Very nice, accent does not really get in the way. Very smart and presents interesting material. Basically a reading and discussion class.
This man changed my life. Incredibly inspiring and motivating. I learned so much in his class. The papers are easy and discussion is great. Respect him, he will like you.
Great Prof. Recomend going to his office hours and talking to him personally if any problems are encountered, or if any confusion occurs. He'll clarify for you. Funny guy.
Really funny guy. Has an opinion about everything. He grew up with a hard lifestyle, but is a great professor. He is not super clear on everything and his class is kinda a buzz kill, but if u go to his office hours and write papers early, he'll love you. Speak up in class too he really likes classs participation
RICH IS THE MAN!! With that being said he is one of the smartest humans i have ever come in contact with. If your lookin for a prof. who is gonna give you note after note slide after slide, then test you on it drop the class. but if you wanna think a little bit and feel comfy talkin as a class then Im all about it.
Prof knows more about American History than any American I know. Was very intelligent, funny, and helpful. He will make you think, he does require you to read. You will learn, its interesting matieral, unlike any other prof i've had. If you want a blow off class with mindless work, dont take him.. But hes awesome..
Rich is smarter than any man i know, but he does not answer questions. He walks away from you without answering what you had asked. He also personally attacks people in front of the enire class.
He's a very intelligent man, but you will have no idea how he grades, until you get your papers back. He does not know how to explain what he actually wants, and changes his mind 160 times about projects. He really likes participation, you HAVE to be able to think for yourself, but think in a way that he does!.. its weird.
Smart Guy but is unclear with directions. He has a tendency to pick favorites in his class. You pretty much have to just wing it because even when you try to cater to what he wants he will still mark you down for something.
A great guy, & the information presented should have been extremely interesting. He's very random in his teaching, jumping from one thought to the next without making a coherent connection. He isn't clear on what he wants from you and does not clarify. It is confusing& I often felt stupid & frustrated. I DON'T RECOMMEND HIM.
Very easy if you basically are his slave and like to do things that do not make sense no tests just 3 papers he grades very hard average grade 17/25. Not including your group presentation, good luck or get out
Rich is very passionate about teaching. Many people will mistake this for brashness. But what he really wants is for students to engage him, come up with counter points and evidence to support them. Lastly, your grades on your papers will not necessarially reflect your term grade. If you come to class and participate regularly, it will be better.
pretty easy grading the papers.. our class has 3 main papers and no final exam. His African accent is cool but he has difficulty explaining directions. Easy to talk to but gets upset easily when no one speaks in class. Not too bad of a class, I would take him again.
Great professor!! He really cares about his students and getting them to think instead of just memorizing the material. No exams, just 3 papers which really are not that difficult if you do the readings. Dont listen to what other people say, he is DEFINITELY someone to take!
He seems to have a difficult time explaining things, or thinking of what he really wants to say, but he does seem to make some good connections. There is no final exam in the class, which is really nice, and he's not a hard grader on the three papers that you do have to write for class.
One of the best.He is realistic. This man actually cares about his students walking away with as much as possible from his class. he is intelligent and noone should leave GV without taking a class with him.
Yidana is a really nice guy and the class was really easy, but I didn't really get anything out of the class. Class was cancelled 10/45 times and the discussion wasn't on the readings. Grades were based on participation and three papers, which could be freewrites and on the readings, in my mind, further decreasing the value of the class.
I didn't get much out of this class. He was clearly very passionate about politics but most of his lectures were personal rants that made little to no sense. His standards were incredibly low and it would be easy to slide by doing next to nothing in his class.
This prof is very boring. He would go on rants about things not related to the class. He would say he would put reviews on blackboard and never did. He never tells you what your grade is throughout the semester and he never replies to e-mails. Goodluck if you take him!
Great man, although he has a unique way of teaching and it is sometimes difficult to understand he cares more about your understanding of things rather than how much you know. good teacher
Rich is a very nice man, and he keeps class interesting. As long as you go to lectures, you'll do just fine on all of the tests. The more you speak up in class, the better you do. He favors you the more you show up to class. I'm probably taking social problems with him next year.
Rich is a great guy and is genuinely interested in your success in the class. He definitely favors the students who show up and will bump their grade if on the edge. The exams are somewhat unclear, but he will drop your lowest. He's a really interesting and funny guy and I'll be taking him again for Social Problems.
While he is a really great and fun guy, I would not recommend him as a professor. He has low standards and his way of teaching is unorganized and very confusing. Class discussions were uninteresting and weak, and he often spent the time sharing only what he thought about issues. Overall, I got very little out of the class.
Yidana is the Man.
Rich is a really cool guy that shares a good amount of life experiences and the class isn't really a class it is a more of a talk. He really likes volunteers and rewards them. His test are pretty easy if you do the readings to an extent. Go into his office on occassion! Fun teacher that likes to laugh. Read his directions on the test.. bonus
I had a very close-minded viewpoint prior to taking rich's class. He totally changed my viewpoint on everything, not just society. Lectures were interesting and intriguing. Exams were the only thing you were graded on.. but if you read and pay attention in class they are very fair. This guy is hilarious and very insightful! Need to take him!
He was extremely confused and not helpful at all. I'm leaving the class with a strong hate for sociology..
I would not recommend this professor at all. The class was incredibly unorganized and any attempt at organization failed. Several e-mails always followed the distribution of study guides with corrections. The only highlight of the class besides it ending was his use of personal experiences to teach. Cool guy , but I would avoid at nearly all costs.
When we didn't do well on the first test, he decided to change his teaching approach. The problem, he did this for every test. The inconsistency made all of my studying pointless. I feel like he thinks this is a philosophy class, not a soc class. This interesting subject was became so confusing and frustrating. I do not recommend him at all.
Not only was I incredibly disappointed with this professor, I was even more disappointed with Grand Valley for hiring him. I hated this class with all my heart. He didn't listen to student suggestions and was unreasonable. His logic makes no sense and he couldn't even back up his answers sometimes. Awful, awful, awful class. Do not take!
IN MY OPINION... This Prof. is really a nice guy. Unfortunately, he is not helpful, will not respond to emails, has to scrap tests over mistakes he has made, and is always running late. He does conduct class in a professional attire and yells your business across the room. His exams are impossible because they are written in his broken english.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! He is not helpfull at all and his tests are so hard. You have to be a soc major or a genius to pull off an A. Not easygoing and his way or no way.
Funny how the students who didn't like him were the ones who didn't read the syllabus or follow his guidelines on test taking. He has a lot to offer but the close-minded students stuck their noses in the air. I would recommend this class to every living person. Period.
This class was very easy and very hard. His exams are tricky, think a lot to answer simple questions. He can be unreasonable when you bring up clarity issues with his test questions. However, if you pay attention in class, read the book, and study you can get an A. He is a very interesting prof, with great lectures. I took a lot from this class.
A straight A student, I found this class incredibly discouraging. My major is Soc but Yidana made me dread going to class. Test questions were insanely confusing and he did not adequately explain anything. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. The stress associated with it will increase as the semester progresses.
I would recommend taking this class with another professor. His test questions were hard to understand, and he said this was because they were written in "sociological language."
He is not a professor to take for an easy A. If you want to learn take him. His tests are super confusing but you will learn so much in this class. Go and talk to him and he will help you out. I got a C+ but I learned more than in any other class.
Nice guy, terrible prof. Don't take his class.
Great guy, decent prof. He is very funny, making the class more enjoyable. A little bit confusing, but you get used to it. If you go to office hours or even ask questions in class, he is very good about explaining and helping you to understand.
I do not recommend this prof. he is very difficult to understand. Although he is pretty entertaining in class, it is not worth the confusion with assignments, tests, and grades.
He is a very philosophical person and much of his material reflects this. His tests were easy though and the study guide is very helpful. His grading scale is odd and everything is lecture based.
Prof Yidana makes students think. His class wasn't hard, if you read the book and went to office hours. He really cares about the well being of his students. I highly recommend him.
If you want jargon and big words take this class. Presentations and explanations could be clearer. Exam made no sense, essay formats would help on exams.
Rich believes that psych, soc, ethics, ect.. all play a role together, and thats how he teaches. If you go to class and are an active listener the class is very enjoyable. I learned more in this class then any other class ive taken. He is passionate and VERY smart and I would recommend him if you really want to learn. I really enjoyed his class!
Dr. Rich is extremely passionate about the subjects he teaches and everything he says in lecture makes you THINK about the world, human nature, ethics, morals etc. If you want to feel depressed about the world and change the world than take Dr. Rich. His exams are pretty easy but requires brain power, just read the text and listen in lectures.
Professor Yidana is very interesting and has a lot to say about the material. He's funny and engaging. Just read the book and go to lecture and you should do fine. Exams are 15 points each, and there's a bit of room for extra credit. If you read carefully and think about the exam questions, they're pretty simple.
Yidana is inconsistent. Changed the syllabus midway through the semester and still didn't follow it. Condescending, pretentious, and too outwardly opinionated. Do not take this class or this professor.
Prof. Yidana is AWESOME! He constantly reminds his student that he is not there to be your best friend so don't expect an easy A! I took this as an requirement for my major and now it's my FAVORITE class!!! His grading scale is ridiculous though, an A is 98-100! With that being said,he also gives a couple of extra credit points on his exams..
I love this professor so much, he keeps the class interesting and gets to know students names and actually care about them. His tests are a bit hard but they are possible if you study. He is always willing to help you if you go to his office.
I would not recommened taking Yidana as a professor. Although he is very funny, he is very confusing. During lectures, he tends to drift off onto another topic that has nothing to do with the subject and I feel as though the class was very UNORGANIZED. There were times when he was suppose to post up the exam study questions and would wait 2 days b4
Yidana is one of the smartest professors at Grand Valley. I'm willing to put all my money on that. The class is not hard. All you have to do is do the readings, participate in class and of course do the assignments. He is more concerned about you learning than anything else. He makes the time to meet with you if you can't do so during regular hours
Yidana is an awesome professor. He is hilarious and will definitely keep your attention. He really cares about students learning, and gives out random points to help students out. I would definitely recommend him as a professor.
Yidana is confusing and not helpful whatsoever. When going to his office hours, he acts put out and bothered. His powerpoints are so confusing. His class is disorganized and frustrating.
Yidana is confusing, unclear, unprofessional, and disinterested in teaching our class. He is always late; he was an hour and a half late for the very first class of the semester. His PowerPoints do not make sense, the readings are terrible, and class discussions result in him criticizing our opinions when we don't agree with him.
Extremely confusing. His powerpoints make no sense, and while his lectures are passionate and make more sense than the rest of the class, they have nothing to do with the material covered. The exam questions are a paragraph long with many grammatical errors, takes 5 minutes to understand the question. Would not recommend him at all.
I found his class difficult to follow and often times confusing. Every class is a powerpoint lecture. He barely used our textbook, leading to more confusion. His exams were pretty straight-forward in that if you reviewed the powerpoints you could do fairly well.
He has a very unorganized way of teaching. He bouncees all over with you tube videos and movies. If you like to stick to hard facts and less opinions then DO NOT take this course.
In class, he is an amazing prof. He's really interested, uses good examples and is funny. Based off of class, he is great. But when it comes to papers and due dates. he is the absolute worst! He's confusing, constantly changes requirements, and expects way too much for a beginner class. He said we could chose a final or a paper, choose the final!
He is a genius professor. He expects a lot from his students as far as intellect. If you read the assigned chapters and come to class PREPARED to have analytical discussions then I guarantee you will receive an A. If you are a slacker then you wont get far in his class.
Seems intimidating, but as long as you pay attention in class and do the reading, you won't have any problems. He is a very interesting and cool person, and does a good job explaining the fundamentals of sociology. The tests are easy. He didn't like the textbook but used it pretty frequently. Highly recommended.
Professor Yidana is very smart, funny, unconventional and high energy! Highly recommend! Beneficial to read assigned texts carefully as they apply to class discussions, tests and may use for research paper. He sets high standards for the research paper, is willing to help with thesis ideas, writing and citations.
Overall this class was not that hard, like unbarable, but it was a challenge. My advice is if you must take him then for the Final TAKE THE EXAM NOT THE PAPER!!! EXAM YES:).. PAPER NOOOOOO:( I had to learn this the hard way.
Prof Yidana is a very interesting man in class to listen to, but I found that his lectures and power points are not very well organized, nor did they make much sense to me. The tests weren't that difficult, mostly self explanatory questions and answers. Never read a page of the book and got B's on the exams. He was a decent teacher.
I did not like this class, nor was I a fan of the prof. He is a very funny African man with his accent, but as a teacher he is unorganized and he makes his powerpoints very difficult to follow. Most test questions are so long that you don't even understand the question. Despite all of this, I passed this class with an A-, and so can you.
The professor jokes around a lot in class and is somewhat unorganized. I only use my book to get the vocab. The test aren't hard you just need to do the vocab understand the concepts. If you like joking around in class , take him.
Professor Yidana....he was a very funny, nice, African American guy. Yet his teaching style wasn't proficient. He was all over the place with points and writing on the board. Any written assignment... Good luck. Grade is mainly on the 4 exams and final. Take a different professor if possible.
This class was difficult and confusing to understand. The professor's notes were not clear and all over the place. His powerpoints barely made sense and most of the notes he wrote on the board you could not read. His exam questions were too long and half the time I did not even understand what he was trying to ask. I do not recommend him at all.
Very unclear, misguided professor. Seemed to be all over the place both with the lecture and with the course schedule. Content and directions were inconsistent. Hand-written comments on papers weren't legible.
Overall he is a really nice down to earth guy, he just expects a little too much out of his students. Would post 50 page readings, 3 hours before class, which I would not be able to read because I had a classes back to back before his. Attendance isn't mandatory but if you expect to know any of what is going on you better be there every class
This class was a struggle all semester. The exams (there are 4 plus the final) get progressively harder and it's difficult to get an A in the class. He will call on people randomly. It is apparent though that he knows what he is talking about and clearly has a huge understanding of sociology.
While Yidana seems very smart and knows sociology well, he criticized students who gave differing opinions and was very rude and cocky. I found it very hard not to literally walk out of class because of his attitude. I did well in the class by rereading all the chapters in depth. He also makes a 96% and A, a 93% an A-, a 90% is a B+
Misguided, disorganized, lacks a general understanding of how to teach run a classroom. The core of the class--basic morality 101--is so easily understood that he seems to over-reach in making the class "difficult". A 90% is a B+, an 83% a C+, etc. Every single aspect of this class a disorganized mess.
Don't come into this class thinking it'll be easy. Yidana had the credentials to teach it, he teaches from experience and everything he lectures on had no candy coating.
Prof yidana is an interesting professor. He is sometimes cluttered minded and doesn't know what he exactly wants. His past is very interesting though when he shares personal information. There is 5 exams including the final, and one of the exams he gives everyone 100%. participation is key, RAISE YOUR HAND and answer questions and he will love you.
He hates people who text in class you will get ten points taken off your final grade basically a whole letter grade if he says something to you. Its a bit ridiculous in his methodologies behind it.
Prof Yidana is a great guy and very interesting to listen to during lectures, I believe he is very qualified and brings real-life experiences to class. Unfortunately, he is not clear about his grading criteria and his expectations for assignments like papers. He has left the entire class very frustrated with our end of term paper.
His is unclear on his lectures. He makes powerpoints but doesnt follow them at all but still expects yout to learn it. Not many options to get points so if you do bad on the exams you will do bad in the class. Overall, i would choose a different professor.
I wish I had looked at Rate My Professor BEFORE taking this class with Yidana. His lectures are unclear, and he has no organization when it comes to writing down notes on the board. He doesn't give a clear study guide, and when it comes time for tests he says to read the chapters again, which is not helpful at all. He has good intentions, though.
Yidana knows what he's talking about, it's just that he doesn't teach it very clearly. It's hard to read what he writes on the board. Also, he has powerpoints, but doesn't read directly from them. This is difficult because you're trying to write down what's on the powerpoint and what he's saying. Many questions on his exams are common sense.
He has a thick Ghana accent, so he can be difficult to understand. No electronics are not allowed in class, he takes attendance daily and participation matters. He grades exams weird: there might be 40 questions, worth 30 points, so you can only answer 30 questions or 25 plus one multiple choice- if you answer one more, you get a zero on the final.
Professor Yidana is outstanding. However, most students are from the United States and they had a thick accent, which was difficult to understand. This course was challenging and changed my perspectives on global politics, culture, and the African Diaspora. I only wish I could take the course among students who are more intellectually-inclined.
Yidana is very knowledgable and fair with grading. Pay attention and show that you're learning and he will love you!
Very nice, cool, unique man. Has a worldly perspective sense he is from Ghana and has a cool/thick Ghana accent. It can be very difficult to meet his expectations. He is very unclear and very confusing. He explains things very poorly. He expects us to know what he is talking about at all times with little/no explanation. It is very frustrating.
Very unorganized. His tests are very difficult as they are multiple choice with "some right answers" but you have to pick "the best right answer" power points don't line up to what he is teaching, his writing are scribbles and all over the board. One of my most stressful classes
Does not make any sense. A nice, knowledgable man but has poor teaching skills. Test are very hard. I would not take again. Im putting a lot of effort into this class but am not going to receive a good grade. Im very disappointed that I paid money for this class and this is the type of education I am receiving.
Professor Yidana was very confusing and misleading. He didn't understand students opinions very well. It always seemed like any students answer was wrong. He does give quite a lot of random extra credit and on one test he gives everyone a 100%. There is a lot of assigned readings but no homeowork.
Worst professor I've had at gv. Missed two classes, he lowered my grade down a whole letter. Very strong accent. Any answer you give in class is always wrong. DO NOT TAKE HIM AS A SOC PROFESSOR.
He's very unclear with what he wants and his emails are quite pointless. He seems to be very cocky and didn't answer questions asked in email. Always referred you back to the syllabus which states very little about the class.
Not a fan, not a fan. I know too well you need to put work in and class may not be easy, but this was ridiculous.
He was a cool guy. I'd like to have lunch with him, but not sure if I'd take this class again. We read the chapters, he lectured. Not a difficult class, but not an easy A either.
I like professor Yidana as an intellect, but not so much as a professor. He's very knowledgeable about what he teaches, but the way he teaches may be problematic for some. If you're not one to read and analyze material critically and express it in/out of class, you won't like his class structure, but if you're okay with doing it, you'll be fine.
Probably the most intelligent man I have ever come across. Very lecture heavy and if you don't listen and process it, you won't pass the exams. He is unclear of what he wants and makes you figure it out yourself, not very connected with his students but has a swagger that makes you trust him. Intimidating but nice. Funny but serious. Hard class.
You have to work to get a good grade in this class, if you aren't willing to work or read get out. He is very intelligent & you will learn a lot about the society in his class, but you need to read & study his lectures. Copy things he writes on the board & go to his lectures. Bring book to class & be prepared to participate in class. He is a good
Very unclear on what he wants and when he wants it. Did not follow syllabus at all. Although class was difficult and dreadful, he was a very knowledgeable man and very passionate about what he's teaching. Tangents are a definite problem though.
His testing style is different, but if you keep an open mind, it actually allows you to get better grades because you can pick the questions that you are most sure of the answers to and leave the rest. He requires you to write substantive essays. He grades fairly. Come to class prepared and you will have great interactive lectures!
He is a professor that expects a lot from his students, and reading is MANDATORY to him. Hes an alright guy who speaks about sociology in a conceptual and realistic sense. He has essays on all his exams except the first one and expects a lot from the essays. Overall not to bad. Cool dude, just pay attention in class and you will be fine.
Get ready to read because he assigns chapters for every week, & he knows when you haven't read them He is very strict on class attendance-only allows 5 missed classes, o/w he will fail you Make sure you contribute to class lectures for some of your points He has a 0 phone use tolerance, so DON'T BE ON YOUR PHONE IN CLASS. Overall, he was good!
Overall he is a great guy. But a professor not so much. He is very unclear with due dates and is confusing during the lectures. If you want to pass, make sure you show up to every class and read the weekly chapters that are assigned because he knows when you don't read them.
Brilliant professor, ready to challenge his student's intellect with difficult questions. His lectures hold a lot to think about- one of the smartest professors I have had to date. His quizzes are hard (verbiage) but he gives ex. credit opportunities and assigns group discussions for points. A lot to read, but the books are great if you read them!
He was great but very difficult. Lots of reading! He's a tough grader on papers, and you have to attend class or you won't be able to pass. I would take him again, though.
Doesn't give a clear explanation of what he wants, and his feedback is confusing and vague. If you don't understand a question he gives, often times he doesn't understand why you are confused, and may just assume you didn't read. Could be a great professor, he is brilliant, but poor at teaching. If you are a good writer, may not be what he wants.
I would not recommend taking this instructor for an online class during the summer. He put plenty of effort in providing feedback on the papers, but his feedback left me with even more questions. Forget emailing him with questions; he will refer you back to the assignment sheet. Very smart, but EXTREMELY confusing teaching style.
Dr. Yidana is by far the best professor I've had in my college experience. He's an intellectual who will push you to think critically and broaden your knowledge. I will say that, if you're not interested in U.S.- Africa relations, I recommend you find something else. You have to care about the subject in order to do well. Good luck fellow Laker!
He is an awesome teacher,. He is super nice and funny but he doesn't seem to care much about his students though he does care very much about the subjects he teaches. He is a very hard grader, if one gets the option to do a paper or a multiple choice test, take the multiple choice test. English is his 9th language so he struggles sometimes.
He's a fascinating person but not the best prof. Grades intro level class like an upper level class and is very unclear of his expectations. Classes were usually discussion based and he didn't lecture much or say more than what students said which left lots of questions. All exams had a short answer and his grading on writing was very hard
Yidana is a very cold teacher and does not mind yelling at student VIA email or BB announcements and leaves almost every assignment unclear. forcing you to email him and get yelled at. I wouldnt suggest this prof to my worst enemy. Lots of dry readings and only 7 assignments.
I enjoyed Professor Yidana as a person but as a professor he's not the best. He is extremely intelligent but that seems to cause his expectations for his students to be extremely high. He does not give many assignments and expects too much. He is an extremely hard grader and often does not make clear what his expectations are. Don't skip class.
If you end up with this professor, you minds well plan your funeral now. He literally is the vaguest teacher you will ever have. Nothing makes sense, ever. You would have more fun getting throat chopped with a razor scooter.
This prof was terrible for my online GSI class. All he did was grade us one exams and that is it, so if you don't do good on the exams then good luck. The questions are hard and half the time they do not make sense since he writes them himself. He likes essays so get ready for those. All exams/essays are 25 pts so theres not a lot of room for error
Easily the worst class I've ever taken. Emails are very passive and don't help out. You're referred back to the syllabus for any question or clarification. Directions for projects are very vague and do not make sense. I was super excited for this class, but it just left me so disappointed in the end.
He was a nice guy, but he was SUPER unclear about everything we were doing in class. Everything he wrote, from notes to tests, was confusing and hard to understand, and even answering questions he was very unclear about when things were due and what was expected.
The most confusing prof I've ever had. I understand there's a language barrier, but he managed to say absolutely nothing in pages of writing. When I tried to email with q's, he replied (answering basically nothing) and referred me back to the syllabus that i had q's about... He seems very intellectual, but not someone that should be teaching.
Lots and lots of papers. Long ones, too. So many documentaries to watch and things to read. If you can't write papers, don't take the class. It's one of my strong suits so that's how I got an A, but otherwise, YIKES. He is quite funny when I email him, so I like his character, but it was a difficult class.
I thought since this was an online class I could ignore his bad reviews and I was wrong. Extremely unclear on what he wants. Graded on like 6 assignments that are basically just answering questions on his opinions. Don't try to email him, his English is bad and he just won't reply to what you're asking. Overall, he is pretty bad. Find a new prof.
This was by far the worst and rudest professor out there. He is very rude in the emails you send to him and he does not care about anything besides himself. He is the absolute worst.
Extremely unclear with what he wants in papers and assignments. Extremely arrogant about his intellect, which yes, he is a smart man, however he does not know how to teach. Does not know how to email with a proper answer to the question asked. I already 'graduated', but I still needed credit for my degree. BIG MISTAKE taking this course. DONT DO IT
Yidana grades very specific and does not explain himself or helps give any critique for students to achieve a better grade. Will take a few days or never replies to your email if you have a question. One week he will send us 10 things on BB, then we never hear from him until a few weeks later. Get ready to read textbook. DON'T RECOMMEND HIM AT ALL!
SOC 105 - he's very caring and gave a great amount of extra credit that could boost us two whole grades up (ex C+ to a B+). He dropped at least three of our exams and gave us 100% on them because he said he imagined we were stressed. My class was asynchronous and he cared enough to schedule class for those who cared. The textbook is online.
I'm sure he's a great guy, but as a professor, by far the worst I've ever had. Horrible assignment descriptions, never answers emails (and when he does they're usually kinda passive aggressive??), and assigns multiple hour and a half long+ documentaries to watch EVERY WEEK on top of badly written PPs. You'd have to pay me to take him again.
Dr. Yidana is incredibly smart and knows what he is talking about. He was very understanding to us students and gave us plenty of time for assignments, and extensions if needed. He was incredibly kind, but he was a bit of a tough grader on assignments, but nothing too unusual. Just try to understand his point of view and you should be golden!
I appreciated that he gave us full credit for a couple of assignments due to the circumstances of the pandemic. HOWEVER, each week we had hours of documentaries to watch and/or confusing powerpoints and announcements to read. It felt like he used a thesaurus to write everything and was often unclear of what he expected from us.
No structure in this course. Very difficult to understand what he is looking for in grading papers. Will take weeks to answer emails. Do not depend on what he says because he will often forget.
NOT good, used the books for everything. He does not know how to manage an online class. He expects 6+ hours of documentaries and readings on top of core classes that matter more to your major. Don’t take. Very unorganized.
You can tell hes an amazing guy and honestly pretty funny so i hate writing this. but anyone reading this TAKE A DIFFERENT PROF. All classes consist of watching movies and group projects, and if you ask questions he tells you i took this right from the book have had maybe 3 REAL lectures the whole year and have learned absolutely nothing.
Attendance is required b/c apparently you cant watch a movie or answer questions directly from the textbook from home. Almost all classes youll do a worthless group project. No real learning is done. Very condescending prof thinks he smarter than all but dont worry he wont grade on his level of knowledge since he knows we arent as smart
TAKE A DIFFERENT PROF WHILE YOU HAVE THE CHANCE!!! Oh my god he is the worst worst worst, forgets to post assignments, has the worst grading scale, does not teach anything and can not teach the material for the life of him. I skipped so much class because I could not stand sitting in his room.
His classes are unorganized and his teaching methods are fruitless. The class material is vague and he grades at random. Each announcement and assignment had numerous spelling errors, bad fonts, obscure language, and unclear directions. Professor Yidana is a smart guy and had some good talking points, but he has no idea how to teach a class.
His expectations for students are very confusing, and he is unclear about every assignment. His tests are handwritten by himself with very confusing prompts. He will have you turn in summaries through email, which makes no sense because he can post assignments through Blackboard. Heavy lectures and very unclear about what he wants from students.
do not take him. switch out before its too late. he is so confusing and grades hard and all of the assignments are so much effort for so little points. he will take away points for missing class, being on your phone, or doing anything unrelated to class which i understand but hes rather harsh about it. i have gained nothing from this class.
Professor Yidana is clearly a highly intelligent man, but he does not know how to make his knowledge accessible for his students. His lectures and assignments were EXTREMELY confusing, he assigned a ridiculous amount of readings and documentaries to watch, and sent out passive aggressive announcements. NOT recommended whatsoever.
Do not take Professor Yidana if you don't have to. The whole class was so unclear and unorganized and I feel like I never knew what we were supposed to be doing or when things would be posted/due. He's a nice guy so maybe he's better in person but as an online class this was awful.
Professor Yidanna is an educated man & it shows. However he is not a good professor. Classes are not organized or structured to give students what they need to succeed. I think he knows that his teaching methods are awful and therefore assigns ridiculous and tedious assignments of little to no substance. Take someone else if you can.
horrible! not friendly, and expects you to spend numerous of hours on a class that is not required. Also dosen't give clear directions on assignments.
He is not the most reliable professor in the world to say the least. You can tell he cares about the subject matter, Specifically technology and its sociological impact, but there's only so many times you can hear a man self promote his own book. Grading criteria is extremely confusing, he will go off syllabus (he had to have made it 4 years ago).
His lectures were disorganized. His slides were decent but don't expect them to have anything from the textbook. Open-note and at-home assignments, but with essay and short answer questions that don't make sense. Many group projects and poor communication skills, awful at putting in grades. 0/10
I'm someone who does well in school and generally enjoys classes, but this was unbearable. Yidana hardly ever answered questions directly, he graded people poorly because they didn't submit things exactly as he preferred (though he never made expectations clear), and his classes were VERY information heavy. He was a nice man, but I don't recommend.
Professor Yidana is a nice man but his class was very information heavy. Attendance is mandatory as tests cover his slides which rarely had information from the textbook. There were several small pop group projects as well. He writes tests himself and many of the questions are confusing or worded poorly.
Extremely poor organisation skills. Changed course structure several time in first few months. Didn't post anything for weeks at a time. Extremely poor comunication skills causing a lot of confusion of what is expected on the assignments. Also does not give adequate time to finish assignments along with other classes. Very confusing grading policy.
Works well with students and taking their opinions on time needed for due dates. However, his grading is weird and I never really knew what he wanted completed each week. Every week something was changed from the syllabus and we would get AT LEAST 5 emails about change of plans. He does help if you need extra time for good reasons.
He was a nice guy, really respectable and it was very clear he knew what he was talking about. Like he really knows his stuff, but he's not great at teaching it. It was just hard to understand the main thing he wanted you to grasp from his lectures because there was so much stuff. He means well but is lowkey confusing
This professor was lost in his own class. Absolutely no structure and it was a 50/50 whether we would even have class. He goes off on tangents that make absolutely no connection to the class material often. Learned nothing from this class.
Richard Yidana was a very difficult professor to please. It seemed like nothing was good enough. Whatever you do, do not bother emailing him with any questions. His responses are so rude and passive-aggressive (if u ever even get a response). He made me CRY he was so mean. If you have the chance, run from this professor.
I very much second the comment about NOT emailing him!!!! Very passive-aggressive email responses. There is no structure to the class with no set due dates or posting dates. Very few assignments and the grade book is often empty so you can't see how you are doing in the class. It's a very confusing and textbook/documentary-heavy class.
Avoid this professor if you can - his teaching is unorganized and his grading is harsh. However, Unstuck AI can be a helpful study tool to prep for his class. Overall, a frustrating experience.
Lectures are unorganized and are hard to understand. Test questions are worded weird and are hard to understand. He is passionate about his work but tends to go off track.
He can be confusing a lot, and many of the things he says in class (not on a powerpoint or in the book) are in the assignments. However, he is very passionate about what he teaches, and he is willing to work with you outside of class. He also takes forever to put in grades, but he does usually curve them so everyone has a fair grade.
Lectures were just him rambling and stopped us mid exam to let us know that there was a typo in one of the questions (there was more than one) and said that "the work study student" messed up. He also said one of the questions did not have a right answer as one of the choices. Someone else wrote up the exam and he didn't even proofread it.
This professor was horrible. I was in a Soc 101 class that he took over due to the other professor not being able to continue teaching. He admitted to us during our final that he hadn't even written our final and that his TA wrote it and he hadn't even proofed it before giving us the final.
Goofy guy! His grading methods were interesting, but he was very kind with all of his scores. If you want to learn sociology, maybe consider another prof, but if you want an A, just show up and participate occasionally. The lectures certainly are entertaining though
Avoid him. He doesn't care about students. Assignemnts are not clear and doesn't grade for forever, so good luck ever figuring out your grade. Don't miss any assignments, because unless you PLANNED being sick and let him know in advance, you don't get to turn in anything later. Don't email him either, he is extremely rude and passive aggressive.
Rude guy who clearly thinks he is better than everyone else. He's supposed to be teaching material, yet spends more time talking about what we will be doing. Also he didn't post the class sylabus until 2 weeks in.
prof yidana has an interesting teaching style and his instructions are often very unclear. i have no idea what he looks for in assignments because he grades very soft, so if you want an easy A, go for it. but if you want to learn, go elsewhere.
I would never recommend taking an online class with this professor. Instructions incredibly unclear, unhelpful responses, and little to no leniency whatsoever. Unnecessary assignments, takes months to grade assignments, and absolutely zero help.
Very confusing instructions, feedback is unhelpful, literally told me he rarely gives full credit for writing assignments, which they all are, grades with unreasonable expectations (example - one of his assignments is free write and he marked me down for not connecting ideas not in any lectures or book as if I was supposed to know to include it),
There is a lot of reading assigned, but I didn't do any of it. General themes can be gathered from lecture slides. All graded material is writing based. This is essentially a writing class with a theme of social issues. Do not miss any assignment or you will be knocked down a whole letter grade. whole class is only 450 points total.
Asked him for help on an assignment and he told me he can't help me because college classes are supposed to be hard and I need to struggle more.
I strongly advice to not take this course. If you have questions, he is passive aggressive in his responses and for a level 105 class, he takes it way too seriously. I have taken higher level classes with professors that are more laid back and respectful. His PP are not explained well and neither are his directions for assignments.
Definitely one of the best Profs. I don't know what they are talking about. He is a little aggressive, but you can tell he loves talking about this class. He is a very active teacher. Love him. 10/10 would retake this course.
I took Dr. Yidana this semester and I overall had a good interaction with him and his class. I will say to do good you should sit up front, interact with the class material (smile and nod your head), make yourself known, and make sure you focus on the blackboard things that are posted as he can post things that are due without saying it in class.
Yea nah, professor wasn't patient at all, didn't explain to well, the notes he wrote on the board were not even good they were sloppy couldn't see them, he doesn't explain his assignments good enough! Isn't cooperative.
He cares deeply about his students and just wants to see everyone succeed. Although his course can be a lot of material, it's not complicated work whatsoever. Also, show up to class and just give effort during group projects! He also gives tons of extra credit!!
