the reason i transferred. dull, no sense of humour. i now get my grandpa's jokes
excellent professor, not boring, fair exams
a great course! very good professor!!
Zamoff is fairly unfortunate looking and has a REALLY annoying speech impediment
No Comments
Over-study for the first test so you know what to expect then the class is a piece of cake.
VERY boring lectures, class is not hard at all. exam easy if you go to class and pay attention. interesting topics and information.... fun!..... but zamoff needs some vocal variety!!!!!
Tried not to fall asleep during reading and lectures. Zamoff offered extra credit to raise your grade a possible 10%. Not much work involved. Give him drafts of your papers cause he'll fix everything that's wrong
Textbook SUx!
He's ok
lectures unbearable if we were not watching a movie, a moderate amount of work but material is fairly interesting. Hes a tad weird.
Boring lectures at 8am, attendence taken every day; tells the same story about teenage alchoholics every class for the first month or two. The class is really easy and leaves you unprepared and unsuspecting for the really hard final. Bad textbook.
WAY too early, tells the same stories, final was far too hard
He is really nice man, but a little ambiguous as to his expectations of students and how he would like this handed in.
Class was a little boring but there was hardly any work to do. Just 2 tests and one paper. Textbook sux unless you LOVE sociology. Still would recommend.
Super-easy class. Two tests and two papers. Only teaches 8am classes, which is the only thing that sux.
WAY too early, sociology is not interesting at 8 AM, plus attendance is mandatory and is taken at every class. Easy, but not for those who want to skip classes.
He wasn't the most interesting Professor and the textbook sucked, but he gave you the opportunity to do well by giving lots of extra credit which was a big plus. Not a bad class in the end, but the 8am classes sucked.
interesting class, terrible textbook, must go to class. Extra credit allows for huge grade boost (c to b, b to a). I wasnt interested in soc before i took this class, but now i am, interesting stuff
pretty easy, extra credit oppertunities. interesting class.
His teaching style is very bland, which makes the class pretty boring. The tests are pretty difficult and class attendance is mandatory. On the plus side, he's extremely amiable and he's always willing to help you out. His extra credit opportunity is fantastic.
His lectures are very boring and the textbook is ridiculous. Attendance is mandatory and you can't be late or else points are taken off your final grade. Test is hard because it seems as if he expects you to memorize every detail from the book. Names are very important. I wish I had had someone else
His tests are very difficult because he gives you so much information but only tests you on small obscure details. He begins by telling you that most people will do terribly on the first test. However, he does give a major paper and an extra credit paper which he will go over with you before its due
He is one of the most boring, anal people on the planet. The class was really easy and not very much work, though. Attendance required.
Terrible class, don't bother taking it. Role taken every class, mass points off your final average. Extremely boring, tests are hard, book is absolutely ridiculous.
Sometimes I wonder why would anyone say that this guy is interesting. He can make everyone in the class fall a asleep in a matter of 10 min. Boring, the way he talks is annoying and the stuff he teaches is not on the tests. For tests you need to remember pointless details and every single name.

Although his lectures can be dry at times, his is the most well organized class I have ever had. He tells you what he expects from you in order to get an A, and all you need to do is show up to class every day, read the dense textbook, do the extra credit, and you will have an A. I loved his class
Not the most entertaining teacher but really knows what hes talking about. Tests are hard, but fair. He gives extra credit and a paper which helps grade a lot. Takes role, and uses a boring text. Other than that, the class is great cuz he is very organized and tells you exactly what to expect
Tests are profoundly unfair. To get a good grade you must go to his extra credit events at Jackie Robinson week. 90% of the people who go to these events are extorted students. Few people go willingly because they events are painfully boring. Zamoff uses grading power to make himself look good.
He is absolutly boring and it's terrible class! don't take it with him. he makes you want to kill yourself in class, attendance is mandatory, and makes you dislike sociology. paper and extra is easy but exams are ridiculous! too hard for an intro class. don't take him!
The class started off very boring, but after a few weeks actually became somewhat interesting. Be warned, attendence is mandatory, although you can miss up to three classes. The tests are somewhat difficult, but he offers enough extra credit to raise your final grade an entire letter. The readings are bad, and somewhat necessary for the tests.
(Spring 05, Intro Soc). If you think this is an Easy-A course, think again. I got a B+, after the 10pt extra credit (the Jackie Robinson series lectures). Don't bother studying from the text(Practicing Soc...)..its irrelevant to the tests. After 3 cuts, youll get points taken out (i had 4) of your grade. Advice: Come to EACH class session ON TIME.
Ok, I really liked him as a person, his lectures were so boring and you can only miss three classes and he is VERY strict on that. Good thing is, you can fall asleep in theh back if you need to. Take all the notes though because the notes are what on the test, the extra credit boosts your final grade a full grade, easy but boring
Lectures are VERY boring. He Talks slow and it makes it even worst. can only miss class 3 times. Reguardless, it is an easy class. 2 exams and one paper worth 33% each. He is always willing to help you- you can even call his house. real nice guy. a whole grade (B- to an A-) avaliable for extra credit. TAKE THIS CLASS
Class boring, attendance mandatory. 3 excused absences. I missed 4, but he was extremely understanding. As long as you do well on paper and extra credit you will get an A.
I loved his class
boring, dry lectures; show up to class, can only miss 3 before grade goes down; tests hard but do EXTRA CREDIT! can bring grade up a whole letter grade and a third (C to B+)
Boring lectures. Main idea of class: "It's not black people's faults that they are poor/in jail - it's society's fault." Loves Jackie Robinson more than life itself.
Dreadfully dreadfully boring. Nice enough guy, helpful, offers extra credit. He takes attendance though and you can only miss three classes. Strange almost fetishistic obsession with Jackie Robinson. Pretty easy class gradewise, sitting through it is the challenge.
Pretty boring in beginning but interesting towards the end. Very easy class...just show up. Lectures are important because most of material in class is on tests. Study the people for the tests (almost everyone talked about is on the test). He's a nice, genuine guy who LOVES sociology...can be very interesting. Take the class...i'm glad i did.
Real good guy. Wants students to do well. Earned a B+ with very little effort in the class. Just go to lectures and you'll be fine. Not real interesting material, but a good elective class to take that won't hurt your GPA.
Wow-you walk out of that class thinking "so you CAN die from boredom". If you like soc or if you want this to be your major-he will kill it for you. Though he is nice about grading(do the ex. credit and you can bring up your grade by a whole letter)but the tests are VERY hard. The text book is awfull and you HAVE to read it for the exam.
worst sociology prof in the history of higher educatiion. everything about him makes you want to stab yourself in the ear with a freshly sharpened pencil. i'm now a cj major and this was my first class in the soc dept. lester joseph's cj law class was zamoff's saving grace. fire the pretentious ****. you will learn absolutely nothing.
Real nice guy, lectures are rather boring, mostly because sociology isn't the most fun thing on earth. 3 tests a semester, no midterm or final. extra credit can boost you a whole letter grade! If you need help, go to office hours - he'll get you on track. Its easy to get behind because he doesn't assign HW, but you need to keep up or you're screwed
I loved this class! Zamoff is easy (although you do need to read the textbook because it'll be on the tests, even if he doesn't mention it in class) and interesting, even at 8am. Zamoff is a genuine teacher who takes his students seriously, at office hours, in class discussion, etc. SOCIOLOGY IS INTERESTING, I PROMISE.
great teacher, great class. he gives the most amazing extra credit opportunity that even if you dont do well on the tests, extra credit will boost your grade, its def worth doing! the material is interesting, go to class take good notes, read the textbook and handout for the tests and everything should go well.
So Boring. Attendance is required, only 3 absences, so you have to go. DO the EXTRA CREDIT, i didnt but it will save you since the tests suck. There is no work besides the 3 exams, no final, but you will be bored to tears during lectures.
Zamoff is a nice guy. He is very clear and tells you what he expects of you . There are 3 tests, each worth 33%. Extra Credit assignments are optional, but if you go to all 3 your grade can go from a B to an A. The class isn't hard, and he's really a nice guy; go to the guest lectures also because his twin talks just like him and it's comedy.
This class was pure common sense and it was boring! And attendance was mandatory! I mean, I would recommend the class to fulfil GCR's but expect boredom! The exams often have stuff you never went over! You could study your butt off and there will be things on the test that you have never heard of before or the answers can be ambiguous.
the class was really interesting & he's a good prof. unfortunately he has a monotone voice that makes u want to fall asleep. the tests were kind of hard b/c they included info from the textbook, which he never mentioned in class. the was a great extra credit opportunity which really helped. & there was no final!- only 3 exams.
The tests are pretty horrible and you have to go to every class and you can't be late. He's unbelievably boring. The only good part of his class is that there's no final.
He is pretty boring, so do NOT take his 8 oclock class, its torture especially becuase attendance is mandatory and your penalized if you come late. However if you read the text and take somewhat decent notes during class the tests are easy. He gives up to 3 pts of xtra credit and the assignment isnt that bad so its worth it.
An easy class overall. Must read and go to lectures which are boring but doable. Extra credit helps our a lot. Very nice guy.
Really good. Gives a TON of extra credit. Lectures and very interesting. Test's are not easy but they aren't hard either. I ended up with a B+ even after getting a 64 on my first test. NO FINAL.
This class was horrible to take at 8 in the morning! He is the most boring professor I've ever had. I didn't do well on the tests because they were incredibly hard, but he offers extra credit that is pretty easy and brought my grade up a lot.
DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES TAKE HIS CLASS! His lectures are so boring. Studying for the tests is so hard because it is very hard to distinguish which information he will test you on. The 8am class is mandatory too, or else your grade gets penalized. Worst tests administered ever! Had to do 3 extra credit assignments to get a B!
i found professor zamoff to be extremely interesting. he definitely knows what he's talking about, got me interested in sociology. the tests arent bad either, as long as you put in time to study for them. the only thing i didnt like was that he uses a book that has nothing to do with what he talks about in class, and the text is extremely boring.
Mixed feelings. Lectures were awful...he is very boring. The class did not reflect sociology knowledge so much as 'what a sociologist does and why it exists'...not much information was learned. You can do pretty awful on the exams (3...and most people do badly too) but extra credit helps. DO ALL EXTRA CREDIT and you can get a B. I would not rec
The lectures were somewhat dry but you can tell that he really cares about sociology. He gives a lot of extra credit. His tests are hard if you don't come to lecture or do the reading he assigns. It's not too much work. He is also willing to help people who want to continue their studies in sociology. I would recommend this class.
Dr.Zamoff is a great prof. His exams are intense but managable. Participate in all of the extra credit assignments this will help you out alot. Take plenty of notes. He also keeps an attendance record, 3 strikes and you are penalized. I reccomend this class if you are serious about sociology.
Professor Zamoff is extremely knowledgable- he can teach an entire lecture without looking at his notes once. YOU can tell he really enjoys what he teaches. He offers a lot of extra credit (brought me up from a B- to an A- for my final grade). Lectures can be somewhat boring and are mandatory, but the majority of test material comes from class.
you must go to every class and attend every extra credit to do well in his class. Make sure you do all the readings and understand the graphs on the handouts. His tests are really hard, but TRUST ME YOU CAN GET 60'S IN THE CLASS AND GET A B!!!!
Zamoff is the man. I dont get why people say the tests are hard. Lemme tell you my story, there are 40mc and 1 essay on each of the 3 tests...most is from class some from the book. i didnt take notes, missed 3 classes, read the chapters the night before the test and got an 86. he really knows his stuff and gives massive xtra cred thats easy to get!
He is a really good guy and cares about what he teaches. He gives a LOT of extra credit so you can do poorly on the test and still get a decent grade. Some people thought he was boring but he's not too hard or scary so i liked the class.
I got a B in his class despite getting a 68 and a 74 on two of his three tests. DO THE EXTRA CREDIT. it is a full letter grade so why not?
I have taken Dr. Zamoff for both Soc 001 and his Jackie Robinson class and I loved both of the classes. The classes are not hard if you put a decent amount of work into them. In the JR class, your only grades are class participation, a big group paper, and a take-home final. The reading is at your own pace. I would recommend this class to everyone
Gives enough extra credit to raise your average by a whole letter grade! (I went from a B to an A by going to three extra credit lectures and writing a short paper.) Study your notes from class and read the textbook and the handouts...he tests on minor details.
This dude is riduculous! He just goes on and on in class about total nonsense. I would never have gone if he didn't take attendance. His lecture material is sooooo boring and he likes to hear himself talk. Overall boring as hell but an easy B with little to no effort
OK anyone who has something bad to say obviously is not doing well in the class. I LOVE HIM! So nice, willing to help, dry sense of humor, and I love his NY accent- tests are kinda hard, but the class itself is easy and if you do extra credit you'll be fine
Zamoff will make you wonder what sociology actually is because you never know through what he talks about. He lectures about irrelevant material and you will have to take very detailed notes to pass the exams. You will dread coming to his class especially if its at 8 am. Attendance is mandatory and the textbook is unrelated to his lectures.
I had Prof. Zamoff for Intro to Sociology which I was really looking forward to when I signed up for his class. After taking it I don't know if I want to take another sociology class. He was extremely boring and self-involved. I would not recommend him for anyone interested in Sociology
Don't take, the man's voice lulls you to sleep, seems easy but gets harder, mandatory class, worthless lectures
Professor Zamoff is highly knowledgeable when it comes to the field of Sociology, and it shows in his lectures. The tests aren't terrible if you study adequately, and he offers a decent amount of extra credit throughout the semester. Overall, he does a pretty good job with teaching Intro to Sociology. Recommended.
I love Zamoff! I worked hard, but didn't kill myself and got an A. He really tries to be helpful, always answers emails, and tries to get to know his students (even in the huge class). He is very sweet and smart. Yeah, you have to go to class- god forbid.. not really sure what youre paying for if you dont want to go to class.
Definitely attend the extra credit opportunities, they greatly help your grade at the end of the course. While I found Professor Zamoff quite arrogant and rude at times, it was still a good class to take and filled a requirement. The textbook used was a pain to read, but to do well in exams, it is necessary.
Nice guy, but lectures tend to get a little long winded and side tracked. Not a hard class, but exams cover a lot of material, and all materials must be studied to prepare. Attend the extra credit assigments! the tests will be tough but the EC makes up for it easily. Good guy, just a tough class at 8 am
Professor Zamoff is extremely knowledgeable in the field of Sociology and is very helpful when it comes to a student that needs assistance in any way. He is approachable, and makes very clear how to do well in his class. A very interesting class, although if you are a person who cannot pay attention in an 8 am class, don't take this one!
Very knowledgeable about sports/sociology, and it comes across in his lectures; also likes videos and guest speakers. Assignments are straightforward - an interview and article writeups, along with 2 tests. Tests are comprehensive and you really have to study, but they are not impossible. Any sports fan would get something out of the class.
Really an Awesome guy that is very interested in Jackie Robinson. He is well versed in so many parts of this class and his lectures are very interesting. Almost half of each class was spent watching an espn documentary or other video. 2 exams, one paper, and participation are each worth 25% of your grade with opportunities for 1/2 grade e.c.
DO NOT take his 8 am class Monday Wednesday. Tests were unclear and hard. even though he gives a lot of extra credit, it wasn't enough.
His policies are ridiculous. He is the most unclear speaker and his lectures are unbearable. He is one of the worst professors I've ever taken.
Just awful. Long, droning lectures, unclear speaking tone and little to no organization. Attendance doesn't get a positive grade- he just docks from your final grade if you miss too much. Worst part of his class is that he uses no outlines or powerpoints to clearly map out his lectures, so notetaking is hell.
I was definitely disappointed with this class. The class is rough at 8 a.m. on a monday morning, and the lectures are hard to follow. Zamoff lectures without any kind of visual aide, and they are long, dull, and at times off topic. The textbook is boring as well, and is difficult to connect to class material. Test are hard, so do the EC if you can.
Course was interesting though I took it first semester as a freshmen and I had some trouble adjusting at the beginning, though it DOES get better. Just take good notes during class and read the book (really boring) and you should do fine. Lectures were interesting but I was always so tired I would knock out sometimes. Th extra credit helped a lot.
His lectures seemed more like rants and a chance for him to hear himself speak. There were no powerpoints, he's not on Blackboard, and the textbook is dry and doesn't relate to class material. 70% of the time I caught myself thinking how what he said even related to sociology. You just write down what you think may be important & hope for thebest
His lectures are hard to follow. He often goes off on tangents. The lack of Blackboard and Powerpoints make it a difficult class to follow. He can be funny occasionally, but is often arrogant. The readings do not relate to lectures at all, but are on tests. His grading curve means you never know what you have in the class.
Grades the tests tough but there is a big curve at the end of the class. I got a 70 on one test and low B's on the other two and ended up with an A in the class. Go to class and pay attention and do the extra credit. I didn't even own the textbook and I was fine (i just bought the packet of handouts). Took cause it was required but learned a lot
I have never worked so hard, learned so little, and been so frustrated as when I took Zamoff's class. For an introductory Sociology course the grading is indefensibly harsh and tests are on the most irrelevant minutia. I worked my self to death just to pull off a B plus. Zamoff is the only prof that I go out of my way to tell people not to take.
Boring lectures but you HAVE to take notes that are on the board and important things he says. Theres a big thick handout and a borrrrrrrring textbook you have to read for all 3 exams. No final. Really boring reading and need to stay awake in class to take good notes.
Zamoff is a super nice guy and extraordinarily passionate about sociology and sports. However, lectures are WAY too redundant and you discuss the same topics every class using the same examples. Two non-cumulative exams that are based 90% on questions from the reading and 1 paper. Huge extra credit opportunities too.
Professor Zamoff is an amazing teacher. There are only three tests throughout the year, but he gives an amazing extra credit project. In that extra credit project, you can bump your grade up by a whole letter grade. He is very smart, loves the material he teaches and knows it inside and out. You will have to work, but the class is what you make it
Professor Zamoff is quite a character. His background and passion make him a great lecturer. I really enjoyed his engaging discussions that he keeps relevant with today's events. Tests aren't crazy as long as you do the readings. He's a rather fair grader. Take this class or any class with Professor Zamoff.
Professor Zamoff is very passionate about what he teaches. You need to attend lecture and take notes because he does not use powerpoint or upload anything from lecture online. He does not use blackboard. If you go to class, read the textbook, and do the extra credit you will not have a hard time getting a good grade.
Very passionate about Jackie Robinson. Beautiful course. Highly recommend.
As a non-native speaker, the course is difficult. There is no power point, no black board content, there is a book which is off the topic but it will appear the test in many random questions. We do have extra credit but rarely helped to me. Great teacher, but just too hard. Do not take the course if you want a high gpa.
definitely tough grader, he thinks the average grade should be B. the average for my class this time is about C. do not take it.
Professor Zamoff is very passionate about Jackie Robinson. This course involves a decent amount of reading. Pay attention to the lectures and contact Professor Zamoff outside of class with questions to boost your participation and you should do fine.
It's an easy A if you do at least 2 of the extra credits, take good notes in class, read and take notes on the book and packet of hand outs, and go to class. Extremely boring, and questions on exams were oddly specific. I don't think the book or packet of handouts contributed to my sociological knowledge.
Very interesting lectures and very passionate and caring man. Although, I did find the exams to be more difficult than expected. The final was difficult and ended up bringing my grade down significantly. He does offer extra credit though so you should definitely do it all in case you don't do well on the final!
Love his lectures!
If you take this class, do the extra credit. He gives little guidance on what will be on exams, reading materials seem random and unrelated to course content. Professor Zamoff is a kind and passionate sociologist who I respect greatly. If you are looking for an easy A elective this is not it. Also, the class relies on the sociology of sports, ew.
Professor Zamoff's tests are lecture heavy, so make sure to show up. He assigns many readings to do whenever, just before the next test. I like to be on top of things, but do them all right before. He asks super specific questions on them, like statistics. So it's best to have them fresh in your head. He gives many extra credit opportunities!
One of my favorite professors here. Class attendance is taken for credit and you HAVE to read the textbook, but his tests are straight forward and simple. He is very knowledgable on the subject and his lectures are interesting, really a nice guy. As long as you take notes in class you can pass with at least a B. He offers extra credit as well.
Zamoff is a kind and passionate man that loves Jackie Robinson, cares about injustice, and wants his students to truly learn and invest in the material. Pay attention in class and you will learn a lot, though that does not easily translate to an A. Test questions (the entirety of your grade) are very specific and hard to prepare for.
