he's a good teacher. make sure u read the book and understand the chapter before u take the test. and do all the homework problems he assigns in class. his lectures and clear and easy to understand. i recommed this teacher for organic and general chemistry :)
Very good professor who knows how to present the subject matter in a manner that is understandable. He goes out of his way to make sure one understands the material regardless of how stupid a student's question may be. However, one must do the assigned home work questions and review lecture notes in order to do well.
he's really nice and always willing to answer ur questions. fair grader, recommend him for chem 101!
Very nice guy. He can present material very clearly.
He is a great professor! He really knows his chemistry and is very helpful! I would highly reccomended him!
Dr. Pires is an excellent professor. He teaches the material in a clear manner so you understand it right away. He's also approachable and is always willing to answer your questions. If you pay attention in class, test days are actually fun, maybe more, then a game of Pac-Man since he gives you all the right tools to do well.
Pires rockz!!
Extremely helpful. Excellent at simplifying complicated concepts.
pires is the man!
If you are taking Organic Chemistry at Montgomery College and you are not taking this man's class, you are missing out, outstanding professor.
Very good Professor and very helpful.
He?s a good teacher, but sometimes in lectures he stumbles. He gives you practice exams from previous years to practice on, which are good. His test are fair, and he won?t test you on anything you didn?t cover I class. He?s a merciful grader, and the best chemistry teacher at the college. I won?t recommend any other teacher than him.
DONT TAKE HIM!! me, and several other students got this question wrong on the test even tho it was the CORRECT answer and he took more than half off just because we didnt use his way...his way is MORE complicated. hes just NOT fair! im never taking him ever again. youd be smart to do the same. DO NOT be fooled by his good rating. take bontems.
Pires is the man. He has this kinda geeky quiet awkwardness to him, but its amusing. Great teacher, and tests are no surprises. Office help is also always available.
He?s a good teacher overall but sometimes not clear on what he wants to point out. His practice exams are simpler, so don?t be fooled and just expect for his test to be easy because their more difficult, and getting more difficult every semester. Moreover, his point distribution sucks because if you get 2 multiple-choice wrong, your down to a B.
He does not explain the material clearly. It seems like he himself does not really understand the material he is teaching. He does not provide answer keys to practice exams, which make them useless. The tests mostly cover material presented in class. I would reccomend going to the science learning center a lot to keep on top of things.
This man is a beast!! I love this man.. Best Chem. professor at MC Germantown. He knows what he is talking about, and knows his stuff.. He is in his 99.9% of the times. Even if it is not his office hours, he will still help you. I don't know why some people hate on him, maybe chem ain't your thing. However,it don't mean he is bad at teaching!
Boring. His tests are not hard. Not hard to get a good grade but I don't like his teaching. There are worse teachers than him though, so I would recommend him for chem cause the other options are worse.
He?s a good professor overall. He explains things well, but sometimes skips details in mechanisms. His practice exams are nothing like the exams, so just study his notes and be able to apply what you learn. His quizzes are much easier than exams. I would recommend to still study. I would recommend him over any other chemistry professor.
I had Dr. Pires for Chem 2, and he is one of the best professors I've had in college. Nice, caring, and knows how to teach. If you pay attention in class, you know exactly what's coming on the test.
he's a really, really good teacher.
Great teacher. He makes it easy to understand and if you pay attention and do the suggested homework then you will do good in this class.
Mr. Pires is an extremely helpful teacher. He will help you anytime you have questions or problems. Just do the homework problems and sample problems to prepare for the test. I would recommend him to anyone. He's the best teacher everr.
He is such a goof ball. His lab class is really easy! The lecture is so easy too; the tests are simple! Take him for CH203!
He is the best professor ever! I've had him for couple of semesters and I think that he is the best professor at MC! He is very helpful and funny with his weird sense of humor. He is very clear and no suprises on the tests! I highly recommend everyone to take him for chemistry
Dr. Pires is awesome!! He made me like Chemistry (which I never thought would happen) He has such a great attitude and is super laid back. He makes all kind of dorky jokes and is incredibly helpful. I recommend him!! C:
So if you ever want to learn chemistry or even pass chemistry take it with this prof. I have had him for 4 semesters passing from general chem to orgo 2. His lectures are clear, very helpful outside of class, and he isn't one to trick you. ALL exams are fair to the notes in lecture. Besides that he has a sense of humor and make class time priceless
I had him for Orgo 1 lab, and I WISH he was my lecture professor! He explains material extremely well, and he's very personable. It's a shame I won't have an opportunity to learn from him again.
BEST TEACHER EVER...He is my favorite teacher...I wish all the teachers had his personality...he is so nice and very helpful...I had him for all my chemistry classes and I only enjoyed chemistry because of him...DR.PIRES is just a great person...he is an excellent teacher...I am just speechless...
Onoe of the best professors EVER!! I LOVED HIMMMM!!!! and would recommend him to anyone and everyone. He is extremely clear and explains everything in details. Make sure you do the practice sheets hegives, VERY helpful. He is very kind and wants to help his students. I loved him so much that i am taking him again in chem 102 =)
this is going to sound repetitive, but dr. pires is really the universe's best chem prof, hands down. he knows everything there is to know about chem,& most importantly, he knows how to teach it. he is very fair, u do 50%, he gives 71%. u hve no reason not to pass.plus, he is hilarious, makes the funniest dork jokes.
great professor. he grades more then fairly and drops your lowest test. he explains everything great and you will have done at least half the test if you do the homework problems. I took him for 101 and had him as my teacher for all the rest of my chem classes cause he made it so easy and fun to learn.
I took him for the first semester of Organic Chemistry in 2007. He seriously knows how to teach. Believe me I have had a lot of professors in the sciences and math..I thank God I had him for that semester.Seriously if you can, I'd recommend you take him for Organic Chemistry.
Dr. Pires is great professor..he makes chemistry so easy but his test can be tricky..do the homework he gives in class so it can help you for the test..he is more than a fair grader..totally recommended i am taking him again for 102..he is the man good luck :)
He has completly changed and i do not like it. He now could care less and makes his exams hard...Class average is C- ...umm very scary best of luck.
Prof. Pires lectures SO WELL, I had no problem understanding the concepts. Study hard for his tests, do the HW problems/his old exams (on the showme website) and you should be well off. He isn't very approachable/ always serious but great professor. Answers questions very well. I recommend to skim chapter prior to class! Good luck.
VERY HELPFUL PROFESSOR BUT NOT EASY ABOUT POINTS.HIS LECTURE IS SOMETIME CONFUSING.HIS IS BETTER COMPARED TO OTHERS.
The best prof, I've ever had. He is teaching perfectly.
VERY HELPFUL PROFESSOR, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND HIM, DO YOUR PART AND YOU WILL BE FINE
One of the best Very clear lectures very approachable and extremely knowledgeable. If you''ve ever watched Lost he is a clone of Daniel Faraday he seems a little absent minded but he''s not. I would highly recommend. I took him for a summer course and even in the compressed time I was able to follow everything just fine.
Takes time to help out his students.
Dr. Pires rocks! Don't take anyone else. Wish that I took him earlier in chemistry, sad I can't take him again, made me actually love chem! His lectures are great, explains clearly and knows EVERYTHING. you really need to work hard, keep up with lectures and practice assigned problems even though he doesn't check them, they're on exams.
This guy's lectures are amazingly clear. From reading the notes and the practice problems you should be able to follow the info very clearly. If not he is available pretty much whenever you need him to answer questions. Chemistry is a tough subject but Dr. Pires makes it not seem that way. If I had to take Orgo 2 I'd stay at MC to take it with him
He made my Chemistry Lab seem like a 4th grade science class. Everything he explains is supremely clear and easy. Helps you when you're stuck and is really chill with deadlines. Prelabs are mandatory and read before you come to lab on Friday to pass the prelab quizzes. Make sure you have him as your lab professor!
Best professor ever... nice, organazie, clear... love his class... highly recommended... :)
He was the best chemistry professor I ever had. His lectures were clear and he was reallly funny and helpful. If you don't understand something, just ask and he will definitely help you. His tests and grades were fair. As long as you follow his notes, you will do well in his class.
I can not say enough good things about Dr. Pires! He was the most incredible chemistry professor and really made learning orgo interesting and easy!
He is an amazing professor and really helps you understand the concepts. Totally recommend him for chem 132
I was being lazy but if you want to get in A in this class, you must pay attention and practice a lot!
very difficult class, he makes each exam harder than the year previous. good with lecture but has an attitude if you ask a questions he thinks is dumb.
BEST professor I have ever had. I took him for ogo 1, now taking him for orgo 2. he teaches the hardest materials making it seem like Its 2+2. If you want to LEARN chemistry take it with him and listen to his lectures. exams are mainly on the worksheets that he posts on bb.
Lectures are clear and concise with a lot of examples. He has a lot of resources on BB for practice. He encourages questions and answers them. Makes lab easy bc he explains the procedure and is attentive to help. PRACTICE AND STUDY this class isn't hard but there's A LOT of material covered. Pires' is accommodating, kind, & funny. Highly recommend.
Professor Pires is very clear on the lectures, gives lots of examples, answers questions with great patience and gives suggested homework from textbook and problems handed out in class which are helpful. He gives extra credits (by attending spectrum lectures), each is worth 2 points. He's a funny and respectable Professor.
Nice prof & good grader. His exams are ok, but if you study notes & other exams it helps a lot! He writes all over the board so B prepared to take notes. He provides many handouts to practice w/.
He's a really chill guy and he's nice and everything but his lectures have very little structure and if you aren't extremely attentive you will miss a lot of things and it will be really hard to follow. People say he's the best but his way of teaching is like reading a textbook. If you don't find that difficult you'll probably be fine.
Overall the professor is very nice. However, his way of teaching the material can be very confusing. Exams can be tough especially the MC questions.
Professor Pires wants his students to pass. While there is a lot of homework, done in class, he will always help answer questions if necessary. The homework is heavily reliant on helping and being helped by your fellow classmates, so get ready to socialize.
Such an amazing professor! He really cares about his students and their understanding of the material. If you don't understand something, he is more than willing to go over it again for you. He gives lots of helpful examples during his lectures which are very similar to the questions on his exams. I would take his class again any day!!
Professor Pires is a great chemistry instructor. I am very pleased that I took my first chem class with him. He is funny, caring, and helpful. He wants his students to pass. He provides lots of examples during his lecture that are similar to his tests. Be Very Attentive during his lectures. Check your BB regularly, he provides lots of helpful tools
He is a great professor but his handwriting is hard to understand and he rushes his lectures sometimes. However, his tests are very fair and are on all the things weve learned in class and are very similar to the work we do in discussion or the examples he goes over in class.
Professor Pires is the best Chem professor at Montgomery College. There are quizzes almost every class for a couple points and he is an easy grader. Although i did get a B, the transition to online class was difficult. I worked hard enough but if you work harder this class can be passed with an A. He is a great professor take him!
Professor Pires is by far the best professor I have ever had during this pandemic and before as well. His way of teaching is sometimes a bit messy but it always makes sense. I took him for chem 131 as well and he was amazing. He is one of the best professors at MC, would strongly recommend him.
One of the best professors I've ever had.
AWESOME CHEM Professor. I took all my chem classes with him and I am glad I did. If you want to learn chemistry, I would highly recommend Dr. Pires. All you need to pass his class with an A: prepare before class, attend his lectures and labs, participate in group discussions, ask questions in/outside class, go through his materials on bb, and DO HW
Prof Pires is an amazing teacher. He really wants his students to succeed and is never condescending when answering questions. He drops your lowest quiz score and exam score which is great. He also gives past exams that you can use for practice and they are formatted like your exams. Highly recommend taking his class! You'll do great if you try!
I normally don't go to MC, but professor Pires is the best professor I have ever had. His lectures are clear and he answers questions we had. I took the summer chem 2 session and because of prof. Pires it became one of my favorite classes I've taken. Exams are exactly like the practice problems. He grades very generously in lab and discussion 10/10
Practice exams are like the real ones. He won't make you feel stupid at all, he is one of the best profs I've had in chem. DO THE PRACTICE PROBLEMS IN EACH CHAPTER THEY HELP A LOT. I suggest writing all the reactions and mechanisms throughout the class on a notes page to make life easier. With how stressful things may get, he tells you he's proud.
The only time I saw my grade was during midterms, which was annoying. The class itself was difficult, but his recording of the lectures even though it was in-person was very helpful. At the end of the lectures, he went around and tried to help everyone with our "discussion" classwork. He answers emails quickly
Honestly the best professor I took at MC. He made chemistry seem a lot easier than it was and almost everything from lecture which is explained well is on the exam. Though his grading is strict in lab
Lovely professor. A bit messy and a little crazy, but as long as you read the class notes, ask questions when you don't understand, and participate to ensure your understanding- you'll do just fine. I actually understoof organic chemistry thanks to him.
Super cool professor. His lectures gave you everything you needed to know for the exams. I wish there were more 'graded' stuff like problem sets other than just quizzes and tests but other than that I got no complaints. he teaches very clearly and encourages you to ask questions
I really enjoyed this professor. Overall his lectures and labs were very clear and he was always willing to help make sure you grasped the material. His exams were straightforward and were similar to the material taught in lecture.
Loved this professor. Really cares about his students. Take him!! If you work hard, he will definitely recognize it and reward you.
Professor Pires is great! I really enjoyed his lectures. He does well to ensure his students understand the material he is teaching. His exams are straightforward and come from the work examples, discussions, and problems he gives for solving as he teaches every new topic. Definitely taking his chem 203 and 204 classes if he is listed,
ok so i'll be honest, i don't understand why the other reviews were good LOL. his teaching style is extremely messy, so for people with structure that's gonna cause you trouble. we're graded by very few things, and his teaching doesn't go into depth about what we need to know for exams, which is frustrating. hes sweet, but won't be taking him again
He is very sweet and caring, genuinely cares about his students, and although chem isn't easy he tries to help us understand by explaining things in different ways. he is very knowledgeable and overall a great professor. His handwriting is a bit messy but no one is perfect, just ask to clarify if you don't understand something.
Professor Pires is a great professor. He is unorganized and doesn't have the best handwriting, but if you look past that he simplifies the topics really well. He does not post grades on Blackboard. The exams, quizzes, and extra credit are the only things determining your grade. He is also the most available professor out of all the orgo professors.
Professor Pires is a great professor. He is unorganized and does not have the best handwriting. But, if you look past that he really simplifies the topics in an understandable way. The exams, quizzes, and extra credit are the only things determining your grade. He drops the lowest quiz and exam. Does not use Blackboard. Great availability.
This guy is genuinely the GOAT of teaching organic he is very disorganized but he makes up for it by making his exams and quizzes the easiest thing possible. if you are struggling with this class use CHADPREP it is a great resource and it teaches a lot of things that he goes over in class. Overall a great professor and amazing lecture
Dr Pires is a really good teacher. His teaching style can take some time to get used to just because he moves pretty quickly. He cares a lot about his profession which I think says a lot as well. He is willing to work with students as well to help accommodate and he is a very reasonable professor that takes scheduling conflicts into consideration.
Honestly, his lectures were horrible. You cannot read his handwriting, and he goes very fast, so you do not really learn anything in class. Get ready to study and learn outside of class. Also, there is no room for error, as his final is 200 points. Yeah, he drops a quiz and a lecture, but it does not matter if you do badly on the final or lab.
He has no issue going over things and explaining himself again on topics that were covered. His tests are quite challenging in terms of multiple-choice questions, but a lot of his material is covered on study guides and in discussions.
Although he is very good with office hours and accessibility outside of class. His lectures and videos online were not helpful when it came in time for the exam. He goes really fast and his online resources are heavily outdated. You cannot read his handwriting and there were not many assignments or room to make mistakes. I learned mostly outside.
