He is not too hard when it comes to his tests (if you attend lecture), but lectures are hell to get through. He is boring and mumbles to himself a lot.
He is knowledgeable and clear. If you attend lecture and lab and study your notes before the tests, you should be able to get an A without much difficulty. Most of the test questions are fair, but he likes to throw in a few obscure statistics, so pay attention to the numbers.
Listening to lectures and studying lecture notes will generally get you a B or C on his tests. You will have to hit to book to get that A (unless you already know the material)
He seems like a science freak. His lecture is usually pretty boring and he mumbles to himself quite frequently.
i dont know who commented on this and said weinstein was easy, but they must have not attended my lecture. we've had three tests so far and the average grade of the whole class on every one has been failing. if you dont have a thing for science, do NOT take this professor!!!
To the person below: The majority of Weinstein's kids DON'T OPEN THEIR BOOKS and therefore do poorly on the tests. I DID open my book and made a 92, 100, and 98 on those three tests. Enough said
I havent passed one test, and the class av. on tests have been 60-ish. I wouldnt advise you to take this class, with this professor if you are looking for ease, or intrest, b/c it has neither.
Total sandals and socks wearing hippie enviromentalist science geek. Lectures are interesting, as far as messenger RNA goes, and thows in issues of relevance to connect the material to real life. Posts notes, but you HAVE to go to lecture to get all the material. Studying is a must, so a good class if you care about your grades and learning.
I didn't even buy the book. I made A's on all the tests just based off of the notes on blackboard and the few lectures I went to. Lab is an easy way to boost your grade. Nice guy, easy class. If you suck at science, take it in the summer.
He is a hippie. He trys to be funny- sometimes is, sometimes not. Rambles on. His tests are tricky- even whenyou study for ever. read online balckboard notes- and do the chapter summary. has random quizzes.
This class was a lot harder than I expected. I studied forever on the tests, and did only decent. His lectures are not too interesting, but he does try to be funny. He puts notes on blackboard which is helpful because sometimes he gets off topic, but he ALWAYS adds to the notes. & Lab is what helps your grade.
I thought this class was awful. He rambled in every lecture class. I could never pay any attention because they were in no way interesting. I would study so much for the tests and never did that well. If I could give any advice I would say stay as far away from him as you possible could. I would never suggest him to anyone I knew.
If you have trouble sleeping it's a good class to take becuase it's a total snooze fest! ....and thank goddness for lab to help ur grade
Boring class but it is not an impossible class. Lab does help your grade alot though. If you memorize all the notes he puts on blackboard, you should do decent on the tests.
just totally bizarre class and lectures are totally bizarre, no other way to describe it, he does posts notes on BB, pretty much just memorize those, but he does give a few test questions in lecture, so it's super important to go, lab brings up your grade a lot and i hear he curves a lot at the end, but he won't admit it....just bizarre
he makes class interesting; funny in a nerdy-bio sort of way. Tests are rediculously hard, but if you go to class and pay attention (which is sometimes difficult) they aren't impossible. Is VERY passionate about global warming and evolution, expect a lecture about it every few weeks.
He is funny and makes amusing comments, but overall the class is boring. Lab is the grade saver. Tests aren't impossible, but you had better study. He gives you all the notes so that is nice, but definately study with your friends. It will really help you understand the concepts.
He is a hilarious man. If he's not cussing at the microphone that keeps going off, then he is using his hands to talk with...both which make him hilarious. He is a very easy teacher but the tests are a little more complicated than just reading the notes. He often slips stuff in the lectures that aren't in the notes so attending class would be smart
Weinstein kicks ass. His class is "difficult" if you suck at life. His lectures are a TAD boring, BUT if you go to them the reward is an A for the class. He makes his tests STRAIGHT FROM THE LECTURES. Literally, he goes back to his office after a lecture and picks like 3 questions from the LECTURE. How awesome is that!?
His class is easy if you attend the lectures. But you don't have to attend them because the notes are all online, but additional information is given at lectures. There are pop quizzes; half the points are mandatory and the other half are extra credit. He is hilarious and nerdy, and I enjoyed my class with him.
He's a good teacher, he shows slide shows in lecture, gets kinda boring, but he posts the essential parts of his lecture on blackboard and if you study those you'll be fine. Watch out for his super easy pop attendance quizzez!
He is nerdy and loves the subject. He likes to put questions on the exams that he mentioned once in class1 So paying attention during his boring lectures is important! He also likes to ramble during lecture.
All of his notes are on power point and he never uses the textbook.
Pretty good loves Biology and loves to answer question. He has a fun way of teaching the draws you into the subject. I would highly recommend you take one of his classes!!
Tests are pretty detailed -GET AN EASY TA-if you do your lab will bring your grade up...if not I'm sorry. You have to study for his test...you can't just know the overall ideas...so FIND A GOOD STUDY BUDDY.
Get an easy lab ta...his classes are extremly boring! He is very nerdy and loves biology..his tests are hard and you need to know the "process"..you cannot cram for these....i would recomend NOT taking his class
Tough class. I only missed 2 lectures and still felt lost. I recorded lectures, printed online notes, took notes in class, and still barely passed. He has a great sense of humor and makes himself available to students, but I just couldnt figure out how to study for the exams.
He was pretty funny and lectures weren't too boring. Although, this class really brought my GPA down. I've heard his 102 classes are a lot easier, but these tests in 101 are unbelievably detailed. Don't buy the book! He doesn't ever refer to it at all.
Very hard test. The TA is everything. If you have a choice get someone else. Don't get Guffey though i hear he is extremely hard at least he gives a curve Weinstein doesnt give a curve your grade is your grade.
Really knows what he's talking about. Keeps lectures interesting. If you go over your notes a few times before the test, you will likely make an A. I thought his corny jokes were funny. He's definetly dorky, but you can tell he really loves biology. I enjoyed his class. Oh, and labs are super easy!
Funny guy, and he's really nice too. Great teaching methods and his class isn't hard!
The class itself is difficult, but he is really great! Make sure you try to go to classes! He gives random quizzes that can really help your grade! He posts SOME of notes on BB, but not all.
very great teacher! i used to hate biology until i took his class. it was very stimulating because he made it interesting and easy to understand. his tests are not that hard if you study your notes. i would recommend him because even in a large class he allows people who are confused to ask ?'s right there in lecture. even if it is off topic.
Lectures are semi-interesting. His tests reflect notes and lectures. The book is mostly for clarity. Lab helps grade the most. Maintaining a B or higher in lab and passing the tests, can guarantee a B in the class. He also has pop quizzes in lecture that "help" your final grade if you are in between a particular grade. Overall, the class is good.
Great teacher. Extremely quirky. Every question on every test comes from something he said in lecture, so if you pay attention in lecture you won't need the book. Go to his office hours once or twice, just to ask him questions and talk to him. He's a really nice and interesting guy, plus once he learns your name and sees you in lecture you're gold
just go to class and take notes and every thing is really easy. I didnt even buy the book and i would recomend that you dont either.
Great teacher! very passionate about his subject. tests are easy if you go to class and take good notes.
Take him if you get the chance. He's quirky and out there but his class is easy and I returned my book after the 1st day because all the notes are online and you don't need it.
Useless class. Doesn't use the book, lectures are boring, and he isn't really good at teaching concepts well. Most people just memorized useless crap, but couldn't understand concepts. He's quirky, though, and his class isn't "hard" persay, but i didnt learn much at all.
I took Weinstein for Biology 101, 102, and signed up for 140. He loves the subject and I enjoyed the class. Lecture isn't necessary because he posts his notes, but he does sometimes pull test questions from random things in lecture. Great teacher overall. Take him if you can!
Granted he's not a bad teacher, his lectures were hard to comprehend because he wandered off aimlessly every day in class. He gave lecture notes however, they werent exactly the same as the powerpoint that he presented during class. Its very boring for people who are not interested in bio, but if your a science lover you prb wont find him hard.
Horrible at explaining concepts. Doesn't care if his students pass or not. He does crack jokes but it doesn't make up for his inability to teach. Just read the book yourself
He had power points for each lecture and would just go through them, reading off of them the entire lecture. It got to the point were reading the notes he posted on-line were more helpful than attending class. He won't tell you what kind of material you should expect on the test and with so much info covered, so study what you think you need to kno
Very boring class, couldn't keep my eyes open in half his lectures. Do not buy the book for this class, he pulls his tests straight from his lectures. Also try to pay attention in his lecture because he will put a random thing he said on the test that wasn't on the notes. Tests are hard, words some of the questions horribly. Do good in the lab!
His exams were hard. He is hard to follow sometimes in lecture but as long as you do well in lab you can get a pretty good grade. He doesn't use the book very much.
Attend lecture, pay attention, study before exams and you will do fine. He is funny, entertaining, and above all informative professor.
Alot of my friends had other teachers and I heard nothing but negatives from them about their professors. He is funny but not the easiest teacher in the world. The bio profs as a whole are hard but go to lab and do well and go to class as much as you can and take notes. You can make a C without much effort but for a better grade study a little more
He can easily get off track. He is constantly making jokes to himself. Teaches as if students already know the material.
His class wasn't too hard. Lectures aren't mandatory, but does give "extra credit" quizzes. Tests aren't too bad...at least half of the tests are from old/previous tests given. I recommend him. Book is useful if you don't attend lecture.
kind of pompous, told us he thinks that neyland stadium is a waste of prime real estate space...just acts like he is trying to be a quintessential professor from a movie or something. really gets annoying. do the lab work because his tests are so obscure.
Reminds me of a cross between Doctor House and Bill Nye the Science Guy. Extremely fun and quirky, and made me smile in class. Tests are difficult only if you didn't attend lectue and didn't study. The concepts are hard, and he wanders in his lectures, but pay attention and study and you'll be fine. Highly recommend going to lab.
Prof. Weinstein is a great person, but a very difficult Prof because he acts like we know everything when coming into lecture. He goes too fast, but after taking this class, you will know how to take notes and how to study for an exam. His exams can be difficult if you don't know the material. Study daily and study often. Be prepared for work. Go to labs as well.
Go to lecture- he gives extremely easy pop quizzes that count half for a grade half for EC. go to lab--boosts your grade. I failed the first exam and got A's on the next two bc I learned how to study. Use the book. Diagrams very useful. GO TO SUPPLEMENTAL INSTRUCTION.be prepared to work and learn a lot. enjoyed this class.
You do NOT need the book. He puts his notes online so print them off and take them to class and you should be ok. His test are kinda tough a question is either really hard or really easy. Sometimes so easy that you think to much and get it wrong. He gives random quizes at the end of class they are easy and you can use your notes= easy A on quiz
He makes jokes to himself frequently and gets off track. He posts lecture notes online so always print those out. His tests always have something that wasn't mentioned in the notes or lecture so pray beforehand I guess. No matter how long I studied for I couldn't get A's on the tests so do well in lab (I got a 99 average) because it's 20% of grade.
the material isnt too hard. hes funny and fair. tests arent hard at all. its a great class..i recommend.
You do not need a textbook, you need to study at least an hour a day to comprehend, you should probably take a different proffesor. our class average on three differny exams was below a 70
Always let's class out at least 20 minutes early. Classes are chill and if you study for tests and do decent on l
Love him. His sense of humor rocks, and his classes always get out early. You absolutely do not need the textbook. I enjoyed listening to his lectures just for the sheer amount of sarcastic comments he makes.
lets class out at least 20 minutes early every day. not hard if you go to class, study for a couple of hours for tests, and do well on lab quizzes. cool dude.
Not a bad teacher, he always lets class out and if you want to talk to him after class he is usually around. His tests are tricky and you must start studying for them before the night before. He gives 4 extra credit lecture quizzes so attend every lecture because in the end those quizzes help a lot. He does not curve at all. Recommended.
He is the best person to take for 140, he made my day everytime i went to class he is hilarious. He makes bio interesting, his tests aren't hard. I used my book to get a better understanding and the pictures really helped. go to class extra credit quizzes you will want later on(only curve he gives) lets out of class early.
Go to lecture and take notes. Supplemental Instruction helps out as well. Bio is my worst subject, but after taking this class, I'm much better at it. You cover a lot in the class so keep on track with it. You don't really use the book, just the lecture notes. Go to every one!! He's a super funny guy and knows you don't want to be there.
He's okay. I did fine on his tests. Didn't study except for the day before and ended up with a B+, so I could've gotten an A. He's funny, you could say, but I feel like lectures could have been more exciting. He put me to sleep, but I'd take him again if I had to take Bio 140 again.
Good instructor, very thorough. Attendance isn't mandatory, but you should go to every class and take good notes. Tests are taken directly from his lecture notes (provided), but he goes on tangents (ex., global warming) and you should pay attention because it will be on the test. Lab has a group project - bleh.
Exams are very hard but other than that not bad
His exams are SUPER hard, but he is hilarious with a quirky sense of humor. Go visit his office hours, he is very helpful and understanding if you can get past his semi-strange disposition. REALLY enjoyed his class! Make sure you study old exams for the finals as he takes plenty of questions from them!
very very hard. his exams are impossible to pass the class averages are around 50 at best. he goes off on random discussions that aren't helpful
I had a terribly hard time on his tests. His test questions came from unknown sources and the SI sessions were almost completely useless. I failed every test. His emails were harsh, hateful, and rude. Overall my least favorite teacher...wouldn't suggest ANYONE take his class.
Although the book isn't required, it's definitely helpful. He's a great teacher, but you actually have to go to class and pay attention to do well on the tests, which is something few students do. Also, doing the SI worksheets helps study for the tests. It was really easy to make an A in the class, even without the lab grades.
He sucks. Dont take him.
The averages for tests ranged from 66 to 70.I memorized the material and ended up with a B for my final grade. I am moving on to Geology next semester after being intimidated but apparently BIO 102 is easier than 101. Go to class until after the first extra credit quiz, then you do not have to show up. However, I went to every class.
Do not take his class. He doesn't care if you understand the material or not. He is very rude and doesn't care to offend people by talking about how the Bible is fake. His tests are hard and the questions are not as clear as they could be. His lectures are boring and will put you to sleep. Class average for tests was around 55. He sucks, stay away
This class isn't difficult if you attend SI and go to lecture. His lectures are kind of more like rants and they're pretty boring. The book isn't useful at all it confused me more but if you attend SI you'll learn everything. I ended up with an A but I attended SI and didn't miss a lecture. Lab brings you up alot!
I would not take Professor Weinstein again if I could go back. His class is not impossible but you MUST go to lecture and pay attention and then go home and drill the lecture into your head if you want to do well on tests! SI helps but don't fully rely on that. He randomly gives quizzes which help you in the end. You don't use your book!!
I enjoyed this class a lot. Don't buy the book, you won't use it. To pass you must review the lecture notes he gives you and the ones you write if you choose to attend lecture. SI helps a lot! My SI leader reviewed a lot of key points if you went to at least one SI every week. She even had past exams from former semesters to rely on just in case. I
Ok, this guy is insane! Nevertheless, he was an awesome professor. He was always full of energy. Even though no one would laugh at some of the jokes he would make, he would successfully rebound to get a chuckle. His tests were a little difficult, but if you review your notes every day, you'll do fine.
I had him for 101 and 102 and really enjoyed his class. It was challenging but as long as you go to class, take notes, and study you can do well. The book is useless. Get your hands on old exams if you can, he recycles questions. Going to class pays off because some of his easy in-class quizzes are extra credit! I recommend Weinstein!
I had Dr. Weinstein for 101 and 102, and I enjoyed his class. He was passionate, and if you go to class, the tests weren't too hard. Some questions tripped me up but that was my fault. If you go to class and get into the groove of his class, you'll do fine! He gives random quizzes that will help you if you get them all! I definitely recommend him!
Weinstein is quirky. Attend lectures and take notes. He gives random quizzes throughout the semester that end up helping you in the end! Study your notes and old tests and you will be fine good to go. The book is not useful for this class so don't bother to buy it.
Weinstein is a nice guy who tries to be quirky in class (it may not have always worked..but he almost always let out class early!). He posts notes online, but they don't always include all of the details he expects you to know. Print out the online notes and take notes in class and you'll have an easy A. I didn't even bother buying the book.
Weinstein is hard, and harder than he will admit, but genuinely wants you to learn. Go to lab, attend lecture, take notes, draw diagrams, and listen carefully while writing. He does post lecture outlines, but they only cover so much. Exams are very precise, but not impossible. Be ready to put forth some honest effort, but his class is manageable.
He is the worst teacher I have ever had. Do whatever you can to get a different teacher. I am a good student, never missed a class and got 70-76 on his test that i studied for weeks for. DON'T TAKE
This guy. Hopefully you know your biology before you take this class because his tests are super intense. It's a freaking bio 101 class yet is harder than my other higher level classes. His tests are way more in depth than his lectures, which is why the class average on the last test was a 62...I got a 50. Avoid this professor if you can!
Take this class if you would like to fail. His test are impossible to pass. I had to study every night for weeks and I still didnt pass with at least a B. Take a different teacher!!!!!
Show up to lecture and you'll do well in the class. You don't EVER use the book. He's pretty easy going just pay attention.
He is very boring to listen to in lecture. His tests are impossible. Take a different teacher!
This was the hardest biology class I have ever taken. The content wasn't hard. His test were just unbearable. He would ask questions on his test with different material than he taught with in class.
Tests are NOT easy so if you plan on taking an easy course, this is not for you. You have to research what you learn. The textbook is useful and you can only do well on his exams if you enjoy looking further into the meaning of the lecture. Overall, a good man and a bit of a challenge if you don't figure his exam style out. Taking him for 102. :)
Professor Weinstein is not a good teacher. I never attended his lectures because listening to him just confused me more. If you can get a different teacher, do it. I'm a fairly good student and I'm struggling in his class. Everyone says to get Rowe if you're looking for who to get!
Dr.Weinstein was a good teacher, but his class was not easy. Plenty of extra studying is needed to do well on the tests. The book helps you understand concepts and lecture notes help put it all together. Quizzes are extra credit so go to lectures! And if you get Sagar Utturkar for a lab instructor: beware.
This guy is unhelpful, and unclear on his tests.
This guy will bore you to death in lectures...he means well and all but never you anything but the choppy notes he post on blackboard...easier teachers out there! Beware of wiener
DO NOT TAKE Dr Weinstein! He is more worried about the bell curve of the grades rather than teaching his students.
If you're good at taking tests and take good notes and are sure to study them, this class is not a problem. A little time consuming but not too bad. everyone is exaggerating how hard it is. Just don't be an idiot and actually go to class and listen and you'll be fine! I never touched the textbook and you don't need a clicker so don't waste money!
This class is not as bad as everyone is making it out to be. Just don't be an idiot and actually attend class and take good notes and STUDY before the tests. The notes he provides plus the notes I took in class got me an A. It does take some time to study for the tests, but not a ton. I never touched the book or the clicker so save your money!
Bottom line - if you are here to be a real college student and try to learn, Weinstein is your man. This class won't be a handout, but this isn't high school and you shouldn't expect as much. Lectures are vast and comprehensive. Go to lecture - he provides you notes to add on to. Won't even need the textbook. His class is well worth it.
He's a funny lecturer and cares that you learn, but his tests are extensive and you will need to attend class in order to understand all of the concepts. I had to prepare for tests about a week in advance, but you just need to study and know your notes, and then they're easy. He takes random attendance quizzes which can be bonus for you. No book.
Dr. Weinstein is pretty awesome. His brief diversions and commentary during lecture definitely make the class entertaining. His explanations are excellent, and class generally follows the typed notes he gives you. Tests are quite fair, but there are always a few more difficult questions.
Overall, just a bad educator. Will not realize that students perform badly on tests because of his teaching, not their study habits. Ridiculous that this class is being this difficult.
Very difficult tests, doesn't go over information for the exams. Interesting teacher but doesn't realize he's the only one knowing the information he's covering.
I would NOT recommend this professor. I was GREAT in Biology before college, and now I am very confused. He teaches what he thinks we need to know, and then tests us on what we should know. He dumbs it down in class, and then uses the actual scientific terms on the test. STUDY THE BOOK! If you take him, good luck.
Before college I was not interested in biology. Then I had took Dr. Weinstein my first semester for biology 101. IT WAS AWFUL. He is not a good teacher- I went to the tutoring center many times because in lecture he was very general and didn't really focus on the material. Then, on test he was extremely specific with the questions. Bad class
He tries to make the lectures interesting and funny, but they just turn out to be more boring. The exams are ridiculous. You will not get an A on them because they do not follow the notes. Don't bother showing up to lecture, you won't learn anything
Dr. Weinstein was definitely the hardest professor I had this semester. His lecture is extremely boring and his tests are ridiculously hard. I didn't make a single A in his class and I studied really hard. DO NOT TAKE HIM UNLESS YOU HAVE TO.
Weinstein can be a good professor, but only if science really is your thing. If you have never had any experience with biology before or if you're just not a science person, you do not want to take him. His call is for people who are interested in science and can learn it easily.
Terribly difficult for a 101 course. His exams are difficult. I went in to each exam well-studied and feeling prepared and confident in the material, then I felt like the exams were half trick questions. Luckily, lab helps your grade and you will still make a decent grade even if you don't do well on the exams.
If you have a decent background in biology, you will do fine in this class. It's not terribly difficult, you just really have to study the notes. Some of the questions on the tests are tricky, but overall if you go to lecture and study the material, an A is definitely possible.
I did not have a good experience with Weinstein at all. He is very arrogant, and that really rubbed me the wring way. If science is not your forte that I suggest not taking him. I enjoyed science in high school, and I absolutely hated his biology class. The lab will boost your grade, but I still had to study a tremendous amount.
You will have to put in a lot of time studying if you want to pass. He is fair and everything that is on his test will be on his lecture notes that are on blackboard
All of the tests for this class can be found on studyblue.com, the questions are basically the same I crammed all night using just those tests & the flashcards also available & made an 88 when the class average was 75. lab is totally doable & will supplement your grade. it can be done. studyblue is the best
Such a funny guy! If you're awake and present for lectures, he'll crack you up! Also very helpful and nice during his office hours. This was the hardest course of my Freshman year. I studies my butt off and still only managed Cs on the exams. If Bio isn't your thing, I would try to avoid this class, if it is your thing, take him!
An amazing professor, provided that you're college material. If you walk into his class as a typical freshman thinking that everything will be like high school where teachers literally teach to the test then forget science and go join business school. REAL professors teach in order to educate you, not so that you get an A-that's YOUR responsibility
my fave
Do not take this class! He makes the lectures broad and seem like the material is easy to understand, but the tests are complex & detailed! I failed every test, but the lab grades balanced by grade & I made a B on the final by the grace of God! Take another professors!!!!
Weinstein is awful. I studied the book and the notes he put up on blackboard for four days straight, I also did not miss a class before my exams, and have made a 58 and 52 for my first two exams. His tests are not over the material he teaches, all his questions are trick questions. If you want to keep your GPA up your freshman year, do not take him
I took weinstein last year for this course. If you have taken ap bio, you will probably do fine. However, I only had freshman bio in high school, and this class was extremely difficult for me- i never had any idea what was going on. His notes and his lectures are extremely scattered and disorganized. Funny guy, but I could not learn from him!!!
Weinstein doesn't have a problem with a failing average on every exam. Or with you failing the class. He doesn't stay on track during lecture and he can be arrogant. He says you can go to his office hours, but it doesn't change anything. I don't recommend this class.
Weinstein was a really cool teacher. I had him for 101 and will be taking him for 140. You really have to pay attention and study in his class to do well, but I learned a lot of Biology, which is why you're in college. Take him, you'll learn a lot!
Weinstein is the worst professor I have ever gotten. He does not teach. I studied extremely hard for the first 2 exams and still failed both. I even attended every lecture. None of the material is in the book, his powerpoints, or notes. The average for the first exam was 64, for the second it was 68. I think he enjoys failing the entire class.
He is really not a good teacher. I mean yeah he definitely gives a lot of information. However, he won't help if you need it. Plus his exams are not over his notes at all. Not to mention the fact that almost every question is a trick question. I do not recommend this teacher unless you are trying to fail a class.
Dr. Weinstein is a great teacher. All of the questions on the exam can be found on his lecture notes, PowerPoint, AND THE THINGS he SAYS IN CLASS! I am a freshman. I have never taken a biology class but I managed to make 2 A/ 1B on his exams. You can not study the night ahead and expect to make a good grade. book is not needed for his exams.
Avoid his class! He is very hard to deal with if you are struggling. Tests are over minute details that are not in the notes or powerpoints or in the book. If you aren't already good at Biology DO NOT TAKE HIM
Loved this teacher! As long as you to class and take notes you will do fine! This tests are straight out of the lectures and he posts lecture notes online! His notes do not include everything so you still need to go to class. Great biology professor! Learned a lot!
Boring and tests you on minute details. Most test questions come from the notes, but half the questions are either poorly written or pertain to minute, insignificant details. Fine with a class average in the 60s in a 100 level class and doesn't curve. Studyblue helps some but avoid him if at all possible. Lab is a joke and lab TAs suck.
Fair warning: in his Fall 2013 Bio 101 lecture there were 177 students. Fewer than 10 ended up with an A, roughly another forty ended up with a B. There was no curve despite no exam averages above 70%. If you think you're better than 95% of your classmates at Bio, this course is for you, otherwise stay away.
His tests consist of questions that seem obvious only to him. Emailing him for help will get you no-where - he seems as though he doesn't aspire to help you learn.
Do not take him!!! His test don't coincide with his lectures. He says tests are easy but the way he words them makes them hard. Its like he purposely tries to trick you. AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!!
These negative comments about him are ridiculous. His test are literally from his his lectures on the powerpoints, which he posts online, and the lecture notes online. These students who are criticizing him probably barely attended class and only studied the night before the test. It is not a hard class if you STUDY. I made an A,and I hate science
I agree with 12/13/13 post. Weinstein isn't a bad teacher. Exams are straight from his lecture notes and he makes the notes. Study old exams for the final. Class is mandatory cause there are clicker questions. If I regularly attended class, did homework, and studied for my exams this class would've been an easy A. I got a C- in this class.
You do not need to read the textbooks for his tests, but you do need the textbook for online hw (bioportal). This class was my hardest class, but I managed to make an A, because I put a lot of studying into it. Take notes in class, and study the lecture notes that he posts online, and you should be fine.
This class was so hard. His exams are really hard, and the average for them were around the 60's. He said that labs help, but it doesn't help much when your failing the test. Avoid his class because it is almost impossible to pass .
Class is really difficult. I studied a week before the exams and still failed his tests. HE makes his tests impossible to pass because you need to know everything he said in class "word for word." DO NOT take this class because more than half the class fails the exams. Labs help your grade, but it does not manage to bring your grade up tht much.
Honestly, his class was very hard. Old exams were posted on study blue, and that is the ONLY reason I made an A. He's not very helpful, but DO THE ONLINE QUIZZES to help your grade. Obviously it's possible to make an A. I did and I suck at biology, but it is definitely a lot of work. Don't take him unless you have to, but you'll be fine if you do.
I wouldn't recommend this class to anyone.I feel people who say he's such easy probably have some interest in biology. But its 101 and he's better suited to teach a 300.I failed the 1st time and had to retake it with him. The 1st time I didnt try but the 2nd,I studied a week in advance, went to class and lab, still ended up with a C-.He's just awful
AVOID. Weinstein does not care about your grade, and his lectures make the material seem so easy, until you get the exam; and all the questions are so twisted and confusing. The worst teacher I've had in college. I did make a B, but that came with WAY more effort than necessary for a simple biology 101 class. do NOT take
Weinstein is a teacher who seems to be teaching simply for the money... he does not engage the students, and I had to study for insane amounts of time for his exams..usually 8-16 hours per exam. He hates on the book all the time and is not very clear in lecture-TAKE MCALVIN! she's so much better and actually cares for you to understand the material
he was a funny guy but his tests were rediculously hard. He doesn't make study guides for you either. DON NOT TAKE!
Easily best instructor this semester. Presents material in an interesting and engaging way. One of the few teachers who both rewards for knowing the material and makes it fairly straightforward to do so.
This guy is straightforward. he doesn't through any curve balls on the exams. If you go to lec and study every once in a while, you'll do great on the exams.
Weinstein is probably one of the best professors at UT. I've had him for 2 semesters. Attendance is not required, but he does give credit for coming to 80% of classes (via clicker). He presents the material in an understandable manner. People who complain most likely have not put any effort and just want the grade handed to them. W is very helpful.
I would NOT recommend to anyone. He comes off as a pretty okay teacher in the beginning. But then as the semester goes on, he gets ridiculous. He is a rather arrogant man; which would not be so bad if his tests weren't so hard. His exams are insane. I had an A in Lab & he gave me a D in the class AND I went to every class also. RUN!!!
This was a very hard class, to say the least, but it is doable. I normally had to study close to a week in advance to make a decent grade on anything. However, lab is easy and will save your grade, along with quizzes and participation. SO study hard, attend class, and you'll do fine.
I put minimal effort into this class and made an A. What you need to do is go to class, get your clicker points, take notes, and get on StudyBlue. He does not change his tests very much, and most of them are online in notecard form or PDF form, you just have to dig a little. He's a funny guy. I liked him overall.
AVOID HIM!!!! He is the worst teacher. Do not take him. His exams do not match up with the study guides at all. He doesn't care about you, and doesn't have any interest to help you learn. If you can avoid him, then TAKE SOMEONE ELSE.
His lectures are so boring, and it's pointless to go. All he does is read from his slides. His notes are not clear at all. He didn't seem very nice in lecture, and doesn't care about your grade or how much you are learning in the class. If you can take someone else because this class is horrible.
IF YOU CAN AVIOD TAKING THIS PROFESSOR AVIOD AT ALL COST. Richard does not care about you or your grade. he is not that helpful in his office hours, his lectures are boring, and are useless to attend, Personally if you are taking bio 101 at UTK i would advice McAlvin !
He is hilarious. I usually hate biology class, but he was entertaining. He gives outlines that are very helpful. Tests are easy if you look up material on StudyBlue (almost the same). His TA's grade the essay portions of tests (depends on the TA). Make sure you know what you are writing about.
Easiest biology professor by far. I slept through class and made at least a 96 on every test.
I took Weinstein for Biology 150. His lectures are pointless, except for the handful of clicker points you get during it. He rambles on and on, never making any sense. One nice thing is that he does post lecture notes on Blackboard everyday. These notes will help a little bit for tests, but not enough to get above a C.
Worst lecture I've ever attended. I love biology, but his lecture puts me to sleep. I literally built my schedule for nest semester and researched next year's housing in this lecture . I only come for clicker points!
This teacher is a must take for any bio class. He only tests over what he talks about in lectures. He cares about your grade and dropped a whole half of our test when the class did bad on it. His test are very to the point questions and if you study a little you will do good. He doesn't try to trick you on tests like other bio professors. TAKE HIM.
Dr. Weinstein is a great guy. Yes the class is touch, but his lectures inspired me to major in Biology. Yes the class was difficult sometimes, but i know plenty of people who didn't try, then complain about their grades. This is not high school, welcome to college try and you will do fine.
Easy teacher if you come to class and take notes. What he says in class is on the exams. By far my easiest teacher this semester! Makes jokes that are funny if you get his humor! Great guy and easy to talk to when asking for help! Only have to come to 75% of lectures to get attendance credit! But come to class or you will miss something!
He's definitely not the best at explanations. Test questions are tricky, and make sure you don't just know facts. Very opinion oriented class. He asks questions about the way he perceives things. You don't really need the book, and the online assignments and in class work help your grade a ton.
His class is tough, but he teaches it well. Lectures are boring and he posts the notes online, but clicker points are in every class. Tests aren't bad if you study for them using his lecture notes - he basically hates the book and the only thing it's good for is Mastering Biology quizzes. Overall, a good class!
He does not always do a good job at explaining things in lectures, and he tries to make jokes that aren't very good, which makes the lectures hard to sit through. He seems like a decent bloke though.
Do not take this teacher. Rude responses to emails concerning grades. Hard to follow in lectures. Take someone else.
He does not answer questions, and he does not like helping his students. He responds to emails rudely, if he responds. He hates being wrong. I even read the textbook, but it still wasn't much help for the class. He likes to do things his way. If you want to learn, this is not the class for you. It's not impossible to pass but hard to get an A.
He isn't a bad professor he just gets off topic sometimes. Sometimes he is hard to hear and he slightly rambles. He will say andor put some things in lecture slides that are important for tests that you wouldn't know if you did not attend class.
Go to class and read over the notes he posts and you will do fine. I put little effort into this class and got an A so it's not impossible. Also, look over old tests - he likes to reuse questions. I normally read textbooks for all of my classes, but I think for this class it is probably best not to bother.
Interesting lectures and seems interested in teaching, but tests area long shot from lecture and textbook material. My class average was consistently in the 50's and 60's and we only got lectured about not knowing how to study and how we didn't deserve a curve.
Weinstein knows what he's talking about and will help if you ask. Had him for a morning lecture and he never failed to having me nodding off to sleep. Talks very slowly and goes off on tangents. Drink tons of coffee and you should be fine.
Weinstein is not a professor I would ever take again. You had to go to class, not because the lectures helped, but because of those stupid clicker points. I was prepared for a terrible grade, but he does curve which helps tremendously.
The class is not too difficult, but he is not helpful whatsoever. If you ask a question prepare yourself for an extremely sassy and rude response. If you like learning on your own then take him. If you want him to teach you then do not.
