The class was hard and he was a little crazy which made it interesting....if you like that sort of thing
very demanding. obsessed with form more than content. Translation: make sure your papers have 1 inch margins then fill every page with the phrase: "art is great." and you'll do well. oh, memorize dates like your underware size. they tend to come

ok instructor. tests not too hard. you my find his hair and beard annoying though.
He's a pretty weird character which makes him interesting to listen to. read the book! and study! no way you will pass if you dont. if you think theres a mistake in your grade.. talk to him and keep all of your work in case.
A lot is expected out of his students. Which in the long run is a good thing...it makes you work harder. As a result you end up with some paintings that you really worked hard on and that you can be proud about. Serros is an excelent choice for the seri
I absolutely loved this class. I wish there was another one that I could take around the same subject. I'm yet to meet a professor that is smarter then Richard Serros.
A very intelligent guy and interesting lectures, though he rambled a lot and was always behind schedule. I enjoyed the class, but it's a lot of memorization, so be prepared to take the time to study.
Mr. Serros is a fasinating creature and really cool but he expects his students to respect him.DON'T COME IN LATE OR BANG ON THE DOOR!!Bad.His class is really hard though. You have to study&pay attention in class&u'll do fine!
This gut is a great teacher, and I encourage anybody interested in a good class to take Mr. Serros.
Serros is awesome! He is quite the character. He expects a lot from students, but is helpful.
He is a great teacher! If you show up everyday and just do what he tells you to do, you will do fine.
Dr. Serros is one amazing dude. What he's accomplished in his life is incredible and he is SO HUMBLE about it. His class was very VERY difficult for me but I've never learned so much in one class before. His teaching style is werid but it really works. Ended up getting an A when my points added up to a C and I didn't even talk to him about it. : )
I wanted to like this class, but I hated it. We spent weeks studying DaVinci and barely skimmed everything else. Totally pompous and unapproachable.
strict to the bone. must do all HW assignments just to past with a C.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. Best teacher at MJC! Had him for various Art History, Drawing, Painting, courses. I am now a professional artist because of him!
the man is a GENIUS! he knows so much! its amazing learning what he has to offer and is really easy to learn from. he jokes with the students and really makes it fun
I found him ****, controlling and often extremely inappropriate. He seemed to really enjoy putting people on the spot. His grading methods were outrageously arbitrary. I dreaded going to his class because of his abrasive personality.
i can sum it up in four words: cheese and chocolate day. i have taken many a class from Dr. Serros (not including the times i have modeled for figure drawing) and can say that if you are not predisposed for the experience, you'll probably hate it. shame on you.
I Love This Teacher, He's Awesome
He's a really good teacher. His teachings and opinions are very interesting.
Excellent teacher, excellent grasp and transmission of subject matter. Likes to create competition in class.
Dr.Serros can be very intimidating to those who are not open to learning and will find him difficult to learn from. Openmindedness is key to learning from him. He is hard and has a huge amount of knowledge to share and is more than willing to share it! Oh yea, the SF field trip is the best!
This class takes a good amount of effort if you want a good grade. It is not difficult to say, but you do need to study the material dates, names, and what the thing is made of(limestone, plaster.. etc) It can be a bit stressfull but large extra credit opportunity that is available helps greatly. Grades easy on the essays though!
He never gave us a clear syllabus of the scheduling, so it was sometimes hard to figure out when things where, and when exams would be made. You really have to pay attention to him to do good, as well as not be late. he's really stubborn
Came off a bit gruff on the first day. Over time ease up a lot and turn out to be really cool.
funny teacher with alot of information...he's written his own book so he knows his stuff. Study and make alot of notes and you'll be fine.
Great Teacher! I had him for figure drawing, Figure drawing 2 and Art history. He is tough, yet if your serious about art, would you want it any different?
great teacher, very passionate! you'll learn tons from this man
I have taken many art art history courses, and figure drawing twice from Dr. Serros. I am now at a CSU, and honestly feel that I am getting a subpar education compared to Dr. Serros's classes. You will be hard pressed to find a prof. like him at any CSU. Art history courses are a breeze now, and the oil painting profs look like amateurs.
Dr Serros helps a student build self concept, Self concept is what you understand about yourself He has you research artists you can respect It is best to learn from a master He helps you make your work stronger and compare yourself against yourself not someone else. I have confidence to create art and self esteem is how to get it done
The best teacher ever. very informative class. very inspairing teacher.
Doesn't follow the syllabus at all. Changes the rules arbitrarily. I worked hard in his class for nothing. First B I ever got in art.
I love that he is very informative and he doesn't take crap.
Has unfortunately stopped teaching art classes, now only teaches art history. Great teacher - he'll challenge you if you've got any brains and if you haven't got any he'll help you try. He comes off gruff but he really is immensely patient with people as long as they are putting in the effort.
I took his class with about 300 people in it at 8 in the morning! Never do that!!! I fell asleep every day. I am not an art major and could not follow or remeber every sing thing about each thing of art. Basicly that is all you have to do, is remember what, when, and where aabout each art thing. And there is about 300 of them! He does not follow
Really intense professor who's made original contributions to his field. The lectures are fascinating. Don't just rely on the online powerpoints. Listening to the man talk passionately is the best part. Be prepared to contribute to discussions, never shrug and say, "I don't know." Very challenging and combative, but inspiring. NEVER COME IN LATE.
Dr. Serros is a really good teacher. Though he does put you on the spot, and hardly gives notice of homework and test dates, he's a very cool guy. Very funny, and interesting stuff! Pretty easy class, extra credit avaiable, lectures are interesting if you give them a chance. Not a lot of work at all.
I took this class online and he demanded way too much for a 1 month long online class. The assignments weren't hard--just too many of them! It was like he expected us to put in at least 30 hours a week for the class regardless of our other responsibilities.
so i recommend taking his evening class because hes a cool teacher n all but its too hard to listen to him in the morning. The homework isnt really that hard its just you have to be on top of yourself because its mostly online stuff and he doesnt remind you. its an ok class but sometimes soo boringggggg
Like the person above, I took him for a five-week online class. I got an A, but the class was ridiculous. Extremely disorganized. He had no idea what was reaonable for only five weeks. I learned a lot from the book, not him. Grades papers on what info you include but does not say what he wants beforehand. Not recommended!!!
bascily this teacher is for people who REALLY care about art if u just want a easy class this is not it, he takes alot out of the book and the syllabes it is defficult to desipher wat should be taken as notes since he doesnt use any and so just talks as it comes to him , u have to REALLY listen and NEVER BE LATE or leave during class
Despite what others have said his class is not that difficult. Just show up to class spend a few hours a week doing the discussion and reading the study guide. This should earn you at least a B. Dr. Serros has a huge unwarranted ego so just don't piss him off. If you think this class is hard try Elzbieta Jarretts math class.
I thought through out the whole time that I took his class that I was failing and all he said in his funny raspy voice was don't worry about it. I ended up getting an A in the class. I never studied, I just came to class and I did every single assignment. I think he is really interesting. He says terracotta and strata really funny though. lol
I would highly recommend Dr. Serros for anyone who enjoys art. I always loved his lectures, he always gets you thinking. You have discussions and homework quiet often, but they're not difficult at all. Be sure to study for his exams though!
Professor Serros is not a professor for everyone. I felt there was a lack of discussion, organization, and answers that were acceptable other than his own. He's pretty preachy also... however, if you are really into art and can handle stubborn personalities and work, then you'll do fine. The work is pretty remedial, and I rarely used the textbook.
Serros is a very educated and intellegent man, in fact, so intellegent that he very often rambles during his lecture which really throws everyone off. He's a nice guy and funny, but I was very bored in class and everything he goes over is on his website. Easy class if you do the homework, not so easy to sit through for an hour and a half.
Dr. Serros is fun. He loves what he is teaching but I believe he also realizes it can get boring for some therefore he tries to make the class fun. However this class can be really bad for those who doesn't care for art. Long story short, if you like art you will love his class. Print out his study guides and bring them to class. be sure to study!
Honestly, by far the worse teacher I have ever had. Sitting in his class is comparable to sitting at a funeral long and boring. Strongly advising people not to take this class it's super boring and SO hard to figure out what you're supposed to be doing with the mid term. One page says a paragraph and the next says a page. WTH!!!! Need more clarity!
Dr. Serros is a magnificent teacher! I always looked forward to his classes. He is full of knowledge, you learn more than just art history in his classes! He has one pet-peeve..DONT BE LATE!! I deffinately recommend him!!!
I adore Dr.Serro's class because I have learned so many things and he's one of those teachers you actually enjoy being around. The only "problem" I have are the homework assignments- they can get random, disorganized, and confusing. However, I love listening to his lectures and his class is always fun & interesting.
Dr Serros is one interesting man! He can be quite the hard ass but if you listen you will learn. the best advice i can give is to get active in the class and when he offers extra credit DO IT because it won't be very often and his test are hard even if you do study. Get to know the guy and you'll enjoy him
He's really funny and nice. I didn't care about the material, but the class itself is fun because of the way he tells stories about the art. If you want to skip through a boring part just ask him a question and you'll set him off talking for 20 minutes about his trip to the moon! I love it! Don't be late though, or he'll make you sit on the floor.
Loved his enthusiasm for Art, yet his personality is extremely abrasive, He put people on the spot too much and it distracts people from learning. He also talks about himself a little too much. I pay to learn about the subject not about the professors life. 2hrs total class time, 1 hr professors life, 1 hr learning the material.
I really regret taking this class. It is beyond boring. EXTREMELY hard to stay awake. and he picks on people who cant stay awake like uhhh i wonder whyy? SOOOO BORING. homework is LONG and pointless. test a hard. Term paper is a waste of time. you cant leave the class at all not even to go the restroom. wouldnt recommend at all. save yourself.
He is a kindnof teacher that makes the class fun for students. He is asking little too much for 3 credit class but he actually managed to teach to a bad student like I am. It might be a little hard to keep up if you are an ESL student. Make sure you understand english very well. He is an awesome character and really fun to talk to. Do the homeworks and study for quizes and you will pass the class. If he says this is importand make sure to know a lot about the piece. Study the practice quiz ;)
The most brilliant teacher I've ever met.
He's a pretty decent teacher and really great at discussing art and getting people involved in the class. Homework is fairly easy and is due right before tests/quizzes. Doing just the homework and paying attention really helps with tests and will guarantee great grades.
The most brilliant professor i've ever had the pleasure of learning from, EVER. Dr. Serros' knowledge of art history is sharp and you'll be surprised by all the things you never really payed attention to. I literally walked out of class everytime inspired and intrigued. To those truely interested in art,I definitely recommend taking this class.
Wonderful professor, extremely passionate about what he teaches and honestly makes you want to be too! His class discussions are always interesting... Pay attention during lecture, study quizzes, participate in discussions & you'll do well! I can honestly say I have a greater love and appreciation for art after taking his class!
Dr. Serros is an awesome professor. He is very helpful, and he likes to connect with his students to get to know them better. If you pay attention in class, do the homework, and study for the tests and quizzes it will be easy.
Not a terrible professor, he is quite knowledgeable about his subject. However, he is incredibly unorganized and can't ever seem to get around to grading. His turnitin.com links aren't always set up on time and hes kind of rude sometimes for no reason. Lots of chances for extra credit though.
If you are an Art major, you should take all of Dr. Serros art classes because there is no one else like him, Anywhere! He is a brilliant individual and has an immense passion for art. Sure his classes are tough, but what do you expect? MJC is very lucky to have a professor of his caliber and love of art.
Loved this class took him back in 1989 and he sure has relaxed alot. He is funny and makes the class fun. You MUST study and MUST attend or you wont get a decent grade. He knows what he is talking about and I learned so much
Great teacher. Art majors NEED to take him. He's wonderful. If you cant draw, its ok. If you cant listen, then youll have problems. Listen to what hes telling you and wants you to do and you will be fine.
Serros is an interesting individual. His lectures demonstrate his passion for art, and are quite inspiring. There is a fair amount of reading and research involved, but not out of the realm of what is expected in a college course. This course will certainly open your mind up to new understandings about art. Don't be late, he will get ya!
Dr. Serros is a very intelligent person and always helpful. He offers to help students after class and during office hours, which I really liked. Overall, I thought he was extremely knowledgeable in art. Make sure to show up to class on time though, and don't even be a minute late or he will notice! You will learn ALOT in his classes.
I took this class because he got good reviews... Art majors love him. I'm a liberal studies major. AVOID LIKE THE PLAGUE. Miserably boring class! I'm an honor roll student & I flunked every test, even though I'd spend hours studying. Don't ask questions, because he'll single you out and make you fee like an idiot in front of everyone.
If you're not an art major or already took one of his class, he will favor them over you. Very boring lectures and very unorganized. He's never there during office hours and when I need help. Very frustrating! He just expects you to be an "art genius" and thinks that this is 3rd grade stuff. Really? I wouldn't recommend at all.
Dr. Serros is very passionate about art his lectures are fast pace, and cover a lot of info. He has personal seen many of the art works he teaches about. He stays up with what is happening right now in the art world. If you want to really learn take his classes. Quick before he is gone.
Awesome teacher. Although some don't like him. Don't take his class if you're not serious about the subject matter.Had a great time, he's seen most of the art in person. It is important that you study on your own. He gives you links to study guides with everything you need to know.
i am surprised i passed his class with a B theres alot to remember because the info he is very critical and makes sure u dont make him look like a fool he does expect you to know stuff he is a punk but pay attention in class hes very boring i dreaded class but it's passiable
As the semester progressed, Professor Serros would lecture less and less about what would actually be on the tests/quizzes. It is great when a professor is enthusiastic about a subject. It is not so great when he acknowledges that you will spend most of your time "Google-ing" the answers to quizzes because they are not in the book or lectures.
I really enjoyed Mr. Serros lectures, he made learning about ancient Art extremely interesting. He is very knowledgeable and a very talented artist. I really enjoyed writing the three papers he assigned. I really recommend taking Serros for art if you want to learn about Art history and enjoy it at the same time.
Many students criticize Dr. Serros for being long-winded and tough, but he is this way for good reason. He expects you to have passion, to work hard, and to be creative. I have taken every class he teaches and he has become a mentor to me. If you let him, he will help you reach for the stars. I owe him so much.
I have taken a couple classes with Dr. Serros and I learned a lot from him. He is an intimidating person and expects a lot from his students, but I feel in a good way. He is very knowledgeable and wants his students to work hard to achieve and pass his course. He keeps you on your toes and I think every art student should take a class from him.
I learned so much about art and life from Dr. Serros. His classes are difficult at times but he pushes you to be the best. A must for serious art majors, this man has so much knowledge! He prepares you for the reality of a career in the art world. I absolutely love his teaching style. He's very involved in class. Take him, he's wonderful!
Dr. Serros is AMAZING! He is passionate about his work, students, and life itself! His lectures are insane, in that he uses absolutely NO NOTES and lectures purely off of memory. As an artist, his work is EXQUISITE & ONE OF A KIND! Attend class and study! Go to his office hours and talk with him--trust me, his bark is worse than his bite.
I took Serros for Art History. Very unorganized and boring class. He often goes off topic, and most the items he says to study aren't even on the tests. I recommend taking with another professor.
Favorite teacher by far! Really cares about his students! He's funny and is understanding if you talk to him. In his lectures he can go off topic but it's all relatable in the bigger picture. You learn a LOT if you pay attention and not just all for history of the arts.
Personality: Egotistical. Pained himself and has referred to himself as a Satyr, which implies he thinks he has great sexual prowess. Likes to berate students who are not able to make it to San Francisco to visit galleries. Likes to refer to some past students as "punks". Very disappointing little man. Class: Very average art history class.
I've really enjoyed this class. Dr. Serros is one of the funniest and coolest teachers I have ever had. As long as you attend the class, follow the syllabus, and pay attention to his lectures, you should be able to enjoy the class and pass it with a good grade.
Meh. Serros is not going to help you, he does not believe in that. He lectures based on his own knowledge and he knows a lot. Online tests and in class tests have everything to do with the study guide- which you should print out @ Office Depot. DONT BUY THE BOOK! If you can memorize 50+ Art info, class will be v easy. Also gives out a ton of E.C!
I had a very difficult time in this class although you may think it'll be an easy class, it is not. I am a drawer and the comments the teacher made to me were unprofessional, I did not appreciate how he treated me. He is a very hard critiquer and even when you asked what you could do better, his feedback was not helpful and made me feel horrible.
I had taken one of Serros' classes before, so I was prepared for lectures that veer off topic and the reliance on study guides to pass quizzes. I don't think his classes are hard, you just have to participate, pay attention, and do your work. A lot of people make him out to be intimidating or a tough grader but I didn't have that experience.
I have no idea how I got an A in this class. Dr Serros is very opinionated and at times, honestly offensive. Personal irritation aside, he is amazing artist and has great stories but rambles - a lot. He doesn't know what personal space is lol. Many quizzes, online hw every other week. DO NOT take this is you get awkward on the spot, no regrets here
This is a great class if you want to be treated like you're in grade school! Can get annoyed and aggravated very easily. DO NOT be late to his class, he will make an example of you and force you to sit in the front. Called us children, and individually called out those who have missed two or more days of class. Horrible teacher.
One of the best teachers & the worst teachers I've ever had. He takes the grandfather approach & teaches you about life which is valuable. But his manners & respect for his students is horrible. Do not be late to his class or he will humiliate you. He teaches like it's religious philosophy more than art history. Focus on study guide for the exams.
Dr. Serros is litteraly the easiest A you will ever get. He grades his PAPERS on completion. He gives examples to how it is done, just follow the examples line by line. Quick TIP: If you sit in the front he will expect so much from you and will use you in examples. He lectures 100% off of memory, bring coffee to class!
Cool teacher+interesting lectures. Lectures drag on too long though, which makes it really boring. He will most likely put you on the spot during class to answer questions, or if you're sleeping/on your phone. Will make you take tests on chapters he didn't finish teaching. Unorganized. Don't be late. Miss too much class and you will be dropped.
He would randomly post assignments on canvas without a pattern or without enough time you to have a decent notice to prepare for written assignments. He postest a final term paper and then gave another 1300 word research paper with only two days notice before it was due as a final BEFORE finals week. The work is easy though, if you catch it on time
My favorite professor! Yes there was a lot of material covered, and a lot of memorization, but he is an amazing teacher and his wisdom is infinite! He takes an interest in his students and is more than willing to help. He offers a ton of extra credit as well.
Dr. Serros is like Gandalf the Grey, he looks & acts like a wizard. Be prepared to memorize an extensive amount of information that he will go over with you in class. As long as you study the material you should be fine. He offers extra credit, so take advantage of it! Good sense of humor and is willing to work with you, but put in your part too!
Finishing an associates in art history with this professor
Richard is something else. Great guy, but his art history class is hard and will make you want to strangle him sometimes. Get on his good side, always study for tests. Some of the content you study will not show up on his tests so really do your research. Lots of memorizing.
Great guy, but not such a great Professor. His lectures get off topic much too often and because of this, he doesn't go over test material in class. He doesn't test very often, but you will need to follow the study guides and readings in order to pass. DON'T BE LATE AND DON'T SIT IN THE BACK! Check Canvas every day for pop-assignments. UNORGANIZED!
He is not clear on what he teaches at all. But if you are really good at remembering things you should take him. But also he is rude and likes to humiliate and make students stupid. Do not take him
Don't take this class it's a waste of time and textbooks are heavy and expensive. I never want to have him as a teacher he told the class that God is not real and would bash catholics. I respect what people may believe but I didn't expect for my art professor to explain to us why God is not real I was excepting him to give a lecture on art.
