great teacher for narrative class- sparks amazing conversations- take his class!
A windbag. Blows only small minds. He does not even read any of our work.
Rambling 101...
goes off topic and rambles on about nonsence for 85 minutes. doesn't read material and makes up for it by staying away from it in lecture.
Amazing teacher! Very interesting and imaginative. Take this class!!!
Interesting man
loves to talk, nice man
incredible professor...absolutely inspiring
Rambling? Ever so much..
this is the best class on campus i am in love with this man....he rocks! and a big hotty for our campus...love that cowboy hat!
Faulkner is a great author, and Pindell tells great stories even if he doesn't lecture very in depth about the books--which is a good way to teach faulkner. The tests are pretty easy.
I hate english but I absolutely loved this class and Pindell. It has been my favorite class so far. I recommend that everyone take it. I actually stayed awake in every lecture and was motivated to even read all the books before writing the essays. amazing
Dazzle them with your brilliance or baffle them with your bull****
Great class..great books!
Richard Pindell is the greatest professor Binghamton has ever seen. He is an honest worker, a solid lecturer and a historical genious. He truly puts the subjects in your face and examines the issues carefully, always managing to tweak a sensitiwe nerve.
Pindell is the man, the closest thing binghamton has to a celebrity....in the words of james lipton BRILLIANT!
Pindell and his TAs were very unhelpful to me when I needed help on my papers. They were not open in helping me formulate my papers or giving me tips to improve on my paper writing. Pindell's lectures are long and boring. This class is not recommended.
GOTTA LUV A TEACHER WHO TALKS ABOUT TATER HOLES...
Great books and he's a great speaker. Very compelling and interesting. Made the class and books enjoyable. One of my favorite classes and professors.
this guy is ridiculous..he thinks that by saying outrageous things he will win over his audience. sadly, does, but that doesn't mean anything other than that all you have to do is wear leather and curse during irrelevant lectures to impress freshmen
Pindel is SO FUNNY, take his class just b/c hes a dyanmic speaker
Funny guy....by far the only class where it is hard to try to fall asleep. Not that you want to fall asleep. He's a riot.
at first I was excited to have Pindell, lecture was packed and he seemed so cool. after awhile I realized he is really into giving silly, terse "powerful" quotes. Books were interesting, but he himself didn't really make me think.
Pindell is very powerful. Definitely worth taking his classes.
Sadly, for someone that is such a character, Pindell gets boring real fast. The occasional intellegent message is overpowered by a lot of rambling nonsense and BS. So crazy he got on my nerves (and he needs to stop touching himself!)
extremely funny, loves to teach, loves his students
I'm enjoying his class.
Pindell is the man. All you people who said he wasn't a good prof. are obviously not educated enough to take his class. In his class not only do i learn, but i feel enlightened after leaving class.
I absolutely LOVED his class! He is an awesome professor who can captivate his students. He has such a magical way of teaching, interweaving personal stories which brings the literature to light. I would take every course he teaches. Check him out!!
Pindell was so funny. He could make things interesting. Some of his TAs are just like him. He's awesome
I LOVED Mr. Pindell... he we the greatest teacher and made the lectures so much fun. The things he said were insane but thats why I loved him. If anyone said anything bad about him they are completely crazy, I am taking as many classes of his as I can.
If you peel through all the BS, you'll realize that there's a reason Pindell acts the way he does. Not everyone gets it, so not everyone will like him. Not a boring teacher by any stretch of the imagination, and most of the books are child's play.
he certainly is pretentious. he likes to make attempts at being inspirational but they generally fall short. he wears the same leather shirt and hat every day. the reading selection is good, though.
best teacher ever. I loved to go to class just to find out what he was going to say next and what he got from the readings. Great reading assignments and just overall a great class. Everyone should take a class with him.
Interesting, insightful, philosophical, quotable. I learned a lot-- this was the most absorbing class I took for my MA. Recommended!
AMAZING!!! i love professor pindell- definetly the best in binghamton- interesting lectures as well as assignments. made me become an english major. TAKE ANY CLASS POSSIBLE WITH HIM!!!
Great lecturer. Tough grader. Always entertaining.
this guy def bs's a lot... its an easy class, but sometimes i get really frustrated when he starts a question, doesn't finish it, starts it again, doesn't finish it, and does this again and again... I'm like will u just ask the f***ing question?
Very interesting class, the man is deeply insightful at times yet needs to ramble less, focus more and try to involve the students that aren't such active particpators. Knows how to hold the attention of a audience like no other
Unless you have a burning desire to hear about how he lost his virginity to a 12 yr old girl instead of actually learning material go ahead and take the class. Lectures did not help me in any way and were a waste of my time.
Tries way too hard to be insightful, can't stay on a single topic for more than 30 sec, talks about material completely unrelated to the readings, completely unhelpful, and really really BORING!!!!
Pindell: Aww, c'mawn baybuh...baybuh, pleez, I want your attention, gawddammit...pleez, I'll do anything for your attenchun baybuh... Class: ZZzzzzzzzzzzzzz
Good class...no structure to lectures but its all good. All he does is over analyze the books you read and try to initiate class discussion. Very interesting at times, at other times rediculous. Go to class burnt so you can analyze everything too
The man's a storyteller. Don't expect to be able to contribute or have a discussion in class, he isn't there for you. He's teaching so that he can tell his stories to a captive (literally) audience and be the center of attention. Want a show, fine. Wa
He is passionate about what he teachs. Besides imparting information he comes out with the best one liners during class. If you have to oppertunity to take a class with him DEF do it. but don't expect a typical by the book type setup. He wants creativity
such a great man and inspiration.. take his class.. the work isnt hard and some of the books are really interesting
Don't leave Bing without taking a class with him! He is a great prof!
best professor at this universirty.

Very scattered lectures. No real information imparted. A waste of time.
He's just really hilarious and he makes some really interesting comments

Everyone should take this class! He is my favorite professor! He is so funny and he makes it easy to sit through lecture. I definitely recommend it to anyone that wants to take an english class or needs to complete some gen-eds.
Pindell is by far my favorite professor. He is compassionate about what he teaches and not stuck up like most professors. His classes go by quick and are extrememly interesting. Take any classes you can with him. I've taken three so far and they have all been great!
My TA made this class for me. Pindell is full of it. His books are boring asides from Cuckoo's Nest and he picks them to fill quotas so he doesn't offend anyone. He's obsessed with himself and he's extremely overrated. His lectures are about nothing and his metaphors are extremely flowery.
This man has a reputation that preceeds him. My advice is to only take the class if you really want to. Different people will give entirely different spectrums of thought on this man. Some think he is a genius, others think he is a fool.
I took Narrative Fall 2003. It was alright to deal with Pindell, I believe he appeals more to incoming freshmen as opposed to sophomores. In regards to the classwork, the essays were definitely challenging and your ta can make all the difference in the world. Sit in on a class and judge for yourself
At the beginning of the year he was brilliant and funny, but the quality of his lectures degrades. Now he is occasionally funny and occasionally interesting. A few lectures have been completely empty of any relevant information. Overall, a pretty good class though.
He's class is a waste of time. He hasn't taught us anything of substance, and I don't feel as though my English skills have improved at all. The class is somewhat easy, and the books are interesting, but he will ruin the class for you anyway.
What an obnoxious man! He no real interest in teaching, he just likes hearing himself speak. You will gain no writing skills, even though the class is somewhat difficult. You will gain no insight into literature, and learn nothing of substance. Even Pindell himself doesnt know what the class is on.
I took his Civil War class. This man is a very charismatic character, he makes everything interesting. Some of the books sucked, but Pindell made up for it with his funny phrases. Definately recommend him for non-dumbassfreshmen.
MISOGYNIST ALERT
Pindell is the best professor @ this school...anyone who disagrees with that simply does not understand him.
Absolute waste of time
You read good books and get to analyze the sh** out of them. Anyone that says its a waste of time is stupid. The writing is taught well by the TA's. If you don't know how to write cry me a river, you're in college. What makes the lecture great is the open forum - which is rare here. Great guy
This class was a waste of time. All he talks about is how he went to Yale and how he went to school with famous people. He is immature and does not come to class prepared. I took this class as a freshman writing class however i did not learn anything from Pindell.
I loved going to class. He would not teach, but he would tell his own stories which made me think about life on a deeper level, which was worth more than the class itself. Dont go into it wanting to learn about english, go into it wanting to learn more about yourself. baybuh.
very interesting to talk to, however u do not really learn anything about literature.. looks way to far into little details in books... ta's r terrible n grade horribly... puts people on the spot occasionally but understands if u did not prepare properly.. fun class to go to just to hear him speak
Child of the Corn...Pindell really freaked me out in the first few lectures but you really find his interpretations to be novel and interesting in time. His lectures are worth going to, but TA's all grade pretty strict. Got an A even with bad essay writing skills.
Pindell is all about the deeper meaning.. This class and the things you can learn from it if you just listen will stay with you for years to come. Awesome professor, awesome class.
Pindell is the most amazing teacher I have ever taken in Binghamton, he makes the class so fun and exciting, that its hard to fall asleep. After the first time taking him i decide that I needed to take another class with him because he was so amazing,
Well, his comments are certainly original -- and by that I mean they are complete BS. He makes the most absurd "connections" and gives the literature meanings it does not have. Please, Pindell, these books are great just the way they are -- stop trying to re-write them!
This is not only one of those classes where you don't have to come to lecture, but you shouldn't come to lecture. Everything Pindell says is BS, and he clearly has no understanding of the novels read in class.
If you care at all about Modern American Lit, for God's sake DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! Because he obviously doesn't. Maybe it's hard to teach about books that don't have Spark Notes out yet?
pindell's lectures are very disorganized and he goes off on irrelevant tangents a lot. although his lectures are interesting to listen to, they have nothing to do with the books. he takes easy books and makes them way more complicated than necessary. very confusing class.
If you can take the BS he says during lectures, take his class -- good books and easy grades make it worth it, just ignore him. As a side note, he's in the habit of wearing leather snap-down shirts and cowoby hats ... bizarre.
He has no clue what he's talking about. He just talks for the sake of talking, and he never makes any sense. The comments his makes are offensive and obnoxious. He will destroy perfectly good books, and you will learn nothing from him. His classes are completely disorganized and pointless, and I honestly think half the time he comes to class ****.
Great teacher... Random at times but always enjoyable.
Strange guy but don't let that scare you away. Sometimes I think he sees things in the literature that aren't really there and some of his stories are probably not true, but he will make you think and you will learn a lot from him if you listen to what he says. Was usually willing to consider other viewpoints. Class was not easy but worthwhile.

The grading in this class was relatively easy. The books are easy reads as well, so I would recommend the class if you are looking for an easy grade. And I don't really think his lectures are that bad. . . . the make the class go by quickly.
That man blew my mind.
Not a huge fan of Faulkner but Pindell is amazing. Any kid that hates is class is retarded. Go to his office hours. Bring him caramel frappicinos and he'll be your best friend. Worked for me.
This man made my time at here worthwhile. His teaching style is unorthodox, but let him take you on a canoe ride in his stream of consciousness and you will go on a great vaca every day in class. Grading is easy, the class will be a refreshing change of pace! Use his lectures to come up with Journal ideas, and you'll get half the work done then.
One of the best prof. ever, he's off the wall though. While i enjoy his class, I don't know if my prude american mind can ever handle him again...its a tough call but take a pindell class at least once, you wont regret it (and if you dont, then you dont deserve a degree)
Pindell is . . . well, its hard to really say. He's about as out there as it gets. But he's a pretty good teacher simply due to the fact that he is unbelievably interesting. He may be one of the most entertaining profs I've ever had. Not a really tough class if you think outside the box. You should at least manage a B.
Pindell = life
Not a bad class. All the books read are so interesting. He provides a lot of insight in class so it's a good idea to take notes. Consists of 3 exams on the books read in class. The notes help as jump off points for your essays. Excepts you to be original and insightful. Having a good TA is very important. Tom is an awesome TA!
Pindell is an amazing professor. Insightful, helpful, funny and interesting- I can honestly say he was one of my favorite at Bing. Go to class and pay attention and you'll get an A.
My favorite professor of all time. He loves Faulkner as much as I do. I kept all my papers with his comments. Truly an enlightening experience.
Pindell is one of a kind. Always keeps you entertained, never keeps you the whole time. The grading depends on the TA, who, in my case, graded toughly if you didn't write anything abstract. Still loved the class and Pindell. This was my third class with him.
Get well soon, Prof. Pindell
Farewell Dr. Pindell, if you have gone as the rumors are that you will not be returning from medical illness, please know that almost all of your students will miss you for being a very interesting and good teacher. Perhaps the size of our class mandates that the TA's do all of the grading, but certainly you provided stimulating discussion.
A true mastermind. His profound insights on life will never be able to be reproduced by any teacher on binghamtons campus. He is our schools greatest loss and i hope the truth about his wear-abouts emerge one day
Pindell, God bless you wherever you are. It's nearly twenty years later, but your classes were a major force in my life.
I will remember Professor Pindel for the remainder of my life. He is the reason why I want to teach. He's so witty and funny! He has some of the best damn stories I've ever heard. I read that someone didn't believe them... OH BELIEVE THEM! This man knows all! Pindel rocks on!
My favorite Professor of all time. Going to class was like watching a movie for an hour and a half. His ideas, quotes, and tangents are all incredibly interesting. Unfortunatley, he fell ill, and had to leavey halfway through the semester :( . Best wishes and a speedy recovery, Professor Pindell. If he comes back, TAKE HIS CLASS!
Incoherent babbler. I'm glad he has stories but I'd prefer to hear about the course material. he showed up 20 min late for mid-term, started talking about parking, realized it was exam day, and still gave us the test. We'd show up at the room, he'd be outside smoking because he decided to have class outside. How about telling us?
You either love him or hate him. I happened to love him and I find him hilarious. He frequently goes off on tangents, with absurb comments and stories, but if you have a good sense of humor you'll enjoy every minute of it. I suggest taking a class with Pindell before you graduate, it's an experience in itself.

Crazy, but brilliant.
Pindell is incredible. If more professors were like him, I would take 30 credits a semester!
Love him! He's probably the most intelligent man that I've come across. If you don't excel it's because you never came to lecture and didn't read. Read, come to lecture and he gives you all you need for tests and everything else! Don't complain because u have to think and do work!
LOVE HIM! Not only is he an excellent professor who loves what he teaches, he also loves his students. After his medical leave, our class was his first to come back to. You could see tears in his eyes as he welcomed us back and told us that he had dreamed of us all along while he was sick. Truly excellent teacher, I absolutely love him.
This guy is really great. he has that spirit that just makes you want to hang out with him and talk. try to sit closer to the front cuz he is a low talker. if you do the reading, u should have no problem. I went to class just to see what would come out of his mouth that day, truly a unique character
I took Narrative my freshman year during my first semester. This was my first time ever reading an assigned English book from cover to cover. This professor is devoted to his work and makes the learning process enjoyable. Not a class to sleep through and highly recommended.
Simply put: Pindell is the man. Seriously, if you don't like Pindell then there is something wrong with you. The man is a literary genius. His tests are all essay about the books you have to read. However, the books he assigns are worth reading. He genuinely loves his students and you could talk to him about ANYTHING. A++++++
this guy is a G. Take his class. Change the way you read books.
Pindell is an awesome professor. He makes it enjoyable to come to class
Certainly a character. Great class for the most part. He likes to go off tangent and relate everything to religion. Sure to keep you entertained however.
excellent
The guy is crazzzy. The class was on literature of war, but he spent most of the lecture talking about love and his 5,000+ girlfriends in life. Complete BS class, if you can make your essays prose-y and colorful you'll get an A. I regret taking this class.
Pindell is awesome! Don't expect any more than 5% of the lecture to be even tangentially related to the actual class, but he's got funny stories and good insights. Show up, speak up, and he'll love you. Grading is super easy if you pay any modi****of attention. Mostly just a fun guy.
Amazing teacher. Loved this class soooooooo much, he is truly fantastic.
Had Prof. Pindell for Faulkner,Spirit of Place and another Modern Lit class along with Prof Hagopian, a major influence on me as a young man, and as a HS teacher. "A lie stuck to, is as good as the truth" I wish I took writing because I'm sure his insights into the creative process are awesome. I wish I could find/he published more of his own writi
Pindell is a hilarious man. He always brings some interesting story to the class. Unfortunately though, it does not always relate to the material assigned. Try to keep your own opinions of the text because the TAs will occasionally take points off if you try to relate it to his more out-there stories.
This man is awesome. Truly. He may go on tangents about his daughter or his dogs but I have learned more from him in 5 minutes than I have an entire semester taught by some other Professor. Took him twice during my college career... which I had taken every class he taught.
Prof Pindell is an awesome teacher. His classes are entertaining- he likes to go on random tangents which he then somehow relates back to the material. He makes you read the texts in an entirely new way, analyzing new aspects every time. Pick a seat near the front because he talks softly at times. He's one professor you want to have b4 you graduate
He is probably the best professor in this school. the only thing that suck about his class are his TAs. they are responsible for grading the exams and they are extremely harsh on grading. overall i will recommend this class because pindell is a professor every student need to take before graduating. he is simply weird and a lesbian.
His TA's make the class suck. Often his tangents are so lengthy that he becomes incomprehensible. The kids that laugh at him egg him on and he'll talk about weed for 40 minutes and yet the TA's grade you like hard asses. It's stupid. I'm actually READING the novels, and not getting good grades on the tests.
Pindell is the most profound teacher you will ever have. Thought-provoking, relatable, entertaining, and so much more, you won't want to miss his classes before entering the "real" world. Some say that he is incomprehensible, but I would say that is only for those who do not put forth the intellectual input that his courses require.
Prof. Pindell resinates long after his class ends. He is a pioneer and an entertainer, and his class should not be wasted by people who do not fully commit to his dedication. He is and will always be the King of Bing.
Overall, an enjoyable teacher and is well worth taking a class with. I can see that his personality and VERY relaxed teaching-style can be a little off-putting to some, and he does tend to go on many unrelated rants and tangents in class, but otherwise he has moments of brilliance that make you love and appreciate good storytelling. GREAT books.
Funny dude. he spend more time talking about his daughter, his past relationships, long island people, binghamton weather, his dogs, yale, how he is a lesbian than class material and still love the class
He's really a great person. Real, and feeling, and wants you to get more out of a college education than bs'ing a paper that means nothing to you. He wants you to feel, and think in ways you haven't done previously. He wants to inspire. Have fun with this class, and it will be worth it. Not a typical class, but also good if you want an A.
honestly, i loved this class. it was irrelevant most of the time because he talked more about his life experiences than the texts, but he has lived an amazing life. such an easy a. i recommend it.
The class was more of a leisurely activity to attend, I enjoyed hearing his viewpoints of the books and the tests were really easy. The TA is very friendly. Honestly, just listen to what he says and you'll get an A in the course. Like a previous student noted, he talks a lot about pot, his daughter and living in Binghamton. Great class.
Professor Pindell is the most amazing professor I have had since I've been at Bing. He assigns amazing books and says the most insightful things about them. I have honestly changed because of his class and still think about what he says. Take a Pindell class before you graduate!
Professor Pindell is a really interesting guy. He is very friendly but absolutely eccentric. He's not for everyone, but still a great guy. The class was not terribly difficult. We just have 3 essay exams in class. If you read the books (and they aren't bad) you should do fine. The TA seems nice and he's usually willing to talk after class.
Best and most interesting professor ive ever had in my life. great guy when you get to know him. got two A's in both classes and i plan on taking a class with him every semester until i graduate. he teaches with his life stories, which are endless.
AWESOME TEACHER!! has awesome stories, and if half of them are true, this guy has had an exciting life. Try and take a smaller class with him so there are no TAs. The TAs are really harsh graders so it's harder to get a good grade. Love Pindell- he's a must have
All of the rating metrics here don't apply to Pindell's teaching style. He teaches the truth, and is absolutely brilliant at it. He is not your usual lit teacher, but he is awesome. I highly recommend his class.
Pindell is the man. He speaks from life experience a lot, often going on funny tangents. You don't have to go to class if you have someone to sign you in every day, but they're certainly entertaining. Read the books, you'll get an A. Don't want to read? Use Sparknotes, you'll probably still get an A.
Pindell is hilarious in a laid back and vulgar way. His knowledge of war and tangents on life make the class worth attending. Beware, he speaks softly, and nothing he says is relevant to the in-class essay questions. We made up our own questions most of the time. The books are worth reading, but you can get an A just from movies/Sparknotes.
DO NOT TAKE A CLASS WITH HIM. I got an A on the first exam, had perfect attendance, but got only a b+ in what should've been an easy A. You can't contact him because he DOESN'T HAVE AN EMAIL ADDRESS. Or an office! Or show up at class on time! He babbles for an hour about NOTHING. He's literally the worst professor I've ever had!!
What is there to say about Pindell? You will be confused. Baffled, even. You'll wonder why you aren't even opening the book or where he came up with these seemingly nonsensical questions. But you will learn. What exactly will you learn? I guess whatever he feels like teaching you that day. Pindell's the best. I truly mean that.
Lost about 7-8 of our midterms and gave us all A's. Always lets you at atleast 30min early.
