First day of class assigned at least 2-3 hours of work. Nuff said, avoid her!
i really enjoyed this professor even though a lot of students fail her course. she teaches you how to write and that is the one thing students have trouble in. i do not regret taking her course.

She is the worst teacher I ever had in college. I have maintained a 3.9 GPA. I have never gotten anything less than an A in all my college years EXCEPT FOR COHN - She gave me a C! I am in 6 honor societies and an ENG tutor and she gave me a C. Go figure!&

second to worst teacher ever. See Prof. Daniels Had her for only a few classes and dropped her. She made you outline and write footnotes for every little thing you read, entirely to annoying and took way too much time. She seemed like a horrible and hard teacher. Save yourself now.
Very hard
She is not a good teacher. I don't like her. The only thing she does is saying "take notes, take note, and TAKE NOTES!!!" She doesn't explain much but gives a lot of homework and never goes over our mistakes. Oh yeah, she also sais "go and figure out why you got it wrong..."She is a horrible teacher

If you're looking for an easy grade and not willing to put in any effort duh you're not going to like her. But if you're looking to seriously improve your writing and do work and "take notes" then she's an awesome prof. :P
Cohn is a horrible teacher!! she told me that i shouldnt even show up for class because i was a waste of her time.. Cohn also does not work with students at all! she was the waste of my time. its funny cuz all the girls that were in my RDG011 class r in my class this semester.
folks her reading techniques 2 answer the departmental test for reading-011 was really awesome but the thing is she has over confident on herself and never help the students to overcome their mistakes & simply says figure it outurself & also never gives a 2nd chance for any assignments 0&she wanna on her assigned date always wanna us 2 take notes.
I had her my first semester (I have since graduated), she made me want to quit college just because she did not like my technique or style. I got a "C" for the semester and was glad with that. I never wanted to take another class with her again

I had her last semester back to back for almost 4 hours! She was not understanding at all about anything. She did not "care for" my writing style and simply failed every paper I wrote because they either didnt match the way hers started or she just didnt like it. I even had my mother(a teacher of 34 years) write a paper,and to no surprise - F.

Very hard teacher. Homework is ridiculously long. Took me 4 hours to complete her homework. It was so stressful. Mostly all my papers weren't good enough. I ended up dropping her class. I wouldn't recommend taking her at all!! Unless you want to be an excellent writer.
She's a very nice person, but very hard as a teacher. Don't take her if you're not ready to work.
I felt that everything she taught was well worth it. She brings alot of enthusiasm, but don't underestimate her...she's a difficult grader. Don't expect a good grade without giving effort. Ended up with an A, but like I said, be prepared to work for it.

I took Prof Cohn's class over a year ago, but I don't think anyone is giving her enough credit. She is an amazing teacher, as long as you are willing to work with her and for her. He class isn't easy but it's very informative and I learned more from her in 4 months than anyone else in four years.
I have always been a straight 'A' student in English Professor Cohn was very fond of my writing. I was getting A's on what I wrote but her work load is rediculous and I dropped her class due to her antics in class and locking the door at the stroke of 8 in the morning so that any student even a minute late could not get in.
Would not reccomend her. She can be rude! Not the most helpful either.
One of the best teachers Middlesex has to offer. Always willing to help. Meet her expectations and you shall do well. Simply a phenomal teacher
Excellent teacher. She expects alot out of her students, but what do you expect? This IS college. I dont understand why there are so many negative comments. Always willing to help in any means possible . Wants you to succeed! If you're interested in becoming a better writer take her class..If you wanna goof off and not try, then dont waste her time
Great Teacher. However, if your in her class, expect to work hard. She is very persistent with the work her students do. Its gotta be done exactly how she wants. What she teaches helps alot. Just remember to study and complete assignments, its not that easy of a class, and not as normal as other classes
Its only been 2 wks into the semester, n Cohn is definitely horrible already. She thinks she's right all the time, talks down to the class, and even enforces rules she has no right making. She doesn't even make it clear what her expectations are. Don't take this lady, she will ruin you.

Though I did pass her class, this professor is extremely tough. The class started out rather full, but towards the end, there were about 7 students left (all of which didn't like her). The only thing about her class that I liked were all the dittos she gave us that helped us to write our essays. However, I DON'T recommend her.

Working hard, attending the class in regular basis, taking notes(VERY IMPORTANT); then you will pass the class. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
Shes a very hard teacher. Every little thing ha to be exactly how she wants. Shes isnt the nicest person in the way she will call you out and embarass you infront of the class. LOTS of stupis tedies work, which youll still get a D+ on. not worth it at all.
If you are an a & b student then you will haveto settle for a c or d in her class would highly not recommend taking her if possible. Is not a pleasent person at all!

I took her my first semester at middlesex. I received great grades in enlgish all through high school and even my writing got high praise from my political science professor that EXACT SAME SEMESTER! She failed me.To make a long story short I would eventually transfer to Rutgers University as an ENGLISH major. I am the next SHAKESPEARE! I made it!

There is no one who can teach you how to write a better paper...if you want to learn. The formula is basic and easy to follow. Of course she expects the use of good English and sentence structure..something, unfortunately, that our public school system is failing to teach us! Open your minds and let her teach you.
I took her a couple of years ago and dropped the class. She was horrible, rude, inconsiderate, and not a well- rounded teacher. She was not clear on what she wanted. The class size decreased as the days passed by. I am now a teacher and could not see how someone like that is still in the profession.

She will work with you. Most of the people complaining about her probably did not make that much of an attempt. Do the work, show up to class, pay attention and talk to her about any problems you are having. This is college, not high school.

Great Teacher. If you do exactly what she says you will do fine in her class. I thought that it was going to be a hard class but it really was not. I would recommend anyone to take her. When I came on rate my professor I thought Oh My I am going to fail but she really is not that bad.
If the prospect of academic bulimia appeals to you, inconsiderately repeating pages of lecture verbatim, take this course. You won't think or contribute, you'll just tear your hair out trying to finish epic essays that not even the authors of the text books could finish in the time given. This lady is a terror, avoid her AT ALL COSTS.

She is not for the lazy. She will force you to attempt to better yourself as a writer. Progress the beginning of the class to the end of the class is most important. She explains everything that you need to do to strengthen your writing and the only person you have to blame for doing poor in the class is yourself. You will use all of your books.

She is very organized with the lessons and curriculum. If you want to LEARN english DEEPLY, you should take her. She's not for the lazy, she EXPECTS students to work n progress!! But she gives us massive homeworks, don't procrastinate! she teaches n explains stuff very well, but you really need to work HARD to get good grades, or else you'll FAIL!

She's a great professor. She is sarcastic & assigns a good amount of work. The class isn't hard, you just need to listen, take note & apply it to your work. Effort in your work is required for this class- so no BS. This class WILL be very helpful for when you need to write papers for future classes as well. The toughness is only for your benefit.

You will learn a lot from Professor Cohn. She will teach you writing techniques to keep your readers interested. Take the journal entries seriously. Don't be absent often. Buy (and use!) the books. She expects you to do your work, and will teach you the proper way to get things done. If you want to slack off, this class isn't for you.

I was so excited to take this class as I am a good writer.She calls our class stupid. She is so unclear and vague that I get physically sick going to class. I used to love writing. Now I hate anything to do with it and only pray my next professor will be a nice person. Cohn has ruined me.
I agree with all I see. I am so lost. I loved English and now I'm just about terrified with this school and what I'll see next semester. I just got back a paper with an F, and I spent days writing it. I got the second highest grade in my hs's SAT. This paper was excellent. She randomly wrote, "I don't know where you are going with this."

Someone said to take her to test out of remedial? I hoped to have a GOOD professor, who would help me learn to read and write better. She was the worst instructor I've had from grade K! She is mean, called us (remedial) "stupid", gave NO feedback and random grades with no comments. When asked how can we get higher, she said, "Figure it out." RUN!

Great Teacher ! She gives you homework every day,but never collects it,but if you don't do it you wont learn anything. Honestly, she's extremely rude and doesn't help you when you need it. She's judgemental and doesn't care. when you first enter the class, you think she's a good teacher and fun but as the semester goes on she gets worse and worse. Yet, it is not a hard class to pass (unless you need more assistance).
Seems like a cool teacher at first but everything changes after the first 2 weeks. She is extremely rude and VERY sarcastic. She wants everything done her way and if not she complains. Hates cells phones!!!! If she doesn't like you then you will know by how she acts towards you. She has a no bathroom rule or leaving her class for anything rule.

At the beginning, her class was hard and i kinda dislike her and planning in dropping the class. However, i realized that her class is easy as long you pay attention and do your work. I must admit, she is one funny professor and her sarcasm is the best.
Prof. Cohn is one of the most influential, helpful, and personable professors. She is big on putting in effort and thoroughness: as long as you put time into your work and try you will do well. Always willing to meet to address what needs to be worked on, provides great tools, is understanding, and does not require a textbook, so it saves money.
I do not like this professor to much, although she's sarcastic and sometimes funny she does come across rude a lot. Don't accept to be able to leave class, go to the bathroom or throughout something in the garbage, she will tell you to sit back down and to me I didn't personally respect feeling like I was back in high school in a class I paid for.
I was an awful writer before taking this class. English was never my thing really. But I never enjoyed a class more then this. A lot of poem analyzing, and a couple of papers. She will help you if you ask dont be scared. Show up, do an amazing job on your journals and go to class!! She makes me wanna take eng 122 again and I hated it last semeste
She may seem scary but if you do EVERYTHING the way she wants, you will be able to pass with a good grade. Her sarcasm is funny and make sure you come on time unless you want to hear a huge sigh. It may seem you are at high school again, but she is helpful and wants you to do well in real life skills and in "fake life" as she calls it. PARTICIPATE!

Kinda sad I don't need to take anymore English or writing classes. I've taken her for 2 of them & I love her. She is very sarcastic but I found it funny. She gives great feedback on papers & tells exactly what you should fix. She makes what she wants very clear so if you follow that, you'll have no problem getting an A!also doesn't require textbook
Even though she is the toughest grader I have ever had. I really enjoy her class. Sometimes, I wish she would cut us a break, but I love her way of teaching. She gives you all the tools you need to write good papers, you just have to BE ON TIME and ACTUALLY SHOW UP in order to receive the lesson. Overall, she is a hard ass, but it is worth it.

If you know you are not going to write your ROUGH drafts and FINAL drafts a day or two before it's DUE; do yourself a FAVOR AND DON'T take her. YOU WILL FAIL . She Gives out this 4 page document that ACTUALLY REALLY helps you construct a well written essay . She calls it "The bible"...

I was a B student in English all of my life... and I just failed my first essay. The expectations are nearly impossible to reach. Needless to say, I dropped this class.
Professor Cohn does not joke around. Take notes whenever she speaks. She gives great advice, and unless you reach out to her for help she won't help. Take notes, everything you need is in them. She is not mean at all. Her sarcasm will make your day, always. There is a lot of work to do, but suck it up. And don't miss class! Every class is important
Prof. Cohn wasn't so bad, I just wouldn't take her again because her sarcasm sucks. She yells at you for coming late it could literally be for a minute and still. Her attitude is horrible. She grades pretty rough, but you do learn, if you try you'll pass, so just do your work.
AWFUL teacher don't waste your time
A miserable professor. She grades using a checklist style cover page but fails to explain why she's marked you down for things. She almost always refused to give any feedback regarding assignments and sometimes even to questions raised in class. A very "my way or the highway" kind of professor as well. 0/10 Professor. You don't need the stress.
If you're seriously determined to improve your writing even if you fail, go for it. Always be on time. NOT EVEN 5 MIN LATE. NO JOKE. I sometimes liked her. She is very intelligent. Lots of handouts. Bring them daily. Miss one class and you're LOST. If you care about NOT FAILING, DONT TAKE HER EVEN IF SHE'S THE ONLY LEFT. Back to back stressing h.w

She is unfair grader, you cannot ask her anything, her methodology of teaching is horrible, she only gives papers and says just do just like on papers says , but does not clearly explain. haven't taken worst class than that.
Really wasn't as bad as everybody here is saying.. Sometimes it does feel like she just wants to hear herself talk and she does place blame when it isnt about blame, but she does care. It won't seem like it, but she does. You're going to be a better writer and overall she's fair, but tough.
If you did good in your English 121 class don't expect to do good here. No matter how hard I tried I couldn't get at least a B in one of the assignments. She gives out alot of journals with 4-5 questions. But don't write a few sentences or you're going to fail that journal assignment. I be writing a whole paragraph as a answer and still can't pass.
If you have to take her then good luck. Make sure you're on time!! Or she will wild out on you! Make sure you have all the handouts organized and everything you need for that day!! I took Professor Cohn as a support class for reading. I was more stressed with the work and my grade in her my SUPPORT CLASS then my actual English class. She would be great for English majors but other then that if you're just trying to get the credits done do not take her. Shes suuuper tough and very hard headed. Outside of the class great lady.

The reason why I ma saying this is because, I was late to class by one minute, and she made me wait the entire class to hand in my assignment and the grade I recieved for that was from a C to a D just because I was late. She doesnt help you if you miss a class. She doesnt take mails.
I took her for both English 121 & 122, yes she is a tough grader and she likes things done her way soo just follow directions. You have to show up on time to her class or she gets mad. If your an English major and love it take her but if are talking her class just for credits you i'd recommend a different professor, she's tough as nails and expects A LOT out of you. made me hate english even more. I couldnt believe how rude she was and how she wanted everything her way, and if it wasnt her way you fail or get a D. Getting a B on an assignment was almost impossible because shes hard headed to realize students have other classes. dont stress urself out by taking this course. im sorry i did.

Terrible professor. Doesn't make it a safe environment to ask questions. Makes you feel stupid for asking questions on things she didn't explain well. Never in a good mood. Professors like her are one of the number one reasons people hate school.
Reviews are misleading & written by people who don't want to learn, just pass. This professor is tough, but she truly cares about teaching her students skills and is funny & lively! She can be a bit short but I get her frustration, people don't care enough to put in effort. Tough grader and a lot of work but if you stay on top of it it's doable.
Lots of work every single class. Be prepared to spend 6+ hours weekly on work. Have to take notes. Extremely hard grading
Worst professor! If it's not done her way, you get an F. If you take her class, do not be even 2 minutes late because she will give you the death stare and call you out in front of everyone. SHE DOESNT POST GRADES ON CANVAS, she says to figure out your grade yourself. I want to cry every time I have to sit in her class. Waste of money, honestly.
Prof. Cohn is amazing and Im so sad to see these reviews. If you want to breeze by your classes yes avoid this course but if ur a good student who really likes learning please take her. She gives back the attitude she gets. If you show up and do the work shes willing to help you!!! Take her to learn a LOT, dont take her for an easy pass. SMH.
The worst professor I had so far! she makes the work extra complicated. When you ask her for help she makes you feel dumb and doesn't explain it to better help you understand. She is the true definition of why college students are so stressed. HORRIBLEEEEEEEE!!!!!! She will definitely make you hate school.
Professor Cohn is a caring professor and genuinely wants to help her students become better writers and readers but... she needs to understand that this class is a requirement and not be so demanding when some students simply want to get the credits and move on. She grades essays very harshly. She expects you to follow all of her outlines PRECISELY
She doesn't explain absolutely anything. She basically expects us to know everything magically on our own. If you email her or ask her a question in class she calls you out. Thinks this is the only class we have because of all of the files she wants us to print out. Every class is basically just how we suck. Makes rude comments almost every class.

She is not a bad person, but when it comes to giving feedback not the best. Will ask you to look back at you notes but only gives you 5 sentences to read. When you ask questions she will mostly likely get sassy, sometimes her answers will help and some not. Will use first class as guineas-pigs. You will not know what you're doing wrong. Good luck!
Don't take her if you don't have to. She seems nice outside of class, but in class, she is very rude. She was always complaining about us during every class and she is not very helpful. She is a very tough grader and you will most likely never get above a B.
Please dont make the same mistake I made and take this class with professor Cohn. This professor is rude and yells at you even if you ask for help. She also is the toughest grader I have ever had and takes major points off assignments even for the smallest errors.
I spend a lot time to do essay and reading the material, this Professor gave a lot assignment and you can't rush it. you gonna get D if you submit assignment before class start. And What she wants is a college-level composition, if you just need credit don't choose! There is no excuse to turn off your camera. put your camera on for every time
Shes hard on individuals, but not the beneficial hard, she doesnt help you progress with her help, everything is all on your own. You cannot communicate about feedback and understand where youve gone wrong. Shes too hard for a regular English requirement class.
Professor Cohn is not a well-rounded teacher. Putting 4+ hours and writing several pages on her assignments and still not getting higher than a D. Calls people out during class for an email or asking a question Its a self-inflated ego boost to her I guess. She has a very peevish-bashful attitude and I wouldn't recommend her class.
Professor Cohn is a great professor but you will need to really WORK for your grade. She challenges you to think critically and she expects you to LEARN from your mistakes. Probably one of the most difficult A's I've had to earn. I learned more about writing and critical thinking/reading in this one class than throughout my entire education.

The most condescending professor I ever had. Threatened student to make turn in times earlier because one student missed one assignment. Does not teach. Gives you a list of things to read and makes a fool of you in front of class if you ask questions about asignments . Thinks she's working at Princeton, when she works at community college.
By far worst instructor I've ever had. Since day one I realized she wasn't a good professor worst than a high school teacher. Its nearly impossible to get above a C+ on any assignments or essay even if you read the short stories or spend hours on it. She is always in a bad mood and her overall goal is make you feel stupid even through emails.
I wouldn't recommend taking her class if youre taking this as a pre-req like I did, switch to a more lax prof. She's very specific grading EVERYTHING, including minor journal assignments. Very nice outside of class, but unless you're ready to sweat for a passing grade, don't take her class. I had to drop it eventually.
Has got to be by far the worst teacher I have ever had, please to anyone that will be taking her soon SKIP HER NOW! She will lecture you and everyone about the homework being "incomplete" when you'll write in debt about every question, she grades things to a extreme when it's something so simple. I would write more but it would be like a essay.
You do exactly what she asks for and you will still get a bad grade. You have to be a literal author in order to do good in her class.

Omg! You dont want to take this professor. This is the most unrealistic class Ive ever taken. Grades simple assignments so strictly as if your life depended on it. Save yourself. Absolutely worst professor ever. I had to drop her class.
She always yells at her students and belittles them ruthlessly and inexplicably. One student in my class asked a question and she said "I'm going to punch you", I know it was a joke but no educator should be saying that. It's unprofessional, it's like she gets off on making her students feel good to put herself on some sort of pedestal.
she never helps you at all and if you have a question all she would say is "look at your notes i am not repeating it again" she never helps you when writing a paper and her hw instructions are not clear at all. she gets really annoyed whenever you ask a question. i would not recommend her at all or her class.

in class, you don't do anything besides notes, then you write papers through the lengthy process she gives you. not terrible, but personally wouldn't take it again bc of the grading.
She will give you steps for writing an essay successfully, and as long as you give yourself enough time to do them, you will do well in her class. She is difficult, but I cannot deny that she was helpful. Just be aware that you won't have a grade until the end of the semester. She will look at EVERYTHING and give a final grade.
I am a freshman at this college and I was really good at writing until I took this class. For the first three weeks of class I was on Zoom. The first time she gave me a writing assignment, I was filled with confidence. I had written what she had asked me. When she posted the instructions, she had filled the comments with rude remarks.
Demands spaced-out time for assignments, some won't be due for 4 days some will be due in 2 so how practical it is varied. Course graded on 3 or 4 papers for the semester as well as a couple of journal entries. Teaches methodically how to write the way she expects, if you can grasp the idea of why she wants it written that way, class isn't hard.

I took her 101 in 2021, I was 25 at the time and it was my first semester ever in college. I've worked for a living in the past. You people here have a misconception of how college work. It's not supposed to be easy and you are here to learn. You will learn A LOT about writing by doing hard work with her. Without her, I WOULD fail comp II.
Whatever you do don't take this class. I took it my freshman year and almost failed because of how tough a grader the professor is. If you think you know anything about writing be prepared to throw it out the door because the professor spends 90% of the class either making fun a students in another class or zooming through the notes. 100% dont take
By far the worse professor I've taken at Middlesex. Does not give feedback besides "Reread directions" and graded everything I summitted a C. I had no problem passing with an A for ENG-122 with Acuna, a far better professor. People like Cohn gives Middlesex a bad rep. Said nobody in my class got an A for an essay, showing how hard she grades.
Professor Cohn has high expectations, but if you follow her detailed process, you can succeed. The workload is heavy, but using resources like unstuckstudy for study prep can make a difference. Overall, a challenging yet rewarding class.
