he knows his stuff but he is a bit boring.his tests are not that easy. If you are looking for an easy grade, don't take this class.
NEW, from sonoma state. really difficult. makes things harder than they are. He teaches straight out of the book analyzing philosophers. grades very difficultly. i worked SOO hard and i still dont understand how my final grade is a C.100% and 78% on the 2 midterms, a 190/200 on the term paper. his grading doesnt make sense. would not take again.
Honestly after much consideration this man should not be teaching. They say those who can't do teach, well this man can do and should not be teaching. He knows his stuff very well, but is obviously not sure how to teach. When I asked suggested he was teaching at a graduate level his replied "wow my colleges suggested that just this morning!"
Very Hard grader. Worked my butt off and was there every day and I still was lost. Wouldn't suggest this teacher. He is good at replying to questions over email.
Beware! Only take Abele's class if you are a Philosophy buff! His tests are difficult and he grades inconsistently. He just got his PHD and is learning how to teach.
boring and is not clear about what he talks about.
He loses assignments, A LOT. He is hard to understand and isn't very helpful. If you don't want to be set back in your studies DO NOT take any class taught by this guy.
I had the experience of this professor giving me a "D" in the class just because he didn't like my political views. Beware of sharing your opinion with him if you want to get an "A." Apparently the only opinions he values are his own.
Hard grading, hard to comprehend, hard to follow. His lectures are walls of text with maybe a couple pictures thrown in that look like they're from 1950. I tried to work with him, but unfortunately he was unable (or unwilling) to be reasoned with. Also said some very immature comments to students, I'd equate him to a ten year old on a power trip
I like to think I'm a good student, but this is just obnoxious. I failed the class!! There were no discussions, just text on a screen. Book has no pictures. Not to mention--NO STUDY GUIDES!! And he wants you to be super specific, but refuses to give study guides. Totally has favorites, too. DO NOT RECOMMEND.
Okay, I don't understand why everyone had such a bad experience with his class. He actually is a very good teacher. He is extremely knowledgeable about the subject and he is rather good at explaining religious concepts. He doesn't seem to be biased at all, he encourages discussion, and his tests are reasonable.
I think he is a really great teacher. He is open to hearing what everyone has to say, and he has so much knowledge about the subject. His class may be a little on the harder side, but he is very willing to answer questions or help explain something if someone is confused. It is not too difficult to do well in his class if you listen, ask, and study
this teacher is absolutely aweful. i worked my butt off and still dont think i'm going to pass. he marked almost 70 points off on my term paper for petty errors, but barely explained how to do it in the first place. awful. dont take any classes from him.
DO NOT TAKE HIM! he grades really hard, even if you work your butt off you will most likey, at best, get a C.
bleh horrible teacher.if you have the same opinions as him and you participate a lot then you have a chance of getting an A, other than that a C is pretty impossible.and dont be late.
abele is extremely ridiculous. hes tests are all essay based and grading is very arbitrary. if your views are not the same as his, you will be graded accordingly. his remarks can be somewhat rude and unnecessary. i highly do not recommend this class be taken. it should not be difficult to get an A in this class
He seemed like a very good teacher at first but if you dont agree with his opinion you wont b happy with your grade. the tests are essay based and you wont do too well unless you agree with his opinion
Dr. Abele is a fantastic instructor who is dedicated to his student's learning and to the teaching process. He is helpful beyond imagination, has office hours that accommodate anyone's schedule, and is extremely knowledgeable in a variety of subjects. He's absolutely brilliant and his presence is an asset to DVC.
Great instructor. He will field all questions and doesnt make you feel totally awkward for having one. His lesson plans are bent around student readiness ( we werent ready for a test so he set it back a week) never asked for more of his students than he gave of himself. Very understanding of his students needs. He made the class fun.
Class is very hard, he grades extremely hard every question worth 5 or more pts so if you mess up ur screwed, he explains it one way and if you dont get it that way oh well. and if you dont agree with he says or see things his was your out of luck and dont get the points. would not take him unless you understand and like philosophy
Doc Abele is fantastic. For those who are afraid you won't do well in his class based on the mouth-breathers' critique below: have no fear. He's great. Hands down, the best Prof at DVC.
This class is the hardest class i've taken at DVC, there is a ten page paper and all the quizes are essay questions, and there is pretty dense reading. But Abele is a pro, and the class is worth it. He has an extremely open mind for class discussions, just speak up in class!! Heavy reading/writing so don't take with English.
Dr. Abele is an amazing professor. He is extremely knowledgeable, passionate about what he teaches, very open to discussion, and willing to work with you. I did poorly on a test and he let me do extra credit to keep my grade. If you want an easy grade, this is not the class. It's very difficult, but rewarding to be in.
He is one of the worst. He will not help you at all, and he will lie to your face. He will tell you one thing, and immediately change his mind.
Anyone who says anything good about this teacher is a suckup. He is, as one person here said, an elitist pig. He loves to hear himself talk, and if you don't agree with him you WILL be shot down. Ridiculous expectations, favoritism, boring as hell, "la la la I'm so great because I had dinner with Habermas." Abele, you get an F.
Dr. ABele is probably the most worthless teacher you will ever have!! I have no idea why this idiot is even teaching!
This guy was pretty good. I really enjoyed his class. It was difficult but he is very understanding. I would take this class again but I would know that I have to do the reading
I wouldnt take this class again. I didnt understand a thing because he has all power point lectures and goes at his own pace through them so it is hard to take notes. Also he wrote his own book which is also one of te books he uses in class, I think that just so somone actually buys his book.
This guy is extremely hard, reading the text and understanding is near to impossible, although his lectures are sometimes interesting. I learned philo from another teacher here and i understood what he was talking about better then abele
He is a great teacher.
BORING. He is so monotone and hard to follow.
I came into this class believing I was taking an intro to philosophy. As the semester progressed, more students continued to drop, and it was evident that he thought he was teaching a grad class. This man is very a intelligent professor! I took his class in 2008, when it was his first semester at DVC. So it was a trial and error class. If you are l
I really liked this class. I took it Fall 2010, and I found it challenging but interesting. If you keep up with the reading, and take good notes, then you'll be able pass the class just fine. I would recommend him to anyone who wants to actually learn something and not just take a class simply for an easy A.
i thought it was going to be an intro to philosophy but this is literally an advanced course requiring prior knowledge. i was in the class for about 2 months and was unable to follow along or understand anything. all 6 people i knew in the class dropped. DO NOT TAKE
very nice teacher although extremely difficult. Uses alot of analysis and theory. Text is very hard to understand and his lectures don't make it much clearer, although they are interesting. Serious students only and DON"T BE TARDY
Professor Abele is truly the ideal instructor. He is extremely intelligent and he actually loves to teach. I've taken 3 of his courses and passed each time with a B doing only what was required of the course. The people who complain about him are those who expect to get a good grade just for showing up. Most people don't realize their in college...
Professor Abele wants his students to get something out of his class Yes, it is "hard" like these others describe because you actaully have to try to get a good grade. Trying in school?? Who would have guessed! Do the readings. if you don't understand, go on the internet and find a simpler explanation. hw+reading+understanding=GoodTestGrades.
This guy thinks he is GOD himself. He's full of himself, and you cannot talk to this guy about anything. He is the worst teacher.
Abele is a really intelligent professor; he is strict, but if you show up and pay attention and work hard you will learn a lot and can get a good grade. His lectures are clear and he is open to all questions, he is very devoted to helping students do well in his course.
This class is dense, like philosophy, and forces you to think outside of yourself. His lectures are comprehensive and evoke enough thought to where the textbook is unnecessary. I had an opposite opinion of him but he was extremely interested in what I had to say. He's a wonderful professor, you just have to be willing to dive into philosophy.
The PERFECT professor! Very clear in his instruction, always open for questions and clarifications, very understanding, and accommodates to the classes needs! Do the readings, go to class, take notes, and you're golden! :)
GO TO CLASS!! This class will be fairly easy if you just go to class. Attendance is an important part of your grade. And not to mention the stuff that you learn in this class is very interesting and informative. Even though you have to write 3 essays on the test, they only need to be a paragraph for a B. pretty much just answer the question right
Very tough grader. You will have to show up for class since it is about 10% percent of overall grade plus in class work is often given. Show up to class, take notes, and do the readings and you will be fine. There is an 8 page research paper due which is not too difficult. Seems like class got easier as semester went along.
This guy is a GREAT teacher! He's not one of those professors who drives the class to fit his views, he is very objective and teaches the class so YOU can make your own choices about what you believe is true in Philosophy. I greatly admire him and his methods of teaching and would recommend him to anyone who is interested in taking this course
Glad to see professor abele hasn't changed. He's difficult. But, he's helpful. He doesn't have favorites as some suggest, he just favors those who think and do work. He doesn't give poor grades for disagreeing. He gives poor grades for having unfounded opinions. If you disagree, back it up and you'll be fine. The purpose is to THINK.
ok this is literally the hardest professor ive ever had. He has his head so far up his ass it's disgusting. He takes his job TOO seriously, and treats us like philo grad students, even though it's just intro. DONT TAKE HIM
This class is hard. But its clear and he's an incredible instructor and is incredibly educated on Philosophy. If you like philosophy and actually want to learn about it, Abele is the right choice. Very organized and tests are from the notes but require understanding. He loosens up after awhile. Good guy that won't tolerate any BS.
Not a big fan of his teaching style. He seems to have a narrow acceptance of what he wants, and if you stray a bit you're marked down. He knows his stuff, he's just a bit too harsh when grading.
This man is a sticler for reading everything within the chapters assigned and writing down what he thought was the answer. he does not give points for answers that are half right or right in their own way. its either right or wrong
Really smart guy. It boggles my mind he teaches intro and not advanced at a university! Super strict and the assignments are difficult. 3/4 of the class had dropped out by the final. But, overall if you're dedicated and love philosophy I highly recommend him.
for a intro class, it is very difficult. not a class for procrastinators. word of warning, make sure you keep up with the readings. if you don't read its very easy to fall behind. if you actually take the time to read and understand the readings he assigns you will succeed in the class
Exacerbated by Abele's apathy to teach, less than engaging conversation, boastful, degrading, and insulting, behavior. More of a course to learn about narcissism than philosophy. You will need to teach yourself using outside sources and revere him to pass the class. Good life lesson for working in the real world!
It's refreshing to take a course at DVC with a professor that has a doctorate and is actually published in their field. If you are legitimately interested in learning Philosophy and getting something out of the class, I highly recommend this professor.
Abele is a great teacher compared to the one I had at SFSU if you're not disciplined enough to handle this class then don't take it, if you are looking for an easy A then don't take it but if you are serious in learning something out of this class then I would highly recommend Abele as your teacher. p.s. He's ALWAYS open to helping you just ask!
Dr. Abele is one of the worst teachers that I have ever had. He is very confusing in his lectures. He assumes that if you do not understand something, it is because you did not read. He is super strict and is not open to different interpretations for philosophical questions. I do not recommend taking any course that he teaches.
I would not recommend this professor at all. Does not teach with any enthusiasm, does not go over material pre and post test, and is the reason why I wasn't able to start nursing school this spring. Taking ethics with a much better professor this semester. I dont understand how people can praise this professor, let alone understand him.
Tests were unreasonable difficult as well as the in class assignments. His grading was unfair and demanding. He's a "nice" guy when you talk with him, but refuses to guide you in the way to improve your grade for the class. I would not recommend this teacher
He doesn't teach the subject very well, he isn't clear on the topics what so ever and just repeats the same subject and doesn't make anything clear.... Makes everything more confusing
His lecture isn't boring but is very confusing. However, his tests are really easy and you can just get a 100/100 easily. He allows a 25-line cheat sheet too so there is no need to study for the tests. There's a debate at the end of the Semester but as long as you fulfill the requirements, you'll definitely get an A.
He took attendance every class. Lecture is interesting yet confusing. His tests are really easy and he allows a 25-line cheat sheet so there's no need to study for test. There's a debate at the end of the Semester but if you fulfill all the requirements, A is in your hand. Overall, a really easy and eye-opening class.
Before taking this class, I was dreading it. But after taking it, it was the best class I have taken so far. The subjects are hard but he makes sure you understand it and helps you if you dont. You get an outline for the tests which is SUPER helpful. Great teacher, very nice and helpful and smart!!
If you take the class seriously then you can expect not just do well but also learn a lot (he has a PhD in philo). Attendance is taken daily and reading the assigned chapters is a must. He takes the class seriously and expects that students do the same but is always willing to help. I highly recommend both the class and this professor.
Abele is a very good teacher; while he is very technical and precise he is not bias, welcomes questions, participation and different views on topics. He tells u what is coming on exams, so they are fairly easy. If you get an A up to the final, you don't have to take the final. Fairly easy grader, just expects you to do the reading and be present.
Very sharp. Very clear. The concepts of the class were difficult. He sticks to the syllabus and will work with you. Dry sense of humor. A great teacher, which is what is necessary for this class. Definitely recommend.
Most of the people who complained about him were not doing the reading and failed to ever participate in class, which sets you up for failure. The reading is important, it isn't that hard to grasp and he explains questions in depth. I got 100% on almost all of the tests. If you are respectful, participate, ask questions and read you will do great!!
Abele is great. Yes, he is serious about teaching and class conduct. But, he is extremely intelligent, clear about exams - practically tells you what is on them. If you do the reading, show up to class, you are good to go. I learned quite a bit from him and would recommend people take him. People that did poorly in his course gave it no effort.
Abele was by far one of my favorite professors I've come across in my two years at dvc. People are quick to complain he's hard and unfair but if you attend class and actually do the readings, you're good. He has 4-5 tests including the final and one essay. Also, he has a good sense of humor in my opinion. It made his lectures even better
I got an A in this class because he liked me and I (personally) found the material easy. But as far as I know the kids who he just didn't like really struggled. He's very opinionated and it affects his opinion of youhow he gradeshow he teaches. You cannot argue grades with him successfully. Yeah, it was an easy A (for me) but I didn't learn much.
He is an amazing teacher, I think that he is well-organized. He is very patient and will be more than happy to answer any questions you have. By far my favorite teacher on campus after my first year.
A very knowledgeable professor who is very clear-cut in what he expects and will make you work. If you are there to learn and not just get an easy A then this is the class for you. Book is absolutely necessary, attend class (seriously, don't skip), and if you have an A going into the final you don't have to take it. Therefore, take his class.
Often asks students to leave class for cellphones, food, or surfing on your laptop. No nonsense kind of guy, very strict.
I recommend Dr. Abele to everyone I know! His philo classes are what interested me in the subject. His lectures are both witty, extremely informative and concise; he covers the material quickly and effortlessly. Has zero tolerance for students who take classes only for grades or who mess around in class. Awesome teacher with a Kant-like hairstyle!
Professor Abele is a top-rate teacher. He is extremely intelligent and can answer any question you have about philosophy. Very structured lectures and exams so you know what to expect, but not an easy-A. Always willing to help you better understand the material and is a real catch outside of class (in class he's much more professional and strict).
The class is extremely straightforward an clear cut. He is precise on his expectations and will not budge on negotiating terms of the syllabus. DO THE REVIEW QUESTIONS and this class is an easy A. As an intro level course to philo I would not recommend Abele because he turns some off to studying philosophy by his style. Overall would reccomend
Abele is so awesome. I have absolutely ZERO interest in philosophy, but this was my favorite class this semester. He will allow students to fight for their reasoning on certain answers, he will answer tons of questions, and is extremely patient. I strongly recommend this professor, if you work hard, you'll have a great experience.
Was a very hard topic for me to grasp, had to drop out because I didnt read enough of the textbook.
Although many people find him strict, Professor Abele was helpful, consistent, and knowledgeable. As a philosophy major, I appreciate how informative he's been and his persistence in providing a high caliber of education. He is not the easiest professor I have had, but he is an exceptional educator... if you listen.
Dr. Abele is an amazing professor! He doesn't post his powerpoints online, so you might want to write them down. This class was so straightforward if you just pay attention. A lot of in class work. Also, if you have an A by the end of the semester and have been absent less than 4 times you don't have to take the final.
As a science major with no real interest in Philosophy, I found the class to be a little dull and useless. That being said, I thought it was a decently easy class. Dr. Abele is definitely a strict, no-nonsense-kind-of-guy. Show up to class, listen to lecture, do the homework and group work, read a bit from the book and you will do just fine.
I now want to take more philosophy classes b/c of Abele. If you just go to class and sit there confused without asking any questions or scarifying your sleep to go to his morning office hours, you're not going to do well. Abele practically gives out the questions and answers to every test, all I did was go to him to double check if my answers.
This class has been my worst experience with a teacher at dvc. I went into this class genuinely interested in the subject and was working hard, sitting in the front, asking questions, and getting almost exclusively 100% on everything. Then he dropped me without warning for being 5 minutes late one too many times. Truly disappointing.
Abele is a strict teacher. If you are one to show up to class late, miss classes and kind of space off during long, boring lectures - don't take this class. He doesn't seem to care about his students. He goes on and on during lectures with his PowerPoints. The PowerPoints are nice but he just rambles on. Tests are very diffcult, you must study.
Hard tests. Hard classwork. Grades harshly. If you fall asleep/you're on your phone during class he will kick you out. Gets easily irritated by students. Not pleasant. Not a good professor. Does not make the material easy to learn/follow. Would not recommend this teacher to anyone, worst teacher I've had at DVC.
Took Comparative Religion just because it sounded interesting and because it's a transferrable course. Big mistake! This teacher is really tough and is extremely rude. I didn't do well on one test and when he handed it back to me he had the nerve to write, "Did you even read the assigned material?" I could go on about other things but I wont.
A hard yet rewarding class, Professor Abele is a wealth of knowledge often underutilized by the students within the classroom. He is rigid, yet direct.
Just do the review questions and you'll do well. On the first test of the semester I didn't do them and got a 54/100. I buckled down after that, went to his office hours, did the review questions, sacrificed some sleep and netflix and ended up getting to skip the final. His classes start with 45 people but skim down to 15 people by the end.
A great, respectable man. It clearly shows that he has a vast knowledge for the subject that he is teaching. Throughout my semester, there has not been a single question that he wasn't able to answer. Starting each unit, he gives you a list of questions and those will be on the test. Easy A if you study off of those.
Abele is clearly very knowledgeable on the subject of philosophy, but he just does not teach well. He sets his students up for failure. His lectures are extremely long, & not available online. He gives you a study guide for each test but he alters the questions on the actual test and adds more to them. And besides that he grades them very harshly
Hard grader, super specific about how he wants things done, not flexiable. Wouldn't recommend.
I had possibly the worst experience with this professor. Really strict with attendance, make sure you raise your hand and he sees you in class because he may mark you absent even if you're in class and eventually drop you for no reason.
The worst philosophy professor in DVC. Doesn't have any leniency, not clear grading system, just reads off his powerpoint and makes his students more confused than the textbook. If you have the choice, DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR.
Though Professor Abele's class was one of the more challenging courses among the many I've taken at DVC, I must say that he constructs this course like any UC Professor would. Go to class, don't have your eyes wandering on your phone, read the material & do the study questions because they do show up on the tests.
Was nervous about taking him bc of reviews, but was pleasantly surprised! No, he's not the warmest, most approachable person, but he is willing and helpful. Do your part as a student: show up, read, study for exams, AND YOU'LL DO FINE!
He's a good teacher don't get me wrong and will make you think about the material that you are learning. Don't be late and only miss class if you HAVE to. Also, don't be on your cell phone. He will kick you out if you do.
This guy deserves more credit. Old school, traditional kind of teacher w/ a ton of knowledge and experience. Dry sense of humor, very helpful w/ questions. Ppl who dislike him complain because they cant use their phones in class. This is College. Get with it.
Philo is a tough subject, but Abele does a great job of making it clear by taking the time to explain concepts, use videos & answer student's questions. He has study guides for tests which you can turn in to him so he can give you advice to help you score better. He's not unreasonable, his class just requires you to be a diligent student.
Obviously very knowledgable in philosophy. Not a personal fan of his teaching style and I do sometimes feel like he over-complicates things. I do enjoy the format of his tests. If you don't like writing short answer essays for tests, you are not going to like his class. He grades tests fairly hard. Partial credit is rare.
he was the worst teacher i ever had in my life. He would fail me in every test i took, until i would point out to him that all my answers were correct and from the book. he would then change my grade to an A, i had to actually grade my own tests. He also knows nothing about ethics.
Dr. Abele is a great professor and a great guy. I found his class to be a rewarding experience, his class left me with a new perspective on life. His lectures are precise and to the point, and if you take good notes on them and read the assigned reading, you'll do fine. Also, if you get an A on all of your tests, you can skip the final.
lol, just don't even waste your time. He needs to teach at a middle school with the way he runs his class. expect to get points taken off if you get up to go to the bathroom lol unbelievable.
This class was one of my hardest classes at DVC, I would do good on the homework and bad on the test at first. But by attending his office hours and participating more in class, I found that the material stuck better. He definitely knows what he's talking about. Don't be late to class, don't use your phone. He also makes bad jokes.
Please just don't take him. As someone who genuinely tried in his class I struggled just to get a D. And believe me when I tell you I DO NOT have a hard time with school. The tests are loaded questions and all essay answers. None of it is multiple choice and he gives youwhat he thinks you deserve. And most of the time hes wrong when marking you off
One of the worse professor I have seen in the entire DVC. There is no multiple answers to his tests, it is all essay based. Whatever you write he will give you grade according to what he thinks is right. Lectures are different than what is on the exam. Out of 34 or 36 People in the class only 4 passed! So I would not recommend this teach at all!
I thought I was going to fail or at least get a C in this class, but I ended up getting an A! Its true, this class is really hard. He actually makes you work for your grade, but if you ask for his help and go to his office hours, he WILL help you out. He offered me 2 extra credit, enough to pull my grade up! Take him, youll learn so much.
Believe me Im no A student, I came into this class just as afraid as you. If you study, show up to every class and pay attention you will pass. Yes, he is a hard grader but he has a soft heart! My attention span is 2 seconds, but his class was genuinely one of the best I have taken. Go to office hours, show him you care about the class!
I LOVE Dr. Abele! He is the most sweetest professor on campus, makes corny dad jokes, and always sets a good mood and a good lecture for his class. He grades highly and gives a lot of extra credit work. As long as you make it known that you're taking his class seriously, he'll favor you and help you out to get the best grade possible.
He's a great teacher but gives a lot of information so if you don't understand something you better ask or you're going to get lost quick. Classwork is in groups but pretty simple. Lets you have a cheat sheet for every exam.
Covers interesting topics and involves students in participating
I am an ESL student, so I was scared of getting a bad grade in his class. He is academically rigorous. However, he deeply cares about students. His logic class tests are all objective answers(multiply choices/fill in the blanks), so language barrier is not a problem. He also gives extra credit and guarantees you an A if you get an A in the final.
The lectures aren't as important as the book work. Actually, you could pass simply by using the book work. I found the class pretty boring and uninspiring, but is introductory philosophy. He makes clear presentations and makes clear whats expected on the test. Do the homework and don't fall asleep and you'll be fine.
Dr. Abele prepared us for the tests extremely well. There are study guides given that are similar to the test questions themselves and we could even bring short outlines (enough to remind you of almost every concept you need and explain briefly what they're about) with us to the exam. The content is interesting too. The notes however can be messy.
AVOID HIS CLASSES. He is an absolute horrible teachers. He will often say he doesnt like the methods used in the textbook( WHICH HE TELLS US TO BUY), so in other words EVERYTHING in the textbook will be useless for you in HW and test. He is also a very HARSH GRADER. Even if you get the slighest thing wrong you will not get partial credit.
Worst teacher I have ever had, not sympathetic, does not respond to email or out of class inquiries and when he does he is not nice. More specifically he once told a student in a class to get out and that they were in the wrong class because the individual asked a question to clarify something found on the syllabus
Philosophy is already a difficult subject to understand, and the way this professor teaches honestly made it that much more difficult to understand. He does not use Canvas, so you will never know your grade unless you ask him. Exams are really difficult, they are essay based. If you're taking philosophy, I suggest taking someone else.
I really think that Prof. Abele gets a bad rap. Yes, you must assume he is right about everything to avoid feeling put down. I think he has trouble being compassionate to his students, but he's very knowledgable and his lectures have great content. Hard grader, but he will respond to questions as long as he doesn't feel you are arguing with him.
Professor Abele is by far one of the worst teachers I have ever had if not the worst. He gives study questions as prep for the test, but expects you to learn everything on your own. He doesnt allow material learned in class on the test you basically teach yourself and if it isnt what he wants it wrong. He is incredible degrading and unpleasant.
He teaches a lecture-based class where you are expected to teach yourself from a textbook. His lectures scratch the surface of what is asked and he is a tough grader. One slip up and you won't even get partial credit on your essay questions. When I asked for help I was pointed to another professor. The class was clearly uninspired/disappointed.
This professor is not easy. If you want an A you will have to work for it by reading alot and seeking out help in the tutoring center. Do not be late or absent he will drop you. Do not have cell phone out. Use the restroom before class or during break. Do the extra credit if you think you need it. Overall content is good he just lacks compassion.
Don't take him if its your first philo class.
I never thought of leaving a bad comment on any of my professors, but for this one, I have to. I had 99.02% grade until the finals, he said the first day -- if you have A going into the finals you do not have to take the test. He did not let me since I did not participate in the discussion board. Then he gave me D on the finals, with NO COMMENTS.
Do your part and you will get an A! Read read read! Do his question and answer WS's and make your test outlines accordingly. Show up, dont use your phone, and ask the right questions. He is very warm and approachable as long as he can see you are doing whats expected. Easy A, sometimes he ends class super early too. Take good notes & pay attention.
Unclear instructions. He will not tell you why you lost points. He just tells you to go back and look at the video despite the fact that it's no help. He is completely unhelpful and nearly unreachable outside of class. It's almost like he wants you to fail. Plus you'll fail the class over formatting issues.
What a terrible professor. If you want a professor that teaches, take any other professor at DVC. If you wish for an emotionless guy who records his lectures and doesnt give feedback take him!
If there is a zero, I rate him zero for sure. Don't take him. HE IS THE WORST TEACHER I EVER MET.
What a terrible professor!! The worst professor in DVC. Be careful, don't take him, don't take him, don't take him!
Worst online class I have ever taken. The class was failing every single assignment, he does not respond quick to emails. He grades the homework so hard, you will not receive an A, B, or C on any assignment. Do not take it, I dropped because it is not worth struggling for a GE. He is by far the worst professor I have ever had.
I would give him a zero if I could. This is my last semester at DVC and he is by far the absolute worst professor I've ever had. He puts subjects on the test that he says he won't test us on. I had an emergency and he didn't let me retake a test and was very rude to me. He makes this class even more boring. DO NOT take this professor.
The worst professor at DVC. I have never given a professor a rating this low before. He is a rude professor who refuses to help his students and tries to make the class as hard as possible. Avoid this professor at all cost
I took his philosophy class because I thought this subject was supposed to be inspiring, thought-provoking, and interesting. Well not in this guy's class. Like the other reviews say the guy lacks any emotion, won't help you with your work, barely scratches the surface of the topic, and makes everything as dry and boring as possible.
I wont ever take him again
He is very straightforward, can come across as stern at first but if you show him you care about philosophy and aren't complaining he will help you along the way. I did horrible at first, but showed I put the work in and was able to get extra credit on all tests. Apply yourself, use your brain, & show a good attitude/enthusiasm & you will do well.
I've never had a professor who so obviously does not care about his students. He won't help you with your work and gives monotone lectures. Miss a test due to uncontrollable circumstances and he won't give you a makeup test, partial credit, extra credit, NOTHING. I only feel good giving him 1 star rather than 0 because the final isn't cumulative.
Horrible. Very hard class with little support, theres lots of trick questions, and lectures suck. He says the textbook sucks but still requires it. Without a good textbook or a good professor, how are you supposed to succeed? According to canvas, the average score on most of his assignments is a D or F, sometimes a C if you're lucky.
Overall good professor. Assignments are graded fairly and honestly. Each test question gives you around 4 questions to choose from so you can pick the one you feel most confident about. Lectures are a bit of a weak point, but are mostly a supplement to the reading so they are not super important. Gave me extra credit on well done assignments.
This class has by far been my worst experience. Not sure if he understood technology. Tried to ask him questions about the syllabus and he instantly accused me of not reading it when I just didnt understand the wording. Not a very nice person. Does not care about you at all. Assigns 4 pop tests due the same day that comprise over 50% of grade.
He graded extremely hard, wouldn't let me retake or make anything up. Super strict and the study guides weren't very helpful. I'm not taking philosophy ever again or with this professor.
Mixed feelings about this professor. Requires purchase of new textbook. Very strict on grading and email etiquette. The last assignment dropped my grade a whole letter and didn't even respond to emails asking to round. Gives extra credit when deserved tho. 3/4 of the people dropped the class because of his grading. REQUIRES APPOINTMENTS TO MEET
Truly one of the worst professors I have come across. Because his lectures are all over the place and confusing, it makes homework assignments difficult. When emailing questions you get a very basic "see review video" response-Videos are outdated and not class-specific. Uses diff terminology in homework vs lectures which adds to the confusion. 0/0
Exams are based on readings - so make sure to read the assigned pages from the textbook. He can come off as harsh and rude when he leaves comments on your work. Homework is graded based on correctness. But overall I enjoyed his class because he is very knowledgable about philosophy and his lectures are super short and understandable.
Awful professor. He will keep students at a low grade if they do bad on a singular test, no chances at bringing yourself up much past a C at that point, he'll continue to grade every other test poorly with no reasoning behind it. Refuses to connect outside of class when he knows he's graded incorrectly, does not allow himself to be proven wrong.
Easily the worst professor I have ever had. He grades tough, does not care for his students' success, and makes many contradictions in his grading. Had a tutor say that most of his gradings do not make sense and he overcomplicates philosophy.
Easily one of the worst professors I've ever had. Even if you answer the questions perfectly from lecture you will still only earn (at best) a C. His class significantly brought my gpa down, and his grading seems to be based on whether he likes your answer or not rather than accuracy or insight. Please do not take his class.
Great lectures, Good group discussions/interactions, and it was fun, honestly. But he is a VERY tough grader. The class average for a test was always D or an F, which means students, on average, failed/barely passed on each test. personally, the class was great, but at the end of the day, your grades matter significantly. Take it if not for credit.
Gives no good explanation on why you receive a horrible score, class average is low on everything, nobody really passes, can't provide good instruction in a manner that allows more than half the class to understand, when emailed he insinuated that I did not use common sense which is a complete insult to me, worse professor I ever met. Don't take
One of my favorite professors I've had. Lectures are made in an a way that is easy to understand yet requires your utmost attention to grasp, with addition to his humor. This class has helped me in ways that reach farther than just education. Thank you Dr. Abele.
One of my favorite professors I've had. Lectures are made in an a way that is easy to understand yet requires your utmost attention to grasp, with addition to his humor. This class has helped me in ways that reach farther than just education. Thank you Dr. Abele
Pros = Amazing lectures, like, it literally made barely readable texts into intuitively comprehensible ones, with good humor. Lively class. Few HW but reading material instead. Decent amount of EC, you will need it! Cons = Incredibly harsh grading. Like I only missed the first homework and if I had not taken extra credit I would have gotten a B.
Save yourself the trouble and don't take this class. The whole course was very confusing, the materials we used were extremely outdated and the lectures would confuse you more instead of helping you.
Worst professor I've ever had. He's on some type of power trip and enjoys being mean to his students. Makes a difficult subject even worse.
He is by far the WORST professor I have ever had, he makes materials extremely hard to understand, and his lectures are not very helpful. He rushes through slides and grades EXTREMELY HARSH. Overall this professor is terrible don't take any of his classes to save yourself the stress. I had to drop to save my 4.0!
Reading the reading material is essential to passing the class. Intimidating at first, but he definitely cares about his students and the subject that he is teaching.
I had an A in the class but he fully dropped my enrollment because he does not tolerate tardiness. Did not listen when I tried to explain ahead of time that the reason was medical. Didn't even send an email, just told me not to sit down when I walked into the room. He mostly teaches from the book, but gives some alternate methods in lecture.
Claims he can't use the Canvas system since the class is in person. He will not give your grade via email, you must go to the early morning and short office hours to get it. Gave confusing instructions for assignments and tests. Says 700 points possible in the course in the syllabus, ended up being worth over 1000. Hates any tardiness.
He did not treat this intro level class as such. He has a confusing way of doing lectures and how he makes the slides he presents. He rushes through in class assignments which makes many people turn in papers that are incomplete. This is the first negative review I have left on this site, but it is much deserved.
100% of the problem is the grading. If you take a test in this class and don't cite exactly what he wants to read, he'll straight up not grade your test and fail you. It doesn't matter how you try and explain your learnings, in this class there's only one "correct" way to learn.
Dr. Abele is an extremely knowledgeable individual in the realm of ethics and philosophy. As long as you study, take advantage of the allowed cheat sheet for exams, and study the correct material, the class is a breeze. Unfortunately, I did not figure this out until the last test (I received 100%). Make sure to attend office hours.
The class itself isn't horrible if you learn his system. The tests are straight from the textbook, videos, and his lectures. As long as you read and attend the classes, you should be fine on the tests. Do take advantage of the outlines he allows before the tests, and he hates tardiness/absences. It can be stressful, but he is passionate about philo
To have access to a teacher with such an deep understanding of their subject at a JC level is rare. If you want to know what it takes to learn at an UC level he is your teacher It is NOT for everyone. His expectations are clear and firm. His test Q's are drawn directly from lecture I recorded his slides & audio and used it to build my test notes.
This is the first time I gave such a poor grade to a professor. He always calls the roll before class and won't let you sign in even if you are one minute late. The assignment grading is confusing.
Professor Abele is a knowledgeable lecturer, but the grading is harsh. Attend office hours, use the cheat sheet, and consider unstuck ai to prepare for exams. The class is challenging but manageable with dedication.
Hes very knowledgeable and passionate about philosophy/teaching which makes lectures engaging and fairly easy to sit through. But can be dgrading/sarcastic when asked questions. Very tough grader esp on tests which weigh your grade down A LOT; use cheat sheet and outline. DO ALL THE READINGS if you want to pass this class.
Oh boy where to even start. This guy's definitely on some sort of power trip. Granted, he does know what he's talking about, but that doesn't excuse being condescending and derisive toward pupils. His “introduction” to ethics class is not an introduction, it's a high speed launch. The lectures contain heavy material. Good luck reading the textbook!
Dr. Abele is kind and passionate about philosophy. You'll read tons, you'll take long tests. But it's impossible to fail if you do extra credit and “cheat” sheets, he wants you to do well :). I don't see how anyone doesn't like this class. Dr. Abele was my favorite this semester. He's makes philo super interesting you just have to put in the work.
Barely explains the texts. Expects students to have advanced understanding of philosophy in a beginner's class. Very nit-picky about test answers and a harsh test grader. If you have an A in the class you don't have to take the final. Does not allow students to use computers to take notes, lectures are hard to keep up with when writing notes.
Genuinely one of the worst college experiences so far. This guy brings his unnecessary politics into every discussion, ESPECIALLY if it has nothing to do with it. He grades hard and only gives you a good grade if you parrot his thoughts onto the test paper.
Loved ethics. Do the reading, reread the reading until you really understand it bc you can't BS the tests at all. I lit switched my major to philo after taking his class. Super interesting lectures and readings, info presented in an easily digestible way with plenty of EC opportunities. If you genuinely are interested in learning, u will do well.
At first glance, they are a meticulous lecturer, but respond condescendingly to questions, dismissing them with "read the book." His lectures include power trips and conservative rhetoric disguised as intellectual discourse, particularly against LGBTQ+ and women's rights whilst idolizing a racist philosopher who preaches universal moral worth.
Professor Abele isn't for people trying to get an easy A for a requirement, he really wants you to put the work in! He asks for no electronics, everything is on paper. If you just take the time outside of class to read the textbook and take notes you'll get an A, always be on time to his class as he deducts points for tardy from grade!
Professor Abele is VERY knowledgeable and passionate of philosophy. He is a tough grader but is clear on his criteria. Initially I planned on dropping his ethics class only to find he sparked an interest in me. If you pay close attention you'll do fine, but dont take his class unless you're actually interested in the subject. I am taking him again.
This guy genuinely tried to make it as hard as possible for us to learn, no material was ever uploaded, and you were forbidden from taking pictures while only getting little time to take notes. He's just unpleasant to be around, and cares more about getting his ego stroked then teaching students Not fit for academia. Power tripping fossil
Robert is one of my favorite professors. I struggled at first but he gave endless opportunities for extra credit and rewarded hard work and improvement. I failed the first test and still ended with an A. He is truly unbiased, open minded, funny, and wonderful. Don't listen to the bad reviews, you will learn so much if you try in this class
Don't take this class if you're here for GE credits. The textbook is super hard to understand and you have to read it to pass the class. Dr. Abele can come off as a little mean, but he means well. Tests make up most of your grade, so you have to be able to remember what was in the textbook and in lectures.
He is the best profesor ever. You will understand at the end of the semester why he is so strict. The world needs more professor like him. Get ready to read, this is back to old school, back to using your brain.
He's pretty great if you're willing to put in the work. Read the textbook and take notes on everything, and you'll be fine. He let anyone who had an A in our class skip the final. Attendance is super mandatory, but it's worth it.
Doesn't like to teach
Realistically the tests aren't that hard. Read what's assigned to you and half pay attention the lecture and you'll be alright. My issue is he has a huge ego and is “old school” in a bad way. The dude gave me a 0 for participation because I was in the bathroom for “too long”. Hates laptops for notes and insists you print the readings everyday.
Okay so this guy is No-tech, no phones or computers. You read A LOT and it's a HARD read but they are usually an interesting read. He is a really nice guy and try to help you but ultimately I wouldn't take this class unless you are truly interested in the topic. If you are, he will be a great teacher, if not and its just for credit, good luck...
The professor overcomplicates everything and makes it difficult to pass the only positive aspect is us having a break and you will need it to put up with him he focus on Kant and asking questions as if we were Kant it becomes overwhelming I never rated before but had to for him to save others from the trouble I hate his class don't take it
He treats his "Intro" class like an advanced class for ethics. He explained his lectures poorly than, gave out an assignment for the class to get into separate groups and work on it together for a really short amount of time. He's a really hard grader so expect his read pen on ANY work you hand in with no explanation. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS.
The worst professor I've had at DVC. His lectures aren't informative. Every assignment is poorly formatted. His canvas is a mess. One time he docked me points on question and when I watched the review he listed my answer as a correct one. Do not take his classes. It will tank your GPA and give you unnecessary headaches.
It is a tough class and he's a traditional professor (no electronics), however, an A isn't impossible. DO THE OPTIONAL READINGS, he gives advice on them which will help for the exam. I was the only one who did them, so he gave me some extra questions that were similar to what was on the exam. Lets you have a cheat sheet and is helpful during OH
Didn't have a problem with him until the first group assignment. Brought it up < a minute after he piled them up and he graded them as late. Be sure to come on time for exams (five minutes before is on time in this case), you will not hear what he said about it and will lose a lot of points. Do not use your own examples, they will be marked wrong.
If you hate your life take this class.
He completely ruined my philosophy experience. This has been the worst class I've taken so far at DVC. The lectures and notes are extremely heavy. His lecture lack of engagement and passion. I don't recommend taking his class, it can hurt your GPA.
He runs thru heavy content fairly quick. Vocabulary/content from last class is presumed to be understood. No pictures of his slides, but he would always offer to go back to any of the slides after class. This was one of the most difficult classes I have ever taken, but I feel that I have learned the most from this class than any other I have taken
