Cool guy, he can have a bad temper at times
awesome guy...lives in my town
psych-god! Constantly using allusions to psychological theories. Its amusing to sit back and watch him play 'mind-games' with pupils. He has great ability to focus attention and will do so with 'stage-toys.' Very relaxing voice, and incredibly intuitive. I love his class; others may not, soley based on abstract learning material.Bring an open-mind!
Good teacher. Good lectures too. But insanely hard paper for organizational psychology.
Would highly recommend
Shifley is a nice guy and his lectures are entertaining. Tests are fair, but if you have to write a paper you better minor in english. He expects ALOT from you when he assigns a paper. PS.....Watch your Grammer when writing papers...His wife is a newspaper editor or some crap and she helps correct the papers...Good Luck!
The Worst!
Gets off on making students feel uncomfortable in class. Also, his tests blow.
dont ever take his class. Our final was on 14 chapters and the other teacher reese's final was on 2 chapters!gave me an A- with a 92.4. Takes attendance and many pop quizzes.
I have taken 3 behavioral classes with him! Not that I wanted to but they were mandatory. His a great professor because he makes you answer with clarity and really in-depth analysis. He's a tough grader but I felt that I improve my writing through it. Some people are afraid of him because he can put you on the spot but you'll be surprise that every
Dr. Shifley is a good professor overall. He actually makes you understand the material and doesnt just sit there and make you watch powerpoint slides. Interesting class. Tests are tricky but I know many kids who took the other "easier" psych teacher and most of them did worse on their tests than we did on ours!
Don't ever take his class. He is mean and makes you feel stupid in class and in his office. He hates pharamacy students because they will make more money than he does.

He is very rude and scary...he yells for no reason if u bother him a little. u have to read the book and take notes cuz he doesn't put anything online
great prof... he only yells at you if theres a good reason- like ur being an idiot. pay attention and youll learn a lot.
If you are an average student like most here in MCPHS believe me, do yourself a favor and choose another teacher. Don't get me wrong he's a great guy and everything but his tests are so hard and usually very unfair with the material he uses.
The class if fun, but the tests are hard and unreasonable. Worst class ever.
i think the class isn't too difficult. just do good on the pop quizzes and tests (there arent many) and read the book

he does not post his lectures online, and his tests are hard and unreasonable
He is a horrible, horrible man and an even worse professor. I thought he was going to be alright, but I was wrong. If I could drop the course, I would, but it is too late into the semester. My only hope is that the other professors' tests can bring my average up. :'(
his a tough grader!
Shifely is horrible. His tests demand too much out of students when he fails to prepare us adequately (if at all). I hope that administration read this reviews and they fire him. Oh, let's psychoanalyze me and see why I feel this way... maybe it is because I wasn't potty-trained correctly. Give me a break! He is also inappropriate with discussions.
His tests are WAY too hard. He spends the whole class talking about his own sexual fantasies and then gives VERY unfair questions on the exam about things that we never even went over or were never assigned to read about. Do yourself a favor - if you get assigned to him freshman year, drop out of the school. He'll ruin your GPA anyway...
His class overall is interesting and fun. But, his tests are WAY hard, extremely unreasonable, and tricky. My advice is make sure you do well on the exams/quizzes given by the other 2 pysch professors because his test will lower your overall grade in the class.
hard.
He tends to pick on people during class so be prepare to answer any questions he throw out at you!!! His exam is hard! Study everything he tells you to read, no textbook for this class.. my suggestion is to fill in the blank boxes of the papers he tell you to print out so it'll be easier to study.
No respect for student, give superiority attitude, I would said discriminating.Asking for unconfortable sexual question???? Take advantage of his power of failing or passing which probably never occur
He is a rude personage, he doesn't welcome you during office hours although his pay check is build from our money that paying for the school.
Horrible, he enjoys making student loosing self confident(even the best IQ) by throwing inappropriate question during class. The lecture is focusing too much on racial differences .... the dean need to step into this issue for the best interest of MCPHS.
Have to read the book and go to class. He is good professor just tricky on the test
He's pretty funny and he makes you think about things in ways you never have before. He loves to pick on unsuspecting students in class, so sit in the middle of the row if you want to avoid being singled out. His quizzes and exams are pretty tricky, but if you put in the work you will do fine. Be sure to keep up on all of the readings. Good luck!!!
I think he is very good, he's a good professor, the book is the key to pass his quizzes,If you seek for help and go to him he will help you improving your grade, I learn a lot from him, but those kids are to young to enjoy the class, I 'll definetly take him again if I have to. MJM
What a weirdo this guy is. His tests and quizzes are unreasonably hard... not to mention that the class discussions he forces us to engage in make me and my friends think that he is a perv. Someone needs to evaluate his tenure (if he has it), and if he doesn't, either fire him or get him to clean up his act.
I don't see why people claim his exams to be so difficult. If you put time into studying the notes he gives in class, you'll do well. Funny guy but knows when to get down to business.
Loves to teach which makes him a great teaches. Tells a lot of interesting story. Has experience as a nurse and tries his hardest to make connections to the medical field. Yeah, his tests are hard...but that's life people.
His lectures are very interesting and he gets you thinking. His exams aren't the usual ones you're used to getting. He's an extremely tough grader and makes you feel like you're not doing anything right no matter how hard you try.
lectures might come off as strange, but including discussions and instead of the typical boring lectures,it helps to make the class to pertain the information much better. he often gives the class options to which exams to take and sometimes he'll change the syllabus just to make everyone happy.
okay class, can be dull at times and dragged out
He is so funny and by far the best professor i have had. His test are not hard at least not for Intro to Psy. Study and you'll do fine or pay attention in class and you will do fine.
His intro to psych class was easy peasy! His discussions are very interesting and if you just pay attention and read the chapters before hand, you will do just fine in his class. His tests were pretty fair, sometimes easy, but they were definitely not hard if you studied by reviewing the terms in the book.
He is just a good professor. He uses his own teaching methods. I like his classes. I took a human development class with him. If you follow the objective learning that he posts on BB , you'll get a full mark.
interesting class. but need to read the book a lot, and he is hard on grading assignment.
He is very nice, helpful if needed. fun and I enjoy his class
I had Professor Shifley for Intro to Psych my first year. I loved his class so much that I took 2 electives with him during years 2 and 3. His lectures are hilarious and entertaining, never a dull moment. He has a lot of experience, offers a lot of insight, and really makes you think with his Socratic style of teaching. Highly recommend!
such a hard grader.
This is not a course to slack off in, but it is a very educational and fun course that teaches you so much in the long run. It is well worth the money you pay for in this university. He is only a tough grader when you do not care about your own work and do not put any effort into his course. I recommend this professor for the information learned.
Pop quiz everywhere, but an amazing class! (*He doesn't do attendance, but you should not skip classes)
The tests were super easy as long as you read the book. However, he does give a lot of pop quizzes which were my downfall. You need to attend every class because those quizzes are a good percentage of your final grade. Overall his class is extremely fun, interesting and completely discussion based.
He a total disappointment for a college professor. If you really care to maintain your GPA, avoid this guy as he will simply hurt your grade to feel adequate. The dean should step in to review his work. He should not be teaching as he just doesn't get it. Teaching and educate requires more than he has to offer...
One comment. Don't take his course even wait for the next semester. He'll find a way to ruin your grade even if you deserve better. Avoid this mean. He will bring MCPHS down on its knees someday unless the dean stops him. What a pity!
Poor choice of college instructor. MCPHS should re-evaluate him or send him to training. Don't take his class. You will not learn anything useful. He's uses the grading power to mock you. He does a good job covering up so the dean won't know
Worst professor at MCPHS. Rude and inapppropriate with double standards in the syllabus. Favor student colleagues to external students.
One of the best Psych professors. Its up to you to learn and he is there to clarify things. His teaching style make you question everyday life which plays very nicely into the learning process. Bottom line is you have to read and put a lot of time into the class but you'll also get a lot out of it.
He's a very stubborn man with no room for outside opinions. You should learn how he thinks quickly and cater to his needs. In my mind he's a terrible academic presence because his ignorance to other possibilities is 0. Funny though, because he teaches tolerance, yet has none himself. The irony is comical.
Great professor. Do not listen to those horrible reviews. He is really smart and enjoys challenging his students. He will make you think a lot about things in life. If you do not like to read ,too bad but it is worth it. All the exams are base from the book. If you put any effort to his class you should be fine. There's no reason to fail.
Absolutely amazing professor who loves to teach. Though his way of teaching isn't ordinary, I loved both of the classes I have taken with him. He likes to have a conversation with you like a grown adult so don't be rude :)
One of the best classes I have ever taken. Yes there is a lot of reading and quizzes but if you pay attention and read the chapters, youll get a A. He has a binder project that he is picky about so pay attention to that. Hes really funny and smart and youll learn a lot about human development
I really enjoyed Professor Shifley's Human Dev. His teaching style is very interactive, and he may at first seem intimidating but just talk to him respectfully, and try to really grasp what he is saying. His exams can be very specific, and I think that is why he gets some tough reviews. Though everything he teaches is important, and we'll need as
Amazing Professor! His lectures are not boring at all and instead of reading off of a powerpoint we basically have class discussions. If you read the textbook and fill out the chapter objectives (which is basically a study guide) you will do just fine.
Hes a terrible teacher and his class has nothing to do with anything that will help future healthcare professionals in their field facing death and dying. Instead the class is a psych 102 class. His grading rubric doesnt matter. He will give you whatever grade he feels like with no feedback
You definitely have to work for a good grade in this class. The amount of effort put in is what you will see in your grade. Online mini quizzes are fairly easy. As long as you do the chapter objective questions he assigns, and study, you will receive a good grade. He is a nice guy and tries to get the class involved during lectures.
I took Professor Shifley's class for summer credit and I wish I could have switched into a different section. He gives no time to take quizzes and he words them in a way that is almost impossible to understand. He grades discussion boards harder than my English professors graded papers. I definitely do not recommend this professor.
I don't know how Professor Shifley is still teaching at MCPHS. He is such a hard grader and has given me low grades for no reason. When I asked him why I received a lower grade, his excuses were not logical. If you are trying to maintain a high GPA, do not take this professor. He is horrible.
I took Death & Dying and learned nothing about death or dying. We had to read 4 books for the class. The class was more of a psych 102 and lit. class than BEH. I expected to learn about the process of death, how other cultures experience death, the stages of grief. I didnt. The grading system is completely random and ruined my GPA. DO NOT TAKE.
Prof. Shifley assigns 4 books you have to great, his 5 theories assignments are challenging but also somewhat helpful. Go to his office hours if you need help with the theories-very helpfulish. His quizzes are ok just a ALWAYS review voicethread. His grading style is little funky but he's overall an ok professor. Always attend meetings
He likes giving bad grades without reasons
Professor Shifleye is a good speaker, but you cannot pass if you just listen to his lecture. Everything on the quiz and exam can be found on the textbook. His lecture is just an extension. Just follow the learning objective to find the thing you should know on textbook, and there will be no problem to be good.
I have no idea why there are such bad reviews on Professor Shifley. He was hands down the best professor I have had at MCPHS. Yes, his class can be hard but if you work hard to learn the material you will do very well in his class. I took human development with him and it was my favorite class because of his teaching style and enthusiasm.
He's not as bad as people think. The course is easy; I took the class and was also a peer note taker. Just take your notes and pay attention in class. His tests are incredibly easy, as long as you read the chapters you'll at least get a B. Ask questions in class, even if it's for clarification. He goes off on tangents and uses personal experiences.
His teachings do not make sense. Your answer is wrong if you do not have the same opinions as him. His questions in class try hard to be complex. He tries hard to make us think "deeper" into simplistic topics.
If you are not required to take this course, I am warning you to choose a different elective. This course was not meaningful in any way. You rarely even learn about death and dying. This is more of a psychology class. Don't even get me started on the way he grades and teach.
Week 1 of this class is a little weird when he had so many toys and dolls but i get why he have them. If you don't share his opinions, your answer is incorrect. In class, he makes an effort to ask complex questions. Through his explanations, he tries to make us think "deeper" about simplistic concepts.
Very harsh in grading and doesn't know how to teach. That's all what I'm gonna say.
the worst professor at mcphs. very unkind in his grading. he tries to make you think deeper into topics that are so simple. his papers her grades like its life or death. he thinks he's a deep think but i swear he doesn't make sense at all. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS ITS A GPA TANKER. I REPEAT DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS.
PLEASE DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS!!!!!! He takes off points even if you say the right thing. I was literally depressed because I would read the chapters he assigned and still get 10/30. I recommend you switch out as soon as possible because there is more that I can talk all day about him. In lecture, he makes you think deeply about simplistic thing.
I felt as if his grading was completely unfair and not correct. During our class lectures, he did teach us real like situations but nothing about what we learn to help us pass the exam. I will say he did give out worksheets to help out but personally I thought to myself what a waste of my money especially since we pay a lot to be here.
What you see is what you get in terms of grades, you put in the effort you get an A. He is clear, superb at teaching, and great at relating to students. He makes class interesting by bringing toys to class which was refreshing and a great learning strategy. Definitely a strong professor and capable of explaining concepts well. Take his class 100% .
lack of clarity can make it difficult to grasp the core concepts and understand what is expected in assignments and exams. The exams in this course are notably difficult, study guides didn't often help
Assignments were online and had a quiz every 2-3 weeks. I liked how the course was well-structured and organized. He takes attendance randomly throughout the semester by having you write on a notecard your name and one new thing you leaned in class that day. I liked how he applied real-life scenarios to lectures which made it easier to understand.
I dislike him very much. He has a complex and gives no mercy. He likes to hold grades over students' heads and is very passive-aggressive. He is EVIL and will not try to help you in any shape or form if you ask him. He also definitely picks favorites. I believe he has a fetish for power, definitely a big ego.
like everyone said he is a very tough grader, especially when it comes to test, if you don't write an answer by the text book definition or his way he will mark it wrong, you won't even get partial credit for it. He is a nice teacher and gives good lectures but in terms of grading, good luck. You better study hard and be prepared
Not a very well structured course. Lectures were spent more on applying topics than learning them, yet some things discussed in lecture were not relevant. Professor speaks in a very arrogant and condescending manner and is not very approachable. He is a hard grader and grades based on his opinion rather than accuracy.
Idk why everyone is hating on this man - I loved his class. He makes you think and come to your own conclusions, ensuring that you actually understand the material instead of memorizing it. His lectures are always funny, and he makes the whole room laugh at least once per class. The 'ego' he has is really just his sense of humor imo
The professor is great, and his lectures are engaging. Practice and mastery quizzes are easy, but the written parts can be tricky. Understanding concepts and applying them to real life is key. Active participation makes the class enjoyable and helps with quizzes. The material is practical and useful, making this course a valuable experience.
He's a very decent person, but you have 4 exams you have to memorize about 4 chapters for every exam from the textbook. If you only need a behavioral science elective, I wouldn't recommend this class, it's such a waste of time, just take it online. He's a tough grader & sometimes stuff will be on the exam that he didn't mention it was going to be.
Class is engaging and his way of teaching prepares you for real world scenarios you'd experience in healthcare. Don't fall behind on readings and attend classes and you'll be prepared for the quizzes. He really doesn't have an ego, he breaks questions down until you realize the answer - puts you on the spot which some people don't like.
