Very intelligent, but quite tough.
Great experience. Exams were fair. Brings lots of interesting, real life information to the class. I still talk about information I learned in that class a year later. Informed me on a lot of topics relevant to today's society.

Material not too bad but this class is a lot of work. And holy, he puts tricks into the exams so watch out and know your stuff. Also, he can be rude at times. VERY strict with exam/project procedures.
Sooo easy and soooo interesting.
Man, what can I say? This guy is one cold-blooded reptilian ****, but boy, can he sure ever get a point across and do so in the most efficient manner. You can tell that he has been teaching this for awhile and he know's his stuff. If I had this guy for all my classes I would get straight A's!!
Very helpful - helped me for several hours on one occasion, just before an exam. Interesting/funny too.
The course is easy and interesting. The exams are 180 true and false questions with a correction factor, so if you study you can do well. He tries to make the course as interesting as possible with lots of multimedia and has a good sense of humour.
That southern drawn really throws you off guard, he's surprisingly brilliant! Course was really tough but fair. Exams: Expect to get questions you've never seen before. You have to figure stuff out all over again. Notes are very good, lectures a bit boring but he explains difficult concepts well.
All this course is is memorization, I didn't have the time to memorize the whole book, but if you do you can do well in this course.
This man is heartless and downright mean. He has no sense of compassion and I wish I'd never signed up for this course. BIG BIG BIG MISTAKE.
This prof is usually available for help if you really need it...although he seems to just assume that everyone is a math genius. He'll teach you how to do a formula, but he tends to put a twist on it and expect you to figure out how to solve it.
I really wish he'd use powerpoint slides to present his pictures and graphs... he basically surfs the internet on the projection screen to find media, so it eats up time but makes the lecture boring and causes him to lose momentum. Definitely takes memorization to do well in this course!!! Make up your own T/F questions from the notes, it helps!
Hinson is ridiculous. There is nothing left to say, just ridiculous.
Love this class! Hinson is funny and its an easy easy class. Strictly memorization and he publishes his lecture notes at the beginning of the year so you pretty much can't go wrong.
Good prof. I liked him, anyway.
Terrible teacher who does not seem to care how his students do
terribly rude, unhelpful, arrogant, avoid him at all costs.
The research project was easy, but I think that was because I had a good TA. I had a lot of trouble understanding Hinson because of his accent. Some of his notes also don't seem to make a lot of sense. When you're learning the math part, don't read the explanation before it, just focus on the example. You'll do so much better!!!!
He is so hard to understand. His texas accent is very thick. He goes verbatim from the textbook that he has written, however, he speaks and goes through the text way too fast. Several people feel frustrated in his lectures. He has very strict policies about handing in assignments on time.

He knows his subject and very enthusiastic about it. His exams are hard, if you are no good in math then forget about it. Very strict. Like to put twisted questions on tests. His M.C. questions consist of 8 choices, be prepared to study HARD!
He knows his subject and very enthusiastic about it. His exams are hard, if you are no good in math then forget about it. Very strict. Like to put twisted questions on tests. His M.C. questions consist of 8 choices, be prepared to study HARD!
Awesome Prof... actually enjoyed sitting in class. He is supper strict on Arriving on time to Exams and all his exams are True and False with a correction factor. Make up true and false cards to study with and u will do fine!
great prof, great class
Dr Hinson needs to learn how to interact with the class more. He needs to speak slowly and answer questions in more detail. He also needs to make sure that each Lab section is consistent and that each has the same marking scheme. He needs to pull up his socks if he wants to keep his job.
his north carolina accent is HORRIBLE not to mention annoying.. doesnt lecture well, just reads straight out of this stupid notebook he makes you buy. his T/F are ridiculously stupid and he changes the smallest things to make them false. It's not as easy as one might think...
Just read the book carefully, and follow him in class and this course is really easy. Tests arent too hard, but involve a lot of preparation. If you are willing to put time into his course, you'll do well
Good Teacher!
For the psychology portion of the class, he's good; very knowledgeable and presents interesting real-life cases. BUT for the stats portion, AWFUL. The questions worked through in class have NO reflection on the exam questions. Exams were very difficult. If you're good at stats, you'll be okay. If not, I'd recommend getting a tutor from the start.
His lectures are quite boring and he has a tendency to go off topic pretty often.
As long as you go to class, His exam is really easy! All the exam questions come from his lecture, not much thinking involved! And he doesn't require you to buy textbook, save a lot of money..
Drugs and behaviour was a really interesting class!! His MC is really easy! and he goes through the textbook material during class so you don't have to do additional readings!
Easy exams
I took a class with him before and really enjoyed it. Unfortunately, this course is very different. I'm not a math student, but this class is required for me, and it is very math-focused, to the point where the research part is ignored. The text notes are dense and needlessly complicated. It's like everything is purposely made harder.
He's awesome. Definitely my favorite prof that I've had in my four years at Western.
Great there to help
Prof clearly knows his subject well and is VERY willing to help those who ask. If you just go to class and pay attention you will do well. He will spend as much time as you need clarifying and seems to truly care about his student's progress.
great
he's really clear, helpful and interesting. Research methods and stats are NOT the best topics but he really makes it as good as it can be. I find his lectures are engaging and I love his lecture book - go to class, study the lecture book and you'll do fine. His stats questions are a bit tricky. not much agreement between labs!
Ok Prof. Can be helpful but kind of rude. He basically just reads out the course notes during lectures.
good class if you go to lecture and study--probably pretty hard if you dont
good class
If you go to class and work hard you will do well in this class. He remembers his students that attend class frequently and is more than willing to provide extra assistance if needed. He knows his subject very well, and made it as interesting as it could possibly. Also gives opportunity for extra marks.
Pretty good teacher who explains things in a simple/effective way. No textbook in this course, so you get to save about 170.00. His tests are fair but a good portion of the multiple choice questions on his exams are poorly written. Overall a decent class.
Solid teacher. Explains things fairly well. His exams are slightly flawed though (for this class) in my opinion. For example, if you happen to not know one question or do poorly on it, you basically lose 20-30 marks which is ridiculous in my opinion. Other than that, good teacher.
Good course, great lectures, test can be hard unless you study
Really difficult even if you study unless you're the type of student who's experienced university solely on a memorization basis. He is not very helpful and essentially reads out of the "textbook" which are his lecture notes packaged for a profit. The course is really not very interesting at all; just repetitive statistics.
To say that he teaches this course would be an exaggeration. He merely reads his lecture notes, which you have to buy for $40 from some place that's not the bookstore when he could easily post them online for free. If you don't buy them, you have to struggle to keep up in class. Boring material, but seems interesting at a glance. Not recommended.
Hinson is a really nice prof! He tries to make his lectures interesting and his exams are really easy. The people that complain about his exams being hard clearly did not study the text notes very well. Pretty much every question is taken straight from the notes, and you don't need to know super specific details like stats/history.
Lectures were impossible to sit through. If you buy the course not package (which I suggest), going to class is pointless. I hardly attended class and ended with an 80. Half the class is based on lecture material, and the other half is lab based. Lab is based on your research paper, which is easy to do well on with a good TA.
Very easy marker. No need to attend class because his notes are very in depth. The class title "Animal Cognition", in my opinion, is misleading. This course is about exploiting lab rats to gain info about humans, not about learning about animals. An easy 90 tho, and an interesting course.
The most arrogant man I have ever met. class ins't hard but you have to keep read and memorize like any other psych course. If youre willing to put in the effort its an easy class. He does not help AT ALL HE IS SO RUDE and has the worst exams 160-180 mc questions and has a correction factor that deducts 1 mark per question you get wrong.. BEWARE
I have taken every course Hinson teaches on campus. He literally reads word for word from the course text, so attendance drops to 30% or less by a couple weeks in. Easy prof, and you can forget you are taking his courses till 2 days before the exams and grab an 80% in the course
PLEASE STAY AWAY FROM THIS CLASS. SO BORING. SO MUNDANE. SO HARD. JUST STAY AWAY I BEG YOU ALL
riley is complicated. his final exam was 8 very specific MC qs and 4 very long statisitics questions. it wa so hard we got an extra half hour to the 3 hr old exam. his lectures are mostly read out but sometimes benefit. for the final paper, there are a lot of anal overly specified details he wants and if you dont confine, its 25% penalty
I have taken a few courses of Dr. Hinson's and I truly enjoyed each one. He brings a level of enthusiasm to each lecture that always kept me engaged. I like his idea of using his own notes, makes understanding the material less overwhelming and more interesting.
Phenomenal professor who is extremely knowledgeable about what he teaches and is passionate about the field of research. Took his 2nd year courses and enjoyed all of them. Was very clear about expectations on exams and is a fair marker. Not a bird course but definitely possible to do amazingly well. TBH, wish he taught upper year courses as well.
No textbook but gives you a book with all lecture notes inside. He keeps class interesting with videos and extra details. Information is really interesting and the class doesn't require much work on the side (no papers, quizzes, online discussions)
favourite professor
Horrible. If you benefit from a professor talking at you rather than teaching you, by all means take the course. But if you're like me and don't learn anything from a teacher who could put a potato to sleep and doesn't care if you understand what he's talking about in lecture, nor want to pay $60 for the dullest lecture notes possible, stay away.
Hinson is an excellent professor. He is very clear about his expectations. If you attend classes and read the lecture notes you will do just fine. I highly recommend purchasing the lecture notes, he has written them himself and takes all the material right from there.
Interesting course + professor! Very knowledgable and fair re: what is testable for students. Definitely buy his lecture notes. Only aspect that was KILLER were the 180 MC questions win 1.5 - 2 hours!
Rigid, uncompromising personality. Doesn't mind humiliating students in front of the class for asking questions.
if you study the text notes literally a few days before each exam, you will be fine. No need to go to any lectures. Stats questions on all exams are really not hard at all and you know exactly what type of questions he will ask before each test. There are no tricks at all. Really easy course
super rude to students
Probably the most interesting course I've taken at university. Textbook is the exact notes from the lecture (no textbook reading is a thumbs up). A lot to memorize but the questions are fair and strictly factual. Absolutely loved it
Learned a lot and became very interested in drug addiction field
Show up, do the work and you'll be fine.
horrible, boring, doesn't shut up. Makes an interesting course very boring. He needs to be more interactive. It's like listening to a monotone robot go on and on and on, you just lose track.
Terrible professor. He was very uninspiring, did not make anything clear, and his voice was very monotone. He read straight from the textbook during lecture and was one of the worst professors I have ever had
Such a smart man and probably the best teacher I've had while at Western. Also his accent makes listening to him more interesting somehow
This was by far my favourite course i have taken in the past three years i have studied at western. He is a funny lecturer, and he is clear. You needs to buy his lecture notes, they are magic for studying considering that is exactly what he teaches off of. The tests are straight forward, but 180 MC in 2 hours is stressful
Unhelpful and such an awful prof. I would not recommend him to anyone. Lectures are boring and he reads from his next notes which if you don't pass I doubt you would be able to pass the class.
I really enjoy Hinson's lectures, he's very funny and it is nice to read along with what he is saying with his course notes. I highly recommend buying the course notes, or else its 10x harder to write down everything he is saying, and you definitely don't want to miss any details. The exams however I feel are very hard.
Goes savage on the 95% of the people that skip his class
Terrible prof, most boring prof I've ever had, and explains things not very well
He makes quite a number of funny statements, and you could see (only) him grinning. While coherent, he tries to cover a lot too fast. All the testable stuff is bolded in his textbook. Showed a funny video of people driving high, and external interesting sources. Not too many personal stories, but does relate topics to his research interests.
Dr. Hinson is great, you can clearly tell that he is passionate about his research. He is very knowledgeable and the course is definitely divided into very comprehensible pieces. Everything that is tested is going to be in his book which I strongly recommend buying. If you read it through, the tests are not a problem. Do go to class though it helps
If you go to class, and study for the exams, you will do fine. He's very subtle with his humour. The course content is interesting and eye opening.
Lecture is hard to understand. Tests are nothing like any example you'll see his class. Class is not worth going to but he makes the tests hard to punish people who don't go.
His lectures are unbelievably boring, all he does is read from the textbook that he wrote. Don't even bother going to class because even when you go he explains topics so poorly and makes everything more complicated than needed. Very tough grader and his exams are impossible. always around 6 questions and will take 3 hours to write. Labs are good.
He obviously knows what he's talking about, and it could be a good course. If he only he wasn't so boring! His voice will not change for a whole 2 hours. Textnotes are very heavy and examples used in class and in textnotes are so different to exam. Exam straight forward but very, very hard. Would never ever take again.
Extremely dry lecturer, hard to stay awake. He makes you buy the textbook for class, which he wrote and then in each lecture proceeds to literally read the textbook off of the projector. Not easy to approach at all. I feel that he has been teaching too long and he doesn't care about the material or the students anymore. Do NOT take if you can.
I can see how he might unnerve some people, maybe an acquired taste, but I personally quite liked him! The 180 T/F exams were a bit brutal, esp. considering that marks could be lost for wrong answers. Overall really enjoyed this course and professor. Just don't email him (i.e. better to talk to him in person)... Snap!
This course was tougher than expected and to exceed you will need to buy his note package (which SURPRISE are the slides). Hinson is knowledgable, but his lectures are dry as dirt and the ability to stay awake during his Monday two hour classes is a feat in itself.
Really cool course and really cool prof. Definitely buy his lecture notes; they're pricey but 100% worth it as it is a lot of material. He has a Southern accent which makes it fun to listen to him. Just keep up with material and use flashcards religiously. Very straightforward prof.
Going into this class I had no math background, not even high school math as I started out as an Arts student. If you attend all of his classes, keep redoing all his examples, and view your tests after you get your mark back, you will do great! His lectures can come off as dry, but in his office hours he was helpful. Do the work & you'll do well!
Okay! Here are a few pointers: 1 Purchase the textbook. 2 Attend the lectures actively by taking notes. 3 Keep up with the reading. 4 Exams are straightforward (no tricks) Provided you've put in the work. 5 Dr Hinson is very helpful during the office hours so don't be afraid to utilize this resource. 6 Very intriguing material.
Hinson clearly knows his stuff and is very thorough. He does a good job keeping the material unbiased, interesting, and testable material fair. The text notes cover a lot of detail and if you want a 90 or better you definitely need to review them more than a read or two.
Pros ( Perhaps the only pro): Fascinating material (although the textbook contains several typos). Cons: Dull, dry, mundane, boring, monotonous, lectures. Exams are based primarily on rote memorization, not critical thinking. Memorize thoroughly well and thou shall receive a stellar grade. Critical thinkers, look elsewhere.
This class is very interesting but there are many terms and they all sound similar. If you want to take a bird course do not take this. The final is very hard since he includes pictures
He tells you that the majority of the exam content is on the bolded terms of the textbook, but this isn't exactly true. You need to go to class as a sizable portion of what is tested is unbolded/only in lectures (specifically the pictures he shows in class). I got around an 80% on the first two tests then stopped going to class, got a 46% on final
Nice enough guy but THE most boring lectures. 2 hours of him reading the lecture notes aloud. Also convinced he punishes ppl for skipping by including high value q's on exams basically asking you to parrot back examples from lecture not included in the textbook. Lame but easy to do well with practice questions the TAs give out
Took this course as an elective as it sounded interesting, though the course content was, his lectures and exams are brutal. Lectures are long, dry, and painfully boring. Exams are very difficult with low averages. The textbook is a must, do not try and take notes without it, not possible. Not an easy course.
You can tell he knows what he's talking about, but he is also crazy. There were many disjointed assignments and at no point did I know how I was actually being graded. He pushes you to do the absolute most for the class, which can be both rewarding and frustrating.
This content of this class seems simple enough until the exams which are ridiculously difficult. On top of four exams, there is a research project you must design and complete which takes up too much time. It seems as if Professor Hinson is unaware that his students have other work for other classes as well. Something is due pretty much every week.
lectures are really boring and the exam was werid. i studied really hard and went to every lecture but still got 60s. effort does not match the grade you get.
i am currently enrolled in 2020A and i hate it, i thought the course would be interesting, which it is but i am doing poorly. i have studied but the exams are fairly hard and he is an extremely hard grader
Currently in this class. There are so many things due almost every single week. Lectures are dry as he pulls up a carbon copy pdf of the textbook and reads through it almost verbatim. I went to most classes and did all the practice questions given by my TA and still got thrown off on the first exam, was way more challenging than any example I did.
Took this course thinking it would be an interesting elective. The information is interesting by itself, but when being tested on the smallest detail and statistic of a very long, bland textbook, the content loses its appeal. The final has an unimaginable amount of content in it. I don't recommend this course unless you're willing to dedicate time!
Don't get me wrong, the material covered in this class is very interesting, however this professor is probably one of the worst to be teaching this class. He tests on every single detail so if you aren't the best at memorizing a lot of extensive details, I recommend staying away from this class or you'll have a really tough time passing.
the class itself is interesting but you fully have to memorize all the information because the tests are extremely difficult especially the final
Has a thick Southern accent making lectures pretty enjoyable. Dry sense of humor which frequently get me smiling. The material is incredibly interesting, biggest challenge are the exams, you must memorize almost everything, the textbook is "optional" but i don't see how you could pass without it. I enjoyed this prof.
Unfortunately, Dr. Hinson is not a very good professor. He quite literally reads a PDF of the textbook to us in class, and will accesses detailed statistics from studies in the course notes on the tests, making it difficult for students to reasonably do well in his class. Would recommend against taking this class as a elective or bird course.
Drugs & Behaviour was by far the most interesting course I have taken so far, 10/10 would take again. Hinson uses personal stories to help explain concepts and is very approachable when you have questions. He stayed after class with me multiple times to help understand concepts and was always available when needed. The material was also super fun!
Took this class as a bird and was really happy with it. Content is fairly interesting and he is a good lecturer but can be a little boring at times. YOU NEED TO BUY THE LECTURE NOTES. The main concepts are IN BOLD (study these and you will get easy 70). Three midterms all MC, material is 90% from the book and 10% in lectures (a lot of overlap).
This is more aimed at Pre-meds. Don't take this class as an elective (PSYCH2020). I'm in Med Sci and I took it, and it ended up being one of my hardest courses since Dr. Hinson is hellbent on testing the smallest statistics in the course book. Even the Med Sci profs aren't that cruel. Trust me, avoid this prof and save yourself the trouble.
People make this prof seem horrible, but he does care about his students and appreciates when you actually come to class! He is willing to help. His exams are hard tough, but you can do well in them. Effort is required, study hard! Attending lectures is beneficial and most students don't do that, that's why it's even more difficult to do well!
When online, there is no video or audio lecture to go along with the slides. Get ready to read the textbook and teach yourself. The time given for quizzes is way too short for the amount of work needed to do them.
Probably one of the worst lecturers I've ever had the displeasure of listening to. The text notes he usually forces students to buy are written by him, and are just as confusing and rambling as the lectures. He will spend an entire page covering a subject ridiculously simple and then skip over a difficult calculation. Not really sure why he's here.
ok HOW IS THIS MAN A PROFESSOR???? I wish he would quit already and start a career in golf with how much effort he puts into his courses versus his golf. Didn't even lecture once, just posted other people's slides??? actually hate this man
Worst professor I've had at Western, and I'm in my last year. The least helpful and least understanding person I've ever met, and he doesn't even annotate his lectures, so you have to teach everything yourself.
I know a lot of people say "if __ professor is teaching this course dont take it" and most people take that lightly but if Hinson is teaching this class DO. NOT. TAKE. IT. By far the worst professor I've ever had at Western that clearly does not care about anything other than his pay cheque. Exam questions were so specific, worst prof at western.
The course was 100% test based. He basically didn't even teach the course. You basically wasted your tuition money just to read a textbook. He didn't provide any practice tests or advice. He didn't even expand on the info in the textbook. Don't take this class unless you want to really bring down your grade average.
Worst professor I've had in my 3 years of uni. When I say his exams are hard I mean like trying to convince my Arab parents to let me move out hard, almost impossible. I was excited about the course&his way of teaching and testing ruined that. This was online also bc of Covid, this mans had no sympathy for going easy on the quizzes & final.
This professor has no care in the world for his students. Lectures? NONE. Teaching? NONE. Constructive feedback? NONE. In addition, the exam was hard and very specific. He put 0 effort in helping his students succeed in this course. I highly do not recommend taking it.
This is the worst professor I have ever had in all my years of university. I took this course as an elective and his quizzes were incredibly hard if you didn't memorize the entire textbook word for word. The final exam was the hardest thing I've ever written in my life. This is a great class if you want to destroy your GPA, idk how he's a professor
Prof. Riley Hinson was one of the worst profs I have ever had. His form of teaching was just to go over the textbook and not add anything else. The only way anyone could get good marks on his quizzes and exams is by reading the entire textbook word for word because he writes them on the specific details of the textbook. I hated this class.
Prof. Riley Hinson was one of the worst profs I have had. His teaching style was to go over the textbook and add nothing extra to our learning. His quizzes and exams were so hard you would need to read the entire textbook word for word for his tests. The questions were very detail specific and challenging. I hate this class and dont recommend.
I understand online learning is a challenge, especially in these times. But Professor Hinson was terrible. I regret not dropping the course when I had the chance. You need to memorize every single little thing from the textbook and the tests are very hard. He's also hard to access. Do not take this glass if you'd like a good average
One of the absolute wors teachers I have ever come across in m life. Weekly quizzes and impossible exams. Basically have to memorize the whole textbook and teach yourself the work. I highly recommend dropping as soon as possible. I have never seen someone not teach a class the way he does
WARNING, do NOT take a class if Hinson is the professor. Hinson does not care about his students, their success, or their concerns whatsoever. He is by far the worst professor I have come across and probably ever will. We have expressed many concerns to him throughout the course and all he has done is make it harder for us in any way that he can.
This class is extremely unforgiving and might as well be a self-learning course. He refuses to give feedback for quizzes unless you schedule a meeting and he's unnecessarily strict. You can't turn in anything late, period. If you do, forget a grade, you won't even get feedback. His lectures aren't even helpful, he just reads off the slides.
The course content itself is interesting; however, the students need to essentially memorize the WHOLE textbook (which was written by the prof) to be able to do the exams and weekly quizzes. The testing material is highly specific and detail-oriented.
Worst professor ever. Should not be a professor. I took two classes with him and he was an absolute nightmare.
Really bad professor. Basically just tests random statistics from the textbook. Save yourself the trouble and only take PSYCH 2020 if it's with a different prof.
Dr Hinson seems tough but is willing to put the time in if he sees you are putting in effort. Must read text notes and do practice questions. NEED a tutor if you are not math strong. He spent lots of time in office hours to help me improve my quizzes, really is caring but has no time for people trying to just coast by. Expects prior math ability.
Worst Professor I've had at Western. Does not provide any feedback to quizzes to further succeed on future assessments (ie. the final exam worth 50% of our grade), does not respond to forum posts, very hard to contact, overall disappointed with this course (even though the content is interesting) and more so disappointed with the professor.
Brutal course. If you have time to memorize the entire custom course book you'll do great. Quizzes are fine but the final was one of the worst exams I've ever taken. Prof Hinson seems like a nice guy but this course is very hard to do well in.
10 quizes every week, tough and long. Final is 50%, very tough and hard to communicate. Don't choose this class !!!!! It is not a class that could higher your grade
Such a bad prof. Doesn't give you quiz feedback so it's impossible to improve. I am a hard worker but this prof is seriously absurd. Just spews a bunch of random information at you then asks you random facts on the quizzes and tests. Impossible to do well.
Most unorganized prof I've ever seen. He does not care about his students, so much so that a bunch of my peers had to send emails of concern out to the psychology department regarding this course. Unless you are looking for a university existential crisis, do not take this prof.
The professor's lectures were very dry, and he was extremely difficult to get in touch with. But it's his final exam that takes the cake. He tanked everyone's averages down with the most absurdly difficult final exam I've ever taken in my undergrad, which was filled with questions which were all over the place. I would avoid this prof if you can.
just don't do it lol
Do not ever take a course with this professor. He deserves to be fired expeditiously. No feedback, impossible to reach, and the driest lectures I have ever taken in my life. Ruined and stripped the excitement and joy of a potentially great topic. Fkn useless
He is the worst professor I have ever had. Does not teach and could care less about your understanding the course. He does not give back the quizzes so you cannot learn anything because YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU GOT WRONG - but wait! you can book a zoom appointment with him to go over them but HE DOESNT ANSWER EMAILS. Worst exam I've ever had
if you ever think about taking one of his courses simply just save yourself the pain of his boring and dry lectures and ridiculously detailed test and quizzes questions with an unreasonable amount of time to answer them.
Well, the content itself is interesting, but the grading schema is horrible. The exam weighs 50% and it is so highly detail-oriented that it's extremely hard to do well. Be ready to memorize the whole textbook. Prof. Hinson gives feedback on quizzes only if a zoom appointment is set up, otherwise - no feedback. This course will screw u up.
He makes you buy a textbook that is just his notes, he posts no lecture slides, and his final exams are really difficult. Do not take this course.
Lackluster and tiresome lectures where the professor literally reads off the textbook during the entire lecture. I would not recommend it as an elective under any circumstance. The professor does a splendid job of completely ruining what otherwise is an interesting subject.
good luck
The class was boring, and he didn't even have a ppt or notes in his lectures. The exam questions are not in the book
A very boring professor who does not care about making his lectures entertaining for students and forces you into buying the textbook which is completely unnesscerary, especially for a course that most people are taking as an elective. save your time and money. Calculus might even be easier to learn than this class
This course was not enjoyable at all. The professor would read off of what essentially was a script and we would have to memorize where everything was in order to do the open book quizzes, very difficult when there are no spaces between words and is essentially line upon line of words. Do not recommend taking this course unless mandatory.
The absolute worst professor I have ever had. He doesn't put effort into his teachings and his "Lectures" is just him reading a script of which is his own textbook, not to mention he doesn't post any resources and forces you to buy his textbook. He also wont give you your quiz questions back unless you talk to him in a zoom & ask for it. Ridiculous
This course is pretty good and the prof makes it interesting for most the material. Only thing i didn't like was you had to go to office hours to see what you got wrong on the weekly quizzes. To everyone complaining about the 50% quizzes read the syllabus so maybe you can know what the course is like and not blame the prof. L
The material is interesting. Hinson is an OK prof but mostly reads of the textbook. However, if you want a decent gpa, DO NOT take this course. The final exam was insane. Everyone can agree he makes it extremely hard to do well. The final exam ruined the course for me. If you think it is a "bird" because it's online- you are wrong. good luck
This prof is not good at what he does. He is extremely passive when you ask for help, and doesn't seem to care at all about his students. He makes you purchase his notes as the "textbook" for the course at the UWO bookstore, and has no powerpoint slides that are accessible to the students. 50% of course is quizzes, and other 50% is exams. Good luck
I believe some of the hate this prof received (and continues to) is justified. Yes, he can't reply to emails appropriately, and yes his lectures can be very boring. But most of us have taken this course for its contents, not professor. Self-studying earned me an A+ and the exam was not hard. We had months to understand this professor.
Not sure what the other reviews are talking about... Quizzes and final exam were open book. Final was bell curved to the point where you could get over 100%. Final was worth 50% and quizzes were worth 50% but he would change it to be 60/40 depending on which was higher. Would advise you to ignore the other reviews and take the course!
PSYCH 2020 is definitely challenging in course content, but understanding major experimental designs, drug mechanisms, and tolerance/sensitization can help you answer a significant # of questions. Make sure to email him early on if you don't understand them. A 90+ is totally possible, but requires significant time to memorize small details.
The final exam was very hard as these comments have obviously mentioned. It definitely was one of the hardest exams I've written and unless you thoroughly understand the material like an in person test- you will not pass. It is NOT a bird. However, Hinson himself is a good prof and it was really easy to understand him in lecture.
I am a medsci student and I had hinson last semester, this guy is no joke. He is westerns lap dog and will make sure you fail so they can suck more money out of you. Im an A+ student who does incredible on all my assignments while putting the upmost effort, but hinson finds a way to make the most interesting course harder than medsci courses
The worst professor ever. He does not care about students and will give you extremely short replies with no desire to help with content. His lectures are extremely long and so so boring. He destroyed the opportunity of an interesting and fun course. The final has such specific questions about the smallest thing in lecture.
This is for Psych 3990: Addictions. This is an amazing course. I loved the lectures and content. Prof. Hinson is very knowledgable and it was a pleasure to be able to learn from him. This course is very easy to get an excellent mark in if you show up and do the work.
lectures are pretty bland, the textbook is not much better as he wrote it himself. If you do not buy the textbook & miss class you will NOT PASS as he refuses to post slides. Class consists of him reading straight off his book so if you want to skip lectures you will 100% need the book. Test are ultra specific on arbitrary topics.
At the start of the sem I didn't buy the textbook but went to every class and took DILIGENT notes, wrote down everything he said. The first midterm rolls around and I'm blindsided. 54%. Turns out every exam question is taken directly from the textbook (which he wrote) so if you want to pass you need to spend $80 on his book. worst class ever.
After 2 years of study at Western, the first time I encountered such a boring class, taught with black pen and white paper, without any supporting materials. The exam is also challenging, it tests a lot of drug experiments, I feel in learning chemistry. I recommend all students who want to take psy2020 choose another professor's class.
One of the worse prof I ever had. Took the online course last semester, and the lectures were super dry. if you don't buy the textbook then it's almost impossible to pass quizzes. The textbook was just a copy of a Word document with no picture, you need to check the pictures from his lecture video. the tests have too less time.
Without an absolute doubt Riley Hinson is the WORST professor at Western University. He does not care about his students and will never answer your email. Lectures are so long and boring and quizzes are so specific. Refuses to post slides and makes you buy his little version of a textbook for $80. do not take this class or anything with this man
I wish the course was taught by a professor who knew how to cater to an online student audience and create better tests. His lectures are painfully stretched out for 1+hrs, and he lets a student ramble about irrelevant content. Quizzes include specified statistics mentioned that do not show a true reflection of students' understanding.
I got a 90 in this course but this was the most horrible professor that could have taught me. this is a warning for anyone who is considering taking this course. Don't listen to the class pet weirdos that gave him a 5* on this. He is literally the worst professor i have ever had and is uncaring. Take it at Brescia if you want to enjoy it.
Oh my god, was something id say everytime id attended rileys class. I think I have PTSD from hearing this mans voice. The way he would degrade us with his useless lectures. I never knew you could make a textbook and sell it to students? How is this guy allowed to profit over his required textbook we have to buy. He also told me I should drop out.
I don't even know how to explain this course. its a great idea for a course, but Riley does not do a good job at expanding our knowledge. does not provide ANY feedback, dry lectures, quizzed on minuscule details, no supporting material, honestly just impossible to do well in this course. all u need to know is: DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. RUN WHIL U CAN
Genuinely fought for my life in this class. I normally enjoy the contents of this class but he somehow managed to make it insufferable. Please if you can run away or switch out I encourage you to run.
I like the course and I have a much better understanding of SUDs. No real tests except for one take-home test written on 2 questions I felt were very fair. I made a point to participate fully and submit great work and the guy didn't remember me when I asked for help with something after I was done with his class. That left a bad taste in my mouth.
Out of my 4 years of post secondary. I've never had such a horrible professor. Firstly, he reads his textbook word for word in his lectures. Secondly, emailing him is a headache, you either get no reply or a response that doesn't help at all. Lastly, his quizzes are the worst. Grabs minuscule information from the book and expects you to know it.

Took this class as an elective and thought it would be interesting however the lectures are copying his black and white text from a document that he reads off. You will be copying the notes for at least 2 hours per week. Thought the final wasn't proctored but it was however you are allowed printed notes. Take this course at your own risk...
Took this class hoping it would boost my avg and be an interesting course and I was immediately humbled. You're only marked on 2 things, weekly quizzes and a final worth 50%. He also is no help when it comes to answering questions. Trust me this isn't the class you're looking for if you're wanting to get a good mark in a lower maintenance class
I did not study much for this course other than final, but I went to every lecture and paused between videos to take notes of every single highlighted line. The content was interesting but not easy to do well. I ended of with an 80 as I found the final extremely difficult with all very detailed Mcs that were very difficult to answer
Bro thinks he's teaching in the 50's.
Terrible
How is this guy a professor? He doesnt care about his students and his teaching methods are very outdated. IF YOU HAVE THIS PROFESSOR DROP THE COURSE!!!! and for those who ignore this warning i told you so. Hinson all of your students think the same, you are a joke to the education system and western as a whole. He needs to be fired
The course is quite challenging, with a heavy emphasis on weekly quizzes and a 50% final. The professor is not very helpful when answering questions. For study prep, I found tools like unstuck study and the provided textbook to be more useful than the lectures.
The negative reviews on here are unfortunately quite accurate. He reads off his own notes during the entire lecture. The "textbook" he uses is just a word doc he wrote himself and he makes us pay $80 just for a bunch of paper!!! On top of that, the man does not even use proper grammar/punctuation so it can be frustrating to read. 0/5.
too many bad things to even say. if i go too specific ill get in trouble!
He is the worst literally reads out a huge word document and calls it a “lecture” and won't let us have the word document which are the class notes unless we pay 80 DOLLARS AND every email he sends he references the class notes. literal money grab. he is the worst mark my words do.not.take. this. class.
thought this would be an interesting course, prof has very outdated method, little to no passion shown through the course. I read the reviews of him and thought I could handle it, but honestly plz don't take this class. all of these reviews are correct, I promise there are other easier/more interesting electives. will make another post after final
Hinson makes uwo look bad by representing the department of psychology. The guys class is just him reading his textbook right off the page, with 0 effort put into it. I am begging you all reading this, please do not take this class. Save your time, effort, and money and invest it in a prof who actually gives af about teaching, clearly he doesn't
Scam of the education system, forcing you to buy his poorly written textbook, which he just sits and reads and calls that a lecture. Content was somewhat interesting, but didn't really get to enjoy it because of the teaching methods. Spread the word, please do not take this class, you are doing yourself a huge favour!!!!
The text notes are by no means required to purchase. I enjoyed having them instead of pausing the video to type out notes on what was said. Also I feel like Hinson was fairly passionate about the subject despite what others say. Just watch the lectures in 2x if you're bored. Better yet, don't take a class expecting it to be a bird course.
do not take
Do not take.
WORST CLASS I HAVE EVER TAKEN. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. There are no lecture slides or documents, he only makes long videos promoting his own textbook. The quiz and exam questions ARE SO HARD AND ANNOYINGLY SPECIFIC. This might be the first CLASS and exam I've ever failed because the exam is worth 50% of your entire grade.
most recent comment that isn't negative is 100% written by Hinson. This class was literally him reading his own book to us, and for the quizzes and tests we were expected basically know the whole thing. He would mainly focus on a few tiny details that no one in their right mind would study. Cannot believe I and so many others took this class, run!
HARDEST EXAM OF MY LIFE, RUN AS FAR AWAY AS YOU CAN, THIS CLASS WILL NOT HELP YOU IN THE LONG RUN
DO NOT take this course!! I took it as an elective since it has a pretty cool description. Hinson has online quizzes each week which are almost impossible...You would think an online course would be manageable but with 2 lectures a week plus a weekly quiz, goodluck. PLUS the final exam is worth 50%, a death trap! Listen to the reviews, i wish i did
He spends his whole time "teaching" by promoting his personal Word doc that he calls a textbook. Oh, also you have to pay $80 for it. You may as well e-transfer him because even if you buy it there's no publisher and editors. He puts the most obscure facts on the exam that were mentioned once. Run while you still can this course is impossible.
My biggest issue with this course was the final exam. Genuinely the hardest exam I've ever taken, and I'm not exaggerating+ it was worth 50%. It's open book but the notes barely helped because you have 2 mins per question and they're the most ridiculously difficult questions. My grade dropped 22%. Save your GPA and do not take it. Wish I didn't.
So disappointed by this course. I was actually interested in it at first, and the quizzes were ridiculously specific but I managed. Final dropped my mark by so much it feels like a waste that I even took this course. Don't take it literally choose anything else
No matter how smart you are, DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. Out of my 4 years taking psychology courses, I thought i could manage but I nearly failed. His questions are ridiculously difficult and specific. His textbook is so poorly written, as it is just a continuous body of writing in a word doc consisting of over 4000 lines of material.
Curved exam saved my grade, but all the comments below are true. Do not be fooled by the structure, a 50% exam will drop your grade, the Q's were extremely specific and not relevant much to the course. I found it very hard to flip through my notes on a 2 hr exam looking for the smallest details. Unless required, or extremely passionate, don't take
Lectures somewhat difficult to get through, no powerpoints, all hand written notes for open book exam. The text notes you can buy are zero help. However, If you put in the time to take good notes, you actually manage to learn a lot and the content is very interesting even though the delivery was a tad confusing.
He is a good professor, however the final is challenging. If you make notes during the lectures and listen actively you'll do well (the curve helps). The lectures are just him reading off of the textbook which can be hard for some to get through, but if you like the material it is interesting.
Don't be fooled - the 2 recent 5 star reviews are 99.999% likely to have been written by the prof himself, it's so obvious. Worst class, worst prof, worst grades, worst exam. Don't take this class ever.
I would rather rip the nails off my fingers than take his class again. Awful prof, awful course structure, and an ABSOLUTELY gruesome exam. Please, I beg you take anything else, save yourself from this course before you have 8 mental breakdowns preparing for the atrocity of a final this prof gives you. Worst exam of my life, cried at least thrice.
for such a seasoned and seemingly respected (by the university i mean) professor, i was shocked to see this man DOES NOT KNOW HOW TO WRITE EXAM QUESTIONS. Example: "which of the following statements is true" and the options would be the most obscure info from random topics... NOT the same topic or same general theme. impossible final. run.
The worst professor I've ever had during my time at western. The exam is so unfair it's insane I don't know how this course is continuing to be offered. It was the only time in university I've ever gotten in the 60s. Run.
The reviews for this class are fairly accurate but if you buy the text and create a table of contents for yourself it makes a world of difference. Class is hard but he is passionate about the subject and enjoys answering questions. Focus on learning to navigate the textbook using your table of contents instead of trying to memorize everything in it
If you do the work to read, review, and understand the content, this class is great. The text is dense but also interesting and relevant, and there's a lot of overlap with the lectures, which makes it easier to remember stuff for quizzes/exams. The tests aren't super easy but they don't trick you, either - do the work, and they are straightforward.
The exam is EXTREMELY difficult!!!! 50% of the grade all multiple choice Every question involves “which of the following is not true” with ridiculous hard to comprehend statements with obscure random facts from different sections of the course. There are also no slides to review only lecture videos so take DETAILED NOTES. Anything said is tested
I took this course in my fourth year and have never received anything below a 70. When I read the reviews and thought everyone was being dramatic about the final as I had received good grades on the quizzes. My grade dropped 20% - save yourself the poor grade and time.
Do not take this class. I studied and was prepared, yet my grade dropped 30% and it was the first exam I ever failed. One question on the the exam asked for 2 standard deviations below the mean of a number. Answer not in textbook, requiring math never taught in this course. Overall, it was a poorly designed exam. Regret taking this course.
