Cool professor!
She's a super nice lady though; you really can't appreciate how friendly and down to earth she is, and how much good insight she has outside of her field, unless you go and talk to her outside of class casually. The class is fairly easy, but pretty boring, and she teaches mostly by reading right off her slides, so attendance is hardly mandatory.
Great Professor. Very approachable and helpful. Powerpoints are very clear that you dont even need the book to study. Exams are very reasonable and easy to do well on if you study her notes. Overall professor hatfield makes the class enjoyable and doable.I would highly recommend taking biochem with her. GREAT PROFESSOR!
Really nice and helpful professor but her class is mostly based off slides making her lectures boring.
BORING LECTURES! SHE READS OUT OF THE SLIDES. IF NOT FOR THE ICLICKERS POINTS I WOULD NEVER SHOW UP FOR CLASS BECAUSE I HAD TO STUDY ON MY OWN ANYWAYS. MAKE SURE YOU READ THE BOOK AND DO OWL PROBLEMS. DR. HATFIELD MIGHT KNOW THE MATERIAL BUT CANNOT GIVE IT OUT. HER OFFICE HOURS ARE NO HELP EITHER. AVOID HER UNLESS YOU WANT TO STUDY ON YOUR OWN.
Very nice lady but her lectures are boring. The bright side is that she gives many hints on what is going to be on quizzes and exams.
Professor Hatfield is probably the best Chem professor available between she, Jursich, and Modey. She does read off the slides, but she explains things well. When she is in office hours, she will help you. She is also the Biochem professor and it's obvious she knows what she is talking about. Extra Credit questions on her tests! EASY TESTS.
only take her if jursich and modey are the other options. otherwise, safe yourself. you can see she has no actual knowledge about chemistry. her lectures are pointless and she knows it too which is why she throws in iclickers, forcing you to go.
She's a nice professor with clear objectives for the class... Tests are easy if you study. Gives out way too much extra credit IMO. Generous curves that some people don't need. It's obvious that some people study and succeed and others don't and complain. Sink or swim. Your choice.
She is a very nice and easy professor. All of her exams were easy if you studied and went to lecture. OWL homework broke concepts down that were confusing. She gives a lot of grade boosters (e.c., iclickers, homework etc.)
She is a great professor! One of the best at UIC. Speaks and explains material clearly, very nice, and very approachable. The exams are NOT completely easy, so you must study for them!
Had her for biochem and the course is pointless. If have next to nothing to prepare for the exam except for the book. She gives few problems with no answers. Lecutres are just summary of book. It is basically just you and the book for a 400 level course.
She was a very GENEROUS teacher, she curves exam CRAZY STYLE, some people dont even deserve the curves she gives. If you study exam, its easy to A's an exam, if i can do it , you can also!!!!
Had her for biochem and the course is pointless. If have next to nothing to prepare for the exam except for the book. She gives few problems with no answers. Lecutres are just summary of book. It is basically just you and the book for a 400 level course.
She seems okay, but its a lot of materials and she just fly through them. You'll need extra help like TAs and student teachers. Plan on spending extra time for this subject. Good luck.
Hatfield's lectures aren't the most entertaining, but her class is over all easy. She gives practice problems for all of the chapters which help a lot and make the exams and quizzes simple. She's very generous with grading.
She's a great professor. Very understanding and easy to talk to. Her grading is reasonable and as long as you study the material-which gets tricky towards the end-you will be good. Make sure to do the online homework because it can pile up.
Dr. Hatfield is a pretty good teacher overall. Her lectures do get boring since she reads off the power points all the time. If you get all your iClicker points it will really bump up your grade. Shes really understanding and lowest quiz gets dropped. Out of all the chem 112 teachers that were available at the time she was definitely the best.
She was a phenomenal professor and is very willing to work with you. The class is hard, but an A is very possible. She really cares about her students
Dr. Hatfield is great and very easy on students. Yes, she does read off the lecture slides, which is incredibly boring, but you want to be at lecture for the iclicker points. Watch out for her inappropriately flirtatious TA Gennadii and know how to do the in-text examples from the book, and you will do well in this class.
I had her for general chemistry before this so I knew what to expect. She's very fair and down to earth. The exams were pretty challenging but she tells you what you need to know if you go to lecture. She gives tons of extra credit and is very entertaining during lectures. I really enjoyed biochemistry, can't wait for the medical school version.
1) Grade based on class curve. 85 A 2) Textbooks Very helpful. Read & take detailed notes for sure. 3) Exams Assigned homework questions come out. Word by word Everything in lecture counts. Even tiny details 4) HW Assigned, don't have to 5) Quiz Difficulty depends on TA, & pop quiz e.c.
Even though I ended up dropping the class, she was an okay professor. She had plenty of office hours and knew what she was talking about. However she would read her power points word for word. Make sure to do problems from the book because a few of them will end up on the test.
Exams were okay in comparison to quizzes, which were written by TAs and very tough. Class is barely curved if you're shooting for a good grade. 89% was an A for us. Professor is nice, helpful, and good at teaching. Class involved a lot of memorization and time outside of class though. Read book for clarity.
Idk why so many people are complaining. She is a good professor compared to others and her quizzes and exams aren't bad at all. Would def recommend taking her!
Dr. Hatfield is a great professor. Although she reads straight from her slides, she really clarifies the material when someone has a question. Online homework is on the difficult side. But the tests are pretty easy. Iclicker usage counts for participation.
This class was more self taught. Hatfield only reads off her slides. She is always there for the students and always has office hours if you have any questions. Quizzes and Exams aren't that bad you just need to know the material well.
I'm not sure how other students learn, but I learn 95% of the material by myself for all my classes. With that being said, I usually read through the book and did practice problems from there to prepare for examsquizzes. I think that method worked well as I crushed every examquiz. Practicalslabs aren't bad either. Some effort should get a B .
Nice person and tries to help students but you will have to do a lot of work on your own to really understand the material. She basically reads the slides that's it, even when explaining she reads off the slides. Be prepared to work extra hard and study the text book thoroughly. But do go to her office hrs as she is always willing to help.
Definitely is given more credit than is due. She talks AT the class rather than to the class. She reads off of power points the entire time and does not go the extra step to even attempt to teach the material. It is best that one studies the material on their own because you will not learn the material when you are sitting in her class.
Trust me, she is the best professor you can get for Chem 112. Her tests are definitely the easiest (no one else gives multiple choice, + she gives FREE extra credit sometimes). No matter who you take you have to keep up and make sure you know the material on your own. There's a reason this is the most dropped class at UIC.
Go to office hours and get help from the TA's. Read the book! I didn't do too bad in the class but the book helped a lot b/c I didn't really pay attention during lectures. She hints things that would be on tests & quizzes so take note on those things. Nice person, but gets upset when things get out of hand. iclicker/ discuss point saves your grade.
Lectures are read off powerpoint, very boring overall. Iclickers on wednesdays. TA's cant speak english. Just dont pick her for gods sake.
By far one of the best professors I have had at UIC. Super willing to explain hard material and work around student's schedules. If you're having problems she is super kind about it. Rounds grades up!
She gave worksheets that were very useful. I didn't pay attention in lecture and instead did those worksheets a day prior to the quizzes/exam and I never got anything lower than a B. Because this course is fairly easy, it doesn't really matter who the teacher is unless you absolutely can't self teach.
All other Chem 101 teachers make it way harder than it needs to be. Hatfield is good and her TA's are awesome. Lots of time outside of class to learn things.
Chemistry might me hard to grasp, especially if your high school teachers didn't do a good job teaching it (which was my case). I honestly love this professor and i highly recommend you to take her! Her lectures are easy to follow, even when the content gets a bit tricky. TAKE HER IF YOU ARE LUCKY ENOUGH!!!! :) 3
She is the most amazing Chemistry teacher ever! I thought I was bad at Chemistry because I normally get A's and B's and I basically failed Chemistry in high school. I only have our final left and as long as I get a high B or an A (which I have on every exam she's given) I will have an A in her class. Now, I enjoy chemistry! I will miss her class!
She's too sarcastic, stops every 5 minutes because someone's talking, picks on students if they're too loud. Lectures are boring, barely bearable, iclickers almost every day so lecture is mandatory, she gives online homework every week, plus extra worksheets in class, and expects you to come into class already have read the chapter.
She there to help anyone that needs help after class and she gives you more info and could help you with any subject your struggling one on one.
Professor Hatfield is a decent professor for Chem 101. As long as you do your homework and show up to class, you'll pass. You'll lose points on tests for not putting simple stuff like units or not showing your work. You will need an iClicker for this class.
Honestly not a bad teacher just doesn't show her work and just reads from the slides. Actually study and don't assume same problems will be on the quizzes.
Overall, she's is a great professor but don't expect to get an A just because you go to all the lectures; go to her office hrs, your TA, and peer leading. You need to make sure you have a good grasp on the material to understand CHEM. Also make sure you really try in the sapling b/c it makes a difference when you're in that 89% line
Hatfield is one of the worst teachers I have had in college so far. If you take her class then be ready to learn everything on your own. She reads of slides and when she does any problems she does not go over multiple steps. Her style of teaching is very old and hard. She is so sarcastic in an awful way. I do not recommend this teacher at all.
Hatfield was the worst professor I've had at UIC thus far. I learned more from my textbook, youtube videos and peer leaders than I did from her. I just went to class for Iclicker points otherwise I taught myself Chem 101. It was brutal and I only recommend taking her if you can naturally teach yourself an entire class.
this professor reads the slides off of her laptop and expects the class to fully understand what she says. Doesnt walk the students through tough problems regularly. Besides these negatives, shes very accessible outside of class
The class covers a lot of material and she does her best to adjust according to what the class needs. I got a C and I know I could have done better but I just did not want to do the work. She posts EVERYTHING you need and more to get an A, and chooses great TAs. Didn't need a textbook because of this.
Hatfield is okay. She goes very quick from slide to slide, so prepare to learn the material on your own. The TA isn't helpful either. She doesn't properly explain how to do something. However, Hatfield has great slides and uploads all material in a timely manner. The material that is taught can be easy or hard depending on your effort.
She explains everything really well and is not strict at all. Quizzes and exams are easier than other professors.
Dr. Hatfield knows what she is teaching, she is an excellent professor but she does read off slides, which she posts online later on the day. She is a bit annoying as she expects so many things on those little desks all at once and continuously going back from notebook to workbook and iClickers. Pretty good teacher.
She is a great professor however this course was more conceptual than math based. She majority reads off the power points which are derived from the textbook. Rarely goes over problems or teaches how to attempt math based problems. Could be a better class if the lecture was more engaging. Test are majority conceptual so please read the textbook
She is the worst professor I have ever seen. She makes attendance mandatory even tho she reads off the slides. She has strict policies on missing discussion. You lose 2 points every time you miss a discussion. I am not saying you get 0, NO, you get a -2. I really dislike her class and I am so glad I won't see her again LOL
Hatifield was good, her tests were apparently easier than other profs. For her tests- I'd study from the questions at the back of the book and review from the discussion worksheets!
The professor pretty much read off the slides. If you are taking CHEM with her, you should just study from the book. Her slides & lectures are kinda worthless. Attendance is mandatory tho which is a bit of an L.
Dr Hatfield is a gr8 professor. Yes, she reads off the slides but makes sure u understand the material and concepts. Gives Lecture worksheets which is a gr8 help for the exms. Ofcourse, chem is not going to be easy, to earn that A you have to work hard. Very caring professor wants the students to succeed. Exms are easy compared to other professors.
She changes slides faster than I change my mind.
Dr. Hatfield is an amazing professor, regardless of what anyone says. A lot of material is gone over in only 15 weeks, so every chemistry professor lectures fast. She is a great professor who commits a lot of her time outside of class in order to help her students. Go to her office hours, they help a lot. She is also an amazing person in general.
I took Hatfield because I thought she would be the best choice, but I was wrong. Her tests are really difficult and you will have to read from the book. The tests are very concept heavy and problems can be very challenging. I studied for hours and could not get higher than a C on any of the tests or quizzes. The only good thing is the curve.
No chem class is going to be easy. These professors have to cram content in 15 weeks so it's always going to feel "rushed". Rita gave a lot of in-class worksheets to help aid us which not all the professors did. She was also very accessible outside of class. Her class averages were also much higher than the other professors and she curves a little.
Professor Hatfield gives curve. About 85% overall score got an A. She gives review session before each exams and quizzes. She answers all the questions from students after the class, even when she is walking to her office.
The worst professor I have ever had. She spends the first 10 minutes of class talking about absolutely nothing, and the last 10 minutes of class trying to rush through slides. She incredibly hard to follow during lecture. You have to teach yourself, basically. I'm not bad at chem, but I'll probably get a low C in her class if I'm lucky.
Dr. Hatfield is very caring for her students and very willing to help. Every chemistry course is hard and you will spend most of your time teaching yourself regardless of who your professor is.
Expects us to act like grad level students, but makes us put name tags on our desk like preschoolers. Attending lecture is mandatory for a 5% extra credit boost, but real impractical since she all she does is reads off her slides. Book really isn't useful as she claims it is. Learn structures, vocabulary, and be able to explain concepts for the A.
I had Hatfield for chem 122. She is very helpful and informative. She was a great professor its just chem 122 in general is very tough class. She would urge students to use the office hours if you have questions and very helpful in them. Her tests are pretty straightforward whatever you see in the exam pointers you will see on the exam.
To everyone saying that she cares about her students, let me tell you my story. She didn't let me reschedule the first quiz of the class so I can go to my grandfather's funeral. I literally had to skip half of it just to take a 30 point quiz. Plus she's just impossible to follow, takes her time with the slides a the beginning then rushes at the end
Prof. Hatfield is accessible outside of class. Go to office hours to actually understand the concepts, this will definitely prepare you for exams because she goes over everything you need to know.
She's awesome!
She's a very caring professor and is very helpful in office hours.
I heard she was the best, but her lectures sucked. She always rushed through the lectures, and it made me feel bad not being able to comprehend anything. Nice person, but didnt know how to pace. Exams were hard, just know to study much in advance!
Worst chemistry professor Ive ever had. All she does is read off of slides and goes on conceptual chemistry tangents that dont even make sense. Only reason lecture is worth attending is she will sprinkle some info of what to expect on exams. Shes nice and passionate, but dont see how thats gonna help you pass. Chem at UIC is literally a joke.
You can easily pass the class and get an A if you listen to the lectures, take notes, do the discussion worksheets, and ask for help during office hours. If you put in the work, you will do well.
Shes knowledgeable but does not know how to teach, she emails important information late and not the best communicator, she does not even reply to emails! I cried everyday of this class. Exams are 10x harder than what she taught. It is like signing up for class and getting mental breakdowns everyday. Definitely not recommended.
There is a LOT of content in the class and skipping lectures will not go well. Make sure to put in effort by communicating with professor if you need help. She is very helpful when asked questions. The quizzes are basic and exams do not ask you to know all the details. She gives A LOT of EXTRA CREDIT which really helps.
This professor gave me so much stress this semester. She gives you way too many assignments; it almost feels like she doesn't realize we have other classes, families to take care of, and jobs to pay for school. I had to neglect the rest of my classes just to focus on hers and I still felt behind and lost. Lectures were long and didn't even help.
I got an A in the class, but with so much effort. She has some decent lecture videos but I had to learn a majority of the class on my own and with peers to help. Everything is asynchronous except discussions. Not that great of a communicator and graded the tests much later than other professors of the course. You have to put in the work to pass.
Very nice professor and helpful during office hours. In order to get an A you will most likely have to attend weekly review sessions and rewatch some lectures. Once the learning material goes past HS chemistry it gets more difficult to grasp. Make sure you turn in all of your homework on time and attend TA office hours because the class moves fast.
Really good on teaching! I understood the content so well, and i really believe it was because of the way she teached.
Of all the professor I found her to be the most enjoyable and actually enjoy what she teaches. Her work load was a lot but manageable, you need to attend discussion and if possible try not to miss lecture because you will fall behind so quick. Exam are late and will tank your grade. I dropped because it was getting too much, no way to score an A
average chem class, although known for being one of the better chem 122 professors. teaching yourself the lessons was better than listening to the lectures which were boring and repeated from the textbook. only showed up for the clicker attendance and clicker practice questions.
This is probably one of the best chem professors offered at uic. Her lectures are clear and normally paced. Never once did I feel like her lessons were rushed. The homework workload was pretty standard amongst all of the chem 122 classes.
The negative reviews here are so unwarranted. Hatfield is by far one of the nicest and best chem profs at UIC. No, she won't cover every tiny detail in lecture, that's impossible. Pay attention to her lectures, get confident in the discussion worksheets, put some effort into the homework and you'll get an A. And take advantage of her review sheets!
Hatfield was a good professor, probably the best at UIC. She offered a lot of extra credit and is so easy to get in contact for office hours. Gives a few points as well at the end.
easily the best professor for chem 122, gave extensions on assignments and told us exactly what we needed to know for the exams, was very understanding when I got sick and allowed me to still get a grade for the exam, if you read all of the textbook chapters, go to lecture, and do all homework assignments on time, it shouldn't be too bad.
She loves to pick on students and humiliate them in front their peers during lectures.
dunno why she has such a low rating, but this was specifically for chem 115. overall, she was very understanding and helpful. her labs were also really interesting. she gives a lot of study materials to help you prepare for all of the exams.
Best chem professor at uic. If you read the textbook, attend lecture and do practice problems 122 is an easy A.
She was a very kind and bubbly person which made lectures bearable. The content is easy for the first exams, especially if you took CHEM 101, just prepare for the orgo section which lots of people struggled with. Show up, do the work and get the easy points!
The class was difficult but you get the effort you put in. She was available during office hours, provided practice exams which would be similar or exactly the same as the ones she put on the actual exam. Attending lectures was a must, but she did record lectures. She was very understanding, and allowed me to submit post-lab late for credit.
She is a really nice professor. Gives lots of resources like tutoring, extra office hours before exams. Go to class! Attendance is worth a lot . Labs are annoying but depends on your TA. The class is hard its organic chem and gen chem 2, but its easy to pass if you put in work, do your homework, and there's a big curve at the end.
Many of her ratings are either extremely positive or negative; they are right that she is nice, but the main reason I rated her a 3 is because of the exams. They each had at least one question, worth major points, that the entire class ended up missing. Often the questions on exams are indirectly worded or incorporate concepts from later classes.
