Be prepared to study hard. His midterms are fairly difficult. As long as you attend the lectures and take good notes you'll be okay, just remember to pay close attn as his lecturing speed can be blitzenly fast at times.

Rick is an excellent teacher. He lays out the concepts in clear and easy to understand overheads. In terms of assignments, he is looking for you to have ACTUALLY thought the idea through, and for original thought. Plus he's kinda a neat guy!!

Dr. Gordon is generally a nice guy, has nice clear overhead notes although he goes fast. Hard marker though, demands original thought and spectacular recall of the theories. Work hard and study u can get a C+/B and A seems highly unlikely! 2 test, 2 paper

His notes are very clear, but he is a hard marker. Asks for definations to be word for word from notes and stuff. Very helpful yet makes everything so clear in notes and rushes through the class, therefore, not leaving much to discuss.

I didn't enjoy Gordon's class at all. I really enjoyed philosophy until I enrolled in his class. I found his lectures to be dry and unclear. Hardly anyone asked questions in his class b/c he's rude & belittling. Other profs don't like him very much.

This person below is obviously a cry baby who blames others for his or her own problems. Don't believe it. If you can get over yourself you will find Rick's class very enlightening. Great teacher. Leads you to figure it out for yourself.

Rick is a great guy but his class is only interesting if people particpate. it hin lots fins him intimidating because my class was silent. still, don't knock the teacher just because you are unprepared to think. i got an A+ in the class with ease.

He supplies tons of good notes, you really can't miss a class. If you follow the notes you'll get a B, but he is a tough cookie and there was hardly any A's in my class so think highly of your B, it's like an A in anyone elses class.HARD MARKER!!

really clear notes, dont miss a class. make sure the answers on your test are EXACTLY what he had on the overheads, or it'll be wrong. He's a silly marker. watch him evade student questions, or answer a different alltogether. a good class though.

Rick made my semester very difficult. I love philosophy, but his style is so different from the rest of the profs at Langara. He speaks in very abstract terms and it's hard to follow him. I would recommend Alister Browne (or anyone else!) instead.

Dr.Gordon explains things with great clarity and encourages class activities. He always end up explaining more than what you were asking. But his class isn't easy, his exams and essays are rather difficult - for me at least.

Hmmm, dont take his class 1st thing in the morning, he'll put u back to sleep. i could have done better in his class if his lectures weren't so boring. notes are simple and easy to follow ONLY if u pay attention 100% of the class. hard maker on essays, but average midterm and final if u prepare well

A very articulate, and knowledgeable prof, however, he is a VERY hard marker. I thought he was a bit too harsh with his grading, especially for an intro course. Notes are easy to follow and clear, classes are fun, and he is a laid back kind of prof!

Dr. Gordon is one of the best profs. I've ever had. Uses lots of overheads for notetaking, answers questions clearly and concisely, is respectful towards students, laid back and interesting to listen to. Subject matter is interesting and movies sometimes used to reinforce concepts. I learned a lot in this class.

Like any good philosophy prof, he marks based on your rigorousness, not your ability to regurgitate facts. If anything he's more lenient than most, so I don't understand people who are complaining. He turned a subject I wasn't excited about into my favourite subject that semester.

His class is very boring! Don't argue with his point of view because he gets really mad and argues with you until you think the same way! Unfair marker on essays .. People who downloaded and copy essays got better marks than those who wrote them from scratch.

I find myself constantly taking part. He enjoys pointing out holes in arguments, but do not be discouraged, he wants you to think. Hard. I was not interested in metaphysics before this class, now I love to come to class, I want to know what will be discussed next. And class is really a discussion.

If you think that philosophy should be subject to interpretation DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. He has clear, organized lectures, but you have to adopt his view or get a bad grade. He expects you to spell everything out on exams.

My experience: I went to class and did the work. I didn't study hard enough for the exams and wasn't doing well. His class notes were clear, his theories set out well and expectations clearly stated. However, I did not do well on his 1st paper, I went to him for a little bit of help and my next paper jumped up to an A-. Pay attention, ask for help!

Rick is a great instructor and a good guy.He really knows his stuff and has high expectations for students.If your motive is to truly learn Philosophy and you're a hard worker you won't have a problem with his class,but it certainly isn't a cake walk.If you're looking for an easy course and a GPA booster this is not the course for you;hard marker.

Failed the first test, but pulled a B+ in the end. Take good notes and regurgitate them for exams. Write papers carefully, and understand material thoroughly. Ask questions! Esp. objections to args. If you don't, he'll just move right along. Good guy, though; can't be easy teaching silly 1st year students like myself!

Gordon is a great teacher. He is very knowledgeable about his subject, and is very considerate when responding to dumb comments. He helps people develop thier own thoughts and doesn't attempt to impose any particular view on the students. If you want to develop the ability to make a coherent argument, he'll help facilitate that learning.

He spends WAY too much time repeating the simplest ideas like 'is a rectangle REALLY a rectangle?' You get it the first time, and are just bored for an hour after that. He can't stand anyone that questions his ideas, and he'll just mock you until you finally give up. He doesn't establish the necessary criteria for his exams. Worst professor ever

Yes, TOTALLY regurgitate notes and text material. If you cannot pay attention to monotone speakers, do not take him. He's a nice man but he's dryer than a desert island and duller than a wooden spoon. If you like lively teachers, stay away from Rick. I don't dislike him; just stating the facts.

Marks very hard and it has to be to his liking. Try and use your own formula on philosophy essays will guarantee you a fail and he won't let you get creative and think outside of the box either. This was supposed to be my easiest course but he totally killed my interest in philosophy. Only take this course if you're really into this kind of stuff.

Rick is a brilliant teacher but an extremelly difficult marker. On our first paper in class the highest mark was a 3 out of 5 over 30+ people. This caused about half the class to drop. Figure out what it is he wants on a paper you can get your self an A+, but if your expecting an easy A you'll just end up wasting your time. I had fun and got a B+

He's pleasant enough. Kind of a hard marker, my highest mark in class was about a 73. He's very clear, he puts his notes on an overhead while he's talking and encourages class discussion, which is nice.

I would only recommend him if you are not taking many courses and have the time to really focus on this course. He is a very hard marker but does encourage class discussions

I enjoyed Rick's class very much. He is a very intelligent person, and class is extremely interesting. Regurgitate notes for exams, and stick to a structured essay. I expected the class to be difficult but pulled off an A by putting in a lot of effort. Do not be afraid with emailing him any concerns, he is understanding!

This class is quite difficult due to high expectations. There's very little room for open-minds & the only way to pass is make good use of class material. Gordon is a nice teacher but doesn't have much energy/life & speaks in a monotone voice. This is difficult to handle in a 2h class! If you don't meet expectations be prepared for a low mark!

I'm writing this because I don't understand why people are saying you cannot be creative. Rick allows room for creativity in essays especially. You can be creative, but be philosophical, and present an argument with clarity, rigor, and strength. Don't listen to 99 percent of the comments on here.
