Just finished this class. It was not too bad 3 tests/1 drop and a final. She seems new at teaching, and just had a kid so she was a bit distracted at times, also her writing is kind of sloppy. But I did like her she made the three hours go by quickly. She is very pleasant when you speak to her. I would take her again and recommend her to others.
Rima can't teach or speak English. Don't take her! Yeah, her grading may not be that stringent, but it ends up being ridiculously difficult because you never learned the material to begin with. If you're going to devote your time to copiously studying for a class, why not learn something along the way?
Her english is very hard to understand at times and it is very difficult to stay interested. She makes you memorize things that are a waste of time. I would not reccommend her. I did well but mostly because I stayed after my lab and asked a lot of question to professor Ziccardi. Take him. He is the best!
This lab class is without any direction. Take an instructor who actually instructs their students. This is a lower division chemistry lab class with inexperienced students playing with chemicals most never touched before. As a person, she's great to talk to. As a chemistry lab teacher? How did she get the job?
One of my worst experiences in a class. She's just a poor teacher. She missed a lot of classes & is late a lot then yells at the class to hurry up. She didn't show up for final because she had a cold. She also left early a number of times, again telling people to hurry because she was leaving. I wouldn't take her again if you paid me to. Sucks!!
Some teachers make it a priority to make class interesting, especially one as difficult as Chemistry. It seems that this didn't make her list of priorities. Lectures were long and unclear, then when questions were asked, she'd answer her own questions leaving everyone more confused than when they'd walked in. Do yourself a favor and look elsewhere
I originally signed up for her husband because he is an outstanding professor in the process of writing his own chemistry book. She on the other hand doesn't know what she's doing. Students go and ask her questions, she tells them to read the book. So she doesn't help. She's a good person to talk to but professor wise, how did she get the job?
Eventhough her English is not perfect, Rima knows chemistry and teaches it well. She was helpful and caring.
She seems to dislike teaching. She is unhelpful and a bit rude at times. If you ask a question she'll tell you to read the book, almost insinuating that you're a slacker and that you haven't read it at all. I guess she thinks you should read and then know everything, so as to not waste hr time with foolishness like asking for clarification on stuff
Rima Teaches well and is prepared for labs. Her exams are reasonable and overall she is a good lab instructor
You'll enjoy this class. Rima is a great professor, you really do get the feeling she cares about her students. Tests are not really hard, but you must study in order to do well. Before each test, Rima reviews everything you need to know. Labs are graded conservatively. If you need help, Rima will always be there. Thank you Rima:) -Mohammad
If you know your stuff you will do well, Rima is a very nice person to talk to even though her english isnt that well, she trys very hard to make the material best understood for the students
She is a very nice professor and helpful with alot of things i appricate her for giving up a study guide for every exam she gives us. She is a very sweet person. -Jason
thank you professor abbas! shes very helpful, will answer questions and very nice! just dont ditch class!
Excellent professor.
At Miracosta she seems like a nice person but is awful as a teacher. She knows the material but has a very thick accent and is hard to understand. She expects students to know the material instantly and gets upset if you ask for help. She acts as though she would rather be doing something else. Not very helpful. Wouldn't recommend her.
Alright teacher, except her accent doesn't help understanding her. Write neatly and dont cross out your work or she'll hate you like she hated me. oh and if you like talking she will also hate you. NOT RECOMENDED
She is a horrible teacher. Chemistry lab work was easy but her tests were hard because you didnt really know what to expect on the test. Dont take this class.
Rima was knowledgeable and prepared her labs well so that she was helpful. Has an accent that is understandable.
Beyond hard test, each test is about 6-7 pgs with not enough time to finish. She doesnt like to answer questions, she even laughed at one student for asking a question that she thought was stupid. All in all she is horible and should never teach!
Rima teaches from her heart and has passion for the subject. She has an accent but is approachable and friendly
I don't know why stidents like the one below are allowed to use this forum to propagate false information to other students. Mrs Abbas was a good teacher who was compassionate and caring and did a good job teaching.
Difficult tests. She quickly goes through power point slides with hardly enough time to write the information. If you have a question she doesn't really answer it. Her accent makes it difficult to understand. None of her exams or quizes have multiple choice. Including the cumulative final exam. If you struggle with Chemistry do not take this class.
Rima was a sweet lady who cared about chemistry. She was always willing to help and talk to you during office hours and go over things after class. She did move fast so if chemistry isn't your thing I'd recommend another professor
She is the sweetest person! She will help you if you are willing to do well in he class. Her tests are a bit hard, but if you attend every lecture and take notes, you will get at least a B! I would take her again.
If you take notes then you will pass! Yes her accent is hard to understand at times. I did hate how we had to keep track of our own grades. She never really used Black Board and that was something that I wished she did. Yes the tests are not multiple choice but she covers every answer you will have on the tests.
Her lectures are clear even though she does have an accent and forgets her words occasionally. The tests follow her lectures and her grading is straightforward! Make sure you do all your labs in the correct format! She is also helpful if you have questions during the lab. Take her class!
I enjoyed her class and method of teaching. I absolutely recommend her.
Great proffesor ! I'm glad I was able to get into her class! She explains concepts in a straightforward, clear, and concise manner. Places emphasis on topics that will be in the test, and is ready and available to answer questions if needed! The class was definetly challenging for me since I had never taken a Chem class.
Great instructor! she made topics understandable and was always available if you needed help.
Awesome professor! She could have used a better book but as far as her teaching style it was great!
I had checked out the comments on rate my professor before enrolling last semester. It made me hesitant to take her class. After completing it, I can say that she presents the material in an organized manner, is helpful, & fair. If you do the work, you will be successful in her class. My guess is the people who complain aren't doing the work.
She tells you what you need to know for the tests, she goes through powerpoints pretty fast but she posts them all on blackboard and asks before moving on. All semester homework is posted the 1st week of class. She posted a final review, gave extra credit for it, so do the homework and do good in lab cause it really helps your grade.
Terrible professor. Did not explain anything well. Lectures were extremely unhelpful. She is hard to understand. Quizzes and tests were very difficult. Does not give any information about what will be on the tests. Would not recommend this professor at all.
If you don't miss class, you'll do fine. This professor is very helpful and knowledgeable about Chemistry. She also tells you what will be on her midterm and her final!
I overall like her. She is easy to understand, and the quizzes/tests tend to be easier than the homework. The only thing I don't really care for, is that she doesn't grade the homework so I don't really know what I'm doing wrong until I take a test. But its a minor issue. If you study and attend all the classes you will do well.
Rima Abbas is overall a really good teacher. Although she does go through lectures pretty quickly, she always posts them on blackboard. I would definitely take her again. As long as you study and put time into it you will pass. She is a fair grader.
She's amazing. I only had her for lab but she was absolutely amazing. I would take her again. She lectures before labs and her lectures are extremely clear. She cares about her students and will help everyone. She's a super easy grader and wants you to succeed. Highly recommended, you'll have fun and learn. She has an accent but it isn't thick.
I had her for lab. My lecture professor was very unclear but when it came time for lab she had to reexplain his lectures and made them a lot more clear. She was also very helpful. I would definitely take this professor again!
She is an amazing teacher with high expectations from her students.
Overall she was alright, moves quickly in the lecture so the class could be difficult if you struggle in chemistry. Homework was once a week and helpful. Tests were usually easier than the homework. Posts great power points on blackboard too so you can review
She is lovely. The sweetest chemistry professor I have ever had. Warm smiles and will help you until you have understood the material, will also answer any question you have. She only lectures for about 15 minutes just to go over new material, and will even go over material if you are behind in the Lecture section as well. Only 2 tests, no quizzes.
The power points she teaches from are your saving grace. Abbas is clear in the lecture, but studying the powerpoint more is very, very helpful. Tough grader. Homework is not checked for accuracy. I learned a lot in her class. Study the power points, work hard, and you will do fine in the class.
She is a nice person but not right for Chem 100. It seems like she knows everything all too well that she forgets we are just learning it. She goes through slides super fast so I would say to print them out. There are no study guides. If you're taking multiple classes I wouldn't suggest taking this one.
She is absolutely lovely. Extremely helpful, kind, and warm hearted. Even if you aren't comfortable with chemistry, she will help you until you have learned the material. Super relaxing class with a brief lecture before you start the lab that day. You don't get any quizzes, just a couple super easy tests. Trust me, you will do amazing in her class.
Professor Rima Abbas teaches a tough course but if you pay attention to her lectures and the material she covers during her lectures you will succeed. Her quizzes and tests are based heavily on her lectures. Review her powerpoint and base your studying on the material she teaches and you will succeed. Her class is difficult but a good class.
She goes through material extremely fast. Her tests are concept driven, and may not always look like the PP's. The only practice problems given are in class, and through Sapling. The book complicates things, and does not resemble her tests.. She will often teach concepts differently than the text. She does not repeat herself, so pay attention!
Great professor! Pay attention, don't skip class and work for your grade! :)
I took Rima for both Chem100 Lecture and Lab. She is very helpful when you go up to her after class and ask her your questions. The same is true in Lab. Just ask and she will give you a detailed explanation of how to solve your issue. Her tests are easy for the most part. Her accent is brought up often here and it isn't bad at all. Overall, 10/10!
The class material is difficult and she does not do the best job of explaining. If you are taking this class be prepared to be spending a lot of your time in the STEM center for extra help. Textbook and YoutTube are also great help.
Never took chem in high school or any chem class for that matter so I was a bit nervous. In all honestly I'm sure I could have received a B in her class but that's on me for slacking off in the beginning. If you study you will pass. 15 online HW assignments for the whole semester, not too bad. Her final and final review really saved me in the end
For chem 100 she is not helpful at all ! She is rude ! During lecture she goes extremely fast through her PowerPoints . All of her quizzes and tests are free response not even multiple choice. If you have other classes and are working. Definitely get a different prof. She expects to spend all your time studying cause she not able to teach us .
This is a class that you have to put 150% effort and receive maybe a C if you're lucky. Overall grade of the class was 51% so that tells you I wasn't the only one. All the homework is online and the system wouldn't work for me so I lost alot of points there. Also, all quizzes and exams are free response. It was the most challenging class so far.
I thought Prof Abbas was really good. She's tough but if you pay attention you'll learn the stuff. Don't try and copy the powerpoint slides when taking notes because she goes thru the slides too fast, but she posts the powerpoints online, so just print them out.
Very helpful with lab experiments if you don't get it right away. Very strict and gets the lecture down better than the lecture professor.
She is a great professor!! Starts all labs with a short lecture and lab instructions that are very useful!
Rima is a great teacher who supports her student and cares a lot about their success.
She is always available to help her students and makes concepts easy to understand. She is very clear and accessible. I highly recommend her
Not bad but would settle for Mark Raymundo instead. My boy posts the answers that led my girlfriend and I thought the semester. Mark is a real one. Mark if you're reading this, you made chemistry fun for me again.
Granted I only had an asynchronous lab, but she mysteriously stopped replying to any messages I sent to her through multiple platforms. She gives you a week, and several attempts to do the labs which are very helpful. I wouldn't mind having her again, but not getting any responses dropped my scores for things I couldn't control.
Avoid this class. She will not respond to you on any platform, all of her labs are graded through quizzes & you often can't see what you got wrong. She did not grade things from April until the day before grades were due. Spent the entire semester chasing her down & hoping my grade would turn out well. Had zoom on Mondays couldn't get help for labs
She just goes over the slides, takes weeks to grade assignments that aren't due online or automatically graded. Quizzes are all short answer and require multiple formulas but she doesn't all a chest sheet. The class average on exams is 40-60%. She expects students to remind her to post labs and there is always a typo or error in the instructions.
Does not respond to emails. Only reads off of slides, your better off teaching yourself. Hard to understand due to thick accent. Average class score is always really low. Be prepared for quizzes every week and tests every other week. Do your best to avoid this teacher. Super nice lady but not the best teacher.
A few things to note: - accent is kind of heavy however, this wasn't an issue for me after a few lectures - very nice - takes time to answer questions in lecture - Not good at responding to emails - Doesn't really do partial credit - Potential language barrier - isn't on top of grading - no study guides or direction before exams/quiz - disorganized
I highly recommend this Professor Abbas. She is extremely nice, approachable and fair. Her prelab lectures are very helpful and she is always around the students to assist them and give proper instructions.
I took professor Abbas for chem 100 lab and she was wonderful! She is not a tough grader and is really flexible in her homework and submissions. I forgot to to do some of her homework and prelabs in the beginning of the term and she still allowed me to submit the work later. Such a sweet professor and is willing to help all students.
She definitely had the vibe of never having taught a lab for chem 100 but was very helpful and understanding, adjusting to the students as the need arose.
Best Professor I have had in a while. Super nice and very caring about each student.
Fantastic lab professor. Is very concise and to the point. Fantastic short lectures that waste no time to fill in information needed for the lab.
She cares about her students and wants to ensure that you will succeed in this class as well as other classes that follow. She is very clear with instructions and is willing to help any student that might be struggling or needs extra guidance during experiments. Your effort and participation will reflect on your grade. Highly recommend.
Professor really connected leture and lab. Meaning, each experiment was beneficial in further understanding the topics from lecture even if it was another teacher.
Gives clear instructions, guidelines, and expectations, very willing to answer questions. The majority of the assignments were not graded until the end of the semester so I had a few points taken off with no clear explanations. Overall helpful and thorough professor will help you become efficient in the techniques learned.
I took her for Chem 100L, in 15 minutes she explained what my lecture professor couldn't do in 1.5 hours. She's an understanding professor who cares about her students. Her instructions for lab material were concise to the point. During lab she's easily available to answer any questions about the lab or chemistry concept.
Loved her for Chem 100L, and retook her for 110. She understands chemistry and will teach the material well. Plenty of practice problems during the lecture before exam days. Engaging lectures, slight accent, completely understandable. She doesn't go beyond the textbook/material and keeps things simple(chem gets complicated, please study).
FANTASTIC lab professor. Understands and can teach the necessary concepts, procedures, and techniques required to be successful in a chem lab. I found her to be understanding and approachable for any questions or confusion you may have DURING lab. Her grading makes perfect sense, and 100% tells you how well you understand the material. Sig Figs!
I applied to her class because there was no one else left. Big mistake. Not a nice lady, always seems annoyed when you ask for help. No leniency whatsoever. No note card for tests(I'm someone who benefits from these since there's a million formulas to be memorized in chem) You also have to pay for homework. Overall, horrible experience.
She only reads off 40-60 slide long presentations for lecture. She goes
Not sure why the reviews are this low, but she's a kind and easygoing professor. Labs can take a bit of time, but for the most part are easy. Make sure to show up to all of the labs in order to do well on the lab exams
Condescending. Very judgmental. Traumatized. Run away while you still can.
Lectures are useless, exams are difficult are not at all from the online homework/worksheets/slides. The course is exam-heavy. Does not allow note cards. She does not even have an office in the NS building! On one of the exams, she made a mistake with the wording of question even substitute chem professor was shocked to see how crazy she could be.
For a class with 7 different exams, she doesn't give any practice material to work with. Most of the exam questions were not on the homework. I never felt prepared for any of the tests, and I never was.
This professor seems intimidating at first, but she really cares about student success. If you naturally struggle with chem, this is not the professor for you. Tests are not multiple choice and it seems points are arbitrarily taken off sometimes. Very good at explaining topics and tests are consistent with each other. Study the lecture slides
She comes off as blunt but if you do well and show interest in her class she is a kind and very good teacher. Just pay attention to the lectures and do practice problems from slides
Pretty good prof, may look intimidating but doesn't bite. If you ever need help, go up to her. Tests are often just memorization with some math, but not too hard. Slides do seem long, but it's just practice. Recommend having a buddy to be with you in this class; both classes can be challenging if you aren't accountable for yourself.
