VERY FUNNY AND CRAZY TEACHER....
Rick is a funny guy and a good teacher. If you do your homework, this class is an easy A!
This guy is straight funny. He is a great teacher and I couldn't have imagined taking econ without him! Highly recommended!
Great online instructor! Can't imagine Econ w/out his sense of humor. Willing to help w/questions. Highly recommend!
Rick is funny and cool. If your taking econ 201 or 202 at LCC, I highly reccommend Rick. While not the easiest, he lectures very well and gives you the tools to achieve excellence in his class.
Do not take this class online if you are not disciplined. Prof. Nelson has done a great job explaining economics, but you must work at it.
I never had this teacher for a live class, but he should not be teaching the internet ones. Routinely waited post assignment until midnight when they due at noon. So you had 50 people downloading the same file at the same time on servers that sucked. If
Has an odd approach to teaching but it seems to work. Vodka as a teaching aid, brilliant!
This guy rocks. He has a mullet and he knows his economics. Take this class and you'll learn a lot in addition to a few laughs.
I would recommend Rick for Econ. Very funny guy and his class is structured pretty nicely
He is definitely an entertaining teacher - he keeps you awake. What he teaches is simple, to the point, and clear. He relates well on a personal and professional level and encourages challenges, questions, and involvement. He challenges but is pretty easy.
Good teacher. Keeps your attention, fun guy. Learn and laugh a lot.
Online Class was a breeze. Rick gave enough information to take the tests. Remember to stay on schedule, very important.
Wow! What a guy and cute too!He entertains and teaches at the same time, very agile! Jumps around the class and makes you feel that he is interested in teaching you Economics. I enjoyed his class. I would recommend him. Good class.
Econ is NOT an easy course. His online class was tough but his animations were helpful and he has a sense of humor. He doesn't respond well to emails, few words, lack of explanations but i got thru it.
Econ is a hard class overall. But he puts everything in laymen’s terms, which makes it easier. Do the homework and optional online tutorials and it will help you out a lot with the hard quizzes and exams. All you have to do is show up and study, study, study and you will be fine. I am taking ECON 202 with him next semester.
I took his macro class online over the summer and 3.5, so I actually enjoyed it. All material was very clear, overall just a good experience. Highyly recomended
Mr. Nelson is the best!!!!! he's really nice, great taste of humour (even I don't always get it..) Although there are lots of assignment and reading, but I think it all very useful. His Econ 201 is highly recommended!!
Great professor! Great sense of humor. I have never really understood economics till now. With homework assignments you get credit for it whether it is right or wrong. There are quizzes once a week, they are open note, open book, and you can ask anyone for help except for Mr. Nelson. And test are kinda hard, but as long as you study you will do fine.
Good online class.
Interesting class, hard to follow the lessons Nelson provides. Animations are difficult to go through to find information. Overall I did not enjoy the class and found it hard to understand the material provided. No help reviewing for the tests or quizzes.
This teacher is very good at explaining everything you need to know and does it in a manner that is many times very funny. Weekly home work that is a completion grade, weekly quiz thats open note open discussion, and a few tests. I did not read one page out of the textbook and am on the verge between an A and B+ right now with a couple weeks to go.
I'm not sure of Rick's approach in 2010--but I had him for multiple economics classes in the early 90's. The gentleman knows his stuff, is thorough in his presentation, and entertaining to boot. He made economics INTERESTING--something I never dreamed possible. A consummate pro, and a credit to his profession.
He's awesome. If you want to do good in the class, he will help you get there. He's entertaining, fair and knows his stuff thoroughly. I really appreciate him as a teacher.
Good professor. Organized, prepared, helpful, and humorous. He does have illegible handwriting, sometimes, but you will be able to read three fourths of it.
Good teacher, good guy. He's funny and helpful and actually makes the subject matter interesting. After reading through his animated lectures, you'll be able to rationalize your way through tests. Quizzes were open note, but were annoyingly difficult sometimes. Just do your home work and study up for the tests.
Sweet teacher. Makes economics enjoyable when subjects could be boring. Learned a lot. Open note quizzes could be challenging if you don't have good notes and you never read your notes.
A lot of overhead notes, but does find a way to make econ interesting
Worst class I've ever taken. Rick is a nice guy, helpful, funny but the subject matter was way too theoretical for me. I struggled (along with most of the class) for the entire semester. Avg grade point to date is in the 70's.

I highly recommend this teacher to anyone taking Micro/Macro Econ classes. Econ's a relatively dry subject and Nelson is funny, engaging, & extremely helpful. Just watch out for his quizzes, they're a killer!
Took Rick for 201 & 202 (hybrid though). 201 was great and very interesting. His overhead notes are great and he's great at explaining. 202 is a little more challenging because it was a hybrid. I've heard Jim Luke is better at 202. Just know that you need to do the assignments & quizzes. Review his flash files online to study for tests!
awesome professor. very helpful, clear, his tests are based on the practice tests, his quizzes are harder but there is NO time limit and you can work on it with people, he drops the two lowest quizzes. I took this class and never read the book, I would just always review his slides.
I took it online with him and it takes about a min. of 4 hours a week on the computer doing the work. Overall, Nelson, was a great online teacher, proved all the needed information but sometimes the material can be hard to understand in an online format, in class could have been better.
Don't take Econ 201 with Nelson! Its by far the worst class I have taken. The lectures and assignment as easy but the quizzes and tests are brutal. Average class grade was in the 60s and 70s
Great professor. Lots of notes, seldomly use the book - don't spend the money. Uses many aspects to clarify his points. If you don't pass this course, you're not trying.
He doesn't care if you come to class late or not at all, he puts videos online to help you catch up if you miss a class. He keeps the class very interesting with relating the subjects to life situations. great professor!
Prof Nelson is by the the BEST professor I have had so far at LCC! He is very good at teaching the material that seems to be very difficult in an understandable way. I am just sad that he does not teach ECON202 as well because he definitely made something I feared into my favorite class! HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMEND!
nelson is awesome! hes funny, and explains everything in a really understandable way. i would definitely recommend him!
He was a very funny teacher with little work to do outside of class. However, he does seem to lecture a lot of information at one time which can be over wheleming and make sure you study hard for test and exams, he likes to trick people. Other than that, he was a funny teacher and easy going. But don't wear a Michigan Shirt to his class. lol
Great teacher! Hilarious! Makes the class interesting and fun to be in. MR=MC
Prof. Nelson was awesome. He does give weekly homework, but it is ten questions and they dont even have to be correct. He gives great examples and will make you laugh almost everyday. Tests can be difficult, but he provides a lot of study guides on-line. Definitely recommend!
Professor Nelson was EXTREMELY helpful in this course. There were many ways of course instruction used. As long as class is attended and you are using class time to participate and listen to lecture, it's an easy 4.0.
I DO NOT class online (unless you are already very knowledgeable with economic concepts and theories)!!! I struggled most of the semester with the work-load of the class. I am a 4.0 GPA student and I struggled with this class. Most of online learning tools and videos I found impersonal and boring.
The textbook read horribly (I found at least 15 spelling or grammar errors) and was hard to grasp the concepts. His lessons helped to explain things, but his quizzes and tests were worded like they were almost trick questions. I had no interest in taking this class but it is required for me degree.
I am struggling with this class more than I have ever struggled with a class before. Rick does NOT instruct very well in class, if at all. All his material is either watching youtube videos or using outdated shockwave study materials he created back in the 90s. As of right now, the average mid term grade is 71%. This is due to his "teaching" method
Rick Nelson is a great instructor. The only thing I hated about this course is he is very picky in regards to estimating values. Great personality. It is an easy 4.0 class if you attend class everyday and take notes. DO NOT BUY THE BOOK!!!!!!
This professor is highly recommended. He uses multiple methods to teach instead of teaching one specific way. He does like to show fail army videos, but DOESNT use up any of the class time doing so. Its always as students are entering class. Its a good way to laugh. On a serious note, he knows how to engage students and hes excellent at teaching
In his Hybrid Class he uses most of the time going over assignments and quizzes and only gives you 10-15 minutes at the end of class to take a quiz, which is NOT enough time so you are scrambling to get it done. He also only spends time helping students that are passing and does not offer one on one help to those that are struggling and failing.
Rick is a great instructor. He is a funny guy and also good at teaching. Show up to class, pay attention and take the notes he provides, and it's an easy 4.0. I highly recommend him.
Rick is an awesome professor! He's hilarious and explains everything so clearly that you would have to try to not get a 4.0. Showing up to class is mandatory because he gives quizzes and worksheets that must be turned in weekly. Do not get the text book though! You will not use it. Show up, study hard for exams and you will succeed in his class!
I did the worse I have ever done when I took this class. The book was useless, the animated videos posted were long and boring, didn't receive a lot of feedback from this professor, although he did offer to meet with me but its hard when you work a fulltime job from 8-5. Not all his fault that I didn't do well though.
Great guy, class moves at a perfect pace and the information covered in the previous class is always reviewed briefly prior to lecture. Always goes into an in depth example and takes you step by step when doing economic concepts, varies methods of teaching, some involving student volunteers and surveys and then econ concepts with student data.
Good teacher, explains everything, gives good notes. Test wording is difficult at times. But all your quizzes are open book. He's easy to pay attention to and will answer any questions until you understand.
He's a great guy and tries to make economics as easy to understand as possible. There are 2 tests, 1 midterm, 1 final, 12 open book quizzes and 12 assignments and and end of the semester writing assignment. If you have any questions he will help you until you understand. Make sure you show up to class on time!
Very funny, he likes to hit the whiteboard really hard when trying to make a point and usually hurts his hand in the process. Very clear and interesting to listen to in lecture (sometimes he even gives you candy.) Assignments and quizzes after each unit (12 units.) Quizzes are open book and open to discussion with peers.
Taking this online and during the summer was personally not a good idea for me. A lot of information is packed into a short period of time. The lectures are interactive which is helpful. Assignments and quizzes due weekly. The final exam is over all the material learned during the semester. Only take this class if you have time to spend on it.
He is very good at explaining the material. Also, he is helpful and willing to allow you to work around your schedule if need be. The only thing that wasn't my favorite is that he would sometimes put a trick question on quizzes or tests.
Best professor I've ever had. Show up on time, Read everything on d2l, review his homework assignments/in class quizzes and you will be fine. He's really funny and he sets you up for success. I took this class while attending MSU and it was the best decision i've ever made. If you make a bunch of flashcards you will pass with flying colors!
Professor Nelson is my favorite professor I'v ever had. He has sense of humor and is hilarious sometimes. I am super comfortable with his teaching style-apply to economic theories by using examples. Professor is always patient answering my questions. Attendance is not required, but if you would like to pursue a better grade, pls show up every time.
he is the best professor.
You have to take his class to understand how he is. I didn't like it b/c the Hybrid class involved learning through terrible you tube videos, and "animations". He is "out-there" with his teaching but even though I thought he was kind of weird, when you have a 1 on 1 discussion with him he is serious about making sure you are learning the material.
He is one of the best teachers I have ever had especially for Econ. He is a little intimidating at first but he has great lectures and makes sure you understand everything. Quizzes are open note and you can help each other. Tests are alone but he gives you great notes and plenty of tools to study with! I would take him again if i could!
I took his class online. I'm usually a solid A student. Actually his class was the first B I've gotten since elementary school. I always felt like he was fair. I missed a discussion post deadline and he let me complete it for credit anyways. He is a little old school with his videos and he uses shockwave presentations from 1997 which made me laugh.
Great guy, Professor Nelson was one of my favorite professors at LCC. He made lectures interesting and enjoyable to sit through. I was trying to take his Macro class as well but it got cancelled due to low enrollment. Highly recommend!!!
Homework assignments go hand in hand with his animations. Quizzes are every other week and are open book. He tells you what you need to know for exams and has practice questions. Nelson gives great feedback and tries to bring humor into his lessons.
Just made class fun! Cool as hell guy, no complaints about workload or tests or anything.
Best teacher/professor I've ever had. Knows the subject thoroughly to put it lightly. Energetic and definitely not dull. Translates somewhat thick subject matter simply and clearly as possible. Straight forward and fair. I often look forward to going to class.
Ive heard hes great for in class. His online class was pretty hard if you have never taken econ. he uses these weird animations that are just so ungodly boring to watch. you were allowed 2 hours for the online quizzes and i found myself always using the whole 2 hours because they were difficult. Very graph heavy course.
Good teacher the class was kind of hard but he made it better, very entertaining and enjoyable hes really energetic for a 8am which is nice, if you like the simpsons you will like this guy, would recommend and take again
Worst instructor ever!
I loved this class as an 8am. He brings a lot of energy and will make you laugh. He is a great teacher and makes learning econ fun with his creative problems. The amount of class work is doable and is made very clear how we will be graded. I would highly recommend taking this class!
Professor Nelson is a good professor. He makes class fun and has a unique way of teaching. His tests are hard but if you study the material he gives you, you should do fine. There are in class quizzes that you have to be there for but you get to use your book, notes, and work with other classmates on all the quizzes.
Took this over the summer. 40 point quizzes every week (you get to work w/people & use notes). Worksheets/homework every week that are graded by effort. You will need to put in the work to learn the material. Also he uses lesson plans from 10 years ago on a program that is barely existing. Lots of youtube teachings as well through D2L.
Had him in a 8am, did not make it entertaining at all. Boring lecture almost made sleep every time I walked into this class. However, I tried to give this guy many chances and just did not seem like he really cared much about if a student learned or not. Seem to me he came to get his paycheck and dip. I retook the class with a better prof. no prob
I don't think he trusted his class to study but tbh all his exam material was recycled from years past so why would they? Books cost money & there's reviews and answers all over Quizlet from his material. Often the assignments wouldn't make sense grammatically and he gave little to no feedback. We had no idea what our final GPA was until the end.
Terrible. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS!!
I'm currently taking his class online. This guy doesn't know how to use a computer if it was made after 1999. His lectures have been recycled for the past 20 years and aren't even compatible with current systems. The lectures may make sense if you didn't have to jump through a million hoops just to view them.
His lessons and information are not very helpful when it comes to the exam or any test. He has "animations" as his lessons and they are very hard to access and the copyright on them is old. He does respond fairly fast through emails when you have questions but he tells you the answer and not how to do it. I would recommend picking someone else.
He's an okay professor but the class is hard. Difficult tests that make up most of your grade, online lessons that are almost impossible to access because they were created with old software, and weird deadlines. However, he gives pretty good feedback, provides lots of helpful supplementary videos, and grades the assignments by participation.
Definitely not my favorite professor. He uses animations to teach most of his lessons and they are very outdated and hard to access. He offers no extra credit, and was not super great at explaining things. Homework was pretty easy though, for the most part, quizzes were the hardest. Only one attempt and questions were confusing.
Participate in class and you will have one of the best experiences of any class you take.
Great great great professor. Very interactive which helps you to want to learn more about the subject and actually comprehend what is being taught. He definitely goes above and beyond in really giving you the opportunity to be successful in this class. You won't regret taking a class with him.
He is fine as a person, funny really. But his teaching style is giving links to weird animations made in 2008 that no longer work. He's been teaching since the 80's he says and I think he has just given up now. I wouldn't take him again. One plus is that he gives you two tries on some tests
One of the best professors. Really loved him. Makes some sarcastic jokes here and there but is serious when class starts. Would definitely recommend. Amazing!
Awesome professor. Just don't be shy to ask questions/participate and you'll do fine.
