Notes are a little hard to take b/c he doesnt have power point-you write as he speaks and tests are kinda tough.. one major project (for neurobiology) that covers a lot of the material. you don't need the book at all so dont waste $$
Very hard tests!! no powerpoints you have to write what he says. if you do bad on more than two tests there is no hope to pass.

If you are a bad note-taker, or a bad (essay/short answer) test taker....DONT TAKE HIS CLASS! He trys to help you understand, but I found it pointless. He gives you NO notes, everything you write is what you catch as he rambles on. He is a very fast talker and its hard to keep up with what he is saying. Dont need to buy the text book for BIO 140!!!
He's a really great teacher, I hardly have to study for the tests at all, since he explains everything so well and repeats it over and over again. You don't have to come to class, but you really should, since everything from your notes will definitely be on the tests. Learn your notes by heart and the tests are no problem.
Amazing Teacher. Explains everything clearly and without confusion. All notes are taken by hand, no powerpoint, so that can be good/bad. Uses a lot of graphs and pictures. If you attend class and take notes, easy A. No HW or need for Book
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! EXTREMELY HARD! If you can't Draw out pictures or memorize graphs this class is NOT for you. If your the average person this is a class i'd stay away from. His test are all essays and draw out the process. VERY HARD!
This class is extremely challenging. All of his classes are lectures, and he will keep you all class period. He doesn't post his notes online so if you miss a class it's up to you to get the notes from a classmate. His tests are pretty straightfoward from the study guide. He has review sessions and extra-credit opportunities. Overall, good teacher
GREAT PROFESSOR! If you are interested in physiology at all, then take this class. He made me passionate about the subject in only a semester. Hard tests but I still remember most of the material and I took the class 3 semesters ago
Awesome teacher! I took BIO 140 for basic studies, and it was great. Take the lab, it's easy and fun. He's really easy to talk to and he's interesting. take notes, tests come straight from them. GO TO CLASS, he gives "quizzes" that are just really an extra point sometimes. He has review sessions and extra credit available. great class!!
He is a great professor, made a lot of awkward jokes in class. Never gives homework but you need to keep up with studying your notes because he makes his tests based on the notes. Go to class! it's not mandatory but he gives extra credit "quizzes" and gives points to people who go. Tests were challenging. Made me really interested in physiology.
I really just want to sit with satterlie and talk and be friends. He seems nice and is funny. The class is not a joke and the lab is ridiculous but you will learn what you need to know without having to memorize a crazy amount of material. The tests are hard bc of the short answer section which he seems to really like.
Best teacher I have ever had at UNCW. He doesn't use a powerpoint which bothered some people, but I preferred it. He really cares about his students and wants them to understand. He even retaught material from cell biology that was confusing. If you have any questions he will definitely try to help you understand. Take him he's the best!
This is definitly a harder class, but most A&P's are. If you attend class everyday and study for the tests you're golden. If you don't you are not going to do well. He's an interesting guy that knows how to keep his students' attention. Plus, he gives out bonus points for attendance, even though it's not mandatory.
Not a class you can just get notes from a friend because you will have no idea what when on in class that day. Doesn't use PowerPoint so everyone pretty much writes down what is easiest for them to remember. If you go to class you'll be fine the only tests I did bad on was when I missed some classes. Definately keeps your attention, good teacher!!
I hate bio and took this to get a science credit/lab for UC. If you need lab credit TAKE IT. The lab material is easy, and we never stay 3 hrs. He is very helpful, laid back and very easy to ask for help. Attendance not required in lecture, but it is to pass the exams! He gives review sheets/sessions that are helpful. By far my favorite professor.
This prof. is unlike any other I’ve met, he’s amazing & down to earth. There is so much info to cover, & he breaks it down for you. He focuses on understanding, rather than memorizing. ATTEND CLASS! He’s very helpful, and gives you hints to everything (like quizzes). I don’t know how he could be more accommodating. If you want to learn, take him.
He is enthusiastic about this class and tries to make real life connections to help you understand it. Once you get past the first test the material is harder to understand and he spends less time putting notes on the board. You have to be a good note taker to get a good grade in this class. His tests are multi choice, short answer and essay.
Super nice guy and he loves teaching bio. He's very interested in helping students and held a review session before each test. His lectures can kind of turn into rants because he doesn't use a powerpoint so sometimes it's hard to know what is important information and what is random. Definitely attend class if you want a good grade.
He gives pop quizzes, but lets you use your notes most of the time. He can be rude at times. Although his tests weren't very hard, I did not enjoy his lectures. He would go into very in depth information and tell you you didn't need to know any of it. This made it very difficult to choose what to write down in my notes without getting confused.
I had high hopes for this class at the start, but he never wrote anything important down and so I had no idea how to take proper notes that would help me pass his tests. He stands at the front joking around with his typical smirk and I needed someone to help me understand the course material, not a buddy to joke around with. Will not take him again
Definitely not an easy class. He types notes as he goes which slows down the pace of the class, which is good, but it results in very unorganized notes- can't tell what goes under what heading and he sometimes doesn't write down things that are crucial and will be on the test. You need to go to class and study to do well.
This class was really hard. He typed notes as he went and would go all over the place and often I didn't know what I should write down. If you aren't a good note taker, do NOT take his class. He would also go into detail about info that we didn't even need to know. Overall, I did not enjoy his class.
Satterlie is a great professor. Cell biology is a very hard class but he breaks down the material so make it easier. His study guides have the same questions that you will see on the test. If you go to class and take good notes this class should be an easy B but with a little extra effort and reading the textbook you can easily get an A.
This class is by no means easy. Students looking to get into the SON, be aware that you will have to work extremely hard for an A. His tests are multiple choice AND free response. His teaching style is very unique and hard to follow. He seems too smart to be teaching a class that is supposed to be very general, meaning he goes too in depth.
BIO 201 is weed out class but he makes it come alive! I would recommend taking his class because he makes the material much more understandable when it gets intense like in the genetics section. Beware his exams are 70% essay questions so if you are not a good essay writer do not take this class. I loved this however because he gives partial credit
Nicest man in the world. If you're taking this class just for a biology credit, take something easier!! If you need this class, go for Satterlie. He is so helpful and makes the material as interesting as possible. The material is really difficult (for an english major) but the way he writes notes as the lecture goes makes a lot easier.
Hes so nice and funny and makes the lectures interesting. He uses lots of examples because he "wants you to learn the material, not memorize it." Sticks to the dates of exams on syllabus but that is the only structure he has. Doesn't use powerpoints and the syllabus doesn't tell what you are learning for the day so if you miss class you're screwed
Dr. Satterlie makes the material interesting, if you enjoy physiology you will enjoy his course. He jumps around and does not have a set plan in terms of curriculum but there are only three exams and the final. If you study you should be fine for the exams but attendance is a must in order to pass.
I love satterlie so much! I have him now for Anatomy & Physiology I and he is such a good teacher. He is very clear with his teaching method and as long as you go and take good notes, you can get an A, or at least a high B. He's also really funny too. You won't regret taking his class!!
Tests are only hard once you get to the essays. Has really lame jokes. Not a bad teacher, but if biology isn't your thing, it's hard.
This class was incredibly difficult for me- lots of topics, lots of information. I barely got but but not with a great grade. Tests are difficult but he gives helpful study guides. He's a great guy and very knowledgable but sometimes too smart for his own good- his answers to questions tended to be unclear to the common mind
Satterlie is a great and smart man, he loves his bio. Please go to S.I. sessions, you cannot expect a great grade doing minimum effort in such a hard class. Satterlie teaches well and the tests are easy if you know the material as well as you should. Just work in there and I promise a good grade will come of it!
talks a lot, his test are strictly lecture based but his lectures are unorganized. if you go to class and write down everything he says you will do fine on the exams
A genuine professor who wants to see you succeed. Attending class is necessary to pass--he doesn't take attendance, but his lectures are very detailed and fast-paced. Grades consist of online assignments and tests. Tests require plenty of studying and cannot be passed via cramming. He does review sessions before exams and is happy to clarify info.
Satterlie is a great biology teacher. His test are most open ended but the material is only on his notes not anything from the book. You really only have to buy the online access code because thats all he uses he book for. Take good notes and try to understand the material and put it into you own words because he hates textbook definition. Good luc
Honestly the hardest class I have ever taken, the lectures are long and confusing and tests require a lot of studying (as it covers a lot of material). Richard is really funny but is way too smart to be teaching a BIO201 class.
Satterlie is an amazing professor. He explains everything clearly and if you don't understand then you just have to speak up and he will go over it again in a different way until you understand it. Yes you have to do a lot of studying but all of the test material comes from his notes. He also gives study guides. He is more then willing to help.
As much as a sweet guy Dr. Satterlie is, his notes are very confusing (and his tests are lecture based). I find myself ALWAYS having to watch YouTube videos just to understand a certain concept because the notes he gives are kinda vague and all over the place. DO NOT skip his class - you will be confused and he gives pop quizzes for extra credit
Very long boring lectures. Other than that the tests cover a lot of material and require a lot of studying. However, he does give good study guides.
Satterlie is really a nice person, however his lectures are long and confusing. I had to use Khan Academy to teach my self a lot of the material as his notes did not cover it in the detail he wanted us to know. His tests are based off of lecture and go in depth. I suggest using outside resources in addition to his lectures.
Dr. Satterlie in general is a really nice guy. This, however, does not mean that he is a good professor. His lectures are scatter brained and beyond confusing. While the recommended book is helpful at times, I found that I really had to go online or to another student to figure out what he was talking about. Best advice: GO TO THE SI SESSIONS!
Professor Satterlie is so funny and interesting. He loves what he teaches and tries his best to teach his students. He is very focused on concept understanding rather than memorization so all of the exams are write out. Go to all the classes because he gives out free extra credit points for those in class. Also going to SI will help greatly.
so Mr. Satterlie was of my best teachers my first semester. The tests are exactly from lecture. As long as you study hard, go to class, do the online HW, it's easy. Final exam was incredibly easy (if you studied). He is a tough, but explicit grader, so write everything and anything you know about an essay question (act like your teaching it to him)
Satterlie is by far my favorite professor at UNCW. His lectures are not online and he does not teach from a power point, so you need to be in class. I did not miss a class and barely had to study for each test. He is such a fun guy and makes lecture pretty interesting. He is one of the smartest professors I've had so far.
Professor Satterlie is very obviously a genius and loves what he does. His teaching style is a little scattered, but if you pay a lot of attention in class and take notes it is very possible. For the tests, understand every single concept in depth and write everything out. If you are willing to work hard, an A is possible.
For Bio 201 Dr. Satterlie was a great professor but can be challenging. His lectures can be very long and boring: especially at 8am. Most of his exam content comes from the lectures. He also randomly gives super easy extra credit quizzes in class that you don't want to miss unless you can ace his exams. Would take him again but not first choice.
Great teacher if you pay attention. sit as close to the front as you can! Turn phone on silent, if it rings you are not allowed to stop it, you have to get up and dance until it stops. Four big tests and little homework,
Dr. Satterlie was a great teacher; he gives out 8 homework assignments but takes the highest 5. He's very good about simplifying the vast amount of material from the book, because there isnt enough time to teach it all in full detail. The extra credit quizzes are great and the test are mostly short answer with some multiple choice.
Attendance is very needed to pass his class. Get ready to study because everything on his tests are short answer and he grades harshly.
Dr. Satterlie is a man who truly loves teaching students. He wants you to succeed in the class, but you will have to carry your weight and then some to get an A in the class. The textbook is not necessary unless you will be taking 202 the next semester. GO TO ALL CLASSES. Yes it sucks that it's an 8 am, but you will thank yourself on exams.
Dr. Satterlie is overall a fair professor. He makes his tests straight from his lectures and emphasizes learning the concept over memorizing definitions. I haven't touched the textbook because he only expects a very simple understanding. He's a good professor overall.
Dr. Satterlie makes bio 201 not so bad. You're fooling yourself if you think it will be an easy class, because like any bio 201 it is a weeding out class. However, Satterlie cares deeply about his students and works hard to help you understand his notes. STUDY HIS NOTES. Test concepts come straight from them.
Dr. Satterlie is man who takes pride in his work and really does a good job at helping you understand concepts as opposed to memorizing them for brain dumps. He is absolutely hilarious and it is worth your time to go to class to hear his jokes which keep you focused on the material which can get very challenging if you fall behind so go to class!!!
Definitely would recommend Dr. Satterlie. Attendance is not mandatory but if you don't go, you won't get the notes and probably won't do well. He always gives random pop quizzes that count as extra credit so going to class is definitely in your best interest. The exams were mostly short answer, but if you do the study guide then the exam is easy
Satterlie knows his stuff and doesn't play games with the exams; everything on the exam is covered in class. If you go to class and study, you'll pass.
Satterlie is by far my favorite professor I have ever had. I also had him before for Bio 201 and was so excited when I heard he was teaching this class. He doesn't do powerpoints or post notes but writes down everything he says. If you go to class and pay attention, you'll do well on tests. He offers extra credit on days when not many people show
Great informative class
Must attend lectures even though they are not mandatory or else you will not pass his exams. what he goes over in class is exactly what is on each exam. first exam usually weighs less than the rest as he believes it's necessary to understand how exactly he grades his exams. he does make the information bearable and easy to understand too
He is a boring lecture person, but tries his best- he gives out study guides-DO THEM they are the exams.
satterlie cracks himself up with his cheesy jokes, but seriously he is a pretty good professor. Be ready to study though, its a lot of memorization. You HAVE to take good notes in class, and if you dont always go to class dont bother with this professor. Type your notes (he talks fast) then rewritting it in a notebook and DO THE STUDY GUIDES
Dr. Satterlie is an awesome professor; he tries to make the the lectures enjoyable with his sense of humor. The class has 3 tests and then the final. He gives a study guide for each of the tests and only puts material from his lectures onto the exam. So basically if you attend class and do the study guides, it's a pretty easy class then.
BIO 201 is a HARD class, but Dr. Satterlie was awesome! Its easy not to like professors in hard classes, but compared to other Bio teachers, he's probably the best. He types his lectures as he talks and his notes are clear... everything on the test will come from them. Tests are mostly short answer but if you do the study guide its not too bad.
BIO 201 will be a difficult class no matter which professor you take it with, but Dr. Satterlie is truly the best there is! Grade comes mostly from three non-cumulative exams and one cumulative final. Attendance isn't mandatory, but going to class is in your best interest; exam questions come straight from lecture. Do the study guides!
All of his tests come from his lectures which are SUPER scatter brained and often hard to follow or pay attention to. He loves to go on long rants he calls "cocktail party talk" about info you don't need for tests but that he uses to impress ppl. Tests are mostly short answer. SI made this class bearable. Gives out extra credit for attendance.
Dr. Satterlie is an amazing professor. Exams are short answer, but aren't too difficult if you do the study guide. Attendance is not mandatory, however I recommend going every day and getting the notes from the days you miss.
Very lecture heavy on boring material, but as a person is quite funny. Grading is pretty strict and tests are a mix of multiple choice and short answer. Lots of studying to do well, but overall a good teacher.
Do yourself a favor and DO NOT take Satterlie. He makes it WAY harder than what it should be, and the exams are awful. The exams have open ended questions and he grades ridiculously harsh on them. Almost failing his class because of his teaching.
He really focuses on you understanding concepts in order for you to not memorize them. You cannot just straight memorize for his exams. You have to tell the whole story. His note taking is different with him doing it usually on a word document with figures he pre-attached. I had him for 201 and nothing has changed since then. Great prof.
Definitely a hard class but very manageable. Follow the study guides he sends out and you will be fine!
If you skip class you will not pass. Come to class, you'll be fine. Everything on the exams are from the lectures. He's a very specific grader but if you do the study guides you'll be fine. He is funny and very caring.. even invited students to his home for Thanksgiving who didn't have anywhere else to go.
This was the hardest class I have taken to date. Before each test, I spent hours on Youtube trying to catch up on material that he just flew through in class. He goes through the material so fast and doesn't do a good job of connecting the dots between subjects and even his points. Tets are short answer, but he gives really easy quiz grades in cla
Attendance is not mandatory, however he does give out extra credit "pop quizzes" which aren't even quizzes they are free extra points. His lectures are super heavy and can be really boring, but it's bio so... He used the online connect assignments which were easy grade boosters and helped prepare for tests. Highly recommend attending SI sessions.
Hard class but Satterlie is a very genuine professor who tries to help his students. He's quirky and that makes him likeable. Honestly the only downside is that the lecture is VERY MATERIAL HEAVY and he does not really connect the dots between topics and kind of explains things in a way that doesn't really make sense, so S.I will save your life.
Dr. Satterlie definitely tries to make lectures interesting and clearly cares about his students as well as the subject. The class itself is just so full of material that if you come in without an already decent understanding of the subject, it is hard to make connections between topics. With this in mind, it is a bit difficult to follow lectures.
He was a pretty good professor for bio 201, but that is just a HARD course. He explains things fairly well and is friendly. The tests are all short response, no multiple choice. This makes it tough and you must know EVERYTHING. Hes a good choice for the class, but be prepared to study a ton
Dr Satterlie is a great professor, attendance is not mandatory but if you do not go you will not do your best (take it from me) he does give pop attendance questions which aren't even quizzes just free points. ALL of his exams are short answer and some multiple choice, its nice because you get feedback and you really learn the material, just STUDY
Dr. Richard Satterlie is an amazing professor. His exams are multiple choice and short answer. They are challenging but as long as you study and attend lectures then you should be good. There is no new material on the exams either. He also gives out study guides a week before the exam. He gives out simple pop quizzes that turn into extra credit.
Dr. Satterlie is the BEST Professor that I have had. He is very caring and is very passionate about the subject. However, the class he teaches is largely a weed out class for bio majors, so you must put in the work to succeed. I believe his negative reviews are those who have no inclination or desire to study and do well in their classes.
His lectures are very entertaining and he cares about his students a lot. The topic it self is hard and sometimes he isn't the best at explaining things, however he gives out study guides for every test and it is basically the whole test. Super cool guy tho
Pretty cool guy, just a tough class.
Most of his lectures heavily depend on his side comments and not actually what he writes down.
Professor Satterlie was a great professor and made Biology bearable. The content in Biology is obviously challenging, but he really helps you understand the concepts to prepare you for tests. If you go to the lectures and take notes, youll pass the class.
Biology is a hard subject period but Professor Satterlie truly cares about his students, he really wants the best for them, and is really understanding. As long as you take good notes and listen to the lectures you will do very well in the class. He teaches the material VERY well and provides useful study guides for all tests. I recommend him!!!!
