Professor Foels is not an easy. He doesn't give feedback for ANYTHING and always goes on tangents on what he doesn't like in life and stuff that no one but him cares about. He says that everything you learned outside of his class is "wrong". Lectures are really boring and no power points. I wouldn't recommend him to anyone. unless you want to fail
This class is incredibly hard. They say general psychology is easy but not with this professor. He seems to try his best but still, stay away.
He's incredibly opinionated and full of it. He often assumes that all the people in class are bigots and lectures in that direction. He denounces random things that everybody learned in the past and claims he's the only one who can teach it properly. His assignments have no guidelines and no grades are posted. Don't take please.
he takes getting used to because he pushes you to do your best and his teaching style is different than most, but he really cares about how you do and is very understanding and helpful when you reach to him outside of the classroom. even in big lectures he likes to learn peoples names and get their input. he makes you think in a new way
He goes over one or two vocab words each class and then has exams for 50-60 vocab words within 2-3 weeks. Its very hard to concentrate in class because he goes off topic a lot. HW is due at the end of every class. Tests are vocab heavy. Must READ THE BOOK. Its very frustrating because he does not tell us what topics are important for exams.
Strict on cell phones but his class isnt that bad if you put in effort. Theres a lot of memorization required for the vocab. Class is discussion based and the stuff he talks about during the discussion ends up on the exams . So although he doesnt take attendance, it is important to show up. Be prepared to read a lot
Not sure where all the hate is coming from. Foels is a decent guy. Weekly mini assignments that took me 5 minutes each. Learn the terms and you'll do great. If you can memorize terms that have logical names then you'll have no problem. Im no genius, didn't put much effort in, and am doing great. First exam is tough but everyone gets better evntuly
Amazing teacher but do NOT take his class if you don't like unstructured classes. No structure whatsoever lectures are essentially an open discussion so unless you're really confident take someone that just posts the presentations online.
foels is a nice guy. he boosted my final grade because I was struggling but made an improvement, which was really nice. he's definitely tough but he's great at helping you. tests are intense.
He is so hard man, I feel like he does care about his students but definitely not about their GPA lol. I thought general psych would be a decently easy class but his class was the complete opposite. Most difficult class I've taken at Rutgers so far. Lectures are pointless because they have nothing to do with the tests.
No Any Powerpoint. No Any Guideline for tests. You will never know what will show in the test.
This man is one of the best, most interesting, hilarious professors I've ever had. He's genuinely a good person who will make the effort to get to know your name and if you show up to lecture, you'll pass no problem. He makes the material interesting and if you like science, you won't be bored by this class.
I took gen psych and am taking prej/confl. now. Foels is a brilliant, funny guy, makes the material interesting, and has a unique unstructured teaching style. Best lecturer I've had. The class isn't hard but if you expect to sleep through lectures and get an easy A he's not the guy for you. Read the book & participate in lecture and you'll be fine.
This professor is highkey the worst because he doesn't the students anything but expects them to be experts on the exams. He does this thing with vocab from the textbook which is lowkey really stupid because the textbook isn't even on the test. The tests are super heavy but the only way I got an A is because I got help from other professor's notes.
If you want a class that challenges you, gets you to think, see the world in a new way, and achieve a life-long mentor, take this class. Foels is perhaps the best professor I have ever had, and yes his class is difficult, but not impossible if you put in the work. I can see why GenPsych (freshman) would find him tough, take if you want to LEARN
I'm one of those shy kids who never participates in class. I regret it so much. Honestly, Rob Foels is the best professor I've had at Rutgers. I actually learned, and took away a lot from the class that will follow me through my whole life. I really can't fathom why he doesn't have a 5 star rating from everyone. He's amazing.
I dreaded going to class. He is snarky, very opinionated, and can be rude if you say an opinion he doesn't like. Exams are extremely tricky and the questions are worded awfully. Make sure you know every single term in the textbook chapters because much of the exams are terms not covered in class. Gives random pop quizzes. Final exam is optional.
His teaching methods are untraditional- you need you to understand the concepts in depth. Be able to apply them to different scenarios and make connections between them for exams. This isn't one of those psych classes where you can skip and do well - you have to be continually engaged in lecture. But it's the most interesting class I've ever taken.
the most interesting class I have ever taken. Unlike other professors, he understands that freshmen are still adjusting to the class, each exam has a higher weightage as the semester goes on. Untraditional style of teaching, we each got a different book and compared definitions, but I learned a lot about why we act the way we act.
Professor Foels is one of the most interesting professors I've had the pleasure of studying under at Rutgers. As previous reviews said, his teaching methods are not "normal". There are no powerpoints. Rather, if you read the textbook and are engaged throughout the lecture, you will find his class very enjoyable and his tests very, very reasonable.
I enjoyed his class a lot, sure he didn't have any ppts or notes but literally all the tests were based on the book so you just have to actually study and read it. It's definitely a class you have to put in effort and care but I really enjoyed his free flowing lectures and learned a lot. A very interesting and nice professor.
Rob is an amazing professor. His style of teaching is weird to get used to at first, but is really helpful and fair once you understand it. You can tell he really cares about what he is teaching and wants every person to do well. His classes are fun and interesting; I always looked forward to going.
Phenomenal class, phenomenal educator. 100% invested in his students and subject matter. There are 5 pop quizzes, and the exams are DEFINITELY do-able. Incredibly interesting/relevant topics covered. Not to be dramatic, but taking his class made me a better human being.
His approach to teaching is not the typical Ill read off the slides while you take notes. Grades are based on short exams, short papers, and short pop quizzes assessing your understanding of the terms within the textbook. He encourages student discourse, which helped me understand the concepts at a more personal level. I left the class inspired!
Rob is a great professor who teaches material with actual and applicable importance. This was the most inspiring class I've ever taken but also one of the most difficult. Know the terms and participate in class, the combination of the aforementioned will put you on a friendly basis which can make a big difference in understanding the material.
Foels is the man. It took me multiple classes to warm up to him, but after, I realized he was different from any other professor I've had in a very good way. GO TO CLASS, and participate! His exams are more based on class discussion than notes or definitions, participation in his class makes it very worth going, and lets you get to know a great guy
I loved him when I had him for gen psych, and I'm taking him again for Prej/conflict. He's an awesome professor & he doesn't use powerpoints. He's engaging and wants students to really engage and understand the material. I did poorly on the first exam, but ended up getting A's on the rest of the exams. Just read and pay attention to lectures.
I found Prejudice & Conflict to be extremely disappointing. The material presented both in class and in the textbook was often not backed by credible scientific evidence, and the overall tone of the class was postmodernist and dogmatic. As a liberal myself, I am disappointed that this is what liberal thinking has frequently come to.
I had him for Gen Psych and decided to retake him again for the Prej class and honestly can say he is the best professor Rutgers has to offer. You can tell he actually cares about students learning rather than memorizing material. Makes class interesting and easily understandable.
At first I was a little skeptical of his teaching patterns but by the end of the semester I was thoroughly enjoying the class. He has unique ways about teaching the material but I truly learned a lot!
Professor Foels became my favorite professor at Rutgers this past semester. His teaching style was completely different as he does not use any form of technology, but after having him, I believe all teachers should strive to copy his teaching style. He really cared about his students and wants everyone to succeed. 10/10 recommend!
He's the best professor I've ever had by a large margin. His Prejudice & Conflict class changed the way I view the world for the better. He has an unconventional teaching style but it helps you to become a better student. Make sure to do the readings before class and pay attention and you'll be fine! Highly recommend.
Before taking this class just know a 92 gets you an A.. also about 20% of students get a D or an F. I just found this class unnecessarily difficult and heavily vocab based. If vocab and no power points is your thing, go for it. otherwise, AVOID.
The class is not necessarily hard but his personality is awful. Very condescending and acts like some sort of educational messiah. I was very disappointed in his "teaching" method. The class consisted of aimlessly going over vocab with a couple analogies and examples. Very subpar, especially in the light he holds himself in. Do not take.
Condescending and arrogant, I was very displeased with his class. Was constantly unprepared and preached his dogmatic views on everyone. All you do in class is go over vocab, you really teach yourself the work. Avoid.
very different teaching method that is not fit for this class. its insanely vocab heavy & you read full chapters(40+ pages) for each lectures. no laptops, no ppts & u have to handwrite all notes. he thinks his method of teaching is god sent but it hindered learning, esp in this level of a class. unless u like this sort of learning i would avoid
Dogmatic and condescending, Foels is the kind of professor where he thinks he's amazing even though he's second rate. Class consists of going over vocab that you learned yourself. He always showed up unprepared. His handling of the course due to COVID was awful and he did not prepare for it at all; his classes suffered for it.
Not worth going to class, his lectures are not even really lectures. Sees technology as a hinderance to education while ignoring its benefits. Barely communicated during COVID and left the class scrambling to finish a project which he gave almost no guidance on with the guise of it forcing us to be "creative". Avoid if possible, he shouldn't teach.
Best professor I've ever had. Taught me more about systematic racism than I've learned in my entire public school education career. Lectures are discussion based- no slides, read the chapters and you'll get an A.
Tries too hard to come off as "different" but his teaching style sucks. I took this class knowing it would not be and easy A but I was hoping to learn something. All I learned was that he does not know how to teach. The class was interesting but hard before COVID, but after COVID? i never wanted to drop a class faster. He is very hard to please.
Arrogant and disorganized, he's the kind of professor where he is always right no matter what. Class was frequently downgraded into him ranting about useless information and trying to "teach" about the real world. It's a joke coming from someone as disconnected with him.
if you have the opportunity, take him!! he's the best professor I've ever had. this class is not an easy A but you will learn things that you'll use in your everyday lives. this class is amazing, and his teaching style is unique but a great way to learn
I was a little scared to take Prof Foels after reading the bad reviews, but he's just a weird guy. He wasn't very responsive to my section or clear about directions initially, but once you get the hang of it and understand what he's looking for it's very manageable. Keep up with the lectures and listen to his feedback and your grade should go up.
Rob is the best professor I've had so far. Genuinely a great guy. You need to do the reading before class - the lecture is basically a discussion of the reading. If you participate in class and Rob gets to know your name, he'll be more than happy to help you out if you're between two letter grades. I recommend going to office hours.
He seems like he would've been a great prof to have in person. His lectures are pretty humorous, though through emails and stuff he can sound kind of rude. I think he really just wants the best for college students what with his reality slaps or whatever. Watch his lectures though or you'll probably have a hard time passing.
See all the reviews that speak of him highly? I guarantee he wrote those himself. He is condescending, arrogant and out of touch with teaching which is ironic because that's what he "studies". Avoid at all costs.
one of my favorite professors. he is really knowledgable. his class is tricky but he adds humor into the course and into the exams.
Took him for honors gen psych. Even online, lectures were engaging and interesting. He can come off as rude and arrogant, but if you're engaged in the class you'll really learn. He's slow with grades and sometimes hard to reach by email. Overall really enjoyed the class. Not an easy A, but if you put the effort in and take notes you'll be fine
He is lively and interactive, BUT his class had to be the most difficult university class I have taken. You need to be on top of your game and ready to put in some intense effort if you want an A or B. Do not underestimate how writing intensive the final paper, will be. If you don't want to put the effort in, don't take this class. I
Too much assignments and grades badly. Gives assignments that are worth more than ten thousand points and doesnt accurately grade. Do not recommend.
Professor Foels is one of the best professors Ive ever had! I believe he has mixed reviews because hes not necessarily an easy A but he makes class incredibly interesting, cares deeply about students, and doesnt waste your time. I think everyone should take social psych with him!! go to class and do the terms and youll be totally fine!
One of my favorite professors ive met. Foels is a strictly anti-tech teacher. He rarely ever answers email, so talk to him in class. I honestly found his no-device lectures to be a lot more personal and beneficial. Definitely funny, and he'll notice if you participate. He reminds me of the teacher from Dead Poet Society. Highly recommend, honestly.
Although he can come off as rude and abrupt, his lectures are very engaging and I enjoyed the class. He doesn't allow any technology, but it helped me a lot learn better. My only critique is that he doesn't really offer individual feedback so it can be hard to tell what you need to improve upon to do better. I enjoyed his sense of humor.
Walked into his class worried after some bad reviews and instead found his class to be the one I enjoyed the most! Everything in the class comes from apa dict of psych and his lecture, so go to class and take dedicated notes and you'll do fine. He also answers your questions, so don't be afraid to ask!!!
Very casual class driven by student-sponsored questions. Vocab due each class period, a consistent workload. No technology, nada in his classroom. Very odd but fascinating sense of humor. No formal textbook so use any, or the internet. ASK QUESTIONS!!
We had a problem with his old grader, but he himself was great and explained things well.
Just had him for Intro to Psych and taking him again. His T.A. was HARD, but he is great. He does not allow electronics, and may seem strict or scary at first, but he is an INCREDIBLE teacher. His class is him talking, and people voluntarily raise their hand and ask questions. I love his tests (very fair) and he cares for students. I learned a lot
Professor Foels is probably one of the most insufferable profs I've ever had at Rutgers - I eventually just stopped going to class because I got tired of listening to him go on rants about literally everything. Suuuuuuper condescending and has a superiority complex that made it impossible to learn anything. I would suggest avoiding him.
Amazing professor. No technology allowed in class but it makes you a better person (will allow writing on tablets). Incredible inspirational man. Makes sure everyone grows as a person throughout the course. Very fulfilling if you put in the right work and attend lecture. HIGHLY recommend, kind of professor that will literally change your life.
Absolutle worst proffessor and class I've ever taken. There is NO feedback. You do not know your grade until you see it published after the final (and do not bother emailing since he will ignore you.) His lectures are more about his life and cars then the material. Save yourself!! I did well in his course and I am still telling you it was AWFUL.
Great teacher! Would recommend
to keep things short, do not take any classes with professor foels. the worst professor I have ever had. I do not think any professor could be worse than him.
Grading is disorganized. He creates spreadsheets for students to see grades. Why not just put it on canvas? List of terms and some articles before class discussion. Random pop quizzes. Class is interesting. Online exams. Easy to get an A.
He wastes a lot of class time ranting about his own ideologies and dislikes. Shows no regard for student time and often shows up late. His attitude and personality is very unprofessional, his anger management is very lacking. I've heard that the work is easy, but he makes the classroom environment insufferable and uncomfortable.
He was incredibly unhelpful and would not answer simple questions. He often could not that on topic and would go off on rants about how he thinks his brother is a white supremacist and how he hates children. He often brought up topics of religion and how he doesn't believe in it and tried to come off "woke". I learned absolutely nothing from him.
He emphasizes this himself, but you're going to be responsible for everything you do in this class: finding your own textbook to go by, studying, etc. He's a really intelligent guy, and he really cares about you, but you have to make the initiative to do well or to reach out to him if you aren't. He also doesn't permit any technology during class.
Foels is an interesting person , being intelligent and nice to talk to .he's very educated so 1 on 1 you certainly could learn a lot !However , this semester was mainly a lot of random tangents he would go off on , a disorganized excel sheet he used for grading and heavy confusion going into exams .grading is curved up (eg; 82=B) .wouldn't take aga
Very different from anything else you would see. He puts a lot of emphasis on self-driven learning, and will not hold your hand through the class. Learning methods is unlike anything you'll experience at Rutgers, so I recommend taking him. Class itself is relatively straightforward, and a positive experience overall.
Professor Foels is among the best professors I've had at Rutgers. He does not use lecture slides; instead, he fosters open conversations that cover course content. Prof. Foels is big into pedagogy, so he teaches his students effective ways to learn. He has a hands-off style that promotes success. He also wears sandals. He's cool. Highly recommend.
Dr. Foels definitely has a unique teaching style that isn't for everyone. There are no lecture slides, and almost nothing is posted online. No technology allowed. Most classes there are quizzes around a set of vocab words, but they are not graded. All three tests are online. There are also APA briefs assigned, but they are not explained well.
His teaching style is not for everyone, and personally I both liked and disliked aspects of his teaching. Some lectures felt like complete wastes of time because they were off topic. However, some of the lectures did help me learn. The exams were not too difficult and as long as you complete the homework, the work is reasonable.
his teaching method isn't for everyone but i loved it. he honestly made me look forward to class some days, and the exams were easy and straightforward to what he taught. no technology allowed though, and if you miss a class he doesn't post any material online. imo though just focusing on the vocab list he posts is enough to get through the class
I've never dropped a class before, but I couldn't stand this class. He has a different teaching method that was not my style. You can't use devices to take notes, there are no rubrics, he doesn't submit grades until the end of the semester, and he doesn't provide feedback. He wants you to "own the knowledge" without caring about grades.
The professor was really funny and kept lectures entertaining.
His teaching style isn't for everyone, but I loved learning from him. He really makes you want to go to class and explore ideas, which helped me get a good grade for this class. I've taken two courses with him so far, and I hope to take another. Participation matters and is the foundation for discussion in this class.
Lecturing is fine and you do learn a lot, this mans disdain for technology actually makes the class lag behind in terms of efficacy. He puts your exam grades on a google sheet and makes you search for your grade using your ruid instead of putting a grade in canvas or gradescope. Its unbearable because of his refusal to adapt to the times.
Favorite class ever. He runs class like a big conversation, very participation based. Daunting bc you have to find your own textbook and no material/content provided by him except research, but you learn so much but only if you attend class. He's also hilariously blunt and entertaining.
This professor was terrible. I let him know I was having financial difficulties getting to class and he dared to tell me to drop out of school and return when I could afford it!!! He did nothing for me when I came to him the last week of classes and complained that I had missed everything!!!
If you don't like this professor it's because you don't like to do school work or learn anything worth of value. He completely changed me as a student, and I am way better because of the skills I needed to get an A in his class.
This class was horrible. He was extremely rude and showed no compassion for his students. I went to him for help and he just stared at me and didn't help. Wore sandles every single day and it was uncomfortable looking at his toes. Respectfully, he made me want to drop out of this school. Would not recommend him to anyone.
He is the rudest prof i have ever met in my life
His lectures were really fun to attend, even if you didn't raise your hand to speak. He's really accommodating if you email him about a conflict before the deadline passes. But if you email him that you missed an assignment after the deadline he's really scary to deal with. Don't miss deadlines, email him beforehand, you'll be fine.
Nice guy, but not a good teacher at all. He often rambles on all class about random stuff not even related to topics we are learning in class, he only writes down terms for the chapter, and the rest we basically have to figure out on our own. He is a tough grader, does not give feedback, and vaguely explains directions for assignments.
Please, I beg you, do not take this guy's class if you value your mental well-being in any way, shape, or form. He's extremely rude, pretentious, and unreachable at all times without getting an earful about how you should already know about whatever you're asking. In addition to that, he only rants all lecture about other topics -never psych. Avoid
Have you ever wanted to meet Helen Keller? If so, take this class and meet her yourself. You will not be heard or seen.Vague responses and commentary on papers. When asking questions, answers with passive aggressive comments accusing you of not attending class. Grades without rubric and last minute after official class is over. Would not recommend!
Do not take a class with Rob. Unprofessional and rude. He rambles on and on during class and makes it so unbearable. He doesn't give any instructions or rubric for any assignments. Leaves vague comments on papers like "plagiarism." His grading system is a mess. Does not put grades in, you must calculate it yourself. Worst professor I've ever had.
Very down to earth and wise. I can understand why he is divisive, but his discussion-based lectures worked really well for me, and the assignments were easy and genuinely made me learn the information, not just memorize it short-term. If you love psych, take his classes.
