Very young..seems unsure and nervous. Always says "you see what i'm saying?" and no one does. VERY monotone. Good class if you have other work to do. He's not bad to look at. Attendance isn't regulated at all, tests are a joke because you can't get anything wrong. Learned very little. Easy A
He's a very nice guy and the class is overall easy and he seems really nervous teaching...he's not very clear with things but he's good to look at though...test are easy and you don't need to read the book, everything you need to know for the test are from his lectures!!
His class changed the way i see the world and my role within it. Highly recommended if you care about better uderstanding our world.
Very new teacher with an unsure view on teaching. Extremely vague in his lectures. Ive had no problems falling asleep out of boredom. If you arent a bleeding heart liberal you may have issues with your grade. I was forced to lie about my social values in order to maintain a semi-decent grade. Very dissapointed because he replaced a better teacher.
the class was boring for the most part. barely even talked about what was on the test. needs more practice teaching.
Really enjoyable class, learned a lot! He is young but very knowledgable in his field. Would recommend to others.
Its Early in the semester but I think hes going to be an awesome teacher,, i get a positive vibe from his class. i was real sick the other night and he said i could leave class early but in all honesty his class was so much fun i stayed. Really enjoying the class so far
Richard is young, and he is still working on his style of teaching, but he is very educated and smart. Moreover, you believe it or not, I was the one who argued with him throughout the entire semester, and I got an "A" for being honest. I am not sure if he is too bias after that. I really respect him for the things he's done at his age!
Instructor Unis, is young he taught me a lot on Sociology and really knows his stuff. He is very knowledgable in his field. He made me more interested in sociology and made the suject more fun for me. He is a brilliant instructor. Thank you so much instructor Unis.
Richard is a very nice, genuine teacher. He is still new at teaching, and has very goot intentions, but is very unorganized. He does not use the textbook and just uses his power points. Lectures are very lengthy and pretty much stayed on the same topic through out the whole semester, which can be repetitive.Needs more practice on lecturing.
Save yourself the trouble and find someone else. He's completely disorganized and lectures on two topics the entire semester: denial and his past professors.
I'll be honest, the class was boring but I got an "A". The tests are essay responses to Social Problems. You get to pick what you want to write about from a list of options. With a small amount of effort, you can get an "A". I wish he would have been a bit more interesting though.
Nice guy, good information, sometimes directions and expectations are unclear.
I attended a Sociology Class taught by professor Richard Unis and want to say how exciting and rewarding taking this class was. Professor Unis is extremely passionate about what he teaches and in turn passes his passion on to his students. Not only is he very knowledgeable in the subject of sociology but his personal experiences add alot.
His way of teaching made me want to attend class and I look forward to the following class every week. I truly enjoyed learning from him and sharing my opinion with him and the entire class. He has opened my eyes to parts of Sociology I have never seen before.
I am honored to have been his student and look forward to keeping with my studies and having the opportunity to attend a lecture in the future being given by professor Unis. He opened my eyes to the bigger picture!
Nice guy pretty easy class but he likes to talk and will never let you out a minute early
Make sure to read the assigned chapters before class. Participation during lectures make the class go by faster. His lectures pretty much review the chapters. Class is easy. Two quizzes, two papers, one midterm, one final, many extra credit opportunities. Take him.
His class is pretty easy. Your supposed to read the book but, he goes over slides in class of everything you need to know. You have 2 quiz 2 papers 1000 words a mid term and a final. Sometimes he seems like he doesn't know what he's doing struggling for words..um..like..yeah..ok..so..you know what I mean?..Get's annoying fast. Ultra liberal!
To be honest, I did not like his class too much. Nice guy, very intelligent, but he always seems ackward, he speaks very monotone so his lectures tend to be boring. Great info and nice use of slides and videos. He is not clear on what he wants for your papers, so it was difficult sometimes. needs to spend more time helping students.
I didn't like his class much. He didn't always show up, and when he did it was incredibly boring. He speaks quietly, and seems very unsure of himself most of the time. He does seem like a good guy, but I didn't like his teaching style at all. His grading is based on writing, so keep that in mind.
This professor is VERY monotone he's lecture's r boring, and at times I just wanted to slam my head on the desk for taking his class BUTTTT all in all it was worth it bc he is a good teacher if u want to have an A take him he's a reasonable guy he's tests r all essay Q's but he gives u a studyguide so u r well prepare for the exams! TAKE THE CLASS
I took his class specifically because i have heard he was a good teacher. Boy was this class hard for me. His quiz... QUIZ was a 50 plus multiple choice. And tests were 3 essay questions per test. Even though i struggled in his class i found him to be very helpful towards the end of the semester with my transition of being sociology major.
Super BORING class, be warned. Whoever said Quiz was hard, didn't take notes during the study guide! He practically gives you all the answers during the review. Book hardly used if at all, all the info needed is from taking notes of his slides. Real Easy A unless you cannot write an essay, Final test is take home!
I don't recommend him; his lectures are UNCLEAR. Try to find another prof if u get any chance to do so. Midterm & final r all about writing essays which is totally not easy. Most students got 70 & 80 out of 120 in the tests which cuts too many points of ur overall grade at the end. Plus, his lectures r BORING!
Some students were having a tough time with his teaching tactics, but he is young and his lectures seem to be a w.i.p. If you comprehend the concepts and do the classwork- it's a great course overall.
Pretty interesting class. Teacher had passion for the subject that was being taught. He is extremely understanding with missing class. Seems to enjoy lecturing his students. Does run off subject a bit but its usually always about things that are going on in society and is stuff everyone should know. Give lots of opportunity to do extra credit.
This is the only class I am taking that relates directly to my life. The subject matter is pretty much the world we live in. Prof Unis is really knowledgeable and down to earth. I've learned more from the class discussions than any book has ever taught me. Great teacher, great class.
This class changed my life and the way I see things in the world. I don't know about the running off subject in class discussions... I think the discussions are the best part of the class. I mean that is how Most of the theories and terms made most sense to me. I took the class at SDSU and learned more at Grossmont. TAKE THIS CLASS :)
All in all a good class. Unis was open to hearing all sides to an argument and I really did learn a lot about culture and poverty throughout the world. Word to the wise, you may think that you dont have to show up for class (a lot of students would skip out), and he will not say anything to you but you may be in for a surprise at grade time!
Very boring!!!! I can't stand this class, i feel like it's useless most of the time because i dont understand anything he says and you blank out because of how boring the lecture is. didnt do anything except listen to lecture all semester long! he's a nice dude but it's very boring.
The content of the class was very interesting and made me think a lot about the world around us. The class was mainly about inequalities. He is pretty hot too. BUT, he is so boring and it was a challenge to stay awake. I'm not kidding.
I loved this class it was a huge eye opener and touched on great subjects. If you like a class with lots of discussion ten this class is for you. Mr. Unis teaches at an University level so I think some students have a hard time not having their hand held through out their papers. Mr. Unis is very passionate about what he teaches and is a cool guy
He posts all the stuff on BB,if you miss the class, just go on BB you can find everything. His class is easy to pass,if you turn in your essays on time and write enough stuff on your test(you can choose 3 ques to write about),you should be good. He rarely takes attendance,if you need ge units for transferring and want a good grade, take his class.
This class is great. I didn't really know what Sociology was, and now I see that it affects so many areas of my life. Prof. Unis is extremely knowledgeable and relates the subject matter to our lives and what's going on in the world. Take this class if you care about race relations, politics, poverty, war, gender, pop culture, deviance...
Professor Unis is a very intelligent teacher. He doesnt respond to emails often and was absent quite a few times. He is a little awkward to talk to and his lectures are very long, but honestly I did learn alot from him. He is a smart teacher, I wish he was more on top of things. Not a hard class tho but you never know your grade til the last day.
he has lots of good information, and knows a lot about the subject but the lectures are long
Although monotonous, His lectures were interesting. I didn't feel like he gave much thought about his students. He doesn't appear passionate about his job. VERY UNORGANIZED
Had professor Unis last semester. I learned a lot, the lectures are long, but interesting... the class was also 3 hours and we didn't let us out early.
He is mono-toned but has a lot of knowledge and passion for the subject! I had his class only once a week so it was three hours long.. he would drag on sometimes so at times I would go off into my own world. Decent grader and would take this class again.. The only thing i didn't enjoy was him not posting grades often enough to my liking.
BEST PROFESSOR I HAVE EVER TAKEN! VERY KNOWLEDGEABLE AND WILL HELP YOU IF YOU JUST TALK TO HIM. TAKE HIM
He was okay
His lectures can be a little boring, but it's usually best to sit through them. He can be a bit soft spoken at times. He will sometimes try to have debates which helps the learning process. The papers weren't too bad, just put in the work and you will get an A. His tests are essay format, but he gives you the questions beforehand.
Great class to take with a more challenging course as it is interesting without being overwhelming. As long as you do your assigned papers and study for the exams you will ace the class.
One of my favorite professors! Incredibly smart and loves to engage in conversation. I learned so much in his class, he is always informed on current events in the world and politics. I wish he taught all of my classes. Most of the class is lecture, so bring your eyes and ears and you will do just fine.
Took his online class. Easy A, but you won't learn much and be prepared for frustration. I think he forgot he had an online class every week. Assignments wouldn't be posted until the day before they were due, and zero communication from him at all. All open book tests with multiple attempts allowed, but you get help from him if you need it.
Best online teacher I've taken . Gives clear map of the course and you can access assignments weeks out. Clearly lays out the grading rubric and word count. Mainly discussion board and journal entry based with a mid term, couple quizzes, an essay, and final (essay). If you like to get ahead definitely take Unis.
Unis made the 8 week online course easy as pie. I didn't do the final paper and still got a B (could've gotten an A but I hate Sociology). Unis is very one-sided (politically leftist) as is most of Sociology, so if you're a conservative, then at times it can feel awkward, as if you shouldn't offer your differing opinion. But, like I said, easy A.
Do NOT recommend taking him online. He didn't grade homework until half way through semester and then once again at the end the two days before the grade submission deadline. Sometimes he would answer emails with questions, sometimes not. HOWEVER, if you don't care about that, his class is seriously easy and he gives a ton of extra credit.
this professor has no structure, no due date on anything. class time was more about his person rants and his agenda to form the minds of young people to think like he does rather than actually teaching sociology.
Great Professor, you can tell he is passionate about the subject as well as many other subjects. I really enjoyed his stories on his own experiences, and he was very insightful on question I had outside of class. As long as you show up, learn the material, you will pass, if you don't pass, then it was your own fault. I would take his class again!
Out of all my online classes his was definitely the least organized. It's an easy class but I could hardly tell when something was due, he did not respond to any of my emails the whole semester. I also just don't feel like I learned anything. If you just want to pass though with little effort this would be an ideal course for you.
Inspirational class, easy A if you do all the work. Lectures did seem long, but then class was from 7 - 10pm. Overall I had a good experience in the class and he is very passionate about the subject.
Introduction to Sociology was a pretty easy class. The material was easy to understand and a lot of it was common sense. Honestly I stopped reading the assignments about a week into the course because you don't need to read to get good grades on the quizzes. Most of the stuff you can just look up on Google. He is definitely a bit biased to the left
Class wasn't hard to be successful; a multiple choice midterm exam (online), an essay final exam (online), and a group presentation. All weekly homework was done online, as well, through canvas. The topics in his lectures and in the homework were relevant and good to be informed about.
There is ALOT of reading, plus hour long videos that he tests you on. You have to be sure to pay attention to everything he talks about, even the visuals he uses- those are testable too. If you pay attention it's an easy A.
He's a great professor and very passionate about Sociology, as is Professor Santiago, who sometimes stands in for him as a substitute. As another person said though, if you are right leaning then you won't want to speak. The majority of the discussion is very left wing and doesn't really entertain right ideas. Easy to feel alienated because of it.
Prof Unis is amazing! He is so creative with his analogies and his groups activities. This made me remember the course material very well. He gives quizzes weekly, and will let you submit homework late without taking away points. He is very understanding and genuinely wants his students to succeed.
Professor Unis is amazing he really does care about his students and will help in anyway he can. He lets you turn in late assignments and everything he teaches he makes it interesting for you. He is very creative. He has been a professor for 14 years and believes his students should be set up for success and makes sure he does in part in helping.
One of the best professors I have had. He really respects his students. Midterm and final is online and you get two attempts. 5 in-class quizzes but he tells you what to study and it's an open notebook. I would definitely take him again.
Really great teacher, had him my first semester at Grossmont and I really enjoyed the class. Very passionate about what he teaches, very understanding and wants you to succeed. Do the online work and listen to the lectures, its a great class.
Professor Unis is definitely one of the best teachers in GC. He gives a lot of hw to help the students under the concepts deeply, but he also gives a lot of extra credits, which will help you to get A easier. There are also many interesting activities in class that make me enjoy his class more and more. Also, the quizzes and exams are online.
EASIEST A EVER!!!!! If you want to pass take Mr. Unis!!! He offers so much extra credit! I finished off with a 112% in the class!! Take advantage of the opportunities, they are easy extra credit assignments! Read, study & put in the time and effort! Goodluck everyone!
He is an inspirational teacher and genuinely cares about his students. The class was super awesome and prof. Unis has been one of my favorite teachers at Grossmont so far. Taking his course makes me want to switch my major to sociology.
Best Professor so far. Clear instruction and lectures best professor for sociology become he cares about people and society. Definitely take his class I have learn so much and enjoy his class.
Amazing teacher. Very helpful and understanding. So much extra credit opportunities.
Literally one of the best professors I've had. Such a fun and engaging class I wish I could take it again. So many extra credit opportunities and he is very engaged with his students. Recommend if you love engagement and don't like just listening to lectures.
A chill and easy guy. He allows you to make up work to get your grade up even if it was from the first week of class and you're at the end of semester. Homework is easy but does take up some time. He explains things clearly and wants to make sure that his students are understanding the material because he really wants them to pass the class.
I recommend anyone and everyone to take SOCAL 120 w/ Professor U. His lectures & group projects are worth coming to & no added deadline pressure for assessments. He cares about his students and it shows during the semester. He creates a safe place with his classroom for students so they can give their thoughts & opinions freely, w/out judgement.
I thoroughly appreciated my experience in Professor Unis' class. He offers numerous opportunities for extra credit, and I genuinely admire his teaching style that consistently engages with students and encourages their active participation. I gained a wealth of knowledge from his course, and I'm grateful to have been a part of it.
Easiest teacher!
Friendly and empathetic.
Richard Unis is a humanitarian and understanding teacher. As an international student, given all the difficulties of studying another language, I learned a lot in a person's classes. I also felt motivated and encouraged by his classes. He is an excellent professor, my best references about him.
Pace of the class was a bit fast, but not too overwhelming on the workload. Extra credit was offered almost every week & you're allowed to use lecture slides when completing quizzes. No textbook needed. All readings are sourced from a free online textbook he links. Thorough in his lectures & assignment expectations.
BEST! 8wk online class, it was structured well and he replied to emails timely. Big workload, but he is flexible. Is knowledgeable in his field of study, I feel I've learned pretty valuable things. No midterm, but the final is 2 essays. I'm not a good writer but he still gave me 100% on all of my essays. I took this class for IGETC requirements.
Prof. Unis is the most thoughtful and engaging instructors I've had. Period. He genuinely cares about his students. The course was well-organized with clear expectations, and the content felt relevant and eye-opening. He gives helpful feedback, and wants you to succeed. If you're willing to engage and put in the effort, you'll learn a lot!
I took this class to fulfill a GE requirement, but it turned out to be one of the most interesting classes I've ever taken. The topics were super engaging and everything was really well organized. Prof. Unis made it easy to follow and complete the assignments. Honestly, he is a great teacher and the class will change how you see things. Easy A.
Prof. Unis is one of those professors who actually makes you think differently about the world. His course was super organized, and everything was clear. He gives thoughtful feedback, is very responsive, and genuinely cares about your success and grade. He wants to see you get an A. You can tell he puts a lot of effort into teaching. TAKE HIS CLASS
Profesor Unis is an amazing professor. He is very passionate about teaching and focuses on ensuring that everyone understands the topic and opens it up for discussion to participate. His methods of teaching is something that other professors should emulate
He is sooo caring omg!!!! I took him for 8 weeks, online. He let us submit late work for full credit, he cares for his students to succeed. Honestly nicest professor ever!
best teacher ever if you are interested in sociology take his class. lectures are super easy, he is very caring, and makes his classes fun and easy to understand. minimal homework and offers a lot of extra credit and makes an effort to not let you fall behind. TAKE HIS CLASS!
Best teacher ever!!! Mr. Unis is one of the nicest and caring teachers I have ever had. He is very understanding and will do his best to work with you. This class is a easy A as long as you do all the homework and quizzes.
I took Prof. Unis online, he was very kind. He would remind us of all the missing work we had left to do and send multiple emails. He was also very understanding. Take him!!!!!!!
