Whoa, all I can say is take a class in Portuguese before you have any classes with her. She's got a THICK accent and talks very fast. While very knowledgeable on the topics, she tends to be ahead of the readings. She also is unclear as to what you can expect on tests and exams. NOTE: She's a hard@$$ on the writing assignments.
RUN AWAY, very far away. her lectures are poorly done. she lectures a week ahead of the reading.and she gets this manical grin whenever your trying to answer something. also for no real reason she will use latin/foreign language words for things, then sometime later give the actual word. do not go near her, ever
Horrible class but easy grades. I have no idea whats going on in this class, but its easy to get atleast a B. In class essay, some kid just rewrote the question and got a C. I put down a bunch of b.s. and got an A-. But you should still stay away, I got stuck with this crappy class and it really aint worth taking even if she gave straight 100s.
This class was so frustrating, I have never had a class where a professor jumps around so much. Its so bad it makes you want to give up taking notes. Its impossible to follow her lectures. There aren't many grades but if you can b.s. well you'll probably be fine. But don't expect to know what will be on the tests, it's all luck.
Do not take this class unless you have no other option, even then I don't suggest taking it. Lectures are very scattered with no signposts which makes it very hard to take notes. Doesn't give a study guide for a ton of material, then puts 3 questions on the exam that are in a time span of 100 years. Seems unnecessarily difficult. Ugh.
the class is pretty easy especially if you do readings and take good notes. when it comes to helpfullness she's good, will meet w/ you on one of her non scehduled meeting days if you can't see her on any other one. very knowledgeable i liked the class n will take another.
Don't take this class unless you have serious time and energy to devote to it. It's do-able, but if you have other classes that are a priority don't bother.
Do not take this class. It is a complete waste of time. I had no idea what was going on the entire time. Horrible Teacher. Can hardly speak english and does not speak in sentences. The only words she writes on the board are in latin. Easy grades though. I did not learn one thing in this class but still some how managed to get an A.
I LOVED this class! its tough history to learn but the professor is a real expert. if you did not like it then you just don't get it, duh
This woman is so lovely and interesting. I like her alot. The material is dense, but thats just what you get when you take a nonspecific european history class. She really wants everyone to do well though.
She really knows her subject matter. No surprises. Tells you what is coming. She lets you take notes from the reading and initials the notes as the class progresses. You CAN use the notes on the tests. Very few people did. If you can read the answers on your own notes you'll get an A. Listen to her. She's good and easy if you do what she asks.
very good
Boring class but she's a good teacher. Writes everything in Latin on the board which makes it hard to take notes. She's a fair grader but she does take attendance. Reasonably easy test, and sometimes she accepts completely BS answers on the essays.
I will not give this teacher a bad rating because she is one of the nicest ladies I have ever met. I cant understand a thing she says and its impossible to take notes, but she seems real excited with her job. She is always happy and always smiling. She really knows her stuff, I just cant understand it.
Horrible
She is one of the nicest people i have known, interesting to talk to, and knows what she is talking bout. She does have an accent, but its not that bad (she speaks lots of languages). Textbook reading should def be done or you can fall behind. Easy grader, just make sure you do research when you are meant to. Again, really nice.
Really happy all of the time, but also very frustrating to listen to. Very specific lectures and material and even more specific grading. Very hard if you slack. If you need a gened avoid at any cost.
Somehow i passed with a B. nice lady, really cheerful. has a little accent. is a challenge to follow in lectures and decipher info relevant too the test. i was lost 95% of the time. do extra credit if u fail midterm (as i did), do well on writing assignments as well as your paper and final exam and with a little luck you'll pass. many ppl drop out
She is fantastic! Great instructor, incredibly knowledgable, very engaging, super friendly, and extremely passionate! She always has a smile on her face and most importantly she genuinely wants her students to learn as much as they can. She is from Lisbon, Portugal and her experiences abroad come in very handy. And besides, her accent is lovely!
Not a bad teacher. She knows her stuff at least. She has an accent, but nothing to hard to understand. Quizzes are easy, theyre either pass of fail at 50% and the tests are not too long. Gives you a topic to research to scare you, but you don't do a whole lot with it. She's very nice and the class isn't too bad if you enjoy a bit of history.
completely useless teacher. she taught nothing, and i learned nothing. mid-term and final exam are impossible to study for, and i never seemed to earn higher than a B on any of the essays or quizzes that i studied hard for. DO NOT take this class, avoid it all costs!
research topic: know something about it when the lecture about it comes around she'll ask u 1 or 2 ?'s. KNOW YOUR CHRONOLOGIES. a relatively hard research paper is assigned, but she practically gives you the ?'s for the final. You must however read the reading assignments 2 know what the heck shes talking about. her accent slowed my comprehension.
Her lectures are a little too detailed for a pretty broad 100 level course. She somehow expects that you've memorized the textbook after weekly readings and is a little hard to follow. EXTREMELY knowledgeable, although possibly not cut out for teaching. Also, really cute and perpetually excited, often does not even notice that the class is asleep.
Really enthusiastic about history, but her class is way too much work just for some lousy gen ed credit. YOU MUST READ & come to class (attendance & participation are graded). Quizzes, research project, 1 huge paper, a few writing assignments, final, & midterm. Nice lady, but she does not play games when it comes to grading.
Workload may be a bit overwhelming for freshman but shouldn't be a problem for juniors/seniors. A fun unique approach to a history course by assigning each student a topic to specialize in throughout the semester. Unfortunately i didn't like her lecture style therefore most lectures were really boring
her accent is hard to understand at first but its easy to get used to. the assignments are straight forward, for the final paper use tons of outside sources. gives you past midterms and finals to study from, doesn't really emphasize main points all that well so its up to you to decide what is important, lectures till the end.
I wouldnt exactly recommend this class. The exams are pretty detailed and require a lot of studying. Lecture can get pretty boring and there's too much work for a 100 level class.
Professor Costa-Gomes is extremely intelligent, but may be too smart to teach. She makes you do so much reading and expects you to know it. It is way too hard for a 100 level class. I'd advise not taking this professor at all. She is a nice woman but isnt cut out to teach a Gen Ed.
Rita is kind of crazy. Her lecture style isnt easy to follow. There are two tests and a big paper and a few small writings. Shes a hard grader even if you have a good amount of info. Not very helpful. Would NOT recommend. The one class that really stressed me out first semester.
Wow she's hot! The class is boring and hard to follow with out the text. Her accent can make things difficult as well. The paper is kinda tough and you have to work on it thoughout the semester to do it right. The tests are hard. I recommend avoiding her if you can.
She is extremely intelligent and knows a lot about the subject. Her lectures are a little hard to follow because they tend to be all over the place. Very nice lady. The paper is kind of annoying, but if you work on it throughout the semester like you're supposed to you will be fine.
DO NOT take this class if you want to take a survey gen-ed course. Take this class if you love history in an abstract and independent way, the course has good intentions, but is a little convoluted and pretentious. No offense to people who have an accent, but honestly...it's hard to understand her. She always goes off topic and holds the class late
Too much expectations. Many assignments very untypical and doesn't make sense such as writing 2000 word research paper about an image rather than history itself, and writing paragraphs about a map. Expects wide range, deep memorization, such as geography. Most of the notes are expected to be self-written. Expects everything to be done on one's own.
Lectures are about really tedious aspects of the general topic. She expects way too much from a low level course. Don't sit in the front cause she'll get in your face. I really did like how interested and knowledgeable she way though. Paper was based on an image and that was really dumb. I like her but didn't like the stupid stuff we did in class.
Uhm, take this class if you love teachers who do not makes sense and make you do presentations for no grade. She is ridiculously all over place when she lectures, only writes latin words on the board, and is very abstract. Nicest lady I've met, but completely impossible teacher.
supposed to be hist 102. teaches like 352. this prof seems to have the expectation that everyone in class is a history major therefore, great for history majors if your not a hist major she doesnt care. grades memorization of geography. does not help does not give study guides. always keeps class 5-8min late looks down on you if your not interested
A fascinating, knowledgeable professor who is passionate about her subject matter. However, she has a hard time articulating her wisdom in a way that makes sense to students. She does not provide the tools with which to succeed on tests (i.e. asks in-depth essay questions for which we are unprepared). Would be a great upper-level prof. but not 100.
A whole lot of talking you can barely understand, lectures that have nothing to do with tests. Her eyeballs will pop out when she asks you a question, I find myself every class watching the clock praying it will end. The worst class I have ever taken, and I have been a full time college student for 3 years.
Dr. Costa-Gomes is a passionate professor who invests her time in every students' academic development. She speaks beautifully, with extreme focus and introspection. She grades fair and expects her students to learn on their own, even as she always initiates the dialogue. Brilliant professor!
Thoroughly awful. Completely nonsensical. Neither her lectures nor the book teach any history, no guidelines for assignments, cannot ask an answerable question in a first-year survey course, etc...
I'm a history major and find it really hard to pay attention in this class! Her lectures are boring, even though shes's really enthusiastic about history. There are two easy map quizzes, but the big tests are hard. Lectures don't really relate to the textbook, and final essay has no definite guidelines and is hard to write.
This class is not an easy gen ed. This class is for your experienced history student. I would try and take this class with another teacher is possible. She's not impossible but other history teachers are a lot easier. Attendance is mandatory and she makes everyone use name tags. She will also call you out in class so be prepared with answers.
She has an accent that can distract from some of her lectures, but overall she is very knowledgable and very passionate instructor. She primarily grades off the Final, Midterm and quizzes (together they were 90% of the final grade). She provides study guides, but still, if you aren't a strong test taker you may want to skip this class
Although she really knows her stuff, the class overall is very unclear. In the class, we really had no idea what was going on for a good two months, and then all of a sudden we had to present a thesis on a paper to the whole class. She isn't very understanding. My computer got a virus once, and she still expected me to have the paper the next class
TSEM- Facing the Inquisitor. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. The topic is extremely boring and although she's passionate about her work you can't help but to get annoyed with her eagerness towards this boring subject. Attendance is mandatory, 15 page paper at the end, powerpoint presentations. Curved my grade a bit at the end.
It's TSEM so don't expect fun & games, it's work. But there isn't any sort of nightly homework, the class is dedicated entirely towards the goal of producing the term paper. Really the only assignments are your initial presentation, bibliography, outline, rough draft, and paper. She's awesome though, and every class is a discussion that will help.
Great profesor, very detailed with a plethora of Portuguese history knowledge. Classes are discussion based, if you participate it makes the HW easier. All HW is completed after a class discussion. Readings are long but not boring. Exams are straight forward essay questions, if you pay attention in class you will do great
My biggest issue with professor Costa-Gomes is that she doesn't provide a study guide for the midterm exam. Its a 100 level class so it should be fairly easy. Also, she assigns you map quizzes as if this were a geography class. If I could take another professor then I would.
My biggest issue as someone who is an education major is that there is no structure to her lectures. I feel that after taking her class and not being confident in European history to begin with, her 100 level course was more a 300 level course. I really would not recommend her as a professor to anyone.
Gives extremely long readings. DOES NOT GIVE CLEAR INSTRUCTIONS PERTAINING TO MEDIEVAL BALTIMORE PROJECT. Very confusing when giving out grades. Will lower your grade even after giving you a specific grade on the group project and was told that she always does this. Very unfair and not worth your money. I advise you to not take her class.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. This professor is rather unfair in everything that she does. She's very passionate about the subject but she does not take criticism well. She forgot to place an order for books at the beginning of the semester and just kept claiming g that she did. Grades harshly even on very easy assignments which is arbitrary.
The class is supposedly entirely focused around writing the paper, but a lot of the class time is spent discussing historical subject matter that does not pertain to most students' essay topics. It is also unclear what assignments are due for credit and which are optional. Most of the required books and reading have been of no help to me.
Worst professor on campus. Entirely too challenging for a TSEM class. Assigns a ridiculously long 15 page paper about the Inquisition and provides no help. Definitely do not miss class, even if you are attending a funeral for a friend because she will not care at all, even if you have a note. Terrible, terrible professor.
Extensive amount of reading for homework after every lecture, gives unclear instructions about assignments, consistently does not reply to emails, requires the textbooks be brought to every class, has pop reading quizzes throughout the semester that quiz you on minute details from the text.
I am a history major, and early European history is my favorite subject in all of school, and yet she made this class almost impossible to enjoy! I could never bring myself to pay attention!
She's unclear about assignments. The syllabus had many mistakes about when assignments were due and thats what we were expected to rely on. So due dates would change all the time and mess everyone up. Theres lots of reading assigned but never any quizzes or uses for it except for your final paper. You're allowed three absences but that's not enough
I am a graduating senior and this is by far the hardest class I have taken, to the point that I was concerned I would even pass it (and graduate). Tests are based heavily on the lectures, reading the text won't help much. She keeps the class 5-10 minutes after it is over every single day (don't take a class that's across campus right after).
Seriously. This class is extremely difficult. Extensive amounts of research.
By far the worst professor I've ever had and worst class I've ever taken. She is rude and does not act very professionally when talking to students when they ask questions. The lectures have no real structure to them and she does not make study guides. Be ready to work and focus on a paper with little to no value on the actual purpose of the class.
Bottom line is this, it is absolutely unclear what she wants from you. She lectures on and on and on but you zone out within the first five minutes and time stands still. Her Medieval Baltimore project seems fun at first but the draft is due today and my class literally has no idea what we are doing and she is no help. Avoid her class.
She is extremely unhelpful. We as a class are so genuinely confused on what we have to do in her class. We have asked for help, we have asked for clarification and she only makes us more confused and unsure of what we are supposed to do. She makes the Medieval City boring. I did not know it was possible to make that content boring. AVOID!!!!!!
This class is offered as a core but she seems to assume every student is a history major. The Medieval Baltimore project is extremely unclear, and multiple groups have no idea what they are doing. She doesn't give written feedback on pop quizzes, so it is hard to understand exactly what she wants. She is passionate about the subject, however.
Rita Costa Gomes was a very active student-communist leader in the 1970/1980s in Lisbon Her organisation, UEC, publicly humiliated highly qualified teachers and her own fellow colleagues who were not communist. She was extremely orthodox, intolerant, cruel and arrogant. Her communist membership helped her a lot with her academic career.
She is by far the worst professor I have ever had. The class seems endless as all she does is lecture non stop. During our break we all discuss how nobody has a clue what is happening. She randomly calls on people because nobody wants to talk. For the Medieval Baltimore project, she didn't give us a rubric or any details of what she was looking for
Costa-Gomes was by far the hardest teacher I have EVER had. She would lecture on and on which is fine, but only if it makes sense. Her lectures were never clear and concise and she doesn't give a clear study guide for the midterm and final. She taught this class as an upper level, despite it being a lower level class. Steer clear of her.
Professor is very knowledgeable and passionate about the course material, however she is not very good at lecturing/teaching the material to a class. Her lectures drag on and don't really make sense. Her quizzes are just as confusing and are always on very obscure parts of the reading that one would normally look over to retain the bigger picture.
God help your GPA if you take her.
The professor's interactions with the students suck. Emails were not responded to and when you ask a question you either got a blank stare and ignored in some cases. the main project makes no sense w/zero guidelines and when you ask what she wants it gets more confusing because I don't think she even knows. I'd say more but I ran out of characters.
Dr. Costa-Gomes is very knowledgeable but she should not be teaching. Medieval Baltimore project is irrelevant to the course, the midterm date wasnt on the syllabus, no study guide, lectures went on forever and you didnt walk away with much. AVOID AVOID AVOID
I am a history major, and this professor made me want to forget about European history in general. Readings never matched what is actually discussed in class. Exams have no study guides because she says "the book is your study guide". An absurd amount of material that only she knows, all packed into a 100 level course. Do NOT take unless necessary
DO NOT TAKE HER PLEASE. I BEG. I can go on and on about how bad she was as a professor. lecture heavy, she doesnt use blackboard so you wont know your grade and very few assignments.
I had her my freshman year for TSEM and she was awful. Nothing made sense, she was rude to students, and literally made me cry because she accused me of trying to get out of attendance when I forgot my nametag. Awful.
I had her for TSEM first semester of freshman year and this woman scarred me for the rest of college. None of the due dates on the syllabus were accurate, the grading criteria was unclear for every assignment, a ridiculous amount of reading was assigned for the class, and she was overall kind of rude to the students. Bad professor, 0/10
She was overall an okay professor. Her lectures were extremely boring and it was hard to keep up but if you do the readings and try to focus through it you will do well in the class. I didn't try as hard as i could have and ended up with a B.
She will change assignments last minute on you. Do not take her class. She is unclear, boring lecturer, and overall would not take again.
Pretty simple class. Tended to be heavier on lectures yet they're not bad at all. Very few assignments and an easy grader! If you read the textbook and pay attention for the most part you'll pass with flying colors. I def was nervous to take her after seeing these reviews but it must have been for another course.
She means well but is a terrible professor. She talks all class and isn't a whole lot of help, she assigns a lot of work and if you miss one thing you're going to be behind.
Professor Gomes is kind, although get ready to read! She grades roughly and spends lectures talking about topics that have nothing to do with the 15-page paper. The day that the paper was due she spent time discussing things that would have been useful a week prior.
Professor Costa Gomes is a great person and a very caring teacher, but when it comes to lectures, it is hard to get a grasp of what is going on. She grades pretty easily and welcomes corrections. Overall, a good teacher but heavy on assignments and lectures.
i took this professor for my tsem class and it was the most confusing course and it was so stressful. she def does care for her students and wants to see you succeed but it was just such a difficult topic and i struggled with making sure i was following rubrics well enough to get the good grade
She obviously means well and is a nice person but she misses when it comes to understanding that freshman year students aren't able to write a 15 page paper by the end of the semester while also dumping 5 other medium to large-sized writing assignments on them throughout. I would definitely recommend swapping your class for a different professor.
She is a kind woman and really wants you to succeed, but her lectures are hard to follow and she doesn't really follow her syllabus. This was especially hard at the start of the semester. She gives good feedback though and will make sure to help if a student is seriously falling behind.
RCG is a really smart professor, however she expects a lot from her students for a 100 level course. She grades her assignments very harshly and there aren't many assignments so it can mess up your grade easily. She also requires a 2000 word research paper for her class. While I learned a lot, I would never want to take a class with her again.
While a very nice woman her class offers little to be enjoyed. She treats her 100 level course as if it's a 300 level course. She is late to class everyday and will keep you past the timeframe of the classroom. Everyone in my entire class feels the same way, we literally talk about it while were waiting for her to show up. Class is brutally boring.
This class will be extremely difficult if you are a freshman. Lectures are horrible and she talks about anything, but history, doesn't go over the chapters we were supposed to read.
She gets distracted easily/rambles often. When asking for private clarification she will talk at full volume so everyone can be a part of your private conversation so if you have anxiety I wouldn't recommend taking her class. If you have to leave class early even if it's an emergency she will make comments about deducting points.
This class was so hard to stay awake in. She can lecture for SO long and never needs a break (fully 2.5 hours barely taking a breath). She is extremely difficult to access outside of class and does not respond to emails, does not give much direction for assignments. The course itself was fun but going to class was a nightmare.
