organized lectures, easy to follow and take notes
excellent: best teaher i ever had

Very funny, interesting classes! Great guy! lots of multiple choice though! eek!
Best prof in psyc department. Excellent lectures.
Funny, speaks clear, no notes though. But NO ASSIGNMENTS!!!!!!
UNBELIEVABLY HILARIOUS! M/C exams are alittle hard...
goes off on funny tangents, made 9:30 class on Friday worth going to
Lectures are entertaining, the text is fine, but his exams are a bit tricky.
teaches course on att'n, not sure he has a lot sometimes, but he's not bad.
exams are multiple choice and not too bad, his lectures seen disorganized and he seems like he doesnt really know what he is talking about.
SUPER FUNNY!!! One of the best professors I've had so far. Even though he sometimes goes on a tangent during lectures, but it's just what makes the class that much more enojoyable and relaxed. MCs are not that hard at all~
Such a funny guy. Took 2 courses with him because classes were so enjoyable. MCs are very straightforward, and not tricky at all...so if you study and know your stuff, you should get a great mark.
so funny!
good prof, funny, exams are multiple choice, just memorize the textbook. Depends on how good your TA is too.
not a bad lecturer but his exams are a bit tricky, asks about stuff that he didn't talk about in lecture and told us not to read in the textbook. Expects you to know the little details
all m/c exams. but questions can be very tough. true/false questions can be tricky. most tricky ones are those asking who did what and neurocognition questions asking biological stuff...
No depth, never knows what he's talking about, never able to answer questions, looks and sounds goofy. If you want to laugh, then take his course, but otherwise don't waste your time. Something strange about the sweatshirts he wears...stuck in the 80s.
Great prof, very funny, no trouble staying awake in this class. Material not that interesting but the lecturing style makes it worth taking.
Enjoyed all his classes.
material is boring. prof is kind of goofy & he sometimes wears the same shirt every week. m/c exams are a little tricky. ta's go more in-depth with the material, which is very helpful.
Very funny guy. Teaching materials are not heavy.
If you want to be entertained, sure... if you actually intend to learn anything, don't waste your time. Disorganized and bumbling. Announced midway through the exam we were to ignore certain questions, as he'd just remembered "I forgot to teach that stuff".
Very friendly, entertianing to listen to. however, lectures are completely useless, just read the books. he goes off on unrelated tangents and gives 500 examples for every point. however he will include some of his strange examples on the exam, so listen to lectures online.
his lectures are so boring and not educational. examples are just weird - which helps you to remember them but they are pretty useless otherwise (some of them are on the exams though) I ended up listening to his lectures online - he can't answer most questions anyways. disappointed
Interesting Lecture, quizes help boost your mark. Exams are detail oriented, so pay attn. to his lectures and his readings.
If you want to do well on this course, study the TA's notes day and night. Lecture and the "textbook" won't help you...they will just confuse you. He doesn't explain things well in his lecture or in his textbook.

I totally enjoyed his class. I found it easy, he rarely lectured beyond the text. I went to 3 classes and still got an A-, just listen to the lectures and read the text.
Wright was pretty funny, I thought his class was boring but I kind of liked him. Tests and Quizzes are straight from his text, if you understand it ONLY study the text and you will do well. If you can't, go to lecture and read the TAs notes for clarification but there's nothing new in either of them. I only studied the book and did really well.
Good lectures, very interested in the topic. Textbook was good. Prof was very open to suggestions and comments. Responded well to the class, and made an effort to make each lecture interesting.
Good Class~ Fair Grading~
it's important to get a good ta for this class coz 30% is based on the quiz that was given in tutorials. i had a bad ta and ended up getting a C+. The class material is not that hard u just need to attend class and understand the notes. Another good thing about this class is that you don't have to buy a text.
Goofy prof (not a good thing), always chewing gum (annoying!), no lecture notes and bad overheads
Mostly tested on stuff from the textbook. I found the lectures interesting though many people thought they were boring. Exams are fair with a couple of trick questions.
this class seems very easy at the beg. but the midterm and final is really hard and detailed. Verrrrry detailed. The TAz weren't good.
OK Class.
I really liked this prof. I'm not a fan of cognitive psyc and wasn't really looking forward to this class but the prof was funny, intersting and slightly comical. Had great powerpoint presentation and the best part... NO TEXTBOOK TO BUY. He's writing his own so he hands out photocopies in class. Would definatly take a class with him again.
Really good prof, however MC tests are really hard, can't seem to grasp them. Just studying his notes and memorizing the readings will not do.
This guy is awesome! He is super nice, funny, clear and organized. Tests are all MC, and very fair. Lectures are only 2 hours, so you get out early. Text is super easy, handed out in class (free!), and very clear. Curriculum is a bit dry, but very straightforward. This prof is awesome!!
Prof is really into the topic. Is very approachable. Explains material fairly well; helps you understand the readings. Exams are a little tricky, but that could just be due to my lack of studying.
1 multiple choice midterm, 1 final, 3 thought question papers (about 1 pg each). Prof is very nice, knowledgeable, and fair. Lectures r all recorded but I'd recommend 2 not miss class. Highly recommended!
Fun Class, pretty funny prof but somewhat difficult exams. You definitely have to think on your feet as his MC exams are not babied per se. I'd suggest going to class as his powerpoint is not posted and some of the slides are not in the weekly handout. Make sure you understand variations of questions and concepts and you'll be fine. Good prof.
I LOVE THIS CLASS YESS I LOVE THE MULTIPLE CHOICE!!! Yes, his class is that great. To get a good grade though there is no question about the fact that you still have to do the work. Id take a class with him again
Terrible teaching! The percentage range is so bad it's not even funny. I passed everything and i still got a D! 50 - 59% = D. Also very unlikable and unfriendly TA's Karen and George.especially Karen. Just remember, if these are the people you encounter. Passing will not even get you a C-. "Not fair markers". Be warned
An absolute delight of a prof! Dr. Wright is friendly, funny,&approachable, though sometimes a little shy one-on-one.He explains material in a very coherent and engaging way(One class had over a half dozen film clips to illuminate points)He seems to really enjoy teaching & making his lectures funny/interesting,which is good b/c cog psych can be dry!
His class is really easy if you read the textbook and start studying early. ignore the person under me, they are just very mad about their mark and not thinking straight. george and karen were very easy/fair markers. did my paper last min and got an A on all them. Richard also very friendly, understanding, and extremely fair for his MC exams.
Richard is very friendly, helpful -gives u advice for grad school, and extremely fair in his all MC exams. Ignore the person 2 posts under me, they r just mad at the ta's which shouldnt accumulate onto richard's grading. also as a side note: kiran and george were friendly and fair in their marking. i did my papers last min and got an A.
This is a great Prof who seems passionate about teaching! Breaks down the material so it seems easy, then you take the M/C exam, not so easy. Includes much visual material to cement concepts - very helpful if you're a visual learner. Highly recommend Dr Wright!
Great class! Midterm and final are all multiple choice and mostly non-cumulative. The material on the exams came equally from the text and lecture. Pay attention to his examples, there are some questions about them on the exams. Also, class is on a curve I got between 80-90% on my exams, ended up with an A+.
Loved this prof! The lectures were really interesting. Exams and assignments were fair.
One of the best Profs I've ever had at SFU. Very passionate, helpful, and nice. Make sure you take good notes. Exams are all MCs but do require some effort. Wish could take more courses with him.
I have a very low interest in cog psyc but he made it very interesting&fun.m/c exams r a little tricky but still very fair.Don't study at the last min or u'll be confused (espec for 2nd exam). If cog psyc is not ur thing u'll need 2 read readings a few times or more 2 grasp tricky concepts. U get excellent illustrations of concepts in lecture.
Awesome prof! He's really nice and wants you to do well. The textbook is key. Read it before going to lecture. You have to take good notes cuz its not on the slides. The exams are fair. Study the book and review notes a week in advance and youre pretty much guaranteed an A. No last minute studying!
AMAZING prof!! Very passionate and knowledgeable about cognitive psych, talks to students instead of lecturing them/reading off of slides...makes 3 hour lectures fly by. Gives tons of examples and midterms/final were all multiple choice. Fav prof at SFU so far!
I HATED this class. The complete lack of guidance in terms of notes makes the 3 hour lecture impossible to follow. I cannot STAND listening to someone drone on for hours without giving me something to write down. Goes off on irrelevant tangents. Tests definitely based more on lecture. Will avoid in the future FOR SURE
this comment is directed to the review who posted below me saying they hated the class and its leture based ITS NOT totally textbook dont even need to go to lecture so dont believe him or her wright is a great prof so take him if your schedule permits hehe
I was dreading this class bec. cognitive psyc is harder for me since it's so abstract. However, Dr. Wright's class is fun and not boring. It's also recorded. You don't need textbooks bec. he provides you with a chapter handout every class. Exams are easy all MC just read the readings! Easy class and pretty fun!
very dull, completely useless to e-mail as the response will be extremely brief, the three hours seemed a lot longer.
Despite it being a 3hr class we never went for the full time, as 3hrs can be a long lecture!! Kept it interesting and easy to do well on midterm and final exam if you either go to lectures or listen to the recordings. Should also at least read through text material once. Thought questions a little harder... TAs were very vague on what they wanted.
Best prof at SFU! He is funny without meaning to be. I usually hate paying attention in lecture, but he made lectures fun and very interesting. Textbook chapters were short and easy to understand. He tests mostly on what he says during lecture. Thought papers were easy, but put some thought into them! I would highly recommend Dr. Wright!
This class was extremely hard for me. You need to go to every lecture & take notes because he doesn't have a real pwr pt or even FITB notes, and the textbook is hard to study. Be warned that the exams and assignments are hard!
This course had no textbook, which made it extremely difficult. He is a good professor and really loves what he is teaching however I feel that his lectures are quite scattered, and I am unsure of what we do and do not need to know. It is more about the poor structure of the course than him as a professor.
no need to buy a textbook - he provides photocopied chapters each class. recorded lecture. 3 thought papers which are not too difficult but no guidelines given on how to write it at all. The exams were M/C but extremely hard.. the average was low for both. Need to understand everything beyond his teachings. not a GPA booster
He keeps the lectures fun with up to date references and lots of video samples. His lectures are recorded like others mentioned, but can't rely on the quality and his lecture slides are not posted online. so you should attend class as exams cover them all. Overall I enjoyed it so much with his honest perceptions about textbook studies.
He is really boring and the exams are so hard and the thought papers are impossible :/ The information is really cool, but i'm just not satisfied with the class itself.
Richard is an awesome prof! He explains things really well and his classes are always interesting! His thought questions and exams are very fair - you HAVE to study for this class if you want a good mark. His corny jokes are silly but they work. I really enjoyed having him as a prof.
This class is just a mess. I like the professor, don't get me wrong, hes super nice and helpful and he breaks down material pretty easily, HOWEVER, the structure of his class completely threw me off. His class was unorganized, no lecture slides, no proper textbook and the lectures were scattered. The assignments have no guidelines whatsoever either
Dr. Wright is a really funny guy, kind-hearted and very friendly. He keeps lectures engaging which is awesome. Problem: doesn't post lecture slides, have to read the textbook to do well on the exams (even though he doesn't talk about text in lecture) and it is unclear as to what to study. Exams are all MC which is nice though! Must attend lecture
He is a really nice professor and is helpful and approachable. The exams are all MC and require you to know the text in detail. He was a bit disorganized though, especially when it came to exams!
Richard is an awesome prof. This course is extremely easy to pass! Just read the textbook and take good notes in lecture. Thought questions are also really easy to ace - just think outside the box and use previous notes from past psychology courses. Memorization is key. Lectures are mostly for fun, but you DO need to attend!
Received an A+ with an 88%, even though he doesn't curve or scale (which I don't believe). Didn't go to lectures after the midterm. Listen to his lectures since they contain the bulk of the exam material. Handouts are from his own textbook for free, but are poorly written and contain little detail that's useful. Easy GPA booster. Little content.
Assignment are not hard but exams weight a lot. Have to pay attention to class and take notes.
The most boring class ever! He does not use power point and there is really no textbook for the class. I was quite lost on what to study.Take REALLY clear notes. Also I find my self wondering: what's the point in cognitive psychology at all! why would anyone waste their time studying something so horribly boring. like paint drying. ugh.
Tests are quite difficult, no powerpoints posted online. assignments are easy, depends on TM. would be helpful if notes were posted online however class is doable.
This class worried me due to the heavy weighted exams (midterm 40% and Final 45%) but if you go to class every week and do the chapter readings the MC questions are a breeze - requires a lot of memorization, but what psyc class doesn't? the thought question papers are pretty straightforward although they are worth 5% each - do them easy 15% to get
I took Cognitive Psychology and Attention with Richard. His lectures are interesting and informative. His exams are all multiple choice and the thought questions are fairly easy to complete. You must read the text he wrote for PSYC 330 at least twice in order to get an A. Memorization is key with all his courses. Read exam Qs carefully for hints!
He is very passionate about what he is teaching. The material is tough and very neuroscience based, which some psychology students will find difficult. He is really nice and willing to help outside of class hours, if you ask for it. Does not really like a lot of questions during lectures. 85% exam based, and the exams are hard!
Unfortunately, he only talks in lectures, but doesnt provide ANY lecture notesslides. That basically results in you having to try too hard to write down every important word instead of listening attentively. I think he makes it very easy for himself this way. The readings are the most important thing for this course.
No long assignments, just 3 'thought questions' which are worth 5% each and only 500 words. Exams not particularly tough, just make sure to read the materials your given. Attending lecture or listening to lectures online (they're recorded) is essential to doing well.
The course load isn't bad - 3 short assignments worth 5% each, midterm, and final (not cumulative). The first half of the course is easy, the second half a bit harder as it is more neuroscience based, which is most definitely NOT my area! Taking notes is essential to doing well. Lectures are recorded which makes this easy if you usually struggle
LOVED THIS CLASS! Dr. Wright is an amazing probably one of my favorite profs at SFU! 3 hour lectures went by super fast since he keeps the class interesting from start to end. 3 thought papers (600 words max) are super easy! For the midterm and final if you do decent amount of studying they're a breeze, all mc! Highly recommend taking this class.
One of the best profs I've had! He always makes class entertaining and you can tell he really cares about his students. I have also taken Psyc 221 with him and both classes were great! The exams and assignments are fair - exams are mc and there are 3 thought questions (500 words each). If only all professors could be like him!
I had no idea what to study for exams, and the lectures were hard to follow. He mainly tested us on memorizing terms from the handouts he gave, however he's way better than Spalek (psyc 221). Oh, and he hates it when someone asks questions in class, he doesn't have an answer 99% of the time and gets angry if people want to engage in a discussion.
Awesome class amazing Prof!! amongst many 3 hour classes i took this was most engaging and interesting!!! GPA booster. barely any readings. Interesting material. there's no textbook he provides print outs
Great class. To do well in this course you MUST attend lectures and read all of the chapters - which he provides to you for free, as he is still writing the textbook. Aside from the midterm and final, there are 3 thought questions worth 15% total. Exams are all multiple choice, but can be difficult if you don't know the material
Enjoyed going to his lectures. Good lecturer, but the textbook was dreadful and long. He does not post any lecture slides online and expects us to take our own notes. Lectures are recorded and he recommended we go back and listen to lectures again (as if we have extra 3 hours to spare EVERY week). Would not recommend for non-majors.
I think he designed this course for his own convenience. e.g. : MC exams, No lecture slides, made 250+ students get up, line up at the front at the beginning of final exam to show ID before picking up the exam (instead of going around to check as we write exam). This was a waste of half an hour which prompted us to stay past our designated time
He was a helpful prof, but some of the material was boring. Because there were no slides, it was confusing as to what to study. His texts were all MC but were worded weirdly, and the weighting for exams is too high. Why is Midterm 40%?? Don't take unless needed.
Exams are just midterm and final, so they weight a lot!! All MC questions but not easy.
Dr. Wright is a total sweetheart - he spent an hour of lecture one week giving us all amazing tips and basically a walk through on how to get into grad school. All the ins and out. You can tell he really cares about his students. Exams are heavily weighted and all MC, the textbook is ESSENTIAL TO THIS COURSE. He gives little to no written notes.
Exams are worth a lot, so pay attention during lectures! The mind maps are a helpful guide to see which areas to focus on for the midterm and the final. Overall, a great class :D
Course is interesting, but exams are tricky. Prof is nice and helpful. 3 thought questions are easy. Recommend this course.
You have to attend all the lecture because there is no any notes. You have to jot it yourself, and he always jump from topic to topic, which is hard to follow.
Never went to class, instead listened to the lecture recordings online. Lecture outline maps were helpful for studying for the MT and final, which could be a bit tricky. Thought questions were relatively easy. Textbook was necessary. Overall, a mediocre course. Wouldn't recommend to non-psych majors though.
Being in class isn't mandatory as he records his lectures but can be useful to see the video examples. His notes (which he doesn't provide, must take yourself) & the textbook (requires LOTS of reading) don't always overlap so both are important. The 3 thought questions were doable (worth 15%). MT (40%) & final (45%) were a bit tricky so don't cram!
He is a nice guy, offers good insight into subject material. However, to do well in this course, you must make good notes or team up with classmates and review notes. In addition, study the textbook really well. His questions are comprised of true and false multiple choice which can be confusing. As long as you are actively studying, you are solid.
There are only midterm and final but exams are detailed, so make sure to study hard and understand the concept also memorize the terms. Thought questions should be easy to get marks.
The course only consisted of 3 short responses, midterm and final. Exams are all multiple choices but they weren't easy. Make sure you read the articles thoroughly and know them inside out in order to do well.
I'm going to be real here.. this class was so extremely easy. If you have any science background you don't even have to go to class - I only went to the midterm and final. I don't understand most of these other ratings. Buy the textbook, read it, write the test, and get an A. Everything is in the book. 10/10 so easy would recommend
Awesome Prof!! Genuinely cares for his students and it's one of those classes in which you can actually pay attention for the full 2.5 hrs. To get an A - take rly good notes, read the textbook, don't cram. Exams are MC and each question is worth a lot (almost .8%) so don't overlook things in the notes or text. 80% + will get you in the A range.
Dr. Wright is a fantastic and often hilarious lecturer who really takes the student into consideration. He presents material in a way that is easy to follow. The thought papers and exams are very fair. A+!
Thought papers are quite easy if you put effort into it, however, there is a A LOT of material to memorize. He tests you on the tiniest of details, which was annoying. The midterm and final were tricky, so definitely study ahead of time.
Solid professor! Took the attention course with him and it was good! No textbook just in class notes/packages! Three thought papers that are super easy! And midterm/final is all MC! Just read everything and take good notes!
Just another mediocre prof, biggest issue I have with him is the format of his exams as they are needlessly difficult. There's is so much content to memorize and the True and False MC is comprised of the most trivial, random facts. It's completely absurd.
Dr. Wright's lectures are amazing and fun and provided alot of examples that helps explain the contents. Mid terms and Finals are all MCQs, based mostly on his lectures. Be attentive in classes and do your readings before hand. Though this course is memorization-based, take good notes and read over them before exam can give you at least a B range.
Dr. Wright is a very good lecturer. This was a very interesting course. The thought papers are an easy A, but are only worth so little and since the exams are worth so much (40%- midterm, 45%- final), it really doesn't matter how you did on them. Study ahead of time and try to re-listen to the lectures. Good luck!
extremely engaging lectures, doesnt pack lecture slides with what you need to know so you can pay attention to what hes saying. also gives interesting examples for each topic. course is about half lecture half textbook
Interesting lectures that are recorded which is useful when studying. No lecture slides as he mostly just talks for the lecture so make sure to take good notes. 85% of your mark comes from tests so you want to make sure to study lots! It's mainly focused on lecture materials but to get an A you need to also know textbook material as well.
He is always here to help students understand course materials, and welcomes students to interact in class. In order to get into the A range, you must take really good lecture notes and read the readings before hand. He also shares information about applying to grad school and lab research opportunities.
Attended lectures and read textbook, easy A for me
I loved Richard's class! His lectures are very engaging and he was very good at explaining things in a way that was easy to relate to and understand. Lectures also usually ended a bit early which was a plus! Exams are all multiple choice and the assignments aren't terribly difficult.
His lecture slides are mostly pictures, blank space, & little text. He also shows a lot of examples & demos to explain theories. There is no need to copy everything he says. Study the textbook, even topics he didn't cover for the exam. Assignments are just a few short paragraphs applying theories to personal examples, use vocab from textbook.
Assignments weren't tough and easy marks! However, the final was super hard and ruined GPA. Might have to retake the course as he doesn't allow final readjustments.
Dr. Wright is an awesome prof!! Anything you need to know for the exam are in his lectures slides. He has about 3 papers and his test are all multiple choice. But if you paid attention in class and studied the slides, you will do great in this course. Would definitely take another course with him!
I enjoyed taking a course with Dr. Wright. He makes class fun and interesting. Courses are lecture heavy so make sure you attend every class, take good notes (because he doesn't give slides) and study them well for the midterm and final. He also have 3 papers that he assigns as part of the overall grade. Would definitely take another course Wright!
I LOVE HIM he's so funny and entertaining and engaging and it's only the first class. May update this later
He made the lectures very funny, entertaining and easy to understand. Lectures are not mandatory because he records, but would recommend going because they are that engaging and enjoyable! At the end of final lecture the entire class applauded him. Do yourself a favour and take a course with Wright!
heres my update (after spending 1 semester with him) (I couldn't edit a previous review oops). I LOVE RICHARD SO MUCH. the whole class loved him. he is so friendly and pure and records lectures to keep them accessible. exams are multiple choice, "pick which is false". so nice during office hours, takes student feedback. he is a libra
Quite possibly my FAVOURITE prof at SFU. I was worried because I read previous reviews before taking the class, but taking this class was the best thing I ever did at SFU. Richard is super nice and his lectures are pretty interesting, rebut keep in mind he has very little text on his slides. Based on lectures alone, it's easy to follow along.
Wright cares about students and gives fantastic lectures. I never read the textbook and still got an A+ just from studying the lecture material. Would recommend going to class since he doesn't upload his lecture slides. Lectures are recorded and posted online. Easy and fun class
Dr Wright is probably one of my fav profs ever! He's so passionate about the material he is teaching and is keen to answer any questions. Super friendly and approachable, he's really reasonable and just all around a great prof. 100% recommend taking whatever class of his you can!
Probably the sweetest prof I've ever had. Such a nice guy. The course content was quite basic so really appreciated the recorded lectures that I could watch at double speed (Covid). Thought papers were a lot of work but I found them more interesting than the lecture content because you could explore topics more deeply. Will take his harder courses.
Dr. Wright is such an amazing professor! He's very supportive and caring towards his students, and is always willing to provide a helping hand. There's no other prof out there like him. Take him if you have the chance!
I was quite hesitant about taking this course online this semester, but Richard Wright made the class experience great. His lectures are very interesting to listen to and you can see he really is passionate about it as well. There were weekly quizzes that you could redo till you got full marks that were worth 10% altogether and three thought papers
Dr. Wright is an amazing professor! He is very caring and genuinely cares about his students. However, there are 3 assignments worth 30% each and the instructions and rubric are not very clear. Assignments also had no feedback so I had no idea what needed to be improved. Quizzes worth 10% total, unlimited attempts! So it's like a free 10%.
Each paper will be 2500-300 words, and he'll give you 3 weeks to write one. I would recommend attending all lectures so you'll have basic knowledge of the topics you will be writing about in your papers. The papers will be marked lightly by the TAs, and the marks you'll received will be mainly based on topics following the lectures.
Taking this class with Dr. Wright was one of the best decisions I have made. He made the course very interesting and coming to class felt less like an obligation and more like something I wanted to do by choice. I also loved the fact that our grades were based on papers instead of exams, which gave us the chance to research and apply what we learnt
I truly enjoyed Dr. Wrights class in almost every aspect. He was very caring and made lecture fun. Even over zoom I could tell he wanted to be lecturing and really enjoyed discussion with students. He provided readings by trimming many texts to make condensed and interesting material. His "Take-Home Exams" were challenging but fair and satisfying
Dr. Wright should be taking more upper-division courses. Loved the course. You can get an easy A if you work hard on the take-home exams. The cut-off for A- was 80%. Anything above 90% was an A+
Richard is a lovely & passionate prof. 75% of his class was take-home exams (papers) & although thorough criteria/time to prep, I found them a bit unfair. They were generally on topics we had yet to discuss. I struggled to justify 3/4 of my grade being on content we had not yet learned when exams normally test knowledge on taught material.
Exams are take-home exams where you're expected to teach yourself the topic, then you hand in the exam and learn how you should've answered during the lecture. He wouldn't answer clarifying questions because he refused to "answer your exam questions" so the whole class was just confusing. Felt very backwards and killed any personal motivation.
He's very nice and gave lots of examples that related to the concepts that he was talking about in class and was easy to follow. Course content itself wasn't too hard to understand, but overall grade depends on how essays are graded and what questions are asked on quizzes.
Took PSYC221, then 330 online. BAD IDEA! Written exams test on content you never learn until the lecture AFTER you submitted the assignment at 230PM. Wright wasn't accommodating to CAL students, ignored students, told us to take his "word" for unfounded claims. Unfinished textbook, random articles, quizzes unrelated to course & hard to understand!
Amazing prof. Only regret is that classes had to move online for the last part of term because of COVID. So helpful, great with answering questions and explaining concepts, inspired me to pursue my future career choice. Challenging class, but if you pay attention and take good notes in lectures, read the material, and actually try you'll be fine.
Amazing prof - one of the best at SFU! Explains concepts clearly and assignments fully allow students to demonstrate their knowledge. He often adds personal funny stories/anecdotes to his lectures which just make his lessons all the more engaging and interesting! Highly recommend
Such a great prof!! If youre a strong writer you will definitely do well because there are 3 take home exams. Hes a super knowledgeable and kind guy. Definitely recommend him for 221 and looking forward to 330 with him
Dr. Wright is really funny and made the lecture material (which I found pretty dry) fairly easy to listen to. His lectures are sort of disorganized, and the take home exams are tough. If you want a good grade on them, start early!
Dr. Wright is great. He's passionate about cognitive psych and tries his best to make the lectures interesting. Some of the take home exam questions are pretty vague and require a lot of research but overall they were fair. The quizzes are usually pretty simple but I found the last one challenging. Average was pretty consistently 75%.
so handsome, very #relatable, talks about his wife, silly guy.
He's very funny and keeps you engaged throughout the lecture. His exams are take-home and typically easy if you follow the directions given. Only need to study for the online quizzes which are based on both lecture and textbook material.
A professor that loves what he does! His class is really interesting and easy to get through. 3 take-home exams covering topics that we haven't learned about. I thought it was going to be difficult at first, but they are fairly simple plus you learn a lot. 5 quizzes and he omits the quiz with the lowest score. I highly recommend taking his classes!
Professor Wright is such a great prof, I really enjoyed the class. He sometimes gets lost in the lecture, but he makes the lecture engaging and funny so it doesn't affect the flow of the class that much. He is so approachable and it's clear that he loves the material he teaches. His class sometimes feels like a fever dream but in a good way?
Dr. Wright was so wonderful! His teaching method is amazing! I found that I never lost focus (even though it was a 3 hour lecture). His quizzes were fair, and I found that the take-home exam papers were actually kind of fun to do! If you have the chance, take the class with him!
epic prof. even though his lectures weren't mandatory, i found myself looking forward to them every week :)) his lectures are super engaging and you can tell that he loves the material he teaches. make sure to start the written exams early and not leave them until the last minute!
Richard was a great prof who was very passionate about this class. Going to lectures every week was exciting because he was excited to teach. The course is easy to manage with the 5 quizzes and 3 take-home exams that are fun because it allows you to digest the materials you have learned.
Prof Wright is very clearly passionate about the content he teaches. The lectures were 3 hours long and he gives a single 10 min break about 45 mins into the class. Due to the strike, we were only graded on two exams. He covered maybe 20% of the content in the exams prior to their due date, and gave no feedback which was tough. Nice guy though
Lectures were 3 hour long unhelpful rambling sessions. No slides were posted, as his consist of pictures only. Quizzes were only 20 minutes long with disorganized formatting, and inconclusive marking standards. Reading the textbook did not help.
This class seemed slightly unfair tbh. 2 take-home exams were 30% each and consisted of content we hadn't even learned yet. A strict 1500-word count wasn't enough. The 5 quizzes were fair if you took the time to read the textbook, but overall, I just found the lectures pointless. Richard is a very sweet man though, and he sent frequent reminders.
Dr. Wright was my favourite prof this semester. Take home exams are tough but you have two weeks to work on them and he tells you the grading criteria at the beginning of the semester - start early and you'll be fine (they're like a paper you need to research for, not a regular exam). Quizzes are fair and cover lecture and readings.
Richard is a very funny and interesting person and I enjoyed taking the class with him. I found the quizzes to be a bit difficult if you don't put in a solid amount of effort in studying but the take-home exams were relatively straightforward and the readings were usually not too long and pretty interesting.
You can tell that Richard loves teaching and has a clear passion for psychology. Not only did he help you to understand the concepts in a clear way, he also helped prepare students for grad school and planning ahead.
Richard uses an essay-style take home exam format rather than in-person short answer or MC exams. If you prefer this, he's an amazing prof who gives great lectures (+ recorded). The weekly readings vary in length but are usually easy reads (and usually fun). There is more writing than a usual psyc course but less memorization and no in-person exams
Richard's PSYC221 class is engaging and informative. Though the take-home exams can be challenging, his clear passion for the material makes lectures enjoyable. unstuck AI proved a helpful study tool alongside the textbook.
MY FAVOURITE PROFESSOR EVER!! This is my 3rd class with Richard. He records his lectures and grades have usually been on quizzes (40%) and take home exams (60%) He is very accommodating and understanding. He sends messages and reminders every time we have a quiz and exam which i find very helpful. love him fr
Great prof, he cares about the material and teaches well. he's also just a fun guy. Only reason for the 3/5 difficulty was the lectures were 3 hours and there's a ton of info. He always let us out 30 mins- an hour early though which was great. Take home exams were quite long papers, but we had 2-3 weeks so cant complain. def recommend
The exams for the course are open book, but all the content on them is stuff that is never covered in class or lectures. Stay away if you care about your GPA.
Exams are open book and very vague, but asking for super specific things. Very hard to do well on them.
Exams ask for tons of information, but have a low word limit, making it impossible to include all the necessary information in a cohesive manner.
Papers were more of a creative writing assignment / gave you the chance to be interested. Dr. Wright is an entertaining lecturer and always happy to answer questions, he made the topics all very interesting. 2 take home exams and 5 quizzes only
Dr. Wright is an amazing lecturer, he is so engaging and makes learning the material fun. Take-home exams were straightforward. Quizzes were harder but manageable. Overall, an amazing guy who cares about his students
This was my second class with Richard, and like 221, I appreciated the format of 2 take-home exams and 5 quizzes. However, the quiz questions were overly specific, with just one minute to answer, and the lengthy wording often consumed that time. Also, the lack of a grading rubric for exams made it difficult to know how to improve for the next exam.
He is very nice... however this course is very much a filler course at SFU. His course format is awesome as its two take-home exams and four quizzes. The exams were straight forward but very time consuming. The quizzes were brutal. Take this course if you want to get better at analyzing research and writing papers.
Lectures were for the most part fine. Course structure was good for the most part. 2 take home exams and 5 quizzes were the only graded components. Not a fan of the take home exam format which rewards leaving parts to the last minute.
rating high because dr. wright is a chill guy and knowledgable prof. hated take home exams: 2000 words to cover 5 broad topics with sub-questions and are marked with very subjective criteria that isn't really spelled out well. i'm usually an A/B graded writer but scored remarkably low on exams that i busted my butt for due to these reasons
He posts readings, last course he posted audio lectures too. Just online quizzes and essays. If you read some material for the quizzes, and spend some time to research well and write solid essays you can basically take this as a background course. I took another class with Richard and he's great in lecture too. Got an A+ and never showed up.
I really enjoyed Richard's lectures. He keeps things light and fun, which is always welcome during the 3 hour lectures. The material covered is interesting, it doesn't go as deep into the weeds as some classes, but instead covers a wide range of topics related to attention.
Online Quizzes are at very rigid time schedules (worth 40%) so if you are busy when they are scheduled just drop the course and take it with the next prof.
Dr Richard Wright is a great lecturer, I found his classes fun to go to. There were online quizzes for every two lectures, as long as you listen in lecture, they are easy As. The exams were take home and not everyone might like that but they were easy if you use deatil and examples. He has become one of my favourite profs
This class wasn't very hard, but I found the material uninteresting and the lectures dragged on forever. He's a very slow talker and tends to go on political tangents. However, if you listen to the lectures online and provide lots of creative examples for the take-home exam you should do fine.
he clearly loves teaching, he really wants his students to do well, the class was kinda difficult but againt he would answer questions that would clear it up. defintally one of my favs
He's so kind and sweet, you can tell he really cares about his students, lectures are easy to follow along and the quizzes /exams are created fairly
Such a fun and easy going class, only graded by a few things with a wide timeline, no surprises or unexpected challenges
Would definitely recommend taking any course with professor wright, he takes the time to re-explain topics if you don't understand them in a kind way without making you feel stupid, unlike other profs
I found his lectures boring and the slides didn't include much information.
Be prepared to spend 5 days or more on the exams to do well, as half of the questions were not taught and we were forced to do our own research. Quizzes were okay, aside from the odd time limit. Lectures were somewhat entertaining, but not very informative. Still salty my 87% was given a B+ and not an A-
Ok lecturer. Hard class to excel in with online quizzes with very high average scores. As well as take home exams (unrelated to course material) with very limited word counts and broad questions. You need a 90 overall to have a shot at an A and few assignments can make it difficult to get there.
Received a B with an 85%. No grade appeals allowed + grading scale changed the day before final grades! All modules/syllabus removed off Canvas after term ended. Kept up with the 50+ page readings EVERY week. He sets up students to fail, STRIVES FOR IT! HE OUTRIGHT IGNORED ME MULTIPLE TIMES when I ATTEMPTED to ask a question during lecture break.
