BEST CLASS I EVER TOOK, Amazing teacher, but you have to know your stuff
I thought it was easy, but everyone else failed
Hard tests. Boring Lectures. A class you dont even want to show up because you know your grade is so low.
He lacks communication skills and does not involve students in his class. He just stands in the front of the room and very boringly lectures.
LIES - you have to pay attention b/c he involves everyone constantly. If you're not interested in the material, DON'T TAKE THE CLASS
He sucks as a Gateway professor. He doesn't give homework and papers back until the end of the semester so u cannot know if u r doing ur work well and by the time u know u can't improve anymore. DO NOT TAKE HIM!
They are not LIES. He didn't ask me one question through out the WHOLE semester, so how can anyone say that he involves the whole class? He would casually brush off any questions or comments with no DIRECT answers.
COCKY, never interrupt him, pretend he's god and he'll love you. Very TRUE about not giving your papers back until the end of the class.
He got lotta knowledge. But, if you have some attitude problem, don't take his class. But still nice professor. Recommended.
Stupid people WILL fail.
Maybe for the gateway & econ 200 classes he may be boring but not for econ 160. He involves the whole class, he's even getting to know everyone's name, it's a night class for 3 hrs. but it flies by. he can b difficult if u don't pay attention. great prof.
Good teacher, recommended for Bus 301. But if you do wanna easy B (for somepeople, it is the best grade!) don't take him. If you do learn from him, your lotta activities will be paid off!!!
Terrible Professor. He trys to show how smart he is with his Econ jargon munble jumble. I hated his class, it was a good sleep session, and his exams were far beyond easy.
Best teacher I ever had, very clear with powerpoints, gives you lectures and outlines, nice guy, interesting.
do the work and expect a B no papers are returned EVER
Wow. I am shocked to hear so many negative comments. I only had him for Econ 160, and i enjoyed it immensely. We never had any papers due, but he always gave us our tests back right away. I actually understood the material when he explained it.
Best econ prof in the department. Explains things very clearly and is a very fair tester. If you don't do well, it's the subject, not him.
Not sure if he still teaches BUS301 but the guy is known to be a tuff grader. Pretty nice guy IF you treat him with respect--he use to be with the air force so he doesn't like students who clown around.
I wasn't in his section, but the guy really knows his ****. Very clear and streight to the point. Kind of tough grader though. Don't try to argue with him, especially over Econ, 'cause he'll eat you alive!!! In general, very good as a teacher.
I had Tontz for Econ 311, and by far that is the greatest class I've ever taken. I'm an Econ minor, so I enjoyed every minute of it. He's very smart and funny and strict but awesome professor overall.
Best Econ 310 teacher you can take. Tests are hard, but it can be done. Explains the material very well. Don't buy the book, since the tests are from his notes. Best part of all - No graphs! Study and take good notes, and you will do good in this class
Had him for Gateway. He's soo funny!
he is good as long as he knows your name as soon as he remembers your name you get a good grade
Very clear, go to the point. Good professor. Fair with the grades. But you have to study hard. you presentation is very important. Trate him with respect and work hard. Talk more during the class and you will be fine. I got A.
He is very fun and full of energy. Seems to enjoy teaching very much. He makes me want to come to class. Very helpful and very friendly. Recommended
He is very knowledgable. His multiple choices are very hard. If you want to get an A, you must study very hard. He is very nice and he tries to make the class as fun as possible.
great teacher!!! really knowledgable, very helpful. Relates to and actually cares about his students.
Treats students in a very respectful and professional manner. Expects the same attitude in the class. His lectures are deep and funny at the same time.
Great teacher. Has a grasp on all the information and knows how to make you understand it. Very professional, grades on a curve you cant not like, and teaches you some outside the box stuff that will keep you interested in the lecture. Take him if you can
Struck me as just a little too smug and even somewhat irresponsible; late to lectures, slow in returning papers, etc. Slept through the few lectures I attended, but read the book and hit his online notes (which cover his lectures)hard. Got an A.
Definitely the worst professor I've had so far. Very unprofessional, late to class, arrogant, and basically a jerk. Picked favorites throughout the class, never returned assignments, and was extremely unhelpful during office hours. AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!
He's a nice guy outside of the classroom, but not the best instructor for this course. He never turns back assignments so you haven't a clue as to how you're doing in the class until it is too late. Plus...he is totally anal! His grading scale is absolutely ridiculous. Glad this class is OVER!!!
Very nice person, but simply not a good teacher! If you want to learn avoid taking him. Not professional at all, does not return your email (or 3 weeks later if he does). The all experience was absolutely disappointed for someone that was eager to learn, can i have my money back??????
What a nice guy but unfortunately no so professional. Turned in 5 projects during the semester, we never saw them again so you had no idea whether it's good what you're doing...it's a "guess" you get an A or D.
HARD TEST!no need to come to class because all on the power point! not recommended! he talk so fast as if everybody understand!
really cares about the course, and students' performance...can be a tough grader but is fair. Just participate a lot in class and you should do fine...he'll notice your efforts which will reflect your grade. Our group thought we were doing really bad but our grades we're actually pretty good.
Really good teacher, makes this borning class a little better. Be very descriptive and clear on your case write-ups though, he marks down for not being detailed enough.
he is a great teacher !!! The best experience i had so far in CSUN! So witty and smart...he turned this borring class into something so interesting and educating. He encourages participation, makes funny comments...He gives alot of business practical advices! Very helpful! I'll miss this class for sure..... A+++++++
Excellent Professor. Lectures are very clear and are also very interesting. Not a lot of HW, just a few assignments and a small project. Test are not easy, but are not impossible. If you study your notes, you can do well on the test. He creates his notes, they are powerpoints. Very good professor. I hope he will teach more econ classes that i need.
I had this dude in 2000. He was cool and a no bullsh*t kind of guy. He knew his macroeconomics well and I learned a lot being in his class.

Teacher is very organized, answers questions, funny ass jokes, and is very logical/practical. No idealism, down to earth and very realistic. Im taking him for 161, and i hear he teaches the Upper (300) classes too.. im definately gonna take him. If you dont like econ, take tontz. Trust me, youre going to love him ^_^
Logical, practical, funny, and great applications examples. He is not idealistic, confusing, and answers all questions. If you ask a stupid question, youll get flamed. Definately a great teacher, even for those who hate econ. If you do, trust me, take him, youll learn to like it. Econ is by far the best class in my preferences!!!
This teacher would have made a great actor on sienfield, he's very funny. As for the class study the vocabulary and the grpahs and you will do well on the tests
i guess this is a chill class.. but ehh .. its econ
Great preparation, very good lecturer, makes a boring subject more interesting by using real-life examples. Easy-going and entertaining, a very good instructor.
If you hate working in groups, you'll hate this class even more. You will have students in your group that just ride your coattails and there is nothing you can do about it.Get used to it.Very knowledgeable, very good communicator.Sucks at releasing graded papers, cases or final grades-still am waiting for 2 out of 4 case grades. Final grades out?NOT
Really bad in returning graded papers. Has a bit of a chip on his shoulder. Pain in the rear throughout the entire semester. I swear you will not have a life for the entire semester if you take him. He knows his stuff, but gives way too much work. Thats even worse when you can't get your paper back to see how you did on it.
He had a cool personality. But the funny thing is, we never received a single grade on anything back until the last day of the semester. Other than that, it was a pretty easy class. Just make sure youre in a good and fun group, and youre almost guaranteed a B.
He was a cool Professor. His test are a little hard. The class is a breeze just as long as you pay attention to his lectures and class notes. (it's like that with every class!)
His tests are pretty hard, but he curves them by a lot. I would rarely go to his class and I got a "c" He's really nice and funny but I would never understand what he was talking about in class. I would try to listen but then I just ended up day dreaming. I think I did pretty good for always day dreaming in his class.
He takes forever to return papers, so you don't know how to improve as you go through the semester. I got a good grade so I guess it didn't really matter. You should worry more about the group you get stuck with rather than the professor you take. If you want to do good in the class, be prepared to pick up the slack for freeloaders in the group.
If professors read this, you need to do something about the freeloaders you pass off on the hardworkers in groups.Don't give us the BS that we'll have to deal with people like that in the real world.BS.Those morons would be fired if even ever hired.302 worst class ever.Hardest B you'll ever get. Suck the life from u. Tontz fine, group method sucks.

Real cool teacher. Explains concepts very well
He is a nightmare! I Despise him! DO NOT TAKE HIM. I worked sooooo hard in his class, did everything I was supposed to do, and he still failed me. One of the worst I have ever met!
He is a really good professor. He puts effort into helping us understand concepts rather than memorizing. He curves too. If you really want to learn from this class, he is your man.
Amusing teacher. Masters the subject. Terrific examples. One of the few professors that make you think

Excellent professsor! Very personalble!! He is very interested in helping you understand the material! Lectures are very interesting and he relates econ to real life examples. Must take him for Econ 310!!!!!
He is very personable and nice. However, the classes were quire disorganized, students did not know what was going on. As everyone has stated, nothing was given back to the students in a timely manner. We were working on the 3rd project when we found out how we did on the first one.
Had him for 3 straight semesters. Love this guy to death. Relates material to real live examples. Will literally stop in his lecture to answer a question and backtrack. Passing back material is.. er... very bad. But besides that, class is very good. Majority of test info is from his slides. If you wanna easily ace it, read the chapters (arent long)
Tontz is the best econ professor in comparison to the others. His lectures are interesting and he uses fun examples that relate to the material. However, his exams are HARD. Make sure to study all of the slides, and take good notes. He uses T/F, MC, short answer and calculations on his tests. So be prepared.
I didn't like him at all! Besides that he is a very hard grader, he doesn't give papers back and he has attitude. Yeah, fun jokes, but this is not what I pay for. I won't recommend him for BUS 302.
don't know
never gives back papers on time! i didnt know what i was getting in the class till the last day cuz thats when he gave most our papers back...he is pretty hard! i tried hard but got a B- in the class :(
Very cool guy, very funny, and he knows his stuff extremely well. He took 4 weeks to return a MC midterm, but for each week he gave extra credit points. Tests are kinda hard but there is a lot of material to help you study. I went by the notes only and did good in the class. Take this class, its easier than the rest. Also gives lots of extra credit
He is hard. Struggled throughout the semester but still passed the class with a C.
Very good Professor. Knows his stuff. I agree it takes him weeks to return the tests. Overall, not an easy class. Failed the first test, got an A on the second midterm. Messed up on the final in my opinion, and I got a B in the class. I would really recommend him.
Really knows his stuff. Funny. Never lets you go early. Good professor! Hard tests. Study and you'll be fine. Take him
Good professor. True his tests are a little hard but thats why you have to know the information. He really makes you think and he applies the information to the real world. Also very funny.
horrible teacher, you get no feedback from him, total waste of time.
Incredible, well structured, easy to understand lectures are ruined by unfairly difficult test- questions are structured to trick you or confuse you. He has a great personality but tests ruin everything. Half the class fails his test- does not take roll, no real homework and only an easy paper due at semester end. WATCH OUT FOR HIS UNFAIR TESTS!!!!
I would never take Tontz again! Attendance was not mandatory but he cancelled many classes without notice which was frustrating. Lectures seemed to be a repeat from econ 160 but tests were extremely hard. He has a slight curve but nothing that will save you dramatically. I would avoid taking him if you can..
I'm an A student & about to graduate. In my entire life I've never encountered a prof. so clearly aiming 2 fail you. No matter how much you study, his tests will leave you demoralized. Ultimately, it's his own failure (he's been teaching too long and has lost touch with realistic expectations). My advice: TAKE SOMEONE ELSE OR YOU'LL REGRET IT.
He's not as bad as everyone says. Econ is hard, but if you study and know his powerpoints, you'll do fine. The final is a little tricky but the curve helps out a lot. He has a really good personality and he'll keep you interested. Good professor overall.
i think you should read the reviews- he got good review for like bus 302 but he is horrible economics teacher. why are the test so impossible to pass? I wihs I had paid attention to the bad scores cause they are for econ- yeah his nice but he should test on what he teaches. I don't even think he could pass his own tests. Why is he so hard on us????
there is no doubt he has knowledge about economy however he does not know how to teach and how to create tests. If you want to loose your interest in that subject take him he will make sure you finish the class with much of a hate for economy subject. his tests are extremely tricky, buying book was just waste of money. DO NOT TAKE HIM.
This professor had very interesting lectures...too bad his tests were not based off of the lectures! He gives out a topical review for each exam, but fails to mention that each exam is cumulative. Many people in my class failed the first two exams! He requires 3 exams, and a paper. It's a toss up choosing between Ng or Tontz for 308.
I agree, the tests were hard because each was cummulative (meaning you had to study all material covered since the beggining for every test in order to pass each test!!) and he did not mention this at all- that made my grade suffer too. He really is a nice guy but for Econ 308, he really messed up on all the students. =( not recommended.
Ok, here is the truth about Tontz. The comments are true below in that his lectures do not help for the tests, but if you look at powerpoint points he gives out then you should at least pass the class. He is a very smart guy but hard. He does not take roll but participation in class helps out your grade more than you think! Take him if u study lots
It was a fun class but he is definitely not playing around. He is a very tough grader and you have to put in your time, in class and out. Its true that either he loves you or hates you but once he makes up his mind on you, its hard to change it.
Be disciplined, make sure your team meets constantly and keep up with. Material is not difficult, but the workload makes this class hard. Professor Tontz made class fun and you can tell he enjoys teaching. Bus 302 prepares you for the future. Hardest A and most also the most satisfying A that I have ever earned.
Yes his lectures are interesting, he does have a sense of humor, but he doesnt test you on what he lectures, or even whats on the outline. I have never FAILED a class, but I failed this one. Tests are VERY tricky, he said so himself; tests you on material not covered. Lots of students did bad in this class. Not recommended if ur trying to graduate!
I really like this professor because he keeps the class alert. His teaching style is very impresive, power point and classnotes,as well as topical reviews. He has relevant stories that make you understand a hard subject better.
Terrible teacher. if you want a teacher to come 10 minutes late, takes him 15min to setup his computer then 15min review what he has covered last week then only 25min of lecture which was a review mat. from previous Econ class, then take him. otherwise i don't recommend him. final was very very hard with no review material as to what to study.
I think that he's a very good professor and knows the subject very well. Crystal clear explanations with good examples and a good sense of humor. Make sure you do the Aplia assignments and read the chapters, and the tests should be no problem. Not that difficult to get A, just do your share of the work, don't just rely on lectures. Attend weekly.
Tontz is great! Has notes for every class. Tests are right off the notes. Two midterms, both T/F, MC, and short answer. One final, not easy, but graded accordingly. All tests are curved. He reviews every class, and answers all questions. Gives extra credit. Tontz has an awesome personality, easy to get along with. Makes class fun. Take him! A+
Cool professor. Great teacher. Good examples. Extremely clear. Reviews every class and answers all questions. Tests are very fair. Final is hard, T/F and M/C, but don't worry he grades on a curve. Gives extra credit. He is funny and keeps the class alive. Take Him!!! Awesome guy!!!!
If you want an honest rating, read mine. The guy is a genious! If you want to achieve in life, take him. SOOO helpful. I got an "A" in the class after the extra credits. He will randomly ask who wants extra credit so be prepared to raise your hand. BUS302 is generally a hard class so don't expect anything easy, but he is the one you must take!
Great prof!! He makes class interesting. Gateway is a lot of work but this is the prof to go with. You won't be disappointed. He gives a lot of extra credit and he is very sweet.
Great professor for Gateway & Econ. Excellent lecturer, opens each session with a capsule review that gets you oriented. Explanations & examples are entertaining & really clarify the material. Very open to questions. Also provides detailed notes that really help for test prep. Tests are difficult but fair & only cover what he said they would.
Very interesting class. You definitely need to study for the tests, mostly from his classnotes, not the book.
Great teacher and a great overall guy. Gives relevant, easy to remember examples to help learn the material. WARNING: Do not take him if your MicroEcon skills are weak. If they are you will be destroyed. Otherwise just follow along with the slides and the book and you'll be cool.
HIS LECTURES WERE EXTREMELY BORING, MADE IT HARD TO PAY ATTENTION! HIS EXAMS WERE VERY HARD..BUT HE'S NICE! BUT WHAT A HARD PROFESSOR!
i dont know what people are talking about. professor tontz is an extremely hard grader. he looks at a B as "EXCELLENT". took him for winter and hated him. he said he was going to be easy with grading but lied. VERY TOUGH GRADER!
terrible terrible teahcer, very hard grader, (no wonder he doesn't teach 308 anymore, maybe they just realized he doesn't know how to teach & grade and all he knows is to talk)
I thought Mr Tontz gave excellent examples that helped me retain the information he was teaching. I found it to be a difficult class, but it was my first Economics class. I think that without the examples he gave a lot of the material would be much more abstract and harder to retain. I enjoyed his class.
Best Teacher! His lectures have a flow to it. The tests are hard but he gives a topical review, and that helps you alot. Do the hw, go to class, listen to his lectures, and study really hard for the tests. His curves are big, and he is a great teacher. I never liked Econ before I took his class. One of the best teachers in CSUN
HORRIBLE PROFESSOR!! VERY HARD GRADER!! DO NOT TAKE!! SPARE YOURSELF THE TROUBLE. HE'S VERY COCKY AND SELF-CENTERED. GETS VERY DEFENSIVE IF YOU QUESTION A GRADE. YOU CAN WORK AS HARD AS YOU WANT, BUT YOU WON'T GET AND A- YOU END UP WITH A B- OR C+ GOOD LUCK!
While I understand that teachers need to be alittle tough in order to control the class, I believe Mr. Tontz is way too rude. He easily insults his students with and without reason. you feel you are in a prison. other than that, he is very committed to teach, and does his best to do so.
Not a great teacher. If you just need to take this class as a requirement go ahead and take it. If you study his study guides and pay attention you'll pass. However if u want to learn dont take him for econ. Im an econ major and got a B but i still dont know jack about econ.
I wouldnt recommend Prof. Tontz. He is rude & condescending. You will NEVER receive an assignment back on time, you'll never know your grade in the class. You can work as hard as you want, but you'll NEVER get an A on an assignment. He gets defensive when u question a grade & you can complain about him but no one will ever do anything about it.
Prof Tontz is a REALLY REALLY hard grader. He doesn't allow you to give your team members a 10 on performance unless you explain y they deserve it. You can address all the problems you have in your group to him but he'll never do anything about it. He's uptight, mean and very rude. DON'T TAKE HIM!! Save yourself the hassle and take someone easier!
Professor Tontz was very helpful. It was a challenging class though. Learned a lot.
Prof Tontz is a great guy. He tries to help you out as much as he can in the class and gives you honest feedback. The class is very hard, but he tries to make it as easy as BUS 302 can be. I definitely recommend him for Gateway.
It doesn't matter who your professor is, Gateway is a really hard class. Prof Tontz is very demanding which is good as he is coaching you for real life. He is helpful, but he is a hard grader, so don't expect to A's everything buy just doing the work, that's not enough. Do your work, hope for a good team, and good luck. Good professor!
Mean, condensing and not helpful. This class is a waste of time for Pace Students.
Extremely difficult class. Tests are really hard. The average grade for exams was low C's and D's. You have to study your butt off if you want to pass.
Great professor! Extreme high level of knowledge, his great humor and jokes makes the class even more fun, and you will learn alot if that is why you attend this class. It is one of the hardest classes I have taken but prof. Tontz does a great job in making sure everybody can understand and follow the material.
This class is one of the hardest classes i've taken at csun. Had a C average until the final which is 40% of your grade, and ultimately made me fail the class.
Extremely hard class. By far the hardest classes I have taken at CSUN. Tests are really hard and you have to know the subject very well to even pass with a C. Got a D on firt midtern, C on second midterm and ended up with a C in the class. The final is worth 40%, so that can make you or break you. Good luck, you will really need it!!!!!
Great teacher with a good sense of humour. Hard class but a very interesting one. Posts lectures online as well as notes and study guides for the exam which are helpful. Its a fun class. This guy deserves a chili pepper to0!
Love this guy! Helpful, not just about the subject but teaches you life lessons(how to invest money in the future, and how to be successful! Subject is obviously not an easy one, but he makes it as clear as possible!
Entertaining as well as informative. Class kept lively with real world applications used to reinforce lessons. Subject matter difficult but every effort made to ensure it being understood. Test study guides provided. Do the work and you'll do well plus you will not dread attending.
He is entertaining and tries to make the subject as easy as possible, of course the class is super hard but he is helpful and gives many examples
Has examples for every single concept that help you fully understand what he means. It's not an easy class but he has been the best professor I have had yet. He is extremely knowledgeable in this subject and explains everything you need to know. You HAVE to study in this course and though attendance is not mandatory it helps a lot. Best Professor
Prof. Tontz is an experienced teacher. He makes a hard subject seem feasible. You don't have to purchase the book or read from it if you do, as long as you attend his lectures which really help you grasp the material. He provides plenty of real-life examples for many economic concepts. Take his class.
BEST TEACHER EVER! VERY EASY "A". JUST GOTTA GET ON HIS GOOD SIDE. HIGHLY RECOMMEND TAKING HIM FOR GATEWAY NO OTHER TEACHER CAN COMPARE!! -T
great class. loves what he is teaching. great class i spent little time on my class work and still got a good grade. take him!
Great Professor. Good and interesting lectures. For the 1st 3rd of the class I didnt even take my book out of its packaging, because it was all econ 160 review. So its easy to pass the 1st midterm. Know "Tranactions Costs" that was the only tricky question on the 1st exam.
I cannot understand any of the comments.. Yes it's a hard class and he MAKES it ridiculous! It's like he set out to fail the majority of the class. Ive never had a teacher that had to curve so much because of how bad everyone did.. must say something about him too. He is very demeaning and rude. so suck up because he has his favorites.
If you want to actually learn something in this class then forget about it, it was his exact way or the highway. The semester is over and he hasn't even returned half of our assignments. His teaching is less than helpful, he's conceited, not open to anything. You either have it easy by being on his good side, or u suffer, no matter how hard u try
When you're divorced 3 times that should say something about you - this dude does not care about anything, especially his students. Does not return homework, frequently misses class, VERY hard grader. In his eyes no one is good enough. The ONLY way to get through this class is by being his pet and sucking up. NOT recommended for gateway
Econ is not easy - but loved his class! One of few to get an A, but he curves tests and gives real life examples. Go to office hours/look like you're interested! 2 midterms/1 final.Multiple choice & T/F. Best teacher at CSUN for lower level Econ. Textbook helps but all you really need is good notes! Funny guy that makes the class interesting =)
This class has by far been the most stressful to study for. You'll have 2 midterms worth 20% each, a few homework assignments (takes a lot of time to complete) worth 20%, and a final worth 40%. The teacher is really funny and curves the test but the material you learn in class and what you do for homework seem totally different from the test.
I thought he was a good teacher, he was entertaining too. He has all the power points and chapter notes available online. Sometimes his lectures are a little confusing, but the weekly homework/reading helped me understand. His tests really aren't that hard, and they're curved.
BORING MATERIAL &PROFESSOR! MAKE SURE U DO ALL THE ONLINE WORK ON TIME & TRY YOUR BEST TO TEACH YOURSELF THE MATERIAL. DONT COUNT ON THE LECTURES BECAUSE YOU'LL PROBABLY BE ASLEEP DURING THEM
Great professor, very knowledgeable specially in economics.professor has a real world business experience. i f you really want to learn take this professor i would recommend it to anyone...
Good guy! Cares about his students as individuals. He grades hard but if u put the effort in, you will get an A. He takes forever to give back graded work but he makes up for it with extra points. LOVE HIM! take him!
Good guy! Really cares about his students as individuals. Totally recommend him. I put in the effort and got an A. Only thing is he takes forever to get graded assignments back to u, but he makes up for it with extra point. Take him!
he wants everyone involved in the class. he creates a positive atmoshere. great professor take him
Coach Tontz is a great professor and really tries hard to get everyone involved. The class is a lot of work, but achieving an A is definitely possible. I highly recommend him.
I am very thankful I took this class with Tontz. He makes it applicable to real business scenarios and has given me presentation pointers that I have used in many classes. If you have issues with group members, he doesn't choose sides but rather defuses the situation. He is always available for help and really shows students he cares! Take him!!!
You have about 7 papers to write, but don't bother trying. If you are a hot girl just suck up to him & you will get an A. He basically bases his entire grading on class participation..doesn't return ANY work (until after the semester is over), not helpful. He only rewards people who worship the ground he walks on. Class canceled most of the time.
He's a nice guy. He doesn't take attendace, so I never showed up to class. The material was not easy and I ended up failing. But I don't blame him. He's just kinda boring.
Awesome Professor! Seriously one of the best professors at CSUN. You will learn alot if you take it serious. He takes a professional manner which makes you learn how it is in the business world. Highly recommend him! You won't be sorry, unless if your a slacker.
I thought he was a great teacher up to mid semester. After that, he did not return our papers and the grade became as a surprise. Do not take him, he definetly plays favoritism
professor Tontz is one of the best instructors ever. he is really clear and gives us lots of helpful examples.
Lots and lots of Homework and group projects, way too much!! Is not considerate of students taking other classes, however that being said fairly easy if you focus in and roll up your sleeves. Get ready to polish your presenting skills because youll present something almost always when class meets. Picking a GOOD group is vital to passing.
He canceled class a lot. The material isn't easy, so make sure you read and understand the textbook. His lectures are boring, and the exams don't relate to the homework online. He's a very nice guy, but this class just requires a lot of self effort.
He canceled class a lot. Lectures made me fall asleep and the material is hard to understand. The online homework was different than the stuff we learned in class.
He's a good lecturer but yes he did cancel class a lot. The material is hard, especially all the graphs and etc. Good news is none of his tests feature graphs or calculations. You are mostly tested on terminology and theory. Getting a C is not hard but I agree you have to be self taught to do well in his class. Attendance not mandatory.
This professor is so passionate & sweet! I can honestly say I had no interest whatsoever in Economy (I needed it for MKT) and came to class knowing it was going to be hard. However, I did attend all lectures, read and did the hw. I got a C in the 1st exam, WORKED even harder and ended up with an A in class. Study and ask a lot of questions!
He is one of the better econ 160 professors at CSUN. Its no doubt a tough course. It has a failing rate of 50%. He cares about what he's teaching and has worked for firms before so he teaches from experience aside from the text. He got mad at me for not participating in the hand raising thing he does in class hence can be a bit egotistical.
Professor Tontz is AMAZING! He is extremely helpful and gives examples that students can relate to. Econ is a tough subject to grasp, but he makes it fun and interesting! I highly recommend taking his class. Additionally, his Gateway videos helped me immensely with my tests! A+ professor!
So far my favorite professor. He is knowledgeable of everything he lectures in class. He likes to make the class more of a discussion of the material and uses real life examples to help us better understand the subject on hand. His tests are on the class lectures as well as the materials covered in the book. I recommend him for all econ classes.
He's a decent professor, but he's not well suited to the hybrid class format. He often forgot to post the lectures, class notes, and homework assignments online. But I would take him again in a normal class.
Great professor. Class is not easy and tests are hard but he knows his stuff. Attendance is not mandatory but definitely read the book
Professor Tontz is excellent. Pay attention and go to class, you will learn and enjoy fully.
The class is not easy, but it is curved. the test questions are directly from the book, so if you read the book and comprehend it, you will do well. His lectures are also pretty helpful and informative. the only problem was that he gave online quizzes that were sometimes only open for half a day and if you dont catch it in time you get a zero
Mostly self study. The lectures are somewhat helpful, but going to class is not mandatory. Read the book and understand the concepts. He didn't post online assignments on time, but the curve is big.
He is a nice guy but he's not good with the hybrid format..he would post assignments late and I would have no idea that they were due at some random day until the last minute..he also goes off tangent a lot in class...making going to class pointless ...he is a good professor though and I do like his videos..
TONTZ knows his stuff. Good guy explains well. If u go to office he will help. His slides and class notes he gives are enough. Don't buy the book, he never uses it. No HW one paper, 3 tests including final. Exams are hard. My C matched the effort I put in.
Tontz has recorded lectures with ppt and notes for theory. Class meetings adds real world information and discussion. Gives clear reviews for midterms and final. Knows his stuff and enjoys teaching. Great attitude.
Never went to class, didn't study, thought I might not pass and ended up with a B. Try harder than me and you'll probably get an A since he grades with a really generous curve.
TIP: The first two tests don't have graphs/equations. Its mainly definitions and concepts of economics. The review sheet he posts only has like 1/5th of the test so don't study only that. Review the chapters on the test and memorize terms/concepts. His lectures and videos help, although I believe the book helps more. Still, he is a good professor.
This class is a hybrid class so its half online half class. Professor Tontz is by far one of the best Econ professors I have had at CSUN he makes the class interesting & uses real life situations. He cares about his students and wants all to succeed. Power points & video lectures are posted on moodle but also read the book & you will do great.
Tontz is great professor who really cares if students understand the material. I definitely recommend him.
I made the mistake of relying on his lecture instead of focusing on the textbook. Read the textbook thoroughly, understand the graphs, and then look through his notes. Basically study on your own and if you need help go to tutoring not him.
The reason students pass this class is because of the curve. The midterms and final are difficult. There are online quizzes as well which are worth alot of points. Do well on those, he drops the 3 lowest scores. If you need help, its best you go see a tutor and not him. His classes are pointless since you can watch his video lectures on Moodle.
Professor Tontz has a great attitude and cares about his students learning. The course is a hybrid with prerecorded lectures on theory, and class discussion applying the theory to todays events. Well organized with published powerpoints, classnotes, topical reviews for midterms and finals. Weekly quizzes test applications. Highly recommend.
Great Professor. Read the book and you'll do fine online and on the tests. He give you notes, power point, even a lecture video a few days before class. The tools are there for you to succeed, but its on you to look over them and do well.
Wow i swear everyone who gave this guy bad reviews probably never went to class. Amazing teacher with a passion for economics. Stop being lazy and show up to the class and you're bound to pass. He gives a nice curve and if you still fail after that, then its all on you for not putting in any effort. He cares about his students.
Great teacher who cares about his students if you want to actually learn. He talks about his personal experiences. Jokes around with the class keeping it interesting. He is always willing to help if you ask. Its an easy going class, especially if your an Econ major. Great teacher, had fun. Tests are not too hard, all lecture and doesnt use book.
Interesting subject. The professor is very knowledgable. His use of power points instead of writing & drawing things on the board made it difficult to connect his lectures to the slides. The course would be much better as a lecture or online but not mixed. 2 midterms, 1 final (based off of lecture) Aplia online homework based on textbook.
TAKE MY ADVICE. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS. Disorganized, cancels class then changes his mind, you will get affected. Instead of a written assignment he made us to do a full resume (CV). Post one thing on moodle then he change his mind and make alterations. This was the worst summer of my life. Also, this is my first time writing about a professor.
This is the second course I have taken with him. He is an exceptional professor, he explains the material very clearly. His tests are worded a little funny, but once you learn how he asks questions they are pretty easy. Pay attention to the way he says things in class and you will do fine. You shouldn't need the textbook. He is good with emails too
Professor Tontz is a fantastic teacher. He genuinely loves his subject and this can been seen in how he teaches. His grading is extremely fair and the work load is reasonable. I took his course during summer 2014 at CSUN. Due to Summer session only being 5 weeks, if a majority of students missed a test question, it wouldn’t count against you.
I've had Prof Tontz for 307, 308, and 310. His teaching method is very consistent throughout all of his courses. Tests are hard, but he grades on a curve, so a C turns into an A. Two midterms and one paper for all of his classes. Definitely recommend!
I love Prof. Tontz! He is very passionate about his teaching and relates all the material to his experience and current events. Econ 161 was a hybrid class and had 3 midterms. Econ 308 had 3 midterms and a resume. His test are based mostly on what he talks about in class and you should be able to analyze the material a step further.
Very good Professor.
Don't take his hybrid class. His lectures are boring and repeats what he says for his online lectures. Some of the stuff he says is on the homework. His tests are hard but he does give a big curve which is the only good part of his class. Other than that I wouldn't suggest taking his class. I also when to class everyday, horrible.
Took his hybrid class. In person lectures very similar to online lectures. Basically repeats the same info. Aplia assignments were very frustrating, because it included questions about concepts he did not go over in class. curves tests. Read the book! It helps a lot!
i really enjoyed his lectures, he is very knowledgeable and takes his time to give interesting examples. His tests are hard, but he grades on a curve. I enjoyed his class and i would take him again.
He reads from his power points but tells you a story for every other slide. They actually apply though so its easier to remember. Gave 2 Midterms and 1 Final, that was it. And he curves a lot. I would definitely recommend him.
Prof. Tontz 's class has been a fantastic learning activity ! Provides Classnotes, Powerpoints , recorded lectures, reviews for exams, self-help quizzes. He relates the materials to current events, and his personal business experience. The hybrid format cuts classroom time in half, and you can view recorded lectures when you want. Great Professor!
A hybrid class Horrible horrible horrible!! Did my best and ended up with a C Boring lectures and videos. Tests are hard and the final exam was a killer. 2 tests and one cumulative final. Aplia counts as 15%
I took him for Spring 2012 and this professor is mixed. It is a hybrid course, so we have less class time and more time to do our work and to catch up. His exams are difficult and only reason why people pass is because he curves the grades. His PowerPoint and lecture videos are online. Can be disorganized, but he is a great professor.
Stay away form this Hyprid class. Tests are hard and not from the Book he actually uses his own made up questions from different sources. Take 161 with another teacher. You are going to thank me at the end ! Good luck
Love this man. Straight forward lectures, fairly difficult exams. If you put an effort to learn the economic theory as opposed to memorizing the material you can easily score an A or B. Attendance isn't mandatory but don't expect to get a good grade if you don't show up
Professor Tontz is a very knowledgeable and sweet guy. His hybrid class consists of online homework through Aplia, online lecture videos, and in-class meeting once a week. I recommend reading the book and watching the online lectures BEFORE class meeting, although it can be a little time-consuming.
Very clear and simple, class is engaging and entertaining I enjoyed his lectures. The exams are very difficult so study carefully but if you put in the effort you can get an A!
DO NOT rely on his study guides. Probably half of what's there doesn't come on the midterms and final. You MUST read the book if you want to pass. At the beginning he'll tell you to not rely much on the textbook but DON'T listen to him. You'll need the textbook material for the aplia quizzes and the exams.
hybrid class half online half in person. He has recordings of every lecture on moodle, and he delivers half of those lectures in class. You could just show up on test days and watch all the lectures online (attendance not required). 2 tests, 1 research project, 1 final, no Homework. Test 1 based on lectures, test 2 & final from textbook and lectur
Overall, clear and knowledgeable professor. You need the book for the Aplia quizzes, but focus on his powerpoints to do well on the exams. Make sure you pay attention in class because he gives examples of what will show up on the exam.
Hes a terrible professor, he cancels classes often and has canceled two classes right before an exam. His lectures doesn't make sense most of the time. It's already november almost to the end of the semester and i haven't learned anything
Grade is based on 3 tests which have nothing to do with the study outline he gives. The lectures are not clear on the subjects, and don't coincide with his power points which don't coincide with the tests. Don't take him if you are looking to understand this course, or pass with a medium amount of work.
One of the best professors I've had. He really knows what he's talking about and his exams aren't that hard if you re-read the book at least twice. He does curve and helps out as much as he can.
He's an awesome guy that can make any topic sound interesting. If you do the assigned reading and attend class, you'll be fine. Reading is a huge help understanding topics and it really isn't too much. His exams make up the bulk of the grade and some things he mentions in lectures are not mentioned in the book, so I recommend going to the lectures.
You HAVE TO understand the course, memorizing is not for this class. His lectures are high quality, full of realistic examples, and very organized. Best part of this class is that he records the lectures, provides notes for you on moodle so you can later rewatch'em. Read the book prior if you wanna make your life easier. Not easy but not impossible
i'm continuing my comment (below), if you think he's boring, it's not cuz of him, it's probably the subject, cuz there is lot of theory. He's a really good guy, and would be glad to help someone who cares to learn the subject. He teaches at USC, and I can tell how his lectures are much better quality-wise, than many others I've heard before. Reccom
His class was really boring, the majority of students playing with their phone/laptop while he is giving his lecture. The only reason students were attending is because he gives some answers, but if you have a friend just take the answer and do not attend the class at all. difficult tests and not straightforward. I do not recommend to be honest.
Took his class during the Summer, got mid-40's on the two midterms, highest grades on both in the class were 80/100. Cumulative MC only final and research paper -- ended up getting a C. Test questions come from lecture/online notes. Not math intensive AT ALL -- basic math used. Qualitative research paper. Easiest 310 econ professor imo.
Professor Tontz's amazing! I took his Econ 310 Hybrid Class for Summer 2017. There's a LOT of material. However? Tontz NEVER leaves his students guessing, as to what material will be on his exams. ALL the materials that you'll need to do well, will be on Moodle (video lectures, Topic Review Lists, Powerpoint Slides).
Professor Tontz has 3 exams in the semester and grades harshly on them. His exams are based of powerpoints, class notes, and live lectures but, when you take the actual exam it's confusing because what you study doesn't match up with whats on the exam. His study guides are no help and he is just an overall tough grader.
Professor Tontz is a decent person and is very good in using computers. He posts all lectures so you don't need to attend classes but if attend you will get a chance of knowing several answers from midterms or final. He clearly states what you need to do in the beginning of the semester in order to succeed. I would definitely recommend him.
Professor Tontz lacks the ability to simplify material. He tries to illustrate the material by giving examples, which fail when he goes into rants. He considers people who have money smarter than everyone else. Glances over class material during lectures, and exams do not match the videos or his study guides. Take him at your own risk.
I took this class because of the high reviews here. The only reason he has a high score is because its a super easy class. I didnt really learn anything new or meaningful in that class. I was really looking forward to taking it, but I personally dont just take a class just to get an A, I actually wanna learn something in the process.
make yourself a favorite and DO NOT take him, the average grade in his econ 307 is C, han assign sit so you can change your sit after that. 3 exams. 1 project paper due to end of semester so you dont know the grade for that paper. his exam is tricky and his class is always be recoded. If I did not need this class I would never take it with him.
Class consists of 3 exams, including a midterm and an accumulative final. Records all his lectures and provides notes for every chapter. However, I would still use the textbook and not dependent on the notes. I enjoyed his lectures because he gave realistic examples of the topics we covered.
Overall the professor knows the subject well. He can be extremely boring and get off topic but he knows how to come back to his main points. He does care for students and wants the best for them. I would not take him again because of his random rants that have nothing to do with economics.
He is a nice guy, but not an engaging instructor. He has a scripted lecture he is filming each class, so lecture is not interactive. Ambiguous grading system, but curves everything. Had no idea what I had in the class until final grades were posted. Overall, easy A if you go to every class, take good notes, and study a bit. Never used the book once
3 midterms and an exam. Lots of online HW as well. VERY hard class. You need to read everything and review every day to pass this class. The professor can be nice and also very rude to students.
Be prepared to read the book, his lectures are very boring. His tests are very similar to the chapters in the book.
This professor showed up 30 minutes late to both of our midterms and still handed them out expecting us to finish in time. His online quizzes are spread out and he sometimes expects you to finish four quizzes at once, takes hours to complete through Aplia.
Professor Tontz is a decent guy who knows his stuff. However, the class is challenging. Not in the material itself but the way he tests us on our learned material. The exams are based on economic theory, so you better know the content inside and out. 2 midterms, aplia hw, and one cumulative final. At times he can be rude but I mean we are adults.
Attendance is not mandatory but he does give you free answers to the exam on some days so attending is worth it. His lectures aren't the best since he could sometimes get off topic. Just make sure to read the book and study the notes and slides he provides since all the info you need is there.
I learned nothing in this class. It is too broad and has basic information about marketing. Every class meeting was a lecture that he posts the slides on canvas, and is recorded so he just looks at his laptop. Tests are tricky and even though I studied hard, myself and majority of the class would average 60% on the tests. Do not take him.
I think Richard Tontz is a great professor but I've had better. I don't think I'll personally take his class again. I would say if you're in need of a class, take it if you have to, if there are other options, take them instead.
Professor Tontz is one of the easy going professors at CSUN. He is calm and caring. You don't need to show up to the class because he posts everything on Canvas. there are 2 midterms and one cumulative final plus one research paper. He is clear and fun. You need to read the book and his notes carefully to pass his final test.
I learned nothing in this class. I had to teach myself to do the homework from ECON 160, he rambles in class. Hes really nice and everything but hell get really mad if anybody talks or leaves early. Barely passed this class
Out of respect for his character and years of teaching, he is a good person overall, just not the professor to have during a pandemic. Even though he is knowledgeable in platforms like canvas, he failed to communicate with students on-time and lagged in all things. I wish we had met in different circumstances, it was pretty unfortunate.
Professor Tontz is extremely knowledgeable and has a relaxed lecture style. The semester was cut short by Covid-19 so we didn't have too many in person classes, but I enjoyed the ones we did have. Tests weren't too hard if you study.
