Very lucent; exam was a bit tricky.
An absolutely brilliant man, capable of making even Fed Tax an interesting course. His exam is a bit of a nightmare; to get anything higher than a B or B+, you'll really have to know your stuff cold. Probably one of the best professors I've ever had and certainly one of the top ones at the law school.
The man is simply "off the charts" brilliant and a gifted teacher. His final was the most difficult exam I've ever taken. That notwithstanding, I highly recommend this course and taking it with this teacher.
The only one on the faculty with a truly international reputation. Everywhere I go people ask "what is he like." The most creative, amazing, and entertaining mind I have ever seen, and I was an undergrad at Yale. The only prof I would actually hire as my lawyer. Extraordinary insights into how the world works. Take this class even if you hate tax.
Take this class just to watch a creative, brilliant, and hysterically funny mind at work. A truly gifted mind and teacher. Each class was like he was conducting a symphony. Absolutely extraordinary. But guys beware, the women go nuts over him.
Best professor I've had in my life. Period.
Prof. Pomp was the highlight of my law school experience and easily the best teacher I have ever had. His expectations from his students were high, but the payoff was equally high. He is truly a gifted professor.
I just finished an LL.M. in tax at the best school in the country. I graduated right at the top of the class thanks to Pomp. I understood the deep structure of the Code more than anyone else. I knew how to think about tax better than anyone else. The faculty here also treated Pomp as a giant in the field as did the Wall Street firm that hired me.
He made me grow and stretched me a way no one else did. High expectations and by meeting them I learned how to think on my own. Now that I am practising law, I realize he is the only one who taught me how to think like a lawyer. By the way, I got my job in NY because the interviewer had heard of Pomp and was impressed by my grade with him.
He is a FANTASTIC professor. I learned a lot from him and his classes, and even developed an interest in tax law (never would've expected that!) He explains things very clearly, but he expects a lot from his students so be prepared to put the time into the class!
Opens class by warning students against asking stupid questions. Unapproachable. Unorthodox multiple choice exam - fact patterns span the better part of a page each. Class participation consists of two opportunities to speak in class and can result in a full letter grade penalty.
Fed Tax Rocks! Entertaining & informative. Little casebook reading & modest amount from the superb Chirelstein. Homework is easy & intuitive for the first 2/3rds of the semester (if you've read) and he calls based on the seating chart--you are pretty certain when it's your turn. So he gets curt when you stall. Exam is tough, but his curve sweet.
I had no interest in tax before Pomp and now I'm soon to be a tax attorney. Pomp is amazing. I had him for two classes and was his RA for a year and wish he taught more I could take. Don't hesitate to take his classes!
Best professor I have had in law school. He is genuine and speaks his mind. He isn't an ivory tower thinker that believes he is better than his students like some of the professors are; he treated us like adults. His class was absolutely phenomenal. Chirelstein is more important than the casebook.
This was my third class with Pomp. I have seen yet another side. There is Pomp the litigator, Pomp the adviser to governments, Pomp the interpreter of incoherent code,Pomp the economist, Pomp the counselor, Pomp the tax planner, Pomp the political pundit. Three courses and all these different sides emerge.I had no interest in tax until Pomp.
I never even knew tax existed before pomp and now I am going for the certificate and working this summer in NYC in a tax firm. He is magic and a rock star. Everyone down here knows of him.
The most extraordinary prof in all my years. His enthusiasm is contangious. Can make the most difficut topics understandable. I brought my father to class who teaches at Yale (not law). He noticed something i never did. Pomp teaches without a note! My father agreed with me that it was an extraordinary classroom performance.
at the law school reunion we asked who were the faculty that had the biggest impact on us. Hands down it was pomp. somehow his class parables anticipated what we would run into in our careers. his advice on how to get a job and keep it was worth tuition. none of us are full fledged tax lawyers but we can handle the tax issues in our fields.
Extraordinary ability to explain the most complicated material in the most understandable manner. my father is a judge and said that pomp was one of the two best lawyers to ever appear before him.
At our recent reunion in NYC I learned about this site. what was amazing was that the number one prof everyone talked about at the reunion was pomp. thirty years later, and we still remember the basic principles of tax. we could not even remember the names of the rest of the faculty. Take him whether you think you will like tax or not (you will)
What I love about this site is that alums can reflect on their experiences. As a student you like faculty who pander to you, spoon feed you, don't hassle you. But after being out for 15 years, I have a better perspective. About the only one (or maybe 2) of the faculty who taught me how to think was Pomp. Demanding, yes. Fun, yes. Invaluable, yes.
Just came back from the reunion where people were talking about this site. Lots of Pompisms. We all knew he was internationally famous but I was sitting at a bar in Reykavik Iceland when Pomp appeared on Icelandic TV. The show looked like a clone of 60 Minutes. I told the bartender I was his student and got comped drinks for the night. Awesome.
This site is a great watering hole for alums. At the recent reunion we talked about 9/11. We had Pomp from 9-11. At the break we heard about the Trade Centers. We came back and watched a TV in the room and drifted out. Pomp gave the most comforting talk with our small group that I ever heard. And was prophetic about how the world would change.
This site should be the offical one for alums. 25 years out and I still remember the Pompisms. For example, many things in life are like a lobster pot (or Providence RI), easier to get into than to get out of. One of my associates quoted Dr Ruth when I talked about Pomp: a lesson taught with humor is a lesson learned
Awesome. Spectacular. He Rocks. He Gets It!!!
I missed a tax issue as a new partner. The firm was panicked. The stakes were high. Pomp flew out, met with the partners, laid out a strategy, and made the issue go away with minimal damage. Could not have been any nicer. Savvy, nonjudgmental, strategic. The firm was so impressed that they now call him for emergencies.
I just finished. I don't even care about my grade. This is a course that goes beyond just tax. It deals with real world issues like handling client expectations, office politics, billing issues, business generation, judges, presenting a case, wordsmithing, rhetoric, elevator speeches etc. Unlike most of the faculty, pomp has practiced law!
went home over Christmas and my father could not believe me. Thanks to Pomp, I could talk to my dad about stock, bonds, annuities, deferred comp, depreciation, amortization, tax reforms by Congress, yaddy yaddy. He looked at me like "what happened to you." He was disappointed when I did not get into a better school, but he has changed his mind now
He spent hours with me getting me ready for the final. Always patient, warm, sympathetic. I got a B+. I could not believe it. I thought I was going to hook the course.
Brilliant but down to earth. Actually welcomes student interaction. Visit him in his office. He is even funnier there than in class. I had no idea how famous he was until my father told me Pomp is the country's leading state tax lawyer. I should have figured that out from the way he talked about lawyering skills.
Professor Pomp was by far the most organized of all my instructors. His reading assignments are brief and focused. Despite being so focused, he keeps everything light and approachable. He is extremely giving of his time despite his busy schedule. With his help and support I was accepted to NYU's LLM Tax program and landed a Tax M&A job in NYC.
Lots of UConn Law grads in my family who made me take Pomp. To my amazement I am now going for the tax certificate. This course opened my eyes to so much about the world. My father came to class and said Pomp is even better than when he had him years ago. Pomp sees and understands so much about how firms work, and what pitfalls to avoid. Awesome.
I don't even care about my grade. This class was extraordinary. Pomp is a wealth of insight into everything. I learned so much about lawyering in general, tax specifically, and stuff I never even knew existed. Pomp is obviously an experienced lawyer and willing to share his mistakes with the class so we don't repeat them on our own.
He is the best professor Ive ever had, the wisest person Ive ever met. His courses are amazing. He taught me how to think, how to write, and how to be a professional. I work at a top tax firm in NYC; my offer was based solely on his recommendation. Every day I draw upon the lessons he taught me. If you're at UConn, you must take his course.
This site is great. The law school does not care about the opinions of its grads so this is our site. We know who the great teachers were that made a difference in our careers. The other day a client asked me to tear up an irrevocable trust. I heard Pomp's voice after all these years, cut a corner for a client and they own you the rest of your life
Someone turned me onto this site. Bravo. I took Pomp at night. My study group all had real work experience. We agreed Pomp was wasted on the kids who had never worked. His advice on how to survive a law firm went over their heads. His parables were famous. I use them for our new associates.
I took this course because of Pomp. Now I got a job because of it. Who knew. Pomp and Conway are a magnificent combo. Both have litigated big cases and the kind of insight they share you cannot get from a book (or other faculty) They have enormous respect for each other and it shows. You will learn all about Indian law so this is two courses in one
Pomp is truly a tax-law expert. His lectures speak to everyone, regardless of academic background or professional interests. His classes can at times seem somewhat long, but he covers an incredible amount of information during the semester. Final exam is long and grueling, but fair.
I am taking my exam now and crying. And I'm really not the kind of person to be emotionally affected by an exam. Pomp provides an experience so set apart from other professors that it's a travesty not to take him. But be ready to work harder than you ever worked and then still feel like its enough. The previous poster is correct re: outside exp.
I learned more from him about the practice of law than taking a clinic. Exam was fair but challenging. He picked up the phone and got me an interview (which I blew). I will take every course he offers.
You will work hard but you will learn at the feet of a master. Tough love. He is world famous and known by everyone. You can take a soft course and get an A but that won't help you survive in a firm. There are easier courses but none like this one. Take it and suck it up and push yourself.
I was scared but went to him with a very serious personal problem. My friends said to do it. I needed an adults perspective. He was awesome. Listened, didn't judge me, didn't tell me what to do, but helped me think through my options, gave me great feedback, and a new idea. Wish he was my therapist. Oh, he is also awesome in class.
Pomp is the most humble, down to earth professor on the faculty. He took part in many of the cases that we read but never once mentioned that. Someone discovered that from talking to an interviewer and then we googled the cases. Compare that with someone who never argued before the SCT but claims he "appeared" there.
You come to class thinking the answer is X and under gentle prodding you move 180 degrees to Y. Then later you arrive at Z. Pomp is the heir to Socrates. I finally learned what thinking like a lawyer was all about. If you want to know what he believes about any issue read his articles.
Professor Pomp is simply the best educator I have come across as a lifetime student. He is UConn Law's best asset, and a national leader in tax. Pomp's classes were the highlight of my law school experience & if I never encounter a single tax controversy Pomp will still have had a profound impact on my career. A must take.
This is a must for any law student, regardless of academic or professional interests. The course covers an unbelievable amount of information, which can at times be overwhelming. Put in the effort and it will pay off. Subject matter aside, Professor Pomp's understanding of and passion for the practice of law is reason enough to take this course.
Each year scores of students enter his classes with a plebeian understanding of tax, and only a faint idea of how the world works. Lucky for them, the Universitys wisest mind belongs to its best communicator. With an unrivaled knack for making incredibly difficult, or opaque concepts easy to understand, student's minds come alive. A must take.
Easily the law school's best asset. He is a great mentor and has ignited my passion for tax. His ability to make you understand complex ideas is second to none. As the leading expert in his field, he is an expert witness for the most important cases, yet ALWAYS finds time for his students. The knowledge he bestows on you is priceless! A must take.
Professor Pomp is hands down the best tax professor I've ever had. He makes complicated material both engaging and easy. Professor Pomp is obviously very intelligent and accomplished yet his lectures are easy to follow and simply make sense. Further, if you ever need help or career advice, Professor Pomp is your guy. He is always willing to help.
AWESOME, wise, worldly, eloquent, great experiences, kind, gentle, supportive, encouraging, nourishing, wants you to succeed, on your side, totally accessible for advice on anything, a treasure. we all love him.
I went to my nieces UConn Law graduation and heard about this site there . I graduated 20 yrs ago. Pomp was the MC at the grad and I have never seen a graduation like this one and I have been to lots. He was phenominal. Set the best tone ever. Made it feel like a family affair. Brought back all these good memories when I had him in tax.
Pomp's parables are better than the Bibles. Listen carefully.
He teaches this three credit course in a four credit format. We spend the first hour talking about current events. Best hour I have ever spent. He ties everything together. Sees connections and themes everywhere. It is like having a discussion with the wisest smartest most worldly person there is. Absolutely amazing. Just sit in for the first hour.
The year I took Multistate, we had too many outsiders coming only for the first hour. It was SRO. He finally had to close the class only to those enrolled. This was the best course in law school. The only class that incorporated into the curriculum what was in the news that morning. I held my own with interviewers because of that and got a job offe
Disclosure: Prof. Pomp is my advisor so I may be biased. However, not only is he is the best professor at UConn hands down, but he is a nationally respected tax expert. He is chair of the acceptance committee and cares very much about UConn Law School.
I didn't realize how much I learned until my summer job in NYC. The firm had a big tax case that I got "stuck on" with a bunch of other summer people. Some were from Yale, Columbia and Harvard (what was I doing there?) I had to explain tax to them! I was really a star and it got me an offer.
This is a 3 credit course taught in a 4 hr block. The first hr is current tax events. It is like a conversation with the smartest person ever. He range of knowledge is out of sight. We covered everything from the less developed countries (who he advised) to the EU, which has had him lecture to them, to the Indians (whose codes he drafted).
I am an alum, partner in AM100 firm. The only professor that made a difference was pomp. Learned how to read a statute, a case, how to structure an argument, how to negotiate, how to plan a transaction, how to deal with clients. Learned how the world works, how to handle bullies and intimidation. He had real world experience unlike most of the rest
There were a few of us conservatives in class. Federalist Soc. Never did we feel isolated or unwelcome. You never know where pomp stands on any issue. He is great at hiding his politics and is even handed and welcomes all views. Even had us reading the WSJ. Class discussion was balanced and sophisticated. Wish the rest of the faculty was like him.
You are wasting your time and money if you do not take a class with Professor Pomp. Sure, he'll teach you about tax. But he will also teach you how to be a person.
Federal Income Tax with Professor Pomp was, by far, my favorite class from my 1L year. Professor Pomps lectures are interesting and engaging, and he is always available outside of class. Regardless of your focus area, the material is universally relevant and the skills you learn, like how to read a statute, will help you in all of your classes.
Professor Pomp is truly one of UConn Laws greatest professors. Personally, he is the best professor I have ever had. While his classes are not easy, what you learn under his guidance will help you become a better attorney. Professor Pomp is a phenomenal writer and taking his class will undoubtedly elevate your educational experience at UConn Law.
Professor Pomp is phenomenal. He makes dense material interesting and inspires even the most ardent non-tax enthusiast with the desire to do well. Pomp teaches you how to read cases, interpret statutes, identify subtext, make legal arguments, and be an all around better attorney. He also cares about students and makes himself available for advice.
Native American Tax is one of the most unique and interesting courses at UConn Law. Professor Pomp is a world-renowned authority in the area and not only teaches students the intricacies of building and arguing a Supreme Court case, but also how to research and craft legal arguments in unsettled areas of law. Its so much more than a tax class!
The best course at UConnLaw, taught by its best prof. The time spent discussing current tax events is invaluable. He teaches you how to critically read and cut through political subtext saturating tax news, while getting you into the habit of reading legal news - a skill that will make you a better lawyer. And all this happens before his lecture.
Multistate Taxation was my favorite course. We spent the first hour of each class discussing current events, providing us with chance to think critically about real-world issues impacted by state tax policy. It's clear he cares about making students better lawyers and will always make time to offer advice and assistance in furthering career goals.
Professor Pomp was the most inspirational professor Ive ever had. He has this incredible ability to make tax law sound interesting and fun. From UPS Uniforms to Beach Boys songs, Professor Pomp planned out exactly how to demonstrate sometimes arcane tax law rules in a fun and memorable way. I chose my career based upon Professor Pomps influence.
The best decision I made in law school was signing up for Pomp's Federal Income Tax class. Coming from a humanities background, I didn't know anything about finance, taxes, stocks, etc. Pomp changed all that. Pomp is endlessly engaging. He makes tax exciting and meaningful. And he is an excellent storyteller who will constantly make you laugh.
Professor Pomp is the best teacher I had in law school. He is an amazing lecturer who easily breaks down complex SALT principles into bite sized, understandable pieces. After taking one of his classes, I loved his teaching style so much that I made sure to take all of his other classes. His classes have easily given me the most value in Law School.
Professor Pomp is one of my favorites professors I've ever had. I did not expect to have any interest in tax when I started law school but Professor Pomp promptly changed that. His lectures are interesting and engaging, he offers real world insight and considerations, and he's always available outside of class. You won't regret taking a Pomp class.
Do yourself and your career a favor and take tax with Prof. Pomp. Fed income was the last course I thought I wanted to take during law school. I was wrong. Prof Pomp somehow makes tax super interesting. The little bit I learned helped me impress my supervisor during an insurance internship and its helped me work with clients in the asylum clinic.
Professor Pomp is the most incredible professor I had in law school! He is inspiring, brilliant and ensures his students understand the reality of the subject. I highly recommend Professor Pomp!
Professor Pomp is a fantastic teacher. I took several of his courses during law school and enjoyed them all. He provides fantastic real world examples from his own practice and sometimes brought in great guest lecturers.
Professor Pomp is the reason to go to UConn Law or NYU. He is an incredible professor with an innate ability to inspire. He goes to bat for his students and is always looking to help them succeed, ever far after they've graduated from law school. Class with Professor Pomp is always engaging, you'll learn a lot about tax and good lawyering.
Like many Chinese students I came to UConn to study tax under Prof Pomp. His 1979 lectures in Dalian are taught throughout China and led to the countrys modern tax system. He has been my mentor and friend. His daughter is adopted from China and he has always taken a special interest in the Chinese students, serving as their advisor.
I am the managing partner at a major firm and had pomp 10 yrs ago. I train associates and use many pompisms when I do that. He was so sophisticated, insightful, prophetic, and experienced from all of his famous cases. He did not pander to ue like others, set the bar high by example, and looking back, the only person who helped turn me into a lawyer
Ten years ago I had my CPA and decided to become a tax lawyer. I got into law schools that were a bit higher ranked than UConn but i was counseled to go to UConn because of Pomp. He transformed my life. He is unlike anyone before or since both in his mind and personality. Off the charts. I have since sent many others to UConn and no one is sorry.
Brilliant and accessible speaker
I wanted to study tax law in Boston. Sat in at BU, BC, and NE. Friends made me come to UCONN and sit in on Pomp. In a league of his own. Class was rigorous but atmosphere was loose, supportive, nurturing, and fun. Told my parents. They said UConn is well below the others. My father is an accountant and he checked and heard Pomp was a god. Done deal
Prof. Pomp's good humor and sharp insight bring tax law to life. He is a dedicated teacher who helped me to succeed in his class, in law school, and on the job market. I know many, many of his students feel the same way, and continue to stay in touch years after graduation. There's a reason he wins so many awards.
My mother made me take Pomp. She had him decades ago. I had no interest in tax but I took him. It changed my life. He is magic. His course is magic. My mother came to class with me and at the end she looked at me and smirked as if to say "I told you so."
Made tax law interesting and, shockingly, fun. Fairly brilliant guy.
Our study group spent an evening figuring out what makes him the GOAT. He is warm, supportive, nurturing, empathetic, a mentor, takes calls early in the AM and late PM. Totally chill. He has nothing to prove. The top in his field. Totally comfortable in his skin. Self confident with humility. Not a shred of arrogance. Forget the grade. Take him
He taught me how to write and more about the actual practice of law than all my other courses combined. I went to the ceremony when he won this big award and learned that he is the country's leading expert witness. . Somehow not surprising. It was wonderful to see the outpouring of love and respect from the icons who testified. NYU wants him.
If u want to learn to write this is the seminar. Redline edits on every draft with suggestions on active v passive, subject verb agreement, topic sentences, dangling participles, that v which, affect v effect, nonspecific referents, misplaced modifiers, then v than, fewer v less, comma splice, organization etc. Always supportive and kind.
Professor Pomp's tax courses were the most helpful to my development as a student in law school. His feedback and willingness to mentor students are unmatched. His courses are a must-take, even for those with interests in areas other than tax. UConn is extremely lucky to have him.
I got my first paper back and cried. Every line track changes and a comment. I went in to see him and he took out his first memo in law school and it looked like mine. then he showed me all his rejection letters through the years and I laughed, relaxed, and we went over my draft line by line. My first memo at work I was told the best of everyone
It takes little time on campus to learn about a special professor with a reputation that genuinely precedes him. So, despite no prior interest in tax, the decision to take Pomp was easy. Being "Pomped" means being subjected to rigorous coursework, but it comes with the recognition and excitement of learning from one of the foremost tax authorities.
We alums in NYC invited him to dinner. Our server, a beautiful actress b/n movies spilled soup on him. He told her not to worry, the pants were going to the cleaners anyway. The two of them bantered the whole night. When she gave him the bill and I snatched it to pay. Her number was attached. He told me to call her. Now we live together.
Pomp got me an interview with a Wall St. firm and I got the job. 1st UConn grad ever.. Tax partner and the client could not agree on strategy. They brought in P to resolve it. I was allowed to sit in. P went to the whiteboard and filled it with boxes, arrows and circles. Spoke with no notes. Merged the conflicting views. They stood and applauded.
Chill, funny, supportive, kind, paternalistic, perceptive advice on jobs, courses, covering letters, resumes. he has seen it all, he has done it all. white house, treasury, congress, cities, states foreign countries. everyone in the field knows him. he can pick up the phone and get you an interview. become his RA. he will get you into nyu LLM.
Really really bad. Rude and doesn't not show bias or favoritism for certain students.
Let's be real: a 9:00am Federal Income Tax class is not exactly *the funnest.* I took FIT with Pomp as a 1L, and he was always ready with a paper cup of coffee a multimedia presentation at hand. Tax isn't my thing, but Pomp is a good teacher and a fair grader. He is very open to meeting (usually remotely) for office hours and he knows his stuff.
Took the course last semester of my 3L and got Pomped. He got me into the NYU LLM, the holy grail, and I slayed the place. Better trained than the rest of my class. Got a job with a Wall St firm, the first UConn grad they ever hired. All the advice he gave in class about thriving in a firm paid off. I shined.I am the first choice for the deal team
I am a therapist in the eve program. To my chagrin, I kept putting tax off, even though my UConn patients and friends raved about Pomp. So in my last semester I experienced him. He is the most fully evolved, mature, sophisticated, worldly, funny, self-deprecating, down to earth, charming, and humble person I have ever met. No wonder he is the GOAT.
I am out five years and still remember all the pompisms. To wit, I was in a mediation and opposing counsel kept using all these metaphors. I remember Pomp's advice, metaphors are not a substitute for analysis. Look the person in the eye, keep a straight face, and say "I don't understand. What are you saying." Worked perfectly!!! No there there
I was a 1L last summer with a big wall street firm. They made me an offer for this summer, which I gladly accepted but they imposed one condition: that I took pomp last semester. I reluctantly did and it was transformative. The first assignment this summer had a major tax issue which i deftly handled. My colleagues never took tax at better schools
I heard abt this site at the reunion. Other than gray hair he looks the same. I never told him how much he meant to me. My wife said do it. We walkd to his office. 2 quill pens from the NY Gov recognizing hs tax reform work. NY Times op ed extolling Pomp. I told him how he changed my life, made me a better person and lawyer. Tears in his eyes
I did not want to take tax. Everyone from my summer employers to my parents to other UConn Profs told me I had to experience pomp. Reluctantly I did and then got pomped. I am now a 5yr associate at an AmLaw 50 firm and most everything i touch has a tax issue buried in it. That's life in the majors. Maybe it would be different in a suburban firm.
I was an undergrad at Wharton awhile ago. Pomp should be there. Brilliant. He cuts through all the white noise and gets to the heart of even the most difficult material. l completely understand why he is the "go to" expert witness. Humble, self deprecating and hysterical with that dry sophisticated humor. UConn is so lucky to have kept him.
