Good teacher, tough subject (Calculus I). Writes legibily, explains material well, but gives wickedly evil exams. Grades are based on 5 exams (100 pts ea.)+(100pts Homework)+(100pts Quizzes)+(200 pts Final) and that's it. Avoid if you're a bad test-taker.
He's a teacher who truly wants you to learn. If you have any questions about the material he'll more than happy tp help you. His tests are difficult but hey, If you study and do the homework you'll be fine.
Rick Serpone is one of the best math teachers there is in my opinon. He is fair and tells you exactly what you need to know for tests. Toward the end of the semester he even has extra credit (10 pts.) on his regular tests and 30 pts on the final. He doesn't drop tests or anything though so you have to perform on all tests. Excellent teacher.
I loved this teacher. For having to have this class every day, he didn't make me dread coming every morning! He was quick and to-the-point with everything. Take this class with him!
He is very friendly and teaches!!!! But his tests are hard. But I passed the first time, and I hate math and tests!!
he was very easy but class was super boring.
Great teacher who is clear in what he expects of you and how he describes the material. He grades fairly, ie gives you the points you deserve and nothing more. I studied hard and got an A, just what anybody should expect from higher math.
Great Teacher. Explains everything really well and is easy to reach to if you have questions. Gives detailed examples as to whats on exams and gives a lot of extra credit. Recommended take for MAT 220.
A gentleman and a helpful teacher. However, the tests and quizzes are extremely difficult. Only the math whizzes can earn an A and passing is another story. I would find another school for mathematics as the reputation is that ASU is easier than Mesa CC.
Summer: extra credit for homework, but beastly exams from even and odd questions from back of the ch. (the tuff ones). Take TIME and do all the H/W + even questions also and you should score high. be prepared for exams that feel like battling a lion(2 hour exams) . Unless you are a good test taker, NOT recommended.
GREAT PROF!!! Clearly explains material and works with you. Do the homework assigned and pay attention in class and you will be fine! He pulls questions directly from the homework and puts it on the test, so make sure you understand the homework. Most people that fail this class don't do the homework, so yeah take the hint.
Very smart extremely difficult
This prof. is a good guy, but rushes through the material, gives a million tests and doesnt take the time to teach you. Not to mention he is litearlly deaf, and answers almost no questions. If you do take his class, do the homework which he never collects or you will quickly watch your grade fall.
The absolute worst math teacher i have ever had he goes extremely fast and doesnt really wait for questions you dont get graded on anything else except test . I highly highly recommend to not take this teacher!!!
this teacher knows calculus but his tests are designed to trick you,he loves logs and the number e and he will make you seem like no matter what you do and study for,you will never be properly prepared.his tests are long
Very good teacher. Even when we weren't going over the stuff that I already learned, in the way that he presented the topics made it very easy to comprehend and I picked them up in a snap. I found the tests exceptionally easy and I usually stink a tests! Never studied once and I never failed a test.
Serpone is great, lectures are clear and concise. He doesn't collect homework, but will quiz on assigned exercises about once a week and the tests are very similar to the quizzes. Saves about ten minutes each class to go over homework and answer any questions.
I enjoyed being in this class. It's a fast paced class that will not bother with most of the review of Pre-Calc and Trig. If you know the stuff then you will do great in this class. As far as grades, tests and quizzes are the only thing he grades. He gives excellent opportunities for extra credit and he is willing to help anyone who asks for help.
Mr. Serpone was an excellent math teacher. He explained things extremely well and went slow enough for the dumbest in the class to catch up if they so desired. He was also very cheerful and pleasant. He was willing to go over the same problem more than once for students who weren't getting it.
EXCELLENT teacher. He was amazing at teaching calculus and in my opinion, should come to U of A and teach the calc teachers there how to teach decently. He teaches with clarity, but make sure you do your homework and ASK QUESTIONS!! He goes over everything that you ask him to and gives really good hints on what he puts on the exams.
One of the best teachers ever! If you do the homework and study a bit before the tests you'll have no problem passing it. He is very helpful and makes everything so easy to understand. I would definitely take his class again(:
Great Professor. Nice, easy going, didn't mind questions being asked, reviewed the difficult concepts many times, and answered every question. Left a chunk of the class period to go over homework that was hard, SO DO YOUR HOMEWORK.
Very knowledgeable, explains notes in great detail, gives lots of examples, offers extra credit opportunities, good personality
Haha was looking up and this guy won the Charles Wexler math teaching award in 1983 from ASU crazy. Wonder what happened he doesn't teach there anymore. Anyway I think for many students first getting into higher math classes this guy seems hard because he's first teacher who will push you but I realize now this guy's not that bad if you work hard.
Awesome teacher!!
Honestly, I am not a good math student, but i study hard and get A's. I did until I took this class. I was in his office most days after class and still took the W. IF you are good at math TAKE HIM, if you aren't AVOID HIM. great for engineers, not pre-med students
Mr.Serpone is by far the best professor I've had. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!! I took him for my math 122 and loved it. If anyone had any questions he would help them and make sure they understood it. He took the time to make things clear and reviewed as a class for everything that would be on a test. Really cares for the students success. Great teacher!
Dr. Serpone is a really good teacher. He really cares about the students and shows everyone what they need to know. This class is not easy. Half the students were left in his summer school class (really fast paced). Also, sometimes, class concepts may be confusing but he's always available for help for anyone who does not quite understand.
Awesome teacher. Knows his stuff and really has a passion for what he does. Very pleasant and respectful.
This professor is a good man, he cares about students' success however he went too slow. I was too bored, for the most part I payed attention but there was no reason to because i knew the material already. Of course i only made it through 3 days before I dropped his class because I could not help but feel like it was too low of a math class. Even when I tried to answer a question he asked to the class, he would not let anyone finish their answer before he told the class the answer himself.
go for tutoring because you won't understand him because his tests are really hard
This teacher is the best math teacher I have ever taken. He explains the material very well and goes over homework in class. Opportunities for extra credit. If you do the homework the tests will not have anything you havent seen before. Cares about the students. The only bad thing is that he doesnt teach past MAT220 anymore.
The best way to pass Serpone's class is to do every homework problem he recommends. He is a very good teacher. Ask him which sections are on each quiz & test, and do those homework problems until you know how to do every single one. You'll notice that his quizzes & tests ARE the homework problems with slightly different numbers. "Just trying" = C.
This man is a great teacher. I hated math and got an F last semester with a different teacher. With Serpone I got a high B and I actually like math now!!! Take him
Yes, 95% of the questions on the tests come from the homework; but his grading is so subjective and erratic that you'll never know what you're going to end up with, even if you know the material. Your grade is derived only from quizzes and tests and a little extra credit. Past that, he's a decent instructor.
He goes a little fast for some while lecturing, but it's clear that he knows what he's talking about. The guy is also funny as heck. His test come straight from the HW and he gives tons of extra credit. If you don't do HW, you won't do well; that kinda applies for all upper level MAT classes. Good Luck!
Mr. Serpone is an excellent teacher. He understands that not everyone gets math. He gives students enough extra credit to be able to pass with a C. He is funny in a dorky kind of way and does not talk down to his class. Highly recommend him for those that need to check this class off their pre-reqs.
The easiest calc teacher at MCC due to the massive amount of extra credit he offers, but he's still a really good teacher, i was plenty prepared for calc 2 after i took his summer course.
I took this professor for summer school and didn't pass the class, BUT it's Calc and it's summer school. He is very fair, gives extra credit, and teaches you. Make sure you have the books because he goes through the book problems for tests.
Awesome teacher, as long as you actually pay some attention you'll do fine.
Also took him for algebra but the style of the material is different. If you didn't do any of the hw in algebra, it doesn't fly like that in his calc class. Its mandatory to do the hw to understand the material. Gives extra credit and partial credit. Really wants his students to do well. Great prof. Highly recommend.
ProfSerpone was a great instructor. Given that Calculus itself is a hard subject, Prof. Serpone makes the topics somewhat easy, and do-able. You definitely have to do EVERY single homework problem, because he picks problems off of the homework on the exam and quizzes. It's a lot of work, but it's worth it. Do not procrastinate! I recommend him!
Good instructor, but a tough class. You MUST do the HW and spend extra time practicing and studying to pass this class. Plan on spending at least 2-3hrs/day, everyday, seriously. Do NOT procrastinate! If you do, you won't make it. Quiz's and section exams were reasonable with problems that came right from the HW, but the final was BRUTAL!
He's a very clear, very deliberately-paced instructor who really cares about his students' success. Before his class, I was coming from a unique position academically and had some educational deficiencies, and he was empathetic enough to work with me to get beyond them and find a way to succeed in his class. Very kind man, and a great instructor.
Ok, let's be honest here, Calc is one of the hardest classes around! Mr. Serpone does an amazing job of making a difficult class understandable and fun with his hilariously dry wit. While I highly recommend his class, remember, this is not an easy class! Be prepared to put LOTS of time in for homework. I can't stress doing homework enough!
Rick S. is the funnest best teacher. He helped me thru my hardest class, calc. Then he helped me teach it to HS'ers. He is an act of GOD.
I'm surprised to see this professor has such a high rating. He is super old school and basic. I found myself lost more often than not. I studied constantly and thought I was ready for the first exam, but most of the questions on exam were not ever covered in class or homework. Dropped class after first exam to protect GPA.
He is a nice enough person, and he has a really dry sense of humor which is entertaining -- but do NOT take his Calc class. Only graded items are quizzes that are ridiculously hard and exams, no homework is graded, but you still have to spend ~2-3 hours a night to stay caught up. Gives extra credit, but not enough. Avoid this prof for Calc.
He's awesome make Calc I bearable if you'll do the homeworks and did great lectures you got nothing to worry about. Very helpful especially on algebra tricks and really passionate about Math.
This teacher is very helpful and he lets you know what will be on the test as long as you do the work you'll pass
Calc 1 during a shortened summer class is just crazy. There is not time to really grasp one idea before two more are thrown at you. I would really think twice about taking him for a summer Calc class. Tests are very tough but his grading on those tests leaves room for you to pass. I got a B in the class but most students withdrew.
Rich is an extremely nice guy, almost too nice though. He allows students to just sit and have their own conversations during class while others are trying to listen. Math teachers are usually the first ones to shut those students up. He gives extra credit which is awesome and is an easy grader on quizzes, he gives every one extra chances.
Great teacher wish I had again this semester
He was nice enough, but the only grades came from tests and quizzes, with a little bit of extra credit. His grading is subjective, and he doesn't go through all the material that will be on his quizzestests. They are insanely hard, too. Not only that, but he was a poor teacher, leaving more questions than answers.
Tough course, but super awesome professor. Makes math fun, even though he is a math dweeb!
Dr. Serpone is a fantastic instructor, he's always very clear about what he's going to want you to do on an exam and what will be on an exam, his teaching is clear and deliberate, and he's just an incredibly nice guy. I can't rate him highly enough.
Very hard class. Almost 60% of the class withdrew by the end of the semester. If your math skills are not strong or up to date there is a good chance you will fail.
I took this class over a summer session. It was tough because it is hard to learn a big topic like calc over summer. I went to my assigned lecture and then sat through his next one to consolidate the info. Pay attention and do your homework. I really appreciated that he was available to talk about homeworktest questions, he was really helpful.
He wants his students to pass, and is a super nice guy. if you ask him for help, he'll help you. Homework due every chapter. Quiz every section then a chapter test. Some small extra credit.
AMAZING Calc teacher! I have taken calc at UW-Milwaukee... didn't understand, dropped it... and I tried again at a community college in MKE, dropped it... then I gave it a 3rd time at MCC... and I understood perfectly. He simplified things and said things how they were. Derivatives basically being the slope.. best calc teacher, no doubt.
I strongly advise against taking this course in the summer unless you already have some experience with Calculus. It's a 15 week course compressed into 8 weeks, and it moves FAST. Rick is a great teacher, though -- very knowledgeable and accessible if you have questions.
If you are an auditory learner(you learn well from just hearing), then this is your guy. I only have one downside to him, he is right handed. This means if your sitting on the right side of the class you will only be able to see his back instead of what he is writing on the board. If you take his class make sure you sit on the left. Weird I know.
Mr. Serpone is a great professor, but make sure to sit towards the front of class because he writes really small. He gives 100 points extra credit for the semester and I recommend doing it, it's based off of doing the homework. You have a quiz at the end of each week and 4 tests. He tells you what is on the final but it is still pretty tough.
Awesome professor! Always there for students and very helpful! Would recommend any day any time!
I was in his 2pm class, his 3rd class of the day, and I swear he just assumed he taught us stuff but actually only taught his other classes. He doesn't plan his lessons well. He has no handouts, so everything is hand written notes, wasting a lot of time. No command of the class, lets students be disruptive. He's a smart guy, but a bad teacher.
Show up to class every day and take notes, do the homework, and study and you will pass no problem. Very good teacher who cares about his students. If you have any problems he is always willing to explain anything again for you. Quizzes every Thursday which are averaged for a test grade. Extra credit on every test including final.
Teaches a challenging course very thoroughly and tells the students exactly what to expect on quizzes and exams. Overall great professor, he made calculus easy to understand and even adds comic relief to the lectures.
Exams/quizzes consist of the most difficult problems from homework and lecture. Tons of memorization is required for different rules and identities that will never be used again in lieu of testing the pupil's ability to process the type of problem. After going through a theory once the student is expected to be an expert in the given area. Enjoy!
He helps you out when you need him. Gives a ton of extra credit, and reviews before a quiz and exam. Which is really helpful!
Professor Serpone is perhaps the most generous math teacher I've ever taken. He gives generous partial credit on exams, along with good extra credit opportunities. The class, and the material itself, is quite difficult, but if you put in work, you're sure to learn.
Pros: Extra credit/generous with partial credit on wrong quiz questions Very deliberate i.e. you know what will be on exams Jovial character Lots of experience Cons: Makes minor mistakes on the board during lectures-watch him. His expertise makes it hard for him to realize why you don't understand. Come to class/do HW he assigns, and you'll pass.
First time I took Calc I was with Serpone. Went very quickly during the lectures, and erased the board before I could take the notes, which made it pretty impossible to not fail tests/quizzes. Even without the notes, I found his teaching pretty ineffective. Offers you extra credit if you do the bookwork, would save your grade more or less.
I had to drop this class for summer because it was too difficult to understand his type of teaching. It was way too fast paced and he did not explain anything on the board. The test is also difficult and nothing alike the homework. Save your time.
Very difficult instructor. Often times would not cover material completely or the day before review. Made up quizzes and tests that were often hard to follow. Does provide a lot of partial credit, but sometimes the student is left to interpret what the instructor really wants. Not very good at explaining concepts in different manner to students.
VERY fast paced lectures. Stands in front of his work, doing several steps before showing it, and does little to explain it afterwards even when asked. Often erasing the work before most have finished copying it. Weekly quizzes. Is not clear on what hes looking for when grading. Offers some extra credit, but its needed. Says to be happy with a C.
Prof. Serpone is a great. He genuinely cares about your success and is willing to help in any way he can. At times his lectures are hard to follow and he moves on quickly, regardless of your understanding. Sometimes not the greatest at explaining things. This is a hard course. He gives LOADS of extra credit! Homework isn't graded. Tests are tough.
TBH, people leaving bad reviews probly underestimated the difficulty of Calc. He's great! Pros: Tons of extra credit! Homework isn't turned in, but my god, do it. Exam ?'s are hw ?'s with small number changes, gives good partial credit. Cons: Can go a little fast during lectures, is happy to slow down/answer ?'s. But be clear where you're stuck.
Calculus is difficult, but he gives you so many chances to get extra credits. I strongly recommend you to do all the hw problems that he assigns. He won't collect it or grade it, but it helps you to do much better on the quizzes and exams . He really cares about his student, and always answer to your questions. Take him!!!
While Rick was really knowledgeable in the subject of Calculus he was not a very good teacher. If you are new to calculus I would recommend looking for another teacher. He ignores application for the sake of teaching only theory and wants you to memorize proofs for the exams. While partial credit was there, it wasn't all that generous.
Great professor! I would highly recommend taking his class for Calc 1. The homework he assigns directly reflect the exams - so if you do all the HW you will do very well on the exams. He also offers extra credit, and is a great guy to talk to after class for any/all questions.
Homework isn't mandatory, but does help prepare for the quizzes and tests. Gives a lot of extra credit.
If you do the homework and review his notes given in class, you can most certainly pass with an A. He offers an extra credit assignment before every exam that could boost a failed quiz to an A. He teaches a lil fast, but if you ask him we will slow down or explain it again he will. He made Calc 1 enjoyable and I wish he still taught 2 & 3.
My favorite math teacher so far. Lots of extra credit available (he'll even help you solve the e.c. problems). Exam and quiz questions come from the homework problems. It's a 5-credit course so it obviously involves a lot of studying, but if you go to class and do the homework you'll know what to expect on tests.
Old-fashioned instructor who is easy to learn from as long as you do not miss any class. Lots of extra credit. Lots of homework, it was not graded but was almost essential to pass. Easy to talk to and work with outside of class. My only gripe with this professor was that he doesn't use Canvas. You have to ask him in person to see how you're doing.
If all you care about is memorizing stuff so you can pass then this class is probably fine for you. But if you want to genuinely understand the concepts then don't waste your time. He doesn't explain things he just stands at the board and works out proofs and tells you which to memorize.
I'll preface by saying Calculus is a hard class no matter who your professor is. Professor Serpone is a great teacher. He is old school in his methods in that nothing is online and all the HW q's are in the book. The homework problems are directly correlated with the exams so do them. His humor and light-heartedness made the lectures very enjoyable
He was so easy ! He explains the material so well and easy for students to understand. If you need help he will help and also gives extra credit ! He tells you what will be on the test so you can be prepared which is amazing !
Professor Serpone is amazing, he really goes out of his way to make things as easy as possible for the students. he understands that life happens. You still need to put in effort for the class, but if you do, you'll pass with flying colors.
