework have nothing to do with math.
I knew Algebra from high school. Even though i knew most of the material Bro. Pieper was pretty much useless when it came to teaching. he gave large amounts of homework each class most of them were useless too. if you are planning to take math don't take it from Bro Pieper. he is by far the worst math teacher i've ever had
He is the worst math teacher ever and ive had some bad math teachers. He is slow with his grading but requires us to do all this work within one day. I would suggest you take it from another teacher
worst teacher at byui, he requires to much homework then doesn't give it back or grade it until 2 months later. He and the math department should rethink his teaching at this university!
Don't take this professor. Ever. He makes no sense. He requires so much homework but it's unclear whether you need to turn it in. You'll do a lot of work and then not get credit for it. Everything is pointless. Has nothing to do with math like you'd think it would. If you're in his class already, switch.
DO NOT TAKE THIS TEACHER! He never grades work on time and when I received my final grade he just put in zeros for the papers he did not grade. This is the worst teacher ever. You will regret everyday if you take this class!
Very difficult teaching style. Lots of homework (Test, Take home test, Textbook assignment, Ponder and Prove assignment and Prepare assignment due every time you have to take a test) and is very slow at returning assignments. Usually just points you to the Math Lab if your Struggling.
Yes, he is overall a nice guy...he just isn't that great of a teacher, which is ironic considering the class I took from him; learning how to teach children. As college students we couldn't understand what he was teaching so how would a CHILD know what the heck was going on!? Pretty much learned how NOT to teach my future class...
This class was SUPER hard, but I think it's the class that's hard, not just the professor. I felt like Brother Pieper was a great teacher. He explained things differently, and I was often confused at first, but Bro Pieper always made himself available to answer questions and he was very helpful.
If you're willing to put the work into this class, it's super fun and fairly easy! If you don't get some of the work you can always visit his office or talk after class. His tests are hard, they're short answer and be prepared to study for them! Overall Pieper is a great teacher, he lets you use your brain instead of telling you the answer!
He abuses the learning model. He told us all that learning math is all about "discovery" i.e. All his homework assignments were things we never covered in class. I had to learn everything outside of class online and at the math lab. the setup for this class is horrible. There isn't a text book so its hard to study on your own. Good luck!
Brother Pieper is a great teacher and he really wants the students to learn more than anything else. He'll spend a class going over just one problem, as long as everyone understands. He is fair with homework assignments and the tests reflect the work that we do in class. If you come to class prepared and wanting to learn, you'll do great!
Great teacher BUT horrible teaching method! Worked literally avg 15 hrs/week outside of class for his assign, only got a B. DO NOT take him. He taught lessons, not students unfortunately. Tutor no show after setting appt.
A lot of work is required in his class.
Bro. Pieper really knows his stuff. He cares about us understanding the subject, not just giving us grades. He was always available whenever anybody needed help.
Bro. Pieper really understand this material and he cares about helping his students. He is always in his office, earlier than the other professors and leaves later than most. He has a great testimony about the power of HARD WORK!
Bro. Pieper has a thing called "Test Repentance" policy that gives his students a chance to raise grades on their tests. I got a bad grade on a test once but I studied really hard for the next one. Since my grade was better on the 2nd one, he actually added even more points to the first test! That is how you "repent" and study HARDER! He is amazing
THe course design is terrible. The math you learn is not hard, it's just the way they make you learn it is ridiculas. They give you a little bit of information then they say figure it out or look it up on google. No textbook to refer to. Pieper is super helpful and cares, but he always responds with a question to make you think which is frustrating
The course design is terrible. They give you a little bit of information then they say figure it out or look it up on google. No textbook to refer to. Pieper is not helpful and doesn't care. He will put you down if you disagree and always responds with a question to make you think which is frustrating. He is horrible, horrible, horrible!
Nice guy, but very unclear and difficult to understand. Does not really teach (just expects you to use your online resources and teach it to yourself) If you take the class be prepared for lots of homework!
horrible teacher. doesn't understand the concept of teaching and expects you too look it up on google.
Friendly and helpful 1 on 1 but absolutely impossible to follow in class. He assigns homework which has a huge impact on your grade on things he has not taught. He expects you to learn how to do the homework after class, class is mostly a review of the previous day. Take math 110 from someone else unless you want to do a lot of google searches.
I met with Pieper the first week of class and told him I was no good at math. He said this was the course for me and we would apply real world application. This class is a joke. I worked my butt off and missed class once. He doesn't teach what we are covering in our Home work. There are 3 assignments and a quiz every class period.
His class is set up strange and is really frustrating. I didn't enjoy it at all. He's a nice person, really friendly, but this class is not very good. No one I have talked to actually learned anything from it.
There is no textbook and the tutoring by TA's don't help since they don't understand the concepts. He has a very dry teaching method and when you ask a question, he makes other students answer it. I went to take my final but he made me change my clothes and the final is in class, so I missed the first window of taking it. Don't take this teacher.
horrible teacher, he doesnt understand the material, what he teaches isnt even algebra. work is difficult, he doesnt teach... bland and hard to pay attention to, this is the first mathematics class i have been unable to obtain an A in and i have taken Calculus and Trig. look for a different professor this guy isnt worth taking
Terrible Professor, he doesn't know how to teach don't take him. Don't believe me? Second test of this semester the class average was a 32%, next day he didn't show up to class and when he did come back his response was, "hmm i don't know what happened class". I went in to talk to him during his office hours about it and he never even showed up...
This was by far the worst class (Math 110) and the worst professor I have ever had. I didnt learn anything in his class, I had to do it all on the internet because he would get side-tracked every single class. When you get your tests back from him, double check them because every test I got back was graded incorrectly.
Subjects given in homework were not talked about until the next class period. He was unclear in most of his explanations in much of the course. If it is mandatory for you to take this class, try to take someone else, or make sure to sign up for a weekly tutor.
one word. HORRIBLE. ridiculous amount of homework and the homework had nothing to do with what we went over in class, this guy needs to be fired. take him at your own peril
He was an awful teacher. Completely just does not care about your well being at all. Throughout the semester there were probably 3 times I emailed him with questions and I never ever received a response. He gives out too much work to grade so 3 of our huge project grades were turned into completion grades because grades were due and he was behind.
He does not teach and he expects you to learn the materiel without explaining how to do it. I was up countless nights with a study group I got a 30% on his test. To my surprise, the next day I learned that his class average was 35%. Biocheminstry and Engineering exams have a higher class average than that and the materiel is much more challenging.
This class is set up so everything is to be done online, there was a quiz every day and hours of homework every night, not only that, it was just all around difficult. He didn't teach well and everything he said was confusing. Do not take from him! I'm usually a really good at math and school in general and I did terrible in this class.
Bro. Pieper is a nice guy but really does not know how to teach. The class is set up so you have to teach yourself before you come to class then he will kind of answer questions during the next class. He will go over a certain problem but not teach you how to work a problem like it. Tests are insane and are all taken online which causes a problem.
Brother Pieper may be the type of teacher that some people need but I definitely wasn't that person. The class was just a lot harder than it needed to be and I really hated it.
he is the best teacher i have ever had. everyone should take a class form him.
he is awesome!
Brother Pieper is not a good teacher. He gives you big homework assignment for everyday. the assignments are never actually graded you just get a 100 for completion, which is nice, but you don't get any feedback on your homework. If you can take another class, do it! If this is the only teacher offered, then study hard-tests are VERY difficult.
I really did not like this class the teacher was not helpful at all. You have to do ALOT of homework and you never go over the homework. The test are hard you have to think how he thinks. Also I did not take away anything from this class I was always confused and when I asked for help he just asked another question. DONT TAKE FROM HIM
Actually a pretty good teacher. He teaches the reason behind the formulas, sometimes doesn't give the formula enough attention. But overall kinda funny and he genuinely cares. Not too much of a workload but not the world's easiest class, but seriously it's a math class!
DO NOT TAKE HIM. He's a nice guy but so far the worst teacher I have had at BYUI. He makes it way more complicated than it needed to be. You learn all the material by yourself. I would ask him questions and he wouldn't answer them, he had students answer my questions. Take math from someone else.
Brother Pieper is a great teacher! I think that many students may be frustrated with the way he runs his courses because he allows us time to prepare ourselves for class - he does not spoon feed us - he guides us in our learning. He encourages learning for the sake of learning and not for the grade, which I love. He is so very kind and happy!
If you want to learn - take Brother Pieper. If you want to fluff your grade - take someone else. His tests match the course material, if you spend time working on understanding the course material. It is a difficult class, but it is manageable if you truly want to learn how to understand math so you can teach it to students.
I'm going to be completely honest and say that this class was not easy. It take a lot of personal effort with Brother Pieper's teaching style. But he is a wonderful guy who wants you to pass his class. If you're struggling go in and talk to him about it because he is definitely willing to put the time in for you.
He doesn't explain how to do anything. His teaching policy is that he wants you to struggle through the assignments to learn it instead of having himself do his job and teach you. One day he literally said to Google a math concept and to learn it for ourselves. Also there's no textbook and there's assignments due every class period. Worst teacher.
I love Bro Pieper. the hour does drag on a bit, and im not a fan of "do your hw on new material the night before &then come to class with questions" set-up but most math classes do it that way. the class is fairly simple when it comes to the actual math stuff, but requires you to think out of the box. the projects are the confusing part.
Enthusiastic about what he teaches. However, don't take if you want to take more than 12 credits. He requires "exploration" to learn a subject, and proficient googling skills (no textbook). He isn't very clear when explaining a principle, or simply does not explain it. Familiar with "Preach my Gospel"? Doesn't understand chapter 10, at all. Not Rec
Some people think that it's hard to follow Brother Pieper's lectures, but he's more than willing to clarify during office hours and answer any questions you have. I personally extremely enjoyed his lectures and he helped me get just as excited as he is about the topic. I also liked how he brought the gospel into math.
If you pay attention and participate in class, you will do well in this class. He is always open to give you one-on-one help.
TONS OF HOMEWORK! I have to live in the tutoring center!
His class was pretty though, but it was honestly really good for anyone who is actually trying to learn the material in a way that you will remember. There is a lot of homework, but most of it has a good purpose.
I had a hard time grasping the basics of concepts. The tests were quite difficult. Homework was quite difficult. There is no guidance with new material, everyone is expected to be proficient in geometry for Math 206. With no guidance, I had a difficult time grasping this class. The lectures were very oral. I wouldn't recommend this professor.
Lots and lots of homework. You really have to work hard in order to be successful. Brother Pieper is a very friendly professor who truly cares about his students. He's always willing to answer questions or go over assignments in his office if you need extra help. Projects are a big part of your grade.
When I first took Brother Pieper's class, I really didn't like him, but then I took another class and got to know him better. He truly cares about his students and how much they learn. His teaching style is incredible- a talent honed over years of practice. He does not just give you the answers- he makes you figure them out yourself so you LEARN!
He's very enthusiastic and passionate about math. However, he believes in an exploratory method of learning and believes Google is the best teacher. If you ever have questions, he either responds with a different question or has another student explain it to you. If you're good at math, take him. If you struggle, find someone else.
This class was awful! He is a nice guy but doesn't teach clearly. He expects you to already know the material. His class is set up so that you teach yourself. You don't have a textbook; you write your own textbook and sections are due before each exam.
He is very concentrated on making sure you know the material backwards, forwards, and sideways. Assignments are very long and he puts material on the tests that wasn't taught in class so that you can teach yourself how to do it. If you're comfortable with geometry, take his class and you'll be doing a lot of busy work. If not, take someone else.
The class is harder than it needs to be. You have to figure out everything on your own and he doesn't really teach you any of the material, at least not well. You have to scan your homework assignments and put them on I-Learn. He makes you figure out what he's teaching before he teaches the material. He does have real-life examples that are cool.
I've never liked Math, and never had a professor care to help me really understand it. I loved this Math class! It took me awhile to get used to his teaching style, but I really respect it now and hope to integrate some aspects into my future classroom. All math classes in the future will be taken by him!
Do not take him! He is not nice and you will regret taking him! Tests are hard and he is rude!
He goes to much in depth in his teachings. He wants you to know the material backwards, forwards,& upside down, so he teaches you the hard way of doing everything& you to know that way for tests. He also taught more than other teachers for this course. I learned a whole new unit that my other two roommates with other teachers never covered at all.
I really enjoyed this class. It is very challenging but if you stay on top of the homework and go to class, you will get it. Brother Pieper is a tough grader and likes you to explain your working THOROUGHLY. However, he truly cares about his students and wants to help you succeed. I learned a lot and had a great experience.
He is amazing! I honestly have no idea why Brother Pieper has a low score. He is a phenomenal teacher. He is willing to answer your questions and goes into detail while he is teaching so that you understand what is going on and why. He gives a perfect amount of homework that helps teach the material. Totally take him and ask any questions necessary
He's a great guy and a good man. However, he doesn't really teach the curriculum, goes WAY too deep into concepts, grades incredibly heavy, and his iLearn is an absolute mess. So disorganized. Answer keys lack accuracy. It's work that is more like a 4 or 5 credit class. If you take him instead of online, you're taking your chances. Good luck!
This teacher knows all about the subject hes teaching. If you dont understand a problem he can show you multiple different ways to help. This teacher cares about you learning. One thing that he did that was extremely helpful is that he would tell you how to get the answer and then why it works when you learned a new subject.
I LOVED brother Pieper. To this day his class was one of my favorites. His teaching style is a bit different, though. Very keen on having the students teach each other. It worked for me and so I got a good grade in his class, but people complained about him not giving "clear answers" to questions. He just makes you think! Fair grader, nothing crazy
Brother Pieper is awesome! He is kind and very good at explaining concepts. Daily homework assignments never take more than an hour or two to complete, and usually prep you for the tests. Super low stress class.
Brother Pieper is one of the best teachers I have ever had. I have taken 4 classes from him, some harder than others. However, through every class, I felt he gave us a reasonable workload and had high expectations for our learning. There was one class that was WORK, but I would never take it from another teacher. I have learned so much from him.
There is no textbook, so at times I felt as though it was hard to get better examples than the ones he provided in class. He expects way more than necessary for this class and at times it felt like what he was teaching had absolutely no correlation to the unit we were in.
Brother Pieper was a great teacher and I really enjoyed his classes. I don't know why people complain on here about him making you understand the material completely because you are there to understand math. If you go in to talk to him he is fair and willing to take the time to help you. Put forth the effort and you will be rewarded.
Brother Pieper is truly a great teacher. I am very confused why his rating is not higher. He is passionate and very willing to help you in anyway. He always treated me very fairly and he was very accessible outside of class if I needed help. Don't listen to many of these other students who get upset because they are expected to work.
This professor truly helped me understand math not just equations. I honestly hate math. He helped me understand why my previous knowledge was lacking and was very helpful. If you truly want to understand and master math for its real-world applications take him. Don't expect to get this depth of understanding if you don't want to work for it.
I learned nothing, he was boring, and very general in his instruction. When asked a question he would often ask another student to explain and then never clarify if they were right. Not a terrible person, very nice, I was just constantly annoyed.
A very nice teacher and very personable. I was not a fan of his teaching style. We never seemed to receive a clear answer when we had a question which left me feeling confused. Surprise quizzes. Assignments were uninteresting and I don't feel that this prepares me to be a teacher.
Professor is very nice and kind, but seems like he doesn't know what he is doing. Most of the time, the quizzes and exams are not accurately scored. He will change the correct answers that will worsen or better your grade. He never gives us the correct answers on our homework, so we never know if it is correct or not.
I'm surprised his ratings aren't better. I really enjoyed Brother Pieper! Sometimes he takes a long time to explain concepts, but he always starts off class by asking if anyone has questions. He'll explain anything you didn't understand and prepares you well for each test. He occasionally drops a good joke and it's really funny when he does. Solid!
I think Brother Pieper was caring teacher with a very important strength to be able to understand difficult questions and help to make them simple. Definitely recommend to take his class!
Bro. Pieper isn't a great professor. Don't get me wrong, he's a nice guy who genuinely cares about people, but he relies way too heavily on students learning on their own. His lectures are unsubstantial, and even worse, there is no textbook. Get ready to use Khan Academy and YouTube for literally (and I mean quite LITERALLY) 70% of your learning.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! He is very monotone and will put you to sleep with his lectures. Be prepared to teach yourself. He has you complete the homework and then gives the lesson on how to do the homework the following day. I am really good at math and have never gotten a B in my entire academic career... until I took this class.
Terrible teacher. He does not teach anything. He gets mad at students if they do not know how to do the homework but yet he waits until after the homework is due to explain how to do it. Also not a nice person. He's very rude and does not know how to teach. I have received straight A's most of my classes until this one. Didn't learn a thing.
Bro. Pieper is a nice guy, who cares about his students understanding the math. I would definitely recommend getting a group in this class and work on the homework together in the math lab. His style of teaching is more: "Here's the basics, now go teach yourself." It's not my favorite, but it does help with problem solving skills. 6/10
Brother Pieper is not a bad guy, but he is a terrible teacher. He has us teach ourselves outside of class by giving homework over things we haven't learned. I went to office hours multiple times in weeks leading up to tests and still got C's on all of them because the questions on tests are way harder than the ones we went over in class. Beware.
Brother Pieper was a great teacher for College Algebra, I would recommend him! He makes sure that you really understand the material before you move on. There is a lot of material to cover and he balances it very well. If you do the work you will pass. Tutoring sessions also come in handy and they are available several times weekly.
I liked him. He is funny and lectures are entertaining. Literally you just need to pay attention in class, you can totally BS the homework and he still gave me an A on it. Of course, try your best, but it was not a stressful class for me at all. Just pay attention and ask questions and you are golden.
