Very UNhelpful! Picks favorites! JERK!
hard but explains well
mean, not very helpful at all
Decent prof, but exams can be kinda rough at times.
Although chemistry at 7:45 in the morning is not my favorite thing, he's a good teacher and willing to give you extra help if you need it. Made a hard subject understandable.
Very unwilling to help makes students feel stupid
tough professor, final is a all M/C and kills ya!
OK teacher, kinda comes to his senses and re-explains things when he realizes everyone is clueless. It may help to have him for both lab and lecture.
Super nice and awesome if you have him for lab too. He really gets to know his students which is pretty impressive in a lecture setting.
Possibly favors his lab students. Normal difficulty for a chem course. Not terribly helpful. Still, he does a pretty good job teaching the material. Decent prof overall.
very good prof, explains things well and is extremely willing to help and get to know students.
Mean, doesn't make it easy to come to him for help his multiple questions will kill you. doesn't give very many examples. Makes me want to drop out of school
Not a bad teacher, but hard tests. His lectures are helpful b/c he gives a lot of examples to study from, but the only grades are quizzes and examples which are hard. Multiple choice are the worst!!
Very clear lecturing style, doesn't go too fast or too slow. Exams are hard but follow what he covers in lectures. Very helpful if you ask him questions outside of class.
Everything that he tells you, you must know for the tests. Tests are tricky, but a good test of your knowledge. Also very helpful in discussion.
Tough class, good teacher.

good teacher, hard tests.
He will bend over backward to help student's succeed. His labs are very difficult, but they are not dull. Take McGaff if you want to be challenged.
Rob is an awesome professor! He is super nice! He will do anything to help a studnet! We had weekly quizes that really helped on the exams. His exams are pretty tough, though, but if you study, you will be fine!
Casual, laid back lecture style, very qualified, really good for a NASTY subject!
He was laid back and very well knowledgeable, but his approach to teaching seem to lack a sense of clearification. He was never to specific on what was important to know and learn..except telling students to just follow the notes giving in class but most of the time, notes from class never really ended up on the test.
Very knowledgeable teacher, exams are super hard (especially multiple choice), i studied for many hours for the exams but still could get above a C in the class. Be careful if you cant make his office hours because he wont put in the extra time to help you if its not during those. Take him if you know your chemistry good...
He'd make a great neighbor, but bad professor. I truly understood the material, and would be able to teach it to someone else, yet still managed to do poorly on the exams. VERY difficult multiple choice. Strongly NOT recommended. If I could do it again, I would not take him.
Exams are really really hard.. especially multiple choice! I felt like i knew the material going into every exam and always ended up with a bad grade every time. It was a little ridiculous. Quizzes almost every week except for exam weeks. Reading is pretty much necessary inorder to get multiple choice questions right.
Exams/multiple choice are impossible. Reading your notes does not help you on multiple choice.
Explains things clearly in class is willing to help outside of class. Tough exams, be sure to read M/C questions carefully they are worth 4pts EACH! Looks for understanding of concept/procedure on larger pt questions but won't acknowledge understanding with ANY credit on his 4pt questions if an error is made(i.e. calculator or conversion error)
Dr. McGaff was often rude and condescending to students. He is the first university instructor that I have actually disliked. He is unreasonable when it comes to discussing missed exam problems, among other things. I am not just bitter and I did well in his class. I recommend taking another instructor, at least for non-chemistry majors.
Difficult class but he does a good job teaching it. Quizzes are easy, test are tricky. Very clear lectures. Gives answer keys to tests and quizzes after the test or quiz which is helpful. Overall good professor.
Exams are extremely difficult and often have very little to do with covered material. When seeking assistance with comprehension of homework etc. a typical answer would be "you can figure it out." Condescending. More concerned with research than with teaching. Teaching style unclear and not well explained materials
McGaff is pretty good at explaining the material. He covers everything that will be on the tests but they are still REALLY difficult. You will need to put in a lot of work and study time. He is alright for lecture but DO NOT take for lab. If you ask a question he is not willing to help. The quizzes during lab are also unrealistic.
Very clear and explains things well however the only time he is ever willing to answer questions is in his office hours. Horrible for lab.
I didn't have a very good experience with McGaff. Nice guy, but very unhelpful-- inconvenient office hours and not willing to meet with students outside of that time frame. Doesn't reply to emails, so if you have questions, good luck because you are on your own! Easy quizzes, but hard tests. I would take someone else if you can.
All tests are based off of the lecture notes, not the book, so attendance is pretty important. But he's very straightforward about what you need to know, and the tests are all practical - pretty much no memorizing. And you get a notecard for every test. Very passionate professor. I liked him.
Chem is obviously hard so I think that is why McGaff gets poor ratings. He really is not that bad. His lectures are okay, not the worst. He is super cool in discussion. Not very helpful in lab. Reading is not as important as the lecture info.
McGaff is pretty average. His course is pretty straightforward but he is probably the least helpful teacher I have ever met. Along with that, he constantly leaves during labs, so you never really know where he is. Also, he won't talk to you unless it's about sports or chemistry. To sum it up, he's a fair teacher, both in practice and in grading.
Chemistry is hard so I think that's why McGaff gets a bad rep. He explains things very well so you can understand them, his tests are straightforward. Extremely helpful in office hours. Somewhat condescending but overall a great professor. To get an A in this class is simple: put the time in and study. As you would have to in any chem.
If you are bad at chemistry, don't take him. He explains things as if we're all experts. He is pretty unapproachable for questions you might have and makes you feel stupid. If you are good at chemistry, he may be a good teacher for you.
Seems very annoyed when students go in for office hours. Does not seem like he wants to help whatsoever. Speaks to students as if they are experts. Class average on first test was 64%. be happy if you can survive with a C...
I was DREADING chemistry but Rob makes lectures clear and understandable. Referring to the book was helpful also. His quizzes & tests are quite easy if you study, he gives you a notecard for each and the front and back 8x11 paper for the final! His lab reports are easily graded but quizzes are tough. If you put in the time with him you'll do well.
Rob is a nice guy and is very laid back. He wants his students to understand the concepts of Chem and not to stress about the nitty gritty. You can use a notecard on every exam (4 exams, 1 final) which is very helpful. He encourages questions during Discussion, don't be afraid to ask! I enjoyed this class and learned a lot from him.
Dr. McGaff is a great lecturer, but he mainly covers math, and does not write down the necessary concepts you need to know for exams, which are extremely hard to do well on. Each MC questions is 4 pts and there are 12 of them; each question is followed by 5-6 choices. He can make you feel prepared if you ask for help, but doesn't actually help. :(
CHM 104 is a tough class with hard material, both in lecture and in lab, but Dr. McGaff is always clear about what he wants and is more than willing to help any student with whatever they need outside of class. You're going to have to put in a lot of work, but I would definitely recommend taking him as a professor.
In lectures he goes over math way to much and hardly talks about the concepts which when the test comes around half the test is concepts that no one understands
McGaff is really clear in lecture, and tells you exactly what will be on the exams, but he grades the exams very tough. Each multiple choice question is worth 4 percent, which adds up quick when they all have 6 choices. Just make sure you really know the theories well, and the rest isn't too bad.
McGaff comes off as a nice guy, but don't be fooled. He encourages people to come to office hours, but when I went, he acted like he didn't have time for me and I only spoke to him for literally 10 seconds. His answer was simply "It's just the way it is." UM,OK? I fully understood every lecture but when it came to tests I was lost. DO NOT TAKE HIM!
I took McGaff for 103 and 104. I took him again on purpose because his teaching style is great. I learned a lot from this professor and he made me enjoy learning chem. I hated everything about the tests (4 exams, 1 final) but if you study A LOT, you can pass this class no problem. He is condescending with questions but really does like to help.
Don't take him. Take anybody else. His tests are impossible to get As on because his multiple choice are extremely confusing and often on stuff we never covered in detail. He is rude when you ask questions. Not approachable at all. Would not recommend him EVER. Im a hard worker and good student but am not getting the grade I deserve
Avoid McGaff at all costs!! He flies through lectures assuming that everyone is a chem expert. Very condescending if you ask a question and not helpful at all during office hours. His lecture tests are nearly impossible to get an A on because he is such a tough grader. Avoid for lab as well because he always leaves and refuses to answer questions.
If you are not good at chem and want to take someone who will really help you understand it, I would recommend taking a different professor. Averages on tests are about 65%. Averages on his lab exams are even lower because the questions he asks are unrealistic and not related to the actual lab experiments at all. Also extremely rude to students.
McGaff is terrible! He is unhelpful and makes students feel stupid for asking questions. His exams are hard and the multiple choice has 5-6 answers, he doesn't go over the concepts so don't expect to get the multiple choice. He always disappears during lab so you're on your own. TAKE SOMEONE ELSE!!!!!!!
McGaff is a tough grader but his lectures are clear and weekly quizzes aren't too bad. He goes through some things kinda fast but if you go to his office outside of class he will take as much time as you need to explain things.
The hardest part about taking this class was how unclear everything was. Lectures are never recorded, notes and other materials are never online, and his tests aren't from the textbook. Exams were impossible to study for because he only provided a few practice problems and half of the exam was focused on concepts, which we never talked about.
You need to attend every lecture or you will easily fall behind. Reading the book is helpful but all of the tests are based off of lecture material. Focus more on the conceptual material when studying for exams. the calculations are very easy but the conceptual material can trip you up on exams very easily. READ THE EXAM Q's CAREFULLY!!
CHM 104 is a tough course, making Rob seem tough, but he wants all of his students to pass. I didn't like having his class at 7:45, but his teaching style and sense of humor motivated me to wake up for his class. Quizzes are relatively easy and tests and the final are tough. He doesn't post notes on D2L, so go to his class as much as you can.
DO NOT TAKE HIM He gives terrible feedback when asking questions related to content. His famous reply is, "It is that way just because it is". He will go through problems in class and his math is not even right. If you NEED 104 and are worried about passing do not take him.
Doesn't ever answer your questions and makes you feel dumb for asking. We would stop material for a test in the middle of a problem so it was really hard to understand what you need to know for an exam. HIGHLY recommend taking someone else.
He is condescending, horrible at teaching, and makes his exams way too difficult, TAKE ANYONE ELSE
I would highly suggest not taking him. He's a good person but not that great of a professor. In lecture, his notes seem very unorganized and are very hard to follow. In lab, he leaves. Just straight up leaves in the middle of lab so if you are confused, good luck. As for his exams, they are incredibly difficult and very hard to study for.
If you happen to get put into McGaff's lecture or lab, be prepared to be teaching yourself the entire semester or maybe just drop his class. Lecture heavy, and really unclear about what he expects you to know, mostly because he gets sidetracked and goes on tangents about irrelevant things. Tough grader and you're tested on few things. Pretty bad.
The fact is that CHM 104 is a tough class. Dr. McGaff is a highly competent and knowledgeable professor, and very passionate about what he does. Although some things in lecture may be unclear (content or expectations) Dr. McGaff is more than happy to help you any way he can. Very accessible out of class and is willing to talk about CHM for hours.
I think Rob is a very knowledgeable professor and I thought he made some good analogies and comparisons to help us learn. Personally I thought he was usually pretty clear in lecture. HowEVER, he has the hardest exams Ive ever taken. He has 12 MC worth 48 out of 100 points on each exam. The best part is he lets you make notecards for each exam
Might be the worst chem prof I've ever taken. Super difficult exams and didn't seem to care whether or not his students passed. Unapproachable in office hours and didn't give out a lot of partial credit.
Rob is a good professor but you definitely need to work for a good grade in his class. He can be kind of condescending if you ask questions, but don't let that discourage you. If you do the practice problems that he gives you, they are parallel to what's on the test, although the multiple choice can be tricky. Take detailed notes and scour them.
The labs themselves are pretty easy and you can get done an hour early sometimes if you know what you are doing. Quizzes every other week are VERY difficult. You need to study the labs from the previous weeks and memorize formulas to do well on them.
It's very important to attend lecture for this class. He does a very good job of explaining concepts and gives practice problems for each chapter, which are very similar to his tests. IMO, he was very rude in discussion when anyone asked questions, and acted if their questions were stupid. Not the most personable, but really knows chemistry well.
Not a bad guy, I just think he cares way more about his research projects that he does about his undergrad students. Discussion never lasted the entire period and he leaves at his first chance from every lecture and discussion. doesnt answer questions well or go out of his way and help students. Lab is the same way
Overall the class wasn't the worst, but he is kind of rude when people ask questions. Also, his tests were so difficult. I always felt prepared going into them because I understood all the practice problems and lectures but then there was always so much on the test that I had no idea how to do.
Rob is the hardest professor I've ever taken. He rambles on during lectures and it's very unclear what you actually need to know for exams. Very condescending towards students when asked questions. His lab quizzes are harder than the exams. Unavailable to meet outside of class- rushed out of lecture every day. Took off random points for errors.
McGaff is not a great professor. He's very unclear with what's needed to know for the exam. Other professors for chem 104 give out practice exams, McGaff does not. 50% of the exams is multiple choice, and not the easy "I can guess it" multiple choice. It's incredibly detailed. I felt ready for every exam and still did poorly, solely bc of this.
Professor McGaff is a nice man and he is a good person. Unfortunately, a good person does not mean he is a good professor. Rob is below average at best at instructing and lecturing. He is little help outside of class and is horrible at answering student's questions. Little to none partial credit on exams. Find a different prof. !!!
TAKE ROB! Super helpful, really cares about students and their learning. Grades a little tough but he cares more about your learning than the grade, gonna have to work for it
CHE104 is a hard class in general. Professor McGaff does an amazing job at keeping a moderate pace in lecture because he writes everything on the board as he goes. Get to know him, go to his office hours, have a conversation with him about something other than chem and it makes him seem much more approachable. He is tough, but overall great!
Prof. McGaff is a nice guy, but was hard to access at times. If you have a question, make sure to ask at discussion or office hours--he does not reply to emails. His only grades were quizzes and exams so you can't rely on anything else (besides lab). Emphasized calculations the majority of time, but exams were multiple choice heavy and misleading.
Quizzes every week in discussion besides test weeks. 5 exams. Lectures are recorded and posted on Canvas. If you and follow his notes you should be fine for exams. 1 notecard per exam, 4 or 5 for final. Multiple-choice questions are tricky. He does make you feel stupid for your questions sometimes, but so do most science professors.
It was almost as if he thought your questions were stupid and would shut you down. Also, multiple choice questions are 4 points each on exams. This was usually the only points I would get off on exams and it would make my grade drop by a lot. I personally do not think that this is an effective way to convey the understanding of material on an exam.
Rob is a nice enough guy, but definitely old school. Is not very interested in "teaching", rather than just relaying information. Exams and quizzes are fair. Any questions should be directed to your peers, Rob will most likely give a lackluster answer. There is a difference between encouraging critical thinking and downright belittling students.
Exams are challenging. 12 multiple choice Q's (answer choices are all A-E... they are difficult!) make up 48/100 of the points but calculation part is easy. Discussion quizzes are usually the same multiple choice format. If you get him in lab it should make up for any points you lost in lecture. His labs are very easy as far as chem 104 labs go.
Professor McGaff is an great lecturer and an expert in his field. He is always relating what we are learning to its industrial and research applications. He gives us problems to work on and if you do actually do them, the course goes relatively smoothly. I had him for lab as well, and while his questions are repetitive, they're easy points.
Rob is super sweet and likes to know his students (especially if you go to office hours). He writes notes as he lectures so he goes at a good pace and that helps if notetaking is not your strong suit. He records the lectures too and posts them. Always explained format of the exams and made practice problems. I took AP Chem and this was 100% review.
I heard really bad things about McGaff before taking this class so I was extremely nervous, but it was honestly super fun and I really like him! His lectures make sense and are helpful, if you need help he is more than willing to help you, and he wants his students to succeed. I recommend you take him!
Rob had fun lectures even though they were at 7:45am. I had him for lab too, and while the quizzes were a bit confusing at times the workload was much less than other lab instructors. He's super easy to talk to and a great guy overall.
Good professor who really knows his stuff. I would definitely recommend taking him for 104.
Rob was a great professor who cares about his students. Highly recommend going into office hours when you have questions. Lectures are good, and he posts the lecture videos on Canvas. However, it is a tough class with difficult tests and weekly quizzes. Be prepared to work hard.
