Good class to take on the Web. He requires participation in class discussions every week. Good instructor and very helpful. Recommend taking his class
He is not organized in his online class.
He expects a LOT! You have to be good at looking deep into the text!
expects a lot of work throughout the course. tests are cake because he gives a review before each one, truely impossible to make anything less than a B on tests or the class.
VERY EASY! Took him for wintermester and it was totally worth it. The review he gives are exactly the same information as the tests, so just study thoes and you'll make an A. He tries to make things interesting. Highly recommend!
I took his online humanities class. He is organized with the course content, but he doesn't respond that quickly to emails. The work is sometimes hard but mostly time consuming. You have to work hard to make a good grade.I think that he grades tough. I would recommend him.
If you don't like homework, dont take this class. he grades pretty easy (on a 300 word essay, I only wrote 100 words and got a 30/35) but the lectures are mind-numbing. Also, you can tell he tries to be a friend, but it comes off as kind of creepy. He knows alot about his subject though, so I will give him credit for that.
He's a really nice professor and he's enthusiastic about the subject but his classes are really boring. There is a ton of homework but other then it being time consuming it's really easy and the exams are cake. But if you're taking 4 other classes I wouldn't recommend this teacher because it's hard to keep up with everything and your other classes.
Not very clear at what he expects from students, very picky grader and not organized.
I took this class online & it was very easy. Just weekly essays, a couple of projects and very little reading. As long as you go by his instructions, which are simple to follow, it will be the easiest A you will ever get. He is a very good teacher and is easy to communicate with. I highly recommend him and his online class!! A++++++++++++++
I have to admit I was absolutely afraid of this course at the beginning. By the end I have learned so much. He is a great guy and has a passion for humanities. Take good notes and show up to class and you will be fine. Take good notes and show up to class and put forth more effort than expected and you can make an A. Great southern professor!
Is an ok professor overall, but it's hard to keep up in this class. I started this semester with 16 hours and ended up deciding to drop this class because there was 2-4 things due a week. A lot of stuff on top of everything else a normal working student has to do. Definitely would take this class if you have the extra time and enjoy Humanities!
Very Picky, Cares little about how much time you have. Gives out plenty of work, lots of quizes and tests. Everything is timed and you have very little of it. Projects are long and boring. Extremely hard grader and stuck up about his class. Worst Professor I have ever had!!!
Took his online course. Pretty interesting projects, but very time-consuming. Takes professor quite a while to post grades.
In my opinion, he was an EASY professor. Had to write a couple of papers, but most of it was your choice of topic. His tests are straight from notes & lectures (not hard at all). Just study what he tells you to study & you'll do fine. NICE PROFESSOR. Organized. & Pretty easy, in my opinion.
Took the HUMA 1301 web course. It was an enlightening experience. I highly recommend this professor.
Not clear in his lectures, extremely boring in class. Lots of homework, lots of projects, no quizzes. It's an easy course, he's just not very good at lecturing. I reccomend this class to anyone who has free time and likes to read the text book.
I felt like he could have made the class fun....but didn't
His Lectures do not typically have anything to do with what is on the tests. Has a lot of interesting things to say, but rambles on and wastes time. LOTS of homework, very time consuming class. Not a bad class, but make sure you have PLENTY of time to do projects, etc.
Boring (rambles a LOT), but I hate to say it because he is a REALLY nice guy, if not (occasionally) a bit stuck up about his subject. I liked him a lot. The class is not hard at all; tests come straight from reviews, weekly chapter questions are irritating but simple, projects are very open-ended. It can be time consuming, but the work is never har
he does not explain exactly what he wants but he then nails you for not doing it. There is a ton of 'busy' work that is useless in relation to the tests, his projects are fun but he is a tough grader.you MUST have the book. The chapter revies are annoying. Time consuming class, but nice guy. Despite the fact that he nvr returns emails.
I thought he was an amazing teacher. He wanted you to do the work and put in the effort but he made humanities as interesting as possible. I really liked him. you do need your book and you do need to come to class. he gives a study sheet for the exams and if you actually study it you'll do fine. he also grades on a curve...over all great professor
Fairly easy class as long as you study the exam review. (you have to look up the answers yourself) Very knowledgeable and keeps things entertaining. 3 exams, 3 topic responses (about one page), and a easy creative project. The key to the class is the Exam review, do it and your Golden. Oh, he also grades on a curve!
There is a lot of work, I took it online and probably wont pass because he takes off A LOT of points for late work. The tests are usually difficult, the info is hard to find in the book. There are weekly discussions which are pretty easy. There are also two projects, time consuming but not extremely hard. Tough grader. Nice guy though.
I took his Intro to Humanities online. Online classes with deadlines and attendance defeats the purpose of online. This guy is a serious blowhard. It's humanities for goodness sakes..you're not going to find the cure for cancer in this crap of a forced class. He's a stuck up, condescending guy with this class.
I had Professor Derouen in the fall thought he was a good teacher. Very interesting class. Sometimes rambles a little, but I really learned a lot. A few small, easy papers, a couple of projects (give yourself some time), and unit questions. Unit questions are a pretty big help for the tests. Read the chapters!!!! Overall good teacher
He's a decent professor it's hard to have the energy to maintain focus becasue of the material and they way he presents it but all in all the work isn't really all that hard as long as you commit to going to class and doing his topic/project/questions if you got to take HUMA take this one.
REALLY nice guy, very enthusiastic about his subject... but incredibly boring as a teacher. I had a really hard time ever going to class and when I did I had a really hard time staying awake. His tests are straight from the review and he grades on a decent curve. The only thing "hard" about this class is how many points he takes off for late work.
Expects you to do the reading and keep up with the work, but not that hard to get the grade you want if you do those thiings.
Didn't have much trouble getting a good grade... just have to keep up with the assignments.
Took this class online, it is a little challenging because he is a hard grader. If you don't do it how he wants it, then there is a ton of points being deducted. He is nice, and gets back with you in a decent amount of time. Not a lot of assignments, there's 2 projects. Just make sure you do all your work EXACTLY how it says or you wont pass.
Lots of work. LOTS OF WORK. Easy to get an A in the class if you put forth the effort. He is helpful but only if you go ask him questions if you wait for him to help you it's not going to happen. Gives study guides for each test with exactly what you need to know. I wouldn't take the class if you don't want to do the work, but it's entertaining.
He has a pretty relaxed personality, and gives tons of options for extra credit. But if your work is late or you miss a class the point deduction is harsh. There's one major project and essay that you really have to invest time in. If you sit up front and takes notes you'll do fine.
A couple of assignments are challenging, but most of the work is just a matter of spending the time to get it completed. Like most college classes, you'll get out of it what you put into it. He's very good at responding to questions or making time to meet. The information can be complex (true college level), but he finds ways to make it relevant.
Professor Derouen loves the subject and makes class interesting and enjoyable! His tests are a bit challenging, but if you study, you will do fine. There are two assignments-- one is a creative project and one is a critical project; both are fairly easy if you show up to class and pay attention to lecture.
Interesting class. Several smaller assignments and two large assignments, but all pretty doable if you give yourself enough time. Checks roll every class, but builds in room for some absences; extra credit for regular attendance. Always made the effort to answer my questions as thoroughly as possible.
Not hard if you follow directions and do the work assigned (some takes more time than others, but all doable). Good about responding to questions.
I enjoyed the class very much. He is very knowledgeable and passionate about the subject. He is a hard grader, but you don't get things for free. He is generous and curves the grades which helps.
Pretty straight forward. I felt like I always knew what I needed to do (not that I always did it, but that's a different issue). Instructions and examples were clear.
At the beginning of this class, I was excited to have a teacher who was organized. WRONG. All he does is copy and paste. Is very picky about discussions. States what he wants, but doesn't seem to follow those guidelines and knocks points down freely. I will never, ever take an online class after this. Expects students have plethora of free time.
I'm currently taking his class, and this is my FIRST online class ever. He makes the class very easy and it's clear what needs to be done and when it needs to be done by. I HIGHLY recommend him and I'm very surprised to see any bad ratings at all.
Well... The tests are easy because he gives you the best study guides, but you have to "topic responses" and this "critical essay" which are awful. And his lectures are just extraordinarily boring, most of the students can not take it so they leave. He is a great man, and the class is pretty easy if you do all the work.
I put in about 3 hours a week outside of class (not every week, but on average) and did fine. Some assignments pretty easy, some not so easy. Overall, the material and most of the assignments were interesting. (I said "mandatory" on attendance, but that's not quite true. He checks attendance, but you can miss several classes before losing points.)
Very difficult and not helpful. He gives "mandatory extra credit" which can only help the top part of the class. He's VERY boring--I haven't fallen asleep in class since middle school but I fell asleep in his. If you ask a question, he'll just repeat himself, not clarifying anything. Would not recommend.
Not into the subject? he won't give a good grade. Lectures are boring he rambles a lot over the same stuff. Could never stay awake. The tests are easy because of unit questions. Assigns a creative project & critical essay. Must write them how he wants them to be written. Overall, hard grader. God forbid you miss his class! Would not recommend.
Go to class every day and you will pass. He has a quiz for each unit online that you can take multiple times. Has unit questions that are the questions on the test. Only a few assignments outside of class, pretty easy to do them. Overall easy class to take, just pretty boring.
Online class: guys please don't take Humanity with this teacher he is a tough grader teacher I have never seen teacher like him. If you want to get C or D definitely I recommend to take him,
One of my least favorable professors. He canceled class majority of the semester, and during the boring lectures he would get so off topic that it was a waste of the class. Gives pop quizzes every so often to see if anyone did the reading he assigned. On top of all that he assigns long essays and doesn't give very much time to do them.
Not sure what the rater before me was talking about. NO pop quizzes in this professor's class, and never knew him to cancel class. Actually, I don't recognize much of what several other raters have said. The class is pretty easy to get a decent grade (and 'textbook' is FREE). Do you need to a work little for it? Yeah, but, you know... college.
Requirements for course were clear and pretty straightforward. Don't have to buy a textbook; he provides course materials online for free. Found the course interesting most of the time (only courses in my major interest me ALL of the time). Getting a decent grade takes regular work, but not that hard. Always answered questions to my satisfaction.
Took his online class this summer. Enjoyed the discussions with classmates. Pretty interesting course. One of the most organized class I've taken, either online or in the classroom; always knew exactly what I needed to do. I'd take another class with him.
No complaints. Found the class straightforward and frequently interesting.
Do not take. He is so boring. Humanities really shouldn't be as hard as he makes it out to be. Also, a very tough grader.
AWFUL LECTURER BEWARE (talks slow) But extremely easy grader and really nice, smart man. No need to get a textbook he has everything on blackboard that you'll possibly need. Tests/quizzes are so easy if you just do the study guide and look over it. Does give pop quizzes.
Great teacher. All tests are very easy as long as you take the online quiz a couple times. If you can make hundreds on online quizzes then the test are a breeze. Lectures are long but interesting. Some group work in class, was not hard at all. Don't need textbook because he gives links on blackboard to what you need to read.
Liked the class. Learned more than I expected. Prof gives you everything you need to succeed. Lot of in-class discussion. Written assignments are kind of challenging, but if you go to class, you'll understand what to do on the assignments. All the material is online, so no textbook to buy.
Good class. Made me think more than most classes I've taken. Assignments were manageable; prof checks with class often to see if there are any questions about them. Missed a deadline (my own fault) and was still able to pull an A (just barely) using extra credit. No book to buy.
he is awesome! the lectures are very straight forward and there wasnt a lot of homework. he lets you take the quizzes online so you can easily get an A. there are a couple projects, but they are open ended and simple. The tests are easy if you study the powerpoints and online quizzes. there are also in class quizzes that require outside reading.
Not much to say. Class was pretty cool. Manage your time and you'll be okay.
Good class, if you're looking for a "stretch your mind" type of class. Very clear on requirements, assignments and due dates. All the info you need to do well is available. You'll have to write a little, but classroom discussions prepare you for those.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS/PROFESSOR! He if BORING, Talks and is very dramatic during his lectures, which makes him even more boring. He never stops talking and goes of topic with random movies and examples. Save yourself money and time and DO NOT TAKE HIS class. On top of everything else he is a tough grader.
I thought he was a pretty decent professor. He can talk a little too much and be wordy at times but overall he was a solid professor and responded to emails and concerns in a timely manner. I took him as a hybrid class, and although humanities was boring to me, he seems passionate. If you read the unit material, you'll pass. I'd recommend him.
Loved this class, learned so much. No textbook , all material is digital within the course. Expectations are clear. Heavy on discussions, 2 major projects, can repeat quizzes for study and improve grade. Exams are straightforward. Extra credit available.
This class was one of my toughest classes of the semester. If you take this professor be sure to do his hybrid course (online and in class) I found that a lot of the way he organized things were made more difficult than they needed to be. I am still confused as to what this class was all about. Tough grader, confusing class.
Best class I've had. A couple of written assignments are a challenge, but no more than most other courses of this type (english, history, govt, etc). Professor pushed me to consider questions I hadn't thought of before, and that I'll continue to think about in the future. If you're in college to really learn something... yeah, this will do it.
Great professor. Gives you all the tools you need to be successful. Take his advice and there is no reason you shouldn't get an A.
Professor gives clear instructions on how to pass this class. Study the materials provided, participate in online discussions and be punctual with your work, you'll do great.
This professor gives youth exact tools you need in order to pass, all you have to do is bring in common sense and an open mind. He is a tough grader, but that's only because he wants you to apply yourself the best of your abilities. If you're a slacker, do not take this course. He does not play around.
Gives quizzes before he goes over material. Stays on one thing the whole class period.
As long as you show up to most of the time and show up for tests and quizzes you will get a very high grade. Don't let the two essays scare you as long as you try he grades easy. This was definitely the easiest teacher I've ever had. He just wants you to try then he'll help you succeed.
Wasn't that interested going into the class, but I learned a lot more than I expected. The info you need to do well is all provided. Exams are not a problem if you prep well, and he gives you what you need to do that. For major assignments, he shows you in class exactly what you need to do.
It was good. Not my easiest class, not my hardest. Subject was interesting (most of the time) and prof gave different ways of thinking about it. Liked the class.
Great teacher - somehow truly cares about entry level humanities course content, which is helpful.
There is so much extra credit in this class is was able to finish with a grade over 100% there is a lot of mini pop quizzes but they don't carry much weight. There is also a few tests, quizzes, group projects, and papers. Sometimes felt like a music/art appreciation course. Should be easy to pass if you try. He has his own 'book' of online material
Good class. great prof. no complaints. pulled an A (barely) at very end of semester.
He makes class very interesting because you can tell that he really enjoys what he does. Definitely one of my favorite classes at Collin.
I did all of the discussions and assignments on time and with a great amount of effort and I somehow failed the discussion and a major project.
I took the online class. Informative and interesting, but you must be active regularly (every week) if you want to do well.
Professor DeRouen is one of the best professors I've had. I took this course online, and he provided extensive study guides and material that will guarantee you an A in this class as well as gets back to students within a reasonable time. As long as you do the work and follow the grading criteria, he's an easy, nice and fair professor.
Prof. Rich Derouen is rather not present, compared to other teachers. Very obtuse outlines and expectations.
Does not have clear grading criteria. He'll vaguely instruct you on what to do, then when you follow these instructions it's somehow majorly off or incorrect. Class isn't super difficult but the prof couldn't care less about helping. His feedback is harsh and unhelpful. Doesn't give any real advice on how to improve. A few LONG papers.
Very passionate about topic but course was very lecture heavy. I took the tuesday/thursday class and there were quizzes every tuesday but as long as you do the readings they are easy. He provides everything you need for exams and assignments and makes the class very easy to pass
There is A LOT of information he provides. A LOT. Simply try on the assignments and you will pass. But the discussions are way too much. A LOT of reading. A LOTTTTT.
Prof. DeRouen Honestly is a great profesor, very knowledgeable on the topic, clear grading matorral, and is able to respond to any question you have on the course. Extra credit was presented at least 5 times but I dont understand why its needed because all exams were based off the review. Do the review and give an honest effort and youll befine
He's easily passionate about his teaching, however he's a hard believer in learning rather than flash memory. You will have to know the concepts but it does make you question the world, like any good class should. Study reviews and do the extra credit easy A. Not a class you can slack off and procrastinate. Grading is clear but fair hard tofail
He waits until the very last day of the semester to put half of your grades in, so you go the whole semester without knowing your grade. Grades harshly on papers and won't give feedback. Showed on multiple occassions he has better things to do than grade or help his students.
Hands down worst professor i've ever had. Waited last minute for grading everything. The assignments are insanely difficult. You would've thought that we all had doctorates in humanities.... Oh wait actually it's an entry-level course. Never gave feedback. Wasn't clear about grading. Seriously the worst professor.
Grading was never really all that clear, but he was super strict. He always seemed to find the littlest things wrong about every assignment even with instructions being vague. Also, never any feedback was a plus! The creative project he treated us as if we were supposed to be professional photographers without any lessons on it.
I can't even begin to describe how hard this class was. Throws huge and really hard to understand projects at you even before teaching you about the topics. The organization of this class is awful. Not everything is on there at the beginning. He will randomly put the assignments on canvas and then delete them when done??? why
Great Professor. Very knowledgeable about the subject and clearly enjoys what he does. It shows in the lectures and makes them more enjoyable + interesting. Not an easy class definitely, theres need to read. The exams are the same as the reviews. The grading is very clear and almost 6 extra credit opportunities which are simple and interesting.
Prof. Derouen is straight forward & specific about expectations. Simply follow the instructions & it's an easy A. He has a strict late work policy but there are many opportunities for extra credit. All the course material is well explained & if you simply read everything & do the reviews, quizzes & exams are super easy. Not content heavy at all.
If you go by the syllabus, it's an easy A. I don't like how he both didn't grade assignments on time and had visibility restrictions to students preventing them from seeing grades... otherwise it's an easy class.
He provides a very engaging class. The assignments were actually fun and his exams are supported by great study tools. Completing the study tools earns extra credit. I recommend attending the lectures, his explanations and engagement help to understand exam content as well.
Enjoyed the class and the professor. Didn't know what to expect going in, but learned a lot of interesting things. Professor is very fair and clear with expectations. Provides all materials and guidelines needed to do well. No textbook to buy, but required reading and videos to watch online. Classmates I know seem to have the same opinion.
I loved his lectures. He is clearly passionate and very knowledgeable about what he teaches. I enjoyed how he explained things and his passion was on full display. His class isn't a walk in the park. You'll need to put effort into the assignments and discussions. Although quite difficult (not impossible), they were very well-explained and creative.
He is a good professor who seems to care about the class and the quality of your work. You will pass if you dedicate 1-2 days a week to submitting quality work to the class. He also gives a lot of extra credit points! It adds up to over 100.
You can tell Professor Derouen is passionate about his teaching, and that's what makes his lectures so much more interesting and easy to follow. Quizzes and exams are based off of his slides in class and reviews are provided, which are very helpful. Kind and caring, but just make sure to stay on top of your work as he does not accept anything late.
tldr: passionate man, not hard class for a freshy like me
He is a lecturer. The atmosphere of his class is quiet and everybody is listening to him lecture. He is thorough in the information he presents and he gives very defined guidance for course work and how everything works. Don't be afraid to ask questions. He's a helpful guy and he is well spoken.
The professor is clearly passionate about the subject matter, making the lectures engaging. While assignments require effort, extra credit opportunities and helpful study tools like Unstuck study can aid in success. An overall enjoyable class.
Professor Derouen is great! His lectures are always interesting because he's so passionate. He is very clear on what to do for all assignments, use the rubric. On a side note, participation in class discussion is apart of a professionalism score for your final grade.
