Mr. Pirate shirts, squeaky voice and stupid hair - this guy is just a joke- no clue what he's talking about!
Man! After 1 year of Michelle Wall, you could hear the echos of the U1 collective... "Sparrr-ling... Sparr-linng... Sparr-linng"
Fantastic prof. Knows how to explain the big picture. You'll all realize how good he was in Bio in your third year, after you encounter numerous terrible profs. P.S. don't pan Ms. Wall here - she was really good teacher, although that ppt didn't work
Absolutely TERRIBLE. His notes were awful, and he never stayed on topic. He wore those pirate shirts, and had his son pretend he was a duck. You learned absolutely nothing from him. Anyone is better than him.
absolute worst prof I have ever had. He makes no sense and note style is impossible to read or understand.

Not so clear on the notes, but a good prof. Be prepared to answer questions on the exams that are a bit of out of the box thinking
Lecture videos suck but is very helpful in person and cahllenges you...and i love the Gaston shirts and great jokes. Two thumbs way up!!
He may be a really helpful guy but some of his lectures make no sense and his exams are really hard! I know a lot of great students who almost failed there exam cause there was material on it that he barely talked about in class. High school bio saved me on the exam. He's funny but really horrible.
A good teacher but, CRAZY!! The puffy shirts & mullets are just the begining!
he was fun and interesting. dont copy down his notes, they wont help you later. just listen to him and take your own, they will make more sense. his videos were fun, kept you on your toes
Tests are hard, lecture notes are not helpful when it comes to studying for test. Test questions are ridiculously difficult. He smells too.
His notes were really really hard to study. At least I learned one thing from him - to take your own notes when the notes given are really bad. At the time the stuff was humorous and he was great, which I give him lots of credit for, but I was totally lost when studying for the exam.
SPARLING IS PITIFUL. His notes are pitiful and his tests are impossible. Be prepared to encounter random minute details on his tests. He completely misses testing important facts for his tests. Frankly, if you had the choice to choose either a beaver or Sparling to teach you, choose the beaver.
His exam questions are ridiculous. He has the weirdest clothes i have ever seen. His exams suck. Simple as that.
Sparling is GREAT! Took him for Bio B and didn't mind him then. Now i'm taking him for Microbial Phys and he is hilarious. There are lots of stupid first years bashing him cuz they didn't study enough, and he actually makes you think on exams instead of merely memorizing useless "crud".
I agree with all of the people on this board, be prepared for his notes, as they can really suck out, so make your own. I studied hard for this class, and im not a "stupid first year" so please don't take that persons comment too seriously. They are obviously a brown-noser.
Lousy, Sucks
Umm...questions are so weird. Know your stuff or you will be screwed. Style of questions are purely to weed out students. Not that hard if you pay attention to detail.
Not a bad prof, the best of all the bio B guys this year. Interesting fashion sense. I got an A on the midterm without studying. If you aren't able to remember facts, you shouldn't be taking an introductory bio class, dont blame the prof for it being 'too hard'
Don't bother with his notes, you'll be much better off reading the textbook and making your own. Sometimes gets a bit creative with exam questions.
He starts of your biology b year super hard. You takes notes in his class and then get home and read your notes and you are totally lost. He makes his exam questions so difficult, you must know all details of everything! Not impressed!
well i failed this course, and im usually a B+ student. His exam questions are so dumb... and the first 2 lectures are so easy to follow, great notes. But i was so lost on the 3rd lecture. The notes made NO sense... he is not very approachable. I had to watch his lecture videos at least twice each & they still didnt make sense. Crazy hard course
terrible....worst prof ever
I have never studied harder for an exam, than my first bio b midterm. Very discouraging. I understood the majority of the material, but his questions are very tricky. Some really irrelevent trick questions as well, which as far as im aware, we never in the notes. It doesnt help he has a lisp of sorts going on either.
If you can pass his first exam (in bio B), its smooth sailing the rest of the way. His notes are awful, filled with random scribbles that make no sense. Exam questions are tricky, and he rarely repeats stuff from old exams (unlike the other profs in this course).
I got a very good mark on his exam. I admit his lectures and notes are confusing(respirtation, kreb cycle is a mess!). Take your own notes! Questions on the exam are very basic, but they are thinking questions. You must understand the material and apply it. He puts on more exciting vidio lectures than the other profs.(he is crazy and funny)
He's interesting, and pretty funny. Since Bio B is spilt up with the 3 profs, and he is the first to teach - he seems more helpful when you go see him when it isn't his turn teaching. One problem is that he kind of overexplains, and it can get rather confusing.
compared to sumner and graham (the other 2 profs for this course), sparling is MUCH better. he's entertaining and keeps your attention. his notes aren't the greatest, but go and listen to his lectures. HIS SON HAS A FREAKIN MULLET, THAT'S DYNAMITE
It's not about bio being hard, that's another story. Sparling is def. eccentric. Confusing? Yes. Didn't like his teaching style at all, and for those that like organized notes, it's best that you move along. As far as I'm concerned, he makes a hard course harder. If you're into that, go for it.
the bio program is terrible. video lectures are very hard, then when you have a proff who scriles hsi notes, putting X's through things circling drawing lines from top to the bottom so confusing, bad prof.
Let's see. It's a shame that you are forced to watch his lectures, and you there is nothing getting around it. His notes are a mess, he's a mess, he needs to get a hold of his life. He tries to be funny, really its just akward. *box, arrow* Seems nice though. Exams are kinda tricky but nothing too bad. Relief will come with a 'sane' Graham.
Hes a great guy, very approable like a mad scientist. He's notes are hard, but he did say " don't follow MY notes ". I didn't get that also. But yeah just don't follow his notes and use the textbook instead ( Bones to meat notetaking). Just use ur notes and textbook together and use the sample questions in the biol 1020 site he sometimes recycle.
Mr. Sparling teaches through videos so that there is a uniform teaching performance for all students taking biology. Mr. Sparling does his job, but all of the info. in his lectures go way over your head. His exams are unbearable and have little actually to do with the material, but all questions are 'trick' questions.

Funny guy, he is really nice always welcomes you to come ask him questions, his notes suck, and all his exam questions are trick questiosn but he is really helpful, alot more helpful than grahm
He has a lot of character, is friendly, and makes the course interesting. His exam questions are quite challenging. Is easy to approach .....unlike the OTHER professor for the second half of BIOL 1020.
Notes are all over the place (just leave room under everything and assume you will be going back to it, always). He seems to assume you already know a lot about bio and he's just filling you in on some missing pieces. He answers questions with hugely complicated answers that need deciphering. He was, though, my favorite of the bio b profs.
He was OK. His notes are very unorganized - arrows pointing everywhere. Make sure you put down extra notes to explain his notes otherwise studying is frustrating. His jokes and treating us like junior high students got old. Don't get too bogged down reading the textbook. He tests from his notes which is nice. Seemed fairly approachable.
His notes will drive you insane. The arrows go everywhere which sort of confuse you of the information. He's nice, but when he tells you that you only have to study his notes, he's somewhat lying. Study the text book as well.
It was a surreal experience when I saw him in real life for the first time; the notion of ivory tower created by video lectures is certainly present in first year BIO. Study his notes, the textbook, and old exams.

Although a got a good grade, I found Sparlings lectures and notes to be confusing. His jokes are so bad that they're kind of funny. Nice guy, but made the course harder than it would have been otherwise.
As others have already mentioned, the notes are abosolutely terrible with arrows and boxes everywhere. Also ~ARROW~ ~ARROW~ ~BOX~ the exam questions are all trick questions.
exam questions were hard.
lol, i know, freaking arrow box arrow. He makes this course so hard, u read so hard and you think you've got it then in the exam he rear ends you. sadly not much choice coz i think you HAVE to take him
This course is hard not in content but in terms of the amount you are required to know (each lecture is videotaped so that there is no stopping him from zipping through everything). My advice: Take the notes he gives you and go through the relevant details IN THE TEXTBOOK. He gives textbook references on the biology website.
He's a really nice guy, but his exam questions are hard.
Really good prof. Read the text with the notes and you'll do fine on his exam questions. Far better than Graham.
Sparling is a dynamic teacher but as others have noted this class requires one to know a ridiculous amount of material. You can tell by the marking scheme (46% is a pass). This class' purpose must be to weed people out as you do not come out feeling like you've learned even 20% of what they throw at you
his notes were super confusing and his jokes were horrible. the only way i passed his section was by reading the textbook
Terrible notes, lectures do not help other than give you a guideline as to what you need to read in the textbook. He is a nice guy but a terrible professor for this class, do not depend on the lectuers, memorize and understand every word in the textbook.
Egotistic fool who doesn't know how to teach. Highly disorganized and without direction during lecture. Deliberately condescending and arrogant. He appears as if he is only teaching because he has to. It's embarrassing that he considers himself a microbiologist.
Sparling's lectures were all over the place and very hard to follow. His notes were disorganized with lots of arrows which made it difficult to understand the material.
I don't know why people are being so mean about Dr. Sparling's teaching methods. I thought his section of the course was interesting and engaging. If you're a good student with an interest in the subject matter, you'll really enjoy this prof. He does an excellent job teaching difficult material.
Tries to make material engaging using everyday references. Notes are all over the place, amount of material covered is enormous and exam questions are difficult and designed to throw you off. If you track him down in his office, he will explain concepts to you as best he can. Overall not a very good prof.
I think he is funny, or at least tries to be and it is a nice change
try to follow his speech instead of copying down what he writes on the paper. To those who have pronounced him a "bad professor" is probably because lots of students will do poorly in this class because it is designed to weed students out. The material is very simple if you can make connections and understand the concepts.
Dr. Sparling is an amazing professor. Although his lecture notes are sometimes all over the place, he still clearly teaches all the material. I'd give him a 10 out of 10!
Good Prof. Have to definately pay attention in his class because there is a lot of material to cover. Some written notes hard to understand, but following his verbal explanation should be fine. Failure in the class is an inability to memorize the material, not because of the prof's explanations. Makes class interesting as well.
TAKE MY WORDS!!!!!! Avoid him if you can. He is horrible. The worst notes ever. Bunch of tangents and vectors. Even if u go to his class, when u try to study his notes later for exams, you wont understand a damn thing. This dumass claims that people don't know how to take notes, where as me and all my friends think he is just an arrogant asswhole.
OMG!!! WORST NOTES EVER!!! NOT A GOOD PROF AT ALL
terrible notes, ridiculous amount to know, unbelievable exam questions.
WOW THANKS UNIVERSITY OF MANITOBA BIOLOGY FOR WASTING MY MONEY! YOU GUYS SHOULD HIRE PASSIONATE PROFFS WHO LOVE SEEING THEIR STUDENTS EXCELL AND ALSO VERY ORGANIZED. GHEZ this proff's notes are messy and his writing sucks. His diagrams are like a LABYRINTH OF LINES INTERTWINED WITH UTTER PERPLEXITY! ITS PLAIN CONFUSING!! NOT RECOMMENDED!
If you follow the lecture notes you will be fine, most of his exam material is from the lectures. Once you get past some of his odd behaviors not too bad of a prof.
It's probably not his fault the but exam esp the final exam is absolutely brutal. Tons of trick question. Ok prof, but if it was not for the video lecture he'd be impossible to comprehend. You have to watch the lecture a few time to get it. I had 93% in first midterm but ended up with a B after the final so be warned, study hard for the final, hard
Definitely a difficult class, and though his notes can be hard to follow at times (though they were far better than many other profs I've had), he explains as he writes which helps with the learning in class. Don't bother reading the textbook but DEFINITELY BUY THE OLD EXAMS FROM THE BOOKSTORE!!!
All im going to say is.... you are not going to survive the final.....
Best prof. ever, new one SUCKS!
one of the worst profs I have ever had, very difficult exams
His video lectures are useless... you MUST study from the textbook directly. Terrible proff and his exams are written horribly.
awesome prof, tests are fair, classes are fun. Do not be intimidated by all the first year bio students giving bad reviews, he is much better in 3rd and 4th year courses.
Sparling is by far the best professor at the university. He's passionate about micro, extremely intelligent and will explain anything you are unclear of. Upset with a mark? Talk to him, he'll help you do better. Lectures are exciting, he's all over the place but that's just his personality.
Hard class. Specifically words questions to weed out students on the first mid term. Study the textbook. Really boring lab. Horrible structure to his notes. Make sure you study. Nice guy and funny and entertaining but tough exam. Half the class usually drops early.
Great professor. Genuinely cares about his students. He is definitely all over the place but if you take the time to ask for help and clarification, you will succeed. Very interesting lecture style which helped me improve my note-taking skills by miles. One of my favourite professors at the U of M!
Dr. Sparling has a very interesting lecture style. He acted out a lot of things in strange ways, but because of that they stuck in my head and I did well. His exams are pretty tough with tricky wording. He posts his notes which are pretty thorough and helpful. He's super friendly in person and willing to help with any questions. A great prof!
Dr. Sparling has an interesting lecture style. He often acted things out which was amusing at the time, but actually helped me to remember those concepts really well. His exams are pretty tough with very tricky wording. He posts his notes online which are quite thorough and helpful. You will need to study hard, but he's a great prof!
This was a good professor until the final exam.Everyone did well on the midterm even though it was tricky, the average was 75 and he mentioned in class: "The average was way too high, this is not usual for me". Then he made the final exam extremely confusing, tricky, questions involving theory never seen in class.Reading the textbook was no help :(
The exam was just awful. It was tricky, and had questions derived from theories not necessarily covered in class, as opposed to the midterm which was a piece of cake. I didn't think the exam was fair. Know everything. Make sure that you are an active listener in class. Other than that, he's a nice guy. Reponds to emails promptly and is helpful.
The final wasn't fair. I am not happy at all. He's a cool guy but the exam was tricky and hard, and covered certain ideas not covered in class. I also found that after checking my notes, and the answer key, the answers were different. I'm sorry but I won't give a good review. I slaved for a week studying and I almost cried when I left the exam.
I don't understand why Sparling has such a low rating. He was one of my favorite first year profs, very dynamic, and this course was THE EASIEST A+ I ever got. I heard the material is not as hard as previous years now. Just study his notes, don't need textbook at all.
Easy class, clear explanations
Wow, midterm was nothing compared to the previous midterm in terms of way the questions were worded, and its been 2 weeks and we still haven't received our midterm marks. For real, I already received my biochem mark, this is a mc exam, it shouldn't take 2 weeks.
The class seemed easy and the way he explains his material is very clear. However the midterm was a killer, with an average of around 60%. The questions were tricky and some not even backed up with the notes.
in lectures, he's pretty entertaining. drawback, is that he's honestly not to approachable. i enjoyed the class a lot just for the material and his quirkiness, but other than that, the exams were pretty normal. midterm was seriously a breeze, the final (as per tradition) was a bit more intense. but i hear that's his thing. overall, i've had worse.
Amazing prof! Makes every lecture interesting, cracks jokes, and his exams are fair- straight out of the notes! Loved this class and Dr. Sparling!
Dr. Sparling's explanation were clear enough and he is willing to help through emails or during office hours when you need help. The exams are based on lecture notes and they are fair. No need for textbook (I rarely used it). However, the lab was challenging. Study hard to get good marks!
Dr. Sparling is an amazing prof and you can tell he really loves his job. He tries to make his lectures as interesting as possible. He is incredibly accessible and replies to emails very fast. This guy is just great all around.
Great prof. Answers all his email
Dr. Sparling is a fantastic prof. You can tell he loves teaching, you will never have a dull class. Good at answering questions and giving meaningful answers during the lectures so don't be afraid to raise your hand.
Absolutely Fantastic, amazing teaching style. Lecture notes were provided and were very good. he was very enthusiastic about teaching this course, as this was his first time. exams were clear, no trick questions just wanted to test your knowledge. highly recommended, would love to have him again.
Was his first time teaching this course, pacing and notes were all over the place. There's a LOT of content and confusing figures and examples. He does a lot of research and incorporates a ton of research material. Attendance is absolutely mandatory.
He's an okay prof. His lectures don't really add much value to the notes. Often wastes class time going over material that's already been covered or talking about something irrelevant to the class.
Dr. Sparling is an absolute gem, both as a professor, but also as a human being. I don't know why the other ratings are so harsh, he is a good man, explains concepts well, and cares about his students. I would take him again as a professor in a heartbeat.
Dr. Sparling is one of the best profs I've ever had :)
Sparling is an amazing professor! He expands on the material in detail and always encourages the class to think deeper about the material and to find the connections between the concepts. He has tough exams, but I learned a lot from this course and quite enjoyed the material. Also, all the info you need is in the lectures, no textbook required.
He's a funny guy or at least tries to be so lectures aren't terrible but his way of explaining some concepts in the class aren't the best. If you need to get help outside of lecture he is easy to reach and will help as much as he can. Exams are tough because multiple choice answers are all similar. Not a terrible prof but wouldnt take him again.
His tests questions are horrible, super time-consuming. The course was affected by the strike and he did NOT provide any sort of "compassionate" towards the students. Cut down 3 slides in his lecture and that's it. Ended up VW the course.
Sparling is a gem. Great email responses, really wants you to succeed. Very understanding of conflicts. Really passionate about the course material. Beware of the course material though, the first half is a little dry but the second half definitely picks up (reminiscent of biochem, but you can handle it!). Tests online were short on time.
Handled Microbiology 3 well. The material itself was boring but that wasn't Sparling's fault, it's more so the course itself.
Dr. Sparling is a good professor. Very caring and understanding, wants you to do well. He sometimes goes off on tangents during lectures or starts "talking" to the bacteria, I found it entertaining in otherwise boring lecture material. Tests aren't "hard" but definitely test your understanding, not memorization so make sure you keep ontop of stuff!
Dr. Sparling is very kind, he seems to really want to see his students succeed. He gives in depth answers to emails and never makes his students feel dumb for asking questions. I did feel that his lecture slides were extremely hard to follow along with, and while lecturing, he often jumped from topic to topic. However, exams were fair.
Dr. Sparling is an amazing professor. He uses humour to keep students engaged throughout the lecture. The course starts off very easy but picks up substantially halfway through. As long as you study the more difficult content sufficiently, the exam is fairly average difficulty.
Dr. Sparling was very approachable for this course, but I found the material quite tedious. He is willing to answer questions outside of class and his email responses are great! The lecture slides are very text-heavy so focus on big picture ideas and if you aren't sure whether u need to know something for the exam, ask him. Overall, a decent prof!
Sparling is the goat. he is very kind, knowledgeable, caring, and passionate about what he teaches. he inspires people to apply their knowledge, and not just memorize. the bad reviews are honestly people who havent broken out of that mold
Hard to follow in class, and goes on tangents. Others find him good, but he is a bad prof and it's hard to stay engaged in his class. I wish there were better options to take this course with esp after MBIO1 with Diana & MBIO2 with Damien.
His train of thought is hard to follow, made it hard for me to attend class regularly. His classes were boring and not engaging esp after taking MBIO1 with Diana and MBIO2 with Damien Rivers.
Lectures were all over the place, and his exams were difficult. I wish there was anyone else to take this course with. He incorporates really random research into his slides (including his own research). Makes it difficult to understand what's going on half the time.
Professor Sparling is passionate about the material and makes the lectures engaging. The tests are challenging but fair - just make sure to use Unstuck AI and stay on top of the content.
which I understood. I think he is hilarious. He is so kind, caring and makes lectures interesting even if the material isn't. First portion is the hardest and it gets easier and very interesting. We didn't even have to do calculations just know what the equation variables mean.
3032 is a super intense course, it picks up a lot near the end with biochemical pathways (though they were barely tested on the final). Make sure to do the practice midterm in DEPTH wink wink. I would try to avoid the course unless you really need it since it requires a lot of work, biochem 2 is a prereq for a reason. I also found it quite boring.
