She was very inspiring and amiable! the sociology class i took with her actually woke me up at 10 am whereas the soc class i had prior to her put me to sleep. she inspired class discussion and used a lot of non text materials, such as movies. she is easy to contact and very flexible. HIGHLY RECOMEND HER :)
Rita was a very inspiring prof, and she made you care about the subject. In class, we watched many videos, clips, and discussed relevant current events. My only con is that the textbook we used was extremely Marxist, and didn't present any alternate views.

Rita was a wonderful prof. She truly cared about her students, and their ability to learn from her class. She would go out of her way to help us understand a concept & I truly gained a lot from this class. You need to study, but overall she was a very fair marker.
The best prof I have had yet. So caring and involved. She goes above and beyond in everything she does. If you have a class with this prof, count youself lucky and show her the respect she deserves!
Rita was AMAZING. I would love to take another class from her. She was clear in what she expected from her students. There were a few papers, but overall the course load wasn't that heavy. She is one of the nicest ladies I have ever met and she truly does want her students to succeed. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
One of my favourite profs. She is a real pleasure to learn from.
very easy.
Great teacher! and a fairly easy class. I found she read right off the slides so attendance is not always necessary but we did watch a fair amount of videos.
Rita was an awesome prof! By far my favourite this semester. She was so funny and kept you engaged during lecture. The videos that you watch in class are interesting. She is extremely helpful and wants you to do well.
Interesting prof, she talks about herself a lot but it is relevant to what we are learning. I found she marks VERY easy on any essay assignments. Her M/C questions on tests are usually all applied and she likes using D. All of the above E. None of the above F. A and C only... so be prepared for that. Great prof, really enjoyed her class
Rita is a fantastic person and takes a lot of personal interest in her students' lives, she even knows most of them by name. Very approachable and easy to talk to. Overall great quality.
Very approachable and knowledgeable, though her multiple choice questions for her midterms/final are sometimes difficult to answer because it's not always clear exactly WHAT she's asking.
Rita was not the prof I thought I had in mind. I took this class because I thought it'd be easy but it was not. Even if you go to class, read the book, study you still get mediocre results. She is not clear on anything. She often uses what students say in class as the basis for a lot of the questions she puts on exams, which is not professional.
Hamoline was willing to help any student who needed help. Her tests were simple, but you MUST have read the textbooks and attend class, as some of the questions were based on class discussion.
She is the BEST professor at U of S!!! very clear, gives clear instructions and wants her students to do well! I highly recommend Dr. Hamoline. I enjoyed going to her class, she is funny and cares about the quality of learning not that quantity.
Pretty good prof! Drew upon personal experience to make concepts relatable and interesting and used a lot of media and documentaries to support concepts. I really enjoyed her class and Rita was very interested in her students success. Very approachable and fair.
Rita was one of the best prof's I have had in my 3 years of university. It was her first time teaching this course, so it was a bit disorganized, but she made up for her lack of organization in so many other ways. She is by far the most caring teacher i have ever had, and she really wants every one of her students to succeed. Highly recommend.
I find that she often gets way off topic and the class as a whole moves at a slow pace. Judging by the mass emails I have been receiving from my fellow classmates, I am not the only one who feels lost because she does a lot of talking and not much explaining. Bonus: she tells a lot of funny stories and is a delightfully quirky prof.
Rita is a little all over the map. Her class is off topic often and her anecdotes are usually unhelpful. She takes three classes to go over every seven slides, but the slides usually only contain textbook definitions so it's redundant.
I think Rita Hamoline would be better in a smaller class setting, so if given the choice, try to get into a smaller class with her. The class discussions are great but I found her explanation of the actual class material was boring and hard to stay focused. Read the textbook and notes thoroughly.
Absolutely love Rita! Most of the class was taught through group discussion, which got a bit long after a while. We only made it through half of what was listed in the syllabus. Let the class make a lot of decisions regarding the term project and exams. I found the exams fairly easy, but lots of people did poorly on the midterm.
Her lectures are all over the place. Instructions and explanations are very unclear. However, if you have a question or don't understand something, she will absolutely go over it again for you, but she will go on and on with no real point like usual. She always ended class early if she wasn't in the middle of one of her rants.
As time went on the class became more about teaching yourself. On multiple occasions she cancelled class, even part way through a lecture because she was in a bad mood. She generally didn't get anyone to fill in when she cancelled so we had to learn that material on our own. Her paper is was easy though and generally good class discussion.
I found Rita's lectures to move slow, and jump all over the place. She also seemed to repeat many examples over again. The tests were pretty easy, most of the questions seemed to be based on definitions and stats, few on class discussion. Would not take a class from her again.
Rita is an awesome prof! I really enjoyed her lectures.
Rita hopes students know everything from the textbooks, which is really tough.
Rita is not a very goof prof, she is very scatter brained and doesn't explain topics clearly at all. Lectures are mostly of her repeating the same examples over and over. The midterm was unfair since there were many questions on topics we hadn't learned, there really was no way to prepare for it. You will have to learn everything yourself!
Lectures can be a bit dry, but in general I ended up really liking Rita. She only assigned one paper for our class, and the midterm and final were both multiple choice. She tests pretty evenly on lecture and textbook content. Expect exam questions about videos watched and discussions held in class. Read the textbook carefully.
It's tough to describe my love/hate relationship with Rita Hamoline. Absolutely amazingly lovely woman, but her lectures are a bit of a mess. Sometimes if you look at her slides, they are incoherent unless she explains them to you. When we start a new class, she also goes sometimes 1-4 slides back from where we finished last class. Very infuriating
Loved having her as a prof!! Made my semester way more fun having her class. Her lectures can go off tangents at times depending on how the class discussion takes off.. but her midterm and final were evenly balanced from the text & powerpoint. Gives specific details on what to expect on the midterm/final. (:
Rita was by far the best prof I had this term. The course material was really interesting, and as long as you read the text or critically analyze the issues you will do really well. She has relatively clear expectations and allows for class input on exam format. Would take again.
Rita is a fantastic professor, one thing I noticed and loved! Was her demand for attention and respect in class. Not in a bad way! Class discussions are highly encouraged, but if students are having personal convos she asks them to do it elsewhere. I really wish more professors would do the same.
I have mixed feelings about Hamoline. She explains concepts clearly but drags on too long on certain topics sometimes. This leaves her rushing through the last bits of information.
Rita is a great prof! I know her lectures are organized and she spends so much time on one slide, but honestly the slides are literally off the text. However, what made me love her is the way she cares about her students. She gives hints on questions on the exam and she's just a lovely, approachable lady. Tests are fair but they can be very tricky!
My lowest mark throughout the year because she screwed our whole class over in the first midterm. She marked the test wrong on 4 questions and a few kids called her out while we were going through the test. She also put on chapter 4 when we all thought it was only chapters 1-3 so none of us read that chapter. overall interesting class-not good prof
Rita treats students as equals; listened to feedback, admitted to errors on midterm, was open to discussion to correct errors. She genuinely wanted the class to succeed so she let us vote on what type of midterm we would prefer to help improve our marks. Ch4 had repetitive material as explained in class before exam. Only graded on material covered.
She can be a little disorganized at times but knows her stuff. Class was not mandatory but I recommend it because she explains concept well and give lots of hints for midterms and the final.
I love Rita! She is such an amazing person who really tries to give all of her students the best possible chance to succeed. She gives the class an option to choose how the midterm and final will be structured. There is quite a bit of reading, but a lot of them are quite interesting and easy to read. Fair grader! Would take another class from her!
Rita was a caring prof who wanted you to succeed. Her lectures, while not mandatory, would give a good indication for what to focus on for exams. She always added her own stories into an otherwise fairly generic class, making it entertaining and fun. The textbook was not mandatory, but were helpful in supplementing her lectures.
She will talk about the same thing for a whole week of classes at times and gets distracted from her topic fairly easily at times. She encourages students to contact her for help and gives you lots of ways to contact her, she says your questions to her will be confidential but often calls students out in class asking who emailed her the question
Super funny.
Rita is adorable, I love her lectures! Though she's really funny and personable, she also knows what she's talking about and drops hints about her exams.
Rita is so passionate about what she teaches which makes her such a great proff. I would defiantly want her to be my proff again. She takes her time on the chapters and makes sure she gets each concept understood clearly and doesn't rush through everything. She would rather have us understand less material, than not understand more material.
Rita really cares about her students and wants everyone to do well in the class. She includes personal and current-event anecdotes, which are both helpful and funny. It was also an easy and light class- there were two short midterms to write and that's about it. Great prof, I signed up for another class with her next semester based on this one.
loved Rita. by far best teacher i've had
Some people on this site say Rita is boring, but she is truly a remarkable, kind, and caring woman. She speaks her honest opinion about topics, and tries her best to make her lectures informational and entertaining. Sociology is not my favorite topic, but I respected her as a person because she really cares about her students. Would recommend!
I don't think she knows what being objective is. Likes to speak about her life and opinions like students give a damn. Easy A, but hard to stand her. You have to read the book and study on your own. Doesn't teach much.
She seems to be a very kind and caring woman, but I don't think she teaches very well. Twenty-minute tangents are common in her class and they rarely have a clear point. I found that most of what she said seem like more common sense than something I need to learn.
Rita seems like she's a nice person, but she shouldn't be teaching, she'll often go off on random tangents for 10 minutes. The thing that frustrated me the most is that she made very un-educated statements, it's fine to have your own opinion, but hers seemed to be based on assumptions usually without having any proper backing.
Rita is an amazing Prof. Rita is the one that got me interested in Sociology. She taught me Soc 112 and now 211. She is honest and expects her students to make an effort. Rita is always available if you have questions. Rita encourages her students to challenge themselves and is willing to help navigate through the learning curve.
Rita was one of my favourite professors and I am lucky to have had her in my first year! Her lectures DO pertain to what she is teaching and she makes everything relatable. An incredibly kind and caring woman. People who say she is "uneducated" need to check themselves, this woman has credentials to teach, you probably don't. Keep it up, Rita!!
I really enjoyed Rita's class. She is super passionate and it shows in her lectures. She wants us to be informed and have conversation about things. She's not afraid to say things that will evoke student conversation. Go to class and participate in class and you'll be fine
Rita is a kind woman and I respect her for that. However, as a prof, she can be rather disorganized - saying to not focus on certain things in lecture and then having multiple questions showing up on the exams. Her assignment she gives was again unclear as she said one thing in class and then I lost marks for doing just that when the TA marked it.
Rita is a unique professor. She has a passion for the subject and can be interesting. That being said, I found that she went of topic often and I ended up leaving everyday not taking anything helpful from the content. I bought the textbook that had everything in it so I didn't need to attend lectures. The final was only 3 chapters which was easy!
I love Rita! I've had her for a few classes now and each class is amazing! Read the textbook as her exams are often on the text. She's very caring and gives you credit for the effort you put in. 100% recommend her.
Rita is a really kind and caring woman! If you have any questions or need help with anything at all, she is always there to give a helping hand. Her exams are super easy, as long as you prepare yourself for them. It is not necessary to attend her lectures, but it is necessary to thoroughly read her lectures. If you put in effort, you will be fine.
Rita is one of the best profs I have had the pleasure of learning from over the past 4 years. I have taken 3 classes from her and have learned something new each time. Not only does she teach the curriculum, she also encourages and inspires her students. Rita is a large part of why I became passionate about Sociology.
Gave a lot of examples which made it easier to connect terms together.
Very passionate about sociology.
Rita was a nice and funny prof. Her exams were directly based on the textbook, so her lectures were not mandatory to attend. However, my term paper was graded with only checkmarks and had very little specific feedback.
Rita is very funny, she cares about her students, and she knows her stuff. That being said, I would not take another class with her, and here's why: she moves at a snails pace, she goes on tangents often, and she gives poor feedback on the few things she assigns - making improving difficult. She's a nice lady, but I didn't enjoy being her student.
Rita goes off on many tangents, and lots of what she says does not relate to the material, but mostly about her family. Also, she posts full slides on PAWS, so attendance to class is not necessary.
Rita is an awesome prof, and an even better woman. Her lectures are usually interesting and likes to hear feedback, as she genuinely cares for her students. If you show up to lectures in her 100 level classes, then you don't really need to bother buying the textbook. Exams can be tricky, but overall great classes.
Terrible lectures very slow moving and boring. She likes to talk about herself a lot and get away from course material. Oh ya and she also gives misleading final exam information on what it will cover.
All of the information you need to know is on the slides (which she posts on blackboard). The slides were clear and Rita likes to use her family as examples to theories. The only problem is that Rita teaches very slowly and you're lucky if she gets through 2 slides per lecture.
Rita is a kind lady but her lectures are off topic majority of the time. I found it more efficient to not go to class and just read over the slideshows on my own because she goes through about 5 slides every class and it really drags on. Her exams weren't bad, but the paper had unclear expectations and simply gave a mark back with no feedback
Very kind engaging, enthusiastic, and fun to listen to. She makes lectures more interesting by providing good examples and elaborating on the content. You don't need to read the text to pass her class. Just show up and take notes and you'll be fine. She is also a fun person to talk to after class, and very understanding and flexible.
Ms. Hamoline is a great and energetic teacher who uses tons of examples to explain the course martial. She is open to discussion during class and doesn't rush the martial. She belies in quality over quantity when it comes to the class.
Rita is an awesome professor. She cares about her students so much and it shows. She's not a push over but she gives you a fair chance to pass her class. Attendence is more important than reading the text because although some midterms questions came straight from the text the majority were about examples she talks about in class. LOVE HER SO MUCH
Rita is an awesome prof! I would definitely recommend taking a class with her! she cares about her students which is refreshing. Great class.
Funny and blunt.
no need to attend the classes, just memorize every sentence from the given chapters. she just copy-pasted the multiple-choice questions from the book in the exams. it's over 30 pages per chapter, 1% for just 2 MCQ questions from the total grade. if you have great memorizing skills go for it.
Rita is a very great lecturer. Very interesting stuff presented by her if you haven't been in sociology before. Awesome person all around ! Nothing but good vibes from her.
Rita is a really awesome prof who is really good at lectures! She is really engaging and keeps you very interested the entire class! I personally love how she is blunt and says whats on her mind and gives her opinion and if you dont agree or have something to add on to what she says, she is always happy to hear your point of view! 9/10 prof!
Rita creates super interesting lectures, and isn't afraid to tell it like it is. The discussions in class always relate to controversial topics that help in understanding the theories and content. 2 multiple choice midterms and a final, all pretty fair if you go to class regularly
I've had Rita for Soc 111 and 112. The skills I learned in her class helped me do better in all my classes. Show up to class, ask if you have questions and read or at least skim through the textbook. She uses lots of examples in class which help with remembering the material. She's a very kind lady, so don't hesitate to ask if you need help!
best prof ive had. super caring and sweet. you dont really need to go to class exceptfor a few examples. Just read the textbook. her tests were super straight foward (from textbook).she gvives everyone a fair chance. if you can take anyone, take her.
Rita is a great person but a decent professor. She is nice, easy to get along with and pretty understanding, but her lectures are dry and she just reads from the powerpoint. You can easily just go over the powerpoint and never attend her classes. She loses focus a lot and has a hard time getting back on topic, but overall a decent and easy prof.
the notes are all you need
Rita is an amazing professor. I took both intro SOCs with her, as well as SOC 211. She appreciates participation, she is respectful other views and asks tough questions to get you thinking. She is a very caring woman, and easy to talk to. Her tests can be tough, but she is a fair grader.
Rita gives 4 tests worth 15% each and a final worth 40%. she will not mark any question over a 4/5, which is unfortunate when each test is made of 3 questions worth 5 marks each. it is quite literally impossible to get over an 80 in this class, and thats only if you do manage to get full marks on every single question. No feedback given either.
Had Rita for soc112 this semester online. Gives 4 quizzes worth 10% each. No marking rubric, no feedback/comments that are helpful(sometimes none at all), almost never emails class, term paper worth 30% and gave out the assignment description like a week before lol.... not a fan AT ALL. Would never recommend anyone to take her class.
Very unreliable. Cancels lectures last second and never sends out any emails about anything. Gives very poor feedback on quizzes, no grading rubric, expectations are also very unclear. Changed the outlining of syllabus multiple times. wouldn't take the class again.
Ver interesting prof and super forgiving and understanding. Final was extremely difficult though
Rita is very kind and funny and made our online lectures as interesting as they could be given the circumstances. There were hardly any surprises on the final. One complaint I do have is that she did not give us any feedback on our four quizzes that were all short answer questions, so it was hard to know what my mark was based off of.
I enjoyed Rita as she really cared for her students. There was not too much work to do for this class which was nice. One complaint that I have is that she gave no feedback for quizzes so I had no idea why I received any of the marks that I had. The quizzes were only out of 15 marks so it was also difficult to achieve higher marks.
I don't know who the people giving these great rating had as a professor because Rita was the rudest most condescending professor I have ever had the displeasure of taking a course from. Her grading criteria is super vague and she responds to questions really unprofessionally. Definitely not someone I would describe as caring and compassionate.
She was the worst professor in my first year experience. She made remote learning so much harder. She did not give me a single feedback. I don't even think she read my assignments or the term paper. Completely random marks and even after emailing her for feedback on my first ever term paper she did not care to answer. I DO NOT RECOMMEND HER.
Horrible professor. Learned the whole material by myself. When I reached out to her to ask questions she talked to me for 3 minutes, answered non of my questions and told me she had to go. I sent her 3 emails during the term and she never answered any of them. She is the worst prof I have had so far.
She wasn't horrible but her lectures are so boring. She goes into detail with every single little thing and it doesn't even help with the 3 timed assignments (quizzes). Says that she gives hints for the assignments but when it is time to write it, the questions are COMPLETELY different. Replies to emails that she likes but leaves the others on read
Rita is the most caring professors I have had yet. Having her for online classes was unfortunate because I would have loved to meet her in person. She seemed to struggle with the technological aspects of teaching, but I thought she did wonderfully. She is honest, intelligent, and loves her area of study - it shows. She also made this class fun!
Everything comes straight from the textbook (even exams, do the practice questions). Her lectures can be slow in the sense of getting through content but she gives a lot of relatable examples to help remember. Very caring and understanding.
Rita is a very opinionated professor that if you do not have the same opinion you will do poor. Expects too much with little time. Does not give all the information when doing assignments and tends to not care about students.
Rita's lectures can be quite slow content wise but she goes into a lot of examples and is very open to class discussions. What was expected on the term paper wasn't the most clear.
I loved having her! I have had her in actually a couple of different Sociology classes and sad now that I have taken everything that she teaches. Hope I can take another class from her again. Overall, amazing prof, she is very kind, and funny
Currently taking online SOC 111. There is the textbook and lecture slides and that's all you get. No recorded lectures giving more context to the material. There are no practice questions for midterms and there is no rubric provided for the term paper. Either this is one of the most lazy professors I've had or she just doesn't care.
Read the powerpoints and the textbook front to back, that is all you get. There are no lectures, no required readings, and zero guidance!
She seemed very pleasant, but her material was dull. There's not a lot of additional material to study aside from PowerPoint and textbook readings. I often did not attend class since I found that if I just read the posted lectures and textbook chapters I was receiving the same information as I would have in class but from the comfort of my bed.
Rita seems like a kind professor; but, her grading criteria is ambiguous. The 2nd midterm which was all long answer had no rubric given. The paper also had no rubric. Even after they were handed back and graded. The feedback on the paper was two sentences, and I scored higher than average but was told I needed to work on my spelling. Avoid!
Rita is a very nice lady, and her lectures were always interesting. The midterm, however, was based on the textbook and had definitions she had never mentioned in class. If you use the textbook to study you will do great but be weary that just going to class isn't enough.
Rita makes lectures entertaining with her humour and her ability to relate concepts to current world issues. it's necessary to read the textbook as that's what her tests will ask you about, but she is clear about that in her teaching. attendance is not mandatory but lectures are enjoyable. she encourages class discussion!
Overall Rita is a gem! her lectures are very interesting and always well prepared! Although she does not curve your mark! beware! I should mention she is rather insensitive to the gothic community and quote on quote said "they have to turn normal eventually".
Professor Hamoline is alright. She is very blunt and her tests are mostly from the text book. If you don't attend class and read the text and take good notes and study you will be fine. The midterms and final are over 90% from the text book and very little from her lectures. The lectures are interesting, but the info is not on the tests.
I was sad to hear she is retiring. Very memorable and sweet lady. I love how she explains things and her insight. One of the best courses I have taken and am almost done uni. Very good exams, very fair. Easy credit if you show up and read the textbook. She is good at engaging you and applying concepts to reality. I will miss Ms. Hamoline!
Great professor! very kind and understanding. Coursework is very reasonable and straightforward. Would 100% recommend taking her classes if you can!
She is so amazing
I took all courses offered by Professor Hamoline, and I loved them! Unfortunately there are no more classes for me to take with her. I highly recommend any class offered by her, grading scheme is explained well and lectures are filled with real life examples. Lectures are really interesting and participation is appreciated but not required.
Rita's lectures bring the material to life, though the grading can be ambiguous. I found Unstuck study helpful for practice questions when the midterm rubric was unclear. Overall, an engaging class if you stay on top of the readings.
