This teacher is the most boring teacher I've ever had the aqaintance to take. This class is so boring that the only option to do in there is sleep. He is the worst replacement for the old MLIT teacher Kabin Thomas. Mr. Salonon makes classical music seem so boring. This teacher sucks ass!
this teacher does suck, his tests are insainly detailed and very hard...not what music lit is supposed to be. no longer a blow off class like Kabins
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!! One of the hardest teachers I have ever had. THIS IS MUSIC FOR GODS SAKE!!!!!!
Dont listen to these other people, they are just lazy. I realize that it is a music class but that doesnt mean he is just going to hand you an A. You dont have to buy the book, you do have to actually listen to the music he assigns, and you will need to go to class. do that and you will get and A.
unlike these other people i don't have music lecture (i took it when kabin was still here :) ), but he's a cool guy in my theory class.
He does not teach, he just spews stupid facts. You learn nothing and he isn't nice in class.
DO Not Take This Class!!! The tests are hard, and he does not teach. My advice is take the other guy if at all possible.
This guy is awful. Take the other professor if you have the chance. He treats everyone in the class like they are music majors, but it's just an intro class. Even if you study and listen to the music, it is hard to make a good grade. Very boring -- avoid this one!
Look, it is not that hard. his tests arent hard and the music isnt hard. there is no reading in the book. all you have to do is listen to some music and take good notes and you will get an A. everybody else here is just lazy or never went to class.
Okay I am not lazy and went to every class and this class was still rather dificult coming from someone who is completely not musically inclined. I recommed to take the other teacher if music is not a strong point for you personally.
funny, sarcastic, and always helpful. class was challenging, but not too hard. Really cool guy.
He knows what he's talking about, but not very good at lecturing on it. I was constantly bored and rarely went to class. Dry sense of humor. Class was poorly structured, too.
I have played the violin since I was 4, and I didn't even get an A. He's boring beyond words and makes the class way too difficult for it being an intro class. Don't take this class!!
His is an awesome teacher. You don't have to read the book. All you have to do is take notes and it's an easy A. He's also hilarious-especially with the Whoo Whoo signals going off in your head for the secondary functions and modulations.
He has no personality. The class was incredibly dull and the teaching was very poor. Granted, AP is not the easiest of courses, but there are much better teachers
Horrible! This class was so hard and uninteresting!!!!!!!! Yuck!!!!!
He is a horrible teacher. At least i have games on my cell phone to play to pass time in class. he is the most BORING individual i have ever met and trust me he is no different when he teaches.
easy class as long as you go and take notes, he tells you exactly what will be on the test and explains things well. It's easy to see that he really likes music and has fun teaching students about it.
Well, he took over my class after Kabin was fired. I thought his class would be hard, but not at all. He tells you exactly what will be on the test and the test are so simple if you bother to come to class and take a few notes. The class is boring so take something to read or to do, play with your cell phone, or just anything.
He took over after Kabin Thomas got reassigned. He wasn't that interesting, but I preferred him over Kabin. Class was fair and organized, although dull. He doesn't have meditation moments like Kabin did (one of the few good things about Kabin). If you're looking for an easy class, this is it, but if you're looking for interest, look elsewhere.
Easy class, but very boring. There are some interesting performances sometimes though. He goes over everything on the test and if you go to class and study it's an easy A.
He's a relatively funny guy, but his class is one of the most boring I've ever had. It was balanced by the fact that it was also one of the easiest. He tells you exactly what's on the test, word for word. You have to see 3 concerts, but some of them are good, so choose wisely.
If you are looking for an easy class.. don't get this teacher get the other one. I make higher grades on my business and math classes than on his music tests.
It was a very easy class for me since I have been in music for 7 years, but those who have no music experince will find it a struggle. Make sure you listen to the music before the tests, and study. It is important to go to class since that is when he gives out notes. Do well on your composer presentation, because it is 20% of your final grade.
get the other teacher! he is not helpful AT ALL! i asked multiple times for extra help etc and he was never responsive.
I waited for 2 years to take Music Lecture and then took it because I heard it was an easy A and I like music. Not so with this guy. He really curved me in the end, but the class was so damn boring I never wanted to go. His tests are hard, too. The other teacher is so much easier and better, seriously. Take this guy if you want to waste money .
Class sounds easy, it's not
It's simple. Do not take him. TAKE THE OTHER GUY!!! (Runkles). I made an F on the first test. I currently have a 3.5 GPA. I didnt put much effort but I signed on for an easy A. If you dont like music dont take. Unless you want to put lots of effort and know about music. NO! NO! No!
If you aren't interested in this stuff it might be hard for you. His tests suck cause you have to remember music listening and match them with the piece on the test. This class really blows but the homework is easy.
ridiculous. take Runkles. end of story
he is awful.. never returns emails. doesnt care if you are there or not, doesnt care about you. Gave me a 89.9= a B... didnt help at all when asked
I thought he was a great teacher. He told you exactly what you needed to know for the tests. He also gave bonus opportunities at the end of the semester. I really enjoyed this class!
I honestly don't know why Salonen has such bad reviews. He is SO EASY. Just three exams, and he reviews for the exam the class period before and throughout the semester. You don't use the book AT ALL, but you do need to listen to the music. There's even an optionial extra credit project.
I'm really shocked by all of the bad reviews. I have had a music background, so I have found it easier than most. He is a really nice guy. Listen to the songs a lot and write what he tells you to.
He is harder alot harder than the other Music Lecture teacher... but isn't hard. You do have to study. I have ZERO musical background, got a 78 on the first test as a wake up call, then studied and got a 98 on the next test. Just go to class, take notes, and study and you will get an A
You must go to class because that is the only way you can get the test material but if you can do that then half the test will be a breeze but i have no background in music and was torture listening to the first and second test music. The third test wasnt as bad because they are more recent.not an easy A but very possible
For all the people below who thought this class was hard, you must be retarded! The tests were based COMPLETELY on his easy to understand notes and the music pieces, so you don't even have to read! Make sure you get the e-mail of a few people in case you miss a class though, because he doesn't post them on blackboard.
Easy as long as you go to class/get the notes.
Not sure how he's gotten so many bad reviews. Funny guy, simple notes, he gives a review day before every test and will give you a lot of the test answers. If you have the notes (and there aren't many) and listen to the pieces a few times, there's no reason you won't have an A. Good, easy class.
The easiest class I've ever taken at the University. He wasn't an amazing professor but he wasn't bad at all. With 150 people in class he didn't have much time for one on one interaction so if that's what your looking for then don't take him. His tests were SO easy if you take notes and listen to the music. Plus he gives 5 bonus pts on every test
He seems nice, but he makes his class way too hard... You will either take notes from his powerpoint slides or watch a movie. This will be your study material. The tests are not easy. Overall, I would have rather taken the other professor!
I enjoyed him a lot. He was a very good teacher and was interesting. I went to class and took notes and listened to the music and made nothing less than a 100 on the tests. You do need to know your material but the tests are easy and he helps out a lot with a pretest for the music pieces on the test. I would take another class from him.
SUCHHH AN EASY CLASS. I loved it. You didnt have to go to class everytime, but I enjoyed going to class.
This is such an easy class! Saying that it is easy ONLY If you go to class! Everything that is on the test is in his notes and on review day he gives you a lot of answers. You also MUST listen to the music to pass. But those are the only two things you need to do. He makes it interesting and he NEVER uses the book!
If you don't have a previous backround in music, his class is quite difficult. Go to class, study, and listen to the music and you should pass; still, his tests are hard for those who haven't been around music.
You CAN pass this class without having a music background. Take notes, study, and listen to the listening lists. He is funny and tries to get you interested.
He is very funny and the class is easy. Just make sure you go to class and listen to the music that will be on the test. I really enjoyed him, he loves what he does!
Good teacher, lectures were usually pretty boring. He gives alot of information on subjects. Many students just showed up for the test. This can be done because you can buy the study guides off the internet. This class can sneak up on you if you slack off the first two tests.
This class CAN be relatively easy. You just have to make sure you do the listening and take notes, and be sure to get your concerts in! He doesn't accept the reports through email so just remember that.
This class is easy; he doesn't count attendance, but go anyway if you (are not a music major) and want to do well on the exams. No extra credit, it only comes from the exams. His concert assignments: the 1st one was easy because it's your own opinion, but the 2nd one involves research. Take this class only if you want to actually study for it.
Great teacher. If you don't mind do a little bit of work. I highly recommend.
His test are the hardest of any of the music lecture classes. He also has a project that takes a long time but he grades pretty easy. But compared to the other teachers, he is by far the hardest when it comes to test, which is most the grade in the class
Nice guy and an easy class however my friends have the other teachers and they are way easier. I just buy the notes on notehall and do well on the tests.
His tests are pretty difficult. I would recommend going to the class as much as possible. He is the hardest teacher out of the other Music lecture professors. However, the concerts and the projects aren't hard.
Salonen is an awesome teacher and does a great job explaining everything. His second test is quite difficult, but every other grade is an easy A and there is no reason to get anything else in this class. Though he said the third test would be difficult, I found it to be very easy because of the Research Projects we had completed. I Recommend!
I don't know why everyone is giving him bad reviews. Salonen is so nice and easy. I made over 100% on every single test and made a 106% in the class.. go to class, take notes, and there's your A. SO EASY. WHY ARE PEOPLE GIVING HIM BAD REVIEWS?!?!?! It must be the people obviously don't ever go to class.....
SUPER EASY PROFESSOR!!!
the listening portion of the tests is a bit difficult, other than that the tests are that bad. research project is a pain. he's not a great teacher, he just shows slides of notes, which i guess is all you need
The tests are horrible! I have gone to every class ad i still manage to fail every test and I am a good student.
Salonen was not the easiest teacher for Music Lecture, but he wasn't hard. The listening tests are kind of difficult but just put the music on your ipod and it's a lot better. Textbook is useless unless you don't go to class, but the cd is needed
Dr. Salonen is the easiest professor ever. As long as you attend class you will make As
I took his class online and his assignments are ridiculously stupid and pointless
Dr. Salonen loves his music. His tests are rather difficult compared to the other Music Lecture professors. He basically gives you a free C as long as you do the assignments. Study for the tests and review the listening sections, and you will easily make an A in this course.
This guy is incredibly frustrating. If you do the project and the concerts, you will get the maximum points. However, his test questions and the music clips are obscure. He teaches from power points and videos. I feel like this teacher puts the minimum effort necessary to teach this class. Take someone else if you have a choice.
Music major section: I HATE SALONEN! Too many ridiculous assignments and he's even worse for music technology.
Would not suggest taking Salonen. He was reeeeeallyyy hard (especially compared to the other teachers of this course). Attendance isn't really mandatory, just go the review day and test day and you'll be good. But, his tests are HARD.
He isn't as hard as everyone says. He grades easy on the project and loves if you come to him outside of class for help. If you go to class and take notes, you'll do fine. The only hard part of the tests are the music listening and IDing part.
Show up and he'll give you the "tricks" to the listening tests. Never used the book but had to have the CD's. Oh well. Not hard if you show up. Quizzes weekly, but he gives you the answers the week before.
He presents the material through PowerPoints and videos. He does a good job of explaining the material. There's pop quizzes every week which are easy if you show up to class. The tests are easy if you study and listen to the music. He also gives a review the class before test day which is really helpful for the listening section.
He is a little dry, and goes on rants, but overall he explains the material enough to comprehend
Took this class expecting it to be a blow off class. It has become the class that I have to study for the most. Very hard compared to the other music lecture teachers and he keeps making things harder. I would not recommend taking him at all.
Salonen is definitely not the easiest Music Lecture teacher but it is very possible to get an A. But, in order to get an A you must put forth some effort. I did have to study my notes and listen to the listening for a nice amount of time to do well on the tests/quizs but I got an A. But, prepping this much for an elective is not good in my book.
Horrible teacher! Take someone else if possible. Everyone says you do not need the book but the test is almost directly out of the book. Attendance is mandatory to pass his class and his tests, which are extremely difficult to pass if you have not studied an extreme amount.
He's a good teacher and his lectures are interesting because he cares about the subject. Go to class, because he has random pop quizzes and his tests are straight from the lecture. You don't need the book, but you need the CD set that comes with the book. So either risk youtube, or borrow CDs from someone, or spend money and get the cds.
Easy class but you do have to go he gives random pop quizzes. You don't need the book or the CD unless you want to have them. I used you-tube and did fine.
This class is fairly easy if you attend regularly. He does give random pop quizzes and you do have to listen to a lot of uninteresting music. If you aren't particularly interested in fine arts, but have to take one, this is a decent one to take. He is a good professor.
Super easy class! You have to purchase the Music CDs that come with the book though. Start listening to the music 2 weeks before the test and you'll be fine. I am not smart and I got a 100% on all the exams. Also, there is one research powerpoint. Yes, it takes time but he doesn't grade hard.
don't need a book or cd for the music. don't need to go to class but gives a quiz every week so get notes from someone. class is easy especially if yo have any music background
He is interesting and tries his best to make it fun. He is fun, and the class is super easy.
Salonen is a jokeā¦.doesn't respond to emails or communicate with students in any way. I pity anyone without a music background taking this class: I am a pianist and I was appalled at how he breezed through lessons without any clarity for those who don't have training. Not a music major? Forget it it. He could care less.
TERRIBLE ONLINE PROFESSOR. Gives no real instruction, just lays out the material - super inconsistent on what day assignments are due and will never reply to your emails. Its not a super hard class, the assignments are just pointless and the tests are comparatively too difficult.
Great professor. Albeit eccentric, he'll tell you exactly what you need to know to pass his class with an A. You CANNOT miss class, though. He'll give random pop quizzes (which are really easy if you take decent notes), and always gives vital information every class. The audio examples he gives are actually quite enjoyable to listen to as well.
The WORST instructor ever. Will never respond to emails. He doesn't email you with updates or guide you through the class at all. If you take it online, you're on your own. Don't need the textbook though.
DO NOT TAKE HIM. AVOID HIM AT ALL COSTS. TAKE Mihalka INSTEAD.
He is the worst professor EVER!!
Salonen's tests are super easy if you go to class and write down everything on the powerpoints. If you miss class, he doesn't post the notes anywhere so you are screwed. He makes you take a weekly popquiz but he tells you whats on it. the hardest part is the listening list where he plays clips of classical music and you have to identify it.
This teacher was the most difficult teacher to take for Music Lit. It was supposed to be a simple class but it was far from that. This teacher is VERY serious about the subject and is not flexible at all. We had no extra credit or group problems. Test required a extensive knowledge about the music and composers. DO NOT TAKE PROFESSOR
His lectures can be interesting and he dies post additional videos to keep you interested. It is nearly impossible to contact him though if you have any questions because he doesn't have an office phone and he takes a long time to answer his e-mail.
This is your typical boring elective class. It's very easy if you go to class and take notes. He has pop quizzes once a week (and doesn't tell you which day), 2 papers, & 3 tests. The class doesn't have an enormous amount of points so you have to do good on tests and quizzes. Tests require you to know approx. 20 songs by ear. Class is very do-able.
Easy class. Pop Quiz every week but he tells what will be on it a few days prior so there in no reason to score poorly. Test cover the same information that he goes over in the slides plus the listening section. Take this class for your Fine Arts credit..
Good professor. Does give pop quizzes, but tells the students what is on them. Very limited number of grades and points in the class, but if you show up and take notes he will give you everything you need to know to get a good grade.
Salonen's lectures wandered and were not very clear. At the beginning of the year he would read the power-points and give you information, but by the end of the semester all he did was turn on a video to take notes off of and not mention what was important. Attendance isn't graded but there is a pop quiz once a week that you cannot make up.
He is a very good teacher!! However, he does expect everyone to understand what is going on without really going into much detail. You also have to memorize parts of classical music for each test... which I found hard to do because everything sounded similar to me. Take the time to study for his test and listen to the music and you will be fine.
Dr. Salonen is a great teacher! The tests and quizzes come straight from the in class notes. The listening for this class is difficult sometimes, but learning the songs for the quizzes will help you to do well on the test listening section. Bonus: optional final
Studying is required in order to make a good grade in the class. There are music listening sections of each test that may require hours of study time in order to memorize them. Showing up to class was also very important as the test is straight out of the powerpoints and videos shown in class.
Music Lit wasn't anything I expected. I thought it would be a blow off class from what I was told but it really was challenging for me. It's nothing crazy but it's a class I did study for often and had to work hard for. Salonen is alright, good dude but I really just didn't enjoy his class.
Everybody told me this was an easy fine arts credit, but it's not. That being said he made this every boring class somewhat interesting. You have a quiz once a week, but you don't know when;STUDY. If you show up to class, take notes and study them for a couple of hours before the test you're good. I had the listening on repeat for hours to learn it
Salonen is one of the more difficult professors for MLIT 1003, but he is likely the most knowledgeable on the subject. Nice guy and very approachable.
I took Salonen's class online. Found his lectures interesting, enjoyed the unique coursework (powerpoint presentation). He's responsive to emails, but slow to grade homework. I really enjoyed his class. Tough music identification on quizzes
I was told MLIT would be an easy class and it is not... at all! one of the hardest classes i took freshman year. Professor Salonen is knowledgeable, but if you have no music experience, like me, do not take this class. Pop quizzes every week and it takes HOURS to study for the listening parts on his tests.
The pop quizzes killed my grade along with the listening questions on his tests. Not only did the listening questions take hours to study for, but they were also half of the test.
Easy enough to pass. Just take good notes on the online lectures and know the music on the listening lists. I'm almost positive he doesn't even look at written assignments.
Class was very easy since I knew stuff about music, but if you go to class and copy all the notes that's on the screen and listen to the music, it's an easy A. The test come from exactly the notes and music you have to listen to. There's a word bank for every part of the test. There are pop quizzes once a week on a random day so you can't skip.
Professor Salonen has a very well structured class, if you just listen to the songs he gives you to memorize, and show up for class, you'll be in good shape.
I was taking this class online for a fine art credit and had to drop it before finals. There were several homework assignments, which I'm pretty sure he doesn't even look at. When it came to tests I didn't do well and I messaged him numerous times asking for help and some guidance on how to prepare better for the tests, but I never got a response.
I watched the lectures provided and still didn't do well in this class. I took the class online and I have no music experience at all. I definitely should have taken it in class. I reached out several times for some advice and he never got back to me. My friend also took this class and had the same experience. Listening questions are half the test.
I took this course online during an intersession; it wasn't an easy A but it was certainly not too challenging. As long as you do the homework at least kind of study for the test you should do just fine. Dr. Salonen is readily available to answers questions through text, and is very understanding. I would recommend this course for a good fine arts.
Salonen is a good professor. He knows his material and is passionate about it. He gives weekly pop quizzes, but never tries to trick you on them and theyre easy if you just study. Notes are MUST have if you want to pass. Be sure to listen to the music too. He also gives a lot of extra credit opportunities! Be aware, he hardly replies to emails.
The class isn't that bad, you just need to know how to study and prepare for the exams in this class. He gives Pop quizzes at random times of the week so it is vital that you show up, get the notes, and be aware of when quizzes are. Although he isn't necessarily the most relational guy, he gets the job done and teaches what you need to know.
MLIT 1003 was an enjoyable class but it was not an easy A. You really have to know the music and terms and what he goes over in class.
By far one of the worst classes I've ever taken. The class was called "Experiencing Music" but it felt more like "Music Appreciation", and make that only for old/obscure music. Salonen spends entire lectures beating around the bush and projecting his own arbitrary tastes instead of focusing on the science of sound and the components of music.
Do NOT take Music Appreciation with Salonen unless you are already a full-blown music expert, that is unless you love weird profs whose stagnant lectures are hard to follow. Seriously, there are far better fine arts electives to take than this that could actually benefit you. Dont make the same wrong choice I did.
In an all online class, he did not make the recordings of the lectures available, meaning if you missed class there was almost no way to get the information from that class. Tests are way more difficult than the information that he goes over. Take a different music credit
Salonen is great! This class was an easier 'A' because of COVID (being online) because we didn't have to go to the two concerts. You will have to go to every class and take GOOD notes. He will give a pop quiz at some point throughout the week (big part of your grade). He gives soooo many extra credit points. Take him for your fine art credit.
He makes this class way harder than it has to be. Not very many points in class, so a couple bad pop quizzes and one average test will screw you. I do not recommend him.
I would not recommend anyone take his class. If your class is online, he WILL NOT post recorded lectures and don't ever depend on classmates to give you their notes so make sure you attend each class. He will not post his power points, pop quizzes are given through zoom meeting. He will not respond to your emails. Unprofessional and unorganized.
Unless you are interested in very old music, I would take a different course. Rick is a funny, strange guy but not the greatest at teaching. He does not post recorded lectures or respond to emails. Sometimes he is very rude too. Tests are way more difficult than they need to be. Not a blow off class if you want an easy A, & honestly very boring!
very get-to-the-point, pop quizzes every week. It's a very hard class. have to memorize 15+ classical songs.
DO NOT TAKE CLASS! Doesn't respond to emails, doesn't care about students, gives unnecessary hard tests. Does not post notes, says he will. record lectures and does not. I had surgery during this class and asked him for notes & he said, "No, it's up to me to get them from classmates." He just simply doesn't care about his students.
I took this class my freshman fall semester and figured it would be an easy A. There is a pop quiz every week so while attendance is not mandatory you have to go to understand the content, and if you miss a quiz he will not let you retake it - for any reason - so don't ask. Was rude and did not care about student situations. Did not like this class
Dr. Salonen is a very mellow and easy-going guy. Take great notes, there's a lot of material. Pop-quizzes are weekly, so show up to every class. You're not graded for attendance, but I would definitely attend every class for pop quizzes. Lots of bonus points, so try your best to get every one of them. It's not a blow-off class, so actually try.
This class was very easy, but I think it was because I have a little of a background in music. If you don't know much of music it can be challenging. He does weekly pop quizzes and they are very straight forward from lecture. Notes are essential. You cant access notes outside of class so make sure you attend. Overall a good professor. Fun class.
If you need an easy elective, this is not it. Do not take this class unless you have prior musical experience. Intersession is super difficult.
Extremely difficult tests. I am a 4.0 student and received a C in his class.
Exam questions were very tedious. You can't make up pop quizzes or exams! Quizzes are scored out of 8 but there are 10 questions. A LOT OF EXTRA CREDIT OPPORTUNITY.I've gotten a C/D on every exam and have an A in the class. make sure to study and you'll be good.
dr. salonen is a funny dude and is really straightforward with what material is on quizzes/tests, you just have to be sure to learn stuff on your own to be prepared. attendance isnt mandatory but he wont let you make up quizzes if you miss them, though he does offer lots of bonus opportunities. super easy material as long as you put in a lil effort
Why we need the toughest lock down browser for a music class I will never understand. One of those guys who thinks his class is the most important thing ever
If you are STEM looking for easy credit AVOID!! Take my word for it and other people that wrote reviews. If you are a music major or really interested in classical music then by all means take this course. But STEM people please avoid!
Very funny and knows his stuff. Tests are easy as long as you listen to the required music/pay attention. Great class
If you are taking this class for hours/credits DO NOT!!!! If your field of study is not music avoid this professor at all costs. For a basic music class he does listening pop quizzes weekly and he is the type of professor who thinks his class is soooo important as if we all wanted to take that class and has hefty size tests for a credit class.
Didn't respond to emails/made the class unnecessarily difficult. I've never taken a music class before, but he expects us to know everything and used excessive terminology even though its an intro course. Exams on Proctor U were a nightmare due to their constant technical issues. Ive only take the first test; got a low C despite studying for hours.
As a music major this class was still hard. Horrible explanations and sometimes blatantly wrong. Test are unnecessarily hard, as well as the quizzes, Attendance isn't mandatory but if you don't go you would be lucky to pass.
his lectures are very straightforward and the tests are honestly pretty easy if you study for hours, however memorizing 10-20 songs for an intro course is insane
This class can be tough, but with some effort and tools like unstuckstudy, you can handle it. Lectures are useful, just don't slack on attendance. Quizzes and tests are challenging, but there are plenty of bonus opportunities to make up for it.
