This guy is a jerk. A test with only 20 questions on three chapters? How in the heck can you study for that. He also grades really hard. Probably one of the worst teachers here.
absolute jerk. he grades horribly (i'm an A&B student) and his homework is often busy work. It's bull.
He is a good professor, but his tests are extremely hard, and he grades them really hard. Also, you must be there on time, he will lock the door.
Nice professor, half-way interesting class, but very hard. Absolutely impossible to study for test. No study guides for any test, not even final.
Ask a question if you don't want an answer. Too, don't come to class late... he may not let you in
i cant believe how interesting the class is. i never thought political science to obe interesting. that is why i put it off till senior year. i looked at the ratings, if you just pay attention & participate in the discussion you will do well. prof is not a jerk, i am not trying to kiss up either.
If you are not lazy and just read the chapters and the assigned readings then the tests are not bad at all. The only people that do very bad in his class are the ones that do not study or do not come to class. I got an A.
I am guessing that i have this class with the two kiss ups that have already posted comments.I understand the need to learn this material but to test on material that he is has never covered is crazy.kiss up & get your A while I work for my C. But i will not lie to anyone and say hes a good prof.
Did not like this professor, or the class. He knew what he was talking about, he just didn't get it across very well. His tests were impossible to study for and very hard. I made a C, BARELY.
This man got pleasure from my pain. His final is comprehensive and 1/3 of your class grade. Avoid this mans class if at all possible. He cannot work there if no one signs up for his class.
Simply avoid this guy. He is really not worth the time. There are several other great PS professors, such as Almeida or Smentkowski.
This guy is a very nice professor, but I would not suggest him if you are a lazy student. You must go to class, take notes, read the chapters, and then you will do fine in the class. The only reason people don't like him is because he requires that you actually put effort into the class.
2nd worst prof in my 6 semesters so far. Impossible to study for tests, wouldn't answer your questions, and treated us like children.
I am not a lazy student. I NEVER skip class, and i do the readings. I had a different veiw then this teacher and he disagreed and i got a bad grade in the class because my veiws were wrong.
Not that difficult. He only requires that students take initiative for their own education. Some outside reading. And, yes, he does lock the door if you're late.
He wasn't very helpful, and not a good professor at all; I'm on the Deans List here at SEMO so I do study. I thought of him to be very stuck on himself.Offered no extra credit either.
Althaus is a great teacher, but is very unreasonable about msc stuff. If you want a good grade, avoid him.
Great teacher, you will learn a lot, but he grades tough on essay's
He's a really nice guy! You just have to study really hard for his tests! I wouldn't recommend him for a teacher if you have problems coming to class! Attendance is necessary & you actually have to read the book! But his classes are passable! And he keeps it interesting!
I asked for help and he said he was too busy for me. That semster I made all A's except the D I made in his class. He was rude and yelled at our class all the time. He would make presentions due the next class for students that were sick even if they connected him. I had to take a test with food poisening because he doesn't give make-ups.
This guy is quite possibly the worst teacher on campus. His tests are so hard and do not cover what he talked about in class. I went everyday and studied and made my very first F in his class. I am usually a B average student. He sucks, period.
Kept class interesting with discussion; demands a lot but I respect that
Very nice. Very helpful. He makes it fun and interesting. It is true that he won't allow you to be late more than twice, but that's to keep the interruptions down. My only complaint is that he grades too tough.
He is a great prof that really cares. You can ask him questions after class and he is good about returning messeges.
Don't sign up for his class if you have to walk all the way from Scully or Rhodes -- he locks the door when he starts. His tests were the hardest I've ever had, mostly because he tests on seemingly minor information from the book (and he only ever covers about half of the test material during lecture). He's kind of pompous, and some folks don't like him, but he does know his material, and he's a bright guy. Take his classes at your own risk to your GPA.
I was not interested in politics at all before taking this class. He made class interesting and got me really excited about politics, elections, etc. His assignments are pretty easy, but the tests require a fair amount of studying.

I really like his class. He's an excellent professor and really knows his material. He is very helpful and will explain anything to you that you don't understand. He has said that he is a democrat but that does not affect his teaching. he shows little to no bias at all.
This guy know his stuff and makes complex ideas easy to understand. He looks at more than just the text. I like the fact he doesn't let late students in because when that happens it distracts me and I think it is rude. You have to read and study and go to class in order to do well. He is very organized and lays everything out there for you.
Completely inflexible.
this was my first year seminar course. the tests consisted of subject matter from the book and anything mentioned in class. make sure you know the nine university studies objectives. don't be late he locks the door, but you can get in with a note slid under the door.
Probally good for poli sci but unclear on what material to study for tests in ui100.Very enjoyable class but confusing on how to get grade.Take precautions.
****! I absolutly do not like him. I hope that he rots in hell. Never take him unless you absolutly have too. He i smean and does not give A's. He is soooo mean. Horrible person. Wants you to fail.
this man sucked!! I'm a PoliSci major and have never had a prof that was so vague and unresponsive. In lecture he will get off on tangents about agri. policy (his specialty, since he doesn't have a degree in PS) and he can offer no assistance if you need help for research projects. At all costs, DO NOT TAKE THIS TEACHER... SERIOUSLY!!!!!
I agree, he wants students to do poorly. Avoid this man at all costs. If you have to take him for your major or minor...switch majors!
Would not recommend taking this prof. Nice guy but not a good teacher. I am a Poli Sci major and almost considered switching my major after taking his class.
I usually dont have problems with my professors, but I really cant stand this guy. All he talks about was the time he lost when he ran for election, and his tests are almost impossible. If you care about your grade, dont take him
He talks about himself a lot. He ran for the Senate years ago and just can't get over the fact that he lost. He locks people out if they're late but sometimes lets them in later (unless it's a test day, then they just have to miss it). I really didn't like him and would never take a class with him again.
His tests are impossible!!! Also, he is kind of cocky and always tries to persuade poliical beliefs. Dont show up late for class!!!
Tests are detailed, but he is willing to help if you have any questions. Just come to class, pay attention and read a little, study a little and you'll do fine.
says he is willing to help but when you actually go to seek his apparent wisdom on the subject he will push you aside once he has made his point. he also loves to bring up the fact that he ran for the senate but lost and if you are a republican be prepared for some arguments
He is an awful teacher. He's way too diffcult to be a teacher at SEMO.
This guy is a great teacher. His tests aren't that impossible like some people say. As long as you study for them, you will do fine. He's a pretty funny guy and I found it easy to stay awake in his class (while I found it hard to do with some other professors). Go to his class and study for his tests and you'll do fine in the class.

if you have to take this class like most transfer students do...make sure you come to class...you have to take notes and do the assignments to do well in the class...tests are somewhat difficult...he is helpful and trys to guide you through the class....
Definitely one of the bigger jerks I've encountered. Tests were confusing, homework was unbelievably boring. He seemed like one of those teachers that likes to see people fail. I would avoid taking a class from him at all costs.
Don't be late to class. He only lets you in late twice a semester. He's not a bad teacher but I would say you need to kinda teach yourself cause everything on the test isn't covered by him in class. He's nice as long as you don't have an attitude and he sees you put forth an effort.
Long story short: If you like headaches, take this class.
Wow, you have to come to class, take notes and prepare for the tests! The HORROR! He kept things interesting in a class I didnt care about, and he was more than fair. If you are an adult attending college, take him. If you are a kid wanting someone to hold your hand thru your classes, find someone else.
really boring class. attendance is not really necessary, due to the fact that we've taken only 2 tests. tests are really hard to study for. not because the information is hard, but because he picks off the wall questions at times. class is spent discussing nothing relevant to the class. easy, but boring.
DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS IF YOU ARE THE TYPE OF PERSON WHO NEEDS TO KNOW THERE GRADE AT EVERY SINGLE MOMENT. He never hands back anything quickly. It takes him at least a month to hand back some things and even longer on others.
I wouldn't take this class again. He wasn't a terrible teacher, but his tests were ridiculous & he didn't keep up with work at all. He knew his topic well but times didn't clarify what was important for the class. He didn't necessarily leave time for questions. If you didn't cover everything he wanted in class you just didn't know it for the test.
Bad teacher, bad class, bad learning environment. this guy is consumed with himself and does not help students. he locks the door to his classroom when the bell rings. most of what he says is bull.
This was a good class. His lectures are not bad. You HAVE TO READ the assignments to pass the quizs. Quiz about once a week. You have to read an extra book for the tests, but only a small portion and it is only for the essay part. He DOESN'T POST GRADES ONLINE. The was the one realy problem I had with him. Overall- GREAT CLASS!!!
This teacher was horrible. I got a good grade but went threw the entire semester not knowing what my grade was. He rambles on in class talking about nothing and he is really full of himself.
Complete Jerk. Does not tell you what your grade is. Tests are rediculously hard. I only missed one class period and studied my butt off for each test and still did not do well on them. Quizes are pointless. Should not be teching a freshman level course. Do yourself a favor and take Mitch Gerber.
Good Teacher. You have to study and read chapter. He doesnt give out A's but you can earn them.
Absolutely Horrible! Do not take this guy! He makes it seem like he really cares about his student, and he may, but he can absolutely not teach. Stay Away! Had a 3.8 GPA and now I don't even know if I will pass!
He is a complete tool. Why is he still teaching? No one liked him.
Nice man over all but his tests are impossible. His discussions don't teach you anything, and its all book readings. There was only 3 chapters in the book we didn't read. I'd advise you, if you have him...switch.
I was really nervous about political science before, now I like it. He's an awesome person with a good sense of humor. Come to class, take notes, read the chapters once, study notes and main concepts in the book and you will be golden for the test. DON'T let these harsh comments scare you.
He can't teach and his tests have nothing to do with what he says in class. Also, if you are late to class then you have to slip a note under the door. He is full of himself. SEMO should fire him.
You have to attend class.
You have to slip a note under the door to get into class if you are late. I'm not making this up.
While this professor does have clear directions on what he wants from you, he expects even more. Answering his questions is not enough, which is definitely frustrating. He grades impossible, no matter how much information you answer with, he rarely gives a 10 out of 10 on anything. Put simply, you will pass, but do not expect an A.
He's a nice guy. If you just attend class (this is the key to class!, take notes and READ the chapters you should have no problem getting an A. There are two very simple and short writing assignments. Test are multiple choice.
I tried to ignore the things people had said, but its impossible he is the worst teacher I have had in a very long time! Once on a quiz day he started 2 mins earlier than usual - I even checked my phone and I was early yet he didn't let me in for the quiz and told me "don't worry the lowest 3 get dropped" Well I had studied all night!
treated students like children
Quizzes and tests are easy as long as you actually read the chapters and come to class, but dont' be late.
This guy is a great prof. He really has an interest in this field and he wants people to know it just as well as he does.
He's a really great professor who loves everything he teaches. The course work is easy and as long as you make sure to include ALL the information asked, you'll get a good grade. There are only about 215pts for the semester so you have to be careful not to mess up on to many assignments or you'll never make an A. He gives no extra credit EVER.
Took this online class to fulfill 1 credit hr of MO government as a transfer student. Dr. Althaus is extremely knowlegable of politics which was great. However, this class was extremely difficult for its level. I am an A student & put A effort into this class and barely passed. Lots of essay type homework w/ tough (at his mercy)grading system.
Honestly, he really is a nice guy. The tests were multiple choice but all concept. If you didn't understand what he was talking about in class, don't expect to do well on the tests. Ask questions.
Althaus has a difficult class. He is strict but fair.
Never met another professor so enthusiastic about what they teach. Read the material and be on time. No cell phones. Ask questions! He loves that. If you're super Conservative, you won't like him. He's listens to all students' opinions.
He is a very nice guy although he can be a bit different at times. I feel like he is big on teaching students responsibility and if you have a problem with that your'e going to have a rough time in his class. Pay very close attention to what he teaches in class and his opinions!
He is completely full of himself , has a very rude attitude and thinks that his class is the most important class. He is a joke. His class is a pain. Avoid him if you can.
I didn't like Dr. Althaus at first, but I warmed up to him over the course of the semester and ended up liking him a lot. He does put a lot of focus on his own class with little consideration for your other classes, but it isn't all that hard to manage. The reading was the toughest part since he assigned at least one chapter a week.
He is very enthusiastic about what he teaches and is very knowledgeable, but his tests are near impossible to achieve an A on. His online quizzes were doable. His lectures did not have much to do with what was on the tests. Attendance is absolutely necessary and he is very strict about tardiness.
He's horrible.
Just don't take it unless you are really into politics.
WORST PROFESSOR I'VE EVER HAD! I strongly recommend taking someone else. He was not helpful at all. His notes made zero sense more than half the time. I dreaded going to this class. So do yourself a favor and take someone else.
Althaus is the most ambiguous grader that I have ever encountered. Exams are extremely difficult and entirely essay (get those Blue Books!). When you ask him a question, he replies with "I don't know," including when you question his grading on an exam. Definitely do not take his class.
I know nothing about politics and government so I didn't do that well in this class. I showed up everyday and studied for tests still didn't do too hot. Nice guy, but tests are difficult and can be tricky! Study days in advance!!! The only grades are test and quizzes. You get one worksheet the whole semester.
If you ask for help he will help you, but you will definitely have to earn your grade. He is very strict about Cell Phones, as in don't even think about having it out during class. I would not recommend taking this class.
I wouldn't recommend taking his class. His lectures have no structureand don't relate to the chapter, only his random thoughts on the topic. His tests are conceptual and meant to trick you. His quizzes are over 40 page chapters. Only test and quizzes are mentioned in the syllabus not written assignments. Doesn't even calculate your grades. You do.
I had to drop his class it was so bad. His rules and policies are out dated. If you're late, don't bother coming because he will embarrass you in front of everyone and make you sit in the front. His lectures are confusing and doesn't discuss chapter/test material very heavily. His test are meant to trick you. Avoid at all costs if you want to pass.
Does this really dumb thing where he wants people to read his mind when he asks a question to the class, calls on random people who have no clue what he is talking about, and treats college students like middle schoolers. DO NOT take this class with him.
Never take this man if you absolutely dont have to. Even if you have to, I would still wait for next semester to take this class. Anything that he says in class barley relates to the tests. He doesn't tell you when the few assignments that you have to do, are going to be due.
Pretty good for the most part. He's strict but also fair. The quizzes are easy points but you have to do the reading to understand them. He encourages you to ask any questions you have and he will answer them. He gives you a schedule and a grade record so you always know what to expect. Overall, not a bad choice
Althaus is a great professor, but you MUST earn your grade. This class isn't a cake walk, as his tests require you to pay attention to lectures, read the homework, etc. Although it was hard, I'm glad I took this class with Althaus because it taught me academic skills, personal responsibilities, and study habits that are required in college.
The tests were very difficult. They were 25 questions each and the questions were obscure. Even rereading all the chapters in the book don't help. There is an online quiz every chapter, and they are easy and most of them are online.
I really enjoyed his class. All you have to do is show up and then read the textbook. Quizzes every week over a chapter, 4 Test, and a final. I really like this style of teaching. He made the subject very easy to understand and was willing to help you out if you are struggling
I graduated in May 2017 and I had Dr. Althaus as my professor my last two semesters. When I first started the class, I was scared and ready to give up, but when I finished, I felt I could accomplish anything. Yes, he is the most difficult professor at SEMO; however, nothing good comes easy. He helped me get past my limit and I am thankful he did!
The code of the class I took was not an option. It is PS492/693: Nonprofit Management. Dr. Althaus often gets a bad reputation at SEMO, but he is a great professor. He is super engaging in his lecture and always understanding of questions. He is quick to get back to students emails. In my class we had no tests, just chapter reviews and papers.
worst teacher, so hard. wouldn't even but in grades online, made us calculate it on a paper. hardly talked about anything in the chapter then the test was only 20 questions so if you got one wrong your screwed. this is the only class ive ever had to drop because it was so hard and he was not considerate
