If you like to think beyond the surface, his classes are for you. Otherwise, you can pass with a C and be entertained by his lectures all semester long.
Amusing lectures but questions aren't answered directly. A great amount of thinking and evaluating is involved. Multiple choice quizzes and midterms w/ daily journal.

His class is very interesting. You will learn a lot about how to think carefully and clearly. His grading is not easy though. Quizzes are unannounced, need to go to class everyday. Quiz and tests are true/false questions. If you want to learn, take him
He is a nice, interesting teacher. T/F Quizes and Exams.
Knows his philosophy but bad as a teacher. A Quiz a week , 2 big exams, and a paper that is a BIG part of your grade and you're expected to know how to write a philosophy paper.
I took all of his classes for a reason. He's one of the best teachers I ever had. I took intro, critical thinking and one other. Classes/work/papers are very challenging. If you're not up for the work, don't bother. He is a better prof. to those who love to learn, especially philosophy. Highly Recom
I thought the things he taught was interesting. ALthough hard, but interesting. He was pretty straight forward.
He's a really passionate & interesting teacher. He can be a bit intimidating & if a lot of work scares you off, don't take his classes. He can take a little getting used to, but when you do he's a really good compassionate teacher. I'm taking another of his classes for a reason!
I TOOK AN INTRO TO PHILOSOPHY CLASS WITH HIM. HE WAS VERY PATIENT, AND INTRODUCED SOPHISTICATED TOPICS WITH EASE. HE IS FUNNY WITH HIS KARATE MOVES AND OTHER "CATCH YOU BY SURPRISE" MOVES. HE IS CONCERNED WITH YOU UNDERSTANDING IN THE BIG PICTURE BUT YOU HAVE TO MEET HIM HALF WAY. COOL TEACHER
He is very challenging but he is very much available for help. I can tell he really wants his students to learn something and succeed.
He's a Professor, with a passion for the education of his students. May intimidate and seem unapproachable. May be too demanding for some students, though it's all for the students benefit. He truly cares. One of his stated goals is to "prepare" you at the UC transfer level, and be sure he'll do his part. You just have to do yours. "Get educated."
Very cool teacher, very interesting, but the one problem is the test/quizes are very hard. I have an average vocabulary, and his vocab is way beyond what i've learned so far in college. Quizes wouldn't be hard if it weren't for words i've never read before. Class is very fun though, and you learn a lot.
His class opened my eyes to a new way of thinking. His teaching style motivated me to succeed. He cares about his students' success and will try very hard to help you if you are struggling. His advanced vocabulary motivated me to improve my own. As a student who has never taken a philosophy class, this class was a little overwhelming, but worth it.
do not take him. His lecture is hard to follow. t/f tests.
Schubert is very passionate about what he does. He has a genuine interest in the education of his students, but will not coddle them. The work wasn't particularly difficult but there was quite a bit to remember and you HAVE to do the homework or you will be lost. Also, don't be late to class.
Awesome - will prepare you for transfer - in a league with Newman, Patching, Jones, and others who are actually scholars and care about students and teach transfer education. He's not for flakes. And he'll not waste your time.
Hes prob The best teacher Ive had. He sincerely cares about the edu of his students, its not just a “a living” for him. He is almost superhumanly clear, he goes to dramatic levels to hold his students attention, hes easy to approach, he works with students individually as well as together, & hes extremely knowledgeable & passionate about philosophy
he's an interesting teacher that doesnt bore you...but get ready for alot of work!!not easy
great at keeping your attention
very interesting personality. keeps you awake in the morning, hard to follow, but you have to keep up. overall good teacher.
Great teacher. Just challenging
He gave a lot of examples during class to help you understand, but the philosopy stuff is not easy to understand~ but I recommend you to take his class~
He's amusing. And that's pretty much it.
he is hard to pass, but a good teacher. be ready to work
the schubster is a good professor. he is interesting yet overrated. he's very rehearsed. he makes u want to think.
IF YOU WANT TO GET A D OR LOWER, DO NOT PICK THIS PROFESSOR!!!!!
Very educated, knows his stuff. He makes you work, but he also makes it interesting. If you're transferring to a UC, take him, you will learn a lot and he'll prepare you. Seems intimidating, but he's very helpful, stop by his office hours if you need to. Best professor I've had.
He's very engaging. A very interesting teacher. He keeps you entertained. The journal thing is a tad on the hard side to keep up, but other than that, the class as a whole was great.
schubuster is very helpful and wants you to learn but very very very very hard material and he talks in this authentic form of standard english which becomes incredibly hard to understand...cuts no slackkkk ...he is an asssss sometimes...but over very educational classs and good for a humans future.
he's is a hard...no slack teacher...dont take him....recommend taking another teacher
In my six years of college (most spent in a University), I came across many brilliant professors. Rick is one of the two smartest men I have ever studied under. His brain is greased. His synapses fire thirty times faster than the normal human's.
Schubert is a man apart. Extremely knowledgeable on the class material and lots of other things as well. He's a real thinking man's man. A real friendly guy too. Office hours were always a pleasure. His class was tough for me to pass, but I took more away from his class with a D than other classes that I simply skated thru with an A.
Schubert is a Lizard Alien. He's brilliant. Take him and educate yourself. Not for slack ass halfwits who think they can skate by and come out with a passing grade. Participate, ask questions, flash cards are a plus, as are lots of notes. Do the reading. Go to his office and talk to him. The nicest most approachable prof at CRC, but the hardest.
He is a very professor. If you plan to take this class, you shouldn;t take anymore than 9 total units. He will give pop quizzes that are extremely difficult. Even though he teaching ablity is good, he thinks like he is teaching a group of philosphers, not intro students.
Changed my life.
Dr Schubert doesn't play, slackers need not apply. Only people who are serious about learning can expect a decent grade. The good Dr will fail you without any remorse if you cheat and or plagerize , be honest and study hard and youll do fine.
A UC Davis Professor. SO he is Very Hard. Unless you are really smart don't take this class. You will fail
very hard class. take some other teacher. trust me
make sure you absorb as much info as you can cus he makes you write a an essay towards the end of the semester and its not just any paper, its an essay that will make or break your grade for this class. i've passed all my eng classes with an A and i received a "d" on his paper. good luck if you decide to take on this challenge
Was very helpfull, but was a little criticle of mistakes.
schubert is one of the best professors at crc. extremely helpful and is funny too. get educated, take schubert's class.
Don’t Not Take Him unless you want to fail. The mannerism, in which he speaks to you or in class, is as if he’s talking down to you. He’s Hard to follow!!! Always done a class survey of True and False question, to build class opinion; however, in the end its about what his opinion.
He's highly educated and thus makes him a lil' pompous. He's a big ass sometimes because he hates wrong answers and doesn't sweet talk anything. I've been on the receiving end of his rants about how stupid we act (he says it more nicely of course) and if you're one of those people that can't take things without exploding, don't take this class.
extremely hard. dont take him. you'll regret it. he helps to extreme measures. but he himself is wayyyyyy to difficult
I have to admit myself Dr. Schubert is a very tough teacher. He is very approachable and will help u if need help. But he is very hard to understand and absorb.(the material is too complex) If you plan on transfering to a unversity and love or somewhat love philosphy..take him..u will learn alot!...if u don't...don't take him..
Very smart man, but expects too much from students. Great professor for a higher level college. If you take his class you need try your hardest to succeed. For students who want to be challenged he is a great teacher, very helpful.
This prof. has a Ph. D in phil. and is very knowledgeable. He is hilarious and keeps lecture interesting. The subject matter is difficult in itself and it is imperative that you show up to lecture and PAY ATTENTION...not an easy A so be prepared to work for your grade and be prepared for what you worked for because he will give it to you.
literally the single best professor in all of history. yes, difficult to get an A, but it doesnt matter because you will walk away from this class so much smarter than you were. if you get an A then you are fabulous. be prepared for quizzes, but dont fear the paper he helps. and he will always challenge what you say, but in a good way.
Pretty freakin awesome!
Schubert is a really great teacher. His lectures are really great and he allows everyone to understand his lecture. Through note-taking, reading the books, and studying outside of his class, a student can receive a successful grade in his class. I have learned a lot from the class ever since the first day and I recommend him as a teacher.
Absolutely the best class i've ever taken, intro to philosophy with professor schubert. He inspires his students to get the education they deserve and work hard doing so. This class was very helpful to my overall perspective of how college should be. I encourage everyone to take his class believe me the work is worth it.
He?s the type of professor to throw his chair in the middle of lecture to make his point. He?s fair but needs to tone it down. A little consideration for students learning would be nice. Throughout the whole time I felt like a guinea pig for his theoretical belief on how a student must learn reasoning. Screams one minute speaks softly the next, if
hes a really smart guy, but the style in which he talks made it hard for me to concentrate. as said before, soft....then LOUD....then soft again, then LOUD
dropped class 4 weeks after taking it.. he explains material well but doesn't mater because he quizzes on the readings (confusing material) before we talk about it as a class.. i cannot understand the readings (so i fail the quizzes) but he explains material well after the quiz (but that's to late now because i just failed the quiz!).. study hard!!
Great teacher, if you apply yourself to this class you will learn much more than just philosophy.
Probably the most brilliant man I've ever encountered in my life. His thought process is astonishing and even though I may not grasp everything in his class as easily as others, I feel extremely challenged and I love it. I'm in his Friday class right now, and Fridays are pretty terrible days for the material that's being taught. Purely amazing.
make sure you bring a scantron to the midterm or else you will not be able to take the exam. if you are unsure of the topic being discussed, do not say anything at all because he WILL make you look and feel stupid. he will randomly bang the table then talk on as if nothing happened. i regret taking phil300. its a waste of time
Schubert is a very intelligent man, he will make you reconsider how competent you really are. Dont take him if you are looking for an "easy" class. Critical thinking skills are VERY important and you can do good if you do ALL the hw and STUDY, maybe have a tutor. He is very helful but the material is difficult. Tests are difficult if u dont do hw!
Taking this class has been a wonderful experience. All the material covered is applied to our daily life. He is an excellent teacher, who unlike some people might think, actually cares about the students, and that's why he will be available during his office hours, and by appointment. In respect to easiness, it was an average college class.
Not a class to take for an easy A. Take this class if you have any interest in philosophy. He offers a lot of office hours if you are having trouble. Buying the textbook isn't necessary. Take a lot of specific notes. Weekly TF quizes are easy and straightforward if you do hw, but impossible if you don't. Same with midterm and final. Best class ever
I think he has both good and bad areas. He tries to make the lectures as interesting as possible, but the things he talks about are completely mind boggling. It's logic oriented to the extreme. He often rants out loud as if to say you're not as smart as you think you are. So he has an arrogant side. His class was extremely challenging.
You know a professor is good when you don't need the book. He's extremely smart and always appreciates what you have to say or ask.
Schubert is a very smart guy. HOWVER!!! However, he is extremely arrogant and egotistical. He tries to play it off by saying, "I'm not here to rub my PHD in your face" but then that is exactly what he does. He also likes to ram his personal politcal views down your throat (even though they are the same as mine) i dont need to hear him preach it
If you're an A student, think again before taking this class. It's hard to pass let alone get an A. Honest man. Arrogant and extremely smart. You wont meet anyone smarter, that's how smart he is and it's been two years since I took his class. You need to have a high/advance level of understanding of the English language or else you'll fail.
A freakishly intelligent man! Quite possibly the sharpest individual I have encountered in my Academic career. Certainly in the top five. I had a Bachelors degree and am now myself a teacher, but the lessons learned in this class were for the ages. I did not do well, but I recommend this class.
This definitley isn't a class to take if you want an easy A. The readings will take you about two hours and hey, thats ONLY if you UNDERSTAND the chapters. You have quizzes every week. The final is cummulative. You better be ready to spend HOURS outside of class if you want to even pass this class. He really cares about his students though
Schubert is awesome! Although I am only earning a C in the class, I'm glad I took it and I feel like I've learned a ton. Take him if you want to learn, but don't expect an easy A for any reason because you won't get one. Don't expect to be able to miss class because quizzes are based on lecture. Challenging but very fun class.
He is smart. He thinks students are not (my opinion). His Oversimplification of all philosophical theories reflects this. I personally am very literal and understanding, so I do not understand or need his analogies. You will do good if you drop all prior knowledge at the door and learn everything he has to say. He says he encourages thinking, th
I can care less about all things "philosophy" and after taking his class i still dont care for the subject. Schubert is extremely smart and if you try very hard you will get a good grade. I got a C, but the knowledge i learned from him cannot be graded. He is great hearted but lives in a world which is not acceptable for his stds.
Great ethics class. 90% lecture classes, 10% Socratic seminar-style discussions. He tends to talk more during lectures on classic texts and lets class lead on contemporary moral issues. Weekly quizzes of 10 TF questions. Office hours and individual appointments are available for help on material or essay. Definitely recommend taking his courses.
Its a tough class but its worth it. He actually loves what he teachs, which is rare and actually expects you to do the work he assigns which really prepares you for the UC and state colleges.
I didn't enjoy the class. I don't like how I didn't have a big textbook to refer back to for exams. He uses huge words when he just could have said it so the class can undersand and follow. Talks off topic some days. He's sometimes interesting but boring.Don't recommend class.
Most annoying teacher! thinks he knows everything, he works at CRC as a community college teacher come on youre not god.if you like sitting in a boring class and actually try to pass expect an F. I didnt learn anything from the class and its hard to pass.
The readings aren't necessary to pass the class. Easier than PHIL300 and 310; a lot of the material is stoner orientated. Attend class! Weekly TF quizzes, TF midterm and final, 95% on lecture, 5% reading. Take notes on the concepts, not the "facts," like if he talks about a chair for 20 min, write that down, he'll often quiz based on his weird ex.
schubert is a difficult teacher. he lectures the class to participate in classs discussion using reasoning but puts you down if you don't have the answer he wants. He'll tell you you're doing yourself a disservice if you "drag your carcass" into his class and not participate in the discussions. He doesn't care for polite students.
Professor Schubert is amazing. It's true that it won't be easy to attain an A but his teaching style is just so different. It's worth it to be in his class to hear what this guy has to say. Best class I've had
Dr. Schubert is very intimidating at the beginning of the semester. But don't let that scare you away! He is an excellent instructor and if you do your work and pay attention, you will walk away with knowledge that will really help you through life. If you like to slack off then this class is not for you.
Practical
Drop his class immediately if you accidentally enrolled in it. Really, you will be glad you did. Replace him with someone who isn't narcissistic and egotistical.
High chance of getting an F in this class no matter what you do. If you don't care about getting an F he has funny yet convoluted lectures for you.
Definitely agree with the label of "narcissistic and egotistical." Never met anyone who genuinely believes everything he says should be framed on the mantel or used as information in another textbook. All I can say is DO NOT take him, although I'm sure he is a great martial arts instructor (like he hasn't been beaten that to death.)
He very eccentric and tiny but he has this massive voice. If you didn't go over the reading your going to be lost. If you read you'll do fine. It is hard to pass the class. He is very understanding though. I barely passed the class but I have learned so much from this guy. He is really legit philisophy teach but it is hard class.
Super hard class, should've dropped the class earlier when I had the feeling he was a ****. Encourages participation, but makes harsh remarks if your not speaking at "Ph.D" level. It's an introduction to Philosophy course! 99 percent of the people in there don't want to be Ph.D philosophers.
Took HIS idea of a philosophy class - got an F. When to take another philosophy class with an actual professor - got an A.Just drop the class, he will waste your time and harass you the whole semester.
This is a very HARD class, but if you pay attention and ask questions and participate, it becomes easier. He's very clear from the start that he has high expectations. The term paper is hard to write so don't procrastinate! He's crazy but funny and is willing to help you when you need it. I ended up getting a B in his class.
A good Professor, but a turn-off to philosophy. Not very helpful either. I would steer clear of this class, otherwise attend class everyday, act engaged, use big words in your answers, and cite every sentence in your essays.
I have never had to withdraw from a class because of the professor. He thinks that if you don't get 8 hours of sleep, you are going to fail. We're college students...of course we don't get 8 hours a night. He's a know-it-all. I would stay away from his class unless you are a philosophy major.
I'm not sure why his easiness rating is so low because he probably one of the hardest teachers at CRC. You need more than effort to get by in his class. The reading is difficult (although there is no book) and there are frequent quizzes. He is very helpful if you go to his office hours. Overall, I would not recommend his class.
Probably was not a very good teacher to begin with, so got shoved off to CRC.Tries to make class incomprehensible and appear to be difficult so as to not get shoved off again. Would defiantly not recommend this class - he needs to look up the definition of a teacher.
He is a very misunderstood professor and probably needs to take some pointers from other professors at C.R.C. He just doesn't get it. I got stuck in this class because he was the last class open on the list (and now it makes sense why). Definitely drop/avoid this teacher.
Drop the I think I am smart act. Drop the dry humor. Learn to teach pal.
Basically I hoped I could stick it out so I didn't drop I wish I had I'm hoping for a C and I've been to everyclass and went to see him in office hours. He talks fast rarely repeats himself and doesn't write on the board much. He demeans and is very patronizing. Don't take his classes. I am walking away with a huge headache.
I honestly think that those who are trying to score brownie points with Schubert would actually welcome his hidden teaching methods. A student can not learn if the teacher is drowning the student in a pool full of demeaning comments. I don't see this person as an intelligible being at all but a crack in the art of teaching philosophy. : C
I agree with all the comments here. I can't believe I didn't drop this class earlier. Schubert does have a real problem with narcissism and does not care about teaching, rather attempting to promote himself.
Mr. Schubert made a major impact in my life, He gave me the reality check that i needed to succseed in college. Even though i hate Philosophy and i will never take it again unless i have to.....Shcubert taught me to work hard and be responsible for my education. Shcubert dosen't play, he is going to push you and you better be prepared.
You had better bring your *A* game for this class. It's tough but doable. Make sure to utalize office hours and emails, because at the end of the day when your lacking in your grade you will have no one to blame but yourself. Make sure you have your MLA & APA game down he will get you when it comes to plagiarizing.
Schubert is a very interesting teacher but can be hostile towards students at times. You can make the class work if you are willing to put ultimate effort into this class over all others. If not, Schubert's class isn't the one for you.
Most professors CRC focus on helping students learn the material in the most efficient and easiest way possible that conforms to everyone's needs...This professor is not one of those.
I'm currently a UCD student. Professor Schubert is one of the FEW CRC teachers that prepared me for school after community college. He is hard. He is direct. He cares a lot about students, and less about being liked. Take his class to learn, not for the grade--any other reason is a waste of time. I highly recommend him to all serious students.
One of the most highly educated professors I have encountered. Could almost always answer students' questions quickly and with clear, relevant examples. Also very funny and theatrical during lecture. Be sure to use the frequent quizzes he gives as study guides for midterms. I would definitely enjoy taking another one of his courses.
A good class. He expects a college level effort. Show up on time, read the material as many times as it takes to understand it, pay attention. Reasonable with discussions. He wants you to get the maximum amount out of your class.
I'm A-B student, I was very excited at first to be able to learn about Eastern Phil but upon entering his Introductory class, I found the professor to teach as if he was speaking to one of his colleagues & not very willing to explain the ideas & concepts behind it,which was very disappointing. I would not take his class again.
I thoght that Dr. Schubert was a fantastic teacher, very clear with his definitions, and was very open with his time, made himself easily available. Utilize his office hours, read and re-read the material and you will be alright. Very good class if you are going to school to actually learn. His grading standards are set pretty high, but worth it@
If your out of most of your other options for PHIL 300 or the equivalent I would recommend waiting a semester and taking with a different professor. He's a nice guy, just not very good at teaching.
Schubert is definetly a professor that wants to prepare his students and doesnt care about who likes him. He is a very educated man and speaks like one. He is also very humorous and an expert at making students feel uncomfortable whether that is his intention or not.
I would always doze off in his class, get tired and fall asleep. He gets off topic alot and give quizzes at least once a week. He's not really clear with instructions so I had to do a 20 page journal at the end of the semester. He is humorous form time to time.Definately would NOT RECOMMEND this professor.
Only take this class if you are serious about learning. If you are, you'll do fine and you'll have something epic to think about for the rest of whatever. Utilize office hours, ask questions, re-write notes, and keep on top of it from day one/ don't slack off. You get what you put in to it, simple as that.
Amazing Prof. If you want to transfer to a UC, take his class. if you do poorly, you should do yourself a favor and not transfer. He knows the material front and back and is able to answer questions that go outside the scope of the course. He's really funny too and is one of the few profs at crc that write research papers about their field.
Dr. Schubert is absolutely the best professor at CRC and, no, I’m not a Philosophy major. He is hard but, it is not impossible to get an A in his class. You do need to be able to read and write at the college level. Pay attention to the info given on the first day of class. It will tell you if you are ready to take a college level course.
Tough teacher that will prepare you for UC's. He's very patient and will try his best to understand your questions and will try to answer them and explain them. He is strict because he expects his students to be come to learn. Not an easy A but a great class nonetheless.
Has a big ego. Thinks he knows everything. Very demeaning. Acts like he's smart. Doesn't know how to teach. Goes off topic often. Doesn't use the text book. STAY AWAY FROM THIS CLASS. Don't enroll in it, drop it. I wish I dropped it sooner.
Definitely stay away from this prof. I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS PROF UNLESS YOU HAVE NO OTHER CHOICE. Made a huge mistake taking this course. He tries to help, but gets off topic a lot. Quizzes EVERY WEEK.20 page journal. He isn't clear with his instructions so I was basically screwed at the end. Didnt know we had one so I HAD TO Plagiarize and was..
You NEED to go to the lectures and office hours because the books are vague and not analytical. When in class or at the office, you need to contribute your own ideas and interpretations to receive his interpretations of the books. Even then, your ideas are not what he asks for on the journal assignments but rather a clarification of his.
One of the most down to Earth people I have had the pleasure of talking to. He really cares about what he does and is determined to help you understand the material. All you have to do is ask. Yes he gives lots of quizzes, but they are true or false...not difficult...Ask lots of questions because he answers them very well. Very good professor.
Prof Schubert is brilliant, but if your looking for something easy or afraid of learning or thinking then he is not a good fit for you. However, he is by far one of the best professors i have ever had. He truly and deeply wants students to learn and grow as educated individuals.
toughest professor yet. super hard to understand his lectures, does not seem like a intro class at all. and when you ask for help he is not very clear, although he knows his stuff he doesn't know how to teach it. everything is true or false statements and are very difficult. would not recommend!!!
Tough but fair. The first day he lets you know what he expects from you. Started school after years, my writing is not so good. He was really helpful on the essay. meet in office hrs. Likes to challenge students. No surprises in his class as far as the class material goes. Overall it was fun. Class is worth the money and time if you want to learn.
great class, the instructor is always genuinely interested in feedback! But this teacher does have a temper and is a harsh grader!
he kicked a kid out of class the first day because he was looking at his syllabus he kicked out of class, the kid said sorry then the professor threatened to call campus police, it was so out of line. i was going to file a complaint but trust me he's not even worth your time. but yea you have to have a warped sense of reality to think it was ok
I dropped this class after he made offensive comments about me in front of the class. He is very rude to his students. He spent 30 minutes talking about how this student was acting like a kindergartner when all she did was reach in her bag. His cussing every other sentence is also unprofessional. I do not recommend taking this at all.
I'm still enrolled in his class atm but as everyone has been saying he can be VERY harsh. The vibe he gives off is you can't talk or move without it being "childish" He has some good points like he does genuinely seem to want you to learn but at the same time he is down right scary. If you're sensitive don't take his class.
In my opinion i believe him to be the only professor at crc that expects you to learn at a college level. If you dont like knowledge or intellectual challenges then dont take this class but it will change your life.
He is a great professor who cares about your education and will not hand you an A if you dont work for it. He may seem strict, but this is college, if you cant fallow simple rules and show up on time maybe its not for you. If you are willing to put in time and effort he will do the same for you. Highly recommend if you want an education.
Schubert has no shame in correcting you in front of everyone. Very intimidating at first. Very knowledgeable. I really looked forward to his classes tho.If you can take good notes this class should be easy u gotta attend class tho. There's at least 1 quiz a week. T/F. Written to confuse you. 1 page journal once a week. Midterm and final are T/F
He is a good teacher if you are serious about learning. If you expect to pass for just showing up, then this class isn't for you. He is very interesting and expects you to behave in a very professional way. You should take the class and see if you're truly ready for college.
Professor Schubert is a very tough teacher. Lots of reading homework is assigned followed by 10 question pop quizzes which contain complex wording. He uses very sophisticated vocabulary during lectures and holds plenty of class discussions. Don't expect an easy A. You definitely need to put in 110% to succeed.
Dr. Schubert is amazing. Not an easy professor. I got my lowest grade ever in this class and I care for my grade a lot so believe me when I say the things I learned were worth it. He is very intimating, but cares very much about his students. Very happy to answer questions. Grades like a UCCSU. Sneaky quizzes. Super intelligent. #fangirl
Dr. Schubert is probably one of the best, if not the best, professor I have ever encountered. He is great at what he does but his class is very challenging. It was a tough semester but being in his class made me have a better perspective about philosphy. Did I mention he's a really great man?!
Dr. Schubert is the best professor in my LosRios experience. He's very clear about his expectations, of you as individuals & the class as a whole, from the get & holds them all the way through. He's very intelligent & provides great lectures, which include great class discussion. Not an easy class, but if you put in effort he will meet you halfway
Prof. Schubert is his own biggest fan. I really couldn't stand the guy. That being said, he was pretty entertaining with his lectures. He does give weekly TF tests that are easy if you do the assigned reading. There is a 5 page essay due toward the end of the class. He is an extremely tough grader. I do not recommend taking any classes with him.
He is a very though grader and unclear in his expectations (journals). Make sure you are always on time and never skip class. He failed students who were 5 minutes late on the final exam. Only take this class if you are really interested in the topic and if you are willing to work hard.
Great course, amazing professor. Not an easy A, but worth the effort if you're actually looking to LEARN. Intriguing and hilarious lectures. He makes everything extremely clear. (READ THE SYLLABUS) Always willing to help in any way he can. Even if you don't take his class, swing by his office for some life changing intellectual conversation.
IF YOU RATED THIS PROFESSOR WITH ANYTHING LESS THAN A 3 I WOULD HAVE TO AGREE THERE IS A PROBLEM BUT THAT PROBLEM IS YOU MR SCHUBERT IS A GREAT PROFESSOR . IT IS A PRIVILEGE BEING ONE OF HIS STUDENTS. MR SCHUBERT IS AVAILABLE WHEN HE SAYS HE WILL BE & WILL MAKE IT A PRIORITY TO HELP YOU IF YOU WANT THE HELP.
This class was weird bc im fresh outta hs so it was SUPER INTERESTING
He can be tough on certain things. A real stickler for following the syllabus. Expect a 5 page essay at the end of the semester. Honestly he is not bad but is just a major stickler.
I took Dr. Schubert back in 2011 and he still has an impact on my life to this day. The things I learned in his class have really altered the way I look at the world and the universe. I'm currently writing a book that's about to be published and a lot of the influences in it came from him. Thank you Dr. Schubert. Best class I ever had.
Overall he was pretty enthusiastic. Although he gives pop quizzes every other week. If you don't study your notes you'll do terrible. He gives you a paper which is very hard to get an A on if you don't know the material. Lectures are interesting but doesn't write it on the board unless you ask.
Prof. Schubert is a great professor. Very thorough, and most of his lectures are interesting and he is very knowledgable. For me, i disliked this course just because I was not interested in Philosophy, so if Phil doesn't intrigue you I don't recommend taking this course.
Amazing professor and an all great guy. Lectures are engaging and funny. Frequent pop quizzes but for the most part they are rather easy aside from some few tricky questions. Fair grader, if you feel otherwise its because you've been babied. My only regret is not being able to take his honors class due to it not fitting my schedule. A+ Prof
Professor Schubert is by far my favorite professor, not only are his lectures amazing but he is one of the few professors I've met that truly care for his student. This is coming from a student who was one of 120 in his class, communication is key.
Really inspiring teacher who cares about your education and teaches very well on a really dense subject. We usually had quizzes once per week and the coursework contained 2 essays and 2 exams. BUT BE WARNED, IF YOU DO NOT PUT THE OUTSIDE WORK TO STUDY, YOU WILL MOST LIKELY NOT DO WELL!
This class is run like a grad-level seminar. The only things in the grade book are a seminar presentation, term paper, and final. Expect to read, and reread. I would caution anyone taking this class who hasn't taken an intro to phil class. He is tough but very passionate about student success and is a great resource if you're trying to transfer.
This professor is one of the worst professors Ive ever had. He is super rude, and calls students out and embarrasses them in front of the whole class. He makes us all feel stupid, and is not an encouraging professor. He isnt clear on any instructions on assignments and is a picky grader. He is super stubborn and not willing to compromise with ppl
Best philosophy professor, makes lectures interesting and easy to follow. Makes sure everyone clearly understands the concepts he's discussing. Lots of class discussions and small quizzes. Tough grader, expects college level work, but fair, will admit if he made a mistake. No textbook, all texts are accessible online (free).
Professor Schubert has amazing/inspirational lectures. But if you don't attend class you won't understand anything. He's a very tough grader with the papers that are due towards the end of the semester. This truly is a class that pushes you to your limits so if you don't work hard he'll give you the grade you deserve.
I have already taken 60+ units at CRC and Dr. Schubert's class was the hardest, yet most rewarding class I have taken. He will challenge you, but it only makes you a better student and person. Get to know him and go to his office hours to establish a connection because he is there to help you succeed. He is hard so take GOOD notes & you will pass.
Do yourselves a huge favor and do not take him as a professor I am warning you. He gave no assignments until finals week he put 3 major assignments for students to complete which he was very unclear on. He is no help and does not tell you what you are graded on. I regret taking him.
Get ready to work hard if you want to make it in the class. Cant slack off or do the minimum. Schubert is overall a great professor and will help you if you ask for it. Be engaged it will help you in the long run. Im not giving the full 5 stars just because sometimes things can be a bit unclear and confusing here and there.
Engaging in class is a great way to make sure you're understanding the material, don't be afraid of sounding stupid. There's a quiz almost every week, but as long as you pay attention in every class and review your notes you should do well on them. When he provides examples, make sure to listen carefully to how it connects to the concept.
Okay, this mans class is lit and funny, especially if you participate and communicate, otherwise it's just an hour and 20 mins of him lecturing you. What he do that's not cool tho? gives out quizzes every other day. Sometimes two-three classes in a row. Also he has a 2 and 5 page essay which i broke down over. Always got A's in highschool first B.
He is a really tough grader and is very unclear. His lectures are full of his own bias and he plays favorites with students. I dont know why so many students have him such a good rating because he gives so much work and grades unfairly and does not care much about student success.
Insists on using higher level vocabulary to make everything sound intelligent, and is condescending to students. Grading scheme is unclear and makes everything worth one hundred points no matter what, then changes it at the end for weighting so you need to calculate your grade yourself.
If you take his class be prepared to have lecture every Monday and a quiz every Wednesday. He requires attendance and will not let you take a quiz or final if you come in late. He has a policy of if you share scantrons you will receive a zero also. Do not recommend I will literally enroll in any other class but his. Save yourself the time please.
Schubert is a great teacher that provides just the right amount of rigor and course work for an introduction class. It's telling that people are calling him condescending, likely because of his lectures about the lack of preparation and aptitude in his students, because several students need even cared to follow his basic writing prompts.
I took this class online during the pandemic and I rate professor Schubert he gives really good lectures you learn a lot from them. Passing this class really only takes paying attention in class, taking notes, and asking questions. He gives a quiz each week that is based off the lecture of the previous week and he is pretty understanding.
One of the nicest professors ever. I know he's intimidating, but trust me he would love to talk to you if you are having trouble in class. If you really have an issue with what he's saying - challenge him on it! One student chose the wrong answer on a quiz but defended his reasoning & Schubert gave him the points. Just talk to him, he can help you.
This class felt like my first real college class. Prof. has high expectations of you, for better or worse. With that said, he was accessible outside of class and was always happy to help. Quizzes throughout the semester on lecture material as well as two papers at the end of the semester. If you want to challenge yourself, take this class!
First time taking a Philosophy class and it's A LOT of work. He cares about your whole person, he'll walk you through the process for the final presentation and final paper. He'll call you out if you're not engaged in the discussion. Participation and office hours are key! Final exam is 3 essays questions choose own topics. Read 3 books for class.
He's very intelligent
Hard to follow teaching materials. POOR LECTURE!
I loved Professor Schubert's Intro to Philosophy Class! It was very discussion based, with one easy quiz every week. Overall, not a lot of homework at all, and the lectures were actually so thought provoking. He did a lecture the last week about how college is a scam- I still think about it from time to time.
Dr. Schubert was a very difficult professor. I took him for my Phil 300 class. I did the one extra credit opportunity and somehow it brought my grade down??? The quizzes, mid-term, and final are easy if you listen to the lecture. The discussions are 40% of your grade and they are extremely challenging.
Professor Schubert is a stickler on grading. We had to do discussions every week which were worth 40% of your grade and he graded them extremely harsh. If you think about taking this class, take it with a different professor
please dont ever take this class. the amount of work for an asynch class that im only doing for gen ed is unreal. even if you do your assignment perfectly, he'll still have something negative to say.
Genuinely ruined my interest in philosophy.
Great human being. Great presenter. Really tough grader. Lots of reading. Be prepared to try, and try hard for an A.
Honestly, he was a horrible instructor and heavily plays favorites. steer clear. Messed up the course of my academic journey and made me stressed out at my worst.
The workload is heavy, but if you stay engaged and use helpful resources like Unstuckstudy, you can do well. Schubert grades strictly, so be prepared to put in the effort.
