Dr. DasGupta is great. Very professional but at the same time, maintains a casual approach to teaching. She expects a lot from her class but is always willing to help. She encourages class participation and is very easy to listen to with a great sense of humor. She assigns one chapter and a written exercise a week, so not too much homework.
Hey! I'm the first to rate Prof. Dasgupta. She is a good teacher and tries to get the class to talk their ideas out and participate. Very open to your thoughts and comments. Good demeanor and professionalism. Doesn't mind explaining things when asked. Fun, intelligent class that helped me to clear my head about alot of world issues.
I think this is her 1st year here, so she's very casual on her teaching. All powerpoint slides, she does get irritable somedays and you can unknowingly set her off. great grading, attendence is mandatory, not too strict and very laid-back and easy. Homework is 1 chapter and an internet exercise which isn't that hard. Take her, she's interesting.
DasGupta is a demanding teacher, but you will definitely get your moneys worth if you put in the time. Class had 2 mid terms, a major essay and a final. I'd say she grades fairly easy if you follow her guidelines. I'd recommend taking it
Dr. DasGupta is a great prof. Her class was informative without being dry, and she facilitates good classroom discussions. She relies pretty heavily on the book, but covers the reading material regularly in class, and is happy to answer questions. Her tests are challenging, but not unreasonable, and she only has 3 of them. She's a chill lady.
Loves what she teaches. If you show up and participate you will do fine. She can not stand goofing off. She is very helpful and very professional. She relys on the book a lot. Very little himework. Just reading.
she is a feminist. fine by me. but she was rude and I was left many times feeling diminished by her. she hated my final essay and gave no real reason why it was a failure. I will say that she left me with a LOT of knowledge about sociological points of view and a far broader perspective of many topics I previously was unaware of.
she hated me from the begining and was very rude!! on the midterm day i was in the hospital, i got her a document from the doc explaining how ill i was and she didnt even bother looking at at and didnt let me make up the midterm, even thou i was a good students and did well on the other midterm, final, and project, she came me an F!!!
Great teacher and amazing class!
For me personally, the subject was interesting but all she did was reitterate from the book and that didnt help me learn at all. She is definitly nice, but too much of your grade weighs on tests. You MUST read, little hw, but tons of pressure to do well on tests
Pretty easy class. No homework except for reading. Grade depends completely on the exams, which there were 3 of, and one presentation/essay. Relies heavily on text book and lectures were boring for the most part. Powerpoints everyday.
This teacher is awful. She is very condescending, and very unapproachable. She spends too much time worrying about distractions or people leaving her class. She reiterates what's in the book, and definitely makes class boring with her long lectures. I would not recommend, there are better teachers out there.
Dr. DasGupta is excellent. She not only knows her subject very well, she has a great sense of humor with it. I can only imagine how hard it must be to deal with some of the jackwagons who end up in these courses, but she handles it well. I definitely want to take more courses from her!
DasGupta is an excellent teacher, and I see the world differently after taking this class.
Good teacher. passionate about soc. humorous. connects well to students. keeps things interesting. Highly recommend
Her class is just lecture, about 4 tests, a paper, & final. her lecture slides are mostly what's in the textbook. She takes attendance by having you sign your name. She's quirky & sarcastic, somewhat friendly, but not very warm. You can tell she's smart. Not a bad class, but she will always keep you in class until 12-10 minutes before class ends.
Do your reading, show up and participate, study and you will do fine. Dr. Dasgupta is a smart women. She is Charming, engaging and funny. Don't shown up late or leave early.
Teacher is very nice. Can be helpful if you know what to ask. Only home-work is to read book and study for all test and essay. Test is high points for little amount of question: 30 questoins equals 100 points. Not an easy class, unless you like Sociology.
Totally unapproachable . Don't go into into this class thinking No question is a stupid question cause she makes u feel otherwise
DasGupta is an amazing teacher! She explains things very thorougly and engages you in topics. She's really into what she teaches! I learned a lot. She also cares about her students. I loved her class!
Mrs. Dasgupta would just read from the overhead screen, then explain each thing, and took attendance everyday. the class had three tests plus a final. for each test, she would give a study guide, and asked for a couple essays. overall, a not so hard class, you just have to do the work and do pretty good at it
This teacher was cool and kinda funny. Interesting lectures and you learn a lot. I liked her and would definitely recommend anyone to take her. Tests were easy if you studied the study guide. Overall good teacher
great teacher. classes are easy and and assignments are few. mostly powerpoint lectures and some videos. she is easy to understand, easy going, and makes a funny every once in a while.
I really enjoyed Ms. DasGupta's Soc30 class. She engages the class in group discussion and group participation. It is important to read the text, take notes, use the study guide and show up to class. It makes for a recipe of success.
DasGupta is so sweet and nice! She's really into her subject and you can tell because she's not like other teachers who ramble on and on about their personal lives. DasGupta is fully focused on teaching the material as best she could and likes class participation. I was extremely quiet in her class and managed to get a C in her class. Take her!
I love the subject, so I was into the class. DasGupta is helpful if you go to her office hours. There were a few times in class where she got a bit huffy, because students were talking. She has a tendency to treat people like idiots when that happens... humiliation is an awful teaching technique. But, besides that I dig her. Do the reading!
Dr. R is a pretty cool teacher. She is the one who made me change my major to Sociology. She's full of knowledge and is ready to help you if need be. Overall, class is pretty easy. One "big" essay and three small exams. Great class.
For my class Dasgupta was not teaching after she went out on maternity leave. But we got stuck with her tests which were hard and the study guides did not help any at all. If you take her class make sure you read the text and take notes of what you read. She does a slide show for class which did not help for the test at all.
Hard tests, lots of work. You must read the chapters weekly and be willing to take a test that is oddly worded but multiple choice. Unhelpful study guides. Lots of essays and projects.
I really enjoyed the hybrid Soc 1 class. Interesting lectures and very doable homework. She is very funny, yet insightful. All tests are online and only 25 questions. Optional review sessions before each test that are very helpful. I would highly recommend the class!!
I LOVED her class. It was a hybrid class and she took full advantage of the online portion. Exams are online (open book!) and never over the top hard. Her lessons and homework is to the point. Only two short papers. Not super strict on attendance. Very smart woman and very funny! Highly recommend
I took this class online and it was very easy. Open book tests, weekly posting and a posting every week. I enjoyed the flexibility but do not think I really learned a lot about the subject bc the lectures are just powerpoints and there is little discussion with classmates unlike many other online classes. I did enjoy how straight forward it was.
I absolutely loved everything about this teacher. She is absolutely hilarious and throws in many jokes throughout class. You have only one hw assignment a week and it's really not too hard. She is straight forward with her expectations and you know she will keep her word. If you like a teacher that is sarcastic and fun take her! u won't regret it
She is a very nice teacher. But her study guides do not help at all when it comes to the test. I did my study guide and studied off of it and when it was time for the test nothing that i studied was on there! She pretty much has her TA do all the grading and study sessions, all she does is the small lectures. I took this as a hybrid class! EASY
You should get a decent grade as long as you do the weekly homework and the two papers that are assigned(not very hard). There are three exams--two midterm and final. All work/exams thru Moodle. In light of that fact, Dr. Dasgupta is a bit slow to report grades--she has not yet posted them("officially").
This is a class that is all book/lecture and testing, which is, personally, not my favorite. One research paper due, plus a test every 3 chapters or so, then a final. Pretty easy as long as you pay attention. In class, she's fun and has a sense of humor, likes to discuss student questions and experiences. Overall, not a bad class.
Dr. Dasgupta was an alright teacher. I stopped reading the textbook for class because it keep class interesting. Her power points involve only copy and pasted definitions from the book. He power points were extremely basic yet her test were sometimes tricky. Her study guides consist of terribly broad words like race, and family. She can be funny.
Very simple & straight forward online class. Since it was online, I never met the teacher in person, but she seemed very nice and I loved each topic.
This is my second semester with her I took SOC 1 and SOC 2, she is an amazing and funny teacher. Her lectures are long but they are interesting and not boring. I took the hybrid class 1 day of lecture and 1 day online. Pretty easy.
I took her hybrid class and really enjoyed the material. The textbook is very comprehensive. You are more likely to pass the 25 minute exams, which are easy if you go to the study sessions! Readings are a must for weekly assignments. Overall, I learned a lot about the basics and it'll help if you go on to other soc classes. I recommend taking it.
I LOVE this teacher! She is so funny! I am taking her sociology 2 class and would have dropped it but I checked it out for this first week and stayed because A) her speaking voice is truly beautiful to listen to & B) the class is interesting. As long as you memorize the terms on the study guide you will pass. It's very easy & enjoyable.
I love this class! All you need to do is take notes on the power points and study the terms she tells you to on the study guides and will you pass every test with an A. The class is really straight forward & actually interesting. If you like to talk and share your input, this class is for you. Highly recommend!
I had to work for it. Don't expect your term paper to graded right away, even if you turn it in 10 days before it's due. 350 out of 500 points is required to get at least a C or P. So you need to do the term paper as best as you can. You only have 25 minutes for each exam, use lecture notes to get at least an 80, but study more to get higher.
Yes you have to work hard to receive an A, but not too hard! To get anything lower than a B, you MUST be trying to fail. The professor is so straight forward with what she wants, as long as you pay attention and study you will get an easy A. The class is enjoyable and the teacher is FUNNY, GREAT and NICE! I wish this prof taught ALL of my classes
I wish she was my mom. and my bestfriend. and my math teacher.
She is very helpful and understanding. I came to her office hour and she went through everything I don't understand before the exam. Her class is quite interesting and she welcomes opinions from any people in class. She's little strict if you don't keep quiet in class or do your private things. Her test is a little hard though.
This one of those classes for me that I took because it was part of fulfilling my general ed. I dont have much interest in sociology, so a lot of this material was very dry to me. But the teacher was good, if you have any kind of interest in this subject you'll like her.
Realistically, all this course is, is an exercise in showing up once or twice a week and figuring out the best way to echo the instructor's personal socio-economic political leanings. Course was VERY easy, but if you don't agree with the instructor's personal beliefs, better keep your mouth shut, because the only "right" answers are her opinions.
She is very inspirational. This was a hybrid class once a week lecture and homework online. Do the reading. She likes what she teaches and she wants you to like it too. Homework wasn't to difficult as long as you do it, generally your opinions are good enough answers. Tests are quick but if you payed attention you'll do fine.
Tests are 25 problems in 25 minutes. 3 tests, 10 message posts, 1 paper. This class is ridiculously easy! Take it!
Textbook was not necessary at all. Overall a very boring class and I did not learn anything new.
DasGupta is very funny and a good lecturer. Attendance is mandatory. If you do all the assignments and show up for the study sessions it is easy to get an A but you have to do the reading. She is always available during office hours and the T.A. is very helpful.
enjoyed going to class and lectures. two tests and a paper
easy online class. 3 exams, 10 discussions, and a term paper. will not accept late work
Took this class online. Well organized and interesting. Super easy if you have taken any Soc classes. Almost too easy, but hey, I'm not complaining!
Beware! Ms Dasgupta gives her teacher's assistance complete say in what your grade is! Beware they are CLOSE friends! Very impatient, very critical of how students listen in class and is quick to point out students not taking notes as she wants them to! Instructs students to answer homework question online and then accuses them of plagiarism!
Mrs. DasGupta is a reasonable professor. I wouldn't say her class is outrageously difficult but it's not an easy A either. There is a lot of reading for homework and tests. Study guides for tests are gone over in class beforehand. There are a few opportunities for extra credit. She will give good feedback if you reach out to her.
She is a great professor that just gets straight to the point. Attend class, do the homework and take notes, study and you'll get an A.
I was very unimpressed with this teacher. Most of her "lectures" consist on on her espousing her own moral viewpoint on various issues, and this is not a venue for disagreement or conversation, you simply listen to what she thinks for an hour and half. You want to pass? Just tell her what you know she wants to hear and walk away with your A.
She always makes classes interesting. There is usually just one assignment due every week and they are typically really easy. I would recommend her hybrid class bc its really easy and cuts out some time in class. you only attend once a week! Really loved her! The student teacher was sort of annoying though...
This online class was hard but not because of the teacher. The subject was difficult however weekly assignments and reading were easy, but you don't have a lot of time for timed tests. Dasgupta was an amazing help, she got back to emails fast and if you try hard in the class it will be noticed. If you have to take SOC 2 take it online with her!
Light lectures, heavy tests, lots of textbook reading. The discussions and assignments and tests were easy as long as you read the material in your textbook. Professor DasGupta was a good teacher and a fair grader. I would recommend this class to anyone. You won't pass if you don't work for it.
Took her Social Problems course online and it was really straightforward. To do well on her exams (4) review the given study guides and do not rely on the Sage Publisher study materials. Her book is available on the reserve desk so don't break the bank (and refer to it for a good grade on the term paper). Plus: she responds promptly to emails :)
Do not take her if you like to share your opionion about social issues that disagree with her beliefs. My final paper disagreed with her and she purposeful graded it so my final grade was 5 points under an A . She provided no feedback. When I confronted her she accused me of not understanding the material, which I correctly stated in my paper.
Don't take this class if your not into hypocrisy, and flawed reasoning. Don't disagree with her in any way shape or form. Prepare to be shown the respect of a 6 year old.
She was very inclusive, understanding, flexible, and supportive during the October fires. I really enjoyed the material in class but was also glad she was supportive and was willing to help/work with her students during a difficult time. Thank you.
Took Soc2 online with her over Summer, literally the easiest class I've ever taken. 2 Forums a week, simple answer the question forums no need to interact with other students, 3 Exams, and a short 3-5 page final paper. Definitely no need to buy or rent the book as she provides AMAZING power point notes for each chapter. DEFINITELY recommend
Professor Dasgupta is warm, funny and caring. She is also really smart and her lectures are super fun. Class was on a sensitive topic, but she always welcomed different ideas. Take her class! I took it last year and it's one of the best at the JC.
The class itself, material, homework and exams arent hard. Participation and showing up to class matters. However, I had an A and she had graded all of assignments with full credit but my term paper she graded 1 point away from an A, which left my grade at an automatic B. When I asked her about it she was very vague. Beware she has her favorites!
Dasgupta's online classes are concise and assignments are never difficult. You can get through not reading a single page and excel in everything because the forums and tests are so straightforward, but if you engage in all the videos and reading it can be interesting. Take the class in-person or with another teacher if your serious about sociology.
Lectures in class are fun, a lot of group work in class. Tears arent super hard as long as you do the reading. Id take her again if I needed to take any soc classes.
If you read the material and want to succeed this class is a good fit. I took this class online you need to be self motivated or you wont do well. I would take this class again.
Dr. Dasgupta is really helpful and she loves sociology! She makes everything super interesting with the forum discussions and she provides organized notes for all the tests. The tests are hard though, so study!
I took Dasgupta's SOC1 in the big auditorium and I was scared it would feel like to much. But she is soooo funny that it makes class go by fast and she makes sociology relevant to my life. Phil the ta was also helpful when I asked him about my tests. Dasgupta is approachable too. Definitely take this class!!! One of the best.
This class was on race. Prof. D helped me learn so much! The lectures and documentaries were all really interesting. Best class at SRJC!
Interesting current topics. Great professor! Always has time to tlak and help.
Awesome class. Awesome teacher.
She is such a great teacher . She is always there if you need any help, and she is so caring . The syllabus is very clear and well detailed . Quizzes are easy as long as you read the book . Just take her class , you will not regret .
Dr. Dagupta's class is one of the best at the JC and this is the right time to study social problems. Her exams are hard but they are direct and you can do well if you have the book.
I took this class last year, but with all the stuff happening in the world its the best class I ever took. You will learn so much. Take this class!
Great class. Great teacher. Definitely take this class with this teacher.
I loved her summer course. The pace was around 2 chapters per week, and a test every twoish weeks. Only 1 term paper. She gave out extensions, assistance, proof reading, and extra support to her students. The class was super interesting and impactful to my life, and I would for sure take one of her courses again if I could.
I loved this class and am taking another with her next semester. I love how straightforward and organized her online class was-- you can see all the due dates to plan ahead, clear syllabus. Lots of reading but very interesting textbook she selected. Very interesting prompt for the final paper and I appreciated how she framed the assignments.
Easy homework, only 2 exams and a term paper.
I really enjoyed this class and learned a lot. I love how organized the class was and all the short chapter videos. Textbook is very important for tests. She is very understanding and gives great feedback. Best teacher so far.
Where to start? If you like critical thinking & questioning look elsewhere. If you take her view you will love this course, otherwise just brainwashing. If you want an A just agree, not worth fighting. Questioning will only hurt your goals. I thought college was to learn critical thinking & how to think, not what to think, boy was I naive.
Personally, I found DasGupa just alright, but I didn't learn much. Pretty simple class, every week there was a discussion post, but you didn't have to do a reply. Never really used the textbook. Final and midterm were just definitions, which she gives you. Two essays, grading wasn't the best (coming from an English major). Overall, an easy A.
She is a super nice professor. She gives good feedback on papers. She is very understanding if you communicate with her about any confusion or issues with turning in your work.
Fire professor. Super helpful and understanding, but structured enough to enforce homework and learning. She directs class conversation really well and allows for open discussion of relevant topics. 10/10
I was almost going to drop the class, but I tuckered through and ended up enjoying it. Just don't fall behind is my only suggestion as there are no other opportunities to make those points up (extra credit). She does offer late pass for 2 assignments before losing points.
Great professor and overall easy class. The week to week work is completely doable and easy. Theres a midterm essay and test, as well as a final. Just watch the lectures and take notes and you'll be good.
