He makes class really interesting and fun!
He makes class interesting and fun!
His clas was very interesting.
One of the few classes I enjoyed going to. He's hilarious and has an interesting way of teaching. If he says "Check this out ... " he'll go off on a tangent that usually takes the whole class time. I wish I could take it again.
Great teacher! He makes class enjoyable. You find yourself looking forward to class.
He's an awesome teacher! I definitely recommend taking him; even if it's only for an elective. His crime in america class was so much fun. He's very relaxed and easy going.
This was a great class, everything has happened to him personally and he loves to tell about it. It's pretty easy and he gives extra credit if there's a lot of students missing.
Very funny. Has the class in stitches. He should take his class on the road to nightclubs. He's that funny.
he is a really good teacher..makes class worth going to. tells a lot of really good stories. highly rec. him
This guy's awesome! He give out loads of extra credit, which is good because each exam is worth 1/3 of the final grade. He made this one of my favorite classes yet. Good stories, showing the relevance of the material. He's a good guy!
He is really fun to watch because he has nervous twitches and strange mannerisms. He is the nicest guy in the world and an AWESOME teacher.
Great teacher! Funny and exams are pretty easy.
what an awesome prof!! loves to tell stopries in class that are related and sooo funny...i can't wait to take another one of his classes~!!!
Rick was a great professor, made sociology fun and kept me awake in class for three hours straight!
Lectures are interesting and deep. People say to take him because he is a joker, but he is also a pessimist and his predictions about the future are logical and scary.
Dr Phillips is one of the best teachers I have ever had. He empathizes with students and has a genuine care for their problems and the fact that they have very little time.
Rick is a great professor. most of the time, the three hours went by fairly quickly. he actually made sociology really interesting. if i was staying at UNF, id definitely take another of his classes.
Awesome professor. Funny and made class interesting. Exams are very predictable.
Such a fun class. I started out skipping it until I went and realized how fun it really was. I learned a whole lot about stuff I catually cared about and could use in life. Very fun teaching, amusing, and highly recommended.
He is a great guy. His classes are fun. He tells alot of personal stories that relate to what he is talking about. You will actually enjoy going to class.
Good teacher.. funny as hell. Discussions always go over time. Lectures are interesting. Take good notes. Couple quizes. 2 Tests. TAKE GOOD NOTES! Ask about his puppy!! Talks constantly about his spanish wife. Nice guy.
Very funny and liberal.

TOOk him Twice because he's that GOOD!! Very interesting and fun.
great guy
This class was very interesting. Great teacher. Tests come mainly from lecture with minimal from book. Enjoyed the class more than I expected I would. I would definitely take another class from him again!
Even though it is not his primary field, he did an excellent job teaching the class. He had speakers and videos which helped clarify the material. He tried much harder to do a good job and make the class interesting than the regular CJ professors. HIghly recommended.
He hands back tests and papers very quickly, which is nice. He is down to earth and not full of himself like some other professors.
Logic is a hard class, but Rick makes it so much easier than it seems. He's a wonderful and funny techer, and has LOADS of fun things to use as examples. I wouldn't have taken this class from anyone else.
Hillarious!!! Lectures were fun and clear, and went by quickly. Very helpful in and out of class. Tests were handed back the next day! I am definately taking another class with him....he's my favorite teacher at UNF. What a great guy!
awesome teacher. he is so funny and class is always interesting. made me want to go to class. just show up and do the reading. taking him twice, i highly recomend him. great, great teacher and too cute!
tough subject, great teacher. so funny, and very helpful. makes a really boring topic into a fun class.
He is an awesome teacher! The best I've had at UNF. He has a way of explaining complex ideas with such clarity. He is very understanding and helpful. I love his comments and stories...makes the class fun!
Knows the Bible better than your minister and likes to quote scripture to make his points. Very funny and laid back. He is never seen in public without a Diet Coke in his hand. Has goofy nervous tics that are actually kind of cute. One of the best teachers at UNF.
awesome teacher, hes a lot of fun and easy to learn from. has a cool way of looking at the world and is pretty funny. TAKE THIS CLASS!!!
Awesome teacher! It was not hard to go to this class because the lectures were great! he is very relaxed. so relaxed that he sometimes teaches in his socks! I was always interested in what he had to say so it made the class easier. tests are easy and I just loved it! take this class with him if you can! you won't regret it!
Even though its a****ty class, Phillips is da man. He makes the class as interesting as possible with jokes and explains things very clearly. Definitely would recommend him, especially for this hard as hell class.
He was a cool teacher. He mad class fun
VERRY FUNNY! and excellent prof! he was clear, concise, and entertaining
His class was SO much fun this summer. I had a great time in his class. He related his lectures to things going on in 2005 which made facts easier to remember. His tests are really easy too. Straight from the lectures. Rick is a funny guy and tells it like
I love this guy! I had him over the summer for Intro. to Sociology and although it was a pain to read that damn book before each test, he made that such an awesome class. He is hilarious, he makes great points, he's honest, tells funny/great stories from his life, and I love his caffiene addiction. So far he is my favorite professor @ UNF.

he is an alright teacher but can be harsh sometimes with grading
The BEST teacher at UNF!!! He is very intelligent, entertaining, and I actually learned something!
Hardest class I've ever taken, but also the most interesting. Two huge, backbreaking essay tests based almost entirely on lecture, but it's the huge paper at the end that does you in. Not recommended for anyone but seniors or A-student juniors. As a teacher, excellent. Wish there was more time for discussion in class though.
Dr. Phillips is funny and tells a lot of interesting stories!!! The only downside of class were the long weekly readings. The tests were a little difficult but if you study you should be ok. He gives extra credit for attendance so go to class.
Rick Phillips is the man. I left his class feeling enlightened. One of the best teachers and classes I have ever taken, and that is not an exaggeration. Tests are totally fair
Excellent professor, totally recommend this class! However, the only real assignment for the class is the paper at the end, and if you don't write it as he assigns sections (outline, first draft, etc), you won't do well in the class.
The hardest class I've ever taken, but also the most interesting! Weekly quizzes on the (boring) readings count for 35% of your grade, so do the readings. 2 tests that are completely essay, & it'll take the entire three hours to complete; very hard, mostly lecture. Big paper at the end that bends you over. :( Awesome prof, though! Take him!
Lots of time and work needs to get through the class in general. He tells you what he wants and goes step by step. He is direct with his critiques but he wants you to do well. Take him for this class!
I took this during the summer, and it was too much info and too little time. He didn't make us buy the textbook, but also wasn't great about getting the online text up in time for us to read them. He is a very interesting lecturer with views that I found much different from the majority of the Sociology faculty.
He was not a good professor. He did not seem to care about the students, only himself. He was not clear and did not teach how to do papers. He didn't teach anything. If you can take someone else, do so. He did less teaching and more hands on. How can that help?? Don't believe the hype. He started out with 30 students, end up with maybe 10.
This professor expects a lot when it comes papers, but he is there to help his students.
He is a great teacher and is really helpful if you take the time and go to his office hours. There were quizzes on the readings every week so reading is necessary. Study hard for the tests. He does curve if people do not get 100% of the test.
Not an easy A. I learned a lot and he will help you if you see him during office hours. No attendance policy but pop quizzes on readings so you have to go. Nice guy.
In the land of academia, where egos and superiority complexes abound, and professors get off on making students feel inferior, Rick Phillips is a breath of fresh air. Your college experience won't be the same w/out him even if you aren't a soc major. He is self deprecating, witty, and knows how to inspire & motivate.Other profs should take notes.
great teacher! lectures can be boring but the class was great. quiz every week but they are preety easy if you read. very informative class.
GREAT teacher! He was the first teacher I had in college and becuse of his class I am now a Sociology Major. He knows how to relate all of the material to real life to help you understand. He gives extra credit to those who show up when a lot of people don't come and he curves all of the tests if no one got 100.
Excellent Professor! He is easy to follow and interesting to listen to- he applies each theory to real life situations which make ecerything so much easy to understand.
great! makes class intresting & relatable! gives extra credit if you're there sometimes. material was easy if you read & listen. loved his class!
Rick is the coolest teacher in the entire world. He will make you laugh constantly and you will definitely learn things along the way. You will want to be his best friend. He is amazing and the class was a snap just by going and listening to him, which you will LOVE to do. Take him if you can, I plan to again!!
great teacher! but phillips will help you!you have the chance to turn in your assignments for a review prior to turning in the final copy let me give you some advice DO IT i got a b in the class but its not easy takes ALOT of your time but if u stick with it and dont hold off til last minute you will do great
OMG! Greatest teacher EVER! Funny as hell and super nice and smart! Take his class you wont regret it.
Currently in his deviance class. Really interesting course. I have taken Phillips for Theory, Religion, and Junior Seminar, and his Deviance class is one of the most interesting courses to me. He is a hard grader on papers, in deviance we didn't have a paper though. READ in order to pass quizzes.(That means coming to class). Phillips is hilarious.
He's funny, I'll give him that. However, I rarely felt the need to go to class because simply put, it felt like a waste of time. If you do the readings you'll pass. This was an elective for me though, if you are into Sociology and/or Criminology maybe you'll get more from him than I did.
Probably one of the BEST teachers I've ever had. His lectures are so funny, and it's easy to make him go off on random tangents. Hopefully i'll be able to take him again!!
Definitely one of the best professors I've ever taken. He is very knowledgeable about the courses that he teaches. His lectures are organized and clear. You will learn so much and he is so funny. It relates the material to current events so it's easier to comprehend. Absolutely try and take him!
i loved this mans class! not only were the topics incredibly interesting i learned do many thought provoking things and he is just such a great teacher. he always has a diet coke in hand and carries around a bookbag. he's also got this adorable twitch
i loved this mans class! not only were the topics incredibly interesting i learned do many thought provoking things and he is just such a great teacher. he always has a diet coke in hand and carries around a bookbag. he's also got this adorable twitch
he's so funny. i learned so much from his class. he gives random extra credit, study guides, and if you read the book and come to lectures you will ace the tests. he communicates and relates well with students. will talk about everything from drugs to Mormonism. wish i could take another class with him!
This dude sucks. He is so sacastic. Could care less about students passing. Start off with 40 students end with 15. You will learn more about his mother in law and kid then anythign relating to Logic. Exams are 10 questions. Quiz everyclass so in detail you wont get the answer right. DO NOT TAKE HIM!!!
Don't listen to the guy below me. Rick is an awesome professor. He is very knowledgeable in this field, which is obvious in his lectures. He does give quizzes every class, but they are only difficult if you're lazy and haven't read the readings. This is my 3rd and unfortunately last class I'll have with him. Completely recommended!!!
Phillips is an awesome professor. Extremly knowledgeable about religion but does give random quizzes. If i could take him again i would. Would think twice about taking him if you are deeply religious and easily offended about it
Loved his class. He is so funny and his lectures are informational and entertaining. The class is not an easy A but, his tests are easy if you pay attention in class, and the quizzes are simple if you've done the reading. I would take more classes with him if i wasn't graduating. Love this guy!
Rick is great, extremely bright, fascinating and incredibly interesting. i would take every class he teaches if i could. he is very fair and also demanding. do the work and stay on top of it -- if you don't understand: ask! he's a brilliant communicator.
Very funny down to earth. Tauhgt and explaind material well. Was interseting to listen to and arrived on a timely manner, he allowed students to be late, but didn't punish for it.
TAKE HIM!!Easily my favorite prof at UNF. I've learned more in his intro class (practical and out-in-left-field material) than I've learned in my other three classes combined. So, so funny. Taking him again next semester and whenever else I can after that :)
Awesome professor!! You MUST work extremely hard to get a good grade - no slacking. He knows if you try or not. LOTS of readings and some hard to understand, but go to him if you are having a problem. He will help you. He is funny and keeps the material interesting. Best professor I've had at UNF. Don't take this class in the 3-hr. slot.
GREAT professor! YES you should go to class! If you go to class and listen to what he talks about and breeze over the readings you will be fine on tests, at least I was. People found it to be challenging but that is because they never came to class. He gives extra credit at times for attending. He is funny and easy to listen to, class wasn't boring
GREAT TEACHER!!!!! HIGHLY RECOMMEND FOR ANY CLASS! TEACHERS AND STUDENTS RECOMMEND HIM! :)
Took him for Intro to Sociology, so it was a big lecture class. His lectures are really interesting, and he makes a lot of jokes. Got me really interested in Sociology. No textbook, but he put readings on Blackboard. Attend class and read and there will be no problem at all. Also gives lots of extra credit for attending class.
Alot of long, and sometimes useless readings, but overall easy class. Tests were fairly easy if you read and came to class. He gives away extra credit just for showing up. Not really sure I'd say he is a qualified professor though, he mostly taught his favorite subjects, rather than Intro. to Soc. Rabbit trails and crazy, pointless stories.
Amazing, great teacher fun in the classroom not terrible
Loved his class, he keeps it interesting and doesnt require a book. He's really funny so it's easy to stay focused.
One of my favorite professors I've taken. In his Deviance course, he doesn't require a textbook because he feels the industry has a monopoly on books and over-charges for them. Lectures can be off-topic slightly, but still very interesting. A lot of reading on blackboard. Very nice and intelligent professor. Highly recommended!!!
Easy going professor.Tests are essays only, questions hard to interpret what he's asking. One question quizes before every class to see if you read the assignment. Not an easy class because textbook is not easy to comprehend.Starts strong with statistics but gets better. Hang in there it's mandatory and he's the best professor for the course.
Had all this guy's classes. The smartest sociology professor by far. Strong opinions but respects those that disagree. can be forgetful and disorganized but makes up for it by being a super nice guy.
Dr. Phillips is the best professor at UNF. I take every class I can with him. His easiness level depends on the class; he's more firm in mandatory classes such as Logic, but with electives he lets the class decide what they want to learn a lot. There are a lot of readings, but you can get by without them sometimes. He tries to make everything fun.
By far my favorite professor. He has opinion but doesn't turn down others opinion. Very funny. There are a lot of readings but all of them are on the exams so don't ignore them.
Rick is by far my favorite professor! I love his sense of humor! Doesn't require a book, yet manages to explain lectures thoroughly and keeps them interesting. There's a quiz each class based on online readings (5 easy questions, if you read of course). As long as you take notes on lecture and read, there should be no reason to not pass with an A
He is my favorite professor at UNF! Lectures are always interesting and funny, which made me actually look forward to going to class. Lots of reading, short quizzes, and 3 exams (multiple choice). No papers or projects. Gives extra credit too. Definitely take him!
Love Dr. Phillips. Love his lectures. His lectures are so interesting, I hate it when it's over. Tough tough class, but he goes above and beyond in providing his students with plenty or resources. Attendance is mandatory for passing, but not for grading. His lectures are so awesome, I'm taking another class with him, just for fun.
Knows. His. Stuff. He gives pop quizzes to make sure you have done the reading, but if attendance is low he will just have you sign a sheet for pop quiz points. He is a very very smart professor and obviously likes his job.
I am taking a once a week 3 hour lecture class with this professor. If you miss class or don't read the online readings you definitely get behind. If you read the readings and went to class you pretty much do well on the quizzes and tests.
Very funny professor. Alot of reading. This class was very interesting because of his sense of humor. Very easy going and easy to talk to. Read the material and and you should be fine.
Hands down my favorite teacher. He has a very dark and witty sense of humor that makes the class so much fun. However, if you are deeply religious he may offend you because he heavily studies religion and incorporates it into class. But an amazing teacher and uses personal stories as examples. I would take him again in a heart beat.
Four grades: three exams, one paper. No textbooks. All PDFs provided via Canvas. Super funny. Doesnt keep you for the whole class if the material was covered for the day. One of the best sociology professors at UNF.
The way he teaches is amazing. I wish I took him earlier so I could have taken more of his classes! Hands down best professor Ive had in the 4 years Ive been at UNF. He does not read off of PowerPoints, something any student can do at home. He talks about his subject, hes very passionate and actually makes you understand the subjects and topics.
He made soc theory extremely interesting! Although he only really covers a handful of theorists (Marx, Durkheim, etc). His tests are straightforward and if you go to class, you'll do fine on them. There are weekly quizzes on the readings which are a pain, but not terrible. If you put in some effort, this is not a hard class to get an A in.
He had good intentions but he shouldn't teach summer courses. He was rude about our capabilities, and had outrageous requirements to "prove" that our work was worthy of credit. He hates that 6 week classes are offered for 3 credits; well, if you don't like it, don't teach it. The university thinks it's doable, so I don't understand his issue.
I've taken every class Dr. Phillips has offered and he is one of the most consistently good professors I've had. Very lecture heavy, but so entertaining. Readings are long but helpful to understand the kind of heavy material. Tests are never too hard, but require some studying. Deviance and religion classes were better (easier) than logic or theory
He supports student athletes he gets what athletes are going through. He is nice for the most part but will get mad at class if people dont read or come to class. He is not political and seems neutral on politics and does not take political stands on issues or criticize anyone for what they think about politics. Take him.
Great professor. Very funny and tries to make his lectures fun. This class only has 4 grades and those are the 4 exams he gives. Exams are not hard but you have to read the assigned readings and pay attention to lectures because little things he discusses in class could be on it. Multiple choice and a few short response.
Awesome professor! He is very passionate about sociology and is willing to help outside of the classroom. 10/10 would recommend him!
rick phillips is the best. he's super funny, class will never be boring; but he also knows the material really well and explains complex topics well. he does do pop quizzes, so try to keep up with the assigned readings. overall, super easy course load.
insane amount of reading. short time limit on exams which gives you only one minute per question. A lot of trick questions and no study guide provided. Three exams worth 50 points each while the discussion boards are worth only five. If you don't do well on the exams (most people in the class didn't) it will be impossible to get an A in the class
My all time favorite!
Just a very nice guy who likes students and it really shows. Just the facts with this guy. Not a lot of heavy politics in his class and that was a nice break for me. The lectures are interesting and a 3hr night class goes by fast. Easy if you read and come to class.
Prof. Phillips was a good professor, his lectures are interesting. However, his tests do not match up to the material at all! Studied for hours and still could not manage to get higher than a 70 on his exams. The only good thing about it, he does not fail students. There's a short paper at the end of the semester but it's quick and easy.
He is a very good professor nice and easy going. He does put time in his lectures and makes class interesting. I am taking him again.
Professor Phillips is an engaging lecturer who makes sociology interesting. The class is straightforward if you attend and do the readings. Unstuck study was a big help for exam prep alongside the course materials. Would definitely take him again.
There are a lot of readings, but most of them are easy and fairly short. The pop quizzes and exams are easy if you do the readings and attend the lectures. Rick is hilarious, and I always look forward to class. He's also a fast grader. My only complaint is that he easily gets sidetracked by student questions.
One of UNF's great professors. No one is better at explaining complicated ideas. Mostly he just talks but he has good lectures and uses powerpoint well. I also had him for religion and that is his study area. As a psych major I was surprised by how well he mixes sociology and psychology in the class. Take him!
Rick is a great professor, especially when it comes to engaging students in his lectures. I took Deviance and Social Control, where we cover the most depressing and heinous things humans can do to one another, and I still laughed in every class. All exams are completed via Scantron and a short written essay.
