The most liberal teacher ever! He allows his personal views to decide who will get the higher grade. The most unreasonable man I have ever meet. Take him only if you are ok with agreeing with everything he says. I would not recomend him to anyone.
During the classes we wrote two major papers and one small paper. The main theme of the class was disinformation and lies that occur in media/politics. The class isn't extremely hard but it does require a lot of work. He is always available and willing to help at any time. He really wants his students to succeed. Definitely recommend him!!!
He really knows his stuff. I learned a lot about writing and the theme of disinformation was interesting and I saw how it could really relate to real life. Lots of work, but worth it.
By far one of the worst teacher i have ever come in contact with. Very one sided and yells at his students for not agreeing with him. He teaches students to hate and scolds them for their own personal opinion after asking for it! Grades off of personal bais not how well you write. I leanrned nothing!!
Hes very insightful and really cool. You definitely have to pay attention to the material and there is alot of reading but it is well worth it and he is a great teacher! loved him and would definitely recommend him
requires 7-8 novels read throughout the quarter (length varies), and a one page dbs reflection paper. Class participation is a HIGHLY RECOMMENDED, because he loves those who participates. No test, no quizes. Final was basically a paper of your intellectual opinions over all the readings. I'm a math major and his class got me interested!
Horrible, he lies and indoctrinates his students. Allows his own political views to cloud his grading. He forces you to go along with what he says by masking his reasoning behind baised one sided readings. The worst teacher ever. AVOID HIM AT ALL COSTS!
One of the best professors at Seattle University. He challenges you to examine your beliefs, which some students are scared of and as a result leave bad comments about him. Class participation his required if you want a decent grade. Make sure that you're on top of everything! He's a great teacher overall and opened my eyes to many new topics.
Take this Course -- AMAZING! Great Professor. Required to read many novels (8 novels my time around, but he's thinking 6 or 7 in the future), but all of them are interesting. Class discussions are fun, informative, and he discusses controversial/taboo topics. Only grades are participation, 7 page "Microthemes", Final Paper, and Final Grade.
At first I was scared out of my mind in this class but the farther I went into the course the more I enjoyed the material and his teaching style. Even though I didn't agree with him 100% of the time, he really makes you think outside the box and really expects a lot from you. Lots of work but completely worth it. Take him!
I guess anyone can get a PHD these days. Aguirre is nothing special. Only uninformed people think that he is a good teacher. Its an easy class, not challenge to perform better, just really think. Makes you agree with everything he says, which sometimes get annoying. Agree with wath he says and its an easy A.
Dr. Aguirre is really great! His class was so enlightening and the reading was actually enjoyable. I wouldn't have understood the literature without his help. And it doesn't hurt that he has beautiful blue eyes and looks kind of like Anderson Cooper...!
The books are hard to read and there is a lot of them. You will read about a book a week and some of theme are not very interesting.
There is a lot of reading but just as long as you understand the main idea and themes you should have nothing to worry about. I agree he is very subjective in his ideas but thats not a bad thing. It helps broaden your perspective on different issues. He is an awesome professor. Don't miss class because you WILL miss out on a lot of info!
very intersting and passionate teacher. i enjoyed him very much. he had high expectations but not unreasonable. though i didn't agree with everything he said i felt he offered a healthy discussion environmnet rather than shutting down opposing view points. take this class for eng 120!
I loved Aguirre. I really liked his lectures (though they were sometimes long) and really enjoyed the books he chose and topics we discussed. I thought he was very fair, helpful and understanding. This was my most enjoyable class in college so far! def. take him for english 120, it was great and I learned alot! :) and u get to watch south park!!!!
high expectations, definetly not just an esay A. BUT- by far one of the best prof's i have had here at SU. take it!
Hard but fair.
Professor Aguirre is an amazing professor. He really encourages class discussions, but never fails to chime in with witty and intelligent remarks to keep things interesting. I learned so much through this course and my writing skills were definitely improved. Aguirre extremely helpful in & out of class plus he is a cutie!!
He's one of my favorite professors so far. His class is definitely a challenge, but as long as you're willing to speak your mind and back up what you have to say, you're solid. The two papers aren't too difficult and he gives many opportunities to regain lost points. Very helpful to talk to him during office hours!!!
Tries to continuously shock students and cant face things like his views are extremely outdated and imposing.
Amazing class... Really excited to have him again!
Unfair and unreasonable
He forgets that he is teaching a COLLEGE WRITING class. He tries to turn this class into a political science class when he really should have nothing to do with politics. Very unfair professor. Grades on opinion of essays vs. the quality of their writings. He almost failed me because I didn't agree with him.
Smart man with a lot of opinions. Tries to let students express theirs too though. Only gave 2 papers the whole term which he failed almost everyone on. It was supposed to be a writing class but I didn't learn anything about writing. He was rude when students asked for help and didn't set his expectations until after he failed everyone.
The class has a lot of high density reading. He's a staunch liberal. Since his class is about class wars, you will be learning more about the liberal side of politics...conservatives beware! He's strict on papers, but he is really helpful. If you see him outside of class, he is really nice and does his best to help out.
Even though I am not expecting to get a grade higher than a C I have to say that I really enjoyed this class! Professor Aguirre is tough and expects you to do the work. The reading materials are tough to understand, but he expets you to be confused. Postmodernism is a tough topic. Do not take this class unless you're open to having your perception
Professor Aguirre is one of the toughest most frustrating professors you can have but also challenges you to expand thinking. He is full of himself and kind of annoying at times. But by the end of the class you will love him, have learned a lot, and somehow come out with a better great grade than you expect.
He is probably the best teacher I've ever had. He's opened my mind on topics I've never thought about before. He is also the toughest teacher I've ever had, so you have your work cut out for his class. CAUTION: DO NOT take his 110 class. DO TAKE his 120 class. He hates teaching 110 and it shows, but he's extremely passionate about his 120 class.
TAKE HIM IF YOU CAN! His class is exciting and engaging, yet very challenging. The class is fast paced, you can't afford to be behind on reading. The books are actually interesting to read, which is nice. Class participation is key. He is very passionate about this subject, and will challenge your previous beliefs. Not to mention he's super cute.
One of the only teachers at SU that has gotten me interested in the subject material and really cares about what he teaches. Take his class if you are looking for a challenging but rewarding college experience.
Seminar on Class Warfare: He loves talking about class warfare and this class opened me up to stuff I had never thought about. Mostly discussion, a lot of books to read but not too bad as long as you manage your time, and you write 2 papers. He's tough on grading papers so in order to get a good grade, start working on the paper before hand!
aguirre comes off very aggressive. he will argue with you if you disagree but he does point out very valid things. you definitely see things about society that you usually dont learn in school. there is a lot of reading but for discussion you don't really need to read too much.. he is a hard grader but overall i still recommend taking his class.
he was really fair and accepted what i had to say about everything and you should take him if you want to pass and have a life and have fun as a freshman. pickles
I went into this class not knowing really what to expect and left a new person. I love it. it's a lot of hard work, but it's "fun" hard work. He loves you, if you care about his class (understandable). Very helpful, SO interesting. A lot of hard workd though, but worth it. Don't take it if you're looking for a blow off. I loved him I reccommend him
Although there is a tremendous course load, this class is beyond worth it. Each day is a new adventure that Aguirre takes you on. The books are a bit weird, but you will never think the same way again. IF YOU GET THE CHANCE, TAKE THIS CLASS! He is truly an amazing teacher. Its college, you have to do work eventually, JUST TAKE IT!
Dr. Aguirre is enthusiastic and engaging. My favorite professor thus far. He can be blunt, and is extremely honest and open-minded. English 120 is jam-packed with reading and discussions, but they are great books. Fun class, just stay on top of the work!
Robert Aguirre is affirming and will open your mind. I have hated all english classes in my life, until this one. He gave me a totally new perspective. So so worth the tough work. An especially great class if you have an interest in gender, sexuality, and other "binaries" which are discussed almost every class. TAKE THIS CLASS, DOG.
Aguirre is very passionate and I must admit that I learned a lot from his class and the content was interesting. However, he is extremely arrogant and will attack anyone with a differing opinion than his own. He constantly tried to talk himself up and create a better image of himself. He has strong favorites and contradicts himself daily.
He is a very good teacher and you will be very interested in the class. He is passionate and has an "out-of the-box" teaching style.
Dr. Aguirre is very into what he teaches. I took his seminar on class warfare and if you don't share his views he can be pretty brutal. DO NOT TAKE if you are conservative. He will tear you apart.
Aguirre's class on post-modernity is heavy on mandatory reading, but worth it. Super interesting. Participation is a must. There's a structured reflection paper along with 6 lit analyses that he let's you re-do to get an A. Gives you a more critical perspective on our society. I recommend it if you're looking to work hard and challenge yourself!
Aguirre is an incredible teacher with a clear passion for this class. His enthusiasm for the subject really starts to rub off on you and makes you feel more intelligent but this is NOT an easy class. He is a hard grader and doesn't believe in BS A's. He's always more than willing to help you improve your writing skills IF you see him outside class.
Dr. Aguirre is intimidating, frustrating, and very ego-centric. It was basically a class bashing America. He is a hard essay grader. He literally told me my paper was an A- in his mind, but still gave me a C on it. Good luck in this class.
The hardest professor I've ever had, but one of the best. His class forced me to comfort my fear of public speaking and learned how to create creative comments. I worked my butt off and I got an A. If you want to be challenged and have a professor we truly cares about your success then take him. He is such a sweet guy and will help you if you try.
This class was puer challenging, and he uses the sink or swim method of teaching. When you first start writing you feel like you have no idea what you're doing, but, somehow, by the end of the class your writing improves ALOT. It is a really hard class, but if you put the work in, it is equally rewarding. Best class I've taken so far.
Dr. Aguirre is an extremely tough grader. I would only receive a C+/B- on my papers in his class, but in my other UCOR classes I would get an A+ on papers. What I liked about Dr. Aguirre is that he really works well with you (in his office or through email) when revising your paper.
Had this professor a long time ago, I'm a Chemistry professor now. Needed to rate him because I think about how much he taught me in just one course. Truly exceptional. Should be considered very lucky to ever have him.
Really interesting guy and a really fun teacher. He also, in my opinion, out dresses every other professor on campus.
He's definitely challenging but he's great during office hours. Take his class if you like a challenge.
Great Professor. You must work to get your grade and attend class regularly. 3 papers, reading due everyday. Your writing will improve by the end of the quarter. If youre willing to work and you want to actually learn, take this class.
Dr. Aguirre knows how to help students with their writing. He's an excellent teacher who knows how to communicate and provides great feedback on your writing. However, he is a tough grader and expects a lot of participation during discussions. All in all, his class was great to be in and you won't regret it.
I thought I would get a C in his class. He says that most students get a C but I got an A! I think he tries to scare you a little bit but do your work, read the books and partcipate and you'll be fine.
This class was by far one of my most difficult classes. You really have to work to get a good grade, but he is very open and willing to help. You have to go to him to get the help, but it is honestly worth it and your writing will improve immensely.
He is a great professor. Tough but worth the work. I learned a lot.
This class truly opened my eyes to the inequality of class in america. He's a tough grader, and only assigns two major papers (no tests). If you put in the effort, use office hours, and participate in discussions, you'll do great. You won't look at politics and corporations the same way again! The papers are stressful, but beneficial!
Dr. Aguirre is one of the best professors, because he is very interested in what he teaches and he teaches very valuable information that had a huge impact on me. Although this is a UCOR class he treats it as something more and expects a lot from his students, but only because he wants to ensure that you come out of this class with more knowledge.
A ton of reading and writing. Aguirre has very strong opinions and likes to voice them. He also likes being the smartest in the room, but does actually care about his students. He's a lot nicer and more approachable outside of class.
So. Much. Reading.
Very harsh grader. Will point out every little detail he BELIEVES is wrong or unclear. Reads/grades papers as if he has no basic understanding of anything
Dr. Aguirre knows what he's doing. It might seem like hell during his class but what he teaches you will stick with you for a long time. ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS GO TO OFFICE HOURS! He will help you every step of the way during his class if you just reach out to him. Ask him questions and get feedback on your writing early on.
Dr. Aguirre is a tough teacher, do not take his class if you are not prepared to read and write so much. That said he's an amazing professor and knows what he is talking about. He puts out clear standards for what he expects and ALWAYS tries to be open for office hours or emails to help you with writing. The things he teaches will stick with you.
Im an international student and despite I like his teaching, I must say he has a lot of high expectations. It is sad he cannot be honest with the international student and let him/her know if the student actually has a chance to pass or if the student needs a lower class to pass... He will let you fall, so when he says "trust me" just dont.
He's a time. Vocal about his political pref, but is willing to listen. Once you meet outside of class with him or send him an email for your thesis, your chances of passing gets way better. I learned after the midterm paper to at least send him a thesis email. Helps a lot and even with the C from the midterm paper, I still did well in his class??
Participation is part of the grade, but he doesn't force you to talk if you're more quiet! A couple conferences outside of class that are required, and often available through email which I found most helpful. Doesn't used Canvas which is frustrating when you don't know your grade. Truly believe I am a much better writer after this course.
Tough grader. I remember our first paper with Pr. Aguirre, the highest grade was C and his criteria to pass is C+
Dr. Aguirre is what i would call a passionate professor. For having such an early class, he always had a plan and discussed the material with a lot of enthusiasm. You do have to work hard, and there is a lot of reading and writing, but his feedback is helpful. If you put in the work and follow the guidelines, you'll enjoy the class and a good grade
very high expectations but doesn't get specific on what expectations are, gives a little too much freedom in writing papers, doesn't do well with technology
hardest teacher. such a tough grader- no one got above a C+ on the first paper. impossible to do well unless you go in and meet with him constantly so he ends up writing your papers for you. Asked us to evaluate him and then took our evaluations, read them out-loud to the class and said your opinions of me are wrong.
I agree with "very high standards but doesn't ever explain what his standards are." This class is a complete shot in the dark, you never know what you're doing. Lots of reading, pretty much one novel every week. Not a ton of writing, just small one page papers. Lectures are the entire class. Not very engaging class.
There is a lot of reading that is sometimes confusing, but the discussions and lectures clear up the class concepts. There are short one page papers, but they need to be your best writing to get a good grade. Office hours are a must and he helps you incorporate the necessary elements to get an A, but you need to put in effort too. TAKE NOTES!!!
UCOR 1400. There is a lot of fun reading in the course, but it was a very enjoyable class because the professor is very passionate about the topics. Class comprised of lectures and group discussions of the readings. My perspective of the world has changed from taking these classes. I am more versed in yuppies, feminism, and many other viewpoints.
By far the best professor I've ever had. Gives good feedback and is very passionate about the subject. You really LEARN A LOT. Be prepared to work really hard and read a lot. Be vocal in the classroom during discussions- participation is what saves you and matters more than the first essay. Don't be late and don't miss class and you'll be fine.
One of the best classes/professors I've ever taken/had. super engaging & entertaining teacher. a little crazy, but in the best&most dedicated way. Tough grader, but plenty of chances to revise, the final he grades easier. amazing course that taught me to question many things&grow in many ways. Im sure any course by him is just as rewarding&great.
I would definitely take Dr. Aguirres postmodernism class again! If you make an effort, youll finish the class being able to easily read a 300-page book in a week, know how to write on a college level, and have an amazing new outlook on life. Dr. Aguirre cares that you succeed and hell help you as much as possible, but be ready to work hard.
Some people love this guy but I never got it. He's one of those teachers who thinks that there is a correct interpretation to each book and deducts points if our interpretation doesn't match his. There are some interesting ideas bounced around in class but he's also an insanely hard grader.
He expects this class to be your number one priority. Has huge expectations and is an extremely harsh grader. For our class he made us buy a bunch of books that we read like five pages of and never looked at again.
People that write bad reviews on this guy are far from the truth. Every conversation I have had with Professor Aguirre has been genuine and thoughtful. At the end of the day all he really wants is for his students to succeed and become a better writer. His tough grading style is actually what pushed me to become a better writer and person.
As an international student, I took professor Aguirre's class to complete the required UCOR's. However, the things I learned to improve my writing skills were very beneficial. I highly recommend taking his class to those who want to write high-grade essays during their undergraduate careers. He is also always available on his email to provide help.
I LOVE AGUIRRE!!!! Anyone and everyone should take his Postmodern class because it changed my life. Easily the best, funniest, the most thought-provoking professor I have had. He is not easy and you have to work for your grade, but if you participate and show interest, he will reciprocate. It's funny to watch him go on some political tangents, too!
Professor Aguirre has been one of my favorite professors and his Dystopian Literature class was easily one of the best courses Ive taken at SU. Hes tough but accommodating and has clear expectations, giving plenty of time to complete work. The class was engaging, insight-provoking, and genuinely fascinating! Its changed my outlook on the world
Really down to earth person, hes a person rather than the generic robot teacher
Today, when no one spoke up, he started raising his voice, cursing at us, threatening to leave the class, then throwing chalk on the table. He assigned 200 pages of reading that day so most people didn't do it. The sad part is his class is genuinely interesting, hes just an unstable professor who is prone to hysteric fits like this. Disappointing.
Professor Aguirre is definitely a tough professor, and his class has been the most difficult for me by far. However, if you are willing to devote the time to complete his work, he will make sure you get the grade you deserve. While his assignments are time consuming and may be frustrating, you learn so much and gain better writing skills.
Professor Aguirre is awesome. He is effective in reaching his students and engages with them well. He cares about everyone's learning and overall well being. His UCOR class will push you hard, but professor Aguirre won't let you fall if you feel you're falling behind. People leaving poor reviews clearly did not understand or engage with his course.
Prof Aguirre is the professor to take if you want to actually learn something in college. He is very organized, funny and his lectures are very thought-provoking. Also gives fair rewards to those who work for it. He is always ready to help as long as you ask, and you will get good grades if you are willing to put in genuine work.
Dr. Aguirre very clearly cares about his students and his teaching. He prepares great, thought-provoking lectures for his students and genuinely enjoys engaging with everyone. Do not take his class if you are not willing to put in the work, as he has high expectations. However, he is also very willing to help you and wants to see you succeed!
Professor Aguirre is by far one of the best professors I've had at Seattle U. He brings such interesting insights in and outside of the classroom. At times, his class can definitely feel rigorous (particularly with reading), but it's easy to manage if you just do what's asked. He cares about his students and has a lot of knowledge + advice to share
Don't take unless your ready to dedicate your whole life to this
One of the best professors you could ever have for an English course. This class influenced my worldview so so much. The readings were weird at first but after you've understood it's super interesting! Also, he'll raise your grade by a 1/3 if you didn't miss more than 2 classes so I guess that's an exchange for his being a tough grader.
Here is a crazy story. One day, he made us do teacher reviews in the halfway through the course, than the next day read out all of them to the class and bashed the ones that gave him low scores. Honestly ridiculous behavior, I wish I was lying. This combined a workload heavier than my other two courses combined (for a UCOR!), I suggest avoiding.
One of my favorite UCOR classes here at Seattle U. Keeping up with the readings is important as well as rewarding when coming into class. The books assigned were interesting to read and Professor Aguirre showed great enthusiasm during lectures. I would highly recommend this course :)
This was an amazing UCOR class, Prof Aguirre did an exceedingly awesome job at teaching the class. Yes, there is a lot of reading, but if you find the content fascinating, the coursework comes somewhat easily. The topics covered are difficult but it helped better my understanding of the world by a ton. I cannot recommend this class enough!! :)
Probably one of the best professors at the university. There is a lot of reading but the challenge in his class comes in the form of his concepts which open you mind and honestly made me have a new view on books and language and the world. Had him in my freshman year and it sucks that I need to wait a couple more years to take his class again.
I'm convinced Dr. Aguirre reported my last review and many others because there is no way he has this many five stars. In an attempt to not be removed again, all I'll say is DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASSES. If you do, you'll understand the one-star reviews and wonder why there aren't more of them
Took Professor Aguirre a while back and one of my lasting impressions of Seattle University will be his self-righteous speeches that he would make to the class. Every class felt more like a platform for him to display his "intelligence" in front of an audience rather than an opportunity to learn.
One of the heaviest course loads I've ever had and also one of the best classes I've taken. He's tough and passionate, but understanding nonetheless. Highly recommend!
This professor is reporting comments that are exposing the truth about him because he can't take it. Avoid any of his classes trust me.
treated class like a platform to politically rant
He's a difficult teacher, and not in a good way. As his comments below show, he can't take constructive criticism. He has this weird notion that he's always right and no one else's word matters. He fails to understand that people have other classes as well. He's backhanded, and the school needs to talk to him. Steer clear from this class.
Rude and doesn't give clear grading criteria. It feels like he grades based off of how much he likes you.
High expectations. He holds you to his standard of performance. If you are an organized, Type A student, you will probably succeed. Otherwise, stay clear of this class.
Not the fairest grader, unrealistic expectations, not afraid to embarrass students in class over small things. If you are prepared to take on interesting coursework with a difficult professor, go for it.
Overall Professor Aguirre's class was okay. Made us buy a lot of books only to read a couple of chapters from each of them. Grading was tough and honestly not fair since we were given short time to revise our papers between 3rd draft and final partner paper. Responds quickly and is kind, but be aware that you need to work hard for a good grade.
The librarians that came into our class to teach for ONE DAY taught us more about effective research and writing than he ever did.
Professor Aguirre is challenging but worth it. His class will push you, but he's there to support your learning. I found apps like unstuckstudy helpful for studying his concepts. Take it if you're ready to work hard.
I liked him when I first started my class, but he handled his class extremely unfairly. For his essays, he grades very harsh without defining what he wants and did not follow the rubric he gave us. He seems to think that his students receiving C's and D's is normal, rather than a product of his own inadequacy and insane grading expectations. Avoid!
If you have parental figure issues, prepare to be triggered each and every class because if you so much as show up 2 minutes late he'll belittle you and basically berate you in front of everyone lol. He said he would work with students to agree on a grade for essays, but he just gives you a grade and tells you you're wrong if you don't agree. Run!
Super interesting class but tough teacher. Super tough grader. A good chunk of the roster dropped the class before the end of the quarter. Never dared being even 2 minutes late. Super tough teacher, probally wouldnt take again but was super interesting + lend me textbooks when i expressed financial hardship, so not completely evil...
Very passionate which I loved, but tough grader & criteria isn't always clear but if you ask questions he will always help. If you actively participate & show that you care & are trying your best, he'll be far more understanding if you need extensions or guidance. VERY heavy workload (reading, projects second 1/2 of quarter) but he'll work with you
The workload at times was very overwhelming but the material was super interesting. Not a fan of having a final exam + final project, wish it was just the project. He really cares about students success and the more you communicate with him, the more understanding he will be if you need any sort of help. Overall loved his class & him as a prof
I took the course "Dystopian Literature" in FQ24, and it remains one of the most interesting courses I have taken. While there is a lot of reading to complete, the discussions in class are worthwhile, and the insights I have gained from the class have been long-lasting.
Aguirre is fairly pleasant to talk to but his inflexibility and policies are extremely frustrating. Course policies were unreasonably demanding despite being a UCOR. I had to buy 6 books when i could've just used a pdf or one from the library, but he didn't allow it. VERY nit-picky with formatting as well. And grading is harsh.
He's a nice guy, but like others have said the grading and class materials can be a pain. Will mark you down for not having the physical novel (course requires you to buy 6, which feels like a lot.) If you go to him for help or ask a question in advance he's nice enough and helpful. Honestly just a tedious and excessive class for a UCOR.
Dr. Aguirre is an excellent professor. The reviews are mixed because you will either love or dislike his teaching style. From what I've learned about him if you communicate with him if you're overwhelmed he will help you. A lot of reading but it's all books people should read and he brings to light a lot of issues we as a society often ignore.
He seems nice at first, but if you struggle with mental health or making it to class, he is unforgiving, inflexible, and condescending. Reviews are very mixed because it depends on which side of him you get. Please just take another professor, unless you think you can adhere to his expectations and don't mind his self-righteousness. Tough grader.
There is a lot of reading and physical copies of the books are required but it's a really educating class and even though i definitely was challenged I really enjoyed it and his teaching style. He's very passionate about the topic and is helpful to any questions asked ahead of the deadline.
