As much as I DESPISE geology, Brother Clayton is great. He's very enthusiastic about rocks, and he always keeps it interesting. He's always there for questions, and he has a GREAT sense of humor!

He is a great teacher and is understanding to the fact that Geology is not the most exciting subject for everyone. He keeps it interesting and is extremely helpful! He will go out of his way so that you can obtain the grade you wish to.
Fantastic teacher!
good. tests really hard, but he makes it sort of interesting because he is very enthusiatic about the subject.
very informative
Great Teacher!

His classes can be pretty dull but he's very smart and you can really learn a lot from him
I love this class! Brother Clayton is fantastic! Before this class I never thought about Geology, but now it'll be my major! Great teacher!
He's a great teacher, just don't take the class early in the morning, it was hard for me to stay awake.
I liked Bro. clayton's class, although because it was in the morning I had a hard time staying awake. He enjoys what he teaches and you can definitely tell that he does. I learned a lot from the class and I don't think I'll be able to look at the geology of the landscape the same again
Brother Clayton is the shiz! I took an 8 am class from him, and although I wasn't quite awake, the notes that I took from his slideshows helped me to get the info into my brain for the tests! He tells awesome jokes too, like, "I don't think the Rio Grande is so Grand. I call it the Rio-Dinky." Not to mention his harry potter jokes. :)
He is so passionate about Geology and his passion was contagious. Never cared too much about Geo-just took it for my major, but wish I had to take more classes from him! I learned a ton! You ROCK! He cares about each one of his students-First professor to ever stand in a lecture and call each student by name!
I loved this class and it almost made me change my major. Bro Clayton made it realy interesting and he knew his stuff. He did extra things as well that i dont think other teachers would do. Make it real so you can tell others about it and sound smart. It was a great class, one of my favorites on campus
Class was interesting and the instructor made it interesting. The information taught in the class is done so in a way that makes it fun to learn and makes you want to learn more. Great class and instructor.
This was a great class. Brother Clayton is a good teacher and will help you learn alot. You write alot of papers but it was a good class. show up and take notes and youll do fine.
He is one of the smartest guys I have ever met!!!! You'll learn so much from the class! You have to remember a lot of what he says in class discussions-i thought the tests were tough! Keep up with the quizzes & that'll help a lot!
Bro. Clayton has a fun and exciting personality. I took natural disasters from him and learned a ton. The work load is a little time consuming at times, but not to hard. Also their is a lot of group work. I have already recommended his class to some of my friends who enjoy the class as well.
I learned a ton from his class, and if you take good notes you'll do fine on the exams- toward the end of the semester there's a lot of work (papers, etc.) and the online quizes are pointless and time consuming- but I learned a lot from the class! He's a great teacher!
Great teacher! He is very knowledgeable about the subject and best of all he makes you laugh. Take good notes in class and then use them to study for the test to do well. Quizzes are annoying, but you can retake them until you get a good score.
I took Brother Clayton for Geology 201(Natural Disasters)and honestly it was the most amazing class I have ever had. I loved going to class and I was almost addicted to learning because it was such a fascinating subject. He is a great teacher (very smart) and I really enjoyed the class.
Very organized instructor. Grades assignments and tests incredibly fast! He is sometimes hard to approach, but helpful once you get the guts to talk to him.
Great teacher! I really enjoyed the class and all the case studies about Natural Disasters.
Great Class! I learned a lot in this class and loved it! It is interesting and no too difficult. If you want an A you can get one easy. Take notes from the powerpoint and study those for the test. The field trip is also a lot of fun! However if you go in the fall dress super warm!
The class is really easy (most of the time.) As long as you show up and take good notes, you should be fine. Some of the online quizzes you wonder where in the world you're supposed to get the questions, but they are open book, and you can take them multiple times. He is hard to approach and ask for help though.
I was not interested in this topic at all before this class. Brother Clayton has such a passion for what he teaches which makes it easier to learn. He is very clear about what he wants done, and very willing to help you with any questions you might have.
Hard. Makes you read a lot of online reading and the readings are hard to understand at times. THERE IS NO TUTOR FOR THIS CLASS! Unless you are just wanting the tutors in the labs... but they don't help much unless you are asking for help on the exercises. LOTS OF WORK! I do not recommend taking this teacher. He doesn't help the students at all.
He is not a very helpful teacher. Can Take quizzes multiple times. Lots of group work and lots of assignments. Very picky grader.
lame class. He is super picky about assignments. The tests are kind of hard, the online quizzes are easy, can take multiple times. The google earth exercises are soooo dumb, and good luck because he has no leway for answers. The field trip is pretty fun, and Clayton is a good guy, maybe its just the class that sucks...
This class is expected to be boring. He actually kept things interesting, and was enthusiastic. He pretty much refuses to help on homework. The exercises are terrible, the worksheets are even worse. The field trip is fun though, and attendance isn't mandatory which is a plus. I guess if you have to take it, take it from him, it wasn't THAT bad...
Very interesting class. Large number of group projects. Many exercises in which he grades very oddly and does not offer any assistance or clarification with. Grades seemes a joke with him. But Brother Clayton really does know about natural disasters, especially in the southeastern Idaho area.
Great teacher. really gets into what he is teaching and tries very hard to make it interesting and exciting.
I loved this class! Brother Clayton and his "nerdness" I call it cracked me up! Some friends and I signed up together and toughed out the block class. Not too hard, just study for the tests. Great teacher though! Still remember so much and learned so much from this class!
Really easy class. He had a test review for every exam in which he basically gave you 90% of the answers. Take good notes and keep up with the assignments and you'll do awesome. Also had a field trip which was awesome. I learned a bunch in this class and would recommend it. It also was a block class so it moved fast but really wasn't to bad.
Professor Clayton gives a lot of useless assignments that take hours to complete and gives little to no assistance in them. I had a problem finding a space to write on in his confusing Adobe document. When I asked him about it he brushed me off with a blunt, "There's got to be something there!" He really made science boring and dull.
He refuses to help students. He is not willing to fix grades (even if deserved). He is arrogant. The assignments are ridiculous and he grades very harshly. no understanding for unusual circumstances. Doesn't prepare you for exams very well. If you have to take a science class, take it online NOT from him! He doesn't want students to succeed.
Very good teacher. If you do the reading thoroughly and do all assignments, you will do fine. Exams were easy if you did readings and assignments. Many people don't like him because they didn't like to read and didn't try to figure things out themselves. They wanted to be spoon fed. It is college and if you treat it that way, it's a great class.
Bro. Clayton is really enthusiastic about the subjects he teaches. This makes his lectures more engaging, but at the same time he gives out more work. Discussion boards are mandatory, and irritable. Many assignments feel like busy work. Despite this, you should take Natural Disasters from Bro. Clayton. He's a great professor.
Group projects but it is so simple. Lots of busy work but again its easy. Very laid back teacher with good insight, If you don't pass this class its your own fault. Test are clear, you just have to know how to study for them.
I took him for Natural Disasters and it was awful. He doesn't announce exams until the day they close and doesn't set up notifications on I-learn. there is no consistency with homework due dates. he doesn't announce quizzes, and makes them due early in the morning so once you figure out there's one due it's too late. He tests on untaught material.
Absolute ignorant professor. He wants you to know specific information on tests that he never even lectured on or isn't in the text. He never answers questions about what might be on the test or what to study. Which for his class is ridiculous considering the amount of info he covers. I wish I knew all of this beforehand. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS! SMH
Brother Clayton is pretty easy. His tests aren't hard if you simply study the powerpoints and pay special attention to the case studies. I never got anything below a 90 on a test. The negative note about him is that he takes it personally when people leave his class early. I learned a lot from his class--he is very knowledgeable. Some extra credit.
He is very enthusiastic about his subject. In general he's a good teacher. However, he can be very unprofessional at times. I had a some real problems with this professor. I took his class as a first block class. It was a lot of work each week this way, but it was manageable. As a regular class I imagine it would be quite easy.
Brother Clayton means well, he is very knowledgeable, that's why it was sad to see that every lesson he would just read off powerpoints that were available in I-learn. He never engages the class with questions and even on some occasions made racial slurs about Asians... He doesn't believe in study guides either, so you're left in the dark for exams
Brother Clayton is a horrible teacher! He no longer gives you study guides, and there is no test review,so with the first test you are completely blind and on your own to figure out how he writes the tests and what he is going to test you on. Some of the material on the tests is not in the lectures or the readings. Do not take this class!
Brother Clayton is an alright teacher. He has a lot of knowledge on the subject, but when he lectures he just reads off the slides he has made. The slides are on I-learn to study so it'd be nice if he would teach stuff on the exams. There is no review so tests are hard to study for. You have to do 2 class presentations in a group of 2-4
I'll be straight up, 2 Nephi 9:28 describes him pretty well. There are times when he goes directly against the doctrine of the church, and then says "there's no official statement on it." Needs to read the church institute manuals (Old Testament and POGP) badly. That aside, class is alright, he knows a lot, but is a bit unorganized.
Brother Clayton is good guy. He tries his best to keep class interesting. However, BE WARNED that getting an A is difficult. You will lose points for things that are not even on the rubrics. Walking into the testing center is a guessing game as what he teaches is only about 30% of the test (STUDY THE CASE STUDIES!!) The final was unfair.
Bro Clayton tries to be funny and the class is interesting but good luck trying to do the tests. He doesn't give study guides because he feels that they "Don't help you" So basically if you love memorizing every detail in class this is the course for you.
He is very knowledgeable about the course and he tries to be funny, but I honestly thought there was too much busy work. A lot of the busy work is probably how the course is designed, so it's more the outline of the course that needs change over anything. I didn't get much from this course and felt ill prepared for the tests.
Dr. Clayton does not give study guides of any sort, yet assigns a lot of reading and puts obscure/ambiguous questions on the exams. He is also a harsh grader and shows little compassion when discussing grades with those who go to him in private - even when he's made a mistake. Finally most of the homework is insultingly "busy" and of little help.
Not fun to be around. His was the only class I didnt enjoy going to so I would always skip. Felt like I couldve gotten an A easily I just didnt do the assignment because they didnt seem worth it to me. Also, a ton of homework every week that was very confusing and hard to understand that I ended up using google most of the time.
Bro. Clayton is a nice guy, and he knows what he is teaching. But his class can get really boring. You'll have to put a good amount of time in for HW as you have a weekly disaster report and disaster insight weekly, quizzes and labs bi-weekly, tests about every three weeks, and 2 case studies during the semester. Good teacher, but honestly just ok.
I really enjoyed this class. Brother Clayton is passionate about what he teaches. I personally would take this class again.
In my first semester at BYU Idaho, I arrived a week late and every other professor was willing to let me turn in week 1 and week 2 work when I arrived to catch up. Professor Clayton was the only professor who didnt let me. I wouldve had to get a 100% for the rest of the semester to scratch the surface for a B grade. Inconsiderate.
He has everything due at 9 am on mondays usually. He expects you to know when things are due when he said monday and Canvas says something other than him. If you dont have it done he expects you to know that he said it even if you missed class. You the students teach the class making the tests way harder than they need to be.
Prepare for lecture every class, and no practical learning or guidance. That's normally fine, but not when he administers tests as often and as difficult as he When we ask him for guidance on study, he'll tell you to go to the book. It's an insane amount of memorization he expects, because the book covers a LOT. Average CLASS test grades: low 70's
Worst professor I've had. I only unmuted my mic once in class to present a group project. Other than that, every class is an hour long lecture. He has a weird vendetta against study guides, saying that there are studies showing they're ineffective (there aren't). Class average on tests was a C. Assignments tedious and unhelpful. Skip this professor
Likes to talk about his vacations. Goes over what you already read in the textbook. Doesnt give guidance on how to prepare for his tests.
Brother Clayton is an alright professor. He definitely knows what he's talking about in his field of study. He likes to interrupt student presentations to make additional comments. He expects that each student reads an entire chapter of the textbook every week. His lessons are just going over the material super fast, assuming that you read the text
Bro. Clayton is a brilliant guy. Definitely an expert. But he's the kind of guy who doesn't really care about students. He's smart but almost seems arrogant sometimes. The tests are complicated, and you have to memorize a lot. The guided labs seem pointless and he doesn't provide reviews in class (says they don't actually help students).
Brother Clayton is a great geologist, but not a great teacher. He doesn't seem to care about the students, only delivering the information. He interrupts class presentations to add his own thoughts, which kind of defeats the point of the students doing it. He expects you to read an entire chapter of material in a week. The class is just lectures.
From reading reviews, he is fine in Natural Disasters, this is because the man himself is a natural disaster. He is very arrogant and condescending towards students. He thinks that his own math skills are better than ArcGIS because he is smarter than a computer. He was an expert in his field, but is outdated now. Avoid any of his classes.
I have TA'ed for him and taken his classes: Interrupts student presentations, incredibly condescending to students, doesn't let you eat in class, no study guides, not helpful to students with disabilities, lectures don't prioritize (or explain) what you need to know, and some of his science is 20 yrs out of date. Spend lots of time with your TA's.
I earned an A- in Canvas, but at the end of the semester my transcript showed a B+. I reached out for him to correct this and he told me, "Canvas doesn't grade right so I just use my own calculator in Excel". This was nowhere in his syllabus. He did the same thing to my roommate that took natural disasters. All his bad reviews are true. Beware.
Bro. Clayton is great, I took his Natural Disasters course. I don't understand people here are upset about him adding to student group presentations - some of ya'll clearly show you didn't do adequate, or accurate research on your topic, so don't be surprised if you get corrected by the professor. We're here to learn.
He is the WORST teacher at BYUI. He is so disrespectful to his students by talking through their entire presentations. He just likes to hear himself talk. He never answers your questions and just say its in the text, but does not consider that questions are asked due to confusion. AVOID AT ALL COSTS. He himself is a natural disaster.
Many group projects
This professor has all the passion but none of the compassion. He is passionate about geology and has some interesting stories, but is trying to infuse that passion ineffectively. He gives too much homework and gives obscure tests. He has students do case studies which can be interesting, but he interjects a little too much. DO NOT take this class.
Dr. Clayton comes off a little hard and gruf, but if you give him a chance, he is just like a dad. People are quick to judge him but he is very knowledgeable and is willing to work with you.
This professor assigns excessive busywork and provides no study guides. They're demeaning and indifferent to students, interrupting presentations for minor corrections. While passionate about natural disasters, their teaching style is lacking. After an eight-hour field trip, got a 0 because their TA lost my form, and the professor didn't care.
Very smart and will always help
After reaching out for help from the teacher for a difficulty beyond my control; I was met with very immature, off put, and dismissive behavior. I was very dissatisfied with the lack of maturity from a BYUI teacher.
Do not take natural disasters from him. grades unfairly, w/o rubric, goes off his own opinion if he thinks you did it right. lectures the whole class, goes on tangents of random stuff, don't know what to actually take notes on for test. Every time I reached out for help, gave me a short one sentence answer that I can find answers in the assign.
To pass, learn and memorize all the facts on your own time. His lectures are useless, there are no study guides or preparation materials. No electronics are allowed in the class, even for note taking purposes (he does not allow recording or photos). The test questions are vague and sometimes inaccurate. Take this course from someone else.
Brother Clayton is a very passionate guy about geology, but his way of teaching sucks. His class is extremely lecture and group-project-heavy. His lectures are vague and the group projects are pointless. If you want to pass, memorize the PowerPoint presentations and vocabulary. He doesn't believe in study guides either so get ready to study.
This professor really frustrates me. This class should be a lot of fun, but he gives so many assignments that feel like a lot more work then they should be, that I can't enjoy it. He is way to harsh criteria for his grading. He doesn't "believe in" study guides so be aware of that. The homework load is ridiculous. Avoid his classes if you can.
I have no passion for what he taught, which does not help, but I found Brother Clayton super boring. He talks, and talks, and talks. There is a lot of work outside of class and it is just busy work. Then there are also two group presentations you have to do. I also found him hard to talk to and interrupts your thoughts (even while presenting)
There was way to much homework. We never talked about the gospel and there was a lot expected of us with no instructions. When he made a mistake, he would blame us for it. He never answered questions and was disrespectful. I'm a strait A student, and I had a hard time passing the class. Prepare for a bad semester if you take a class from him.
Brother Clayton mainly teaches through lectures and assigns quite a few group projects. He is very passionate about what he teaches and loves telling geology-related jokes. He made it easy to meet with him outside of class and gives great advice. His note taking policy really helps students focus and learn the material. He's very knowledgable.
He did not teach. I went to class and he put the online textbook on a slide. He didn't teach anything. Everything I learned I learned from the textbook on my own time. Tests were hard. Really boring and not a great class. He doesn't seem to care about his students.
Ridiculous workload. Two times throughout the semester, you are required to complete a case study AND all other weekly homework, which includes a report of at least 3 pages, a group presentation, a very extensive case study that takes multiple hours to complete, and two separate one-page reports, all due on the same day. Boring, long lectures.
Worst class experience I've had at BYUI. Longwinded lectures, didn't know what material to study because he also didn't make study guides, I put so many hours into studying just to get a B-, which isn't bad but it was my hardest class for no reason, and it was only an elective for my GE. It was not worth it.
