I took Richard's class during the summer and he made waking up for a 9am totally worth it. I hated 293 but genuinely liked 294. He had gifs and memes in his slides and would play music to wake us up before class. And he genuinely cared about everyone's success in his course!! Go to lectures, do all the practices and you will get an A!!
Take Richard for Tax you won't regret it. He's super enthusiastic and you can tell he genuinely cares about the students and our learning. Lectures were great and his iclickers were really good practice and he doesn't count them for marks. Exams were fair and straightforward and open book so prepare good notes. Great prof!
I don't usually leave reviews for profs, but this man is an absolute gem. If you review the lectures consistently and go to his office hours if you need help, you are almost guaranteed an A. This man responds to my emails within half an hour, despite shooting him emails at 1am. His exams are VERY fair, and class avg was 80.
I don't know why this guy has a good rating. Super unorganized and doesn't use original material. He never responds to my simple emails. Worst instructor ever. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS.
Taxation, in itself, is boring to learn but the guy does his best to make it entertaining. His bad (and dad) jokes are just so cheesy you can't help but grin a little. I also like how accessible he and his TAs are outside of class.
Richard is awesome and definitely deserves more credit than he gets. He is amazing at teaching and he actually makes accounting lectures entertaining somehow! Great prof and would definitely take more classes with him if I could.
Had Richard for tax online. He was great! Tax is a truly painful subject to study, but Richard did his best to make it engaging/entertaining. Tests/quizzes were hard, but he scaled the midterm and final by quite a bit so it felt very fair. Definitely recommend Richard for 355
Richard is truly a gem. You can tell he really puts a lot of thought and time into his lectures. 450 isn't the easiest subject, but if you go to his lectures (or watch his videos) and do practice problems like he suggested, you are gonna do fine in his class.
Second time taking the course (withdrew halfway previous semester due to personal matters) would take it again a third time if I could. Richard truly goes above and beyond for his students and makes tax fun, not that tax already isn't! Well organized, amazing lectures both in online/offline class settings. Best Prof I've had at Sauder.
Richard is such a great Prof! Had the pleasure of taking 355 with R at the same time. Extremely hard working for his students, clear, well composed lectures (the guy knows accounting, especially tax). Personally loathed online classes last year but Richard's recorded lectures were very clear/concise/engaging/inspirational. 10/10, 100% Recommend.
Please don't take his class if you care about your education at all. He doesn't prepare for lectures making them scattered and all over the place. Hard to follow. Unorganized and not clear on what is required ever. Pretends to be nice and fun but seems to be busy with other work all the time. There are better professors out there.
Terrible. Don't do it man. Find another prof at all costs.
Tax is a tough class, but Richard somehow got me interested and excited about it. He responds to emails very quickly and is more than willing to talk about your life outside of Sauder. A real gem of a human being that cares about students, without a doubt. Practice, pay attention during class, and you'll do fine.
I was one of the students that Richard convinced to take tax planning at 8:30 am in the morning. I am not a morning person and I have never signed up for any 8:30 am classes before, but Richard made it worth it. Even on a Monday morning, he is energetic and funny. The clickers are useful. Be prepared for awful dad jokes...
After COMM 293, I was NOT looking forward to COMM 294. Richard changed the way I looked at accounting. He explained concepts simply, tried to turn various concepts into games, and gave helpful life advice. Take 294 with him - you won't regret it.
I was feeling really anxious about taking tax this last semester. However, despite it being on a Wednesday evening and online, Richard did a great job of keeping my interest and attention throughout the term. Make sure you practice! Questions can be tricky. Give it a shot - Richard is great.
I had him for 450 and 452. He is a tax accountant so tax is his passion. I hated tax becuz of terrible prof in 355. Loved it because of him. Great slides, great examples, CRA should pay him for teaching. 450 was a disaster for me. Material is hard, his method of teaching is less developed. Still a great prof.
Great instructor dealt with the poorest hand of content. Tax is an extremely frustrating, hard to understand topic but Richard made me want to learn it. You can tell he really cares about students. I will not be going into tax ANYTIME soon but when I talk to my friends who have had other instructors, I appreciate Richard time and time again.
Silly … but in a good way. Get ready for dad jokes and games that try to make accounting fun. I don’t think I’ve seen an instructor try so hard to get people excited about accounting. A real gem.
Great tax prof! One of the toughest courses i've taken in the DAP program but I can imagine how much worse it would be if I took tax with someone else.
Really made the time for me as I was going through CPA recruit. I don't think I would've gotten a big 4 job had I not gotten to know him better. He really cares. In terms of his class, tax is definitely not my cup of tea. The rules are detailed and hard to remember. That being said, I still found it interesting. Richard is to blame. He is engaging
If you're looking for an easy course, this is not it. Lots of tricky questions on exams so additional study time is required. Likes to tell jokes during lectures, but rather have time spent going over course materials that are for MARKS!
Tax is not an easy pass - but this class would've been so much worse if I didn't have Richard. The bad reviews are probably people who didn't bother showing up to class or doing the practice questions. As long as you practice and put in the work, you'll come out on top. Fall behind and you'll REALLY fall behind.
Great instructor! COMM 452 was one of the best courses I took in my accounting undergrad. I've never taken an 8:30 am class and was convinced by Richard's shameless plugs. Well worth it!
I've read it elsewhere, and I think it is worth repeating, this course is hard and might have been much harder if it wasn't for Richard. Tax is complex and nebulous but Richard brought it down to a level that made it challenging yet understandable. Course might not be easiest, but if you have to take, there is no one better!
Great dad jokes. Lectures are concise, canvas is extremely well organized. Do the homework and it's not hard at all to get a good grade.
Richard is hand down one of the best profs I have had at Sauder. He is caring and does his best to make the lectures engaging whiles clear and informative. His midterm was very straightforward with the final being a bit harder. He is very accessible outside of class and is always willing to help. Overall one of the best profs for accounting courses
Great guy but not a good professor. He wasn't organized and the class felt like chaos all the time. The examples were unclear and had typos all the time. He ignored two of my emails, just literally never responded. I got a good grade but don't feel like I learned anything. I would avoid if you can.
One word: LEGENDARY. I was not excited for accounting but Richard made it exciting. Richard makes you work hard but if you put in the time and effort, you will do well. I don't think I want to specialize in accounting but if you have to take an accounting course, Richard's your guy. The negative reviews are probably people who failed tbh.
I would've gotten a higher grade in his class if his face wasn't so punchable
Most legit prof if you want to learn to do things the right way. Bad reviews are probably from lazy people who don't show up to class or can't follow instructions (there honestly was quite a few of these). I emailed him and got responses back even at 1 am. Lectures are very organized, structured, and detailed. Best prof i've had in DAP so far.
Despite my better judgment, Richard convinced me to take an 8:30 am tax class with him this semester. I think he's the only prof I would wake up this early for. It's pretty clear from this class and the 450 class after that Richard has a loyal following of supporters. Very engaging, pushes you to put in the work, and absolutely hilarious.
Tax sucks but Richard is great.
What a legend. Give this man a raise. Was invaluable to me when I was trying to decide what to do post-graduation. Genuine, honest, entertaining, and straightforward. Can't say enough good things about him.
Richard was an amazing prof, cared about his students and max taxes interesting!
Such a caring instructor and very organized. If you put in the work you will have no problem excelling. His lectures are thorough and clear plus the dad jokes are on point!
If every professor were like him, every class would be enjoyable. Amazingly engaging and clear lectures! Breaks stuff down so its easy to understand. Also gives lots of practice! Super encouraging as well and is willing to help students. 5/5 RECOMMEND
Great guy - super underrated. Tax is a very interesting subject when Richard teaches it and you can't help but be fascinated by it. Strongly recommend.
Very rarely will you find an accounting professor/lecturer in this school that has challenging material yet extremely fair exams. What you expect to see, you will get tested on. This is if you keep up with the content as its very fast paced, and ask for help when needed. Tax is confusing. Richard makes it more than doable!
Who ever thought that tax could be interesting? I feel bad that no one laughs at the dad jokes but he is by far one of the best instructors i've ever had. Very engaging. After I bombed a quiz, he reached out to me to make sure everything was okay - I've never had an instructor do this. Sauder needs to give him a pay raise or an award or something
One of the most rewarding courses ever. Everyone says it, tax is NOT easy. Somehow, Richard made it extremely enjoyable and digestible. He's accessible outside class, always willing to help, and offers an immense amt of resources that are representative of his exams. Attend class & put in effort, you WILL be rewarded. Amazing across the board!
I can't believe i'm saying this but this guy makes tax exciting. Tax would've and could've been 40000 x more boring without him. Don't get me wrong - this was not an easy class but i'm glad I had a chance to take a class with Richard. He definitely lived up to the hype.
Love this guy. Tax would be so extremely boring if it wasn't for him. I have friends at other institutions tell me how boring and uninteresting tax is and it makes me appreciate Richard that much more. The class is not easy but I learned a lot and enjoyed the experience. Best class I've had at Sauder so far.
Richard is one of the most hilarious and effortless professors I've come across so far! He'll make you look forward to the classes and work for it. Brownie point-Meme guy, super funny!
Great guy - class is hard in itself but as I am taking this course a second time, I can tell you with full confidence that Richard is as good as it gets. Do the practice questions and you will be fine.
This is the first time I am enjoying accounting. I was really dreading taking this class and now I wish I could take it with him for longer. Cares about student learning and comes up with terrible jokes, life advice, and even accounting games to help us learn. I'm so glad I took it with him.
Took this class with Richard on the recommendation of friends who had him before. Did not regret it. Engaging lectures, good humour, great class environment. If you have a chance to take a class with Richard, do it.
Good prof that explains concepts well, but get ready for his huge ego and daily bragging about his achievements in university from a decade ago
Hated 293 and was dreading even the thought of taking this course. I really enjoyed taking 294 with Richard. He explains things clearly and made the class a lot of fun. I disagree with the person below - I don't think he's necessarily trying to brag about his achievements but trying to inspire us for 3rd/4th yr based on his time at Sauder.
Honestly, what impressed me the most was that he reached out after exams and quizzes to congratulate me on a job well done. I've never had a prof do that before. Kept me motivated to do better and made me want to learn tax. Great prof!
Great prof, hated COMM293 but he made COMM294 very tolerable. Slides are thorough so great for review but clickers were 5% so go to class! Life lessons half way through class are actually useful and not near as corny as the ones in COMM293. Take the class with Richard!
I honestly believe that tax would've sucked without Richard. Not an easy class but ended up being one of my absolute favourite classes. Richard is top notch.
The best SFU accounting professor for financial accounting I at the moment, bar none! UBC students, please feel free to choose! Amazing!
I probably won't be specializing in accounting anytime soon but Richard made managerial accounting bearable. 6 weeks with him flew by. Definitely take 294 with him in the summer and he will make you consider accounting as an option.
Questions and knowledge checks can be tricky but prepared me well for the midterm and final. This is NOT an easy class but I found it very interesting. Richard is a great teacher.
I was worried about how hard tax would be. It is hard but Richard makes it extremely interesting. He is funny, engaging, and has made me consider a career in tax.
Big fan of this guy! Great instructor and even greater human being! Would definitely recommend trying to take a class with him before you graduate!
Amazing teacher, easy going and hilarious
Best prof I've had during my undergrad! Makes coming to the 8am classes worth it and keeps us well engaged. Exams are very fair and reflective of what was taught in class. Also reaches out about your grades if you've done well and that has been a first for me but thought it was nice and gave me motivation to push through the semester.
Richard honestly tries so hard to make tax interesting. I was surprised by how much I enjoyed his course by the end of the term. Never had a prof reach out to congratulate me for doing well on a midterm before Richard.
He made TAX exciting. You did not read that wrong. Great instructor.
Great instructor for 294. Tries really hard to keep us engaged with bad jokes and games. Made me unhate accounting.
Genuinely my favourite professor in UBC so far. I hate accounting with my whole entire heart but Richard makes 9 am lectures worth going (I sleep at 5am for reference). He provides lots of examples and is very passionate to help students in understanding the materials. Love his dad jokes too! 10/10 prof will retake
Great prof! Was scared to take accounting and took it over the summer to get it over with. Accounting is not for me but Richard is probably the closest anyone will ever get trying to convince me to choose accounting. Funny, clear explanations, lots of practice questions. Highly recommend.
Classes are pretty bad, very overrated professor, highly recommend avoiding him at all costs. His jokes are old and not funny.
Pretty straightforward class. Good guy and hard to fail as long as you practice (he mentions this A LOT). Richard is great. Would not hesitate to recommend him as a professor.
Got an A- (MMDD) but this guy was an absolute nightmare, do not take him because he does exams only on lockdown browser (canvas) and most are multiple choice and fill in the blanks, does not give credit for partial work. Worst course and professor at Sauder. Financial accounting is far better - Scott Sinclair is really good prof!
Lol looks like someone failed his class recently... Richard is great. Tax is not the most exciting course but he does a good job of trying to make it exciting. Took time outside of class to help me figure out what to do after graduation.
Richard seems like a guy who tries hard, but sometimes his exams can be rough and does not offer partial marks at all. Accounting is all going towards AI anyways so I don't see why the class is exam heavy. The way he teaches the course is interesting to say the least. Anyways, I'd recommend another prof instead!
Last several reviews clearly by the same person who likely failed his class. His classes are tough but exams are exactly like questions in class, homework assignments, and the knowledge checks. slides have everything you need and he's very responsive to emails
Richard wong is an interesting prof, he does not know how to teach and overcooks it. Please avoid him
Richard is test-heavy. If you love exams, take his class. If you don't then he does not accommodate different teaching styles. He even said this stuff should be basic knowledge in office hours when students wanted to learn from him... he skips over student questions in class just to get to his goal which is finishing his lecture slides on time.
Not sure what all the negative reviews are talking about… He's a really engaging professor who explains concepts very well. 3 hour lectures were only survivable because of him. He's accessible outside the classroom and even the course. He's always willing to share his knowledge and is pretty clear about his expectations. Would definitely recommend!
Pretty crazy someone's been keeping this up for a month ... Says a lot about the person. Who has this much time on their hands?! I enjoyed Richard for 452. It was good prep for CPA. Definitely recommend if you liked his style for 355 and want more.
As the tag says, he grades heavily on tests and thinks people will easily grasp the concepts because the material is straightforward. He is a terrible teacher and needs to improve the way he teaches concepts, he rushes through class and literally tells his students "guys we do not have enough time to get through so please don't ask questions."WHAT?
Whatever you do avoid this "person" at all costs, he is condescending, rude, treats students like they are in middle school. I really hope the business school fires him, already sent email to Dean Darren.
Tough class, much tougher than COMM 355, but Richard's exams are very similar to the knowledge checks and homework assignments. Some may complain that his classes are exam heavy but he is a CPA and it's prep for the CPA which is exam-heavy (whether modules or CFE). Super helpful prof. Explains all positive reviews from now to a few years ago!
tax super hard but richard was a great instructor! i didn't think tax was going to be interesting but i learned a lot in his class. the homeworks and quizzes are definitely harder than the questions in class but they also prepare you well for exams. exams are fair with a few trick questions. good choice of professor if you want to get a cpa
everyone knows 355 is for the CPA so its great he is good for people wanting to do it, but I took 355 as a comm elective without wanting to go into the CPA and this guy was very organized and exams were exactly like the knowledge check assignments and homework! much easier and more helpful than a lot of other professors
Rosa says your cool :)
Ari agrees with Rosa
Took his BUSI 354 - Cost Accounting this summer. Richard & his TA, Edward were awesome, very responsive and clear in their communication & explanations. He gives credit to those who actively participate in class. Overall, a funny guy and worth taking.
All I did to prep for the final was grind the practice questions he posted on canvas. Made managerial accounting interesting (Somehow) with sometimes corny but still endearing jokes. My fav teacher out of my 4 summer courses. I would take classes with him again!
Broke topics down! Made it easy to understand
the best teacher I've met in DAP in UBC, not only dedicated and responsible, but also humorous and engaging. well-structured content makes learn every effectively.
I took him after reading rating , but I don't know his grading was awful, a lot of work and rough grader.don'tgo with him .
Terrible decision to go with this prof, he doesn't deserve to be at ubc. Very disappointing and test heavy. Please respect yourself and not take his class.
Richard has ruined my life by being extremely disrespectful to my boyfriend and I. Just know Richard that we are taking future accounting courses with other professors. You have ruined my dreams of earning my CPA designation. - S.M and N.P
Richard is very caring and passionate about tax. He makes learning about taxes fun. He's very clear and knowledgeable. One of the best.
Impossible exams.
Richard is an amazing prof. He is passionate about tax, and it shows when he teaches. Everyone commenting bad things clearly does not know how to prepare for this type of course. As long as you thoroughly read the slides and practice, you will definitely do well. Richard is also very responsive. He also provides a lot of time during exams!
