Its an easy course, and Richard makes it easier, take it with him - EASY A
Boring prof, makes the assignments hard and Long. NOT recommended
Nice guy, hard course, a lot of work
lot of work, but worth it
lots of computer-enhanced stuff, well-oprganized course
clear, fair, accessible. recommended!

lots of reading. awesome class, though
He's like online 24/7 to answer questions!
Grading scale is rediculous, 70% = D+ on my midterm?! Assignments horribly
Very accessible and helpful
Make the midterm and Final easier, please. Great, Helpful Teacher.
Rick is too good .... I love this guy!
Nice guy & excellent online support material, but the assignments are TOO long!
Interesting course but ASSIGNMENTS TAKE TOO MUCH TO COMPLETE!!
[ZACH'S PHIL 279] + [4 OTHER COURSES] = ZERO HOURS OF FREE TIME + NO SLEEP!!
Great guy but his assignments consume TOO much time!
I agree. He's a good prof but the amount of workload for his course is crazy!!
His assignments leave you withVERY LITTLE time to devote to your OTHER courses!!
More work involved for this course than ANY other course I've EVER done!!

With 4/more other courses, it is VERY TOUGH to fit in all the work he sets!
So much to read & understand in so little time!!
Definitely a smart guy, and always willing to help. Fun course for PHIL students
nice suits!

Great Prof, excellent online help.
He teaches in style
yeah, it's a lot of work. that's what university is all about. stop whining.
love the attire ... down to earth guy ... easy course

His assignments took like no time. Pretty easy overall
Great guy. Definately the coolest teacher thus far. Relates well with students
Assignments: VERY lengthy & more time-consuming than for most 200 level courses
His notes are very messy, and he's the way he presents the material is very boring.
The course materials were hard to understand but the assignments assigned by prof really helped me understand the material better. It was hard course but fun as well.
Assignments were long and repetitive
One of the more memorable profs who has a unique approach towards teaching. Down to earth and easy to get along with.
this guy is very effing sexy. distractingly so, as a matter of fact. hot accent, hot suits, hot cufflinks, good god damn. unfortunately, i had to wipe my drool & concentrate, it was a REALLY demanding (& time consuming) course.
Zach is a great guy. He would probably be an excellent 279 prof. I had great difficulty getting anything out of his 379 lectures though. He talks and teaches like a textbook. For me it would have been far better taught in plain english.
Dr. Zach is a good professor and makes the course interesting. He is funny and sort of quirky. His assignments are somewhat hard and lengthy, but his lectures are very straight forward. He is good at explaining and clarifying things if something is unclear.
Zach is a really awesome guy. He'll help you out with anything. He knows logic very well, and you'll learn tons. His assignments are long, >15 hours each. But you shouldn't get less than 100%, because you can grade them yourself. This course is challenging, but it's very straightforward. Zach is really cool, endearing, and a very stylish dresser.
The only thing I didn't like about his class work was a group assignment we had to do. Group work = bad. Also there is usually almost always a computer mark in there somewhere, where you have to participate on an online forum or something. Other than that, he is really nice and super hot. He always looks like an CIA agent.
Very good Prof in my opinion. At first i was iffy, he seemed really nervous and said "um" alot. But once you get into the actual course he really brightens up and loves to topic of logic.
Assignments must be concise, if this is not your speciality, you will find his classes demanding. You must do the readings to succeed. There is always an online component to his classes (discussion board). Can be unorganized, you have to be an active listener to benefit from his classes. Don't zone out.
Good looking, he dresses up very nicely...he explians so simply ans treat students humbly...he is really good Pro
Good teacher, fairly easy course. As long as you do a little bit of work on the assignments each day they are perfectly manageable and not unreasonable. Seems like a nice guy, impeccable dresser, but yeah, you have to pay active attention in lecture because his thoughts tend to be a little all over the place.
He is very difficult to understand because he stutters a lot, and I mean a lot. This is not the easiest course in the world but it is manageable. Use the book it is the only way to pass this class. But all in all he is a nice guy and pretty helpful.
Awesome Prof. Workload can be heavy at times, but prof is very intelligent and willing to help, as are the TAs. Assignments are well thought out and if you do them you will ace the tests.
Zach is nice and approachable. His lectures can be very confusing though, so don't depend on them. Read the textbook, practice practice practice, spread the assignment questions out evenly over the two weeks, and you should be fine.
Easy to approach outside of class but sometimes the lectures can be hard to follow. I don't think it is any fault of his, but rather the fault of logic using phrases like "clearly it follows from" and "easily you can see" in an introductory course. Still would recommend, most of your grade is from assignments which you can dedicate yourself to.
Excellent teacher, he definitely knows his stuff. The lectures and handouts are organized and helpful. There are tons of resources available: TA's, blackboard, and of course, the prof himself. I had a great experience with this course, although it can require a significant amount of time. (The prof is also frighteningly well dressed.)
smart. assignments were the hardest thing ever but lots of help available (online was crucial), and midterm and final are much much easier than assignments. provides practice midterm/final very similar to actual exams. oh and once i saw him not wearing a suit!!
Awesome class. Do let me point out the fact that he uses a textbook that requires it to be new(~$70) & there are 6 assignments in this course which really makes you *learn* your stuff. I highly suggest that if you want to enjoy this course, to make use of the discussion board and form a study group. Tons of fun and fairly easy on grading.
He taught us very well. You have to put lot of effort into this course.I had 4other courses and I'd have done better if I had more time to concentrate on logic.Don't take this with a full course load.Always engage in the discussion board.Take maximum use of office hours.TA Teppei is also helpful.Exams are similar to the practice. He is the best!!!
His slides are vary helpful use them parallel to the book.Always use the hints he gives.Start the assignments as soon as you get them.Form a study group.Get help from the prof and the TA's.Final and the mid term are some what similar to the actuals.Final was challenging than the mid term. The best prof ever ! Select him if you taking this course!
I struggled with this course and the lectures were very boring. I tuned out a lot thinking of other things. Otherwise he knows his stuff and is pretty cool if you get to know him.
Very smart guy. Very helpful, and understanding. He cares + tries, but his lectures are very dry, and his lectures explain what should be simple concepts by using overly formal, complicated definitions followed by one typically complicated example. Book is weak, and reads like a novel instead of a text book. Assignments rely on software from book.
While he dresses impeccably, the volume of work is insane, you'll never be able to hold down a full course load with this. Fortunately I took a compsci class and knew alot of predicate logic beforehard, because I didn't find the level of instruction particularly good. Avoid this class/instructor at all costs!
Great guy !
If you are taking a full course load, do not take this class! Homework assignments take a ridiculous amount of time compared to my other courses. Overall nice guy, but hate philosophy after taking this class (It was mandatory)
Dr. Zach is impeccably dressed and professional. He has a clear lecturing style and is enthusiastic about logic. Assignments are difficult and time consuming and grade rubric is tough (98% for an A+). Helpful in office hours, and cares about students. Very intelligent and has a deep understanding of a wide variety of topics in logic and mathematics
Do not take this class with a full course load.
Hands down the best introductory-level class. The assignments do take time, but they are worth half your mark and it is possible to get >100% (I did), and you can computer-grade them before submitting. Zach is a brilliant professor that is far above his position at the University.
I wouldn't recommend to take this course with this professor since he is the only one that uses a program to teach/mark. During class time he spends 10% of the time teaching concepts used in higher level Math or CompSci courses, 80% of the time teaching students how to use the program, and 10% going through examples while teach class concepts.
Prof is extremely boring in class. I find the TA's more helpful then the prof. Zach complicates the topics way too much. If you review the material and get help from TAs it isnt as hard as Zach makes them sound in class. He does not curve grades even though our class average was less then 50.. If you are not upto a challenge go with a diffrent prof
Dr. Zach is a good prof. Definitely a fun loving hipster, and really loves logic. The class contains resonably difficult concepts which prof. Zach sometimes over complicates. The work load is far too high for a first year course, tests are worth very little each though.
The workload is ridiculous for an intro class. There's an assignment every two weeks, and if you don't have a knack for the material, it can take days. I didn't find Zach very helpful, and he's a bit intimidating.
This course is easy, except Dr. Zach gives you a ridiculous amount of homework. As a student with a family, I had to drop the course. Not because it was hard (was sitting at a B+), but because of the workload. If you miss an assignment, you automatically lose 10% of your grade, and his grading scale is very harsh.
I spent on average 10+ hours every two weeks on each assignment. The course material was challenging, but Dr. Zach and his TAs made it clear. Dr. Zach is extremely helpful and very knowledgeable. Attend the PASS sessions and go to office hours. He's much less intimidating when you speak to him alone. Exams were tricky but not worth much.
Dr. Zach is clearly the best! I'm sure that necessarily at least 25% of the class was in love with him and for good reason.
Incredibly difficult small problems that will have you pouring over the free textbook that he wrote for hours with classmates. He'll basically confirm whether the answer is right or not before you turn it in but you really gotta work for it.
Great professor, very professional. Posts all notes online (great notes), and also provides a free textbook. The quizzes are somewhat time-consuming considering they're only worth 0.5% each, but other than that this course and prof are amazing.
The work load for this class is moderate. A 10 question multiple choice a week. 4 longer assignments over the semester (4-8hours ea.) and two tests, a mid term and in class final. The grading for the assignments was electronic and couldn't be submitted if it was wrong. The class has been changed drastically since previous years. Much easier.
Zach is one of the most professional professors I've had at this university. The problem sets (worth 50%) can take a lot of time to do outside of class, but most of them are marked online so feedback is pretty instant. Wouldn't take this course again because it was only a requirement for my degree, but Zach is a solid choice here.
If you have to take PHIL 279, this is the professor you want to have. When he teaches ,he is straight to the point and very specific for people to understand and gives good examples. This course is not easy though. Prepare to work hard no matter what prof you get but if you could choose, go with Zach.
Prof is fine, I'm here to leave a review of the course. DO NOT TAKE PHIL279. IT IS THE WORST COURSE YOU CAN POSSIBLY TAKE. YOU DON'T GET INTO THE HARD MATERIAL UNTIL AFTER THE DROP DATE. CARNAP IS GARBAGE. THIS COURSE BELONGS IN MATH NOT PHILOSOPHY. THERE IS VERY LITTLE ACTUAL PHILOSOPHY INVOLVED IN IT.
Most caring prof I have ever had, provides good understanding of the material through lectures. Gives specific chapters to read for each unit, along with slides, and extra videos. Wants every to student to succeed and gives you a fair chance to do so.
Remember it's a Logic course, not a Philosophy course. However, I really enjoyed the content, and Dr Zach played a huge role in that. His passion for Logic shone through in every pre-recorded lecture and synchronous meeting, and he was very fair in his grading, going back to change grading scales if he felt they were too hard after the fact. 11/10
A very kind man. Best prof I've had so far.
Dr. Zach is an amazing professor who truly cares for the success of his students. His grading system is very fair and he gives multiple chances to students to do better. Lectures are engaging and he is always there to help you along the way. Loved doing this course with Dr. Zach. 100% recommend.
Dr. Zach is easily the best professor I have had thus far in university. He cares so much and does his very best to provide as much help as he can. This course is very hard I think and having him definitely helped!
Honestly one of the best profs, especially during the pandemic. Super understanding and VERY fair. Logic is a hard course but he genuinely made it as simple as he could and took his student's feedback and made changes when needed. If you need to take Logic, try getting Zach.
I am speechless, this professor has blown me away. If you have a question he will help you out and has adapted to online learning so well. I would definitely love to have him as my prof again. By far the best prof I have had so far.
Incredible prof. Clearly explains topics in notes and lectures, provides open-source textbook. Grading is on a strange scale that ultimately assesses understanding, extra attempts are given on a token system and anyone who takes the time to understand the content will be given enough time and attempts to succeed.
Dr Richard is a real gem. PHIL279 is a fairly difficult course but he makes it simple for all the students. Also he is accessible outside of the classroom, he was the most helpful professor I've ever had!
This material can be pretty tough, but the prof keeps the difficulty reasonable and teaches the material very well. The class is super organized and it is in the student's control to get the mark they want. Work hard and put lots of time into the course and you'll do well. The PASS sessions along with the tutorial sessions are super helpful!
Great professor! He covers the content in pretty decent depth, gives a ton of practice, and even does a bunch of examples during lecture time. The workload gets fairly heavy if you fall behind just a bit tho. I'm pretty awful with allocating specific amounts of time to specific courses, so my advice is to manage your time well with this course.
Not gonna say much that hasn't already been said by others lol. Long story short, Zach's a cool guy, hella assignments, and hard content but delivered well. Word of advice though, PRACTICE THE HECK OUTTA THEM PROOFS!
Amazing prof. Difficult course, but provides many resources for you to succeed, given that you are willing to put in the work. Clearly cares about his students, and was exceptionally understanding during the pandemic.
Okay, so how we were graded was very new to me. It wasn't the normal "get a c- overall and you pass" but rather how many individual criteria you passed that counted which I think is actually better honestly. So basically, to get an 80 you'd have to get 80% on 80%of the quizzes/assignments. He was so so great! He was understanding and available.
Amazing prof. Genuinely cares about students. Take this class online if you can, he wants to help you succeed and will offer many chances. Has a different grading criteria but I actually preferred it. Attend office hours, ask for help when possible. He really does want to see you succeed and help to make it possible. Actually implements feedback.
Really nice guy. Sort of an odd grading scheme so make sure you fully understand how your mark is determined. Course content gradually gets more difficult and can be quite challenging towards the end. If you attend his lectures and use his (free) textbook you should be able to easily get an A.
This was a difficult course, but there is no one better to teach it than Proffessor Zach. He is very passionate about logic and will make sure that everyone in the class is following along to what he's saying. He's not a harsh grader; his main goal is simply that everyone understands the content. 10/10 would recommend!!
