He is very helpful. He can be a little unorganized at times, but he is very easy. He teaches things well, and makes sure you understand the material before moving on.
Great teacher. Somewhat unorganized. But loves to act things out in class. Wonderful!

I loved this prof. He made me a mixed tape and it had some wonderful music on it. Although I have not had him in years when I ran into him the other day he still remembered me. He made class interesting and a joy to attend.
I loved this guy, he taught the only class that I ever passed at UWW, and I enrolled twice! He was really enjoyable to listen to and is one of the few good memories that I have of the black hole known as UWW.
He is just a really nice guy and he is very knowledgeable. Be warned that you have to do poetry readings and act out stuff but other than that he's great.

Simply AWESOME!!!
He is probably one of my favorite profs so far! he doesnt do tests, he doesnt do books, just handouts and poetry readings. You have to do a 12 page paper but thats required for Eng102 and he's very helpful with it. If you do the work its an easy A
Great guy in class. Very helpful with papers. Highly recommended.
Easy going, easy class, easy A. All we had to do was hand in a weak 20+ page paper and you have ALL semester to work on it. I doubt he reads them anyways. I would suggest him to anyone!
Awesome prof. Instead of having us write our whole research paper, we only had to write an annotated bibliography and the first few pages of the paper we would write if we were going to write the full paper. Other than that, we watched some interesting movies that were pretty cool and we did some skits. Not much poetry, but there was some.
This was the worst class that I ever took and nearly killed my love of english, which is actually my minor. He was really unorganized and kept forgetting to do things for our class because he was also teaching at another school. don't take this if you don't like acting or watching films with subtitles.
Rick is amazing! He is a super fun professor to take. He gets a lot of ideas & changes the stuff for class a lot. Usually to make things more fun & easier on the students. My roommate & I wanted to go to his class every day. He cancelled class like 10 times last semester.
Professor Oehling is a great guy who teaches a great class. I have never been a big English fan but I loved his class. He was willing to make changes to help those who did a good job in his class but still managed to keep others accountable. Great Experience. Highly Recommended.
attendance mandatory, he takes attendance by calling everyones name out individually. Have to buy books which sucks. The books are confusing. But he is a soft grader when it comes to papers. Very understanding of problems if you have one. Very passionate about his class.
Awesome teacher. Show up, participate in discussions, and do the readings and you'll be fine. The books were very long, but discussions helped make them more interesting.
I love this class! I hated English during high school, but this class is great! Be sure to read the books and participate in discussion. He said he doesn't like grading, so just write the papers and you will be get an A or A-. We had one quiz halfway through the first book to see if people were reading. That was the only one. Love this professor!
Rick is a great teacher. He is such an easy grader and there are no test not even a final. He takes too long to hand back papers thought, but you get the opportunity to redo them. The book are a bit hard to read but you do not get tested on it you just have to know enough about the book to write the paper. Take Rick he is awesome!
Great Teacher
He was the best prof! Attend his class, read his books, and talk a lot in class. I loved him, a sweetheart, and an easy grader. Just show up, read the books, and manage to type an essay and you will forsure do well.
he is really nice! very easy class, very easy A. i highly recommend it... he's helpful, enjoys what he does. slightly disorganized. if he sees the class he will not give any quizzes, not even a final, just papers. has a bad taste in movies and books, but he is really easy going and the classes he teach are very worthwhile and will help your GPA!
Probably the easiest class I had all semester. EASY A! Mandatory attendance, but accepts most excuses. The books/movies are strange, but he basically walks you through it all. Overall I suggest taking this professor!!!
Very funny teacher! He kind of looks like a scruffily rat. If you enjoy laughing in class, take him. He makes you read odd books though and he is kinda slow at handing back papers. Overall, I would highly recommend him. Pretty easy grader, and he lets you re-type papers sometimes to improve your grade. Take him!
Just a really cool guy overall. Only assignments were 3 papers from the books that we read (with plenty of extra credit opportunities) and a few extra small things thrown in. Is a bit unorganized at times and will take time to get papers back. But is a very good class to take.
Great teacher i would suggest him to anyone. He is one of my favorite teachers later
Great guy, Great teacher, Great Person. Loves teaching, makes exceptions to the students, tends to push back deadlines. Never wanted to miss a class, the guy will always have a piece of my heart.
Easy A but it gets boring after awhile because you don't do ANYTHING. All you do is read books and write essays. Half the time he runs out of stuff to do and we have to listen to his ODD yet funny stories.
Prof. Oehling was by far the best professor I've had this year. The English Department at UW Whitewater seems to be real good. Almost every class he jokes around. He references one of the novels you read almost once a day. Even though we finished the book 5 weeks ago. If you have him as an option TAKE HIM
I've only been in classes for one week and I absolutely love him as a professor!
This guy is really chill with dead lines, read 2 books watch 2 movies and a short film couple extra credit opportunity. Take Rick if you have the chance cool guy and you will do good. but be ready to read.
incredibly awesome professor. he is a very nice guy and willing to work with students and accommodate to anyone. his interpretations of passages are very interesting and insightful. class is fairly easy and goes by very quick with class participation. TAKE THIS PROFESSOR
He's a great professor! No exams which is great. No quizzes either. I got a 92 on my first paper which I did last minute. 3 papers total and a library assignment. If you want an easy A, take him! He's really funny too, he has like a Jersey accent which makes everything funnier.
He is so funny. I loved going to English this semester because of him. Only 3 papers, he is an easy grader if you come to class and participate a bit. Very fun and the research paper was a breez with him because he lets you do it on anything you want. Some of the books are confusing but he helps you as much as he can.
He is awesome. Best English professor in Whitewater. Attendance is required, but go anyway. It will help you on the papers, and classes are not boring. He loves tragedy, so be ready for some dull book reading. Grades papers fairly and usually allows for correction. Awesome professor!!!
English 102 - Awesome Teacher ! Easy grader, keeps the class involved and interested. You will pass no problem if you go to class.
Attend EVERY class, read the books, write the papers on time and you are good to go. Prof. Oehling is overall the BEST professor I have had a Whitewater. Willing to help and move around deadlines to help out his students. Offers extra credit opportunities as well. If you have the option to take him, take him! I can't say anything about Rick at all!
Rick is seriously one of the funniest people ever. He is so helpful and is crystal clear about everything. You only write 3 papers on 3 books and then 1 paper on a play. He is a fairly easy grader, too. You get graded on your attendance, but going to his class isn't hard to do. Overall Rick is an amazing professor and I would HIGHLY recommend him.
Rick Oehling is a cool teacher, English with him is probably the best option for English teachers. Lots of reading and a few papers, not too difficult, but its an English class. What do you expect! Highly recommend him for English, cool person to get to know for a semester.
He is a very enthusiastic teacher who loves his job and does everything he can to help you. The whole semester we read 3 books and not once did we touch our textbook.
Attending class is good to get all the assignments. His work load is very minimal. Readings are not heavy. He is very considerate and will listen to you. Very helpful and kind. Going to class helps if you need help understanding things. He explains on all the readings. Assignments are super easy.
He is a good teacher, but he NEVER stops talking. It gets very boring. I would not recommend taking an early class time because you will fall asleep.
Professor Oehling is the best professor you could take for english. He talks a lot, but he is really passionate about the subject. You have a lot of readings to do, but the next day he THOROUGHLY goes over it during class in case you missed it. Very helpful and will basically map out your paper for you if youre having trouble. And hes hilarious!!
This was such and easy class! There are not any quizzes, tests, or a final. If you need help he will help you, even with re-writes. There is plenty of time to get assignments done. If you forget to read he talks about what happened during class times. TAKE THIS CLASS!!!
Mr. Oehling is a very good English teacher. He only gives out quizzes if he feels the class hasn't read the material. We read four books throughout his class and wrote a paper on each as well as a few other assignments. He gives out extra credit if you ask and is always there to help.
He is very passionate about the novels that we read. There are 3 novels you read in the semester and then you write a paper on it after finishing the book. Class consist of discussing the novel for the whole period. The class is very boring if you're not into the novels as he talks about them the entire time. He is a very easy grader.
If I get the chance, I will definitely take him again! Super easy class and I liked the books we read,
Rick is an amazing professor. He is really easy going and funny. I loved going to English and I would definitely take him again. You read 3 books during the semester but they're interesting. Rick explains the books thoroughly the next class so if you didn't do the reading, he'll catch you up. You write a couple of really easy papers about the books
Professor Oehling is a really fun teacher! He had us do skits in class to act out some of the scenes in the books we were reading. He's very funny too! Most kids in our class really enjoyed him. He's very understanding and he won't call on you in class if you didn't do the reading or just don't have anything to say. Would highly reccommend him!
Oehling has by far been one of my favorite professors. He is very understanding and helpful when it comes to assignments and papers. We read a book that was pretty challenging at times but he was very helpful and went into greater detail during class. If you keep up with the reading the class is very enjoyable.
Hands down, my favorite teacher of all time. Such a funny, smart, inspirational professor that looks into topics into different perspectives. He is so open to ideas and perspectives, he is fascinated in learning and we only read one novel in the class, and that novel was amazing and so interesting. If I could, I would take him every year. The best!
Best class ever, super easy, you will spend all semester talking about one novel, if you keep up on the reading, or not, you will be fine. Oehling is super nice and funny, he likes when you laugh at his jokes and participate in class. I highly recommend for Eng 101. Only downfall: when you hand in a paper don't expect to get it back for a while...
If an easy A is all you want from your college english experience, Rick is the professor for you. That being said, he utterly fails to meet even the most basic expectations in terms of grading and meaningful feedback. After writing approximately five essays I received a grade on one of them. Rick will not provide feedback, and wont grade essays.
Rick is an excellent english professor, and one of my favorites in college. He is a very nice, laid back guy who does not overload the students. You will read a few books in 101, and write a few papers, but he is a very fair grader. He requires you to attend office hours to get feedback for a few assignments, and gives great feedback for improving.
Rick was a fun/interesting person. The class was boring & we learned nothing. We read 2 books for the entire semester with pop quizzes randomly because he did not believe that people were reading. Hardly gave any instruction on papers, so you have to go in and see him in order to figure out what its supposed to be on. Overall, would not recommend.
He is an easy professor but there is a lot of reading in this course and the reading was not interesting at all. We would spend most of the days in class talking about the reading. There is a research paper we had to do but he helped a lot with it. I would only recommend him if you don't mind reading big books and talking about the books in class
Rick is such a laid back professor. I loved how he graded papers especially, because it wasn't like "does this person do A, B, and C?" It was more like "is this paper strong ?" Made essays a lot less tedious and stressful to write, kind of had some freedom with it. I loved him. Tried to get him for 102 but he filled up. If you can take him, easy A!
Rick is a good teacher, but he can be very disorganized. He had to keep reorganizing the syllabus and didnt give us essay prompts until after the original due date. Hes very interesting to talk to and extremely intelligent, but not very good at keeping up with the pace of the class.
He gives out a lot of papers at once and expects them to be done in such short notice, and he is very unorganized. He had to keep changing the syllabus and pushing due dates back. Sometimes dwells on off topic subjects and wastes class time. Having said that, he is very caring of his students, and his lectures are fun when you participate in them.
Professor Oehling is extremely caring and knowledgable. At times, the lectures got very boring and it seemed more like an art class than an English class. There are a lot of papers in this class on the books you read in class. Overall, a very nice guy and not a bad professor to take by any means.
Oehling is a very laid back teacher who pushes back almost every due date. There's only 3 papers throughout the semester so there is not much homework. Really easy grader, and is very understanding.
He is extremely unorganized and changed the syllabus almost every other class period. We had decent amount of reading material, but never seemed to discuss it in class as we constantly talked about art (I don't know why). He doesn't use a rubric when grading essays, which is super frustrating, but he does allow re-writes on his essays.
A lot of this class will be reading and discussion. You read 4 or 5 books and write papers on almost all of them. With that being said, he is an awesome professor and a big help if you reach out to him outside of class. He's a very passionate teacher and he tries his hardest to make class fun.
Rick is an incredible professor, I had him for freshman english both terms and he was nothing but kind and hilarious. He's a really sweet older guy and if you're struggling with a paper, he'll help you out. He has a genuine love for the books he assigns (especially books by Doris Lessing). If I could I would absolutely take his class again.
I had Oehling for both English 101 and 102. He's a weird combination of hilarious, but also boring. He has a good sense of humor, but his lectures can be very dry, and he picks very boring books. There are lots of opportunities for extra credit, which is really nice. Overall, I would recommend him for an easy A.
Rick is a great professor! Every time I take an English course I look to see if he has a section because he makes class very enjoyable, gives great help and feedback and essays and excepts rewrites so you can boost your grade. He has so much knowledge and wisdom. You will not regard taking a course with him!
Best professor. Oehling cares about his student's success. We had to buy 3 books to read available in the bookstore. We also read non-fiction pieces in class. He offers extra credit on assignments to boost grades. He accepts rewrites on writings. Provides a Calendar with Due Dates & reading days. He allows 4 unexcused absences. Easy A. TAKE HIM!
Very nice professor. Always understanding and a fairly easy grader. Knowledge and really cares about his work.
He's super nice older man and truly cares about what he is teaching. Expects you to read a ton of books for the semester but in reality I read none and still got an A due to him being extremely unorganized and you are only graded by papers and no tests. Does rewrites and no final. He always pushes back due dates and you don't really learn.
Oehling is seriously amazing! He is so funny and enjoyable to listen to. He assigns a decent amount of reading and papers, but none of them are too challenging and he's a very fair grader. He really values the classes' opinion and interaction, regularly trying to adjust the course to make it more interesting. I'd highly recommend taking his class!
I love Rick. He says hi outside of class, and he helps you whenever you need (like three times in a week during non office hours), he's super interesting, he really cares about you, his lectures truly help you understand what is going on, he offered 4 opportunities for extra credit, and a fair grader. My only complaint is his depressing book choice
He isn't accessible outside of class. Says he will answer his email and doesn't. Isn't organized for class. The class is easy but I wouldn't take him as a professor again. You watch movies in class that have nothing to do with class.
Rick Oehling is a really nice guy, but this class is a waste of time. I didn't learn anything. The class consists of him talking about the book you're reading for an hour. He grades attendance, but there is no reason to show up to class. There's only about 3 graded papers, and he doesn't grade until the end of the semester. Easy A, but so boring.
Dr. Oehling is a very understanding professor. This class was very discussion heavy, but expect mini homework assignments and many papers. He gives you the opportunity to raise your grade and encourages students to seek him after class.
He's a good professor. A little chaotic in his methods (we bounce between topics and assignments a lot between classes) but it is clear he is extremely passionate and is able to convey his decades of knowledge to the class. The virus kind of threw everything into a mess with most classes, including this one. Sad to miss in person. 2 novels to buy.
Rick is a great person. Teaching wise, he was unorganized and seems to procrastinate on grading. He offers enough extra credit to raise a letter grade or so, but I didn't know I needed to do that to get an A over an A- because he had so few grades in.
It doesn't help that this is online. Lots of people did not participate in discussions which was sad. It was very disappointing to see him ask us questions, only to have the same 3 people answer him. He's a really good teacher and tries to make it fun. If you take him, try to participate. People used to leave when he turned on powerpoints online :(
Professor Oehling is amazing! I would recommend taking him if you're able to read longer books and keep up with readings. There won't be any quizzes as long as your class some-what participates. There aren't many assignments and he ends not giving more then 2-3 papers. He is a bit unorganized, but will give many extra credit opportunities.
Professor Oehling was great! Expect to read two longer books. This class has 2-3 papers, a few online discussion posts, and many easy extra credit opportunities. Oehling is a fun and VERY laid-back professor. He is somewhat disorganized which results in a handful of extended deadlines and him canceling a few assignments to the benefit of students.
Makes lectures very fun by telling a handful of personal stories/experiences that relate to whatever topic he is talking about. Coursework is very easy; only had to write two essays.
I had Rick my first semester, he grades very easy and is very lenient with all assignments. If you put in effort there is no reason to not get an A.
Professor Oehling is very kind and lenient with his students. I am someone who struggles with reading but after talking with him I was able to develop habits and methods that helped me. My final grade in this class was above 100, if you show up to class and you put in any effort you will get an A.
Professor Oehling is a very caring and expressive professor. He keeps class interesting and wants every student to do their best.
This was my second semester having Rick and he is amazing! There are small research assignments and 2 papers, which were less than 2 pages each. Rick is a caring person and understanding. He will go out of his way to help students and also a really easy person to talk too. He does not always follow the syllabus and ends up taking assignments out.
Professor Oehling is a nice guy but his class was very boring. There was one big book to read for most of the semester, and he spent the 75 minutes of class talking about it. Most people spent the class looking at their phones, but he never seemed to mind. Attendance is mandatory and your grade comes from a few papers that should get you an easy A.
He is a good professor, but I felt like going to class was useless. He was very helpful with how to write the papers. Don't have to read look up summary and be fine. Had to write a 16-22 page journal paper. Will move due dates and give you many resources, but feels like he treats you like children who can't do anything. analysis poetry and art.
He gives the most boring lectures on the planet. Took him to a pop culture class and we did nothing that actually related to the topic of the class. He does not respond to emails and is a stickler on attendance.
Have him for Eng110 pop culture and he's graded nothing and it's now finals week so that's a bit annoying; he is offering us some extra credit instead. Some assignments are easy and some are confusing/lots of work. He's nice to talk to but he doesn't respond to emails in my experience. He seems very disorganized but at least he accepts late work.
In my experience I thought he was a nice guy but that doesn't make up for his teaching. I like him but respectfully he is very bad at grading in an orderly fashion, I understand that he teaches many other classes but it just seemed like he was making excuse after excuse for not grading assignments. But overall nice guy interesting topic.
The reference goes like this- Professor Rick is like Jules Wendall. Super caring, and super exciting to be around, but his class drags on a little while like the book THEM. My favorite quote he taught was "Fire burns and does its duty" This quote has stuck with me after the class and I hung it on my dorm wall. He has so much knowledge about Joyce.
Rick tries his best to help anyone who wants it. He's accessible, friendly, and will push back due dates if enough people are struggling. The workload is very uneven, though. You might have just a dozen pages to read one week, then two essays due another.
If you take him get ready to read a lot, have a ton of discussion boards that he doesn't always announce he posts, and have nothing but one thing graded until the end of semester. He also talks so much about the most pointless things.
Rick is a really nice guy and super eccentric in his classes. Does take forever to grade assignments though like until the last second of the semester. Attendance is MANDATORY but assignments are really easy and he's a generous grader. He cancels assignments and class often. Overall he's pretty goofy and spends class talking about random stuff.
You can definitely tell that he knows a lot about what he teaches. Class is usually a lecture and he will try to make you think deeply about the books. There is a decent amount of reading to do but the work is not bad. There are usually a weekly discussion assignment on chapter readings from the 2 books with a few other assignments throughout.
He's so much fun!!
He is such a good person. The conversations were not always on topic with the unit we were learning, but it was mostly just reading old novels. I enjoyed the books we read and the assignments were easy. In total, this course has ONE essay, a couple of short reflections, and a few discussion boards.
If you don't like writing papers, then take Professor Oehling. This course was straightforward. We read two books and had discussion boards on them each week, along with 2 or 3 research assignments throughout the semester and a final synthesis paper for the final. His spouse got cancer this semester, only reason he couldn't grade things on time.
Takes a long time to grade, but hes a nice guy overall
A caring, passionate teacher who just wants students to enjoy learning. Not a ton of writing to do, in fact the workload was very manageable. He made us read a lot, but some of the books were interesting so I didn't mind too much. He took a long time to grade, but I believe his partner was having health issues so he gets a pass. Highly recommend!
I had to switch to online half-way through the semester and he did absolutely nothing to help me. He hasn't answered any of my emails, he did nothing to help accommodate for my injury, and it is the week before finals and he hasn't graded anything from the semester. Would not recommend, find a different prof.
Rick is such a sweetheart. He cares for his students and his stories are amazing. He grades a bit slow but that's the only concern with him.
Professor Oehling is a caring, passionate teacher who makes the class enjoyable. The workload is manageable, and he is understanding when it comes to due dates. Using resources like ChatGPT and unstuck study for study prep was super helpful.
He talks A LOT for lecture, which made it hard to stay awake but meant he went through the books we read thoroughly. He would randomly talk about paintings occasionally (he's an art major) and our final had to do with a painting. He's super funny. He just wants you to write authentically, so he doesn't care about your writing being "perfect".
Attendance is mandatory (but only harms if you miss, you get no points for showing up). Assigned 14 assignments and only graded ONE by finals week. Just lectured at us (encouraged participation but did not require it). While he is a very nice and encouraging professor, his English 101 and 102 classes made me dread my favorite subject.
PARTICIPATE IN CLASS.Rick is a fun professor, the class was extremely digestible. The books in class were easily explained to us each week so if you aren't the best reader you can still understand it.He's super easy going and lots of fun to talk to.I wanted his class next semester but the slots all filled, if you've got one make sure to participate!
Rick is such a goofy guy, he would be a great art professor because that is all that he talks about. His lectures are so boring and are draining. He barely talks about the books he assigns so its pretty easy to get away with not reading them. However, he does post A LOT of essays and long answer questions. No exams or quizzes at all
Rick is a pretty good English professor, but he definitely could be better. By the time finals rolled around, he had only one thing graded. It's been a week since finals, and I still don't have my final essay graded. Not only that, but he is also very lecture-heavy, which can be very draining at times. He also talks a lot about art.
