Great all around
Doesn't teach. Shows you cool stuff in lecture but tests on stuff he doesnt even talk about in lecture.
Great prof. not so great test maker:(
really cool prof, i enjoyed the teaching style...tests were pretty challenging though
Fun lectures. Exams are reasonable, but study notes well. Go to office hours and you may get some good tips on what to study for exams.
This guy is awesome, best teacher i've encountered at Berkeley. Has awesome demos (blows stuff up a MINIMUM of one time per lecture) and explains the actual material fairly well also.
Best professor I've had so far in UCB
wow..difficult exams...make sure you READ THE BOOK... cool lectures though, lots of explosions
wears hawaian shirts every day. Good lecturer. Really bad test maker. Explosions. Bad, hard tests...
He makes really hard tests and you have to go to lecture. He doesn't always test you on the book. He likes very theatrical, i'm not quite sure about his teaching abilities. He likes to throw out a lot of stuff at once; it doesn't mean he'll explain it all.
Great! Interesting and care about students
Very animated professor, fun to watch in lecture. His abundance of personality and charm make morning lectures remarkably easy to sit through, even exciting. APPROACHABLE; makes it a point to learn students' names that attend his office hours. Really cares about his students. Challenging tests.
saykally rocks! loves exploding things almost as much as you enjoy watching things explode. between the explosions, the brightly colored hawiian shirts, and the animated teaching style, saykally's class is definitely entertaning.tests are on the hard side but he makes the material fun.
Fun, enjoyable and clear lectures. Very cool guy. Tests are fair.
He is interesting and entertaining. He also goes a little crazy with the demos and usually has an explosive substance ready for the class to enjoy.
AWESOME-ness. His love and enthusiasm for teaching is apparent and almost contagious. I truly enjoyed attending his lectures. (The many demos didn't hurt either!)
LOVED him and his wardrobe
Awesome prof. Lectures are intense/interesting experiences - he ties real world into chem. Even w/ class size 1k+ he's totally approachable in office hours. He took entire class out to lunch in grps of 25+ to get to know us!!!
Always managed to be out of town prior to exams, thus avoiding office hours (at least back in Sp. '96). Assigned the same research paper topic to 200+ students, creating a shortfall of sources. Good move.
He was a really good teacher... i enjoyed his lectures and he explained things well. you have to read and make sure you kno the key ideas of each chapter. keep up with the reading and hw and you'll be fine. oh yea and he has really cool demo's...just be
No Comments
doesn't cover hw material, which makes things difficult
unhelpful and hard exams not straightforward or from the book. Spends more time on trips and appearing at elementary schools than taking time to care about his students. Also, looks too much like Hugh Heffner.
Saykally is awesome. Gotta love the chili pepper shirt.
Really cool guy, easy to listen to but to many examples and not enough teaching of concepts.
A few people might benefit from Saykally's lectures but mostly you have to learn everything from the labs and the textbook anyway; it wasn't long before half our class stopped coming.
IT is a always an exciting lecture, careful in the front.
he tries very hard to make his lectures interesting with demonstrations and obnoxiously bad clothes. as for the content itself, most of the material you have to learn on your own and the lecture is basically ancillary material because he only goes over the basics in class.
Really fun class! Saykally explains fundamentals well and does a lot of example problems that are indicative of what will be on the midterms. Great personality, exciting explosions, applies chemistry to the real world, makes for an enjoyable class.
Great Professor; he knows how to keep us entertained
An entertaining professor who keeps the attention of the class while demonstrating some important concepts. Excellent overall. To get a good grade, just do your work--the reason people have trouble is because they slack off in the transition to college.
Funny guy with good demonstrations. His examples are helpful for the homework and stuff so use that to your advantage.
Chem 1A is a hard course, but Saykally is a great prof. He is fun, funny, interesting, and does great demonstrations (ie singing, blowing things up with regularity) which all serve to make the class period fly by. The tests, though, are HARD, as is the work load, and lab can be extremely boring. But Saykally is awesome! Such a cute older man!
Saykally is a really good professor. He's funny and likes to put music on. Great demonstrations, unfortunately some got banned by the dean. The class is requires you to study and know the material. Exams are moderately hard. He is a good choice for a professor.
this guy is the best professor in the worldd!! such a funny guy and gives fair tests. great teacher!
Good professor to start but then he went on a month long vacation right before a midterm. After that I just went to Kubinec's lecture til the end of the semester. Take Kubinec if you can, but Saykally's all right, too.
Saykally is more personal than Kubinec. Avail for office hours, very nice, and really cares, he really does. tests are all the same for chem 1a, they are hard, this class is hard, arguably the most difficult class at cal, arguably the most difficult chemistry class in the USA. consider that, it is a very tough class. Saykally is great.
very good teacher and very clear...only bad thing was that he had to go on like a 3 wk lecture tour during classes
Although the class is extremely difficult, Saykally made up for it. Lecture was always very entertaining, and he really cares about each student.
Saykally is an amusing lecturer, but lectures usually consisted of too many demos. The tests covered different material from the lectures so a lot of individual work and reading was required for the class. He's a good prof however & cares about his students and he likes to write on the blackboard.
very good professor. his explanations made sense and he had cool demos too! exams are hard and really tests knowledge of chem concepts.
Saykally is awesome! His lectures were helpful and explained things in a different way then the text. The tests were based off the lecture, but reading was also helpful. His tests were not very difficult, especially if you have a strong background in chemistry.
nice guy, entertaining. lectures were very interesting and engaging. tests are somewhat difficult (second midterm especially). just make sure to understand how to do everything in the homework and you'll do fine. it's also helpful to go to the SLC and office hours.
he was such a fun professor-- loved his demos, one of those professors who makes you realize it's not really about the grades, but really about learning the material
Great professor, very fun and entertaining. Demos are exciting and fun to watch. Occasionally mentions terms that are unrelated to lecture and unexplained. Exams are easy, final was extremely easy. Overall a good experience, try to get him for 1A!
He probably ranks as my second favorite professor at Berkeley (#1 is Alex Filippenko). He's a fun guy and always has cool demos. He also explains things well and writes everything out on the board. However, I found that towards the end of the class (quantam mechanics), his lectures became obtuse, so I watched Kubinec's lectures instead.
He's got a sense of humor, does great demos, and obviously enjoys teaching. He made me want to come to learn and come to lectures. Tests and assignments are about average difficulty. Overall, he's best professor I've had so far at Berkeley.
Weird class. He tried to get us interested in studying crystals by saying that they would improve our sex life. The material is very simple, but he likes to add random tangents. Textbook is awful! Office hours are useless because he just talks about his kids. Overall, he is a really good guy, though.
Fun guy, fun class. Saykally gives interesting lectures and tries to incorporate recent advances in chemistry into the course material. As lower division science courses go, this one isn't too hard. Tests are usually fair.
Grades very fairly, midterms are easy, final is hard. Interesting lectures, likes to blow stuff up
Good, interesting lecturer. Included lots of information about modern scientific applications. He also blew things up a lot. First 3 mid-terms weren't hard and followed his practice tests closely. However, his final was very difficult. Tip: facts in lecture that don't seem important (e.g. the entire C-N-O cycle, energy use statistics) will show up!
The best teacher out of three for the Fall 07 semester of Chem 4A. He knew his stuff, explained everything clearly, and made the class fun and engaging. I actually looked forward to going to this class everyday. Oh, and he likes to do fun demos.
Best professor for fall 07 4A. Engaging lectures with good presentation, at least one demo per class on average, manageable workload and a positive attitude. He has a lot of personality (although at times it can get a little irritating) and makes extra sure we get the core concepts.
I thought everybody was joking when they said he blows something up everyday but he quite literally does blow something up every day. Lecture is like a show for him and they're always entertaining and informative. He even plays music, pokes fun at other profs and is just generally awesome. I would recommend him to anyone; take one of his classes!
I failed this class, but I still liked it. This professor is a great person, and his lectures are clear, but he has a tendency to like to blow things up. Literally. He's great fun though, so you'll definitely be on your toes in his class.
His lectures cover only the bare basics of what you really need to know, but he's more helpful in office hours. Also, explosions are lovely.
Wonderful teacher. Lectures are interesting because he keeps the class involved and blows stuff up a lot. Easy to predict what will be on tests. Easier class than expected.
Competent, interesting, and had a good sense of humor. However, he placed too much of an emphasis on blowing things up which was interesting but not helpful. He was also too heavy on example problems, and did not discuss concepts enough. But ok overall. 7/10
Saykally is a pretty fun guy. Loads of demos, but a pretty harsh grader. Didn't learn much in this class.
Saykally's an enthusiastic professor who made class really interesting, not to mention his explosive demos at every lecture. His midterms were tough and he was a harsh grader, but good professor
Explosions are fun but you have to read the book if you wish to do well. Lectures are interesting but are not always relevant to what is going to be on the exam.
His lectures are extremely confusing. He doesn't really teach the concepts; instead, he just goes over chemistry problems during lecture. He blows things up pretty much every class, so that was exciting. But be prepared for harsh grading/hard midterms.
He's a nice guy but he doesn't teach at all during lectures. He only blows up stuff in class and laughs about it. He goes on about irrelevant things for the first half hour of the class and he does an explosion in about 15 minutes and in the last ten minutes he'll attempt to go over material but fails every time. I would recommend to avoid him.
Up to the first midterm, he will be your favorite professor with lots of explosions and fun. Then after that, you will realize he's actually pretty bad at teaching, especially when you get into more complicated topics. The midterm 2 average was an F and by the third midterm over 50 people did not take the exam. I could only learn from the saplings.
Practically used my textbook to teach myself.
Saykally is literally the worst professor that I've ever had. He spends all of the class time doing demonstrations or talking about irrelevant things and when he tries to actually teach something, it's impossible to follow. The tests are impossibly hard and the grading is unforgiving. I personally don't think that he cares about his students at all
I stopped attending lecture after the first midterm, as it was pointless to go. Lot of demos and wasting time. The material is not too bad, but be prepared to teach yourself. GSIs for this class are a pain in the ass and made it significantly less enjoyable. Hated the way the class was all calculation-based and conceptual learning was ignored.
Doesn't teach the material and is more excited for blowing things up in class. I stopped attending lecture and discussion after the first midterm because it was just all useless. I had to self-teach the entire semester and rely on sapling. The exams are nowhere near sapling difficulty too. Avoid this professor esp if you're taking lower division.
Cannot get any worse. Does not teach concepts well, if at all, in class. I stopped attending lectures. Basically a self-taught class. Despite being in the standard deviation of all midterms and getting an average for the final, still received a D. He barely curves midterms and just "lowered cutoffs" which barely did anything for anyone. Terrible.
This professor is not helpful at all. You go to his lectures expecting to learn, only to find that all he does the entire time is demonstrations and really lacks the focus and clarity to explain the tough concepts of the course. Was not happy with this professor or my outcome in the class.
Overall I enjoyed my time in Professor Saykally's class. He expected that you do the reading prior to lecture, overall making lecture and enjoyable experience. My only complaint was that he didn't do a very good explaining hybridization in the quantum section, something that was a large portion of our final. Manageable class if you put in the time.
He loves to blow up stuff-which is the most entertaining part& what I look forward to. You definitely CANNOT rely on his lectures/hw for studying, you MUST get outside help--study group, disc, tutor, GSI OH etc. A lot of people don't even show up to class b/c he is "useless" which for the most part is true, but still go anyways. READ THE TEXTBOOK!!
I would say never go to class because all he does is do demos or talk about the most pointless things, BUT GO TO CLASS because he does drop hella hints at what's going to be on the midterm. Pay attention when he does blackboard problems or says "This is a good test question". Get ready to teach yourself. Lectures are impossible to follow.
Awesome lectures. Must read prior to class - he doesn't regurgitate text material. Brings examples from life around you into the lectures - makes what otherwise is dry material actually interesting.
I know people say that he is a harsh grader, but his lectures are really fun and interesting. He does a lot of problems on the blackboard in class-make sure you understand how to work out those problems. And do all the homework. The midterms are all based on those problems. Study and you'll be fine.
Does not explain anything clearly. All he did was spend 90% of the time blowing things up and 10% talking about pop culture music. Awful professor. Avoid if you can.
Saykally would spend most of the lectures going over slides and performing explosions. Reading the book is a must! He was helpful in office hours and also told us about his personal life. Saykally expects you to work hard. He chooses questions from his lecture and homework for the tests. Overall, an interesting Professor and class.
He's just not a good professor. Everyone in class is talking about it. I learn everything outside of class because he's to busy trying to be cool.
Professor, You're not all bad, but here are some suggestions: -asks GSI's to make slides more clear and organized -clarify whether section is mandatory and if quizzes count towards grade(they aren't on the grade breakdown) -speak more clearly. we're beginners. less explosions as hilarious as it is -embrace compassion (no chasing students)
He is cool person, but not a good teacher. The lecture is not really well organized, because he doesn't really go into details or build connections with previous knowledge. One thing I personally don't like is that he walks a lot while speaking. Trying to find connections among topics is already tough in his lecture, and his walking makes it worse.
i think he is a nice guy but he really fails as a professor. I have no science background so it was hard for me to follow but he made it even harder: lectures do not explain anything and practice midterms are full of mistakes, his section has the lowest gpa of all sections over the last few years and he simply changed the grade policy duringsemester
Prof. Saykally has a great personality and presence, which make his lectures entertaining. However, he doesn't do a great job of presenting the material in a way that is easy to understand. His midterms were long but fair, with reasonable averages. The final was definitely out of left field, but it was curved to bring up the average.
This guy is literally impossible to follow when he's actually teaching. He doesn't finish half the problems he's demonstrating and spends the rest of the time performing "demonstrations." Highly recommend you take the course with another professor.
Saykally really isn't as bad as everyone made him out to be. If you go to his lectures he spends about half the time blowing things up, but if you actually read the texts before his lectures and pay attention to what he's writing/saying, you'd do okay. He posts practice tests that were representative of actual tests and curves the class nicely!
Tests were incredibly difficult (averages in the 40s) and lectures were essentially useless. I attended both lectures every day and still was unable to grasp most concepts on the midterms. Scope out a good GSI to get help and ride the curve.
In a 50 minute class, the first 10 minutes you learn "Berkeley culture", the next 20 minutes you learn about his daughters, then for 5 minutes you go over what ever comes to his mind. So that leaves what, 15 minutes to go over the labs. The lectures are 100% useless, and it is obvious he does not care about teaching. Disliked by all students.
Lab is supposed to be somewhat of a grade booster with the university average being an A- for all lower div Chem lab sections. Only 1AL prof to not curve, gave you your raw grade. Didn't have clear grading criteria, but really emphasized accuracy in an intro Gen Chem lab that used inaccurate measuring instruments and procedures.
Saykally makes lectures lively and is a hilarious dude. I've actually never fallen asleep in his lectures (sometimes because of the explosions) but mainly because he doesn't just drone on and on in monotone with his presentations. Although I admit he doesn't go really in-depth into concepts and calculations, the GSIs make up for it.
I don't believe Saykally cares about teaching. His lectures taught little, featured many digressions, and were unimaginative. He seems to lack the fundamental teaching skill of considering what your students know and what you must tell them in order for them to understand what you're teaching. He sort of just talks. It really hurt my love of chem.
Saykally is a very caring professor outside of class , like in his office hours. However, lecture for him is just a giant show. He makes it a spectacle instead of actually teaching.
Saykally is one of the best professors I have ever had. He makes you feel excited about Chemistry, his exuberance and easy-going style made me want to come to class. His asides, chemistry-related or not, were always interesting and relevant. He's a shining light to all teachers and I have the utmost respect for him.
A really good professor makes the usual harsh teaching styles of Berkeley so much livelier and happier :)
A really fun professor, I learned a lot:)
Taught the first half of my Chem4B lecture. I attended all the lectures but didn't get much out of it. The textbook and GSI office hours are helpful, as well as putting effort into the weekly homework. Saykally is... ok. You won't love or hate class, and you can definitely get through it with a reasonable amount of work but it's not life-changing.
Seems like fun professor at first, but as course progresses, his inability to teach shows. Goes off-topic frequently, wastes 10+ mins at start of each class, and always fails to keep class engaged. Makes many mistakes and tells you to just "read the book." Exams mostly calculations, but some questions are unfair (coming from someone who got an A.)
Such a great professor learned so much and prepared me so well for exams. Especially midterm 2. I hope he can be my professor for the rest of my life!
I had the honor of taking two courses taught by Richard J Saykally (4A, 4B). He is a wonderful lecturer. Every explosion was a masterpiece that kept the students on their toes. His lectures on quantum physics for Molecular Orbital Theory were literally the best lectures I have ever had. It made the second midterm of Chem 4A extraordinarily easy.
The worst
literally have no idea what is happening during lecture because all he does is talk about the snow outside of his cabin and to read the book... how does he talk about something so offtopic for a majority of the class??? he said the lectures only supplement our learning but literally have not learned anything other than that this class is not it...
His lectures consisted of world news, constantly going off on tangents about the weather and holidays, and other irrelevant things to the course. Did not attend any of his lectures and opted to read the textbook during that time. When I went back to watch his recordings, he barely covered any relevant material, and his powerpoints were messy.
Here's the thing. Saykally does not care if is students succeed or not. After taking Chem 4A with him, he came back the next semester for 4B and said "I saw the course reviews, I heard you guys didn't like me, well guess what... I'm here for another semester and I'm not changing a thing!!!" Teaching aside, that's just malicious.
Worst prof I've had so far. Almost caused me to switch out of college of chem. His lectures barely had any actual information and his exams were always way too long to finish on time.
Saykally doesn't want to see if you understand chemistry on the exams, he just wants to see if you can make it through an obstacle course of poorly worded questions without getting confused. I learned less chemistry from the portion of the class that he taught than I learned in any other chem class.
Hes tough, harsh, and very stubborn, but undoubtedly brilliant. I had a terrible experience over zoom, but I think hed be much better in person.
Professor Saykally's lectures were often off-topic, so you need to read the textbook and do problems outside of the ones that he assigns.
He almost made me switch out of college of chemistry because I hated his lectures so much. He clearly doesn't care about teaching anymore and doesn't care how much the students complain. He frequently made mistakes on his exams and rarely taught actual content in lectures, rather just told us to read the textbook ourselves.
