You can get through if you take good notes. The thing is that you need to be a quick, clear note-taker. His extra credit adds 5% to the total. He's a fair professor. Kenneth Kurz is way cooler though =-D
Rick Murray is an amazing with how well versed in History he is! He is a very interesting speaker. You have to take a tremendous amount of notes in class, the most I have taken to date. He grades very tough on his tests, be prepared to work in his class to get an A.
great professor!!1 took his class during the winter and still got an "a". a little tough but i would seriously recommend hin for the serious history buff like myself!!
Prof. Murray is an excellent speaker keeps you interested even with the most boring sections in American History. Not an easy class by far but if you take good notes. You will enjoy his class.
He's a great teacher and very interesting. I didn't want to take history 11 but after taking it with Mr. Murray, I want to take History 12 with him too. He's great and really nice.
Out of 3 history courses, and 3 different teachers that I have experienced at LAVC he is clearly the best. Keeps you interested somehow. He has earned his good ratings. Will make you work for your grade so if your looking for an easy ride you should look elsewhere. His strenght the depth he has in his subject. Is evident. Not for the lazy thou
Took his class in a shortened semester. Thought he did a great job covering MOUNTAINS of material in the time we had. I like history so I would probably find any Prof. at least acceptable butthis guy is a STRONG recommend!! Only advice-don't take him if your lazy.
Awesome professor. If you take good notes, you don't even need the book for this class. Quizzes and tests were off of his lectures. Really nice guy and open to questions. Very knowledgable. I highly recommend his class. One of the best teachers I ever had.
One of the best teachers I have ever had.Take his class and you will not regret.
Prof. Murray is a great teacher, he can talk nonstop about the subject. His quizzes are take home, his mid-term & final are not easy all essay format, has you define terminology also. Take great notes or you will not make it through, his mid/final follow note format, be on time, he starts on time, never lets out early. He very seldom uses the book.
This is a fast paced (PACE - 8 wks) class, it was fun and informative, thanks to a great teacher. Mr. Murray is full of knowledge on this subject, take great notes and you will have no problems with the final or quizzes. He grades with fairness, I received a "B" and I felt that was deserving grade. Thanks Professor Murray for an enjoyable 8 weeks.
Murray is one of the best History teachers I have ever had. He explains the subject on a level students can relate to, similar to each lecture being a long story. If you take good notes and study according to his study guide, you will have no problems! Very reasonable grader, as well and will listen to valid arguments! BEST HISTORY TEACHER EVER!
Take this class if you are interested in learning. Be on time, take great notes and communicate with him in case of a problem, he will work with you. This is not an easy class but we are not in high school anymore so it's not really supposed to be easy.
I received all A's and B's on my quizzes, a B on my midterm and a C+ on my paper (I turned it in late and my grade was lowered). I studied my butt off for the final essay. My phone rang during class and I was believe I was failed on my essay as a result. I tried to contact him twice and he ignored both emails.
BEST TEACHER!!! the time flew by. this man is soo interesting. he will such u in to his lectures. tests are OK. he tells u exactly what to study. tests are strait out of lecture. he is very interesting and helpful. easy going and fair. dont be late or abbsent. All u have to do is listen n take notes. HIGHLY RECOMENDED
There is hardly any work in the class. Just four quizzes, midterm, final, prep for midterm, map quiz, the out of class essay and chapter summaries. He will talk till the end of class and very knowledgable about US history. Expect to take lots of notes and i do not advise to buy the book, just do the chapter summaries based on lecture notes.
BEST TEACHER AT VALLEY! wow his lectures are very interesting and he is verry helpful. you dont have much HW, all you need to do in his class is take notes and do the chapter reviews. he is verry helpful and clear in what he wants from you. his tests are straight from the lectures. HIGHLY RECOMENDED
BEST TEACHER AT VALLEY! hes tests are all from the lectures, easy tests, he tels u what to study for ahead of time. he is very interesting and helpful, he will answer any questions and is very fair. he knows sooo much about the topic its amazing to hear him speak. =)TAKE HIM.
Not bad. Has a more lineal approach to history rather than philosophical like most professors, but he really knows his stuff. Lectures can be dull, but you will never stump him. Recommended.
One of the best at LAVC! He's very organized and professional. His lectures are very interesting and informative. Highly recommend this professor!
Straigtforward lecturer, explains topics very well and makes learning easy.
He is a great teacher!!! I received a C in his class because i became lazy.... it was one of those semesters.... To pass show up take great notes and study them u do not need the book only 4 the chapter reviews which u do 10 out of 16. its easy to forget those since its on u he tells u ahead of time everything even test prompts... Hes great!!!
I'm not a history major but i enjoyed his class. He was a great professor, however your grade is all in your hands. There's A LOT of memorizing in ths class which no one mentioned. W/in a week we had to know an essay thoroughly (no use of notes) and 34 definitions in a two paragraph format. you'll learn lot.. take him if you can!
this teacher is the best! he is clear about what he wants, his tests r strait from the lectures, no trick questions. he tells u exactly what will b on the test. very helpfull, heart of gold. 4 tests, and a final .PLUSE HE IS HOT!!!!!
He taught History really well. How he remembers facts and occurrences is a genuine mystery. He is too hard on students though, expecting them to be at the same level that he is, knowing the same things that he knows. I wrote every single note down and I got a grade that dropped my great g.p.a way down. Taking this class was a big mistake!
BEST TEACHER AT VALLEY! Knows the material. Prior to his history class i had no interest in the subject, but he explains things so well that you cannot help enjoying the subject. Instead of boring dates and names, his lectures are more like stories which helps the class stay focused. Very knowledgeable man. Class is a challenge but you need to atte
Best Hist Prof EVER! Doesn't just lecture dates and names. He makes History interesting. Don't need the book. Listen to lectures and understand terms that he emphasizes. Easy A if you stay awake, listen, and understand.
Great class. Professor knows his stuff. Have to attend the class - lectures are extremely helpful and interesting.
Very good teacher usually history its just boring but you will enjoy listening to his stories about the United States. take his class
A typical day in class:come in,he lecutres youtake notes, break at 8,continues lecturing. Tests are in class essays, 4 multiple choice quizzes. Knows his material very well, very clear at explaining...you have to be VERY detailed when writting. Not the best, but an overall okay teacher :)
This guy is the best teacher ever. he lectures and u have 2 take good notes. tests are clear and based on lestures. HE IS SEXXXY and interesting. I like his pony tail.
He is a good teacher, knows his material. Taking him for a 3 hour night class was tough, because he lectures the whole time. Must take notes, most of the tests contain his lectures. Nice guy, good teacher, a little boring.
AMAZING & FUN. lectures are very interseting. tests are easy if u take notes.u have 2 take notes. Overall the best teachr ever. minimal HW. MUST TAKE + he is very SEXY
it is so cool how he remembers so much detail about history. wonderful teacher. u will learn soo much. he is very helpful. U must take good notes b/c the tests come strait from the notes. best teacher at Valley. he has cool hair too
OMG the BEST teacher alive. Rick is so interesting. his lectures are fun. his tests are strait from the notes and lectures. he makes History very interesting. he is a must take.BEST HISTORY TEACHER
Prof Murray is an intelegent teacher. he knows exectly what he is talking about and he is very healpful. he will go out of his was to help you succeed. He does not give much HW and his tests are strait forward. Easy A if you take good notes. a great class
the best history tescher ever. he knows how to lecture so that students become interected. the class is all lecture and its an easy A if you show up to all the lectures and take notes. a very nice teacher.
AWESOME DUDE! His class was a blast of information. i learned so much cool stuff about history. he gives very little HMWK. tests are strait forward and he tels what to study for ahead of time. great techer
Murray is a great teacher. Funny, sweet, VERY knowledgable. Makes history interesting. I'm considering taking another History class just so I can be in his class again, no joke, and I'm a BioChem major. It's pretty easy as long as you don't slack off. Tough grader, though.
by far the best teacher. straitforward, interesting lectues,4 easy quizes, little HW, take notes, b there everytime and you will get an easy A. MUST TAKE
Great teacher, lecturer, and extremely nice. You must read the book and take notes.
he's a good storyteller. kind of intimidating at first but you'll warm up to him.
He's the best!! Just read the book, take notes you"ll do well. He is extremely helpful...knows his stuff.
great class, great teacher, if you take good notes you will get an A. hes just amazing.
I was dreading taking this class but this teacher made me want to know more! I didn't have to use the book once, he has more detailed information than the book. He is awesome! If you need to take a History class make sure he teaches it, you will not regret it!!!!
Hard quizzes, midterms and final, even if you study. His lectures are interesting but when you take the test, super hard. He doesnt let u out early. DONT TAKE HIM, boring class.
Tough grader. Don't take him.
Whhooow! Such a great teacher! Super intelligent! Lectures his class without using powerpoints or notes. He knows his stuff (he knew the historical dates by heart!) I dont know how people say that he's a hard grader! Just do whatever he assigned you to do. Make an outline prior to the midterm & final exam so he can check it for you. It helps a lot.
I hate history, but this class was extremely easy since his lectures are extremely detailed and clear. You need to read the material in order to complete a summary of every assigned chapter.. which should solely be based on the textbook and not lectures.
Great professor! Definately loves history. Personally, I could care less about history but he manages to make it interesting! Easy grader as long as you do what you're assigned. All you really have to do is be there during lectures and take good notes. Easy A!!!
Great Class & Very Great Instructor! He really makes the subject easy and gives everyone the opportunity to get an A. Solely, it is up to the student whether they want to carry out the duty of getting an A in History 12. He is not at all a tough grader and makes the subject that even a fifth grader could comprehend. All in all it is an easy A!
His classes are super easy especially if you take him in VCAP. You will actually enjoy coming to class. Thank you Murray for being so kind! Easy A!
AWESOME!!! Love his class, was very interesting, learn a lot. He knows subject well, use Power Point and give good lecture. Very clear explain that he want from the students. You have to take good notes, don?t miss the class, and test most of them from the lecture, book report, mid-term and final.
Best Professor in the world. I loved his class and he makes it so simple to pass. I took a lot of units this semester and was thinking about dropping history and I am glad I did not because Murray made it easy to understand and was really helpful. Easy A! Great Class!
Definitely a caring Professor who wants to see all his students succeed. I took his class in the fall and got an A. However, I had to study his notes which he makes very clear. Great Professor with a great heart.
Easy A, I cannot complain!
Professor Murray is awesome... He is very clear on what he wants and his notes are excellent. However, he is not a push over for a teacher. I got an A but I had to work for it. Basically, his notes are the best thing to study. Don't miss a class, listen and you will learn a lot! You should receive a good grade!
Easily one of the best teachers I've had at LAVC. I wish more professors were like him. History was my least favorite subject, but the way he teaches made things very interesting, he tells great stories. You don't need the book at all, just read the summaries online for the chapter reviews and the tests are straight off lecture.
YOU THINK YOU ARE DOING FINE, AND AT THE END... TOUGH GRADER.
very nice guy, extremely organized and knowledgeable. always dreaded history but he is not at all boring. lectures are very clear and he gives so many interesting makes that actually makes you like history if you didn't already. highly recommended.
Pretty good class. Assignments are kinda busy work, reading/quiz, but it makes it easy to know exactly what the teacher wants and get an A. He's a pretty good prof too, always answered my questions immediately and helpfully, very knowledgable about the subject and was always willing to help out when I didn't understand something :)
Really cool teacher, pretty easy class as long as you attend regularly copy all notes
Great History Professor! He is a fair grader, just read the textbook and quizes will be a breeze, participate on the online posting-timely, take notes, and you'll pass the class. Midterm and Final are fair to easy, if you keep up with the reading, you'll do great! Take him!!!
This guy knows his history. very informative, helpful and grades fairly. There are essays for the midterm, final and chapter reviews but he looks for quality (like how, when and why) and not quantity. Alot of our grade come from the presentation he assigns.
A very knowledge professor.Pop Quiz and Test are EASY if you study. As long as you attend class regularly you will do fine.
Great teacher. History isn't really my subject but his entire lecture is crystal clear and matter of fact. The tests are exactly on what he lectured and what is in the book. I got an A in the class and only read the book for the Chapter Summaries.
took notes, passed the tests and final, went to class, did everything...and he did not pass me. beware.
He is an amazing professor! He explains everything thoroughly and makes class fun. He is not an easy professor and there is alot of work. If you are looking for an easy A, this is not the class for you. He will help you in any way he can so you learn the subject and pass. Attendance is mandatory. Really enjoyed this class!
He is well educated and knows what he is talking about but he has pop quizzes everyday and that is basically how he keeps his attendance. Beware of this because that is what brought my grade down. He is a fair grader and his exams are relatively easy because he puts what you need to know online. Overall a good teacher just make sure you read.
Hated this class. Waaayyyyy too much writing if you are taking it online. TIP: don't question him about your grade or he will start giving you lower scores. I spent weeks preparing for the midterm and got a "B"
Took his online class about a year ago. Overall easy material to do. Just keep up with the reading and do the assignments and you should get an A. Finals and midterms are difficult because he gives the essay topics ahead of time so he expects a very thorough paper and you don't know which one it is going to be on the test.
Great professor. Very clear in what he wants. Tests are easy if you pay attention in class and not cram it in the night before. Makes the class interesting with stories, adds information that complements the book. Helps you out to get an A, sometimes gives open notes quizzes. Loved his class. Would recommend him to anyone.
Pop quiz every time before class which is open notes, and all you have to do it copy the bold words from the chapter and he'll put up one of the words up there, easiest thing. 4 quizes very fair if you take good notes, no need to bother w/ the book. A map quiz on the states, a midterm and take home final. best professor. Murray > Maddox! take him.
You also need to read a book on Fredrick Douglas which is only 100 pages no big deal, and write a 10 page paper on it. Lot of work, but fairly easy if you get it done.
This was the best class I have ever had.Did not open the throughout the semester. You only need to take good notes.Tests are straight from his lecture. You need to be in the class and study. Not a hard class.I studied only the night before the tests and got an A.But I did not miss a single class. The class is super interesting.Strongly recommended.
I just love this professor.Highly recommended. He is easy and crystal clear. His lecture is fabulous.Trust me, take him and you will love him.
Very nice teacher. It is really easy to study in his class.Highly recommend to take a class with his instruction.
He is a great professor. I enjoyed his class. Although, I had to read the textbook, write essays, and attend every class to get some points for pop-quizes, it was not hard class. The professor was very clear in what he wanted. His tests were easy, and his lectures were interesting and helpful.
One of the greatest History professors you'll have. He is definitely knowledgeable in the subject. Tests are multible choice and written definitions. Study guide is given weeks before, giving lots of time to study. Final is the same as tests. Pop quizzes before every class from reading. Take all notes, read texts, write papers and you'll pass.
Took his class online, pretty simple as long as you do what is expected. He grades more on quantity than quality. I dont think he reads what you write, just as long as its a good amount you'll get a good score. Overall I would recommend his class, learned alot. You need the book, answers are all in there and quiz answers are all on yahoo or ask.com
He's a really good professor to have. As long as you take notes and do what's required, then you will do well. He's really clear on what he wants and he's very helpful. Took him FALL 2010. He actually made history very interesting that if I had to take it again I would go with him.
This professor rocks. He is easy and clear. His tests are straight form his lecture.Multiple choice questions.Take his power point slide show notes and google it at home.Don't need to buy a book.It was a pretty easy A for me.Moreover his lecture seems to be story.Highly recommended.Take him have fun and at the end get an easy A.I respect his knwldge
He is one of the best teachers by far! his lectures are clear and intresting, his test are of his powerpoint lectures so their very easy, offers plenty of extracredit, overall his a great professor! definetly recommend!
Great Teacher, very helpful, fascinating material, plenty of extra credit, fair grader, allows make up tests if you miss class, if you are interested in History as a major his is a great professor to study under, he will go out of his way to help you out and to answer any questions. I would certainly take another of his courses.
What a great teacher!! I have a new found love for history and it's because of Mr. Murray. He makes the class very interesting. Must attend everyday because you'll have daily quizzes which are not hard if you actually open your textbook. Extra credit is available & notes are SUPER clear. He is awesome & I would recommend him in a heartbeat!!!
I just had his class and i can say its not an easy class unless ur willing to work hard. I got an A in the class but i worked really hard for it... He is a great professor and very helpful
I really liked this Teacher. Mostly just taking notes. His tests are very clear & easy. I didnt like having to watch the movies cause of essay but you can find movies online. Overall great teacher. And also a vocab quiz every day. only use of book.
A top-notch History teacher! Take plenty of notes (You'll need them), show up every day, read the book and you'll be fine. He uses in-class essays and a take home essay. I enjoyed coming to every lecture. He's also very helpful and knowledgable and willing to talk outside of class. If you get anything less than a B, it's because you didn't try.
Very demanding re: critical thinking.Very fair in grading, course expectations, and extremely helpful. No extra credit, but plenty of time to complete assignments. Timely response to questions and thorough replies. You'll learn a lot. GREAT class! Katie
ONLINE CLASS One of the best teachers at LAVC! Not 2 easy or difficult. Follow all directions for the discussions, do well on the tests, and you will have an A. Tests are not timed only the midterm and final are, but you will know the questions prior to the test day. It was a great class! Highly recommend it!
Excellent professor. Took a hibrid class. Alot of reading and writing. The in class letures are very interesting and informative. Never boring. You need to reall study to pass your final. Essays! If you do the work, you will pass! Got in A and enjoyed the class alot. Take him if you want to really learn about History.
Great Professor! You can tell from day one the passion he has for history. Teaches it in a very entertaining way. I was never bored in his class!!! Best class i took at Valley.
Great Great teacher! if you follow what he asks you to do.. easy A. take notes. come to class review and your golden. hes an incredible teacher
Great Instructor. He believed in me and I didn't give up! I learned more from this class than in any other history class. He knows his material very well. Is always punctual and professional. It is very important to be there everyday so u don't miss any of the lectures. They are all very interesting!
Greatest History Professor I've ever taken. He keeps it interesting, goes above and beyond the text book with information. Provides GREAT NOTES! Just read the chapters, write down definitions, show up to class, take notes, participate and you will pass this class. Mid/Final are essay questions and he hands the questions out ahead of time.
Go to class on time, so you can take the little quizzes. Watch the Videos and take notes and that A is as good and your. Plus is you do mess up he lets you do extra credit.....
He's Great! Knows his subject. Strict on attendance but if you enjoy history you'll love his class. Vocab quizzes every morning (you can use notes) 1 book report, 4 MC chap quizzes. Essay midterm and final (easy if you take good notes). Book is only used for vocab, he covers everything in his lectures so go to class!!
Great professor with clear explanations. Pay attention and take notes, and you will be just fine
I really regretted taking his class.I don't understand why ppl like him! He is easy if you already know history from previous classes cuz there's no hw but man is he BORING! His voice is very monotone and he talks a lot. He is very opinionated. at times tell you his opinions in his long drawn out stories and you cant decipher fact from opinion!
Passionate, dedicated, simplifies material & welcomes office visits. Lots of info & not for lazy students. For an A: do extra credit, record the lectures, take excellent notes, grasp the concept, write your book report/essays early & have Prof. Murray review them. Not easy, but feel better prepared to transfer. Came in intimidated, left empowered.
Great professor. Just take good notes, do the extra credit, and do well on his tests/quizzes, and you'll pass with no problem. Has vocab quizzes at the beginning of every class session, so definitely copy the vocab from the book into your notes. I've always been interested in history, but after this, it's my major! Very inspiring.
Took this class in the summer, super easy. All tests are open notes and midterm essay questions are given prior to midterm. His summer class is easier than his regular full semester classes. Definitely recommend him for a summer class.
One of the best history profs I've ever had. He is very generous when grading essays, he gives the midterm and final essay questions in advance, the MC quizzes are very straight forward, no trick questions. He is very thorough with his explanations and lectures. He really sparked my interest in history.
Basically his lectures are what he quizzes you on, and the quizzes are straight forward. He doesn't try and trick you or anything like that. Give you the possible the midterm/final questions and is willing to look at your outlines. Loves his subject and doesn't hate his students. In fact it seems like he wants to you succeed. I say take him.
very straight forward:read the chapter, show up, take good notes, study for quizzes, complete the book analysis, be as detailed as possible on your midterm and final; you'll get an A. He even offers extra credit. He's fair. lectures are very detailed so pay attention. If one thinks this class his hard, its because their lazy and don't want to study
I am a big reader his little finger has more book knowledge then I do. Highly intelligent he expect you to earn you grade if you wont work in his class don't take if you work you will get a grade equal to your work
His nice prof and knows his stuff, but his give us way too much work to do, there is 4 quizzes 50points each a book to be analyzed the worst part is the mid-term and final he will give u 6 essays for mid and 6 for final 2 to 3pages to write on them his only going to choose 4 out of 6 to write on them and u can't take notes you have to memorize them
very knowledgeable about what he is talking about, and goes into great detail so you can understand what went on
Well, this class it's only for people that's knows history be ready to write 12 essays and memorize them, a book essay 8 pages and 4 tests worst class ever never got C in my entire classes, hated this class it doesn't make no sense to write too many essays and memorize them, this guy needs to understand that we have other classes and jobs.
Easy class if you do your work. The course consists of 4-multiple choice quizzes, a written-response midterm, a five-page paper (it's not as hard as it sounds), and a written response final. Additionally, you will also have a vocab quiz at the beginning of every class meeting but he lets you write out all the vocab terms and use them on the quiz.
Prof Murray has got to be the best professor I have had at Valley so far. Fantastic lectures, kinda long but super interesting. Clear reqs and criteria. Always keeps the class going. Funny and sarcastic. Looks a bit serious but he is a great guy. Would definitely recommend and take again!
I took his online class. very organized professor and everything is crystal clear. you won't get lost in his online class. very helpful and responds emails ASAP. fair grader. just do your assignment on time and never postpone anything. discussion every week. a midterm and a final which is related to discussions. take him, for sure...
He's a great professor as long as you follow his directions and keep up with the due dates. Participate in his discussions and study. There are weekly quizes, but if you study the textbook and his notes there won't be any problem. He's definitely one of my favorite professors.
His class is pretty easy and straight forward . He is pretty entertaining in lecture ,however, he is totally unapproachable after class. My advice is just don't talk to him. Also, He gives a lot of quizzes and you have to be early for them.
Mr Murray gives you what you earn give his class 100% you will get the same when it comes to his grading you
I was super excited to take this class, and Professor Murray did not disappoint. His method of teaching is extremely simple and fair. He does give essays for a book report, midterm and final, but the answers are easy to find in the book and he covers it in lecture. If you love history take his class, and if you don't maybe he will interest you.
I personally loved his online course! Class discussions were interesting. He grades and responds back very quickly. The finalmidterm are easy since they're given ahead of time. You will write an essay the book itself is not boring whatsoever. Quizes every week, easy A. Really enjoyed his class, so I decided to take him again for history 20(online)
This was my first time taking an online course and Prof. Murray made it a very pleasant experience. Prof. Murray is very good at his subject. Take this class and you will learn things you did not know before. I like American history and this class helped me to learn new things that I did not know about the U.S. history. I recommend this class.
Prof Murray was very straightforward and mapped everything out perfectly for you in his online class discussions are easy and his midterm and final are to the point and easy as long as you prepare take his class
Took him for an online class and it was like taking a 5 unit class instead of 3 units. It was tough but if you are a dedicated student then you will pass the class with an A or B.
Prof. Murray has good lectures and is a good teacher. His tests are a bit challenging and so are the papers but that's good. He doesn't give you a grade, you earn it. I haven't received mine yet but it's either and A or B. It's unclear what exactly will be on the tests but taking notes really helps and his 2 major exams have essay questions.
Took his online class! The readings are clear. The discussions require you to read and type a lot. However, those discussions will help you in your Midterm and Finals. It's a path to success, so don't miss them! He gives good quizzes. Hard to memorize all of them. So you have to read the book!
I DEFINITELY RECOMMEND PROF MURRAY! HIS CLASS IS SUPER EASY! IT REALLY IS AN EASY A! DO ALL THE DISCUSSIONS AND QUIZZES AND YOU'LL GET AN A
He explains work clearly and if you have any questions you can email him, he will get back to you right away. You always know where you stand in class, his grading is clear and concise. I learned tons in just one winter semester, I wished I had taken his class for a whole semester. Definitely take him, do your work and you are sure to get an A.
I was SO scared going in because History has always been my worst subject... but I ended up with an A! Now, fair warning, it's an "easy" class so long as you keep up with all the work. The points for the assignments are quickly put in the grade book and you are ALWAYS able know where you stand in the class. Definitely recommended!
I took his History 1 and 11 courses. He gave us good amount of EXC. If you read the book and participate in the discussion every week, you will get an A. Your workload is fairly easy. However, do not miss any discussions! It's the only way you'll get an A! I got an A. He's really friendly, caring and helpful. The best History teacher in LAVC.
If someone were to play this guy in a movie it would be Paul Giamatti. This is easily the most fun you will have in a history class, history enthusiast or not. The class in interesting and the professor is great. Definitely worth taking!
The MOST interesting history class I've EVER taken in my life! Prof. Murray knows history and knows how to tell it, he's aces! Lots of details and cool facts! Though, he hardly ever smiles - I think I've only seen him smile once, very briefly. Professor, smile! - You are amazing! PS this is not an easy A, but if you do the work, it's not hard.
Gives Feedback. Great Professor!
LOVED the class!!! Super interestring - every lecture is like a dive into the past! Prof. Murray knows everything about his subject! At least that's how it seemed to me. He is honest and straightforward, but an amazing instructor! Will recommend to everyone! PS not an easy A, you must work for it, but that's why we go to college, right? )))
I just took prof. murray for history 11. This isn't your easy A History type of class. You have to work for it! the quizes, the mid term and the final are challenging . So make sure you take good notes and study ! Overall he's a great history instructor ! definitely prepares you for the 4 year university level !
He was a good teacher, offers good feedback if you see him in office hours. His quizzes are based off lecture and textbook. If you pay attention and take good notes it shouldnt be a hard class.
Great professor! Even though I missed some assignments and messed up on some I was still able to do the extra credit and pass with a B. He really cares about his students and does all he can to help. You have to get the textbook and participate in all of the discussions. Quizzes also must be submitted on time. Overall loved the class!
Professor Murray is awesome! I took his HIS20 & HIS11 courses. He is extremely clear about his assignments and expectations, do the work on time, participate and you will pass. He communicates & answers questions timely. There are weekly quizzes that aren't timed which I loved. I would definitely recommend him to anyone. Thank you Dr. Murray!
Took him for an online class, it was fine. Didn't expect the amount of work we had done but it was manageable. I think he's a better on campus professor than an online one.
Took him online during the summer, he's clear and concise. If you have any questions or need any help, he responds very quickly and is straight to the point. Very organized, and you will have to work for your grade. Don't procrastinate or else you will regret it. For the online exams make sure to be super-SUPER detailed on your essays.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS IF YOU WORK FULL TIME HIS DISCUSSIONS REQUIRE YOU TO LOG IN 2-3 DIFFERENT TIMES (OR YOU DONT GET CREDIT) ALSO YOU GET HALF CREDIT OF IT'S NOT DONE BY THAT DAY. EXTRA CREDIT IS SEEING PERFORMANCES AND WRITING ABOUT IT WHICH IS UN FAIR SINCE I WORK. DURING THE DAY. GOOD IF YOU ARE A STAY AT HOME MOM OR SOMETHING NOT A BUSY.
Since we were only given the option to chose 3 Tags, I've added a few more. CLEAR GRADING CRITERIA, CARING, EXTRA CREDIT. I took this professor during 2 online classes. He is truly AMAZING. A True Leader, fair, and hands down, 1 of the best online professors I've taken thus far. Responds to emails promptly. A total Gem!
Took his History 1 and History 11 last year. Forgot to give him a feed back. The best professor. Huge 5 star!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Yep. Take him, he's the best history prof in LACCD. About to take 12 with other professor because I love US History!
Professor Murray is a great teacher! Western Civ. is definitely a heavy class because there's so many years you have to learn, but he makes his lectures straightforward and simple to understand. There are 4 quizzes, a paper, the midterm and the final and vocab term quizzes at the beginning of each class. He gives extra credit and is helpful.
Super easy and fun class that actually made me enjoy history! Mr. Murray is very helpful and understanding and was willing to extend deadlines for a bigger project when I had an emergency and couldn't complete it on time. The textbook is very helpful especially in completing the discussions, which are a big paet of your final grade.
Worst class I have ever taken in my life. I took him for History 1 and 11 and that was the worst mistake of my life. All these reviews are lies and the bad ones have gotten deleted. Do not this take class. Literally no one is getting an A. The quizzes are on apples while the material is on oranges. His grading is literally impossible.
This professor is best! He gives extra credits, has clear grading criteria, took his 5 weeks class for Winter and it went very well. In the beginning he tells you to keep up, so if you don't thats probably why you're giving bad review about this prof. Do work ahead of time, do extra credit and you will do fine. I would LOVE to take him again.
He gives tons of extra credit, post what is going to be on the midterm and final exam questions right in the beginning of the semester. 400 words only for each discussion topic. Midterm and Final, he doesn't care how many words you do, he is more concern about the quality not quantity. TAKE HIM, YOU WONT REGRET IT only if you keep up.
took him online and every week we studied one chapter, one quiz and a long discussion. midterm and final are 2 out of 4 essay questions. it is very important to include in the essay everything you know about the subject. as long as you do everything you should get at least a B.
Professor Murray an excellent history professor! A true mentor who cares about his students. Fair as long as you follow his syllabus and instructions. He is prompt in responding to all emails. Positive and motivating! I took two classes of his classes. Highly recommend! A+ professor.
Although his class is easy, he is not a very good professor. Harsh grader, definitely makes you work for an A in his class and takes deadlines very seriously as if his life depended on it. If you have to take him, take him online. I would much rather take a different professor than Rick Murray due to his non-leniency. He will not budge on a grade.
He's amazing! Honestly, the only way you don't pass his class is if you take horrible notes or don't come to class at all. ALL of his quizzes are based on class lecture; which is why you need to take good notes! He has a clear grading criteria, and offers extra credit! The ones who say it's hard to pass, it's because they don't do the work.
I honestly believe Professor Murray has an encyclopedia for a brain, which he can access instantly and on demand, and which he uses to produce amazing lectures for his students. I'm a history major. You can sense Murray has a true love for History. If you go to lecture and pay attention, you'll leave with an A and a greater understanding of history
Took an online class over the Summer, It was only 5 weeks so it moved kind of quickly. He was very clear with his expectations and quick to respond to questions. We were required to to do two 400 discussion a week which seemed like a lot but if you do the reading it really isn't. He is very quick to grade assignments which is nice in a onlineclass
Took his class , honestly i'm scared of rate my professor just because sometimes people say good professor and they aren't so your screwed once you end up with that professor but honestly one of the BEST History teacher very smart and passionate about the subject he knows what hes talking about. Hes caring and sweet. take him you wont regret it !!
I took his class during the last spring semester and I enjoyed this class so much. Professor Murray tells history in a special way; he makes it really interesting. I won't say the class was easy for me, however, I did all my works and I got an A. The midterm and final might be stressful but at the end, you will know history really well.
Professor Murray is a textbook himself. Went to class everyday, and teach me he did. Really fast lectures with tons of info. Be ready to write fast! I could NOT imagine missing one day of class, he covers so much more than is in the book. Doesn't post lectures online. Extra credit opportunities.
Professor Murray has been the best professor, in my opinion, to teach me all about History, have taken this class more than once for different subjects and I have to say, its a learning experience. He will teach everything you need to know so make sure you're ready to learn. Professor is assessable, so talk to him if you have too! Will recommend!
Online CA History was great with Murray. Very straightforward class - discussions and quiz every week, timed essay midterm and final exams, and one paper about the CA Missions. If you put forth effort in your writing, you will get a good score. Offers copious extra credit and is VERY quick to grade assignments - will be taking him again in Spring
You won't regret having class with Prof Murray. He gives you everything you need to know in his lectures with some humor sprinkled into it. Only needed book for the weekly chapter terms . There are 5 quizzes, midterm, a two part final, and a paper on the Frederick Douglass book. If you do everything he asks and study, you will pass his class.
Where to start his lectures are all power points he gives the major points on them and explains in great detail the meaning or significance of each one. Every week you need to get the key terms form the week as every day exactly when class begins he gives you a quiz on one term at random. He is overall a great professor that helps you
strict grading, strict instructions, would not recommend
Ive taken Professor Murray for a year now, both for History 11 and 12. I got an A in both classes, but because I worked for it. His class is easy if you do all the work. You wont pass the class if you dont come. He gives study guides and extra credit. All his quizzes come from the lecture. Hes a walking textbook himself and he makes class fun.
I am so glad that I took Professor Murray's California History class. He is incredibly clear about expectations and the work that is required. The textbook was very well-written (didn't read like a textbook) and was enjoyable to read. He gives you feedback if you ask for it, grades work unbelievably quickly, and is generous with extra credit.
map quiz, weekly vocab (can write it down ahead of time & use it) and 4 MC quizzes. Midterm and final are all written. He gives you prompt questions ahead of time. He wants you to be VERY detailed. For History 12, you read the Jungle by Upton Sinclair & write an essay. Take detailed notes in class. He talks kinda fast. only use textbook for vocab
I took him online and doing all his assignments are mandatory. You need to study and make sure your on top of it. All assignments are based off the book and chapter you are reviewing. He gives you one extra credit chance thats worth a lot of points but if you dont do his assignments then you wont pass.
Talks SO much. It's not as dreadful as I'm making it sound. If you pay attention, it's a little interesting because he's a great storyteller. SUPER harsh at grading though. My friend and I worked on our papers together, he gave her a C and I got a D (keep in mind, I'm a writer). I ended up dropping the class for a W, that's how hard it was.
Great professor with a broad understanding of the material. He brings historical figures and events to life. Pay attention to the slides accompanying the lectures and take lots of notes in classquizzes and exams are based on class lectures. Accessible office hours. Extra credit pays off!
Very straightforward class. Do the weekly discussion and post replies at the end of the week. Quiz questions can be vague and are best done after reading the chapters given. Tests are essays that can be done before test time if you want to answer all the questions otherwise be prepared to write a lot in a short period. extra credit are fun events.
Really amazing professor, def knows what hes talking about and has a passion for it. Very lecture heavy, skip one class and youll be pretty far behind but not impossible to catch up. Seems intimidating but is actually super friendly once you talk to him. A LOT of material so if you dont study you wont pass. Gives a lot of extra credit opps.
Must attend class everyday and on time. He doesn't punsih you but you miss out on easy participation points. Fair grader, just do the assignments and show up and you'll pass. Lectures and tests are very straight forward. Man knows his stuff.
Professor Murray is a nice and helpful teacher if you go to his office hours, however, his quizzes are super tricky. It is almost like he doesnt want you to pass. You dont know what to study because there is SO MUCH information and on the test, hell ask you questions on very specific things. Im a hard worker, but he makes me work 100x harder.
Easy Breezy. TAP Section. Vocab test every morning on the dot of starting time. Just wants you there on time. Allows a cheat sheet. One major paper on Frederick Douglas. On-Demand Midterm and Final, easy A, gives the study guide at the first day of term. Do the extra credit, service learning and visiting a museum.
Vocab quiz on 1 term at very second class time starts, allows cheat sheet. The purpose is for you to be on time. Several documentaries watched, a paper written afterward. On-Demand Essay Midterm and Final. Gives the prompts out the beginning of the term. Accessible office hours and e-mail responsive. Offers extra credit. Easy A.
Overall a really good and nice professor. I was there every day and turned in the chapter term every class. The quizzes werent too bad if you actually paid attention and took notes. Book is online. Midterm 8 page essay was not that hard. Instructions werent very clear though. Did do the extra credit at the Reagan library and it helped. Got a B
Great professor! Took him online and he is very clear in his directions. ALOT of reading as well as videos. . He is a tough grader but always gives feedback so you can learn from it. Many opportunites for extra credit and allowed us to turn in our midterm early for a review, with time to revise it before it was really due! Great professor
To date, Dr. Murray stands as one of the most memorable professors at LAVC. He is the perfect median as far as his expectations are concerned. He is clear, fair, organized, and is readily accessible. Truly enjoyed his teaching curriculum. Dr. Murray is a GEM! I highly recommend.
This class was pretty difficult not gonna lie. Professor Murray is not very clear with deadlines and instructions on what is to be turned in. He definitely makes you work for it and is a tough grader. The tests can also be very tricky
by far the worst professor at lavc! I dont understand the good reviews at all. His tests are all essay questions, he doesn't tell you whats going to be on his quizzes. 8 page term paper. The toughest grader I have ever experienced!!Don't take his class unless you want your gpa ruined.
The class is lecture heavy with a lot of note taking, if you dont take notes you will struggle to study for the tests. He definitely knows the material and is passionate about it. There is a one word vocabulary test right when class starts so that youre on time. He offers extra credit and there is a term paper due at the end of the semester.
One of the best professors! Extra credits are easy to do for an overall total of 80 points. All discussions and tests are easy as long as you read and understand the textbook.
Professor Murray is highly knowledgeable of history. His lectures are extremely fascinating and he's able to speak on any topic you ask of him. He offers a lot of extra credit opportunities that can boost your grade tremendously. He has daily 1 term definition quizzes, 2 exams (he gives questions at the beginning of the semester), and one paper.
This class was harder than initially expected, but it was doable. The worst part of the class was the quizzes, I failed every one. But he gives so much extra credit I still got an A. The Midterm and Final are easier than the quizzes and the Douglass paper is a grade booster if you do it right (very easy read). The textbook is online for free.
There's 4 quizzes, midterm, final, and a paper on Douglass. Graded vocab word every class. Do the extra credit! Some extra credit felt inaccessible if you work or have extra classes. As long as you do at least 1 extra credit, you'll be ok. Quizzes are harder than the midterm & final (write outlines in advance). Take good notes; he talks fast.
My favorite history teacher. If you want to get an A you really have to know what you are doing - any vague statements on the test only harm your grade. But if you are somewhat interested in history you'll absolutely love him. P.S. Be sure you take all extra credit he gives.
He's a good teacher, but he expects way too much. Midterm was more like an essay. You have a major essay due soon after the midterm. I wouldn't recommend him if you have a heavy schedule or if you hate writing. He's a good teacher though and I learned so much from his class. Take him if you're a history major or if you have a light schedule.
Murray THE BEST! If you're not good at history, TAKE HIM. Offers ex. credit opportunities its so much fun. You go to the Ronald Regan Library. There are 3 essay exams each exam has 2 questions & he gives you the questions to the exam weeks before! During his lectures he tells funny facts about important people he is so passionate. You rock Murray.
Professor Murray is the best history teacher. Textbook is online. At first he seems strict but after you get to see him in action you'll see how cool he is. He puts up a vocab word every day for extra points! His lectures seem like a lot because of the extra information he gives but just focus on the big important stuff.
Professor Murray is super understandable and helpful as well. I really enjoyed his online class, even though I never met him in real person I got that caring interaction by him. Hes a great professor!!
If you have to take history enroll in his class. He gives good feedback, lots of extra credit and if you do as the syllabus says you will pass with an easy A. He makes learning history fun and is great on communicating if you ask for help.
If you are taking heavy classes with this class included, I definitely do not recommend. This is a type of class that keeps you glued to your seat all day. Midterm is writing whole essays on questions and so is final exam and on top of that, a paper. Dates are too squished so get ready for all nighters. Stuff needs to be done early for no workload.
He is a caring and understanding professor. I enjoyed him a lot and the workload was not much at all. He provided the textbook which I appreciated and he gave plenty of opportunities for extra credit. The only thing I will say is he is a heavy grader on the midterm and final. He likes you to be EXTREMELY specific which was frustrating.
I have chosen this professor for the summer class based on the high rating. Maybe because of the summer short semester the workload seemed heavy to me. There were almost no lectures, just lot of reading , lot of essays, and the tough grading. No late submissions. Still got an A but, surprisingly, this class took too many efforts for that.
I liked the course overall , but i wish he could give more extra credit , if you do bad on just one quiz you can't make up for it .
Fall 2020 online. He has weekly discussions posts which you need to post and reply to others. Due to this there is some need to have a clear schedule. But as long as you do this he will give you full marks. One downside was the midterm and final. He is a tough grader and does not give a lot of feedback. But he does offer extra credit which is good.
by far the worst professor at lavc! I dont understand the good reviews at all, he probably made 'em himself. His tests are all essay questions, he doesn't tell you whats going to be on his quizzes. 8 page term paper. The toughest grader I have ever experienced!!Don't take his class unless you want your gpa ruined, but if you must take it, oh Lord.
fall 2020 Participate! Also has vocabulary terms right as class began. I slept in on accident and missed two dropped my grade pretty hard. His quizzes are super easy but he doesnt really tell you what to study. Midterm and final are essay questions. Tough grader on those and a paper. Extra cred opportunities. Im a trash student this an easy class
I took this class thinking I would get an A since I have never gotten anything lower than an A in any history class before. I WAS WRONG!!!!!! He makes it extremely difficult to get an A because of how harshly he grades. GO WITH ANOTHER PROF. IF WRITING IS NOT YOUR FORTE.
Prof. Murray gives excellent feedback. There is a lot of reading, but hey! is History. It is important to read and analyze to answer the required discussions and essay questions for the testing. He clearly states what is needed to be completed and by when on the syllabus. He is reachable by email and provides great feedback
I have taken Mr. Murrays His011 class and thought it was a wonderful class lectures were a little long but all recorded so that you for get something you go back to it he tells you what to study and what going to be on test and quizs he prepares you study guides. There was just one assignment that you need to take your time on the Douglas paper.
Professor Murray was amazing! I took this class asynchronously so there were no Zoom meetings. The assignments were clearly labeled in the syllabus and the course was so well organized! Every week, we had assigned readings to do in order to write two discussion posts about one of the prompts he gives you and complete quizzes after each chapter.
Professor Murray can be a tough grader but only because he wants to make sure you get the stuff right, the work isn't too much and the tests aren't too bad; all in all a great professor.
I took Intro to West Civil during quarantine and it was not good. He had us watch long videos in class, but because it was over zoom and the video quality was horrible, I had to watch all 7 hours of videos on my own time. His lectures droned on and were long. I also felt that he was mildly antisemitic after hearing how he talked about Jewish people
