One of the best poets around. Very helpful in class and life. A great professor and a great person. After a class with him you will see the world in a new way.
Concentrates more on the content and essence of writing, rather than the same grammar that you have already had your whole life until now. Alot of group/peer evaluations on writing. Good teacher.
He is a fantastic teacher. It is a joy to go to class because he is full of energy. He gets you excited about the subject matter, and provides good feedback on writing.
This guy is incredibly hot. Not only is he hot, he is one of the most brilliant teachers I have ever encountered. He has a passion for teaching and not only teaches but writes as well. He has won innumerable awards .. students would be wise to get a first edition and ask for an autograph.
Loves to talk and gives you all the information you need and more! He is easy, fun, VERY talented and intelligent. He is popular and well known among many professionals in he literary field as well. Great poet! Super insight.
A good teacher. He knows what he is talking about. Helpful. Only problem is he VERY opinionated. Sometimes scary to ask a question. Will make you feel dumb. But overall a would take him again.
I took 1010 from him this summer. Way better than Bensch, whom I'd taken it before from (obviously had to repeat). Easy and fair grading. Lets you pick your own subjects. Gives prep assignments for the papers that aren't graded, not hard, but very useful. Fun to listen to. He can go off a bit, but always ties it into the subject. I highly recommend
TOTAL JACKASS. HE IS OPIONATED AND WRITES FIRST PERSON JAZZ POETRY..TOTALLY PRETENTIOUS.
One of the best teachers I have had. He inspires and encourages writing in it's pure form. He also concentrates on content and meaning, more so than grammar. I found he really funny. He has an incredibly dry sense of humor that I really enjoyed.
The only reason Rob teaches is to have a captive audience! He never says anything worth while and deliberately tries to offend anyone christian in his classes (which I'm not..but was still offended). He is difficult and NOT at all helpful or interested in seeing his students succeed. He should be fired. And I got an A...
he grades way easy and has an opinion on everything and loves it if you can argue why your point is right and his is wrong. You can tell he is good at what he does. I would take a class from him again if i needed one
He looks mean as hell, but is funny. Dry sence of humor. He is a Great Teacher, he knows his stuff! He will help you become a great writer. I got an A in the class, as well I had to work hard for it. He gives you alot of time to do your papers. I recomend him.
Very informed. Very entertaining. Really made me love the reading we had, and I am really not inot Brit Lit at all!
Carney is a great teacher. I could probably sit and listen to him for hours. He knows his stuff.
Rob was a pretty funny guy. He was sarcastic and witty. He is very blunt and tells it like it is. He helped me learn to write a lot better and helped us in class. Our class was scheduled MWF but he gave us the Fridays off. He graded kind of hard but over all a good teacher!
Rob is amazing! He's brilliant and has such a love for the literature that he passes it on to his students. He's willing to help you out, and gives detailed feedback on the papers. He makes you excited to read the literature. He's an amazing teacher! If you can, take any class at all from him!
Rob was the worst tacher I've had at UVSC. He loves to hear himself talk. A family emergency occured in my family during school and he was completely unhelpful.
Very educated and interesting. loves poetry and writing..open mind
Scary and intimidating teacher. I don't know that I made one comment in class because I was so scared he would tear me apart. His class is fun because he's humorous, but he grades hard and beware of plagiarizing in his class he knows everything!
He is a really cool guy, but I'm not crazy about him as a teacher. There is so much peer editing that I felt like I'm not really learning anything. He'll often leave the class while you are left to go over your essays with other students. I felt like I really only learned anything new when I went to the writing center.
Carney teaches upper division. He is hard to understand the basic principles of english. He assumes that you understand everything. He leaves class a lot to smoke and has you trade papers with students. Trading papers with students is not helpful at all. I found that most of the students didn't know what they were doing. Didn't learn anything.
Rob is wonderful. He is the Man!! I hate English he make you really want to write. Great Teacher does not make you waist money on a text book. We only had four essay. Rob is very funny
When I think of taking college English, I cringe. Carney was rude and never really smiled once. The work was easy, but opinions and thoughts seemed pointless to him. He made me feel like dirt basically..
Carney is very enthusiastic about what he teaches and his enthusiasm is contageous. He offers a very real, down to earth perspective of american literature and he's a great writer himself. Highly recommended!
Rob is the man! He knows so much history that he really helps you feel what it would be like to read the literature during the time period it was written in! He is not a hard grader AT ALL, and he is a brilliant poet himself!
BEST ENGLISH TEACHER EVER
This was such a fun class! Prof. Carney is hilarious and I really learned A LOT. I would definitely suggest taking this class
Professor Carney is clearly enthusiastic and knowledgeable about what he teaches. He is a very intense lecturer, but you don't have to take a lot of notes. The only thing I didn't like about the class is that it was mostly listening to him rant, and I don't think I learned much about literature or about how to analyze it.
Carney is hilarious! I laughed nearly every day in that class! You don't use a textbook and only have to write four essays all semester but you do have to work hard for your grade. Your effort will be rewarded though and you will become a better writer.
Carney scared the hell out of me the first day.. and I was about to switch out, but then I didn't. I am SO glad I stayed in, he is an AWESOME teacher, you can tell he loves what he teaches, he is extremely helpful I e-mailed him several times and he would respond that exact day with tons of help. He is the best! TAKE HIM! Also he is SO funny!
Carney is a good teacher, he failed one of my papers and I thought I was screwed but he let me rewrite it. He's a good teacher, super funny. I've learned a lot. Take him. you can only miss 5 classes by the way, so just go to class, it's easy- no quizes, tests, and the mid term and finals are easy portfolios of your work.
Carney is crazy. He's incredibly opinionated and has a very dry sense of humor. He doesn't crack a smile, ever. And he can be incredibly intimidating. He grades really, really hard, but doesn't require you to do busy work, so that's a huge plus. Four essays, midterm and final are portfolios of your work. He's really, really picky about commas.
Honestly, I was a little intimidated by Carney the first day. Yet, he ended up being one of my favorite teachers. He is way funny and nice. He is extremely helpful! You do not need a textbook & there is no busy work in his class. Four essays, a midterm, portfolio of your essays, & final exam - that's it! TAKE HIM, you won't regret it. :]
Funny man, Don't take him if you get offended easily. Four essays, take home mid-term, and portfolio of all your work for you final. best part no class on Fridays
Carney rocks! He reminds me of Dr. House, all he needs is a cane and a leather jacket. He is super funny and has a pretty easy class, if at first your intimidated, just stay there and you won't regret it.
What a wonderful professor and he is by far one of the best poets I've ever met. I highly recommend Rob as an professor
Carney is hilarious and good at what he does. I never had an interest in writing, but I enjoyed all four papers and writing exercises in his class. No useless text-books either.
Carney is hilarious. Don't let him scare you or intimidate you the first day. 4 essays, take home midterm, portfolio and take-home final. No textbook. Take him! He's been probably my favorite teacher this semester.
Professor Carney is one of the best teachers you could wish for. 4 papers and no textbook! He is one of the funniest teachers you will get to know and is willing to help you if you need any. Very funny class, I never wanted to miss a day.
Carney is by far the best English teacher I have had! He will help you become a better and creative writer if you do what he says. You will get out what you put into it!
DR. Carney is one of the best teachers I have had. He is hilarious and straight forward, and helps you excel in his class. You do not need a text book, and you will write four papers, where he will teach you an amazing writing process, and how to expand yourself! I would recommend him to anyone! If you love english and humor, take him!
When people say he's "straightforward", what they mean is he's a jerk. He's very no-nonsense and comes off abrasive. He won't treat you like an idiot, but he's as condescending as they come. I'm not a fan.
he's definitely an interesting man, who's not afraid to say what he thinks. he can definitely rub some people the wrong way with some of his comments, but as for the class. only 4 essays, adequate time to complete each and those are the only grades for the class. pretty easy english class if you can handle his blunt humor!
Dumb topics, but only 4 3-5 page papers. Easy compared to other 1010 classes. Don't miss class 5 times or you'll fail. Midterm portfolio & final portfolio. Easy. Lots of visiting in groups in class. He's very entertaining and funny. Probably best 1010 class. Others require papers everyday or 8 page papers. Much easier to bullcrap 3 page papers.
He is a great teacher! If you are looking for an English teacher who will help you understand and learn new ways of writing take this class. No text book is required. We had 4 essays each 3-5 pages long. He can be a bit opinionated but that is part of the fun in the class. He was fantastic and I highly recommend him.
Prof. Carney is a funny guy. I learned a lot about writing in this class. His exercises are very helpful, though they are not graded, do them. Compare your first paper to the last and you will see just how much of a difference has taken place in your writing. I recommend taking this class.
The bee's knees, son, the bee's knees. Very open-minded, loves academic dialogue and discussing texts. Grades leniently, if you show up and try at ALL you will not only pass but probably get a good grade. He's a genius (FACT), and sometimes his thoughts are a bit scattered, but he ultimately makes alot of sense and will teach you TONS if you listen
Professor Carney is a true genius when it comes to the world of literature. If you take his class it is fun but you learn a ton! He has three tests, one fiction exam (take home), 20 line memorization, and drama exam (take home), he's not hard but he is fair with his grading. Go take him!
The man changed my life as a writer. I want to take all of his classes. He really cares about you developing as a writer and as a free-thinker and brings it out in peer-editing exercises. Attendance is really important and there's a lot of work.
One of the best professors at UVU. Very approachable and will definitely be taking a class from him again. He joked about wanting a "hotness" rating on this site, so here you go Prof. Carney. You are now officially hot.
Brilliant English teacher and one of the funniest guys I've ever met.
Rob is entertaining and smart as hell. He will push your writing but will never diss you. He loves you to make crazy comments and will find away to tie it into the class. You will ready crazy cool and unusual stuff in his classes.
I'm not kidding when I say he single-handedly changed my mind on my major (was Botany, now English). Four 4-5 page papers, with his feedback only on the first one. Tons of peer edits. He really turns you into your best critic. Hands-down the best teacher I've ever had.
Professor Carney is honestly one of the best professors I've ever had. His class based on dystopian fiction was so far my favorite class at college. He really knows his stuff, and he's very good at getting good discussions going in class. And if you actually do the work, you'll get a good grade. Would definitely take from him again. In a heartbeat.
Rob Carney is an amazing professor! He has charisma and teaches in a way that flows and makes perfect sense. He is also extremely funny and I'm not going to lie, very handsome!
This guy is an entertainer. I took a Brit Lit class from him previously and jumped at the chance to take one of my upper division electives from him. He'll make you laugh and think about things in new ways. He doesn't give a lot of assignments but expects you to actually read and to put some real effort into the work you do. Very charismatic.
Carney is the best English teacher I have ever had. He makes the lectures specific to you and is so engaging to listen to! Honestly, probably the best professor on campus. There is very little homework, which is why you HAVE to go to class to understand what you're doing. The essays are on great topic's and you're never bored. Highly recommended.
He is a great professor don't get me wrong, he did help me with my writing process, and he gave great essay topics. But beware of asking questions that are "too easy to know" he will for sure believe that may be your challenging him? He gets frustrated a lot...
This professor is so fun to take. He gets passionate about his lectures, and he cares about student success. He is such a sexy guy. Writes his own stuff so he has a writers perspective to literature which is really cool.
I toke English 1010 Honors with Carney. I finished the class with a "B". The organization of this class is as follows: -Write a paper -Peer reviews in class -Rewrite paper You follow the above list four times, and at the end of the semester submit your best paper (this is your final). He allows you to argue your grade for the class.
I honestly have mixed feelings about this class. Lectures can be a little long and there isn't much student participation. I liked the class because it took me out of my comfort zone a little bit, but I learned a lot. It isn't traditional in the sense that you read and take a test on the material, the assignments ask you to think out of the box.
Carney is one of the best professors I've ever had and one of the coolest dudes as well. If you are also a cool dude or dudette, take any class from him and you won't regret it.
Rob is a really cool teacher and I had fun in that class. He lectures a lot and gives all the spoilers on what you were supposed to read, which makes you want to actually do the readings before you come to class. The class was pretty easy, except for a few hard papers and we had to do group presentations.
Carney is a cool dude. He has a lot of background and is overly qualified. I felt like there was a lot of lecturing though and not as much discussing as would've been nice. You don't have to read the texts to pass, but it does make the class more interesting.
I normally hate Literature classes, but I loved this one. A poet at heart, Carney will put on a performance in front of class in the best possible way. I always found myself smiling and laughing during his lectures. He knows the material almost by heart, and is super passionate. You'll never really know your grade though, he doesn't use canvas.
I really enjoyed this class. He gave us a lot of freedom within the assignments we did. I liked that because it allowed me to write in ways that I have never thought about, and he gave very good feedback. The class discussions were always interesting and helped me think in new ways.
Carney was a fantastic professor, his lectures were informative, captivating, and often hilarious. His assignments in Modern Legacies were challenging if the students allowed them to be. He's pretty passionate and will sometimes get carried away but he knows what he's talking about and will do a great job of running with student ideas.
Assigns daily reading, but does not grade upon completion so it was hard for me to motivate myself to read the assignments. It didn't matter if I did the homework or not. Very intelligent man and loves his subject, I enjoyed listening to his lectures on the material. Only two assignments the whole semester, nail those and you have an A.
Really great teacher. Is passionate about what he does, has homework assignments that are challenging, yet rewarding, and it's fun to hear from the other students what they came up with. He is a superb lecturer because he gets into it, and it makes you excited about the subject
I walked into class on the first day and was scared out of my shorts because he was very intimidating. Don't let it scare you! There was a good amount of reading but it is an honors class and it is a literature class. He doesn't make it feel that way. He is always relating it to our world today. It is ANYTHING but a dry class. I love him. TAKE IT!!
Prof Carney is the best! His lectures were so insightful and funny. This was my favorite class this semester! We had readings everyday and were graded on three (pretty easy) exams and a group presentation. He recognized that each student has individualized strengths, so he gave multiple options for the exams. I definitely recommend his class!
A lot of reading but you can just read the spark notes and be okay. 30% of grade is attendance but I missed 3 times and still got an A, he mostly wants participation/discussion. He doesn't use canvas but will let you know how you're doing if you ask. Amazing lectures and the assignments focused on exploring new ideas and writing what YOU think.
The assignments were a little hard to understand. He writes in a very unique, un-professor-way that is a breath of fresh air, but also hard to understand. He gives good feedback on assignments.
Im sure Professor Carney is a good guy, but hes pretty condescending. Especially if you ask dumb questions or raise your hand if you dont understand something. Other than that its an easy class. A couple essays and reading. I wouldnt take him again though.
Professor Carney is a brilliant man and I really respect him as a professor. This class was difficult but worth it. He grades everything except the final on a pass/fail basis so that is stressful, but he always gives excellent feedback and made an effort to engage despite the online format. You have to work hard but I loved the class and him!
Professor Carneys honors class is about dystopias. His lectures and insights makes it a very fun, engaging class. You will have to read books, but if you skip one or two, spark notes will save you. One group project, one final, and some discussions. Attendance is not mandatory. Highly recommend this class.
The most involved professor I have ever had. He actively participates in the discussions, responding to every single students comment. I had a situation come up where I was late on an assignment and he was totally caring and cleared it up. Cares about his students and wants them to grow and succeed. A genuine guy, very passionate about English.
Professor Carney's online Eng 1010 course was awesome. The hardest bit for me was understanding the structure of his class because he has the whole thing under the Canvas 'Syllabus' tab. The class is focused entirely on the 4 essays you turn in at the end of the semester. My first essay was a disaster and he gave me great, constructive feedback.
He makes his expectations clear and holds you to them. Just do the simple things he asks, and you will fairly easily succeed, with good feedback to boot.
I'm a bad writer, my midterm was sub-par. Prof Carney gave it back to me with feedback, and allowed me to redo it. With his help I finished the class with an A. I took this class in 2008 and he made enough of an impact that still remember his name and the experience today. I happened to be on RMP rating other current professors and thought of him.
I felt like Dr. Carney was incredibly fake. I don't think he really cares about his students. His online course was unnecessarily difficult to navigate. If you want an easier Modern American Lit class, take him, but if you want to feel involved and have a professor who genuinely cares about you, don't take him.
This class was pretty straight forward. You read a lot, listen to Carney' little transcripts going over the pieces or talking about the author, & then write responses/essays. The final had a creative alternative I LOVED. My only complaint is I'm not sure I learned as much as I wish I could've had it been in person, but I enjoyed the easy A!
Hands down one of the best English teachers I've ever had. And I'm a Literature major, so that's a high bar. His Canvas page was very accessible. Each lecture was available in audio or printed form. Homework helps you learn the material but is never "too much". You never feel like it's "busy work". He loves the subject he teaches, and it SHOWS.
robert carney is quite the man. his class is really easy and attendance is not mandatory. his lectures are kind of boring and when you contribute to the discussion he makes you feel less than regarding your input. it is a really easy class. definitely take for honors.
Professor Carney is super cool, and he's very passionate about his subject. It's a very light workload, and I actually wish that we could have learned more, but overall it was a well-organized class. We read a good handful of authors and then did a discussion post (and responded to each others posts) roughly every week or so.
Witty professor, in-class discussions with peers regarding the different readings each week. Attendance isn't mandatory but is helpful to come into class to listen to what others have to say. Assignments done in discussion boards to interact w/ peers. There a group project and a final. Sometimes felt like a lot of reading but managed through.
I took his class in 2015 so it's been a while, but I really feel like I learned a lot. The class was very engaging and fun. I'd definitely take a class from him again.
Dr. Carney was great. I would definitely take a class from him again. He only gives around seven assignments and has discussions every week. He is involved in discussions and gives great feedback. We read a lot of great dystopian novels and I genuinely learned a lot. Highly recommend his class.
At first, the class seemed difficult and I really did not like Professor Carney but as the course went on it got easier and I began to see how much my writing was improving because of him. He is super easy to work with and gives incredible feedback.
Professor Carney is so wonderful -- I took him twice and wasn't disappointed! He allows a lot of time to read the given material, provides engaging assignments (writing your own play acts, monologues, etc), encourages discussions, and even contributes to discussions. He is also a fairly lenient grader, but definitely remember to put forth effort!
Fantastic class! Fair warning, he takes some getting used to. Very, very few guidelines for when readings were due, and comes off a little strong and anti-tech. However, encyclopedic knowledge of literally everything, deep insights, and good feedback made the class. In class attendance was a bonus, and grading easy. Totally worth it.
Professor Carney's honors class is engaging with interesting discussions. Attendance helps, but you can still do well by reading the material and using resources like Unstuck study and Sparknotes. Manageable workload overall.
He was ok, but his expectations weren't always clear. For the short paper, he gave us examples, but when I wrote about one author (exactly like the example did) he docked me and said that he wanted us to talk about more than one... And his assignments were ALL due at 6 p.m.?? That timing, instead of 11:59, made my life harder than it needed to be.
