very hard. he is also a big jerk.
He is a nice guy, but not too helpfull when it comes to showing you how to do things. The On-line class is pretty easy if you don't miss lessions.
not very helpful. Nice guy though. Get tutoring if you take him. It is a must.
A really nice guy. He went slow and easy. The tests were v. straightforward, no trickiness, some questions straight from homework. I think if you keep up with your homework (and ask questions when he asks if anyone has any questions), then you'll do fine.
HE KNOWS WHAT HE IS TEACHING. HE IS HARD BUT FUN AT THE SAME TIME. HE GIVES YOU REAL LIFE EXAMPLES AND TELLS YOU STORIES RELATED TO THE TOPIC. GOOD IF YOU REALLY WANT TO LEARN.
Prof very clear in lectures, but the info is not corelated with tests. He is engaging, entertaining. Competent in his own skills, but lulls you into a false sense of security. what he covers in class is not on the test. It would be more helpful if you have a strong mathematics background before taking this course.
Works hard to get the lessons across in class, really wants people to ask about what they don't understand, but grades hard. Definitely expects you to put in hours studying outside class. If you don't, you'll most likely fail.
nice person...but you don't get much from him
Prof Wing is great - He makes calculus somewhat fun but you have to work at it too. Keep up with the homework and ASK QUESTIONS - he wants to help you to do well. The exam questions are very similar to homework but sometimes there are some random/tricky questions but he curves grades anyhow so it doesn't affect your grade too much. Also, the exams
Rick is conscientious. I'd encourage you to take Math 13 after Pre-Calc at least. Don't be fooled by the prerequisite. Statistics is not easy. I found this class not bad because I'd taken Calc3, Linear Algebra, Differential Eq. beforehand. I'd highly recommend you to get Math maturity on you to ace in this class.
Energetic. Intelligent. Funny. I was engaged the whole semester. Explanations very clear. Exam material just like the HW - no surprises, no tricks. So, do the HW or you'll experience pain, kinda like the sorry whiners posting negative comments about his teaching. Oh yeah, try not to smack your gum in class.
Very nice person. Easy on exams. But if you plan to be a math-related major, it may be not a good idea to choose him b/c he's not so rigolous that would not help you built a solid foundation. But for others, he makes the class so enjoyable.
Thanks Prof Wing! (He kept me awake & on track). You may find his stories or jokes corney, but he genuinely wants you to learn, and is a performance-artist teacher. He is fast (without caffeine) & naive & nice. If you don't ask questions, you may be lost, but if you do, his answer may be quite long (for the slow students who are too shy).
I have concerns. My first impression of this instructor was that he did not give a welcoming assuring feeling to the class. He seemed very regimented and tough and said he demanded everyone memorize formulas. I dont know if I should go to PreCal, am considering doing so.
BEST math teacher I've ever had. Very thorough, tells many stat related stories to make the topic interesting. Tries to engage the students by having us do examples together during class. Gives a good amount of HW, usually the questions w/answers in the back of the book so you can check yourself, really wants you todo well, has respectful demeanor.
Great teacher. I'm grateful I had Prof. Wing for both math 203 and 13. Do all the homework, and use the tutors. No teacher can teach you math unless you do the work. Yes, in math and science you might need to memorize some formulas. If you have trouble with that, kiss your academic career goodbye. Cal profs won't hold your hand, either.
its math, what do you expect? Do the homework, study, come to class to turn in homework and ask questions and you'll be fine.
I hate Statistics period. Mr. Wing made it interesting though. Saturday morning class was a tough time to attend his class coz' you can't really party Friday nite but it was worth it. I actually passed his class =P Overall, he's a good teacher although sumtimes he gets carried away, he goes so fast solving the problems.
I really hate statistics. Problem Solving ain't easy. As long as you do your HW and definitely NEED to come to class you will be OK. He's a good teacher just tend to solve the problem fast. He cannot help it coz' he's good at what he does. Overall, I recommend taking this course with Mr. Wing. He has a good sense of humor also.
Funny guy, but tends to tell more anecdotes than he actually teaches. Very condescending, and overall not a great instructor to have if Mathematics is your worst subject. You're better off learning from the book/tutors than this guy.
Rick is a fun professor. I enjoyed his class very much. In the beginning of the sem he spent a lot of time on the first 3 chapters and made sure you really got how to calculate S (mean). Then he kinda' rushed through the class. With our class, he tried something new: he made every exam to be multiple choice problems(20 questions total for each test)
Don't hate on Wing if you don't do well. It's really not him--it's you. Most people are in there fulfilling a requirement and don't give the effort; he knows that and does his best regardless. Grow up, go to class, and do the homework; it's not rocket science.
I studied really hard for his tests and still had to drop the class (I really did not want to risk getting a C). If you are not a math person, I suggest you take a course with a professor that explains the subject more clearly. He's cool but not the best when it comes to teaching. If you think you're okay at math, just do the hw and you'll do fine.
Good teacher for those with a strong background in math. He covered a lot in the beginning, but got sloppy towards the end. I attended everyday and talked to classmates/tutors--his teaching methods just didn't 'click'.
You reap what you sow in his class. Study hard, work hard, it will be worth the effort and it will show. He is a good teacher, his ways are different from some.
Mr. Wing is a different kind of professor. Coming to BCC from a 4 year, I found Mr. Wings style more like a real college prof. Not much actual instruction, no graded HW, just 4 tests. All effort has to be made by you to do well. That being said, he barely taught us anything. His tests were all multiple choice (a very bad thing) and confusing to me.
got a B. Don't be mad if you don't pass. He makes it clear in the beginning of the semester that your true efforts/hard work reflect your outcome. Very true. No extra credit. your grade all depends on how much you listened in class and did hw. That's what should be expected out of college students.
Had him years ago for intermediate algebra and am taking him again for statistics. He's a great teacher - makes the class fun. I actually want to go there. You DEFINITELY need to study and show up to class. Don't be absent and then upset when you are way behind, and don't blame your lack of being prepared on him.
He is secretly a kung fu instructor on Friday Nights in San Francisco. Do not fail his class he will kick your ass.
Wing is awesome! He is very clear about what he expects, so when he says you'll have to work hard, believe him. He's true to his word.
Very fast paced.
He is a very detailed teacher, he explains in a way that makes sense which is difficult 2 find in a math teacher. If u have ?'s he will stay on the subject until u get it. And he makes the class fun, especially later in teh semester as he gets to know the students. U have to do the homework to keep up and attendance is necessary to "get" it.
Rick is a great teacher and I would NOT have done as well as I did in Int. Algebra without him as a teacher. That said, he does NOT coddle students and hold up class to review basics---that's what the Math lab is for. Do your HW and you will survive. He's a trip!
He really is a great teacher. One thing that I liked was that he would stay on a topic until you understood and he explained things until they made sense. Tests mostly every week, attendence and HW is a must to really pass. The final was pretty easy.Study for his tests,go to the SLC and GET A STUDY GROUP!!! Good luck :D
Rick Wing was a very good teacher, good humored, helpful and most importantly clear and fair. I enjoyed lecture.
This class is very fast paced. Don't take this unless your Calculus 16A/3A is in order! Grade is five tests with the lowest dropped, no HW/quizzes. The tests are very tricky and often have nothing to do with HW; multiple choice means no partial credit! And with only 15 to 20 questions, getting an A means missing 1-2 MAX per test. Take at own risk!
Clear, concise, straight-forward. Hw is relevant to exams. 5 mult choice exams; lowest grade dropped; 15-20 question; 1-2 wrong each for the A. Do not underestimate the class as some students tend to do. Wing is an excellent prof for those who want a fast and effective lecture.
Only criticism is that he is not always good at explaining ideas in layman's terms. You have to ask a lot of questions. He skips steps which is good if you paid attention in Elementary Algebra, but I would not recommend him if you need each step written out when doing in-class problems. Very professional and upbeat!
Wing is definitely one of the best Algebra teachers I've ever had. I always approach algebra like it's the hardest thing in the world because it's never been easy, but he made it seem really easy, and explained things thoroughly. He does skip steps at times during demonstrations, but generally, he's a really good teacher. I highly recommend him.
Focus on the lecture, not tied to the text. Great pace with good sense of humor. Do the homework and read over your notes. Doesn't try to trick you on exam. Lets you know what to expect.
Well Wing's class was indeed fast-paced.I took him for Elementary Algebra. He had us do a test for every chapter and they were all multiple choice. He often made funny jokes during class.I got an A in his class, got A's on each test.Indeed if you wanna pass, dont expect him to coddle you,you really need to put your own effort.I enjoyed his class =).
His class was hard for me but he's a good teacher. He's such a dork but he's so funny at the same time which makes the class a little more bearable. His tests were pretty straight forward and multiple choice-but do not underestimate him and go to class or you will regret it.
His class is extremely helpful, especially for those people who are not good at math. He explains everything clear and detail. If you don't understand, you can go and ask him. He will explain it until you understand it. He is nice and funny. And i love his class very much.
Rick Wing not a good teacher to take. If you know the Math and don't need any explanations then he's the teacher is for you. When he shows you a problem he skips many steps to that problem saying you should already how to do the problem. If I were you I would not take this teacher. Funny yes, but jokes and laughter don't teach you Math.
I liked Rick Wing a lot - great guy. There is some validity to others' posts about him skipping steps - that was a problem for me. The school demands a fast pace, and if you can't take it, go to Laney where you can take half the class per semester. Anyway, go to class, keep up on the homework. Multiple choice tests - but don't underestimate them.
His class was the first I ever dropped. He didn't teach AT ALL, only answered questions. Gives multiple choice tests with trick questions. Attendance is pretty much required because he randomly checks homework and homework is part of the grade. Didn't care for him at all and everyone I've talked to didn't either.
He is great guy but pretty harsh on grading. Do not take if math is not ur strength.
Awesome teacher. You will do fine as long as you read the text and do all homework.
He's a great professor. One of the best Math professors at BCC. He's really helpful as long as you show interest in his class. His tests are a bit difficult, but if you attend his classes and do the hw you'll be fine.I recommend him.
He isn't very helpful. He doesn't try to explan your homework questions. He mostly spend time telling you stories. Your grade mostly depend on how well you do your tests. However, he'll rather tell his students to go find tutors than to explan them the question.
HE's not respectful. He's not being helpful. He spends most of the time in class talking about himself...
Rick was one of my best teachers ever. Though sometimes he was a bit hard to understand or went a little fast, he's taught me so much that I never knew before. He has always answered my questions clearly, but sometimes he doesn't answer other people's. I'd definitely recommend him, you just need to show some interest.
Very helpful. I really like his lecture that he always tries to relate statistic in real life, which makes us to gain more interest in learning statistic.
This was my first time taking Statistics. He skips steps so nobody in my class understood him. If you don't read the chapter previously you have no clue what he says. Basically you get credit by studying yourself, without any help. He is not a good teacher. Most of the time he spends talking about himself and Bruce Lee. Do not take classes with him
Average homework volumes, lectures are enough to understand, he also could answer questions.
He is the best instructor that I have ever had. He certainly is a GREAT teacher, he makes it easy to understand and is very patient and helpful. Attend the class, because that's how you can learn the material, and do the homework, and A is a piece of cake. I strongly recommend him to whoever wants to take math. He's the master!
Basically Rob Schneider. Super funny guy. Take this class.
DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS IF YOU ARE NOT GOOD AT MATH. of the 50 students who started the semester with me only 10 people passed, and i was no one of them. He doesnt write his steps on the board and spent most of the time telling us how to NOT do a problem but never said how to do it! worst math teacher ive ever had.
Prof. Wing is a good teacher. He does move fast and shows you likely places for errors. He also encourages skipping steps for the sake of time and paper but it is usually simple math stuff. Good to learn but it ups your chances for errors. Do the homework and you will get a good grade.
Mr. Wing is by far the highest caliber professor at BCC that I have had the pleasure to experience. His lectures were always clear and informative and never felt like a waste of time. Most importantly every lecture was on point with the content of the tests. -Mr. Air Force
Pointless stories, confusing explanations. He would rather listen to himself talk than explain math concepts in a clear way.. If you like to see each step clearly explained do NOT take this class. Although you could make a fun drinking game out of how many times he says a problem is "Sooooooooooo easy!'
AWFUL TEACHER! If you already know all about statistics and can read, then this is the class for you. If you need to LEARN statistics stay far away from this man. Snotty attitude. He makes you stand in line at his desk while he corrects your tests. No helpful feedback on your tests and then he keeps it so you can't even learn from your mistakes.
Prof. Wing is a funny dude. He makes math topics interesting and engaging. Tests are very easy as long as you follow along in class and do the HW. Also he looks like an asian jerry seinfeld
He doesn't grade homework which is great! Although He does highly suggest homework, and just like any other class try to stay a day ahead of lectures so you understand the concepts.
I've had some pretty awful math teachers in the pass, but Prof. Wing is by far one of the best I've had. Most people in my class don't like him, but most people in my class don't show up on a regular basis. If you have a question he'll gladly explain it to you, but he can't walk you through two weeks of material. BCC is lucky to have him.
Rick is an amazing teacher who really knows his stuff. You may have to tell him to slow down sometimes and explain the steps he has taken but overall his instruction is very clear.
He is a great teacher. He is quick with his lessons and erases the work to the questions right after he writes them so you may want to ask him to leave them up longer to copy them. You NEED to listen to him explain how he got the answers and you should ask for him to show the steps because he verbalizes most of it. I recommend tutors for extra help
By far my favorite class this semester. Having a 7:30 am class is tough, but I am never tired or bored. As long as you pay attention, take notes, do homework and STUDY for the tests, you'll get an A. I studied for the past two tests and got a 100 and a 95. He teaches quickly, so make sure you write everything down and pay attention. He's very funny
Prof. Wing is the clearest, most straight-forward math teacher I've had. I feel like math isn't so scary anymore. He is not an easy grader but, if you want to learn the subject and are willing to work, he is a great prof and will help you.
Worst class ever. If you don't know a lot of math before you start his class you will never know. He does not explain the material, he goes over it: if you get it, great. If you don't, poor you. Tests every 3 classes, does not check or gives points for homework. I would not recommend this class for anyone.
Honestly, just go to class, and do all the hw. He's actually a really good teacher and clearly explains all the concepts. His tests are exactly like the hw, so if you do the hw every week you'll be fine on the tests. But you absolutely must go to class, and you really need to do the work. Do that and you'll be fine. Fall behind and you're doomed.
Wing is by far the best math teacher I have ever had. Explained problems clearly but didn't waste lecture time with excessive review. Didn't grade homework (doesn't care if it's neat), but you need to do it, so that you can do well on the exams. Eight exams, drops the worst score. Covered all the material on the syllabus.
Funny teacher and doesn't make his class boring at all- even if it was a Sat. morning "four" hour course. Doesn't let you use a cheat sheet and is a very tough grader, though. He lectures well and is willing to take time if asked.
Rick Wing's class is great. We covered the entire introductory algebra book. He stayed on schedule. The administration of the class was excellent. He grades tests immediately. He grades tests on the spot and gives you your final grade when you turn in your paper. I studied hard and learned a lot.
Overrated. His lectures are very brief about the tests. Wish he would go over or review what will be on the tests. Homework and lectures are totally different than whats on the exam. Tests multiple choice but it can damage your grade because he doesn't give partial credit. Its either right or wrong. Tests are trickly regardless of what he says
Goes over the material fast. Doesn't do the problem step by step which makes the problem confusing. Wouldn't recomend taking his class.
Good teacher but only if you're already good at math. Super fast paced and doesn't do much explaining. He is fair but i wouldn't take this class if you need a prof. that will explain steps thoroughly. for me he was too fast paced.
I took this class as I struggled with math, but Mr. Wing helped me a lot. He grades your paper after you finish and hands it back so there is no room for error. He assigns homework but it's fairly easy and helps a lot.
I didn't find his lectures very helpful, it's almost like he glosses over the information. He does grade the test right after you hand it in but it's nearly impossible to go over what you did wrong. It's a little frustrating to not know why I was able to do the homework and go over it with the tutor but it wouldn't reflect when I took the tests.
Class goes pretty fast. There's tests every two weeks so be prepared for that. The test make up the majority of your grade. He'll tell funny stories sometimes.
His class is lecture based and a lot of the time you have to teach yourself the material because he goes over it once, and just gives a ton of homework.
Professor Wing is a great person, very funny and nice, but lectures reflect nothing that will be on the test. You'll think you understand after studying for hours then be lost when you take the test. Don't recommend taking this class.
Prof. Wing is a really nice guy, however his lecture is really confusing. Your definitely gonna have to do a lot of research on your own, however, if your looking for an easying going teacher I would recommend him. I had a 4hour Saturday class with him, but he never made it feel like 4 hours. He's constantly making jokes and making the class laugh.
Knows the material but does a very poor job delivering it. He does not know how to teach, very disorganized. Jumps from one idea to another creating confusion. never available to answer questions regarding the material. Grade based on three tests and homework, which he never checks. Boring lectures, nice guy but the worst Math teacher I ever had.
He doesn't teach, he simply reviews the material. When you ask him a question or ask how he got a certain number, he gives you a funny/confused look and makes you answer it yourself.. if you struggle with math, avoid him. You will need a lot of tutoring help to fully understand the class. Also, your grade is 100% based on 8 tests you take.
I have mixed feeling about Rick, he cares a lot & wants all students to do well, but he lectures very oddly--spends good time on the mechanics of calculus but not enough detail on actual problems. I did well in the class, but I had my own tutor outside of class that I met several times a week, 100% GET HELP with this class if you are weak at Calc!
One of my favorite math teachers I've had at any school. The tests are difficult, but if you show up to all the classes he will teach exactly what you need to know to get good grades. He has a good feel for when the class doesn't understand a topic, and won't hesitate to go back over difficult sections.
this is class was a nightmare. its a game to mr wing and he enjoys seeing you lose. I tried everything to at least pass this class, if you struggle in math or arent the best test taker DO NOT take his class.
If you struggle with math, I do not recommend taking his classes. He doesn't teach you the material, he reviews it. The grade is strictly based on the tests you take, and the questions on the tests are tricky. It's not what he reviews in class or the book. Don't take his class if you struggle with math, I learned the hard way.
Prof. Wing is an excellent teacher, is willing to help when you need it, but you must ask. The reason this class is hard for people to pass is bc he grades you ONLY on your test scores. He does not collect homework. He grades based on your knowledge of the material, & your knowledge is tested on exams. If you're not a natural, studying is a must.
Egads! Awful, just awful. He is terrible at explaining things. The semester grade is based only on exams. His lectures don't jive with the textbook. Does not hold office hours for the statistics students, only calculus students. I don't understand all the positive reviews. Is there another instructor here by the same name?
Total 5 tests and the lowest score will be dropped, so 4 tests score will be counted. Also, extra credit is offered. The best way to get through this class is to read the test book and do the homework BEFORE the class and review it in class. Dont expect a step by step instruction for all lectures in the class.
My favorite math teacher at Berekely City Collage. Total 5 tests and the lowest score will be dropped, so 4 tests score will be counted. Mr. Wing helped me a lot. Don't consider the negative comment, if you are a hard work student you will pass his class and get A easily. I studied hard and learned a lot.
Passing the tests is all that matters in this class but the tests arent all that hard if you do the homework and pay attention during lecture. Hell even have the TA go over some questions from the test if you stay after class for like 15 minutes while they go over anything youre confused about. Dont be afraid to ask questions during lecture.
Professor Wing has wrong score here. For me he is 5/5. I enjoyed his class. He wants everything written down on paper, but I didnt mind because I learned more in his class. Follow his instructions, do your work on time, and you will get A! Theres no extra credits but he if you are hardworking and really want to learn, he is the best professor!
This professor is the best. He is fun. He always gives a lot of jokes.
In the online class, we used Pearson Learning Program that I really liked. There were monthly due dates, but I was able to go at my own pace. Wing is willing to help if you reach out, but you will be learning through the online program and teaching yourself, which I really liked. You can do hw as many times as you want, quizzes 5 attempts, test 15
Professor runs the entire course off of Pearson mymathlab. Like, he has nothing set up on Canvas and he only interacts to the class via emails to explain what percentage of the class is caught and and who isn't. It is sickening how somebody can work so hard towards their career only to put minimal effort into educating the next generation.
If you good at learning by practicing and reading the textbook to prep for class and tests, you'll love the way he teaches. If not, find a prof that spoon-feeds the material, and lets you know exactly what you're being graded and tested on.
Nice guy, he's funny & often goes off topic during lectures but his stories are fun to listen to. He doesn't really teach any of material: rather does the problems in front of you and expects you to understand. That's my kinda thing, if it's not yours then you'd be better off with a different professor. His grading is not as strict as his syllabus.
I took Rick Wing's class in-person. When students asked (simple/ you should know this) questions, Rick Wing answers them with care, patients, and a thoughtful explanation. He is extremely flexible on test and if you miss classes, he will correct the test score if it was rounding errors and give you time to retake tests if you talk to him about it.
I took Professor Wing's online class. The subject was definitely challenging, but the lessons were well-organized in the Pearson Lab and straightforward. His grading criteria was clear and he was responsive to my emails. Seemed really friendly and supportive.
I took Professor Wing's MATH1 (Pre-Calc) course to get a refresher before Calculus . Professor Wing goes over topics with great detail and isn't boring when he lectures. The tests are exactly on what was covered that week. The only downside was having to pay for Pearson, where all the HW, tests were located. Other than that very good class.
I took Professor Wing's precalc class in my first semester back in college. It was a great reintroduction to math and I loved his teaching style. The homework was almost identical to all the exams, and if you do the homework (which you have unlimited tries on) you should do well on the tests, which are all open note. Really nice guy too :)
He puts lot of effort for his class and if you do your things on the time and participate the class, you can easily pass this class.
I will say, if you decided to take his class be prepared for a lot of teaching yourself. He spends a lot of class time teaching to then finish with "you don't need to worry about this, it's not on your test." Often times, he teaches very different from the text book yet the tests are textbook based. Study the text book before each lesson.
His grading system puts homework at 50% weight, and the homework is allowed to be attempted as many times as possible (before the deadline) for the student to get 100% on it, which helps students raise their grades quite a bit. The other 50% grade weight was from 6 chapter tests, which were quite easy. He is also very helpful and funny in class.
Professor Wing runs a straightforward, flexible class. The online Pearson platform is user-friendly, and he's responsive to questions. unstuck AI and practice tests were key for acing the exams.
