He is a very hard professor, a lot of random quiz that he didn't notice before hand. Need to show up very class and do homework.
missing just a few days f class can greatly hurt your grade if pop quizzes given... can give multiple quizzes in one day...
He makes his tests difficult, most people in my class are failing.
I heard during the regular semester he is hard. BUT during summer school...he's pretty laid back and his teachings actually make sense. He's hilarious w/ his real-life stories. Take him in the summer...highly recommended!!
Do not take him because he is one hard teacher. At the beginning there are 25 people in his class, but he won't add no one. Then guess how many people fails his class? Unbelieveable 15+ people. He urges people to withdrawl his class. Don't take him...
Not an easy class. Doesn't take role but random quizzes pop up often. He goes off on random tangents frequently, unfriendly office hours, unfriendly person in general, seems very separated from reality much to the dismay of the class.
the class was easy ok if you show up everyday and do your homework. the tests were a little tricky and he moved pretty fast. his really random stories kept me laughing the whole semester.... haha! "thats kosher"
THIS GUY IS SO RANDOM. JUST DO THE HOMEWORK AND MAKE IT TO CLASS. HIS TEST AREN'T HARD BECAUSE HE TAKES THE EXACT PROBLEMS FROM HOMEWORK. IT IS REALLY HARD TO SIT THROUGH CLASS BECAUSE OF HIS HORRIBLE( SOUND LIKE THEY ARE MADE UP ON THE SPOT) STORIES. TAKE HIS CLASS AND GET OUT AND RUN. WEIRD GUY.
Professor Wing is a pretty cool person BUT a terrible teacher! Attending his lectures is a waste of time. Just read the book! His tests are okay(mulitiple choices); he allows us to have 3x5 cheat sheet(even for final). His final is also not accumulative!
This class is a repitition of a high school pre-calc class. He's pretty easy, helpful, and tries his best to make the class intersting instead of full-on lecture or problems. He wants you to pass but you have to be the one to go get the help. Do the homewok cause it's worth more than you think.
I hated him, he is very disorganized and not helpful.
Avoid this teacher at all costs! He's awful. He teachers from the oldest math book I have ever seen. He gives exams to classes that are to long for the aloted class time. He gives pop quizes atleast once a week and he is very hard to talk to. It obvious that he views that student as always being wrong.NIGHTMARE!
I took him DS110 as well and it was pretty easy so I took him for DS212 and it's harder than 110. He's pretty easy if you do the homework because it's basically like that in his tests and attend class everyday. He's pretty difficult to understand, so you're but you're allowed a cheatsheet for all the tests except for the first one.
The math itself wasn't very hard, but the teacher was horrible. Wing teaches very quickly, and he does random homework checks. Do your homework. It is easy to say he is one of the worst teachers ever, however if you know this stuff front and back, you'll pass.
THIS IS A MUST TAKE FOR SUMMER ONLY. HE IS VERY QUICK BUT HELPFUL. IF YOU TRY YOU WILL GET A GOOD GRADE. HE MAKES IT EASY FOR YOU TO UNDERSTAND AND HE KNOWS TIME IS LIMITED SO HE ONLY TEACHES YOU THE BASICS. DO NOT TAKE HIM DURING REGULAR SEMESTER. HE IS TWICE AS HARD. BE PREPARED TO STUDY, DO YOUR HOMEWORK. HE MAKES THE CLASS FUN WITH HIS JOKES
Wing is one of the most coolest and funniest teacher at SFSU. He knows his stuff and teaches so well. He's very helpful and is there for his students. Do the homework and the exams will be a piece of cake. Make sure you do the homework regularly because he does check but usually lets you know the day before.
This teacher is horrible. He teaches sooo fast that me and my fellow classmates had trouble keeping up. I do not recommend this teacher at all.
Be prepared for a very fast pace.

This professor is very good. He makes things very clear and is very helpful. Take advantage of his office hours and pay attention in class and do the homework and you will be fine. His tests are not that hard just study your notes and review the chap. he discussed in class. I loved this course and the professor!
He is an interesting and stylish teacher. He teaches very fun but hardly to understand. Study the chapters in your book then your tests will be fine.
be afraid be very afraid!!! in my class over half faild/dropped. He's horrible. If you have to take him go to the LAC or CARP for tutoring!
You really need to study the book on your own. Wing doesn't go through the chapter and teach much. The pace of the class is fast, so it's good to be ahead of the gang. Tests are multiple choice!
chew gum in his class and he will go crazy on you. otherwise seems like a normal guy.
Half of the class drops out, mostly due to the pass/fail grading system of the surprise quizzes every other week or so (8 in total I think). It's very hard to ace every single one, and there is no partial credit. Questions are pretty tricky as well.
he's weird and dresses strange. i didnt like the professor as a person, but his class was simple. he checked homework daily. tests were multiple choice and very easy. so do your homework and quazi study and you'll be fine. i got an A with minimal effort.
I took precalculus with Fahey before this class and it really helped prepare me for what wa sto come. This teacher does not really "teach" you the material.. he QUICKLY shows you what is in each chapter and then assigns homework, WHICH IS NOT MANDATORY. Grade is based off of "Only Tests" or "Tests and Homework" whichever one is higher. FAST PACED!
If you can learn math on your OWN, you might be ok. No clarity, very low teaching skills. I put a lot of effort, but still failed. Rushes through everything, even if he knows you do not understand the material. Take another course/teacher if you can. I did great in the beginning, but right after the drop period, things got very difficult.DoNOTtake!
Great teacher! He is nice, funny, and tries to explain operations management in a way that the students can understand. It does take a lot of time to understand the material. Do ALL of the homework. It is the best way to prepare for the test. 3 tests, around 6 problems each. Take him over summer! GREAT!!!!
I'll start this off by saying math is my worst subject and passed because I turned in every homework assignment. This course is mostly algebra and calculus, so be prepared for lots of equations. The professor is nice enough, though he's one of those math teachers that just doesn't understand that math isn't everyone's strongpoint. Buy the book.
Very funny guy but doesn't really teach much. You have to learn on your own with the text book.
He is confusing. I might have had trouble understanding some of the concepts if I didn't already learn most of it... he's teaches ok most of the time. He's kind of funny kind of... and is ok as a person... teaching wise, i think he could be a little clearer... I suggest using a binder for this class. a notebook is fine tho.
This class isn't that bad if you already know most of the material, but i suggest if you don't then do all the homework and it's a good study guide for the tests which are like every two weeks and attend every class. If you already know most of the material you basically only come in on the test days.Going to class and homework is optional-no final
Mr. Wing is not a helpful professor. Taking his math class was like taking a class from a textbook, but paying for someone to tell you what your homework is. Tests occur every week and a half. Explanation is rare, and vague at best and most of the time he sidesteps students' questions because he claims he "doesn't understand" them.
Attendance doesnt matter at all. Syllabus says the homework that needs to be done every class, and it is optional to turn it in. Tests are easy if you do all the homework and study and he gives the tests back the following monday. Tests are every 2 weeks on friday. Final is a regular test. teacher goes off subject a lot. student manual helps A LOT
umm... yea, i looked him up b4 i took the class on this website and thought his ratings were low bc the material itself is hard but NO this dude really just cant teach. well if you can take a dif prof then do but if not then just be ready to learn on your own.
Horrible teacher! do not take! If you dont know the subject matter already you will not pass. Not a helpful teacher what so ever.
Dont take this class if you are not a math person.the professor is no help at all.he takes attendance but it is not mandatory just as long you do well on the tests which he gives about every 1 1/2 -2 weeks.grades are based on all tests and homework if it helps grade.hw is given but is not mandatory.do it if your grade is low.
Seriously...top 3 worst teachers I've ever had at SFSU. I went to every class and still didn't understand by the end of the semester. Absolutely ridiculous. Seems as though he has a vendetta against his students...
Great teacher. The only class that was worth going to during the whole semester. Easy grader, gives a lot of tests but they are fairly simple, and is pretty funny. Makes the subject interesting. Highly recommended.
Okay, this is one of those classes where you basically have to teach yourself. For the most part class is pretty cool, he always goes off topic to tell a story. Pretty funny guy. If you do the HW and understand most of it you'll do fine. His tests are basically the HW. Funny guy
Pretty hard class, but if you do HW you should do good on tests. No midterm or final, just a test every two weeks. Plus he checks HW and if you do most he'll count it as another test grade (recommend you do ALL of it, he does random checks). Kind of a teach yourself class, but still pretty cool class. Hard but fun
Attendance is NOT mandatory, but try not to miss his lectures. He'll actually explain the topic point by point so if you miss a lecture you?re screwed. But if you miss a class you can always read the book. Homework for us was not mandatory, but if you turn it in, it may help raise your final grade. Overall, he?s a pretty decent prof.
He's a nice proffessor. If you are good at math, this class is so easy for you. If you don't like math, should take another professor. There are 3 tests, all of them are solving problems. Understand homeworks and lectures in class, you will get an A easily. Should take his class over summer.
Like people have said, sort of a teachyourself class. Attendance not mandatory, but I recommend going if you aren't good at math. Plus he randomly checks homework that could help your grade in the end. Assigned a lot of homework though. Very "by the book" kind of guy. Abides by the syllabus and schedule pretty closely. Tests often, none cumulative.
Pit your soul against WING, the leanest, meanest mathmagician at SF State. This man will ROCK YOUR FACE. He's a fuel-injected rocket man. A LION of LEARNING. He WILL NOT STOP until you understand. And if you still don't understand, HE WILL MAKE YOU UNDERSTAND. This class may be too intense for pregnant women and retarded people.
This class was painful. Mr. Wing doesn't explain things very well and is often not much help. I'm not horrible at math, but I just don't understand what the hell he's talking about and then he rambles about stupid stuff all the time. Very annoying. He's a nice man but I hated his teaching and I hated this class. I would definitely not recommend it.
I seriously don't understand some of the comments. This is DS 110. Not Math 226. This is as basic as math can get at the university level. If you're complaining about not being able to understand certain math concepts, it's not Wing's fault, it's you. I hate it when students blame their idiocy and bad study habits on instructors. Read the chapters.
Professor Wing is a good mathematician and is extremely helpful. He does have a tendency to rush through his lectures. On the other hand, if you are having problems with the concepts, do visit the tutoring center. If you are a business major, definitely take this class in lieu of Math 110, because this Calculus class is business based.
Wing is a great teacher. He is very good at explaining and breaking down any problems he assigns. If you do the homework assignments, then you will definitely do well on the test. He's also very approachable and is willing to help students. Highly recommended
Agreed with comment below with this class not being recommended for dumb people. Highly recommended
He's good teacher, though he's Chinese, he speaks native English. The only problem is he doesn't add me even though there's room avaliable.
He is a good teacher when he is not rambling on about something. He is nice and helpful, but not always the easiest to understand. be prepared to teach yourself from the textbook. overall, not too hard.
Although i hate math and it's like a foreign language to me, Prof Wing didn't do a too bad of a job explaining things. The online homework was useful too.
wing is a phooey teacher. if you understand calculus then by all means take his class. he is clear by what he expects for you to know for the tests , but he is a terrible at explaining. if you know your stuff, take him. attendance isnt mandatory and there are weekly quizzes to boost your grade.
wing isn't so bad at lecturing although he gets easily sidetrack and starts rambling with his random stories. failing one test can have a huge impact on your whole grade. i went to class once a week, self-teach myself by reading the book, and ended up with a B- for the class.
Wing is a good teacher. He explains the stuff in class. I didn't study for the first test and got a C. I studied for the rest of them and got 100% on most of them. Try not to mess up one of the tests because it is hard to get your grade back up. He checks the hw ten times at random but it is not mandatory. No final, but a test on the last chapter.
Teaching isn't exactly Wing's strong point. His class is pretty easy. A test after a few chapters. No midterm or final. Nothing comprehensive. He goes off topic a lot. He's a very smart man, but not great at explaining. If your bad at math, I'd say avoid him.
If I wasn't always late for his 9:00am class, especially on test days, I could have gotten a better grade. Wing keeps things simple and doesn't abuse the textbook. He teaches thoroughly and really specifies what test problems are going to look like and types of multiple choice answers to sway away from. Yes, people. Multiple choice.
Best Math teacher I ever had.
The nice thing about Professor Wing is that he speaks loud and clearly unlike many math professors at SFSU. All test are multiple choice and are given by chapter, no midterm or final. Hw is done online and attendance is not mandatory. You have to be an idiot not to pass Wing's class.
I would not take him again. He does not grade on a curve for his summer school DS412 class. He does not allow notes/cheat sheets on any of his tests. There is no extra credit. He uses the book often. If you can take it with another person that would be your best bet. Friendly guy,but grades hard.Three exams 35/35/30 homework relevant but not graded
The other person who reviewed Professor Wing for DS 412 probably didn't study. Professor Wing is an awesome guy, one of my favorite professors, and the class is run with a light atmosphere. If you have a problem, go to his office hours. He's very helpful. It's correct, no curve, no extra credit, but if you go to class and do the homework, it's easy
He is the best math/ds teacher I ever had. Very clear and kept my attention throughout the class. Relates real life stories to the subject to explain applications. Attend class and do the homework to pas the class. Some people have taken DS412 for 4 times. The class is not easy but if you attend and pay attention, you will pass. Take DS412 in summe
He isn't that great, but this class is easier to handle than Math 110 and he is the only option. Tests are multiple choice, by the chapter, no notes and the homework is online.
Doesn't prepare you for whats on the exam, only says there will be one on these sections, exams are inconsistent, only believes in memorization and the thing about this no excuses ideology is very true. There are some Math 110 professors that are much better than him, so go take them instead. the only thing he is good at is speaking clearly
Great teacher in my eyes hw is online which is extremely easy and you can get 100% on it everytime ill bet you. If you pay attention in class you will understand the material because he explains the material in a much simpler way than the book does.
This isn't an easy class if you don't make an effort to succeed, which means you actually have to go to class, take notes, and study. No pop quizzes/tests. If you make an effort to go to class, you will learn shortcuts to solving certain problems as he simplifies the formulas from those in the textbook.
He doesn't really teach, just blabs, sometimes about math. He doesn't really explain concepts or sometimes over explains until they make no sense. He gives about 6 tests on each Ch. He uses an online book & HW website which taught me a lot more than him. It's funny, I did better on the tests w/o attending class than when I did.
The class isn't that bad. All the tests are MULTIPLE CHOICE! Every now and again there will be a free response question. His examples are simple and too the point. I did the 8am class so not a lot of people showed up. If you show up every now and again you should pass with a C at least.
If you make an effort you should do well. Just be sure to attend the lectures and do the homework. He's very straightforward, aside from some odd little anecdotes he throws into lectures, and though Wing may appear harsh and pedantic at times, he really does want his students to succeed; he simply won't baby you through the class, that's all.
Showing up to class every day, actively paying attention, and studying a week in advance per test, I still did poorly. The online HW taught me 10x better than he did as a teacher. Over half the class got under 50% on tests and he still doesn't curve.
I think he is a great professor although lots of students gave him a low grade. He cares students and teaches clearly. All the tests are from HW. Make sure you know how to do all the HW, then you can get a A easily. Don't blame on him if you don't do HW and do bad on tests.
R. Wing is a good professor. He really does teach you and doesnt trick you on the test. If you go to his office hour he will really go out of his way to help you. Pay attention in class, do the homework, master the problems, and you will be ok. I dont know why he received a low rating, he is was very friendly and really tried to teach.
Didnt read the book. Didnt do homework. Got a B. He doesnt trick you on exams. As long as you take notes and study them, you will do really well!
I've taken DS 412 more than once and I recommend you take it in the summer with professor Wing. He is clear-cut on what he will test you on the exams. As long as you take good notes from his lectures and do your homework you will understand the material. Go to his office hrs if you don't understand the material, he is helpful.
it's obvious that Wing wrote positive reviews for himself, given the context. Class consisted of 3 exams,35pts/35pts/30pts,no curve.doesn't try to "trick" you, but he is hard to follow& is lazy to write down crucial steps to problems.Better off learning on your own or w/study group. Textbook is vital. He's really nice but I cant recommend him.
Terrible class, I went almost everyday and still learned close to nothing. He rants an neglects to ACTUALLY teach you anything. Online homework is crucial and teaches 10x better than him. Tests are hard and every other week. I would not recommend him to anyone.
He is a cool guy, his test are always 20 multiple choices questions. & no final! he may be hard to understand at times because he has his own ways of teaching things, so just look in the book if your lost. i passed every test with a B or above. it's nothing tricky.
Go to tutoring, he is not helpful! Makes you feel dumb for asking questions...
Although class isn't mandatory, it would help A LOT if you showed up. he goes over many tricks and shortcuts that you can take that the book doesn't teach you. he shares jokes and everything that relate to the topic that we are learning about. above all, all you need to do is just understand the equations and all that, & you'll do good.
If you're the type that learns best from the book and from the online homework, he is the worst professor to take. I learn best that way, but he teaches you his way, which you can't find online and get really confused when you try to take the exam because he taught us one way, but the book and homework teaches you another way.
He doesn't teach! He literally says, do this problem, and then sits down at a desk and doesn't even explain how he got the answer! I got in a argument with him today because I called him out on an equation he was doing wrong and he didn't believe me. Unless you're good at teaching yourself, save yourself a lot of trouble and time, and don't take him
Even after going to class literally every single day, I am barely going to pass with a C-. He doesn't teach, I learned everything I know from teaching myself through the online homework. A test on every chapter, but questions are nothing like the homework. His course is a joke.
Let me start off with he's actually a very good prof and u do learn(if u go to class).BUT what he teaches u will only help with doing the online hw.The many tests are VERY DIFFICULT and majority of your grade is based off the tests. He is a great person but theres NO EX.CRED and 70% of my class had to withdraw.Dont sign up.Go take MATH110
DO NOT take his class if you're not a genius at math. He skips steps and doesn't understand where or why students get lost in his lectures. He does not do extra credit and the homework done online is different than what he teaches and tests us on. Take a different teacher! Save yourself! More than 50% of students dropped. He has no mercy
Professor was really easy. No midterms, no finals, just nothing but chapter quizzes. Homework is online. Mostly shows shortcuts on how to do problems. He may go off topic in the middle of explaining how to do a certain problem.
Gave me a 68% and would not work with me at all to get a 70% Retook it with someone else and got a B+
In the beginning attendance was mandatory. He is super easy. yo just gotta go to class or read the book for the test every other week. there is homework but if you super lazy then that why you don't pass. there is no midterms or finals. got a C but its because i didn't try my fullest. great professor.
Great teacher, he really wants you to understand the material and makes it pretty easy. Online homework and book are very simple, he grades tests quickly and the tests will be exactly like in-class problems. Nice guy too, likes to tell stories, etc. He makes business statistics a lot less scary than it sounds. Fair grader & willing to help you.
When he says attendance is optional, he doesn't mention that you need to attend in order to answer tricky questions on the test. Likeable guy if you can get past his sarcastic exterior. Almost didn't pass because the final was a doozy and we weren't given much time.
Easy class, need the book to pass. Must follow with the chapters and do the online homework to understand. He is not good at explaining things in any other way than what he knows, and he gets very confusing at times. Just do the online HW, he gives chapter tests. No final, no midterms, easy A - just DO THE ONLINE HW!
Worst math teacher I have ever had by far. He was very disorganized and not personable at all. The tests and homework were ridiculously hard and he was unwilling to help the students. He once made me make up a test at 7 am. I definitely do not recommend him.
Avoid taking a class with Wing! He doesn't teach at all. His lectures are confusing, and he goes off topic telling random stories often. He says he "doesn't trick you" but then the test questions are much harder and different than the homework and textbook. To pass the class you will HAVE to teach yourself, with the textbook or other resources.
If you go to class you will be fine. All of his tests are multiple choice and he tells you what will be on the test and what will not. If you only do online homework and don't go to class there will be surprises on the test because he will sometimes teach extra things not included in the book. Overall a fairly straight forward class.
Be prepared to teach yourself everything. Tests are designed for teacher level of understanding so practice all the hard questions in the book. Work hard early in semester because the finals 3 tests will drop your grade.Test every week.
The class wasn't all that easy, but you can learn almost everything from doing the online homework. His lectures go by quickly, because sometimes he tells you his stories about his life. He doesn't explain very good, so you have to make sure you pay attention all the time. Got a B, from averaging a C+ on every test.
Avoid Prof. Wing! He spends class going over HW and telling his stories. You have to learn everything on your own time. HW every class and tests every week. Tests are tricky!! He just doesn't care about his students, I am an "A" student and I struggled with his Calc class to get a "C"
Took his summer course and it was intense. I've taken him for ds110, 210 and now 412. He knows his stats, and he is by far the most fair grader I've met at State. Although I couldn't keep up with the class when learning the new material, I left knowing the basics that let me understand the hw material. Three tests, book for hw required.
He is really easy, just go to class, pay attention and actually try. It's all multiple choice
Very engaging and clear. Tells a ton of awkwardly funny jokes, and very helpful when it comes to having to miss class or change exam times.
OKay rick wing was my favorite professor at sfsu. He comes off as a bit intimidating at the beginning of the semester. Because he is a very structured man. But he is probably the funniest and the most entertaining professor I have ever had. He will randomly tell you stories about his child hood. Just do you homework, and try to get to know him.
I wouldn't recommend this class to anyone who isn't skilled at independent study. Hes not that great at explaining, and gets side tracked a lot, so you'll have to be good at not getting side tracked with him. Tests are multiple choice--which are easy if you study a few days in advance with a friend.DO THE ONLINE HOMEWORK, IT MAKES A DIFFERENCE
Rick Wing is a quality DS110 teacher. I took his class and loved how he explained proofs of any formula, and has a real passion for math. I had to take his class twice bc I hadnt taken any math courses in about two years, however his passion for math and having it make sense to everyone who is inside the room.
So although it's not mandatory to come to every single class--I was in a class of maybe 30 and only half come--highly recommend you do and make sure to bring your book because he references it a lot. Very straight forward class, he does tell stories but it's usually fairly related. Great class if you took Calculus, you may struggle if you didn't.
If you take this class then be prepared to teach yourself every lesson. His lessons are hard to follow and he doesn't like to answer questions in class. If you haven't already taken calculus then make sure you DO NOT take this class. I only got up to algebra 2 in high school I had to learn all the basics on my own. Just stay away if you can.
He doesn't try to trick you, and he goes over the material clearly and repetitively to help make it stick for the exams. Just be sure to ask questions if you have them. Also, he gives you your exam grades right when you hand them in, which is possibly the greatest thing ever. He pontificates, but if you pay attention it won't confuse you.
Wing is good professor that I never met. The notes he wrote in class is very helpful if you pay attention. There are 4 exams, and most of them come from HW. However, the HW is NOT REQUIRED, you don't need do if you don't want. The Attendance is NOT mandatory. The best way help you pass the class is to learn together with your classmates.
I just don't understand how he has this low ratings. I took his class in summer, and it was an amazing experience. 4 hours lectures will go too quick, because his teaching methods are excellent. He really knows what he is talking about and his method of explaining it is extra ordinary. His test are very easy, if you do your homework. Go take him.
Summer school- He gives simple examples in class and tests on material he DIDN'T COVER OR SAY WOULD BE ON THE TEST the very next day. Tests are multiple choice so if you made an arithmetic error, you get the whole answer wrong despite understanding the concept. No notes, no formulas given for tests. Plan on tons of memorization. Take math at Laney!
Very laid back professor. Very clear with his examples. Tests are easy as long as you do the homework. One of the bests professors at SFSU
Took this professor during the summer and am glad to have taken him. If you are planning on taking him for ds412- do it with him. The only sucky part about his class is there are no notes allowed on the exams and he says he won't trick you on exams but once you get it, there's at least on question to throw you off guard.
Very amicable, laid-back, and easy to understand. You don't even feel like you're in school when you take his class because he's so laid back it's almost like you're having a conversation. My only regret is that your grade is from your tests only, not homework: I had a bad test day and my grade dropped a whole letter.
Mr. Wing is the best Math teacher, this class is great if you haven't taken a math class in a while. Homework is online, the platform gives you step by step examples of similar home work questions, you can just change the equation to have your numbers and learn along the way. Every chp has its own test, all multiple choice. You can't fail!
4 tests (usually 5-6 problems) based on the homework and in-class examples. The homework assignments are sometimes changed and he doesn't post updates on iLearn, so you MUST show up to each class. He likes telling stories and relating them to the lecture. Homework is short and easy, just practice until you understand and it's an easy A.
to be honest , his tests are hard even if you study!!!!! i come to class everyday and do the hw and still get bad grades in the test. its only 4 tests and project and he doenst curve!! the class is only 50 min and sometimes its hard to finish the test on time , beacuse some questions took 10-15 min and he usaully gives 6 questions.
I really wanted to like Professor Wing. I'm not good at math so part of the problem was I had no business in a calculus class, but you're only graded on tests and somehow the online homework is eventually factored in. His classes are just him giving examples on the board and I didn't learn anything this semester.
only 4 exams and an excel final on linear programming. The exams are easy as long as you do all the hw assignments, but you will have to do a lot of self-teaching. Wing is too fast paced during lectures and loves to take shortcuts. This course is passable, as long as you don't slack on the assignments and bomb an exam. 1/3 of the class withdrew
He skips through his lectures quickly. Loves to take shortcuts when doing problems but doesn't really explain how to do the problem. If you don't do the homework you're pretty screwed bc his test are based on his hw. I would highly recommend taking DS 412 with another professor. Rick is ehhh
This professor opened my eyes to all the mistakes I had made before and help me become a better overall math student. He takes you through all of the basics so that you can do your best on the exams. Lots of exams (one every 2-3 weeks), but they are short and also help you maximize your average so no need to freak about one failed test.
There's test for every chapters. The grade includes all the tests and the computerized homework. No midterm, no finals. He's very straight forward and Real. If you struggling, be a semi hard worker and go to his office hour. He doesn't play around, hit him up, and he'll solve the question as easy as making noodles. No joke.
He is honestly my favorite professor at SFSU. He is really passionate about his teachings and makes the material easy to understand. If you do the homework you should be able to pass the class with a good grade. His tests are exactly like the homework. The slackers in the class do not like him, but I would say he is definitely more than fair.
Attend class because he gives shortcuts in solving problems. If the book gives 24 steps, he will minimize it to 10 steps. Which leads me to the fact that its hard to skip class. Moreover, he is hard to understand when lecturing because he skips through a lot of material and steps. If confused, just ask him. He will entertain your question.
I took his DS 412 class did his homework, attend every class, but still have to withdrawal very confusing professor and don't dare to ask questions he won't answers
Took his class during the summer time and it wasn't the best decision I've made. When reviewing questions in class he would always try to blur out what you're supposed to do versus the shortcuts he thinks you should take do instead. Even if you don't understand. Attended every lecture did all of the homework and still didn't get the grade I wanted.
Don't take this course with Wing, extremely unclear. Hard and plentiful exams (one every other week, even once a week). Won't answer questions, veers off topic easily. It doesn't help that he carries himself as if he is the smartest person on the planet.
Professor Wing is hard to follow during class & is easily distracted from the lecture. He mostly just opens the book and lectures on the spot by looking at the examples. A test after every chapter. Online homework for every chapter, every section. You have to study outside of class in order to pass.
Rick was a great teacher. DS110 is a hard class but he tries to make it as clear and understandable as possible. I did not get the grade I was hoping for but I wont complain because I know i could have studied a bit more. If you do your homework assignments and ask questions, you will get a good grade. HW same/similar problems as exams
All he does it put numbers that are important on the problem on the board. This wouldn't be a problem if he didn't speed through lectures and taught us inefficient ways to solve the problems. He says that they're shortcuts but honestly, it's longer and more complicated than necessary. I really wanted to like this subject but his ill teaching :(
Definitely not an easy course, he does expect his students to already know all previous math so he does not spend much time reviewing old topics, but he is an overall good math professor. Weekly homework assignments due online, graded only on HW and tests. Not a bad teacher, he did help when people had questions in class but it's still calc
This class is not easy. It has structure but also not at the same time. In class, we go over problems and find their solution but we don't go into why things happen or how. Attending class isn't mandatory but I would recommend going to them because the less you go the more confusing it becomes. Access to the homework costs $130 which is awful.
There are tests and homework for every chapter. Tests are similar to computerized homework, if you do your homework and review it before taking tests. Your will get a good grade pass this class. No midterm and no finals. He updates grade immediately after tests, so students know how they are doing.
Super friendly professor. Don't hesitate to ask him questions if you don't understand material. Homework is for practice, never graded. 4 exams no final, exams are not multiple choice but they are fair. Pretty standard class. Study and take exam and attend lectures and you will pass.
Took his DS110 class and it was based on tests for every chapter and the homework was on Pearson. He grades the test right after you take it. There was no midterm or final for his class. Not hard to pass if you study and do all the online homework.
Recommend this professor! He is fair, straightforward on test. If you go to class and learn, you will surely pass with a good grade.
I would never take this professor again! Lectures are awful he will start to write and says "oh no.. um no thats not right. Sorry " does this all through each and every lecture too!! I ended up teaching myself and it was extremely difficult. Only 50 mins on tests and they are every 2 weeks! Also material not covered in hw and is on test.
Genuinely nice professor. He's funny and wants to help you learn, however, if you're not that good at math, I would reconsider taking one of his courses. Lectures can be hard to understand, I sort of taught myself the lessons using the textbook and barely passed. Overall good guy.
The professor is very good. Although sometimes his method is a little complicated, he is very patient and does his homework infinitely. I think the professor is very nice. I have chosen his class for two consecutive semesters.
He introduces each lesson by explaining how the problems are solved before he lets us try to solve them. He only asks easy questions when he teaches. The textbook & the website (Pearson) we use are helpful and the tests are based on the homework problems. As long as you're engaged with the material, his class will not be a problem at all.
This class is fun, and not that hard. Mr. Wing is nice. If you didn't get it in the class just watch the zoom recording. English is my second language and I'm so bad at math, but I still get about 90% so far.
Highly recommend taking Professor Wing. Im glad I took his class. He is funny, caring, and nice. His lectures are always clear. Lots of examples given to make sure you understand the materials. Open to questions and explain them clearly. Four exams in total, which are pretty easy and straightforward if you do the homework. Book is not required.
One of the best professors at SFSU. The class is well-organized, and the grading system is very clear. The material, though not easy, is doable if you really want to learn.
More tests than average, however, they're short and simple. Uses Pearson. A clear teaching style, allows plenty of time to complete homework. Goes over all material you'll be tested on, if you take notes in class and complete all the homework you'll get an A. Lectures are recorded as well which was useful.
The class itself isn't hard but it was confusing when he did change his grading from average to cumulative towards the middle of the semester. It's pretty easy to pass the class since Pearson gives you many examples and the professor will explain if you ask for help.
super hard to learn from, with no organized lectures at all. I did not take pre-cal in high school but he expects everyone to remember algebra without giving any refresher examples. Goes over random questions with no explanation and does all the arithmetic in his head. Was super lost in the class and the only thing that saved me was the textbook.
Professor Wing is an outstanding person. He is super funny and keeps the class light and fresh, despite the dread of doing calculus. He does like to incorporate the class and ask questions but overall it is to make sure people are paying attention and understand the material. Just stay on top of the homework and prepped for tests and youll be great
He goes over every homework chapter/ uses class time to review for tests. There is no midterm or final in this class, but we do test on every chapter. Funny and chill and lets you use your notes and other online tools to do tests. There are no textbooks we just have to buy this online program that we use to submit assignments.
Professor Wing is such a relatable character. He is always available for questions. Everything is through MyMathLab and tests are mostly assigned for at home. He allows open book and even teaches students how to use Desmos. Take this professor for DS 110!!!!!
Took the class this semester and greatly enjoy it. Very clear on his lecture. Made the material easy to understand. He is very easy to approach. Answer all questions on the timely matter. Exams are base on material taught in the lessons. No trick question. Do the homework, you'll be fine for the exams. 100% love the class and respect the man.
He utilizes Pearson MathLab. Makes himself available during office hours, and after class. Has a cool demeanor, and I could tell that he genuinely wants his students to do well. Offers extra credit, which is nice. I am a returning student and had not taken any "math class" in over 20 years. If I can get an A in this class, YOU CAN.
Overall good person, wants students to do well, and tries his best. However, it is tough to follow. Doesn't show why things happen and isn't thorough. Has the illusion that everyone is a math major. If you haven't taken any Calc class STAY AWAY!! otherwise, get ready to teach yourself everything. MUST attend and study for a chance of passing.
All he does is have the MyMathLab do his teaching and in order to understand concepts you have to do a ton of time consuming studying on your own. All he does is rambles and has a very unstructured lectures that can be easily lost. A good 90% of the class was lost and couldn't understand what the textbook was saying without guidance from someone
Professor Wing is a relatable and funny instructor. The class uses MyMathLab and allows open-book tests. Unstuck study was a helpful study tool alongside the textbook. Overall a manageable course if you stay engaged.
He was the absolute worst! His lectures are all over the place and are very unorganized. He writes all over the board and it's very hard to follow. He also just assumes the class already knows what he is talking about and barley asks the class on their understanding. Another thing, it is hard to raise your grade the moment it drops. No EC just HW.
Rick Wing is a really chill professor teaching a hectic subject. The class is very fast pace and while the reviews aren't entirely wrong about him assuming you know math you can still ask questions. The homework was usually more difficult than the exams so if you could do the hw you're fine. Overall hectic but not impossible!
