uncooperative and cannot speak english.
hands down, rick ye is the worst teacher I have ever had.
The class in not that hard, especially if you can learn on your own. Ye is hard to understand but the tests weren't too bad.
Worst teacher ever, no wonder he doesn't pass out teacher evaluation forms. Tests are totally off the wall.
He is not so bad as many wrote. He is honest and polite, at least. His feeling of students is poor, I agree. There were about five students in the class, but he spoke if he were in front of one hundred not bothering if students followed him.
The class shouldn't be as difficult as he makes it for some people. Cares less about the students than any other professor
worst teacher i have had. He is hard to understand boring. He goes off on tangents about a problem for an entire lecture then doesn't put it on any of the tests. Lecture does not prepare you for tests and he does not communicate well. Avoid this guy!
I thought previous comments about Ye were somewhat unjustified, or maybe he's changed his ways. Possibly he teaches 5B better than 34A. In any case, his tests were definitely not unreasonable, and he is enthusiastic about the material. Contrary to previous comments, his English is fine. Be warned that about 60% of your grade depends on the final.
Dr. Ye is extremely bright and seems to be good at problem solving however uses a high degree of mathematical sophistication in his proofs which leaves many lost. He is extremely lazy(never collected homework cause he didn't want to grade) and is unapproachable outside of class however very polite. Only gave 15 min of office hours each day.
With CLAS, this class was a breeze, his tests were fair and non-trivial. Do the homework to understand the subject and you are on track to getting a good grade in the class.
Great mathematician, bad educator. Does not speak in language of students, definitely does go on tangents that are irrelevant to class material.
Ye does not connect very well with students - I learned far more from CLAS and the TA than I ever did from lecture. Assigns TONS of homework, often too much to finish (and its only worth 10% of your grade). While he does have an accent, his English is perfectly understandble. Tests arent TOO terrible, but midterm & final are 30 & 60% of your grade
Horrible professor!!! You can't understand anything he talks about in class and his language in totally different from normal language. He gave partial credit for his midterm but for his final he changed his mind and didn't give partial credit at all!! You definitely have to take CLAS for this class its will be the only way you understand the topic
The first time I had him in 3C (i think) he was very hard to understand and i retook the class... but after having him again in 5b i realized you should just read what he writes instead of listening to his jibberish... tests are easy (THANK GOD!) though lots of hw.
Ye does not connect well with students. His class notes are useful and he is understandable, but his homework and tests are generally harder than what he personally presents. CLAS definitely recommended.
Horrible, horrible lectures. Completely mislead the entire class this quarter on the material that would be covered on the final. Had an amazingly easy midterm. Class average was a 90/100. Final was insanely difficult as the material mainly consisted of the last two weeks of class that was very weakly covered. Should have spentmore time with topics
Vague prof who jumps around in the book, go to 'pauls math notes' on the internet, that website saved me in the class, the book and the prof imo were not too helpful
His lectures can range from pretty good to not very helpful at all, but I recommend going to his lectures anyway as some of the things he does in lecture are likely to end up on his tests. Gave 25% worth of extra credit points on the midterm. Really loves critical point problems. Final was harder but curves the class.
He is one of the worst teachers at UCSB. He is very incomprehensible....have the time I am trying to figure what he is saying rather than actually comprehending the material. The midterm is pretty easy, but he made the final impossible. Everyone was there the whole three hours and even the TA's said it was one of the worst finals they had seen.
Bad just plain Bad teacher....independent study and/or CLAS with Jesse/Alex is a must. uses problems/exams from previous years so use google.. allowed any size notecard on final so I used a poster: like half the test was on my notecard lol
Only thing he does in class are trivial examples and examples from book. Pray you don't have him.
just completely bombed that final. it was even harder than the midterm. hw is webwork and not too bad... exams are super difficult versions of the relatively easy concepts covered in the class. he intentionally makes the exams longer than is possible because he curves.
i would try to take another prof if you can. he is difficult to understand and often pays no attn to the class to see if they are following. you really have to pay extreme attn and ask questions and tests are insanely hard. he curves favorably though
Another horrible UCSB math professor. Very difficult to understand with accent and weird logical progressions of his derivations. Section was a joke, TA useless if he even showed up. Homework moderate, CLAS is where I really learned. I was pretty mad because went into final with a solid A and came out with a C, someone ran out in frustration...
The worst teacher I have ever had! AVOID AT ALL COSTS! He has made it clear he prioritizes his research and grad work over our course. Spends as little time on our class as possible. We were unable to get a grader for our homework and he refuses to provide solutions. No way of knowing where you stand in the class. TERRIBLE PROFESSOR!!
He's a terrible professor He has office hour but seldom there at office. The tests are out of wall. He cancelled our weekly homework because there is no grader. Then he adds the percentage of homework to the final. He sometimes speaks Chinese in class. He always skip the questions that asked in class even makes me think he doesn't know the answer.
Actually I think professor Ye is a really nice guy, he is not give us really hard time on homeworks or midterms and finals. all materials he tested us were the things he taught in classes. He is really serious about teaching and willing to answer all the question(you just have to ask!!!!)
He is THE worst professor of all time. He knows a lot about math but has absolutely no idea how to teach. The 2 midterms were easy but the final was a nightmare. Only about 40 kids showed regularly to a class of over 250. He is super unclear, goes off on class-long tangents, and doesn't communicate to the students at all. No way to know your grade
Professor Ye was usually unprepared for lecture. He was very unclear with his teaching and although he is a good mathematician, he struggle to communicate concepts to the class. Most people stopped showing up. He also didn't use Gauchospace so there is no way of knowing your grade at any given point.
Course material is straight forward. Always presents example proofs and often shows different ones than from the textbook to let you see the multiple ways to approach things. Lecture is sometimes silly when he spends the whole time on one big proof but typically the concept demonstrated is essential. Tests on the basics, nothing tricky.
Professor Ye was very clear, he often took time to turn around and explain concepts in depth instead of busily writing on the board all lecture. Tests were very fair, Webwork due weekly. I am a math major and I thought he was very knowledgable about the subject and fair with his teaching. I had lecture at 8am but rarely missed. Used the book A LOT.
Let me begin by saying that I think Professor Ye is a good lecturer. I came to class every week and got a lot out of them. That being said, nothing that I got out of lecture was applicable to the tests. A question on the midterm was poorly worded, costing me 20 points and the final consisted of all near impossible questions, nothing like in lecture
Ye is really good at teaching you the material, very insightful if your math sucks, but he can write on that chalkboard at unreal speed, and it can be pretty hard to get everything in your notes. Homework is really fair, final was unreasonably tough. If you get stuck on an exam problems, try all the math tricks you know until you can solve it.
The class itself is hard, but his midterm exam consisted of 20 extra credit points wich was extremely generous. He understood it was an intense class and for the final he asked the class what method (in classtake home) would work best for us. HW is tough but nothing like the Exams, they will put you at an advantage but READ THE TEXTBOOK!
Lectures are boring and make the subject more confusing. He has a strong accent. The homework is not similar to the tests. On tests, if you get the correct answer but your explanation isn't "correct enough" you won't get full credit. I would not take a class with him again. If there's no other option, then sign up for CLAS. It saved me.
Although Professor Ye's lectures weren't the most clear or organized, he seems to care about his students' success. He made it a point to ask us how many review days we wanted before the final, and (notoriously) uploaded an outline of the final to review on his site. Homework was not comprehensive, but the exams were easy. Go to section!!!
His lectures were confusing and very unorganized. I didn't get anything out of them and basically taught myself by doing the book problems at the end of the chapters. They help a lot for the tests. Make sure you use CLAS because it is a lifesaver. I wouldn't take a class with him again but it is doable if you work hard and have no other choice.
It seems that he doesn't prepare for his lectures. He doesn't explain concepts clearly, and usually makes simple things confusing. The exams are hard because it is always "impossible to assign new homework due to some system trouble". The worst teacher I've ever had.
Mr. Ye assigns a good amount of homework, but he gives a lot of it in a short period of time. If I were you, make sure to go to section and make a study group. Honestly, I don't think I would have passed without it. Also, he lets you have a notecard for the midterms and final, but no calculator is allowed. Good luck!
All in all I think the class was fine. He's a little hard to understand at times and his explanations aren't very clear. We had 10 homework assignment (all online) but sometimes he would assign 2-3 due one week. Textbook not required. Midterms were challenging but we got a cheatsheet and he posts solutions on GauchoSpace after so you can study them
Terrible professor. He does not know how to teach/get his points across. Relied fully on outside sources to get a decent grade in his class. DO NOT TAKE MATH WITH HIM.
Horrible professor, the worst I have had
Unorganized. Syllabus was a joke and had no valuable information. 2/3 of the class including myself stopped going to lecture half way through because I found studying on my own was a better use of time. If you want to pass go to CLAS and section. Final counts for 50% of grade and he doesn't give you any kind of prep for it.
If you enjoy teaching yourself & dislike going to lecture, this class fits the bill! I took Ye for Linear Algebra, and Khan Academy was my god. Watched Khan videos on double speed for hrs. Survived the class with an A... tests aren't actually hard. He gives pretty straight criteria, a notecard, and for the final a study guide. Avoid if possible.
Really unorganized lectures, stopped going after a few weeks because I didn't learn anything from him. If you get him prepare to self-study, I'd recommend khanacademy and Patrick JMT.
This professor is horrible I took him without any prior knowledge of calculus. My friends and CLAS probably saved me from getting a f in his class. His lectures are totally useless and unorganized and you don't need the book unless you want to self teach through it. AVOID THIS PROFESSOR AT ALL COSTS. If you do get him though do the hw thoroughly.
He really listens to students' opinions about difficulty of exams. No quiz, solid homework. Logically explanation for concepts. Patient after class.
He really does not know how to teach well. The only saving grace is that he is flexible about grading and heavily curves the class, but other than that I would not recommend Ye at all.
The fact that he doesn't show up to office hours is enough to give him a bad review. Good luck reaching him outside of class; Emails will come back in 2 days. He does not seem to care about the class' understanding and dodges questions. Sometimes by ignoring Qs. I would do whatever you can to not take this professor if you want to learn anything.
He gives clear notes and easy homework. If you work for his class you will get a good grade. He's also really helpful during office hour
I think his tests and homework are easy and straightforward. Even though sometimes he is disorganized in class, you can still follow him by doing some reading after class.
Even though his accent makes him hard to understand sometimes. But his midterms and finals are really straightforward and doable.
He is the best professor. The exams are straightforward.
He's a great choice for Math 8. You'll need to read the textbook to pass the course though. His lectures are helpful but not enough to fully understand the material. The exams are not very hard but not easy either. He is understanding and helpful both in and outside of class. Section is helpful as well. Math 8 is fairly tough but Prof. Ye is solid.
Based on the dates of past reviews, it is clear he has improved as a prof. over time. Lectures are mostly clear -- occasionally he makes jumps in logic but will answer questions well if asked. He lectures following the text closely. Exams very straightforward, but few questions per so double/triple check. Last 3 lectures weren't on final.
Pros: +Easy/to be expected exams Cons: -Ignores emails -Occasionally does not show up to lecture -Proofs are hard to follow -Does not come to class with a lecture plan -Lecture is a waste of time Conclusion: If given an option, do not take Ye. He is easily the worst math prof. I've had at SB. If you must, just stay home and read the textbook.
Ye's lectures are close to meaningless if this is your first time taking Math8. Almost all proofs of textbook propositions, there are few examples done that are going to be notable for your understanding. The textbook is going to help the most, with weekly homework and answers in the back of the book. Tests are homework based, so not too hard.
Honestly he isnt too bad. His lectures are based off the book so you dont have to attend lecture. Hes very nice and tries his best to answer questions. His tests are from his hw. Very generous tbh
Nice professor. Tests based off hw
Hw due every week. Tries his best to help his students
Do not take him! Stopped going to lecture after week 3 they were useless and you dont anything at all ! I just had first midterm, it wasnt easy at all! I have studied both hw and textbook but really test was beyond that!!! I just want this course be over!!! Conclusion: dont take him if you have other options!!
homework is hard and makes no sense. tests are hard and make even less sense. online homework grader makes no sense. example is 0.5 being incorrect but 16/32 being correct
Prof Ye lectures straight out of the textbook and he does so in an unorganized, confusing way. Tests are pretty challenging, I recommend joining a CLAS tutor group if you want to succeed in this class.
He lectures directly out of the textbook in a way that makes no sense. Felt like I came out of lecture knowing less than when I went in so I haven't gone since Week 2 or 3. His tests are pretty difficult and the final is worth a huge portion of the grade (50-55%) even though he assigns a lot of confusing homework and makes the midterms hard.
TAs do all the work for him. I only learned from the TAs. Otherwise it is impossible to learn anything. AND I MEAN ANYTHING.
VERY test heavy (final was 50-55%), not the best lecturer because he literally reads straight from the book, but he's super accessible and tries his best when u contact him outside class. RELY ON YOUR TA. If you didnt take Calc in HS, good luck. Its rough
I took Calc AB in high school and thought I would be prepared for this class but I was definitely not. I stopped going to his lectures early on because they are useless for the midterms and final. The midterms and final are on fairly easy topics, but he chooses the most complex equations and problems that make the test so hard. Would not recommend!
Professor Ye's lectures are unorganized and he speaks with an accent. It's very hard to understand the concepts he tries to communicate without having taken clac before. You're better off learning with Khan Academy. Even though his exams were straightforward topic-wise, he picked the most confusing examples. Avoid this class with him if you can.
He might be a good poet, good mathematician, but definitely not a good professor.
Attended every lecture for this class and still felt lost when it came to tests. They weren't on overly difficult topics, but the style of questions Professor Ye chose were unlike anything we worked through on homework. Ye even refused to provide practice problems for the final when a student asked for help. And 50% for a final is ridiculous.
clas will save your life. don't bother going to lecture. tests very different from homework and book problems. i took ap calc in hs and i still found this class extremely hard.
I took Calc in High School - I knew all the concepts, I used the book problems and his assigned homework to study for the tests but still managed to get a failing score. He leaves the grading up to his Ta's, and Prof Yusen marks your question wrong even if you got it right because wrong "method". IMPOSSIBLE DO NOT TAKE. take math 3A at a community
Rick Ye manages to simultaneously waste your time and make you more confused. He does not explain problems or give study materials for tests. i would suggest not going to lecture and self studying instead. its less of a waste of time. if you have the option you should go onto the titanic before taking his class because your gpa will sink faster.
Prof Ye's lectures were very confusing and hard to follow. I only passed because I signed up for CLAS. Whatever I learned in the class I learned in CLAS or self taught from the textbook. The test questions were unlike what we had learned in homework. Only good things- notecards were allowed on tests and there was a big curve.
There is a 10% curve. If you took AP Calc, it should all be review, but if you didn't, don't expect to learn anything from him. He gave extra 10 points on the first midterm and in the final because everyone did bad. He allowed a whole sheet of paper as a cheat sheet. I'd say it is an easy class to pass given the extra points and cheat sheet.
Do not take Math 3A from Professor Ye. His Lectures are not great. By week 2, 3/4 of the class skip his lectures. Tests are poorly designed. Problems on midterm and finals are much harder than practice problems. The class performs poorly on those tests, so he'll often add ten points to everyone's tests. He also heavily curves the class.
The tests were most similar to the hardest homework problems. Practice those. Sucks bc tests comprised most of your grade in the class. The prof is a nice guy, but a bad teacher. Lectures suck. But I regret not forcing myself to go to lectures and section bc with a little more effort I think I could have gotten a better grade. Curve will save you.
His lectures are hard to follow but he has a good personality. If the entire class is struggling, he will do things to help. Otherwise, self-studying is needed for this class. He only goes through textbook examples so it's better to just read that and ask TA questions and not waste time in his lectures.
Math 3A with Professor Ye was difficult. Very unorganized, hard-to-follow lectures and gave very difficult midterms and final. I'd recommend looking over the textbook, attending section, and using external resources like Khan Academy to study if you have to take this class. HW was on Webwork, so unlimited tries.
Super hard. Never took calc and was struggling the whole time. Sign up for CLAS tutorial groups. Didn't care about helping students. HW on webwork was hard and time consuming. Breakdown of grade is also bad, very test heavy. Only redeeming quality is that he gave us bonus points on midterm and final after everyone failed. Huge curve at the end.
Go to his lectures, read the textbook, set at least one hour of study time each week if possible. I struggled because I did not study, but I began studying/trying I found the class to be easy. You won't pass the class if you want the professor to explain everything in detail; you need to set time aside if you are struggling.
Absolutely AMAZING professor. Lectures were coherent and organized and the homework and tests were SUPER straightforward. If you attend lectures, you pretty much DON'T have to study. The people that are COMPLAINING just didn't go to the lectures and took the test BLIND. His work on the Logarithmic Sobolev Inequality inspired me to major in math.
Big curves but hard exams
SUPERB teacher. Addresses were sound and coordinated and the schoolwork and tests were SUPER clear. Assuming that you go to addresses, you basically DON'T need to study. Individuals that are COMPLAINING simply didn't go to the talks and stepped through the examination BLIND. His work on the Logarithmic Sobolev Inequality propelled me to study math
Prof Ye lectures from the book so you don't need to attend lectures but it is nice to go sometimes. He cracks jokes during class and only sometimes uploads a recorded lecture depending on how the tech is working that day. At first class was very difficult but test are based off of HW and lecture examples and you get a entire page note sheet
I would never take Ye again. He is a terrible lecturer as he simply proofs theorems. His class is test heavy and, while the tests have a huge curve, they are extremely difficult. Study the homework and do every problem in the textbook if you are able to, and utilize sections and tutoring services.
His lectures are just him solving problems without explanation and aren't much help. The syllabus is a copy of the online textbooks table of contents, doesn't include office hours or anything useful. In my opinion, someone who can't even put together a syllabus has no business being employed anywhere.
The lectures are not helpful at all and super boring. If you plan on going bring your textbook or something to do problems to fill the time when he takes thirty minutes to teach one theorem.
Would never take this class again.
If you ever feel useless in life attend one of his lectures. His tests are as broken as the McDonald's ice cream machines. He will give you questions that look familiar, but very complex, and you actually don't know how to do them because they never appeared in the homework. During exams, you will be stuck there twiddling your thumbs with regret
TTTTTTTTTTTERRIBLE!!!!!!!! I do not understand what he said in class???? messy notes!!!!
He simply followed the textbook in class, proving every single process without any logical guidance or explanation as to why. The examples he provided were unchallenging, but he would spend a lot of time proving them due to his frequent calculation errors. His notes were nearly illegible and his English communication skills were severely lacking.
Run, my friend, run for your life. Super hard exams, unformatted syllabus. He delivers his lecture by writing everything (messy) in an OneNote file and starts explaining everything without looking up (that's why he ignored students' high-held hand) and post the recorded version in GS THAT'S ALL U GET, not even the OneNote file. JUST RUN, MY FRIEND.
Mechanical teaching, like performing a task without any consideration for anything else.
Very difficult to keep up. Feels like concepts would be easier if taught better. Sitting in class kind of feels like when a parent is trying to teach you math at the dining while you're on the verge of tears. Yells his words in a way that frustrates me.
He appears to harbor the belief that a challenging examination can serve as a testament to his proficiency, and furthermore, the midterm solution provided by Rick Ye deviates starkly from our own or has yet to be unearthed by myself.
cant teach or speak in proper sentences, completely awful at teaching just rambles and doodles
everyone hating on rick is just not smart. he's a good professor. If you self-study you are good. he tells you everything that's gonna be on tests, it doesn't get easier than that
I am actually appalled that this guy is a teacher. DO NOT TAKE HIM unless you are very comfortable with self teaching. His lectures are convoluted and often go through only theory, with no working through examples that shows up in the homework. The TA's for the course, however, are fantastic and will be likely your best source of teaching.
Rick Ye has no structure to the class and fails to get almost any of the course content across to his students. The exams contain only free response questions. I had to learn a lot of the material from 3Blue1Brown. The homework is manageable but doesn't relate at all to the exams. If you go to section and use online resources, you might pass.
I HATE RICK YE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! AWFUL PROFESSOR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The following comment giving a positive review solely based on they have gained good grades is unethical and try to lure others into the abyss. Objectively speaking, in any circumstance, the professor is poor and incompetent, at least based on the performance of the 4A course he taught.
Get ready for a lot of self-teaching. His lectures primarily prove theorems and offer few examples. Dont rely on lectures and focus on self-teaching. He posts lectures on GS if you need. Kimberly Brehm, OCT, ThreeBluesOneBrown, and the textbook will save you. Midterm focused on concepts. He tells you what will be on exams (structure/concepts).
final is 50% of the grade; cannot teach you have to read the textbook or ur gonna fail. test was insanely hard but if you spend all your time in the textbook and understand all the concepts you'll be fine. only covered 1/3 of the curriculum so cant even say i learned linear algebra. avoid at all costs.
Don't take.
Very clear on what is going to be covered on exams. Gave us the almost exact wording of every question on the midterm + final. Midterm avg was 90/110 but he made it out of 100. Webworks were easy & extended due dates. Records lectures & gives helpful worksheets/textbook exercises + their solutions. If u dont pass 4a with him u are not trying at all
If you teach yourself all the concepts he tests on the midterm and final you'll be fine. His lectures consist of only proofs. I eventually just stopped going to lecture all together and just relied on section and CLAS. Basically, his only job was to give us a final grade which he couldn't even do. Temporary grades Ye????
I went into this class with low hopes due to the existing ratings, and he did not disappoint. I am dumbfounded as to how this professor is allowed to teach. The lectures were wildly unorganized, we covered approximately half the total material, and any real learning must be done through self study. Midterm and final were easy though. Avoid him.
He is unfit to teach Math 4A, or any other lower div math class. Covered only half of the material, did not even mention eigenvalues/eigenvectors or diagonalization. His lectures consist of staring at the computer and proving every single concept in class.
TAs will teach each weeks concepts in 50 mins compared to the 3 hours of lecture you spend with Rick. Lectures are so pointless he's practically a meme. However, the class is not hard and he gives exact problems before the tests. You will just have to self study everything.
You can basically skip lectures and learn everything from the sections and CLAS. Webwork takes around 20 minutes each week. He post the exact test questions (without numbers) before the exam, so you can just focus on those. Test questions are fair and you also get to bring an entire sheet of notes. By far the easiest professor.
Very easy class. He literally post the exact test questions, it's like handing out free A's. 50% weight for final and 25% for the midterm sound scary, but the TAs are very generous. Lectures can be difficult to follow along, but your section TA will clear up all the confusion.
Know that his lectures are pointless and that you won't come out of them smarter. Best is to just read the textbook and self study. His tests are very straight forward as he literally tells you what will be on them. Everything else about him is very disorganized and I don't think any planning went into this class. TAs made this class much better.
His lectures were mostly proofs, but it would've been better to have more explanations since linear algebra is very conceptual. We only learned half the course material. I got through the course just fine by using other resources (youtube, CLAS, etc.). His exams weren't too bad and he told us the problem types beforehand and allowed a cheat sheet.
He is so kind and patient with students. He is also earnest and helpful with every question that you have. The tests are very straightforward. If you follow the instructions he posted about the midterm and final, you can get really great grades on them.
Skip the lectures. They were all about proofs and did not correlate with what you were learning. He's also hard to understand. The TAs were so much better at teaching. We only got through half of the linear algebra curriculum too. The final and midterm were easy though since he told us what each question on them were going to be.
Easy A
Easy homework. Fair tests. The professor just need to work on the ways he explain things.
he records lectures but its all just him doing proofs. he didn't get through half the linear algebra content so you're probably going to have to self study the course at one point in time (at least) his lectures are also really unorganized, he goes through the textbook theorems so u might as well just read the textbook
Professor Ye gives really fair tests. He even tells you exactly every question that will appear on tests word by word, and you'll see the same questions without any single change in wording on your exam papers. He goes over lots of proofs in class tho, which are kinda irrelevant, but you can just relax as he doesn't put those stuff on tests either.
By far the easiest class I've taken at UCSB. The person disliking all his good comments is salty because they took an L in such a freebie class.
This professor is awesome. He is intelligent, respectful to the students, interesting, and accessible outside of the classroom. His homework doesn't take too long to finish, and office hours and sections are very helpful. Don't be frightened away by his grading scale. His test questions are very fair and he post detailed question types before exams
40% of the class got an A or higher. The average for the midterm was 90%. His lectures aren't bad at all if you read the textbook a bit beforehand. However, he does many of the similar examples over and over again, and like to jump to another concept in the middle of a question.
Syllabus wasn't completed until halfway through the quarter. Said attendance was mandatory but never set up a method to count attendance (never set up iClicker). Never answers emails, don't even try. Lectures are mostly useless, some good notes, but definitely sign up for CLAS, go to section, and learn concepts on the homework.
Easy class, didn't cover half the material so the final and midterm didn't have much stuff. Easy A.
If you only want to learn half the topics about linear algebra, make sure to take this class with Ye. Also never show up to lectures, unless you want to fall asleep listening to his amazing voice and him randomly yelling into your ears. Make sure to go to sections because TAs actually teach you the subject unlike the professor.
Easy A. Your grade primarily consists of the midterm and final(50%). Both were very easy and gave tons of partial credit. Fitting for the amount Ye actually taught. Lectures are very disorganized and dull, primarily proofs and variables, very small amount of real examples. Thick accent. Skipped a little under half of the material needed.
Barely covered half of the material for the course, and did a poor job with the material he did cover. Other reviews have testified to his poor organization, but what I'd like to add is the extent to which he failed to teach half of the course. In math 6A right now and needing to catch up on content that should be review.
learnt nothing from his lectures, went to clas and did LOTS OF SELFSTUDY. final exam 50% but both midterm and final werent hard at all. just do all of his recommended practices and u will be fine
There is one midterm and final in this class, but I found myself feeling lost on the material at any point during the class. He is a nice professor he just does not lecture very well, as he reads straight from the textbook. Exams are not hard at all but just be prepared to teach yourself (even though the material is not that confusing).
The syllabus was just homework midterm final, no course description, no professor email, nothing. Lectures are arguably worse than reading the book on your own. Ye goes incredibly slow through class and doesn't explain any ideas or do any examples. Personally, I just take notes from the textbook instead. Avoid taking his class if you can.
Actually pretty chill and kind. As has been said he provides some good notes. He's flexible with students. I don't understand why there's so many bad reviews. Complaints about his "loudness" or otherwise are just because of his accent. Ye is one of the few prof in the dept to be highly accomplished, but yet not be overly demanding with his students
Goes off on absolutely useless tangents. No clue how he can be considered a real lecturer.
Avoid him! ! ! Terrible lectures, harsh grading. There aren't any syllabus. His notes were terrible and I had to study on my own.
Worst to ever do it.
worst teacher to EVER be in the math department at UCSB. Immediate action against this man has to be taken if this school wants to be considered legitimate. Top 30 University but with a lecturer like him?? makes absolutely zero sense.
L professor L class L rizz L everything about this dude. Class is terribly structured, and the lectures are pointless. Idk how UCSB hired this man, literally the biggest waste of a math quarter ever. I recommend taking literally anybody but him as a math teacher.
Class was not activated on Canvas until the week after we started the course. Syllabus that took so long to upload consisted of 12 sentences - no TA contact information. Final was considerably harder than midterm. Lecture has zero organization and he can be difficult to understand. Grade only consists of webwork (20%), midterm (30%) and final (50%)
Literally couldn't understand a single thing he said all quarter. Going to class or not is the same, tried to learn with youtube or the textbook but decided to withdraw and take it with a different professor next quarter. NEVER take class with him. I don't know how he is teaching here.
Professor is never going to respond to any emails or requests. He reads directly off the book, and half the class fails every exam. The syllabus is 15 lines long. Total 15 line syllabus. "A potted plant might do a better job" Never start from the back of the exam. Both midterm and finals had changes we had to make halfway through the exam.
Lectures were heavy on proofs, and the way that the math was explained was very confusing (His notes did not read top down, left to right, they were absolutely EVERYWHERE). I think that Prof Ye is a nice man, but NOT a good lecturer. Would not recommend if you want to actually learn math. You do get a cheat sheet for tests, but it didn't help me.
this class is okay if you're a self learner. not a big fan of him as a lecturer/teacher, but it's definitely passable if you put in effort. never came to class beyond the first one, but did all the homework problems and he gives you a 8.5x11 front and back cheatsheet. his notes are sloppy/all over the place lol grading is 20% hw 30% mid 50% final
stay away
DO NOT TAKE THIS MAN'S COURSE AT ALL COSTS!!!! It's super unorganized to the point where it doesn't even make a difference if you show up to class or not. The contents of the class are pretty straightforward but there's no structure to the class so you basically have to teach yourself everything...
Do not take a class with him if he is the professor. Although he seems nice, he is not a great teacher. He is super unorganized during lectures, and it can be hard to understand him at times. During this course, I have been basically teaching myself the material. My advice is just to stay away at all costs.
Very test heavy your whole grade is basically your midterm and final exam. Allows cheat sheet. You have to teach yourself the material. Very disorganized and hard to sometimes understand him. TA also not helpful. If possible do not take a math class with this man.
only like 10-15% student showed up to lecture. just self teach. It's a skill you need in real workforce ig.
you have to teach yourself but material is easy to understand if you use the textbook, his lectures are all over the place and you cant understand what hes saying. tests are also easy. midterm had 5 questions and they were pretty easy, could be done within 20 min if that.
The worst teacher I have ever had in my whole life. He had to make attendance mandatory cus nobody was showing up to class. Absolutely zero flow to his lectures. You get a sheet of paper for the midterm and final which was nice but considering I didn't learn anything, it was only fair. Do not take him!!!!!
Teacher was a joke. Can barely understand his voice, jumps from random chapters, explains stuff the longest way possible. Had to self teach & do so much extra stuff to pass the class. Had to make lectures mandatory because no one showed up and the tas dont help either.
I want to emphasize by what am I going to say…DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR CLASS BY ALL COSTS. My God not only you can barely understand what he is saying, he goes through examples in the textbook without even saying where he is at, and going through the problem he's disorganized and just mumbles throughout the process.
There was a ton of homework and you have to teach yourself all the material because he only covers a small percentage of the course work and the lectures are not helpful. We were given good review material for the midterm but not for the final, which was much harder. During the final he realized half the test didn't print and a TA had to print more
Worst class I've ever taken. professor couldn't teach, literally had 0 clue how to. assigned lots of hw, if you want to learn you to self teach the entire course. final worth over 50% of your grade. good luck to anyone who has this guy in the future.
Final was 53% of the grade. Do not take his class. You will have to go to CLAS and also teach yourself the math. Final was not like the homework. Also a lot of homework.
Professor Ye is the most disorganized professor I have ever had. He had no consistent train of thought during lectures. The syllabus wasn't posted until at least two weeks into the quarter but I guess it didn't matter because I had to self-teach the whole class anyways. Midterm was easy, final was the hardest test I have taken. Avoid him if you can
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR UNLESS YOU ABSOLUTELY HAVE TO! Lectures are useless & seem to go on for years. There is no structure & nothing is explained. He just goes up there & rambles for an hour. If you do have to take this professor sign up for clas bc you will need it. Honestly, do not know how he is a professor. good luck if you take his class
NEVER take this professor, first day of class I couldn't understand what he was saying because of his very heavy accent and his handwriting is TERRIBLE. You have to rely on yourself to do your own work with YouTube videos or something cause this aint it fr. This man's laptop shuts down every 10 min like bro what the frick. I don't understand.
I am honestly livid. I took him for 34A last quarter and I will tell you right now you will not learn a single thing in lecture. Nothing he says makes sense because he reads from the textbook but never says what we are working on. EXTREMELY disorganized notes and I teach myself the material. I got a C in 34A, just barely passing.
I can't not even explain how bad this teacher is. I can't understand him, he writes like a 2nd grader, he won't tell us how many/when our midterms are. There are no practice test. He puts in no effort to help you do well or learn. I actually like math but I have never dreaded a class more.
bruh. did not take calculus in high school and had to take 34A and 34B with him too. its so bad I cant even begin to explain. stopped showing up to class because even when I did I had no clue what he was saying or doing because he will not introduce topics, he literally just starts writing stuff. wish I would've taken this class with another prof.
peace and love literally the most delusional unorganized math teacher i've ever had. i took both ab and bc in high school and still struggled on his midterm because he picked all of the hardest possible problems and they were all trick questions. Seems like i nice man but nobody can follow a single train of thought he has yet alone read the board
After reading the reviews and taking AP calc I thought I was prepared but little did I know. Attendance is mandatory 3 days a week at 9 am but his lectures confuse you more than help you. The tests are nothing like the homework and he provides no practice tests. He needs to never teach math again. Don't take his class.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS WITH RICK YE. took it bc he was the only professor teaching, but if I were you I'd skip math for a quarter to save yourself. Attendance mandatory but lectures are not helpful, never learned something useful after attending. His handwriting is atrocious, exams way harder than reviews and not what he taught you.
This is literally the worst teacher/professor I have ever had, in any subject ever, across all my 14 years of schooling. Absolutely atrocious. Do not take his class if there are any other options available. grading was 53% final, 20% midterm, 23% HW & 4% attendance. Going to lecture doesn't help since his handwriting and accent are comically awful
Does NOT explain anything, talks to himself in lecture, and hopes you figure it out.
I have no idea what is going on, I cant read his hieroglyphics.
Professor Ye does not know how to teach at all. The midterm was nothing like homework or lecture notes. Reading the book does not help either, and the whole class percentage is basically midterm and final. Homework every week, min 15 questions and do not serve for NOTHING. i wish I had dropped before the deadline with the W.
Just lazy and nobody knows whats going on in the class not even the TA's
lectures make no sense, severe lack of good example problems that would be similar to ones on midterm/final. the Class is doable if you're good at learning math solely on your own.
The worst professor I have ever had. His lectures are a mess, writing is illegible, he struggles significantly with technology, and his tests are extremely hard and unfair. The TA's are the only reason this class is passable. Avoid him as a professor if you can.
awful. iIlegible writing. Will not answer your emails. Does not tell you when exams will be until 1 to 2 weeks prior. No syllabus more like a notes page that gets edited frequently. Does not tell you the weight of exams for your grade instead gives you a range and decides at the end. Do not take this professor.
Can barely read what he is writing, and doesn't teach in a manner that someone who has no clue what is going on could understand. Changes due dates all the time so nothing is really ever set in stone, you get only a weeks notice for the midterm, and the syllabus is never set in stone. Overall a terrible professor, don't take him.
horrible, please never take.
The professor may be good at research, but his teaching is VERY POOR. Lectures are hard to follow, and the notes are unclear. It feels like there's little coordination with the TAs. Overall, it's very difficult to learn in this class due to the way the material is presented.
run. keep running.
Rick Ye makes sure you have no idea what's going on in this class. I could not understand him or read his handwriting, not that it would've helped since his lectures are all over the place. No practice tests were provided for midterm/final. HIGHLY recommend to wait a quarter and take it with another professor. TAs very unhelpful and final is 53%...
He knows a lot about math but just really is impossible to learn from. He has the sloppiest handwriting I have ever seen from a teacher or professor. I learned everything from CLAS. With that said the tests were grade rather generously so it isn't too difficult to do well if you spend time outside of lecture learning.
zero structure in lecture or section. almost no communication with students or TAs. 20+ questions of hw each week that are nothing like the exam. no information on dates/how many midterms until 1 week before. no study materials. luckily, TAs are very nice and give a lot of partial credit, which is the only reason this class was passable.
Horrible at teaching, the tests did not reflect what he taught in class.
Horribly disorganized, bad handwriting, weird tangents, constantly corrects himself so you have to rewrite notes, and switches between going too slow and too fast. His phone went off 20 times during the final exam and he did not silence it. If you are forced to take a class with him, grading is reasonable and you do get a cheat sheet on exams.
To be honest I hated the guy until the final. Lectures primarily consisted of him waffling and you were better off reading the textbook. They were funny though. I got a D- on the midterm (which he curved to a C-). Then he gave an extremely easy final worth 50% of the course grade and I ended up with an A after the final curve. Peak cinema. 10/10
Literally so disorganized and no clear syllabus. While math is usually a strong area for me, I would sit in his lectures and not understand a single thing. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS unless you know how to learn on ur own
I rebuke this professor man!
Professor Rick Ye was horrible. He's my 13th reason, can never understand anything in lecture and his lecture notes looked like some kind or foreign alien language. PLEASE avoid this professor at all cost like the black plague!!!
Worst professor in the UC sytem.
If you cant avoid him, PLEASE calculate your final grade based off the grading scale he provides and your exam, hw, and attendance scores. He input my grade as a C- when it was meant to be a C+ and it took him 6 months to correct the mistake. If this happens to you, reach out to the math dept. advisors and chair. He is very noncommunicative.
