o my gosh, the hardest EVER
No Comments
she is tough, but very helpful and far less intimidating out of the classroom
best prof ever
yea...no
Gotta love Rita.
not easy but she's very smart and helpful
No Comments
she is very good and very helpful and she willing to help when you need it
judgemental, and not caring. worst prof i ever had.
I agree, far less intimidating out of the classroom. She can be dismissed as an ultra feminist nazi, but her bark is worse than her bite. PS- she likes NASCAR
Good prof cares about her students depending on if you care about the class.
Good speaker, makes required books interesting.
I got a good grade in the class, but she lost her temper and shouted when I pointed out how she misunderstood one assignment she was a marker for. Only prof I have ever shouted back at.
Rita is great....always helped
This is the best prof I have ever had! Her class is easy if you do the readings and write your papers according to her instruction. For serious students, she has all the time in the world. She teaches with energy and confidence. Take this class!!!
I really enjoyed the class all year.My essay average all year was 75%+ and my last essay I wrote for her she gave me 40% and told me I did NOT know how to write an essay.Go figure. She definitley killed my confidence.
Pretty tough readings, tough marker, helpful in some ways, but unclear about what she actually wants. Prone to say something is okay, and then mark it wrong, or dock marks for doing it. Overall, Great great great person out of class, but tough in class. Quite feminist and makes everything sexual!
Rita, is tough in all respects of this class. Her material and expectations of students. She will offer help with the class via internet or in person when time permits. Don't expect a high grade in the class, but expect that there will be improvement in your writing after taking the class.
She is very frustrated person and lacks in understanding student’s personal problems. I would not recommend her.
Ok...I had no desire to take this class, but because it was required..I decided to take it in summer session. She is awesome!!!!! Not the easiest material, but she made everything so clear and I enjoyed attending! I really think she deserves more credit than those who have given already on this site! I would recommend her!!!!
She is one of the worst profs I have ever had. She is completely unclear about what she wants and totally unhelpful. She destroys your average and your confidence with her "constructive" criticism. After this class, I feel incapable of writing an essay.
One of the most underrated profs. She is tough but fair and if one follows her advice it yields good results both on papers and exams. She transformed a rather dull first year slog into an interesting class and turned a mediocre midterm performance by me into a very good final grade.
I looked forward to this class all term. Rita was clear, generous, and fair. She encouraged independent thought, selected unusual and provocative readings, and made comments for improvement that I found unusually helpful. Her class rekindled my love of literature after a close call with lesser prof.

She was an awful prof. I took this class by correspondance and the semester before I came out of my English class with a high 80 and she would not give me anything over 65 no matter who I got to help me even other Eng. profs. She was so mean every time I would phone for help.. Awful prof.. don't recommend her at all.
Matlock was tough, but a very good prof. She fully explained each novel/shortstory clearly, and covered every topic possible involving the book. She marks hard, but helps you better understand essay writing, granted you go to her for help. I really enjoyed this class.
The worst prof I've had on U of S!!!

A very lovely lady.. All our readings had a fairly feminist undertone (coincidence?). I wouldn't anticipate getting very high marks, but shes straight up about why you lost marks, and really encouraged discussion. I just about took ENG 113 just to have another class with her. I don't dig anything that much, though.

Rita encourages us to look at literature critically rather then the way everyone else has taught us, shes a tough marker but if you work at it you'll be fine.
Rita was an amazing prof. I love her. I am only a 68 student but a mark means nothing to me in comparison to what I am going to take away from her class. she has an amazing ability to pick out possiblities that most would not consider and is willing to take risks. I would most definately recomend this class if you aren't afraid of a hard marker.
I dont think Rita is a tough marker at all. I am terrible in english and have done very well in her class. She is an excellent prof who is more then willing to help if you need it. She is not mean at all. I would definately take a class with her again and recommend her.
An excellent teacher. Teaches students to read critically. Highly recommend.

I think Rita is by far the best prof. i've had. she is willing to help, if you are willing to learn. she treats each person with respect and encourages all to share their opinion as no one is ever wrong as long as you can defend your argument. and yes, she is hot.
Her marking is completely arbitrary. She picks a few favorites, so suck up early on. You would have to TRY to fail her class, although it is also very difficult to get a good mark. The vast majority will get 64-69 %
Really good prof. Always responded to emails & questions. Took a writing help couarse from her at same time so it really helped my mark. Took class (110)as 2 sections (113 & 114) and got 70+ papers in both. Got a final grade of 70 in 114, 71 in 113. Just show up and pay attention. Drops lots of hints as to whats going to be on the final
tough but helpful
She is a tough marker. It is tough to get an 80 in the class. She is a good prof though and if you are taking it in the summer (doesn't count towards the average) then i would recommend her. She's a good prof if you don't mind a low mark. i usually got high 70s
hard marker
Terrible marker. I took a 100 level class that she was the TA for and was graded as if I were taking a masters course. I had another university professor review my assignment after she had graded an he said her comments, (more like criticisms) were ridiculous. Will never take another class that she is associated with.
I loved Rita! Listen to what she has to say about your work because it goes a long way in her class and also the criticism helped in my other classes as well. I also took a Writing tutorial with her and I have nothing but good things to say. The Writing Centre helped so much with my essays for other classes, increasing my marks drastically!
Tough marker but reasonable, it definitely helped me improve my writing skills. Basically if you want to improve your essay writing take this class, she could find something wrong with everything. In a good way. This prof knows her stuff.
Horrible. Avoid.
Great Prof. Very helpful and interested in helping you become a better writer. Picked interesting texts. There are many small assignments but it really helps you have a good grasp of the material so the exams and papers are not as hard. Hope to have her again!
She was though but helpful. Approachable but won't reply you e-mails sometimes and replies were not very helpful, but I did learn how to write a good essay through this class.
hard marker, but every mark you got you know you deserved. rita will give you the time if you put in the effort. likely one of the best profs i've had. i highly recommend her class if you want to be challenged and bettered as a student.
Not good at all! she marked my exam's in my English class she was not professor, when the exams came back the answers we confirmed with the professor, she said were wrong. Her essay grades were always the same 64, but in other classes same level of work i would get 80's and 90's. I'm not sure what she actually grades on.
I am currently enrolled in her first year english class, so far im doing pretty well. I don't find her to mark particularly hard; I believe she is fair. One of my favourite profs so far.
Rita changes your entire approach to reading . Her material was quite interesting and entertaining.
Online is difficult even with an awesome prof, but when your teacher makes you feel stupid for asking for clarification.. especially online, it makes it impossible. She has little to no interaction with me and this is completely different than the other profs with online classes.
I have never been good at english and it has never been my favorite class but she took it to a whole new low! I felt whenever i asked a question that i was being talked down to and felt very stupid. Hard marker! i got docked marks for using a certain word that she "never really liked" lost marks every time I used it. AVOID AT ALL COSTS!
Yes, teaching is an art thats subjective, controversial, and ever-evolving. You may not be able to define it, but you can see it. The best professors are passionate and prepared, fair and forward thinking, and demanding and defined. They genuinely care about their pupils. And they willingly share their knowledge with pretense or provisions. But th
continue 3. She does not give you credit unless it is exactly as she thinks. I put sorta interested because I went into the class with high hopes, but this instructor really destroyed the subject for me.
I took her Online English 110 class. Very tough marker but if you show up and do your work you won't fail, expect a 70 as a good mark. That being said when you need help or have a question Rita is just a phone call or email away and will answer as quick as possible!
This class was painful. As an English lover, I had an optimistic attitude going into the class; however, this optimism was quickly replaced by dread. If you had any questions she would refer you back to the syllabus (which in most cases was not helpful). She made mistakes in 95% of her emails and was not invested in the course at all.
She was very organized and made the online class clear and easy to navigate, which was helpful. Her weekly emails were great for keeping on track, and thorough. The approach to the material seemed a bit narrow, but it was a decent class.
Rita is very brilliant and makes understanding literature easy! She is a tougher marking but it prepares us for our next year's. She explains everything so well and likes to joke around. She also loves to discuss and will get you going. Highly recommend and would take her class again!
I've been out of school for 7 years. I gave Rita's summer English course a try just to see how I felt. I am definitely a better writer than I was before the course and I feel she made it very easy for me to succeed. She actively engages the class in discussion. I'll continue university solely because of Rita Matlock. Show up, join in and get marks
Rita is great, she does care about her students. Teaches better than most english professors even tho she is only a season lecturer. I learned a lot from her summer class, glad I took it with her. My marks did suffer from her hard markings but she prepared me good for my second year.
Incredibly picky but really does care about her students. As long as you follow the instructions perfectly and read everything you should be fine.
Rita is a tough marker for sure. She is a great teacher, but she makes you work for it. I also didn't like any of the books or short stories we had to read, and boy did we have a lot to read. I do have to admit that my writing style has improved thanks to her.
Be ready to read like crazy. Attendance is mandatory to do well, she discusses so much about the books. Midterms are hard and she's a very tough marker.
This class was awful. Is an incredibly hard grader, I think only because she wants to teach her students the lesson that they "can't write essays like they did in high school." Admitted she doesn't calculate her class average. Put in a lot of effort, still nearly failed the class. At least all of the readings are easy to access online and/or cheap.
Rita cares about your success. I finally know how to write a great essay. She focus on your writing and gives you clear examples on how to write successfully. Take this class if you want to improve your writing.
Rita is a brilliant professor! I love her. she's a tough marker, but if you're serious about improving your essay writing and composition skills, then tough marking and dense feedback is something that will help you a lot. Lastly, she's a decent person who cares about her student. In fact, she would reply to my emails even on sundays. God bless her
She cares about her students and wants them to succeed, so she gives helpful feedback when you ask for help. I don't find her a tough grader at all since I put in the same effort as I did with other classes and got a good mark for it. My writing skills have definitely improved because of her. (P.S. This is coming from a non-native English speaker)
Made the material incredibly interesting and engaging. A tough but fair grader with a well organized grading plan that allowed you to make up for a bad mark over the rest of the semester.
Tough but fair grader. Very interesting and inspiring lectures and classroom discussions. Offers helpful feedback on assignments before you submit them. My writing has really improved through this class.
Would not recommend taking one of her classes.
She give great feedback but I only found out half way through the class some of her expectations. Her outlines and weekly 10 minutes posts did not help to clear up what our expectations were. I was getting very frustrated and put in plenty of effort to make this class a good one.
Took an online summer English class and was not a fan. She was a tough grader and her feedback was often quite harsh. She chooses great readings, but it is a lot to keep up with in a condensed format. Send everything to the writing center and be prepared to write exactly what her opinions are. I feel that she would be better in class than online.
Standoffish. If you're taking an english as a mandatory elective and are in another college, avoid her at all costs. Very specific expectations without properly communicating them and provides virtually no wiggle room as it pertains to those expectations. Stinginess for minute details completely outweighs the actual quality of your writing.
Very good at explaining what she expects of you, and how to receive the best mark possible. Easy to talk to and understand. Would recommend taking a class with her.
this professor will monitor all audio if u watch or not and she will give you low mark even no mark if she found u didn't watch the audio, and she didnt say watch audio is mandatory, bur she push you have to watch if she check EVERYDAY, it make you very nervous. she give mark very mean and a lot of details u need to care. DONT REGISTER HER CLASS!!!
I really enjoyed Professor Matlock's class. She is on the tougher side for marking but I really felt she made me a better writer. She cares about the basics and little things in writing but I found all her critiques helpful! I would definitely take another class from her!
tough grader, gotta say she kinda care for student. But if you are looking for easy credit she is not the right one
At first Prof. Matlock was very intimidating and I was nervous about the marking. Throughout the course she definitely helped me improve my writing skills. She was very helpful and always replied to emails fast and with useful comments. I would recommend taking this class.
While Rita may be a tough marker, she really cares about her students and wants to help them become great writers. The reading material was interesting and her lectures really made you think deeply about the work in an intriguing way. Her feedback is helpful, and she is always offering extra help to her students after class time.
Rita is an incredibly teacher. She may be a hard marker but she does it with the intentions of setting you up for the rest of your university classes. I often found the people complaining about her to be students who clearly did not read the assigned books or who didnt take the class seriously. Not her fault you didnt try lol
Very thoughtful professor, cares for her students and gives great feedback on work! Very good literary works to read. I enjoyed this class a lot!
She definitely has a love for word count and is particular with word meanings and 'wasting words'. She understands that English isn't a top priority for most first year students, but has high hopes for your writing. Marking is done fairly quickly. Graded on midterm, essay, and final, but did give easy earned bonus marks for online quizzes.
Passive aggressive, very specific on what she is looking for but does not communicate such. I wrote essays 10x better than anything in high school and still got awful marks and rude feedback.
Rita is a pretty strict professor, passive aggressive, & she honestly scares me. I took English 114-41 and it was just too much essay writing for me. She doesn't like technology at all so be prepared for her to hand out papers. She marked decently hard but her feedback was very detailed. Her feedback also kind of made me feel bad about my work.
She was tough but clear and honest. I learned a lot from her and my writing improved.
I will never take another class from Rita ever again. She marks way too hard for a first-year class especially for people just out of highschool. She is very passive aggressive, and it seems like she is yelling at you for something you didn't do. Her lectures are boring, and she marks as if everyone is getting an English degree. Find another prof.
She appears to work hard; she seems to do her grading in timely manner. I do not recommend her class because it is true that she is passive aggressive; if you ask a question, then she will tend to give you an answer that rejects and discourages your idea and reasoning. She tends to provide a lot of Info to students and expect them to remember all.
Rita is precisely the type of professor you need to develop university level writing skills. ENG 110 with Rita was my first university class, and it helped me a ton in developing good wring habits, In fact, thanks to the writing skills I learned in Eng 110, I eventually got two of my essays published at the undergrad level.
Her syllabus is so organized to the point that she gives you checklist of what you should be doing on each day/week - helped me finish all the readings on time while working full time. If English is your second language like me, her readings are set up very well as the first literary work is very easy to understand! Tough grader but good feedback
Rita Matlock is a bit of a tough grader but her feedback is fantastic. She is very passionate about her work and it shows. Her classes are always fascinating and the readings always took me by surprise. In her syllabus she has a 'To-Do List' of what should be completed each week which is helpful.
the rudest professor I have a ever had the displeasure of dealing with 0/10
Find a different professor. So rude and hard to deal with. This class has tons of content with no time to complete. Very high expectations for a first-year class. She made many mistakes within the course: breaching confidentiality, and the midterm was not set up correctly. She talks very highly of herself, yet this was the worst course I've taken.
Brutal course and lectures. Rita does not respect students and clearly thinks she's better than everyone. Multiple mistakes within the course. Heavy reading, writing, and her lectures are long and hard to stay engaged as she sounds awful. Expect to spend 10 plus hours a week on this course...
Just the worst Professor ever.
She seems scary at first, but she is actually such a sweetheart.
She very much cares about what she's teaching! May come off intermediated but she's honestly so so so so amazing.
Rita comes off very "abrupt" in her lecture videos, but she cares about setting everyone up for success. You'll be a better writer taking her class, particularly if this is your first "writing" class in University. Was very flexible about essay topics. If you have questions, talk to her via phone - she's great to chat with and very accommodating.
Professor Matlock is a tough grader, but her feedback is invaluable. The coursework is challenging, but using Unstuckstudy alongside the textbook really helped me succeed in the class.
Rita is obviously passionate about what she does but this class was rough. She is rude with her feedback, and her expectations are very high for a first year English class. There is so much course content which makes it difficult to focus on other classes. I wouldn't recommend her unless it is your last resort.
matlock was a tough prof, but very in-line with the rest of the english profs. feedback on essays and midterms are useful, but very picky about wordiness and usage of words. only a few recorded lectures, the rest of the notes are posted on canvas. returns assignments very fast. i enjoyed all of the stories and texts she chose for the course.
Feed back on assignments seems rude but it's helpful!
