Good teacher, fun class. Bad reviews are waaay biased, this site is ridiculous. Those who turn to this site to vent or try to ruin a professor should really say this libel to his face. Besides, most of you look like morons due to your inability to correctly form and punctuate an English sentence.
I dropped after 3 classes, he started the class on chapter 5 of the book then skipped to chapter 7, explains the basics then gives you homework that goes into more advanced work that he never explained and don't ask him a question, he will tell you "Don't worry about that, it is not important", but in my brain, it is important. He is weird.
Really liked, helpful teacher. Class material made fun.
like teacher, class is alright. some students are ignorant making class boring at times. teacher is good though
easy A as long as you have some grasp of common sense
not too hard as long as you pay some attention
satisfied with my grade, good teacher, I recommend class
This is a tough one. In philosophy, you are(at his level) tethered to specific ideas that you yourself find useful, and always find faults in any other sides of arguments or discussions. For him, he can't accept anything other than what he perceives as important. I even told this to his face. class/ coursework - easy. teacher - hard to bear.
HORRIBLE. He picks on certain students just for fun and embarasses them in front of the whole class. Is very unorganized and leaves the room a lot. He doesn't care what you think. He only cares about himself. I dropped this class because I couldn't handle it any more. He went over the same things over and over again and just got into arguments.
See, here's the thing; he's a "good" teacher when it comes to communicating the facts, but he has very little patients and can make you feel like and idiot in front of everyone if you don't do things right. He almost ran a kid out of class (twice), and then spent the rest of the course not teaching us. Easy class, but he can get on your nerves.
He is the driest, most boring, conservative man ever. His decisions on what to teach exasperate me, and he just says the same thing over and over again. Along with assigning 90 minute quizzes with 30 questions on them, 10 multi choice, 10 true or false, and 10 short answer. It is a complete and total waste of my time.
In my opinion, excellent professor. The material is not easy but he will sit there for weeks and try to help you understand. He hates people who are distracting. Basically if you show up to class and make an effort and not disturb anybody you should not have a hard time getting a good grade in this class.
Philosophy is demanding no matter the instructor, but Mr. Allen has great command of the material and knows how to present it in clear and concise manner. Just be sure to pay attention in class and do your homework.
A wonderful intellectual experience. Instructor demonstrated great passion for his subject as well as tremendous learning. Goes over things until he gets them right!
Really enjoyed his class and would take others from him.
Thoroughly enjoyed philosophy and Mr. Allen's teaching style. He goes over the details of an argument until it is clear and then does the same thing for various rebuttals.
Take his course if you really want to learn Philosophy. He's a fair grader, but does require students to work hard.
I ended up really liking this course and the prof.
Mr. Allen makes you think and before you know it you have become philosophical yourself.
What I liked about Mr. Allen was the way he organized and summarized his lectures. He also carefully reviewed with us before each exam.
I knew nothing about logic before taking Mr. Allen's course; now I know how to evaluate my reasoning and others' thanks to his instruction.
I wish that all my professors were as knowledgeable and dedicated as Mr. Allen
Mr. Allen is a very good lecturer; his real life examples make philosophy easy to relate to. If you pay attention to him and follow directions you will do well in the course.
Teacher wasn't bad, students were. He'd have to explain concepts like Modus Ponens (a very basic principle) multiple times to a single student. Good examples. If you take his class just listen, it's easy enough. I passed pretty easily. Just hope you're in with students who are actually qualified to be called "students".
Good professor, knows material, helps students (the serious ones). Many students in his course are ignorant and purposely try to play with his temper. The idiots didn't end up at community college for nothing (I am a high school student currently double enrolled at Schoolcraft for some early college credits and found this class easier than my actua
Good professor, knows material, helps students. Many students in his course are ignorant and purposely try to play with his temper. The idiots didn't end up at community college for nothing (I am a high school student double enrolled at Schoolcraft for some early college credits and found this class easier than my actual high school classes).
I had Prof. Allen for PHIL 243 and PHIL 247. The simplest way to describe his teaching is "you get out what you put in." If you expect him to hold your hand along the way, you will be disappointed. You need to do some work for yourself, but if you're not lazy, you will do very well in his class. He always stays after and helps anyone who asks.
I really enjoyed Mr. Allen's teaching and would recommend him to other Schoolcraft students.
Mr. Allen teaches a GREAT course in logic. You come away knowing- but only if you are hard-working- the essentials of modern logic: how to symbolize and prove arguments valid or invalid.
Prof Allen is a decent teacher. You have to pay attention and do work on your own or you will not do well. But he tends to be an A-hole and seems to get really ticked when people ask questions, which he usually just repeats what he as already said as a response. He does not stick to his syllabus and will openly mock students for doing bad in class.
Yes, Mr. Allen is good teacher; but I wouldn't say that he "mocks" diffident students. Rather, he lets them know in no uncertain terms that their inattentiveness is detrimental to doing well in his course.
I really enjoyed his lectures: thought provoking and humorous.
He doesn't give good examples when trying to explain a concept in his lectures. He also gets confusing because he will tell students they are wrong but then will explain how they are right
Excellent lectures and very helpful when it comes to writing your term paper. Could it be that Mr. Allen has found some truth in what a student has said and tried to emphasize that instead of the mistaken elements?
I am pleased with Dr. Allen's tests, lectures, and grading policy. Aside from that, he is helpful and comes across as knowledgeable re. philosophy. Funny too
Great course! Now I know how to reason. Mr. Allen made the material accessible and exciting.
I enjoyed his lectures and the way he engaged us in discussions. Prepares students well for the exams too.
at first I was kinda scared not knowing what to expect. The class itself was like you almost had to be high in to really understand it. Mr. allen was a cool dude tho, deff helped me understand things and look at things very differently, that i prob. would never have done so before and if a teacher can do that for you then i think hes done his job
Does a good job helping students develop their ideas. Covers all sides of an issue.
Terrible. He is thoroughly convinced that he is better than everyone else, and he would rather spend an hour and a half complaining about how stupid we are rather than actually teach anything. Whenever someone asks a question, he gives them the "Are you F***ing dumb?" look. Very condescending and useless as a teacher. I would not recommend him.
I must say that I thoroughly enjoyed working with Dr. Allen. He facilitated my understanding of a difficult but important subject. He was always well prepared for class and gave us interesting and at times amusing lectures. Take his course if you are up for a great academic experience.
I would label myself a satisfied customer upon completing Prof. Allen's course. He presented the material on ancient and modern philosophy in a way that we could understand and respond to. He also seems to genuinely enjoy exchanging ideas with students.
Dr. Allen has been the worse professor I've ever had.He had a fight with a student during class, wouldn't answer questions during class and was very rude. I never missed a session and was very attentive but couldn't understand Philosophy or comprehend from him.He graded students according to whom he liked to ask questions to during class.
This teacher is an embarrassment to the Schoolcraft College community and is an example of the low quality of education received here. He was not a respectable or respectful teacher, he openly mocked students for not knowing answers, and made unnecessary comments about students to their peers. He is a sorry excuse for a teacher.
This teacher was terrible. I handed in a paper two days late and two weeks later when I asked him how I could see the grade he said he didn't have it also I had asked for help and asked questions about the paper and he would only respond with the date the paper was due, he's no help, he's boring, has sloppy writing, and gives odd looks, bad prof.
Bad bad bad bad
This teacher has a very harsh personality. If you don't like being told you're wrong, don't take the class. But let's be honest here, he's around to teach you, and he does a good job. Students think that because it's a philosophy class, they can philosophize against the teacher. Well, I mean, you can try. But it's very disruptive and annoying.
I took his class at wayne county community college. He is not a good professor at all. the homework he assigned we had to post on blackboard he never graded it at all. So , please be aware if your taking his course you really don't know what to expect as far as your grade. Our mid term was only (8) questions. the Final was open book ...
I loved this class. This professor was awesome. He is so nice and funny. He gets off topic sometimes, but it only adds to his lectures. Even if I didn't read, I made a B on the exams, but you need to study. Great class.
He made students feel silly for getting incorrect answers. He changed our final last minute after many students had started a portion of it. He went over class time several times, disregarding our other commitments and classes. He lectured the entire class. He used a lot of difficult language when we would ask what he meant, he would just repeat
