Good hist teacher, hard tests, but the class was great. Enjoys what he does
great history teacher, very interesting. as long as you study the notes that he uses (available on the internet), the exams are very easy.
The BEST adjunct faculty teacher that I've ever had.

Awesome proffesor!Yeah his tests are hard, but his notes and quizes make up for it.
The tests were hard but he covers all the material in class. If you like to sit in a class for over an hour and listen to a teacher ramble and do nothing exciting, take this class.
TAKE HIS INTERNET COURSE and do it OVER THE SUMMER! If you take it in the Fall/Spring, he will assign a 25 page paper. The quizzes are not very easy, but the format of the tests are pretty cool. No, you don't have to read the book.
Rick has a true passion for history. He has visited nearly every historical site that he discusses. He tells interesting stories that really brings the history to life.
Rick Fish is an awesome teacher. He make History interesting, easy to understand and exciting. However, he does not provide study guides and your grade is based on what you get on all your exams. He does have pop quizzes as well.
Had a lot of problems with internet. He showed up once in the begining and then we never heard from him again. Very frustrating. To make up for lack of involvement he let us take exams untimed and open book. Not sure if I learned much.
I loved the way he taught! If I could take more classes from him I would. His tests are all matching. He gives you notes to print out online. As long as you study the notes he gives you, you will get an A. He also gives pop quizzes but they are bonus pts.
I took his online course. THAT WAS A MISTAKE<WARNING>!!! You have 42 quizes and 4 Tests and a Finial! You have to memorize every little Fact! He asks the most stupid questions on quizes and test are all matching and timed! Do not take this class!
AWESOME!! I would take any class from him. He does not have any trick questions on his tests. His lectures are the best. He makes history very enjoyable and easy to learn. Do whatever it takes to take his class.
What a great teacher. You can tell he has a passion for history, and like a great teacher does, he gets his students excited about what their learning too. He knows so much, any question you have, he has an answer. there are a lot of quizzes, but it's college get used to it!
awesome teacher, I have never been interested in history much, but after this class, i would probably take more history from him. His lectures were always fun and he was very fair on all his quizzes and tests.
Lousy teacher. I've always enjoyed history and I've never had a teacher this lousy. His tests cover more than is covered in class. He also tends to get off-topic and stay that way for a period of time. Take anyone but Fish.
Good class. lots of quizes give 10 extra credit quizes. GREAT class if you like lecture classes. No Assinments
Fish has an expansive knowledgeable of history. He's a good teacher. He is very opinionated, cracks politcal jokes (at least one a day about Hilary) , and is a **** republican. His tests and quizzes are VERY detailed. But as long as you read and do outlines of the chapter, you'll do fine.
Rick Fish is an awesome teacher. he has so much passion about everything he teaches. he goes beyond what the book says and knows all the facts and stories you don't hear in school. i loved having him as a teacher. he made a passion in me for history. i would recommend him to anyone
Very Good Teacher. He has alot of quizes and tests but tons of extra credit. He makes it possible for everyone to get an A. He is the best history teacher and thank the good lord he isn't a liberal. Class is fun and intertaining.
Easy. He gives you all the notes for the test so if you study them, the test is easy. Just try not to miss too many quizzes.
Fish is an awesome teacher! If you keep up on the homework, which is reading a chapter each class, and studying the notes he gives you for his tests, you will ace this class. You'll also learn a lot and watch out-you might start liking history!
Awesome teacher. He makes history fun.
History-He is the most opionated, rude uncaring instructor there ever is. He is very judgemental and does not listen at all to his students. He thinks he knows everything. He even judges history books by saying they are all written poorly and not to his satisfaction.STAY AWAY FROM THE FISH!!!!!!!!!!
He was the most awesome history teacher I've ever had!!! He is so funny and makes the class interesting. He can seem inimidating at times, but overall i think he is a great teacher!!! Take his class if you ever get the chance!!
Rick Fish was an AMAZING history teacher. I found myself looking forward to going to class each day. As long as you do the reading, you're sure to get an A.
He sucked at a teacher, you cant make up quizes, he askes bogus questions on the quizzes stuff you dont even read about. He's hard, there is a lot of reading each night. About 10-30pages, depending on the night. He's so boring..dont take his class!!!
Professor Fish is really funny, he has interesting stories and facts that no other history teacher has ever taught me before, if you want to love history and stay awake the whole class period, take fish!
This was a very easy class. Anyone who thought this class was challenging or difficult in anyway doesn't belong in college. His tests are multiple choice and he has 10 extra credit quizzes. Half the class didn't even have to take the final exam because they had enough extra credit to get an A.
Great teacher!!! He really knows what he's talking about. if you go to class and take good notes you'll do good in the class, then if you do the reading you'll ace it! One thing i loved is that he made class so interesting, i had it at 7:00 am and i never fell asleep! I hardly would ever look at my watch and usually was suprised when class ended.
He is actually passionate about what he teaches. He knows his stuff! It was fun to come to class and laugh at his jokes. This was not a boring class.
Fish really made me work hard for my grade - and his tests kicked my trash! (in a good way!) I adored this class and consider it my favorite at UVSC so far. He's got a great sense of humor as well!
This was an internet course. Exams were text based and there was no course work. There was a quiz for each chapter and about 4 exams. Not much personal attention to students but, class didn't require much. Grading is fair.
Awesome teacher. Would tell anyone to take him. Has strong views that he backs up. Loved his dedication. I have gained a great love for history as part of this class.
His class is hella easy. Just go to class and listen to him and take notes on the outlines he provides for you on the internet. Then just study off of those outlines and the little amount of notes you have and the class is cake. If you do that NO BOOK is required he lets you know exactly what to expect. The easiest class I ever took and most fun
Great teacher. He really knows is stuff and explains well. If you are gonna take a history course make sure its from this guy
This guy is awesome. He made me love history. The class wasn't that tough as long as you did the reading. I learned so much from this class. He just made history interesting and fun. I would recommend him to everyone.
Highly recommended
eewww! I hated that class with pasion! eeeewwwwww!
Probably the best teacher at UVSC. Passionate and knowledgeable about all that he teaches. Ask him any question about any time in history and he makes it come alive. I never really liked history before but I learned to love it. TAKE HISTORY FROM FISH!
I didnt care too much for Prof. Fish. He talked more about his childhood than he did about history. He wasn't very reliable He would say something would be ready one day and it usually wasn't ready until a few days later (especially test reviews) If you don't like reading, dont take his class. You have to read every chapter for the quizzes.
Dude, he really wasn't that bad. Prob one of the easiest History teachers.... (I have all my notes still if you need them)But really he wasn't bad. There are 3 tests, he gives you review sheets and all the notes. Tests really aren't that bad, just need to know some people, I actually learned a lot in class. I liked it.
If you take this class, do it online. You read a chapter, you take the quiz to go along with it. Take notes and highlight, the quizzes are open book and often word for word. So easy to get an A if you take the quiz right after you read the chapter!
Online class! Totally easy! Just don't procrastinate this class! I did that and it sucked! But over all it's easy! The Prof I can't really rate because he made the class so easy that you never have to talk to the man.
Rick is the best. Just go to class and do the work and you can't get a bad grade in the class. He's really interested in history and he's well organized. Lectures are very interesting.
Fish is very knowledgable and likeable. This class does require a lot of reading and there are daily quizzes, so you need to keep up. There are extra credit quizzes too. There are 3 tests total and a research paper or site visit papers. I highly reccomend this class from him.
I think Prof. Fish is the best teacher I have ever had. He made me want to take History as my major. Very interesting. A lot of reading. Don't get behind. Test and quizes are great if you do your reading. Highly recommend this teacher. I looked forward to every class and I hate school.
Awesome Teacher!!! He knows how to make History Awesome!!! There is a lot of reading, but if you do the reading, you'll ace the class. Very Knowledgeable and Helpful at any time!
Take this class online!! Fish's love for history really came out in the chapter outlines. I like the way he set it up online with quizzes after each chapter and an optional extra credit final. This class made me want to be a history major. Fish is great about helping when you need it.
Didn't like this teacher at all. Not helpful, very impatient and one of those Professors that thinks everyone in the world cheats. Not trusting.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROF.! He requires way too much reading and his quizzes and tests are near impossible-no one in my class ever got above a B on tests. He is kind of a jerk and can't trust anyone. He sucks-he made me hate history class with a passion.
Very good and interesting. Very easy
This was the easiest history class I've ever taken. He makes you read because it's history...but he tests you on exactly what he tells you he will.
class was easy you read the chapter and took the quiz 10 questions worth 9 points and 1 point extra credit. final is all extra credit
i HATED this class at first quizes everyday 3 weeks left in the sem i had a C he gives so much extra credit and trys to help you pass i am finishing with a A. he wants you to pass. just read a little and show up to class and you will get a easy A!!!
He was too hard and never helped the students when they asked. and tested only on readings
He is a way funny teaching and makes you laugh when he is telling a story and is acting it out all at once. Take this class during the summer, its more reading , for ex... two chapters, but you dont have to do a term paper at all and he does still give extra credit quiz. I do enjoy history more!
On-line class is easy if you just read the book and the chapter reviews. Don't procrastinate and you will breeze through.
I really didn't want to take this class at first, but I had heard good things. I loved it! Even though the reading was hard (and I fell asleep several times while doing it) it paid off. The extra credit at the end helped. He really gets into the stories he tells. He is hilarious! Take it from Fish.
Fish is a good guy, but this class is not just a breeze. Requires a LOT of reading. But he does give a lot of extra credit at the end to help you out. Just don't procrastinate and always read and UNDERSTAND the chapters. There is a quix everyday on them, and sometimes they are hard to pass even if you read.
This gut made me hate my life for the whole semester. He is very interesting, but his teaching style is like Hitler.
Very knowledgable about history and enjoys teaching, his lectures are entertaining. Good teacher to take for your history credit

if you read the book, you'll do well on his quizzes and that's all he grades on. have to be in class to take the quizzes, though...
Probably my favorite professor at UVSC. I took him way back in 2001. Grades were mostly based on quizzes/attendance. Very engageing and knows his stuff.
I really enjoyed his class! You must be there everyday though for the quizes (I went on my honeymoon...hence the C+) I learned a lot, and I really like the way he teaches.
I enjoyed this class, it was easy to enjoy as I love history. Be sure you attend every day, read the chapters in advance for those quizzes. If you do these things, you will do well in his class.
Take this class from him from distance ed if you have the discipline to keep up and not let your work fall behind. All you do is read the book and take a test for every chapter (42 chapters). The final was optional extra credit. I finished a month early and got an A. Why can't more classes be like this one?!
I have taken two classes from him now, History of Utah and Civil War/Reconstruction. I enjoyed both of them and would recommend him to anyone. I got an A+, and as long as you do the reading, come to class, and study you will get an A and you will learn a lot of great stuff about history.
Wow, what a ton of work and to get a bad grade. If you plan on commiting your whole semester to this one class then you might get through. GOOD LUCK!
If you love to read a lot take this class because that is all you do! He has quizes every other class period which dertermine if you read the book. To be honest, I did not enjoy this class.
History was a pretty easy class, and Fish is so funny, you just have to keep up and always be ready for those quizzes. I suggest you print out the chapter summeries on the website Fish gives you. It helps way more then just reading the chapter in the book! Try to get the best you can on quizzes because the end of the term final is impossible!
Good teacher. Is full of interesting stories, and makes it entertaining. Highly recommened it.
You really need to read every chapter, you have to be ready for the million quizzes he gives you. Be prepared for quizzes and thats about it and then the final comes thats freaking hard too. Good luck, he's a funny guy and interesting too.He knows his stuff...
if you like to read ten million pages of boring text books take this class, if you are not that crazy, stay away!
Rick Fish is the best history teacher I have ever had. His class is fun and interesting. If you want an 'A' all you need to read the chapters and make flash cards for the tests. It's all about rote memorization skills. He's funny, down to earth, and gsve tons of extra credit too!
Quiz everyday on the reading, specific info, not just general. Lectures are useless, hard teacher
Hardest teacher ever!
his class is like watching the HISTORY channel. Great teacher!!!!
The online class is the way to go. There are 42 chapters, you take a 10-question quiz for each one and that's your whole grade. The teacher has chapter overviews that go through all the basic details. I used these and ignored the textbook for the mostpart, and I still pulled off an A. Quick and easy way to get this required class out of the way!
Amazing professor. Hottie too.
Worst teacher I have ever had. The questions on his stupid quizes are extremly in depth, had to study four hours after every class and still got a F. Be prepared to memorize the whole history book, I hated that freaking class.
Rick Fish is one of the best professors I've ever had. Not easy, you have to study and read. But if you want to actually learn and understand the subject of the class you can't have a better teacher. Really funny and knowledgeable- highly recommend taking a class from him!
Professor Fish was an alright teacher.I took it through Distance Ed. at HS, but he seemed hard to approach. All he cares about is History and nothing but History. He often said,"I eat, breath, and sleep History".Caught some interest but didn't make me love History. Must read book EVERY NIGHT and MEMORIZE small details or else you will not do well.
Took it on the internet during the summer semester.Really easy.just read the chapter, take the quiz.all open book and open note. The class started out with having a required midterm and final test. By the end the midterm was eliminated and the final was optional and for extra credit. Easy A, But there is a lot of reading as in a 900 page textbook
Easliy the hardest class I've ever taken. I seriously almost dropped out of college afterwards. Approx. 3-4 hours mandatory reading per class, ten + page research paper, visit 10 historical utah sites and type 10 pages, 10 esseay ? midterm and final. Quizzes every day from reading - pointless but heavy on your grade. He misses class and is rude
This is a GREAT teacher. He is knowledgable and helpful. He can be a little bit pompus sometimes, but I would rather have that than a teacher who doesn't know anything. If you actually want to learn something, take this professor.
I took his online class. All you are graded on is 31 quizes and a midterm. You have to study everynight and every chapter in the book. He gives you very little time to take the quizes not even enought to complete the quizes. SO if you want a hard class take him.
I took this online and it wasn't too bad. I only read one section of each chapter and then took each of the 31 quizzes. For the questions I couldn't answer, I just used the book (which is permitted). The final is extra credit. I would recommend this class to those who can meet deadlines and would rather do quizzes then sit through lectures.
Looks like alot of bad ratings and or good ones stating he's a still a pompous ass. I would agree, class is based on memorizing small details, not learning history itself. Professor is not helpful when approached, this is not learning, this is a way to rub someones ego. Why do colleges keep people like this in the staff?
Rick is awesome at explaining and teaching history. He made it really interesting and funny. Make sure you do all the assigned readings and you should do fine on the quizes. WARNING! The midterm and final are really hard! Study a ton for them and you might be okay?
crazy homework, tons of reading, impossible to get good scores on test due to scope of reading.
Prof Fish was for sure my favorite history teacher at UVU and I was a History major. He was fascinating to listen to and although an "A" could be considered easy. It was a very worthwhile class.
Prof. Fish knows his stuff. Lots of reading involved and quizes every day, but keep up on the reading and you'll be fine. I'd totally take him again.
Utah Hist: Reading-- two books, several articles on blackboard. An 8-10 page paper, 10 short papers. Quizzes almost everyday-- reading is a must to do well. Tough test, all essay (5-7 pages). He's polite, and willing to help and offer comments about your questions or ideas. A couple quizzes are entirely extra credit. Time consuming, but not hard.
There is a quiz almost everyday. Except you wont know when there is going to be a quiz, he will just surprise you so you have to read every single day and memorize little details. The readings are way long and extremely boring. The tests were kind of hard. It was a pretty boring class. He's not always the nicest, but sometimes entertaining.
I loved this class. this guy got me into History which now im obsessed with it. you have to be there on time though cuz he has quizzes at the beginning but his lectures are so interesting. the man knows everything about history
This Class was by far the hardest class I have ever taken.I took it online and he offered little help he couldnt even be bothered to set up an acutal black board page. I read it all and I still only managed to get a B- and I am grateful for it!! All tests are minute detail based and impossible to do well on. Never take from him if you can avoid it.
This class was pretty easy. I did it online. He just gives you quizzes to finish and you can use the book and find all the answers. They are 18 questions and 3 of the questions are extra credit. I didnt ever read the chapters before taking the test, I would just look in the book for the answers. He doesnt really help you out a lot, but I never need
Easy class. Final is all extra credit. If you save the answers that you have put on all the quizzes you will ace the midterm and final, he uses the same question. Took some time but was not hard at all. lots of extra credit
This guy should NOT be teaching, he thinks his class is the only one you are taking, there is SO MUCH reading, and the test are really hard. He will tell you the first day he doesn't care if his students fail. (I was not impressed) Also there is a quiz everyday if you don't read-you're screwed. There are much better teachers DON'T TAKE IT FROM HIM!
Even when reading the book then doing all the incomprehensible quizzes at the end of the novels, I mean chapters, it is still very hard to guess the right answer. Those who say they like this class had to be payed off. 20 min barely gives you enough time to read and comprehend the quiz questions.
Pro. Fish expects you to read and the quizzes that are given every day will kill if you don't. The quizzes are based on minute details in the reading so pay attention. There were 10 site visits with accompanying paper, quizzes, and tests. He doesn't lecture and expects you to strike up the discussion. Lots of KUED and history channel.
One of the worst profs I had at UVU. I wanted to wring his neck. He showed videos from the history channel 3 out of 5 classes and the other days was just a rehashing of the reading. No real teaching about the subject.
WORST TEACHER EVER! He could care less if you need help. I took his class twice, went to class and tried my hardest, read all that i needed to read and still failed twice! I am an a-b student and i could not do this class because i think he thrives on being a pain in the butt teacher. He really could care less if you fail and he will tell you that!
I thought this class was hard. BUT, since the Final was all extra credit, I aced the class. There is a ton of reading and the class should be called Political History.Too much material about politics and government. The Final extra credit gave me 511 out of a possible 525 points. You need to read the "long" chapters to do well on the quizzes.
I don't know what everyone else is talking about, I loved his class!! He requires you to do a ton of work, but I loved coming and I learned more than I have my entire career at UVU. He is a GREAT teacher!! He is very knowledgeable about history!
His class is demanding, but I really learned a lot. It requires a lot of studying, but you know exactly what to expect from him and his class. He gives a very review and lots of ex credit. very knowlegeable and willing to help you out if you are not a lazy face. He's a reasonable guy and I took 2 classes from him
This instructor is paid A LOT of EXTRA money to "teach" this course online. He does absolutely NOTHING. Everything is "self-study" and all questions are answered by a support person in Distance Learning that knows nothing about the subject. I've taken a lot of great "distance" courses where instructors are involved. He could care less!
I have taken 4 classes for professor fish. It's because of him that i became interested in history and am a history major. he knows more about history than anyone i know and is a great teacher and an avid historian. his classes take some work. if you are just floating through college dont waste his time with your laziness.
This was an online course, Professor Fish was clear in his expectations and would respond to my emails promptly. This class is not easy however the final exam is extra credit so if you do good it is a sure A. I would recommend this class.
At first I was failing his class because we had to read every night and I'd forget, but the class became a lot easier once I started reading when he said to. That's all there is to it. He's clear about what to expect and he tells you flat out how to pass his class. He explains things very clearly and makes history more understandable.
He listed the wrong edition of the text book on the syllabus but never addressed it so tests/quizzes were confusing w/ missing sections from the book. The tests were easy, and he was very generous w/ grading! Each test gave extra credit, the final was ALL extra credit. He was really paranoid about people cheating--must've had students who did.
Don't expect to learn anything about history here. You'll be assinged reading in the MS Encarta and given daily graded quizzes to make sure you are reading ... remember Jr. High! Lectures are not. But you have to go to take the quiz. Ed value poor.
Professor Fish is a great professor. This class is HARD if you don't apply all of your EFFORT. Many readings (400 pages for the semester. 1 Midterm exam and 1 Final both are about 75-80 questions. He gives you a generous 80 points worth of E.C. If you are willing to work hard and not expect to just blow through this class, you will do great.
Seriously, I'm SHOCKED by these comments! I LOVED going to class and hearing Professor Fish talk! He weaves a story of history that is fascinating! He made everything he taught so interesting! I took him in the summer and it was a SINCH!!! He told us he's a TON harder during the regular semesters though. But seriously, TAKE HIM!!!
DISASTER. Prides himself on failing people. Ch 6 test? Answers found in Ch 8 later. This happened several times to me. You get 20min for 18 questions & one shot so if he screws up (regularly)ur killed. I'm a serious student but finally decided to take an "F" & retake the course w/diff prof. STEER CLEAR at all costs for true learning. DOES NOT CARE!
Rick Fish is good teacher. He expects some fairly specific things from his students and his class can be a bit time intensive-- this is not a breeze on through course, but it's not too hard either. Some 200 points in quizzes are 'possible' but extra credit quizzes actually up that to some 280 or more. Read up and take notes and you'll do fine.
He is very hard! He asks extemely high detailed questions on the exams. I read the readings and learned things from those but I still did bad on the quizzes and there is no point to stay in class because he just talks about what was said in the readings.
Rick Fish is not as important as he thinks he is. Even though I worked hard and received a good grade I feel like I learned very little that is useful. His personality leaves a lot to be desired and his lectures play more like a game of charades with words. Avoid him if you can but if you must take him be prepared to be frustrated for the semester.
I took the online class, which is basically reading and quizes at the end of the chapter. As long as you keep up with the reading, it's not too hard, but not the most exciting class either.
WORSE TEACHER EVER!!! STAY CLEAR!!!REQUIRED TO READ 60 PAGES A WEEK! I TOOK HIS CLASS ONLINE, YOU TAKE A MILLION QUIZ'S AND THAT'S HOW YOU EARN YOUR GRADE. THE BOOK HE REQUIRES IS HARD TO UNDERSTAND AND THEN QUIZZES YOU ON IT.
Beware, this class requires hours of reading every night. Quizzes almost daily (summer) and the teacher doesn't interact with students. Pure lecture style. He just uses Encarta readings and quizzes/tests you on that. He isn't very friendly with students and for the most part, isn't helpful. Although I did earn an A, I had to work nightly for it.
He was very friendly. He had detailed and structured lectures. Whenever someone asked a question he would put his lecture on hold and take whatever time was needed to explain his answer thoroughly and he usually has an interesting story about most subjects. He is very passionate about history and you can't help but learn if you do your work.
thought i would get an A out of the class because i did really well on everything until i got to final and barely passed the class. didn't teach any of the stuff on the final either wouldn't take this class!!
I took his class, and the man is hilarious and smart! Definitely one of the best history teachers I've ever had. Yes, there were lots of reading assignments and quizzes, but the only way for you to fail was if you didn't out any effort into the class.
WORST TEACHER!!!! I"m sure he is incredibly smart, but the class was not enjoyable at all. A TON of reading every single night and the quizzes were impossible. All the class was was reading and quizzes and I didn't learn a thing in this class. I would never recommend this teacher. If you do well with pure lecture this is a class for you.
I think any of the good comments about this guy are made up. I got an A- in the class. I took 12-15hrs a week. completely ridiculous. This guy is a useless idiot.
This class was freaking hard. You have to know and like history to take this class. He doesn't communicate with you. He lets you be on your own but the text book is way hard. It would be easier to read the dictionary then this book. The quizzes are hard and he words them weird and hard words. I would not recommend this class
Due to the fact that this was an online class and I had to go to his boss for him to email me back, I would say he isn't interested in his students. Upon him finally emailing me he insisted that I had read the syllibus and insisted that there were practice quizes, upon making me feel like a idiot he finally realized the wrong syllibus posted.
So I'm studying for his final right now. Put down all the readings he gave us into one document. It's 239 pages, 12 point font. [If you average the amount of pages he gives you to read every other day, that would be about 14. Multiply that by 20 (FOR 1 Semester!). that's 280 Pages! (bigger because it includes a few more spaces.)] Sounds fun, hah?
Yeah, he makes you read. BECAUSE THAT'S WHAT COLLEGE IS FOLKS :). But he loves what he teaches, and he makes you think about it, and gets into cool details you wouldn't find in other history classes. I found him very helpful, and he always responded to my emails. Definitely recommend him.
Prof. Fish loves history like you wouldn't believe. It's easy to get him talking about almost any relevant topic. The class is pretty straight foreward, just read the readings and show up. I've rarely heard history come alive like when he's telling it, and that's saying something.
pick another teacher it would help you he is not a good teacher at all
Straightforward, lots of reading and quizzes. As long as you show up and read you will pass. He will answer any questions, and he will do it well. Just don't expect an easy A.
This is for the online class. Very little involvement in the class. Slow to non-responsive on email. Class is FILLED with assignments; more than any other TWO classes taken at UVU. First few weeks are overly-loaded with assignments. Additional graders brought into class helped. If you have an alternative to this class, take it.
Professor fish is a genius. He makes learning fun. Quizzes are hard. Lots of memorization. Genius man.
Not a hard class if you do the readings, go to class, and pay attention. He loves history. ask him a question and he will go off about it in details. Pretty basic. Just make sure you study. The test is everything on the study guide. not too confusing.
The Professor frustrated me so much! For the papers we had to write, I got the exacts same comments on both of them--I did get 100% for both, so not complaints there, but he has us read super-long readings that take up my whole day. The quizzes were too hard for me.
His lectures are awesome. I like him hes knowledgable and passionate. Only 1 paper due the whole semester 500 words or less. You will read the entire textbook (263pgs)easy read. However, he has made his own reading pages, small font & the reading is VERY time consuming! You will be required to read & take quiz the by the night before EACH class.
He is a very smart knows alot about history, dates, people, events ect. you MUST read his readings and book and take his quizzes. if u miss the quizzes it will affect your grade. midterm was tough. 1 paper 500 words, pretty easy got an A on it. Final- use his review sheet know the ammendents, court cases especially. he curves his midterm and final.
Rick is a great teacher, he really knows his stuff and is very fair. If you want to learn history you will love his class. I will only take history classes from him.
Very Knowledgeable, but doesn't have a set plan. His original schedule is not even relevant anymore because he changes his mind about the dates. Your never really sure what to study because he doesn't tell you, he just tells you what the quiz is on right before you take it. It is very hard to follow along in this class.
Professor Fish is very unorganized, he is always changing dates for his quizzes. If you don't like reading, DO NOT take this class. You HAVE to attend this class & read or you will fail this class!
PRRRRROOOOOOOO FISH!!!!!! awesome professor I have ever had. If you have a brain you can pass this class
Prof. Fish is honestly one of the funniest entertainnig professors at UVU. He is very smart and has lots of halarious bits.
Mr. Fish is one hell of a teacher. You can tell he's passionate about what he does and it always makes for good teaching skills. I grasp history more clearly when he explains it rather than reading a text book. I did, however, get anxiety attacks from all the work, but that's because I'm slacker.
Funniest, sexiest, smartest prof. Out there
You'll be thinking, "I am paying money for this?" A teacher who is not flexible towards the life of any student, and shows hypocrisy by being incredibly inconsistent with his teaching methods. I do NOT recommend this class, unless you want the work load and responsibility of many classes all in one. Not very kind either. Very repetitive.
Fish's course was very stressful for me. He would hand out readings with important people on the top that he wanted us to know, and people that weren't discussed in the readings appeared on the quizzes. His lectures were interesting, however he seemed very unorganized. Amazingly I passed. Rough midterm but gave a clear view of the final.
If you don't love history before his class ( believe me I wasn't) then you will be after. Gotta love prof. Fish
The reading is incredibly dense; it presents way to much information, and I had no idea what I needed to know. I realized reading, taking notes, and the lectures were useless after I spent about 3 hours researching answers on both open-book tests. His lectures are entertaining, and he is a funny guy. I give this class a "meh" grade.
He is okay but he is not good at doing reviews in his exams, he is not very helpful
He has quizzes on every reading, and he offers extra credit on every single test including the midterm and final. This class doesn't offer a free A, but if you put in a decent amount of work you should get an A.
Rick Fish is a history genius. I love his class and his instruction methods. You will love history after taking Rick's class. Fantastic teacher!!
Professor Fish is flippin' awesome. I have taken three classes from him and loved them all. His classes are difficult because there's a lot of reading and a lot of studying required to do well on the tests, but other than that his classes are great. I went in with a hate towards history and political science, but now it is one of my fav. subjects!
He did A lot of talking about topics that were not relevant to the teaching's of the day. Political rants. Forgot about his own lesson plans. Really dropped the ball for my class. If your in the class all I can tell you is STUDY HARD! Read the readings, take notes and pray that tomorrow he will remember you have a quiz.
Professor Fish is an amazing professor. He's very intelligent (and not to mention funny) and goes into detail on historical events. The readings can be very long and hard to take notes on, but it's very important that you do. He gives extra credit quizzes at the end of the semester, so if you do the work it should be easy to get a decent grade.
I could not have asked for a better professor to take Civil War from than Rick Fish. He is more than knowledgeable, and goes above and beyond to share his passion for the subject. He teaches all sides of the argument, and I saw no bias in how he taught anything. He even helped me with research in another class when I was no longer his student.
He is a very nice guy with a funny sense of humor. You must read all of the readings or you will be so lost. He gives quizzes every day so be ready.
It was an easy A class but the teacher was a bit grumpy to the point students didn't want to ask for help unless one on one.
Rick Fish is really into History and taking his history classes one can get very involved in it. If you don't read or end up skipping class you are on a downward slope. Quizzes on readings before each class. Very understanding on a personal one on one scenario. Requires some effort to pass but typical for a history class.
The Professor knows a lot about history and you can learn a lot. However, you need to be prepared to read the material thoroughly nearly everyday. You can often find help on Quizlet for studying and learning material. The assignments were not hard, but he does give a lot of pop quizzes. You need to buy one book, but it's not expensive.
He is very passionate about what he does which reflects great in the lectures. He is also really funny at times. Make sure to stay on top of the reading there are quizzes pretty much everyday.
One of the best teachers I've ever had.
Professor Fish was really funny, and you can tell that he loves what he is teaching. His class is all graded on quizzes and tests though and you have to read a lot to pass them. It's very time consuming, and is a lot of work
Rick Fish is a funny teacher during class but he's also extremely difficult. He's so intimidating that I'm scared to ask questions. His lectures were kind of all over the place and he often goes off on political rants. The readings are LONG and you have to remember every detail if you want to pass the quizzes that are almost every class.
Found him to be extremely tangential, but oddly enough, I did learn. In-class quizzes are a guarantee (every class), and are extremely detailed about the assigned reading-almost impossible to get 100%. He does offer extra credit, which makes a big difference. Overall, a fair G.E. teacher.
I did not like him at all, the instructions weren't clear on what he wanted and maybe it was just the semester I took him but he was out a lot. Attendance was a grade and each lecture didn't contribute anything to our learning. He would drop pop quizzes like no ones business. All the grades were uploaded a couple weeks before the semester ended...
Interesting teacher in class, but too much homework to do! The readings are super long with tons of information that needs to be memorized. Quizzes that follow are really specific, would not recommend.
Professor is interesting and passionate about the material. He's a good teacher overall. Pop quizzes are frequent and very detailed requiring study. The writing workload is very high. He has opportunities for generous extra credit. #1 Tip, find good writers to exchange peer edits. If you trade with bad writers you make more work for yourself.
Class was terrible in way of studying and trying to remember material, but the teacher was great.
Best history professor at UVU. Extremely knowledgeable and prepared. Passionate about history and government.
Very nice guy but he does give you a lot of readings. There are a lot of pop quizzes, but the quizzes are based on the reading assigned for that day, so it is smart to always do the readings because you never know when the quiz will be. Tests are difficult if you don't really study the material both in the books and the readings.
Taking Professor Fish's class was miserable. I don't feel like I learned anything from him, I only learned from the textbooks. He never comes prepared, and ends up rambling on about his political views, how all students are lazy, and every major other than english does everything wrong. My biggest piece of advice is don't take his class.
Rick Fish is an incredible Political Science teacher. He is very opinionated and knows what he's talking about. If you are not willing to work hard DO NOT take this class. There is a lot of reading and the exams are hard. But it is a good class and I have learned a lot.
The classroom time is mostly lecture, and a lot of it is rambling on about political views rather than the material on tests and quizzes. Theres a decent amount of reading, and you have to read it deliberately to get some of the details asked about on quizzes. There are 1 or 2 quizzes daily, so you cant afford to miss class more than few times.
Constantly takes up class time to share his political views. If you don't know that he hates Republicans and Democrats by the end of the first week, you didn't pay attention. The reading is overwhelming at times and he is relentless. He quizzes on random specific facts rather than important main ideas. His exams are near impossible as well.
This class was extremely difficult when it came to reading. I had to get a binder just for his canvas readings. He gets off track quite a bit and gets behind, but you NEED to keep up with the readings if you want to pass the class.
This professor rants about a lot of the material and is the hardest professor I've ever taken. I have learned a couple of things but he is very boring and don't get me started about the tests and quizzes. His average test grade is a 50! That's a problem. He tests us on very specific details that don't matter to the material. Terrible professor.
This dude is one in a million. If he gets off topic, get ready for a wild ride because his opinions and "controversies" are hilarious. The tests are extremely difficult, but he provides study guides on all of his tests plus none are comprehensive. Quizzes are hit or miss with difficulty, but all offer 1-2 points of extra credit. Get ready to read.
This guy is hilarious. To keep ourselves entertained we kept a book of funny quotes and a tally of all the times he said "Anyhow." It was a fun class. I would study his readings at least a couple of days in advance because his quizzes go into tiny details but all have extra credit points you can get. His tests are timed and its all open book.
Prof Fish knew what he was talking about when it came to writing, super smart guy but terrible teacher. Came to class unprepared, and would choose random youtube videos to fill the time. He also took weeks to grade papers, at the end of the semester he still had not graded 3 of my essays. Would not recommend taking him if you want to learn.
this professor is as hard as it get he is never prepared in class and his quizzes not related to his lectures. don't take this class. This class will take hour of your afternoon and weekends. always watch the videos.
LECTURE, LECTURE, LECTURE. get ready to "memorize" tons of information. Don't take this class if you are a international student and have ZERO background on American History. no critical thinking, only memorizing for the quiz or exam. This professor is not the best choice when taking a summer class.
CONSTANT NRA propaganda. Closet slavery sympathizer? Radical right wing. Loves making students feel dumb. Hates being questioned. Intentionally complicated, long tests. Unsympathetic. Lecture, lecture, lecture. Get ready to memorize 100+ pages of reading taken from Wikipedia. I would literally never take a class from him again if you paid me.
Radical right-wing, NRA supporter, and a libertarian. Rants about Millenials. Prints packets of information from Wikipedia for you to memorize for quizzes and tests. The packets do all the teaching and he does all the lecturing. He pretty much goes over the material you've already read. You're pretty much teaching yourself. Avoid this professor.
He does have very open political views and you can see them in his teaching. However, if you have an opposite opinion with accurate enough knowledge he is really very respectful. It is an open class where you can feel comfortable to ask questions, and join in a (sometimes heated but fun) discussion.
Professor Fish was... an interesting guy. He was quite unpredictable. He would warn us about quizzes and then decided not to give us any. He "invites" questions during the lecture, but when people actually asked questions in class 9/10 times he would respond with "Did you do the reading?" and give you a dumb look. His class is doable, but not fun.
I actually found this site trying to google Rick Fish because I had him as a professor 15+ years ago and was searching/hoping for a podcast or YouTube (my how time flies!) He was so amazing as a storyteller/teacher. Loved attending class. His lectures painted such a vivid picture, studying was almost not needed. You just remembered everything.
When asking a question, he is extremely sarcastic and rude. Not helpful in his explanations, if he even explains. Slow and confusing grading style.
The only thing I learned from this class was why said political party is wrong. I felt like his political opinions were forced on me and if I hadn't already understood my beliefs it would be easy to be swayed. He made very uncomfortable comments throughout the semester, would not recommend taking his class.
When you ask questions, he acts so annoyed but claims he welcomes questions. The only things going on your grade are research projects and exams but you are given a lot of readings. However he is very enthusiastic in his lectures making it easier to listen
The assignments were confusing, and the due dates were almost always wrong. The classes basically consisted of a tangent or reading the assignments. He had an extreme amount of difficulty with canvas, and he rarely responded to my questions sent in email. The feedback on assignments were unhelpful, and I got very little out of the class. ENG 2010
This class had a reading for every single day and some of them were 60 pages. The tests are open note, but they're 85 questions in 50 minutes. It's like taking the ACT once a month. And forget about asking for clarification during class because he will humiliate you in front of your whole class and make you feel dumb for even asking a question.
Not what you would expect for an introductory course. The exams were ridiculous, and I basically taught myself everything through the stacks of readings. He never used canvas so I never knew my final grade until' the end of the semester. Doesn't seem like he enjoys teaching, mainly just went on rants through the entire class.
Prof Fish was AMAZING! I would recommend him to anyone. He's pretty sarcastic and his tests are difficult but they're completely open note. He gives extra credit but you better be prepared to study and read. While this class wasn't easy, I would totally take it again. Prof Fish explains things so well and is so good about answering questions!
Rick Fish is the best professor I've ever had. Absolute top notch American History professor. Highly recommended!
I was excited for the course but was overall disappointed. This professor has some of the worst lectures I have ever sat through, they are terribly structured and a majority of the time was him complaining about democrats or other such things. The class is almost entirely tests which would not be a problem if he actually taught what was on the test
Professor Fish grades mostly based on test scores and one final 1500 word paper. You definitely have to study for the test but they are open note so it's not too hard. He was a really funny teacher and helped explain things in applicable ways and is a great storyteller. He also gives extra points on tests so he's very generous with points.
His lectures are usually off topic, not great about timing himself. He is EXTREMELY right leaning, and spewing Fox News talking points as pure fact. He claims to welcome questions but hates answering them if he doesn't like the answer. His tests are open-note, kinda difficult, but he gives random extra credit points. Do the extra credit powerpoint.
This professor would go off on personal belief tangents quite frequently. Some people would laugh, but it was kind of inappropriate with the setting of the class & what we were discussing. Items that could be graded: 4 exams (85 questions, 1 hour), 1 research paper, 1 extra credit PowerPoint.
Fish's class is great. 4 open-note tests, 1 hour each. 1 essay. 1 extra credit powerpoint. He is politically driven, but makes for interesting content. What you get out of class is what you put in. Making a study group with your classmates makes your experience 10x better. We made a shared google sheet of the study guide and that helped tons!
I really enjoyed Fish's class! He definitely has a conservative perspective to political science which I found refreshing. You're not going to become socialist while taking this class. Find a study group to create a study guide document for the test. Make sure to do the readings! The entire grade is based off of 4 tests and a paper. 10/10 recommend
I learned a lot in his class about American history. Be warned, he is biased when taking about the civil war and economic. The study guide is really helpful for his test. Do the reading most of his question are from there.
I went to one class and had my fill of the professor and his political tangents. I listened to the lectures online at 2x speed and stayed up with the reading and did well. There are four main tests that make up the majority of your grade- be warned if you are not a good test taker. The extra credit does help boost your grade significantly.
Nothing he speaks about matters unless its about a reading and or about the review, This means you have to read every reading he sends you.
Won't pass unless you attend. Need to keep on top of assignments, wasn't too hard but really really time consuming because it was a writing class. He is not very understanding towards students. He does have some pretty funny stories thought. All lecture.
Professor Fish is a gifted teacher. Students often criticize him because he explains the Constitution in a way that doesn't allow for them to contradict the Document. Fish is pragmatic, intelligent, and a historical genius. You won't be disappointed.
I have never had a professor be so childish and difficult to work with. He quite literally yells his opinions all day and is often very late for classes. He was very strong in his political views and belittles all other opinions while making jokes about how many times he has been arrested for various events. He is a miserable man.
Professor Fish often showed up late to class and showed up unprepared. He made students feel nervous throughout the entire semester. He graded things late and used youtube to fill up the class. He was extremely political and often went on tangents.
Professor Fish is the best history teacher at UVU. He is a true professional and a dedicated academic. I really enjoyed his presentations and his zest for American history.
Professor Fish's class is a mixed bag. While his lectures can be off-topic and politically charged, the open-note tests and extra credit opportunities make it manageable. Using Unstuck study ai and study groups helped me stay on top of the material.
I'm not sure how Rick Fish is still employed at UVU. His history lectures are biased and degrading towards minorities (he legit told our class that slavery wasn't "that bad" and that Native Americans are responsible for ruining the environment). He comes to class late, unprepared, and spends most of the time spouting his personal opinions. 0/10
Rick Fish is one of the worst teachers I have ever had in my life. His class is so boring and you pick one topic and have to stick with it the rest of the semester for all the essays. He literally has no showed to class twice and never told anyone that he was missing until after the class was over. Do not take if you cant commit to going everyday.
He was very unprofessional. He posted canvas halfway into the year, never had the quizzes or assignments clear or in canvas and never had the quizzes graded or showed which ones actually needed to be taken. He also after missing one random day of class *that wasn't the final test* dropped my grade to a C because I missed one assignment.
He cancels class all the time but is extremely unaccommodating when you have to miss class. He gives out extra credit like candy to make up for the fact that it is required to go to class but he is never prepared. He just gives random rants about politics and pushes his political beliefs the entire class as if this isn't an ENGLISH class. Just no.
