Tells alot of jokes...makes a required course fun
He is somewhat crass and thinks he is funnier than he really is, but he grades very easy if you follow directions well and do the required work.
it's an easy class, and he's very clear about the course material. tells lots of jokes and stories, which can go to far, sometimes.
He is ok. He grades easy, but he can be really negative at times. He kinda gets on my nerves because he tries to make jokes and most of the time they are not funny.
I took him in the summer and I would recommend him. He grades fair and tells a lot of jokes.
very annoying, but harmless
He can't teach and only gets joy from putting down students. His voice is annoying to listen to and he is the only communication professor that I have ever seen that is completely unable to use and classroom technology.
He gets off topic very quick, but he's funny in a cheesy way. If you want an A, take this guy, but I warn you be ready to sleep.
He was AWESOME. Hes a cool guy that was a hippie back in the day and isn't a Nazi when it comes to grading papers. He has take home quizzes and gives you all the questions that will be on the final before you take it AND you go over it the final day of class. If you like baseball talk with him about that. He likes the Braves
VERY VERY LIBERAL. He HATES Bush. If you are anywhere near a Republican or even like Bush, beware! It was a daily Bush bashing. Now that I made that clear, he was so so easy. Maybe because it was the summer time, but it was simple to make an A. Grading is 25% Attendance, 25% Participation, 25% Weekly quizzes, and 25% final.
He was so awesome. By far the best teacher ever. All he wants is for his students to succeed and he does all that he can for this to happen. He gives very detailed exam reviews that help sooooo much. He is a great professor all around.
One of the easiest classes I ever took, but you need to be able to speak in front of a crowd. Pretty nerve racking at first but you get used to it. He is very monotone though, some people even fall asleep in class as he drones on in that boring voice. If you can handle a boring teacher the class is really easy.
Great guy! Took him in the summer and grade was based on attendance, 1 speech, and final. Gave a very detailed review for final! You don't need the book if you go to class and take good notes. Hates marriage and Bush. Big Hippie. Best prof!
Cool older dude! 60's live! Super easy class! Got to read the lyrics to "Sympathy for the devil" in front of the class. Total "liberal" but not a bad guy.
Awesome professor! He grew up in the sixties (although he swears he never inhaled), and hates his ex-wife. He makes you confident about speaking in front of people. He also has take home quizzes and is very lenient with his grading system. My syllabus is titled "Ye Olde Syllabus", just to give you an idea of how crazy he is. Awesome professor!

THIS GUY IS AWESOME!! HE'S HILARIOUS AND GETS THE MATERIAL THROUGH TO YOU. ITS MAINLY A DISCUSSION CLASS SO SHOW UP AND PARTICIPATE. GRADES EASY AND IF YOU DO THE STUDY GUIDES YOU'LL GET AN A ON THE EXAM. QUIZZES ARE TAKE HOME SO THEY'RE REALLY EASY TOO.
Easy A; boring class; takes attendance- part of grade
Horrid Liberal. And as I am pretty liberal that's saying alot. He is incapable of using the school's technical equipment, does not reterm ideas from the book so that all might understand, which is so important in a comm class. Completely aloof. Hated him! DO NOT TAKE WEST. HE BLOWS AT TEACHING! YOU'LL BE TEACHING YOURSELF!
Great sense of humor - always available and ready to help. He really cares about the students. Doesn't load you down with a lot of work. An old hippie who believes in peace and love and obviously loves what he's doing. One of the best.
Okay you only have four take home quizzes, three presentations, three short papers and a mid-term and final. Class is a tad boring at times but go to class do the few things he asks and you will do fine. Textbook is needed for quizzes because most come right out of the chapters.
West, is a great guy but when it comes to teaching be on your game. YOu must go to class because his test are over what he says, now you can find some in the information in the book, but listening and taking notes is much better. He has take home quizzes so you have to take this guy. Very easy to me I made an 98.
very boring, goes on and on about nonsense issues that have nothing to do with the class. It's not hard to pull a good grade, he's an easy grader and there aren't very many assignments.
Dog i love this professor he is so sarcastic its so funny! but he really does know what hes talkin about! and make sure you participate in his class beacuse he is willing to do more for students who show interest!! trust me! but on a cool tip he a really fun guy! Just make sure you show up to class then its a easy A
Great sense of humor; really knows his stuff; mostly lecture, very little with the book; take home quizzes and participation points; gives study guide so you know exactly what is on midterm and final exam; easy A if you show up and take notes
fun teacher, class is really easy just go and take notes, take home quizes and easy test, easy A
Great Professor, gives a study so you know exactly what will be on the exam. However do participate because it's 20 percent of your grade and can make your grade suffer I went from an A to a B. Overall class is very interesting you wont regret it trust me take him.
Took his class to fulfill my core a while back. He's the kind of guy that'd be great to get to know, he's very eccentric and "groovy". You may not learn a whole lot in this class but you will be laughing & trying to figure him out. Reminds me of the dean from Accepted, same mentality but way more laid back. Minimal effort still gets you an A.
He is a good teacher.. i dont think that he makes you believe what he thinks although some kids do. hes funny sometimes and we have some good discussions that are on topic, and yet interesting. I liked his method of work. He gave take home quizzes, we got 4 and this was a good way of boosting your grade because everything is right there in the book
LOVED HIS CLASS!! although attendance was mandatory his class was always interesting. he was very understanding if you were absent, late, or had to leave early. One test and the final, and 4 take home quizzes. Of course presentations. TAKE HIM
he is funny-****, **** comments, but if you are open minded he wont bother you much. Take him if you can, although he will talk incesstantly about his failed marriage and is basically antimarriage, the class is easy. Once again, TAKE HIM!!
Prof West is easy grader... I made a speech with out conclusion and still passed. He could be really funny sometimes. just go to class and do the speech then you will get an A...
He is hilarious and so hot!! He was easy going and was an easy A lus i learned alot
This class is pretty hard. He doesn't use the book during lecture at all, but half the quizzes and tests are from the book. Nobody in our class made A's after the first quiz. There were only 4 B's out of 95 on the midterm. There is a freakish amount of information to be learned for this class.
He is VERY funny!!! Very easy grader. Take notes when he is talking about terms, they will be on the quiz and midterm and final. Don't use the books in class but you need them for the tests and quizzes. TAKE HIM
All I can say is if you can type faster than you can write, I advice you to bring your laptop to class!
Take notes, quizzes and tests are not based off of the book alone. The book is not used during class but you are expected to read and understand the material. He talks kind of fast, so it may be helpful to bring a laptop if you are not a fast writer. Some quizzes were multiple choice. Take home quizzes/tests were not an option in SP 09.
He is a very cool and laid back person, but his quizzes are EXTREMELY HARD! He covers so much info and it's like a guessing game when it comes to the quizzes, you never know what he's going to put on it. He expects you to know the dates, theories, ect. in and out. He admitted class has high drop rate and hardly ever has an SI becus A's are scarce.
class is mandatory if you want to pass. i really didn't think the information that we were learning was that important to my college career for example movie titles from the 50's, muppet baby characters, and top magazines.? Quizes were too hard and broad for the material he tried to teach us. Class was not "fun". 4Q/2T Atten Mandatory
This professor is bitter about the 21st century and he's teaching a mass comm class. He would frequently make bad comments about today's technology and was very discouraging when he taught the chapter about Public Relations, claiming that it was a bad career path. His quizzes were not very hard but he was a smart ass in the way he wrote them.
Comes off as cool and laid back, but is really bitter and cynical. Lectures are boring, quizzes are unnecessarily detailed and can kill your grade even if you do really well on the presentations. Final is absolutely ridiculous and nit picky. I would not recommend this course even for COM majors.
He is a cool guy. Pretty funny and laid back. The material was semi-interesting. 4 quizzes over from the book. Some were true/false and the others were multiple choice. Do the quizzes and speech and you will do fine. He's a fairly easy grader too
Awesome prof. with great lectures and hilarious digressions about traffic, other classes, his college days, etc. Go to every class, work hard on the few quizzes he gives, and prepare for the speeches = A. His personality definitely keeps you awake and laughing.
All he does is read from his lecture notes. Attendance is mandatory. Bring a laptop to take notes, b/c he talks fast. He'll tell you when to expect a quiz. The midterm and final study guides are what is on the test, so study them thoroughly and you'll ace the test. Sarcastic as all heck, so don't take anything he says personally.
I hope to never take a class with this clown again. He looks at the ground the entire lecture and makes completely inappropriate comments during his inane lectures. UTSA needs better standards. Learned nothing from him.
BEST teacher I have ever had!!..seriously! I have never had a professor who was so helpful, reliable and easy going. He is willing to help you with anything, even other classes...and is really interested in making sure that you learn. WELOVEHIM!!
LOVE HIM! I have taken 2 courses with him so far, his quizzes are hard but his tests are easy! He knows his material and is very funny and a fun class to go to, makes the attendance rule seem like not a big deal especially when you are learning from someone so fun and knowledgable! I am taking him again for other classes in summer and fall 2012!
He is a very good professor who teaches you all about the history of the mass media. While it may sound somewhat boring, it really isn't. There are a lot of notes but it's worth it to take them. Be sure to study for the quizzes but if you took good notes, it should be no problem. The best part is that you learn so much info about the mass media, it's very interesting. He also gives you a study guide for the midterm and final exam which is VERY helpful. I highly recommend him.
What a funny Professor and he only got more crazier as the semester went on. In 2343 he takes attendance for 20% of your grade. An essay for 20%. 4 Quizzes at 20%. And a Mid-Term/ Final for 40% that he gives you a study guide that you need to memorize front and back. I enjoyed his class, you write a lot but overall a good class.
4 quizes + 2 tests + 1 paper+ attendance (20% ). quizzes are hard filled with trivia. tests have a review before. no homework. nice guy, very laid back.
attendance 20% + quizes + tests + paper. quizzes were not painless, but he gives a great review for the tests. paper is about the news media (opinionated). he is quirky and laid back. take him!
Very funny guy. Recommend you go to class and attend SI sessions. Take good notes and you should do fine.
Easily the worst class I have taken at UTSA. The professor just rambles and tries to make jokes. It's an awful class. I hated every mandatory minute. Run from this class and this carny teacher.
So easy. Do not need the book. Attendance required. REALLY nice guy. goes off on tangents. mid term, final, attendance, and speech = your grade. Put in minimal effort and got an A. TAKE HIM FOR THIS CLASS
EASY EASY CLASS. Mid term, final, briefs, and attendance = grade. Briefs are very very easy. if you have to take a senior level comm class, take this one! minimal effort and got an A. funny professor.
THIS IS A NO JOKE INTRO CLASS. NOT A BLOW OFF. NOT EASY. if you do not take notes every single class quizzes will kill you. paper is extremely easy. attendance required. mid term and final come straight from notes, fill in the blank and essay. good teacher hard class.
This professor is horrible. He is off topic almost the entire class period. Extremely boring. I dreaded going to class and hated being in class. No textbook required.
Easy course if you come to class and take notes. DO NOT miss more than 3 classes. Make a study group for midterm and final w/ppl who do not social loaf. Speech is easy, but make sure your outlines are good. I would take him again! Also offered extra credit which I took advantage of.
If you go to class and take notes, its really not a challenging class. He keeps his lectures entertaining and makes his tests easy. GO TO CLASS, your attendance grade is an easy 100. You do have to give a short speech at the end of the semester, but its not bad at all. I would suggest taking him.
He is one of the worst professors i have ever come across. This man has negative energy towards everything. It does not matter if you mastered the subject, if you did not attend class you will fail magically. no matter what your other grades were. He tells you to get the book, never once touched it. He made everything boring.
Go to class, and copy down literally every word that he says. He doesn't have ppt slides to go off of or any sort of way to study unless you take really good notes. You don't need the book, as long as you pay pretty good attention, you're golden. Pretty easy A, he is funny and keeps you awake. 4 grades midterm, final, speech, and attendance.
Literally all you have to do is go to class, take good notes and you'll pass. He grades on attendance (which is an easy grade), a speech that you do at the end of the semester (which he grades easily on) and a mid term (gives a good review that ensures an A) The class voted on not taking a final. If you don't show up for class, you'll fail. Easy A
One mid term. We voted not to have a final. Attendance was 100 points, mid term was 100, and the one and only speech was 200 points. It's pretty impossible to get lower than a B in this class. i failed the test and did the extra and still passed with an A. Speech is super easy (4-6 mins), test is easy (he has a review). Hardest part: GO TO CLASS
This class was easy if you went. Take notes, quizzes aren't blow off. But they are simple if you take notes. Attendance is important, if you go every day that's 100 free points. Didn't use the book at all. The paper was easy and we voted for no final. Got an A. main point GO TO CLASS (and don't leave early)
Professor West lectures seem long. He goes off on rants about his good ol days, but who doesn't? His quizzes and tests are very straight forward. Super easy too, if you go to class and take notes. He sometimes post his lectures online. 1 essay, 3 tests, and 5 quizzes. I would take again. He is very easy.
Takes attendance so going to class is mandatory. Lectures are very boring but you have to take notes to know whats going on. Tests and quizzes are simple if you take notes
He is a great professor, just goes off on rants about his past. Very easy professor besides that. Gave out 2 tests, 4 quizzes, and one paper. Everything is straight forward and his tests are exactly like the study guide. attendance is mandatory. Would take again!!
He lectures the entire class. Some of the jokes he tries to make may seem offensive but he's a pretty chill professor. No need for a book. Write down everything he says and study. Very helpful. Easy final. You present a topic of your choice. The tests were a bit challenging to me but I was missing notes so GO TO CLASS! Attendance is 100 points.
He doesnt use PowerPoint, only writes a word on a piece of paper and then talks about it. Very monotone and dry. Otherwise, gives out reviews before each test which make them super easy to pass if you showed up to class and took exceptional notes. 3 tests and 1 short paper.
this guy is soooooo chill and played back, just show up to class thats all you have to do, it would be smart to pair up with a couple of people for the review for each test overall easy class
He was my favorite professor this semester. His lectures are funny (in my opinion, although slightly offensive sometimes) and his exams are easy in my opinion if you go to class. 3 exams and a speech, which you can choose whatever topic you want. Take him if you can.
He is a little negative and critical, and his humor gets a little old. However, an easy prof is you're looking for an easy class. Simple tests, just need to go to class for the notes.
West is pretty cool, just lectures each class period. He gives study guides so his tests are really easy. Attendance is crucial, the total grade for the class comes from 3 tests and attendance, each 100 points. Overall, easy A, if you can come to each class. He's very opinionated and doesn't mind speaking about his opinions in his lecture.
Mr. West is great! The reviews are basically the same as the test just worded a little differently. The class is an easy A and he is the kind man who tries to make it as interesting as possible with stories and jokes. Great professor, highly recommend
If possible, please steer clear of any course taught by Professor West. His inability to structure content and engage with students makes his courses a complete waste of time. Any other professor in the Communications department would be a better option. Again, please don't make the same mistake as me and enroll in his courses. Save your time and $
100 Question exams and a presentation at the end of the semester. He lectures every class for the entire time that drags on. His study guides are vague and have a lot of grammar issues. He doesn't care about the students. If you do terrible, he doesn't let you debate the grade or questions on the exam that were too vague to lookup on the studyguide
Professor West is funny but can get a little weird. You have to talk so class doesn't feel so long. He loves talking about his past so just ask question about that. He is an old lonely man so he has the needs to talk to others. I had a great time in his class but the key is to go in there with a good positive attitude. And don't get offended.
Very chill class not graded on many things, presentation at the end of the year.
He's very funny, but can be offensive if you are sensitive. 2 tests worth 40% an outline worth 20% and a speech worth 40% of Gpa. The tests are 100 questions that are pretty easy and all based on the lectures (many questions based on words he says, not necessarily what you find in textbook: attendance is key). Sometimes gives multiple test attempts
This is a fairly easy class, with very few assignments that hold a heavyweight in your final grade. His comments are injected into the long typed-out lectures. Attendance was through a weekly discussion check-in, Just an" I read it". If you don't open the PDF the week off, it gets taken off, and strict deadlines for quizzes.
Professor West is passionate about his topics. I took Mass Media&Law and he could relate every topic to something from his experience or ours. Only 2 tests, (3 in syllabus but entire class chose a 5th essay) and 4-5 essay assignments (easy). Gives extra credit for showing up to every class. Would recommend to com majors looking for electives.
I absolutly loved this professor. 10/10 my favorite teacher by far. He made this class enjoyable even though it was a morning class. There is one major thing and it's the presentation. He clearly explains everything required for it. I recommend this class and this professor to anyone that needs this class
He is a super cool guy
Professor West is hilarious, making me excited to go to a class I originally didn't want to go to. There is one major project, but he is lenient since it is a freshman class. He does mention things in class that are on the midterms that aren't in the textbook, though.
Class is straight-forward. Textbook is necessary. 9 quizzes, 2 mid-terms, and a final. Quizzes open on Friday and are due by Sunday. I would recommend the professor!
