Great teacher, extremely unfair marker! It's either memorize the book or fail!
Good notes and lectures. Tests are OK.

If you want to fail this course? Here you are
Well taught. Succinct. He encourages discussion. Lots of reading.

learnt a lot from him, but he's not the guy you want for easy marks
hard marker..
better than other university professor b/c of his clarity
if you'd like to recieve 1/4 marks then by all means that his class. HARD Maker
condescending, arrogant, articulate person but not clear on teaching objectives
He has this twinkle in his eye as if he's always about to crack a joke...
Amazing, great notes!!! I used em at ubc in a course and they helped me a lot!

*very* helpful. I once missed a final, and he let me make it up!
He is a REALLY good teacher. And if you want to fail, don't do the work. But if you pay attention and study then you will do well. Really good teacher.
If you listen in class and do some reading you'll have no problem. Gives clear notes, and promotes good discussion
Gives great notes! Very intelligent and organized in his teaching. A tough marker but fair.
one of the best profs you'll get. he'll let you exercise your argument no matter how weak or wrong, and he'll assist yer good points and bash the bad. organised reasonable excellent

easy tests
a very weird teacher in my opinion
he is good
Very Clear Presenter, Facilitates discussion well.
Be prepared to study hard. His midterms are fairly difficult. As long as you attend the lectures and take good notes you'll be okay, just remember to pay close attn as his lecturing speed can be blitzenly fast at times.
Very helpful, promotes great discussion. Marks fairly even if he doesn't agree with your point of view.
Rick is an excellent teacher. He lays out the concepts in clear and easy to understand overheads. In terms of assignments, he is looking for you to have ACTUALLY thought the idea through, and for original thought. Plus he's kinda a neat guy!!
this class is boring. he's a good teacher though. gives good notes
Dr. Gordon is generally a nice guy, has nice clear overhead notes although he goes fast. Hard marker though, demands original thought and spectacular recall of the theories. Work hard and study u can get a C+/B and A seems highly unlikely! 2 test, 2 paper

His notes are very clear, but he is a hard marker. Asks for definations to be word for word from notes and stuff. Very helpful yet makes everything so clear in notes and rushes through the class, therefore, not leaving much to discuss.
very hard marker.. very unclear... wrote an essay.. followed the guidelines to the dot.. when i got the essay back, he expected alot more things...
Very clear notes. Can let you have a clear understanding about the theories. Overall not really a hard marker but you really need to try to guess what he is expecting.
I didn't enjoy Gordon's class at all. I really enjoyed philosophy until I enrolled in his class. I found his lectures to be dry and unclear. Hardly anyone asked questions in his class b/c he's rude & belittling. Other profs don't like him very much.
This person below is obviously a cry baby who blames others for his or her own problems. Don't believe it. If you can get over yourself you will find Rick's class very enlightening. Great teacher. Leads you to figure it out for yourself.
Although this class was challenging, Rick's notes helped us understand the concept
Rick is a great guy but his class is only interesting if people particpate. it hin lots fins him intimidating because my class was silent. still, don't knock the teacher just because you are unprepared to think. i got an A+ in the class with ease.
A contortionist if I ever saw one! Watch him turn into a prune face and dangle his head sideways whenever he encounters a moment of profound illumination. Someone hand him a laxative!
A very inspiring and insightful man. His lectures were well-organized and he appreciates any comment you throw at him. Not condescending at all and never a dull moment. A great teacher.
He supplies tons of good notes, you really can't miss a class. If you follow the notes you'll get a B, but he is a tough cookie and there was hardly any A's in my class so think highly of your B, it's like an A in anyone elses class.HARD MARKER!!
My favorite course ever taken. It was very interesting. He was really clear in his lectures. Tough class but worth it. He is a very nice prof also. I highly recommend it!
He is very organized, sharp-minded, and open to students' questions. However, he has high expectations. He is a tough marker. If you want to learn philosophy take him. If you want to get easy good grades AVOID HIM.
Rick is cool. One of the best profs i have so far.
really clear notes, dont miss a class. make sure the answers on your test are EXACTLY what he had on the overheads, or it'll be wrong. He's a silly marker. watch him evade student questions, or answer a different alltogether. a good class though.
Rick made my semester very difficult. I love philosophy, but his style is so different from the rest of the profs at Langara. He speaks in very abstract terms and it's hard to follow him. I would recommend Alister Browne (or anyone else!) instead.
Dr.Gordon explains things with great clarity and encourages class activities. He always end up explaining more than what you were asking. But his class isn't easy, his exams and essays are rather difficult - for me at least.
Worse teacher in that ****in school pathetic person, sucky teacher!
Hmmm, dont take his class 1st thing in the morning, he'll put u back to sleep. i could have done better in his class if his lectures weren't so boring. notes are simple and easy to follow ONLY if u pay attention 100% of the class. hard maker on essays, but average midterm and final if u prepare well
Dr. Gordon is a clear, concise instructor and I enjoyed his class throughly. I will be looking forward to taking more of his courses as I learned alot and enjoy the class disscussions. Be warned he is a hard marker, but fair. Thanks Gordon!
A very articulate, and knowledgeable prof, however, he is a VERY hard marker. I thought he was a bit too harsh with his grading, especially for an intro course. Notes are easy to follow and clear, classes are fun, and he is a laid back kind of prof!
recommended
very good teacher but attendend every class and be sure to use lots of examples to explain yourself. I think the negative comments here were from people who can figure out what profs actually want. He's a great prof and puts lots of effort in his class and notes but pay attention
Dr. Gordon is one of the best profs. I've ever had. Uses lots of overheads for notetaking, answers questions clearly and concisely, is respectful towards students, laid back and interesting to listen to. Subject matter is interesting and movies sometimes used to reinforce concepts. I learned a lot in this class.
Like any good philosophy prof, he marks based on your rigorousness, not your ability to regurgitate facts. If anything he's more lenient than most, so I don't understand people who are complaining. He turned a subject I wasn't excited about into my favourite subject that semester.
His class is very boring! Don't argue with his point of view because he gets really mad and argues with you until you think the same way! Unfair marker on essays .. People who downloaded and copy essays got better marks than those who wrote them from scratch.
I find myself constantly taking part. He enjoys pointing out holes in arguments, but do not be discouraged, he wants you to think. Hard. I was not interested in metaphysics before this class, now I love to come to class, I want to know what will be discussed next. And class is really a discussion.
If you think that philosophy should be subject to interpretation DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. He has clear, organized lectures, but you have to adopt his view or get a bad grade. He expects you to spell everything out on exams.
you pretty much have to write down everything he says in lectures to do well on exams, but that makes it ez at the same time.
My experience: I went to class and did the work. I didn't study hard enough for the exams and wasn't doing well. His class notes were clear, his theories set out well and expectations clearly stated. However, I did not do well on his 1st paper, I went to him for a little bit of help and my next paper jumped up to an A-. Pay attention, ask for help!
Rick is a great instructor and a good guy.He really knows his stuff and has high expectations for students. If your motive is to truly learn Philosophy and you're a hard worker you won't have a problem with his class, but it certainly isn't a cake walk.If you're looking for an easy course and a GPA booster this is not the course for you;hard marker.

Bad proffessor. Is unclear of what he expects from you and goes on about nonsense. If you dare say freedom exists, and you are free to chose your own destiny you get a automatic fail. He is also a socialist and makes his socialist views very well known.
Failed the first test, but pulled a B+ in the end. Take good notes and regurgitate them for exams. Write papers carefully, and understand material thoroughly. Ask questions! Esp. objections to args. If you don't, he'll just move right along. Good guy, though; can't be easy teaching silly 1st year students like myself!
Gordon is a great teacher. He is very knowledgeable about his subject, and is very considerate when responding to dumb comments. He helps people develop thier own thoughts and doesn't attempt to impose any particular view on the students. If you want to develop the ability to make a coherent argument, he'll help facilitate that learning.
Stick to the book, he does not give marks for creativness. Don't ever think outside the box or you will fail.
He spends WAY too much time repeating the simplest ideas like 'is a rectangle REALLY a rectangle?' You get it the first time, and are just bored for an hour after that. He can't stand anyone that questions his ideas, and he'll just mock you until you finally give up. He doesn't establish the necessary criteria for his exams. Worst professor ever
He is an interesting professor, very clear in his lectures;nevertheless, the course is not an easy one. However, if you are interested in philosophy, you would like it.
Yes, TOTALLY regurgitate notes and text material. If you cannot pay attention to monotone speakers, do not take him. He's a nice man but he's dryer than a desert island and duller than a wooden spoon. If you like lively teachers, stay away from Rick. I don't dislike him; just stating the facts.
He's not a bad teacher overall, i mean this dude's got enthusiasm with wise words and all, but His TEACHING METHOD- too fast. He's demanding about note taking even when it's NOT on the overhead/board and inclass discussions are strongly encouraged.
Marks very hard and it has to be to his liking. Try and use your own formula on philosophy essays will guarantee you a fail and he won't let you get creative and think outside of the box either. This was supposed to be my easiest course but he totally killed my interest in philosophy. Only take this course if you're really into this kind of stuff.
thumbs up!)) Very nice, consistent and clear step-by-step lectures as well as lively discussions where everyone feels welcome)
Best professer that I've ever had. Really fun class discussions, really vibrant interesting. Makes concepts very very clear. Exactly what a professor should be.
Gordon is great. he's such a funny and likable guy. he's soft spoken and helpful and you can tell he enjoys blowing people's minds. you should take his class, he's a really nice and good teacher.
Rick is a brilliant teacher but an extremelly difficult marker. On our first paper in class the highest mark was a 3 out of 5 over 30+ people. This caused about half the class to drop. Figure out what it is he wants on a paper you can get your self an A+, but if your expecting an easy A you'll just end up wasting your time. I had fun and got a B+
very good teacher. Knows his stuff. essays are easy to get B's in. If you want to write on a different topic, just talk to him. interesting classes.
Great prof - knows his stuff. Hard course to do well in, but worth the effort.
very good
He's pleasant enough. Kind of a hard marker, my highest mark in class was about a 73. He's very clear, he puts his notes on an overhead while he's talking and encourages class discussion, which is nice.
He is a really nice prof but I find his lectures to be pretty boring. He speaks in a very monotone voice that sometimes makes it difficult to stay awake. I would only recommend him if you are not taking many courses and have the time to really focus on this course. He is a very hard marker but does encourage class discussions
a ok prof but discriminates against people who thinks outside the box.he wants you to stick to the lecture book and whatever he teaches and he doesnt like creativity. very very bad prof.if his discrimination doesnt get you then his boring lectures surely.
I enjoyed Rick's class very much. He is a very intelligent person, and class is extremely interesting. Regurgitate notes for exams, and stick to a structured essay. I expected the class to be difficult but pulled off an A by putting in a lot of effort. Do not be afraid with emailing him any concerns, he is understanding!
This class is quite difficult due to high expectations. There's very little room for open-minds & the only way to pass is make good use of class material. Gordon is a nice teacher but doesn't have much energy/life & speaks in a monotone voice. This is difficult to handle in a 2h class! If you don't meet expectations be prepared for a low mark!
I'm writing this because I don't understand why people are saying you cannot be creative. Rick allows room for creativity in essays especially. You can be creative, but be philosophical, and present an argument with clarity, rigor, and strength. Don't listen to 99 percent of the comments on here.
