First night he asked who wants to be here & who has to be here (almost all were taking it for CORE). Then he graciously took that into account and made everything clear, simple, & relevant to non-economics people. Very good teacher!
funny and clear, a great teacher for non majors!!

Wonderful! Funny, articulate, clear...great!
Funny man. He is pretty easy. But you must go to class because all notes are inclass. But there are only 3 test and they are easy. And he gives insane amount of extra credit.
He is really clear, but you do have to go to class....if you go to class and take his notes, along with a couple of SI sessions, an A is not that hard.
Just show up to class and take notes....book not needed
He has typed, clear notes up everyday. Simply show up for notes (and attendence which he take about every other week). Very clear and knowledgeble. No nedd to use the book.
Good guy, easy class, good retention rate. Dry humour, but isnt a stickler. Already retired but came back to teach part time. He seems like he is coasting. Would reccomend.
really funny, easy teacher jus have to attend class regularly.
great professor, starts every class out with a joke. i went to class and took notes and got very high A. pay attention in class and your set.
Awesome teacher. The way he presents the info makes it easy to understand. No trick questions or anything. He gives reviews that can be answered by the notes. 2 thumbs up.
The best teacher I have taken at UTSA.
He is a great professor, and he really gets excited about microeconomics somehow. Also his test are EASY if you go to class and take notes. I sold my book back half-way through the course because he covers everything that's on the test in class, I never even needed the book!
easiest class i have taken by far...great professor...Make sure you go to class and take good notes. Study your notes for the test and you will be fine. You dont even need to read. His tests are 35 multiple choice questions. Take him if you need this class. A++++++++++++
Outstanding professor youd wish there were more like this. Go to class take notes and you'll be fine (A or B) depending on your knowledge retention. test are 35 questions multiple choice plus he tells a pretty good joke at the begining of every class. One of the best professors ive had yet.
He is a great teacher. This was the second time i took this course bc i had gotten a D the first time and now that i retook it with this teacher i have an A big difference. Your dont need the book. Just go to class take notes. The online quizzes he gives are super easy.
This is an awesome professor. He gives you the notes straight up on the overhead. The online quizzes are extra credit and help your grade a lot. Just attend class, copy the notes, study a little and it's an easy A!
dr. welch is an awesome professor. his tests are directly from his lectures. highly recommend.
This class was a blast. If you are planning on taking this class, I recommend you to take this teacher because you will learn and you are guaranteed an A+. Guaranteed!!! He gives you possible of 18 points on tests and reviews for his tests. What more can you ask...just take him.
The most difficult part of his class is remembering the attendance quiz passwords. IF you take notes at each class, you'll have no problems at test time.
great teacher, easy class.
His class rules, dont buy the book, and go to class and take notes and remember to take the quizes and actually study before the exam and you will recive an A. I actually learned and like Eco.now
this guy is the****. easy class, easy to listen to. explains everything and answers all your questions, easy A if you take notes.
I failed his course because I never went. This course will always have a huge class. Not much discussion since the class is so big. Don't buy the book.
I really don't care for the subject matter, but he is a really good professor. He starts off every class with a joke, and he gives very helpful reviews before each test. Attendance is very important.
he is such a great teacher, he explains so clear and so well... i recommend everyone to take him...
This guy is awesome--easy A starts off class with a joke. possible 18 points of extra credit through the homework "problem" and attendance quizes. very entertaining/interesting to listen to. must take notes in class and study notes to do well on exams. makes you enjoy learning economics.
Welch can be a little boring and longwinded, but in the end he's a great professor. He was very clear on the concepts and test material. He has (very EASY) daily quizzes on webct. Don't buy the book, you won't use it. Go to class and you've got an A or B. Good professor!
very easy class just make sure to take all notes or get them from a friend. attendance quiz days are a must to help out your final average.
So easy! Don't buy the book! All you need are the notes from class!
Only three tests including the final. Tests are very in-depth, specific and confusing. Don't buy the book, you don't need it. Has extra-credit quizzes for people who show up to class. Very boring, cracks a lot of jokes. You have a lot of memorizing to do to be prepared for his tests. Good luck.
easy class, great professor. just show up to class and take notes, do attendance quizzes and you should easily get an A. Dont need the book since tests come straight from class notes.
Easy. Never bought a book, and got an A. Dont go to class, just get the notes and study them for each test. They are the test. Tells lame jokes (mainly Aggie jokes), one every class. Looks like Colonol Sanders.
Just take notes, that's all you have to do. It also helps to go to the SI. He's a nice guy, starts off every class with a joke. If you go to class he gives out attendance quizes (about 12) that add up to 12 extra credit points at the end of the year. Only 2 tests, so don't screw up if you can help it.
Dr. Welch was a savior to us out of field majors who were required to take his class to graduate. I don't get economics and I don't want to, but he recognized that was the case for many and he made it as clear and painless as possible. I actually learned alot in the class that I still remember 5 years later too :)
He always tells a little joke or story before class. Explained the material well. You definitely don't need to buy the book because all the tests are over lecture material. Good class.
i fell alseep in this class after the morning joke. but hey who seriously take an 8am eco class and can stay awake? but he was a good professor.
I like the professor. even though he speaks soft, you can definitely understand him clearly. you don't need to buy the text at all, just go to class and take notes everyday and you would do fine!! he's really easy and really cool, and he would definitely help a lot if you need the help, also he has a TA and an SI, so you have more help...
Do not buy book. Test is from notes.
He's fun. He tell a daily joke before lecture, and explains the material well. I didn't use my book at all, just studied from the notes and got an A. He'll post a review sometimes. Overall great class.
decent professor, makes aggie jokes, tests a kind of challenging but straight forward, no BS
Great class! Show up and take notes and you're set. Didn't need the book at all. His lectures are very clear and to the point. Great teacher overall!
Do not buy book! The professor is extremely boring, but not too hard because gives a lot of extra credit. HOWEVER, he bumps the grading scale up to a 95 being an "A" because he gives so much extra credit.
You should go to class for the attendance quizzes, they'll make a difference between an A and a B. Gives extra credit, tests are straight forward. Wears goofy colors that clash, kinda looks like the Colonel but skinny.
Made economics easy & fun for all. Go to class, take notes, do the extra credit quizzes and you should have an A. Very straightforward class & tests- but there aren't a lot of questions on them, so if you miss 1 or 2 questions there goes your A. Didn't need to use the book.
He likes his subject, and makes it interesting(tells a joke everyday). Very helpful, if you go to him during office hour! Tells you exactly what you need to know to do great in his class; doesn't rely on the book.
His brain teasers are fun.
Probably one of my favorite classes ive taken at UTSA. Professor Welch has a great sense of humor and tells a joke everyday before he lectures. Gives alot of extra credit and tests (30 questions each) come straight from the lectures so I reccomend attending all of the classes. Overall a fun class and a good professor
Great professor. If you go to class and take the notes you will be ready for the tests
This teacher was cool. I had NO INTEREST WHATSOEVER in taking economics but he made the subject clear and intersting. Of course, it gets a little boring sometimes, but overall it was cool. I would take him again.
Boring professor. He knows economics inside and out but be prepared to write a lot of notes! Do not take afternoon classes. You must study and make sure you know every single thing. I'm re-taking again. :( Tries to be funny w/ jokes, I was bored to my death!
I don't know what else to say besides go to class, take notes word for word, study notes, do extra credit and make an easy A. I made a 100 on one of his exams, but I studied. I feel I learned a lot too. Funny guy.
Easy class, just make sure you go to class and take notes.. Hard to stay awake sometimes.. He likes to draw pictures of beer, make sure to study, gives a good review
Pretty simple class. Just go and pay attention and make sure you ready the chapters and you shouldn't have a problem.
Really makes economics interesting. It is necessary to go to class and read the textbook. Economics is a hard subject but he breaks it down and makes it less challenging.
TAKE NOTES!! GO TO CLASS!! random attendance quizzes. the tests aren't long or even super hard you just really need to study. He's funny and tells a little joke (usually aggie jokes) before every lecture.
Well, not too bad overall economics. But, really hard to get an A. His grading scale is A: 95-104% B: 85-94 average and so on...The extra points come from "Extra credit" Quizzes (12 a Semester) But don't be fooled, they aren't extra credit at all...they're necessary if you want an A. Notes are necessary!!! Tests are TrIcKy! He's a good guy overall
Easy A! if you go to class, do all extra credit and take good notes you'll do fine. Tests are based off notes, but if you dont study tests will be hard. Random online attendance quizzes gotta go to class to get pswd. VERY EASY quizzes they are based off the notes from that day! Good prof.!
He is super easy. However, with that said, this class is HARD to get an A in. His grading scale is 95 and above for an A. If you want to just get through economics then I would recommend taking him. If you need an A then I suggest you look at other economic professors. Don't need the book even though he says you will need it. Hes a nice guy too.
This was a very simple class. Attendance was not mandatory but he didn't go off the book so it would be hard to do good if you don't listen to the lectures. Tests are very straight forward and he provides a review.
He is a great professor. You don't need the book if you go to every lecture, and take notes.Take him if you wanna learn something. But if you want to get a easy A then don't take him. His grading scale of A is 95 and above out of 106. In other word, you have to do the attendance quizzes, and get most of the homework questions right(they are 6).
Easy class. If you want good grade, you have to go to class because his tests are based off his notes which are super clear. He gives points for attendance and has a few quizzes but all in all, easy B for me. And his jokes are killer.
Awesome Professor. This is an easy A as long you come to class and take notes because the tests are based off them and he only writes on the overhead what you need to know for the test. The grade scale is set a little high but as long you as you study your notes and do all the assignments, which are easy, you will do very well.
I love Mr. Welch :) He's an awesome teacher and really teaches. He is clear and his tests are super fair and based on only the information he teaches. He has some attendance quizzes so you should go, but it's worth it. The class just flew by for me. He just reconfirmed the fact that I want to be a ECO major. I currently have an A.
If you have ever wanted a teacher who teaches only what you need to know for the test, this is him. Review your notes for the test. Book is useless despite what he says. He tests from lecture only. Attendance quizes with password in class so you have to go if you want an A. Grading scale kinda high but an A is not out of reach at all.
Despite what people have said here, in my experience, I would get the textbook, particularly the one with the study guide- that apparently will help you A LOT, but I never got it. Grading scale is high, but gives plenty of attendance quizzes to help raise your grade. Attend class and take notes- he's a good teacher.
no need of the book as long as u take good notes, high grade scale but DO all the quizes and he will give round grade next letter grade, GO TO ALL his classes if u wanna do good bc he gives many pop quizes, awesome professor
Welch is a nice guy. Always telling jokes before class and presents his notes in a very organized way which makes for easy studying. Test questions are not tricky, come straight from the notes. Had attendance quizzes every once in awhile, and grading scale is higher than normal. But easy A if you study. Didn't crack the book all semester.
Sweet old man, really. Tells jokes and gives easy tests/quizzes. He's really passionate about economics and wants everyone to do well. Highly recommended for this boring class.
Very clear, very boring, and easy enough. I would take him again. He does tell funny Aggie jokes at the start of every class.
Sure he tells a joke every class, but this class messed up my GPA big time. If you're NOT an Eco major or care about your GPA, take someone else. Every single question you answer on a test/quiz affects you greatly. I can see this class being a walk in the park if you're an eco major-- I'm not and got tutoring, but still struggled. Nice guy though.
I have attended every single class, taken the notes like a scribe, have study group of about 6 people who all maintain 4.0 GPAs. With all that said, it has been extremely difficult to maintain a B as he requires a 95 average to get an A for the course. If you take this course, plan to get a C and only take it if you do not care much for your GPA.
If you don't get a B or better in this class you shouldn't bother going to college. Guy gives 12 extra points for attendance, 4 more on top if you have 8 or more attendances, and 6 more still in a worksheet extra credit. Yes, an A is a 95 or above - but a B is still an 84 or above. Tests are all multiple choice. Didn't open book once - got an A
Worst Professor Ever! His grading scale is completely absurd. To get an A you need a 95! My 94 is a B! He gives attendance quizzes online so if you don't understand his incoherent ramblings you don't get credit for being there. He cannot control the number of students he has. Between his mumbling and everyone talking I get nothing. ALL BOOK!!
He's a great guy. He also has a great since of humor that makes his lectures a bit easier to sit through, but he rambles quite a bit about random things. To me, he teaches the material in class, but leaves out most of the terminology. Make sure you study the terms in the books well before testing. But, remember there's only 2 test and 1 final.
Everyone is complaining about his grading scale. The class is worth 106 points and those six points come from quizzes. As long as you make 90s on your exams and do the one question quizzes you'll get an A JUST LIKE IN ANY OTHER CLASS! It's not like you have to make a 95 on his exams to get an A. Great Professor, super fair and very clear!
Ok, so this year he changed it up, you get 10 attendance quizes which is equivalent to bonus points, and if you get 7 of the 10 right, he will bump you up one letter grade, i had an 87.5 average which was rounded up to a 88 and thus i got 7 of 10 quizzes right so i got an A in the class, Awesome teacher, don't really need the book, attend class!!
This is a great professor, he gives you straight forward notes and that WILL be what is on the test. He gives reviews before the test and is very nice and loves teaching and will be willing to help you out however possible. Eco is not easy in general but he puts the info out in a clear, understandable and relatable way.
Nice Professor but if you aren't good at economics DO NOT take him, it will be hard. His tests are about the lectures in class but they can still be hard.
Tests questions came straight from the lectures and some from the book. Had attendance quizzes that counted as extra credit towards your grade that were helpful too. Wish it would have been a little more challenging but overall a good class.
I love Dr. Richard Welch. He's a great professor, and I learned a lot from his class. He makes funny aggie jokes and he lays out the material clearly. I'm going to miss his class! Wish he taught macro! Study your notes and refer to the book if you need additional help. ALWAYS go to class. work hard, study and you'll get an A! Best prof at UTSA
He's straightforward, and most of the questions come from his lectures. He is very organized and clear, suppose he had to be to get a Ph.D. Loved him. He changed his grading system, so it's 90%+ is an A. Gives extra credit. Just come to class. He's very knowledgable and wants students to succeed. Gives tons of real life examples. Great professor
You HAVE to go to class! 2 exams one final, ql's, and extra credit quizzes you want a good grade? go to class and study
Easy class if you atten and take notes. You get random day 1 question attendance quizzes which give you extra credit. Some material is dry but not the professor's fault. He gives some great real life examples of the material he is covering. 2 exams and the Final. 4 QL assignments.
Professor Welch is awesome! His lectures are interesting and the notes he lectures with are the key to doing well in the class. If you go class, take the notes you will do great in the class
They should call him professor Mumbles. Super hard to hear and you REALLY need to hear what he's saying. The class isn't as hard as it could be but it's still challenging. Definitely go to class.
Dr. Welch is very knowledgeable and great at explaining and giving examples related to the material. The only thing is, there's only 2 exams and the final, if you do bad in one exam, it would be hard to recover from it. take notes and go to class every time. I agree with those people, he has a low voice and no interaction in the class.
Dr. Welch is so sweet and funny. He gives 10 bonus points that are attendance quizzes and if you get 7/10 correct, he'll bump borderline grades. His exams aren't difficult if you go to class, copy his notes, pay attention, do the review and study. Book isn't required. In class, he gives thorough real life examples that makes everything clear.
Dr. Welch is such a sweet guy. He loves helping his students during office hours and answering your questions. He starts his class off by telling a joke to lighten the mood. His tests are easy if you know the material, but you only have 2 exams and a final which can hurt you badly. Definitely go to si sessions. They help a lot. Don't need the book.
His TESTS ARE LECTURE BASED. Enough said. Dont need to even read, just study notes from class and do the review
Cool guy
You really DONT need the textbook for his class, ALL of his tests are lecture-based. If he has a SI leader, attend the sessions! Those are really helpful and you will definitely be able to pass with an A. He gives out attendance quizzes which count as extra credit points (attend class). He is HANDS DOWN one of the best professors for Econ.
My favorite professor! He is such as sweet man. Lectures are very interesting but they can be boring if econ. is not your thing. He gives real world examples that help you understand the material a lot better. Tests ARE lecture based. If you take good notes in class you will do fine on the tests, but you do need to study. Wish he taught macro.
Best economics professor I ever had!!!! Don't need to buy textbook.
You are dumb to pass this professor up. He only offers 3 tests, including the final, but if you show up to class and write down what he puts up, you'll automatically ace the tests. He always cracks a joke before each class to brighten the mood. Works with you and responds back to emails relatively quick. Does not require the textbook.
He begins class with little jokes usually about Aggies, I mean enough said. Kinda interesting sometimes but tbh I never went to class because I found it boring. Only three test and a two part Q assignment. Test are worth 83% of grade so watch out. He will help if you ask for it. He is nice and lenient so I guess thats a plus. Show up take NOTES!
Great professor with great knowledge of his field. Tests are lecture orientated but tends to go on about some random story no related to topic. Extra credit quizzes are must.
Professor Welch is a great professor. He starts off the lecture with some good jokes and brain teasers. His lectures are kind of boring so you have to make sure you pay attention because all the tests are lecture based. Overall, he is a great professor.
Super boring lectures but super easy class. The tests only come from lecture notes so no need for the textbook.
Super boring lectures but super easy class.
Doesnt give any homework but randomly gives quizzes with answers taken directly from the lecture that you can only access with a password he gives at the beginning of class. Lectures are for the entire period and its a lot to write. Only approx. 3 tests all year. Doesnt use book in class, but book would be needed to study for a high grade on tests
Just take good notes and study them before tests. Always show up to class because he randomly checks attendance. He's really cute and old and always starts class with a joke about Aggies
Professor Welch is a great professor. He starts his lectures with a joke or brain teaser. He posts his lectures online, but go to class because he has attendance quizzes randomly throughout semester. They're easy. His exams are 45 MC and 5 T/F. You don't need the book.
The easy way would be to just go to class and take notes on everything he writes and get the extra credit from pop quizzes. I however waited till the end of the semester to start trying. I skipped EVERY day and watched over 10 HOURS of his posted lecture videos in a row to learn everything before the final LOL made a B tho
Go to class because the notes are word for word what is on the tests. Does 10 random attendance quizzes to help your grade. He is such a nice professor. He does such a good job at explaining the material.
I'm not a business major but had to take his Eco class. I don't have any complaints towards him. His class is very straightforward. There are random quizzes that you can only get the code for by showing up to class. At the end of the semester, if you get 7/10 of the quizzes right he adds points to your grade. This helped me bc it took my 88 to a 90
Great professor!! The tests are very lecture heavy so show up to class. If you go to every class and listen, you will do fine on the tests!
Welch is the perfect professor to take for micro. His tests are exactly the notes he gives you during his lectures. He is hilarious and breaks everything down so simple. TAKE HIM IF U CAN!
Difficult class but as long as you study what he say in his lectures and take notes you to you will get an A. Gives extra credit for attending lectures.
Well, well, well, if it isn't my most savage professor. He's very funny with many stories. He sometimes puts brain teasers up to get us going. The exams are all notes heavy, but there were only 3 in total, 2 other big assignments, a too-easy-to-fail quiz & barely any extra credit. His lectures are online as well, but I urge you to actually attend.
I do not recommend this teacher. Maybe he was good to other people but i loathed this class. He talked way too low, everything seemed unorganized and the SI and TA sometimes didn't know what was going on. I thought this was going to be an easy B but i was wrong. 10 random quizzes so show up when you can. There's way too much material.
Dr. Welch is a very easy professor for Microecon. He speaks very slowly, posts his lectures online, and has office hours both before and after class. You can most definitely pass by just watching his lectures on BB (which he always posts) but the relaxed vibe of the class is worth showing up.
PLEASE TAKE HIM!! Best micro professor. You can go to class and write down the notes or watch the lecture videos from home. His notes make it easy to fill out the reviews and the reviews do a GREAT job at preparing you for the tests. Econ is hard but Welch makes it easy. Not hard if you study the reviews. Take him if you want a good chance for A/B
10 random attendance quizzes that are used as extra credit. The lectures are sometimes a bit boring and hard to hear, but he posts every lecture video online. I bought the textbook but used it maybe two times just to help me study. The reviews that he posts for the tests are extremely helpful. Take good notes and study and you'll be fine.
You don't have to go to class because he posts a video of it. He has 3 exams that are 85% of your grade and doesn't give extra credit. His tests aren't from the book they're lecture based.
Professor Welch is funny but he is old. His lectures are very long and boring but it is important to take notes! Attendance is not mandatory but I PROMISE YOU, you will wish you had gone to class to get the extra credit attendance. This class was extremely difficult for me. Use the book to expand his lectures and use the Mindtap to practice.
Dr. Welch is hands down my favorite professor. He is caring, funny, and explains things well. Lectures can be boring but show up to class for attendance quiz passwords and DO ALL OF THEM. They are extra credit and if 7 are done right, he will round a borderline grade. No mandatory textbook but really beneficial, Econ is hard but do SIsessions/STUDY
This guy is amazing. If you need to take Micro, most definitely take Welch. Just study your lecture notes and youre guaranteed an A or B, depending on how much you actually study.
Prof. Welch is a great dude for Micro, I switched into his class at the beginning of the semester, and thought it was a easy transitions. Make sure to go to the SI sessions for exam reviews, and study lecture notes if you want a good grade on the tests. Also enjoy Prof. Welch's jokes, there the best.
Dr. Welch was one of the funniest and nicest professors I've had. He really cares about his students!! He gives three tests with reviews and you can easily find all the answers in your notes. Attendance is mandatory because he does randomly assign quizzes that have passwords you can only access in class but they are very easy. Sweet guy! Take him!
Hes a really nice teacher that tries to make class fun and enjoyable. The class was a little difficult just because theres only 3 major grades being tests. If you study hard you should be fine but you dont need the textbook I never used it.
Prof. Welch is a great teacher, his teaching style makes economics much easier to understand. He gives random attendance quizzes for extra credit. His exams are all lecture based and he gives a review which is very helpful! His exams arent too difficult, as long as you attend lecture and take notes you will do fine.
He records and posts all lectures on bb. His class is easy and straightforward. Tests are easy, based entirely on lectures, and he posts reviews on bb for them. Only downside is that he is very monotone so not very inspirational. Nonetheless, he explains topics very well and makes them easy to understand. Very available outside of class too.
