Explained logic very clearly. Exams are reflective of class material.

He is a young guy. He's cool. If you've 'started down the rabbit hole' as he would say, of philosophy, you will enjoy the class. You dont need the book, just take good notes
He is knowledgable about the material, but is NOT CUT OUT FOR TEACHING. His explations of the material are painfully vague, and his notes are EXCRUCIATING! I do think he is competent, just terrible at communicating ideas.
I thought he was easy to understand and his notes were helpful, due to the fact that the material was dense to begin with.
I've taken two classes from Mr. McCasland, Logic and intro, and have had goods expereinces in both classes. I found his notes very helpful for reviewing.
Rick was a very funny guy. He tried being one of us..which was nice at times.Didnt teach some on the time but still if you take good notes then youll be cool. You dont need the book he gives you everything. He really got you thinkin about Ethics and what you believed...but never let you know what he really thought. pretty good over all!
he is a pretty good teacher, he always think about the student when he teaches the class, he don't just rabble, and he is easy to pass, one can really learn out of his class
His sense of humor makes the class fun. He does mumble, so you have to listen closely and/or ask for clarification.
Wonderful guy, but pretty hard. It seems as if he puts trick questions on his exams. But if you show up, follow the notes and read, you should be fine. He helps out alot if you email him too. Really flexible and easygoing.Makes the class interesting. I like when he just stands there and waits for someone to answer a question.. sometimes its 5 min!
Hard class due to material. If you take notes and follow along throughout the classes, you will be fine. Answers any questions you have after the class or by emails.
The most difficult 101 course I've taken yet. A bit too extreme...
I took his class on campus and it was good class (but difficult). My friend took the on-line class and told me it was alomst impossible! The handouts do help if you fall behind. He does review before each class to catch you back up to the current topic.
I took his class on campus and it was good class (but difficult). My friend took the on-line class and told me it was almost impossible! The handouts do help if you fall behind. He does review before each class to catch you back up to the current topic.
Took on line and was a tremendous amount of work. Hard class for 101 and not an online class
I agree, ended up dropping the online class and took it in the classroom with him. It was much more manageable. I liked the class and the instructor, just take it on campus!
Guest lectured for a Saturday class. It was one of the best lectures I've attended at college to date. I had no interest in philosophy, but his lecture got me interested in the subject and the material we were covering. I wish he taught at our college.
I think he's a great teacher. The subject matter, itself, is a little hard for me, personally, to grasp, but it has nothing to do with his teaching skill. He is thorough. He will clarify as much as you ask him to. He's also funny, which is a nice bonus. I'd definitely take him again. I'm not so sure I'd take Logic again though.
I actually hated this class even though I love philosophy. He seems really disorganized and focuses too much on religion. This is not a philosophy of religion class, but you might as well be taking a basic Christian theology class.
Rick is nice but he is extremely disorganized. The material came easily to me but only because I searched out other sources for reference as his notes are nearly incomprehensible. The readings from the book were very helpful but he stopped using the book entirely halfway through the quarter.
I thought the class was well presented for an online class. More importantly, he responded to any emails immediately. Many of the on-line profs do not get back to when you really need it. The notes were very helpful and were a good backup if something was presented from the book. The online material was easy access and overall a simple class to fol
Class discussion wonderfully done however tests were heavy and worded differently then the discussion in class. Enjoyed the teacher but was overwhelmed by the class.
Although this is my second time taking his class I enjoy it more than the first. The first time I went in not being open minded but then this go around actually opening myself to the ideas of philosophy really help. I would suggest taking the class in person as to on the web though. He replies to emails quickly and will work with you very well.
Great instructor! You may have to read the material a few times but really interesting class. I would take the class on-campus rather than on-line, a lot of reading.
Very helpful. Material gets hard, but he goes over the material and makes sure that everyone understands before moving on. Highly recommend.
Great prof and great class. Explains the material and goes over many examples in class. Will not go on until you understand the material. Highly recommend if you have to take logic.
great man very helpful. looks intimidating first class to keep students in line. after that its smooth flow. helps individualy if need be and if students ask. i highly recommend him
A nice guy and a good teacher. He broke down the material so that it was very manageable.
Definitely one of the best classes I have ever taken & one of my favorite profs! Not an easy class, but Rick's lectures helped to clarify the material & he included interesting handouts & videos. Class discussions were fun and thought-provoking, & he made sure we understood the material before moving on. Tests were difficult, but not unreasonable.
Does not respond in a timely manner to emails. Does not provide a complete syllabus.
He is the only teacher with no calendar and no class info on tests or due dates. Jokes are nice the first class but after that you need to be good. I found a youtube video for the textbook and much better than his class. I wished I drop this class before the refund of 100% kicked in. Kinda sloppy structure of teaching and boring.
Very clear on presenting the material. Will not go on until the class understands the chapter. Tests and the areas that the class will cover are in the syllabus. Highly recommend.
I thought the online class was presented fairly clear and while the material is difficult, the overall on-line class was easy. Not a lot of reading or work AT ALL. He responded to any email I sent. Tests were a challenge but if you read the material you should be fine.
This class rocked. He explained everything and made sure we got it before we moved on. Really no homework at all, but you needed to keep up with the exercises in the book.
The way he words stuff is confusing but he gives handouts that have what you need to know. Just read what he gives you on your own time and you should be ok
Very cool guy. Long lectures hard to sit through he just reads off the packets he gives you. Gives a lot of chances to succeed in the class with extra points. I didn't buy the book and I don't think its necessary to have although if you miss class you wont know what's going on.
Rick is an awesome professor. I dreaded taking this class due to it's content, but Rick is very open minded and is equally fair to both sides of every argument. Weekly assignments are easy enough, tests aren't bad, the essay questions are long but you can use your notes on that part. I would definitely recommend!
The content of this class is interesting, but Rick makes it difficult to discuss with his lack of moderation when students begin debating, and some people never get a chance to say anything. He spends a lot of time repeating himself when asked questions instead of clarifying in a different way. Many test questions very convolutedconfusing.
A lot of people say that his class is difficult - but that is definitely not true. I studied for about 5 minutes on each test and got an A on all of them (because I paid attention in class). When people were doing bad on the extended response questions, he got rid of them. He tests what he teaches and is an interesting professor.
His lectures are interesting and after taking his class you will view life a little different. He simplifies the material as much as he can so students get a better understanding . I am not particularly good at writing essays let alone philosophy papers but he really worked with me. If it wasn't for him I don't know what I would have done.
Oh boy! This class is boring; at least that's how I see it. He only talks and reads off the book. NO POWERPOINT OR BOARD EXERCISES. whyyyyyyy?
I think Rick is an awesome professor! Just show up and do your work and you will not have any issues! He is also easy on the eyes so that makes class time more enjoyable! ;)
Rick was a great professor for Intro to Logic. Many people don't understand how tough of a class logic is, but Rick does his best to explain it and get people to understand it with boring you to death! This is my second time with him and I would take him for a third time for sure.
This class rocked. You'll need to read but interesting stuff and he gives a lot of examples to understand the material. Will email you back if you have any questions.
Put your cell phone away and show up. He's funny and if you're having a tough time he'll work with you. Don't take this class of you want to fart around but it's interesting if you're willing to show up.
Once you get past his mildly crass exterior, Rick is an excellent teacher. He knows the material like the back of his hand, and is always willing to answer questions. Even his humor grew on me toward the end of the semester. Definitely the best Philosophy teacher I've encountered at Columbus State.
This class was great, I would take it again. He knows that material really well and will help you if you need it. Don't miss classes though, you will get lost.
Mr. Mccasland is an awesome guy. Very personable in and out of class. Easy A, barely did any work or studying. Loved talking to him outside of class about music; there are not many teachers with whom I could do that with in great detail. Stand up guy. He's extremely humorous, too! Recommended! MW
Professor McCasland is full of good intentions and has an obvious passion for philosophy. What mires his ability to teach effectively is his inability to go back and revise the things he has submitted to students to read, including all major course information. If he would just slow down and revise the documents he has made, ideas would be clearer.
Stand up guy.
Mr. McCasland is a great professor. Too bad there aren't more like him.
I love Mr. McCasland! I wish I could take all my classes with him!
Easy course if your a lectured based learner. For me it was very difficult because his teaching style is lectures and lots of reading. No blackboard or homework assignments so your test are your grade which sucks if you don't understand the material. He's very approachable and will help you if you ask. Expect lots of reading!
(ONLINE Phil. 1101) Lecture material was very messy and unorganized. Very hard to follow his syllabus and workload. Classwork wasn't hard, just frustrating to figure out. And So. Much. Reading. The work is not very difficult, it is just time consuming. Tests were pretty close to study guides. Barely touched the textbook.
I am currently taking him online and I hate it. It takes him forever to grade, messy and unorganized directions, SO MUCH READING. You would think a teacher would have basic grammar skills. Do not take his online philosophy class if you can help it. He doesn't get you prepared for tests either.
There is a good amount of reading, but it is a philosophy class, so I'm not surprised. You do not use the book a lot either. The material covered is very thought provoking, and weekly questions will be based upon how well you know the big ideas of each philosopher (essentially).
He knows how to teach this class very well. Pay attention and do what he suggests. He will tutor when he's available and you can take a picture of what your working on, send it as an attachment and let him know what chapter, section, problem #, and page # and most likely he will check it out and respond. Attend class & NO phones! Listen to him.
Avoid this professor if you care about your grade
Rick McCasland's course was simple if you read the required chapters in the text and attempted the review questions in each section of the text. He effectively demonstrated the material by giving solutions to questions in the book and using examples for the students. He was very flexible towards students who were trying during this course.
This course was engaging and would certainly be quite difficult if I had not devoted time to the course material. The course doesn't require you to read the textbook, but students who started to fall behind had a hard time getting their grades back. The course moves quickly, and there is a lot to learn, particularly in the last 1/4 of the course.
Fun class keeps your attention.
Prof. McCasland was pretty good. If you take him in the summer you do not have to write a paper, and you are graded only on tests that he is fairly lenient with, difficult, but some ec questions, take home essays, and some points given just for signing your name. Textbooks are NOT mandatory, everything is easily found online. Lectures w/ packets.
He usually doesn't have a set schedule. The tests are introduced in the class before, which means you have very little room to work around tests from other classes.
Disordered and does not have a set schedule
Worst Professor ever, he knows the course but he have no idea of how to teach. He was reading everything in the book not explaining anything. He will not give you any work before the tests and NO REVIEWS for the test at all. His tests are tough because you have no idea of what your tests will be like. I will never recommend him to anyone.
This is by far the worst professor I have ever ever encountered. Avoid him at all costs. Doesn't gives reviews for tests and is disorganized. No sense of compassion whatsoever. AVOID IF YOU CARE ABOUT YOUR GRADES!
Great prof. I know for our class we had an outline for every class and a review class the covered the outline. Ive had him for two classes now. You do have to read, but no homework, and for the online , you had weekly material to answer.
AVOID RUN RUN RUN!
Avoid like the plague.
Hes alright but, but when it comes to relaying the material hes just not good. He knows the material just cant teach it in a properly. Never post grades, were in the last week of the semester and I still dont know my grades. Its as if he hasnt heard of blackboard. Gives you hard test, only good thing is that you get one as a take home.
His online course was very confusing. His syllabus that was posted to blackboard was extremely unorganized along with the rest of his course and instructions. Due dates for assignment would be moved forward out of no where and it was very unclear what the readings were and where answers to weekly questions could be found.
Great instructor, loves to play devil's advocate in class discussions and doesn't sugar-coat his opinions; strong personality, you will either enjoy or hate. If you don't participate, attend class, complete the readings, and study consistently, you will not pass. Tough class but fair grading. Will take the time to provide examples when asked.
He is an okay teacher. A little rough around the edges but I guess that is a matter of opinion.
Awful. Dont recommend at all. Avoid.
i was a philosophy major... till i took his class. i urge you all to reconsider before taking his class... awful professor. unorganized, late to respond to emails. inconsiderate.
It was my mistake to take philosophy in the first place, but he made the class that much worse for me. Personally, I didn't learn much from him. His teaching style wasn't my type, therefore I wasn't motivated to listen or participate. He doesn't introduce or explain topics clearly. If you already know a lot of philosophy, you'll probably be ok.
I would not recommend this professor to anybody. Disorganized, rude, and unpleasant.
Teaching style very unclear! No set schedule!
I took his online Phil1101 class and yes he is a hard professor but if you email him with questions he will get back to you within the same day to clear up confusion. Be prepared to read a lot and write a good amount. He will keep you on your toes with assignments. Overall a harder class but a nice professor.
Very few assignments and tests in the class so it's very important to do every assignment and really study. If he feels that students aren't understanding something, he takes his time to try to explain it in a different way. He did let us use our notes on the essay portion of the tests.
The material is math based, so it's challenging to teach. YOU HAVE to go through each chapter in the text and work through the problems. The professor will help you via email and office hours if you reach out to him when you're stuck-- plus he is hilarious! The only downfall is your grade is based on your tests and the final, so no side points.
His teaching style is unique, I never saw anything on the course website in this class. He only taught the lessons in class; so it's understandable if some students had a hard time with him. If you want to actually understand and learn, READ THE BOOK and don't be shy to ask questions. If you ask, he will help. I personally had a fun time with him.
If you take PHIL1101 online, you better check it daily & read it slowly or else youll miss homework! Happened to me twice >:(Mainly because philosophy homework isnt posted on the homework calendar like other classes. I like Professor McCasland because he takes time to do in-person review classes for his online students which is helpful and AWESOME!
Show up, pay attention and engage in class discussion and you will pass this class. Lots of medias used during lecture (handouts, YouTube videos, articles, book etc.) which helps keep the lectures interesting. Mr. McCasland is easy going and the class is graded off a handful of assignments. Tests questions are complex so study concepts thoroughly.
The class is what to expect from a philosophy class. McCasland is a great guy and tries to teach the class the best he can but it gets a little dry at times. When I took his class in the spring we only had 2 tests which you get to take the essays home to work on which was nice. There is also a paper you will have to do at the end of the semester.
I took this course during summer. Usually he assigns a paper and a few exams, but he gave us a gift by eliminating the paper requirement. The lectures can be somewhat dry, but he gives handouts that cover what is in the lecture. The exams are a combination of essay (take-home) and multiple choice. To do well it is important to to study a lot!
Rick doesn't respond to emails and his online class is very disorganized. The syllabus is a mess and his typing skills are pretty bad - his handouts and announcements are constantly littered with typos and omitted words. He does know what he's talking about, though. If you're a grammar nazi like me, don't take his online courses.
He's a good professor but he is brash so his personality isn't for everyone. For logic, the class is HARD. It's not impossible but I think a lot of people going in underestimated the difficulty. Many people failed the class. I ended with barely an A after LOTS of studying. Put in effort and go to EVERY CLASS. 4 tests and a final, that's it.
Save your time and money, don't bother taking Logic at Columbus State. This professor has no interest in doing anything but brag about his life and lecture with very little feedback given and no homework besides high-stakes testing, at which point you'll already be screwed. By far the worst professor I've ever had.
This class is very hard. There were 4 tests and one final. You have to do good on tests in order to pass the class. There are no papers or homework, just tests which makes it harder to pass. The material is very hard and you have to do extra research by yourself and read extra because of the high level of difficulty.
Not only did I send him multiple emails over the course of the class and barely got timely replies, or not a reply at all, this man cannot write proper English if his life depended on it. His readings all felt like they were projecting his own beliefs onto them, and they read almost like something from a Christian philosophy course. Avoid this.
I took Mr. McCaslands class online hoping to learn philosophy, but failed to do so because of the odd workload he provided. Class out of 470 points, 70 for homework and 400 for three tests and final. Biweekly assignments sometimes even skipped weeks with know reason, and no email replys. Easy A if you read everything! Probably is better in person
Just the syllabus and the first assignment provided, his material already projects his own beliefs on topics. Using "lol" and "ALL CAPS" in topic. Scheduled to meet in certain day/time, but no email saying that is not the case. 4 tests being 85% of your grade while saying engagement and debate is important for the class seems contradictory as well.
Rick is the worst professor I have every had. He will ignore you if you email him asking questions. Which you will have to because he doesn't teach the class just assigns reading. And if you do get him to email you he will defiantly put lol in the message. I thought about dropping his class at the first sign of trouble and I wish I would have.
He knows what he teaches, and he teaches it well. A bit lazy, as he copied and pasted things from previous online semesters, which made due dates unclear and stuff. Three tests that made up, basically, our entire grade besides bi-weekly papers you needed to fill out as you read. Definitely read the articles and textbooks carefully, as they help.
This is literally the worst professor I have ever had. He doesn't know proper grammar and will respond to your emails with smiley faces and "lol"s. He isn't professional at all. For this class he will teach you nothing, I only passed because I taught myself out of the textbook. Not like I had any other choice. Sometimes he takes weeks to respond.
His lectures are very clear regarding the material, but you do need to read on your own. Very easy going.
You will either hate him or love him. Not professional but I enjoyed that. His beliefs are easily seen through the way he teaches the class. Class is easy if you attend class and listen/participate. No homework only tests (I like, good for other classes). Jokester but very crude, doesn't always understand students' questions very well.
He understands the material very well. He was able to break down the material in the book for me to grasp and to do well on the tests.
Very fun, engaging professor. His class is never boring, but it is fast pace. I highly recommend taking him if you get a chance to!
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. I believe this Prof is ESL, which sucks because he writes most of his handouts and makes it impossible to read. Most of the points lie within the tests and papers and he doesn't have a very organized BB. Unless you want to spend 30 minutes fishing for due dates and get your emails ignored, please skip this prof.
Doesn't rely to emails, but coursework is easy
I took this to satisfy my math credit and I would highly recommend this course to anyone who struggles with math. He assigns only pages from the textbook that are necessary for the unit, and his only homework was practice problems you email to him. Anytime I was lost or falling behind he would work with me until I fully understood the material.
Very confusing professor to take online. Probably would be a more fun/interesting class in person but I had a hard time finding due dates unless an announcement was posted beforehand. There are no opportunities to actually learn the material besides quick announcements to look at the textbook and super long PDF files uploaded. Very test heavy.
My mistake was not looking at his rate my professor... He is awful online I'm not sure about it in person but he goes weeks without posting on Blackboard and then boom there's a test. this is a reading class... not one lecture. I ended up dropping halfway through it was becoming too difficult to know what needed to be done and when.
Professor McCasland, took forever to answer emails and when he did it was not a lot of help. TONS of reading, but mostly bi-weekly work assigned, he does not give you a course calendar so you will have to check blackboard a lot, not a bad class, very time consuming and kind of hard if you don't understand concepts. There is a 7 page final paper
His style of teaching better suits an in-person classroom than online. He would have disorganized gaps between posts. We would be given questions to answer and have nowhere to submit them for days after. No course calendar. Often, he would post a large paragraph of material and slip a due date inside like, "Test 2 is due Tuesday of next week."
It was unclear when or where assignments need to be turned in. The pacing of the class was all over the place. The class requires a $70 textbook that you'll rarely use, with one of the few times it gets used the assignment refer to a passage that doesn't exist. The material of the class just poorly structured.
His use of Blackboard in the OT version of class is outrageously bad. No use of the Our Classroom function so good luck finding the link you want in the sidebar. The class is only reading the book and tests, I would NOT recommend this for an exclusively online class
a phil major told me that the material we were working on was year three content & was very difficult for an intro class often put in grades & course material late(after saying no late work is accepted) easy grader & when material is posted at the correct time there's ample time to complete assignments hardly used the textbook we were asked to buy
I couldn't be more unorganized if I tried
completely unorganized, takes two weeks to grade anything, tells you that you're gonna need the textbook but you will never use it, is kind of passive aggressive over email doesn't give a calendar for assignments so you have to constantly keep checking. overall its an easy class but this professor is not very good
As a CCP student, this is the worst class I have ever taken. Didn't grade a single one of our 4 EXAMS until day the class ended—when I emailed him about my final grade, not realizing I had done that poorly (not like he left any sort of feedback when grading) he was extremely condescending and dismissed me. Tanked my GPA.
Worst class this semester. Didn't have a dedicated schedule, the class was very disorganized. Terrible for online. All the provided materials and "lectures" were filled with grammatical errors and spelling mistakes. Tests (outside the final) also had the same issue. I would suggest skipping this if you are needing to do philosophy online.
Relatively easy on grading. Poor communication and organization, hard to get ahold of, doesn't always post assignments on time. The class runs on a “tentative schedule” so it's hard to plan for this course since there is no course calendar. Did not use the textbook for the course material so that was nearly $100 that could have been saved.
I took this class as an online summer class and I think my experience could have been better in person. His material seemed more in class focused than online. Overall if your taking his online class I would recommend to switch professors if you value structure and an organized setting. The work assigned however helped understand concepts of PHIL.
Not good at communication, 3 exams in the class all worth 100 points each, the total points for the class is 370 so you have to do good on the exams to pass. Half of the test is an essay the other half is mc, I did my essay last month, and he still hasn't graded it, our next essay is due next week.
