Relatively new to teaching, actually a little shy. Very helpful with assignments.
BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOORING! her notes are totally not helpful at all.... really shy and afraid of the class!!
afrai of the class, means well but not it would be acceptable if she were new to teaching but she is not. she went form one extream to the next, by talking too fast to being too slow either way not informative, you don't learn anything form her
Rima attempts to be so removed from the theory that she accomplishes saying absolutely nothing. Assignments are poorly organised, as well as the overall structure of the class. Detailed syllabus, but zero useful content. She's not confident as a teacher.
She is the most helpful professor that I have ever encountered. Her tests and assignments are fair. Her lectures can be a bit dry, but she gets better and better with each class. Her class is especially interesting when we have discussions.
Rima Wilkes is the most dreadful instructor I've ever had. How people like her get hired is beyond me. She is totally inarticulate, rather uninformed, completely one-sided, and possesses no communication skills.
She's not a fan of public speaking, which makes people think she doesn't know her stuff, however, she really does. Just give her a chance and talk to her. Helpful when asking for help, offers to read papers before you hand them in, and likes discussion.

very good!! highly recommend! a def. must take
the workload is very light, especially for third year. there's no textbook so make sure you listen during the lectures. she's a pretty engaging speaker and she invites people to challenge her. overall a really good and innovative prof.
I love Rima Wilkes. She's so cool and she makes the most boring class seem interesting. She uses really effective teaching strategies and is really open-minded. Very light workoad and very exciting lectures.
Rima Wilkes is the owrst prof I've ever had. She's always nervous and awkward, and seems like she's seeing if she can get away with her crappy lectures. I DON'T understand what people see in her, she cant teach. I can assure you, if you take her class you'll regret it.
Rima is an awesome teacher. She is always willing to help you. Shes not a super easy marker but shes fair.
She's intelligent, but boring and i lost interest in the 1st class

SO HELPFUL! Very approachable prof and willing to help with whatever you need. This is the only prof that i've EVER gone to office hours. Lectures can sometimes be dry, but the material itself is pretty dry and methodical. Marks fair and open to peoples' opinions. Great prof!!
Great prof. Very concerned and interested in the course content, very approachable and knows her stuff. As a fellow student said, "[UBC's] better off keeping her."
Really helpful, make use of her office hours. The content of the course is hellishly boring though, but if you must take SOCI 380, take her section.
Professor Wilkes tries very hard to stimulate interest in subject matter. She is a fair marker and rewards hard work. 380 could have been incredibly dry without her. She prints out class notes beforehand, then hands them out, so paying attention in her lectures is much easier. I reccommend her for both classes I took with her.
Worst prof I ever had!So boring and lazy,so not interested in actually teaching her class. Tryes hard to seem firendly and helpful, but is not at all.All my friends hated her class too, not fair marker!Alert:Stay away!So regret taking her class!
Rima is unfortunatley one of the worst profs Ive had. She is a horrible public speaker, stuttering and muttering. She reads straight off of her overheads, so it is basically useless going to class. Her assignments require you doing 3-4 hrs of reading, then the questions don't really pertain to them! I will further avoid any class that she teaches.
horrible prof. stay away. takes the term "instructor" way too literally, because that is ALL she does...simply instructs but does not explain a single thing. she also tells you what something should be like AFTER THE FACT in instead of actually explaining for the beginning. just horrible.
Took 310 and 380 with Rima. Both are very dry classes. Rima is funny sometimes, nice, but a little judgemental. Wants everyone to be as 'into school' as she was. Wants to prepare you for grad school, so she will make you do a lot of work outside of class. Don't take these classes if you don't have to but she is not a bad teacher.
rhima is helpful, but she's not exactly the best prof. she tires to engage students. her classes are boring but her classes are not diffiuclt. she is a fair marker and there's a lot of independent work. but most of the comments made on this page (both good and bad) are ture.
Has high expectations, may come across as unhelpful but show/demonstrate interest, ie take the class seriously and she will help you. It's not only easy class, but if your a good student you should have no problem doing well, it's just not a gimme "A" is all. Fosters great class atmosphere. Overall enjoyed her class a lot!
Year long class: 5 mini-exams re: class readings (reasonable amount of reading assigned), first term paper, second term paper is a revised edition of your first term paper, 1 presentation about your paper, extra credit for getting a letter to the editor published. No midterms, no finals. She's funny, approachable, REALLY nice in office hours.
I would suggest that you never take a class with her. Is is possibly the worst professor I have ever had. Her teaching style is dreadful to say the least.
Absolutely zero clarity and very poor instruction. Went to see her in office hours (3 times!) - was rushed and unhelpful. She's a nice person I'm sure but for whatever reason, she is NOT into teaching. She's on sabatical for 2009 so you're safe. After that, seriously consider avoiding.
this woman is funny, engaging, and very human. on quizzes, write as much as you possibly can.
Great class, Rima is fun and a very fair marker - you do have to put in the effort if you want an A though. Highly recommend overall.
Dr. Wilkes covered interesting material in this class and was a fair marker. Discussion is interesting and going to class is useful for the exam, since her powerpoints are just outlines with very little content. I found she spoke too quickly for me to handwrite notes and I had to bring a computer to class.
Dr. Wilkes can be confusing and long-winded, but she is still intelligent and interesting. I liked that she had a backbone and actually made strong arguments to support her opinions, which was more engaging than just a neutral professor stance. She has a sense of humour and honesty that is refreshing. I would take another class with her again.
Although she can be slightly unclear at times, she is extremely kind, approachable, and helpful. Ask her questions if you're confused and she'll clarify anything. The course is interesting, she is a very fair marker and the final exam was very fair as well. One of the best required Sociology courses by far
Possibly the best prof I've had at UBC. She is absolutely hilarious and made what could have been a terrible class into one of my favourites. You definitely need to go to class but she does't give you too much work. If you're confused about something just ask and she will help you figure it out :)
Rima is a good prof. She shows concern for her students and their learning. There is a lot of information to study, however, if you attend lecture, you'll do well. Her research paper assignment taught me (in my 4th year) how to ACTUALLY conduct and write about research. Great class! Definitely recommend!
Rima has good intentions, I'm sure she cares for her students.. but her notes are so vague and disorganized. The TA actually marked harder than she would have on our assignments. She never refered to the textbook.
Great prof. Very passionate about what she teaches. Exam was very straight forward and no tricks. Paper was a Pleasure to write since lots of help and feedback offered. My fav prof so far at ubc
LOVE HER TAKE HER!!
She was one of my favourite profs this year because she cares about her stuff and is interested in talking to students in class. My only complaint is that she doesn't post her powerpoints ever, and it doesn't sound like she intends to change that. You'll have to write fast and in shorthand if you want notes from this class.
only one word to describe her as a teacher and as a person- lovely. just lovely. she is so passionate about her work and she really gets you to ascend to 3rd level academic research and writing in the field of sociology. i thoroughly enjoyed her class and did very well in it
Overall not a bad class, but i just wish that she would change the grading scheme around instead of a final worth 50% (and does not put up the slides). Overall the papers were good, kinda vague in the beginning but doable. Nice and funny personality as well!
Very good and interesting prof, willing to help anyone that needs her help.
Helpful teacher. This class will be easy for you if you have already taken SOCI 328 AND 217. Lab attendance is mandatory (at least initially). Pay attention in class, and you will do well. Helpful and passionate about survey methods!
Loved the professor. Midterms were straight-forward. Write as long as you can. The lectures are interesting, but slides are not that helpful.
Rima is one of the best professors I have ever had at UBC!! Rima knows her stuff, and her lectures are very interesting. Posts her power points, very helpful, and most importantly... she really got me thinking critically about Canadian society. Opened my eyes and learnt a lot. No textbook, exams are very fair.
She makes you think critically about Canadian Society. Makes a point to make it interesting! Fair grading for exams and very clear about what she wants. Just the right amount of exams too. No paper, no textbook.
Rima Wilkes is hands down the best professor I've had in Sociology so far. She made a course I wasn't too keen on taking absolutely enjoyable. She is the most fair grader you'll ever have, doesn't try to trick you during exams, extremely clear on what you're meant to revise for each exam and you'll have a guaranteed laugh in each lecture! Love her!
Rima is one of the best sociology professors at UBC! Her lectures are interesting and Informative. But you have to be able to write good quality papers to get a high grade.
Rima is an amazing prof, there were 3 midterms and a final. She encourages discussion, clear expectation of what she wants, made a compulsory class a lot of fun. No textbooks, just journal articles. One of the best profs for Sociology.
Best sociology prof at UBC. Wasn't a single class where I didn't laugh. Interesting lectures. Opportunity for bonus marks (up to 5% of total grade). Only test based (3 midterms: 15% each, 1 final: 55%). Don't take if not good test taker, but otherwise definitely recommend. Attending lectures mandatory: final exam is only on lectures. No textbook.
Rima is probably the best professor I've ever had. There wasn't one class where I didn't laugh and her lectures are really interesting on what could be a fairly boring subject. There are three midterms and a final, no textbook. She gives lots of opportunity for extra credit (up to 5%). If you're going to take a class it should be this one!!
The course is made up of 3 midterms worth 15% each (on readings) and one final worth 55% (only on lecture material). She gives the class an opportunity for an additional 5% extra credit as well handed in at the end of the semester. She is very passionate and keeps up with current events in Canadian society. She also has a fun sense of humour.
The course has 3 midterms (each 15%) and a final worth 55% - must attend lectures as the final exam is based solely on in-class lectures and the three midterms are based on the reading. The work-load is very manageable, I was able to read right before the tests and did pretty well. Rima is hilarious and very knowledgable!
Professor Wilkes is simply inspirational. Her class made Canadian society actually seem distinct and showed both Canada's flaws and strengths. Tests are not easy as they are long but they are fair if you study well. No assignments at all! Would totally recommend to others.
While I completely enjoyed her, the content sort of disappointed me. It was less about Canadian culture per se and more about minorities within Canada. We didn't learn about politics, etc. It was mainly about immigrants, aboriginals, women, the chinese, african accents etc. Which is great for intersectionality etc, but not very well rounded.
The class consisted of three midterms and a final- no paper. Her lectures were really interesting and she definitely has a sense of humor! But- you must keep up with the readings to get a good grade.
For Soci310, Rima is amazing. The TA though that marks the midterms (Nicole) is hard af. She wants every single word from the readings to be in your answer to give you a decent grade. Not fair at all. No final paper but 3 midterms that are crazy hard and you'll have to read all the hard readings lol. Goodluck!
The class is tough... but, Rima is funny and makes the material really interesting. Someone said that the TA (Nicole) is tough marker, but Rima said that she made how they were graded. Nicole was really helpful when I asked for help before a midterm (I got a way better mark when I did). If you put in the work, you can get a good mark.
Rima is laid back, not boring and straight to the point and offers bonus marks for attending outside of class events. There were no essays just 3 15% midterms based on articles and a 55% final based on lectures only. The readings are easy to read, however the tests on them were tough. Nicole was nice, gave pointers on what to write but still hard
Dr Wilkes is one of the best proffs in the department of Sociology. She is very passionate about what she teaches and really cares about her student's success. I had a really good experince taking her class. I recomment her classes.
Very good; she is a humble professor I've ever encountered. warm, witty and caring. The class topic itself very interesting, and furthermore Rima and her TA collaboration were good. Get ready to read LONG articles every class for a midterm. I don't take the final yet, but regardless of my grade, I will take her different class if possible.
Rima is one of the most passionate profs I have ever had. She genuinely cares and wants her students to do well. She is also great at making boring lecture material a lot more engaging and interesting...11/10 recommend.
I like RIma. She's a little old school and doesn't use canvas. She marks papers really fast. Participation counts. You have to write one big paper on whatever you like and correct it later on in the term. The only thing I didn't like about this class was the fact that the final exam was worth 45 percent. overall good class though!
Rima is a really caring prof. She cares a lot about Canadian sociology and has lots of experience teaching the course. Her lectures are decently interesting, and she does a good job of creating a safe, and non-judgemental environment to participate in. Participate as much as you can! You'll get the most out of the class that way.
Very encouraging and personal / friendly professor. Made me fall in love with sociology and see the importance of it!
Rima is an amazing professor you should definitely take her class! Her lectures are organized and thought-provoking. She makes you rethink about Canadian society and she has inspiring things to say about social justice. She is the ideal sociology professor. She is caring and funny, very understanding of time differences and different accommodations
Professor Wilkes is very caring and always puts her students first. The actual course wasn't as interesting but she made it as interesting as it can be. Overall, she's a good prof and her assignments weren't too hard. She does make you read a lot of academic journals though.
NEVER. EVER. THINK about taking SOCI310 with her. The exam was worth 40% and NO ONE FINISHED IT. NO ONE. It was 9 short answers and a 1000 word essay and we only have 2 and a half hours to do it. NO ONE FINISHED. Literally do not take this class with her please. Also she keeps telling us to call her?? like she sent us 5 emails asking us to call her
Rima is honestly one of the best profs ive had, she is understanding of our needs as student, as she truly CARES about us. we had weekly assignments that were worth 60% of our total grade that were on our readings and lectures. The final exam was not bad if you studied and paced yourself. Don't listen to people when they say shes a bad prof
Rima is one of the most caring and passionate profs Ive had. Her course work is informative and course work/ exams are very fair. The only flaw was an underestimation of how much time we would need on our exam, but thanks to her compassion she is working on compensation for this. She doesnt deserve any bad reviews based on this term exam.
Dr. Wilkes was hands down the best professor I've had at UBC. I thought the lectures and readings were really interesting and eye-opening. Downside was the final exam was way too long to be done within 2.5 hours but she listened to us and worked on adjusting the grade. Loved her and class.
She was an okay prof, I dont regret taking her but I wouldve preferred someone else. She teaches very clearly and half the lectures were posted online and the other half were mandatory to attend. Did like 10 readings the whole term that were definitely mandatory for the final. Easy final, not so easy paper
Dr. Wilkes is an experienced professor and has taught this class for 20 years. She seems very active in her own learning and her lectures and readings reflect this. She really knows her stuff and is down-to-earth enough to make you feel at ease while still providing a lot of digestible and important learnings. I hope to have her as a prof in future
I loved prof Wilkes! Her lectures are really fun and engaging. I like how she rewards constant effort and participation. She's a bit old school though and won't give anything about 90 for whatever reasons old-school teachers do this. I learned a great deal in this class and her exams are fairly easy and don't require too much preparation.
Her lectures were uninspiring and lacked depth. Often left lectures wondering what at all new I learned. If a prof uses blank slides, I expect for them to contribute more but instead she would say verbatim the 10 words on the slide then move on. You cant take notes because she says nothing meaningful. Shes a good person, but Im here to learn.
She is not an interesting lecturer whatsoever. We had 16 academic article summaries throughout the semester each one was 400 words for only 0.5% of our mark. I learned nothing from her however at least some of the readings she chose were decent. Her final paper format is a mess too. Definitely the worst prof I have had.
Meaningless lectures and entire course even midterms revolved around your reading comprehension of journal articles. Final essay prompt was a disaster and the course overall was relatively easy, but had so much forced group work and time consuming reading summaries twice a week. So much effort for so little gain - to only learn from the articles.
Lectures were discussion heavy, and participation was encouraged. We had to read an academic article (usually 20 pages) per class and write a 400 word reading summary (you get into the groove, and they are helpful for tests). Tough marker on papers, but I believe that was mostly the TA. Graded on multiple assignments instead of a giant one
Dr. Wilkes is a kind and caring professor. Shes quite cool and if you put in the work you will get a good grade. Showing up to class is the most important thing to keep up with lecture content. I highly recommend her course, you will walk way remembering a breadth of knowledge you never had previously
Workload was a reading summary for every class (couldve been weighed more considering the effort), an in-class group participation worksheet, 2 handwritten midterms (5 MC, 5 FITB, 2-3 written questions, I wish we only had written questions), and a final paper (hated how we had to pick topics/readings in groups only to write our own papers)
A variety of perspectives about Canada is welcomed/encouraged. Great readings, mid lectures. She's into sociological research and teaches us about it, so this course isn't just content but also skill. But if you're not into CDN society (just tryna get a requirement done) or research, or hate handwritten exams, Rafael Wainer may be an easier option
I live on a reserve and work in my band office in deep bloc quebequois QC- a got a 60 on the midterm based on Indigenous sovereignty and Quebec separatism. tests more on technicalities in details in assigned readings then actual understanding of the histories she teaches. my bad for not doing all the readings but jesus.
in-class group activities are marked for attendance, no textbook just 2 articles assigned each week. the readings may be long but they're relevant and helped me understand the corresponding lecture's content. kind, funny, and knowledgable professor. also great course design and flexible final paper option :) the exams were straightforward too!
Rima is knowledgeable and caring, and her lectures are very interesting. Took this class to fulfill the soci major requirement but ended up really enjoying the content and readings. 2 readings/week which were all tested in 2 midterms. She lets us choose our own topics for the final paper which made it more enjoyable to write. No final exam.
Good class and Rima tries her best to make somewhat dull content engaging. If you're from Canada this course is essentially just a social studies class from high school. 2 midterms, one final paper. No reason not to do well in this class
Dr. Rima is a great prof! She is very understanding and knowledgeable and is always ready to help her students. There are a lot of readings and the tests are a bit heavy but it's nothing that can't be handled. Do your readings well, seek help from her and you are good to go!
This was the UEFS. Animated lecturer, and you can tell she cares about student learning. She is super funny but a little bit of a hard ass when it comes to deadlines, 10% deduction if even a minute passed---costed me a letter grade in the end. As much as I loved her as a person, I do not think I would take a class with her due to teaching style.
